Allen Tucker Ferguson Allen Tucker Ferguson, 79, of Old Gristmill Road, Appomattox, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Ruby Booth Ferguson. Born in Appomattox County on May 5, 1931, he was a son of the late Wade Hampton and Tressie Martin Ferguson. Tucker was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, the American Legion Post # 104, and the Appomattox Moose Lodge. He served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War and was a retired sausage maker for Diner Bell Meat Products. Tucker is survived by six nieces, Pat Trimyer, Christine Cyrus, Sharon Lepore, Judy Branham, Gail Pry, and Jane Merrick, a nephew, Jimmie Metts, a sister-in-law, Marvis Ferguson, and a caretaker, Mary Elliott. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Nov. 7, 2010, at New Hope Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ronnie Rodgers officiating. Nov 7, 2010 ROCKY MOUNT — Belvie Hall Furrow, 63, of Rocky Mount, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010. She was born in Patrick County on June 6, 1947, to James Albert Hall and Gracie Alma Wright Hall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Delbert Hall. She was employed by Franklin County Public Schools as a school bus driver for 24 years and as custodian at Ferrum Elementary School for 14 years. She was a longtime member of Furnace Creek Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Percy Kyrus Furrow; one son, Michael Shannon Furrow; two daughters, Wanda Gail Shively and Marcella Renee Ledbetter; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Harrison Hall; three sisters, Sadie Crum, Mary Gillispie and Linda Philpott; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Brady William Jarrells BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. Brady William Jarrells age 83, went to be with the Lord in his home Friday, Nov. 5 2010. Mr. Jarrells was the son of the late Samuel Jarrells and Lettie Trail. He was born in Hiwasse, Va., and spent most of his life in the Bristol/ Kingsport area. Mr. Jarrells retired from the United States Army after 37½years of service and retired from Eastman and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. Brady was a member and past master of Holston Masonic Lodge No. 559. He served as Tyler of the Grand Lodge of Tennessee in 1994 and attended all the district meetings that year. He was a member of the Kingsport York Rite Bodies and the Knoxville Scottish Rite Bodies having made the rank of 33RD Degree. He was a member of Jericho Shire Temple and Hillbilly Unit, the Charles Newton Bush Past Masters Association and Sullivan Co. Scottish Rite Club. Mr. Jarrells is preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy, wife. Ruth; and grandson, Josh Dingus. Edward Royall Sheffield passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Friday, November 5, 2010., Ed was born November 17, 1922, in Crewe, Virginia. He was a graduate of Crewe High School and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University., Ed went to work for the Bank of Crewe in 1946, beginning a banking career that spanned 40 years. He became the Executive Officer of the Bank of Crewe and served in that position until it was acquired by Virginia National Bank, now Bank of America, around 1966. Ed remained with Bank of America until retiring in 1985, serving the last 15 years as Regional Executive Officer for the Southwest Region of Virginia., Ed served as deacon, elder, trustee and church school teacher at Presbyterian churches in Crewe, Charlottesville and Abington, Virginia. He was also active in the Chamber of Commerce in Crewe and in Abingdon. He was an avid photographer, and leaves for his family a treasured photographic collection dating back over 50 years., Ed was predeceased by his parents, Frank W. and Eula H. Elmer M. McNutt KINGSPORT, Tenn. Elmer M. McNutt, 86, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at The Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home, Tenn. Born in Gate City, Va., he was the son of the late William A. and Annie Lovie Epperson McNutt. Mr. McNutt was a member of the First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Kingsport. He proudly served his country in the U.S., during, and won two, and a Presidential Unit Citation. Elmer was also a member of, Post No. 4933, Federal Order of Eagles, and The Valley Benhams, Va., Shriners Club. He was a prominent homebuilder and built homes in Patton Heights, Hiara Heights, Colonial Heights, Larkspur, and in many other local communities. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Audaleen McNutt; brother, Keith McNutt. Elmer is survived by his daughters, Nadine McNutt, Kingsport, Cindy Lynne McNutt-Kaestner and husband Richard, Philomath, Oregon; son, Gary McNutt and wife Madeline, Miami, Fla., in Kingsport; sister, Edna Hoover; brother, Arthur McNutt and wife Thelma; sister-in-law, Jewel Garren; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, at 12:30 p.m. in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Chapel. Sykes, At Princeton he became a Bicentennial Preceptor and published his first two books, Crime and Society and the Society of Captives, which is still a classic in criminology and is the most cited book in the field, having gone through several editions, the most recent in 2007. In 1958-59 he took a sabbatical year in Mexico and studied art at the Instituto de Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, In 1959 he joined the sociology faculty at Northwestern University and subsequently taught at Dartmouth College, where he chaired the department. In 1963 he became the first Executive Officer of the American Sociological Association in Washington, D.C., In 1965, Grex returned to teaching and research and became the director of the Administration of Justice Program at the University of Denver, where he remained until 1972, continuing to publish in his field and also serving on review boards for the National Institutes of Health, and editorial boards of professional journals., Among his major publications are Social Problems, The Future of Crime, and a textbook, Criminology, as well as articles in professional and popular journals and the Encyclopedia Britannica. Grex joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1973 as professor of sociology, serving as chairman of the department for several years. He retired as professor emeritus in 1987., Throughout his academic career, Grex continued to study art and to paint. In Charlottesville he was a renting member of the McGuffey Art Association until 2003, when he moved his studio to his home and became an associate member. His work has been shown locally and in galleries in New Hampshire; Denver, CO; Washington D.C. and Richmond, VA. His last one-man show, a retrospective of his paintings from the 1980s until 2009, was held in the gallery at Woodbery Forest School during September and October of 2010. His work can be found in private collections throughout the world. She was born in Henry County on July 10, 1927, to George and Lucy Hairston Wells. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John Henry Wells and Pelix Wells. He was born on July 24, 1925, in New York City, the son of the late Harry W. Boykin and Mamie Solomon Boykin. He was also preceded in death by his only brother, Harry Daniel Boykin., Mr. Boykin received his education in the public schools of New York and Virginia. His love of music, through singing, touched the lives and warmed the hearts of many people in the community and surrounding areas. Horace was a quiet mannered, family loving, humble spirit gentleman who loved the Lord. He was not perfect, but he certainly knew the prefect One., He was a faithful and dedicated member of the Mount Zion First African Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and chairman of the Official Board, a member of the Sanctuary Choir, and he was the church Boy Scout Leader. He was also a member of Jefferson Lodge #20 F & A Masons, and he participated in many other community wide activities., Mr. Boykin was a decorated Purple Heart Marine who served in World War II. He retired from the United States Postal Service, as a letter carrier, for more than 20 years., He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of over 60 years, Maude J. Boykin; four children, Joyce B. Carey and her husband, Raymond, Horace S. Boykin Jr. "Tuckie" and his wife, Olivia, of Charlottesville, Frank L. She was born in Callands on April 26, 1932, to Walter Bell Merricks and Mabel Elizabeth Wells Merricks. She retired in October as a school bus driver for the Bedford County School system. After the war, he came to Northern Virginia where he met and married Sarah Elizabeth Bailey. They were married nearly 50 years when Sarah died in 1997. EUBANK, Louise Ozment, 93, a beloved mother and the widow of Thomas Harwood Eubank, took her Heavenly homegoing and joined the waiting loved ones on Friday, November 5, 2010 at the Tidelands Community Hospice House. Mrs. Eubank was the daughter of Joseph Eugene Ozment and Annie Overton Matlow Ozment, born on April 24, 1917, in Richmond, Va. She was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, Richmond, Va., and completed numerous educational programs supporting her job with the State of Virginia. In 1980, she retired as administrative secretary from the Department of Welfare and Statistics of the State of Virginia. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Richmond for many years and in 1985, she relocated to Surfside Beach, S.C., joining membership with the Garden City Baptist Church. Louise and Tommy were married on August 31, 1940, and celebrated 34 years together. From their blessed union survive two sons, Thomas "Tom" H. (Dixie) Eubank Jr. and Robert Eugene Eubank; two grandchildren, Thomas "T" H. (Martha) Eubank III and Brooke Elizabeth (Dan) Anderson; and five great-grandchildren, Thomas, Louise, Mitchell Grace, William, and Hill. "A Tribute to Our Mom" will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at the St. Giles First Presbyterian Church. Nancy C. King, Nancy C. King died on Sunday, October 31, 2010, at her home in Ivy, Virginia. The cause was complications arising from cancer. She was 59 years old., Nancy was born in Bronxville, New York. She grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and Montclair, New Jersey. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in journalism and worked as a reporter for radio stations in Little Rock, Arkansas, Washington, D.C., and Charlottesville, Virginia. In the Nineties, Nancy hosted the radio program, Charlottesville Live. She later worked with the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities to produce radio programs for National Public Radio. Nancy's perennial love of radio began in Baltimore, where she listened to Orioles games while finishing homework in her bedroom., In her thirties, Nancy developed a passion for birdwatching. She published newsletters for birding groups in Little Rock and Charlottesville. Her appreciation of birds eventually encompassed the natural world and later blossomed into avid gardening. Nancy also enjoyed travel. She organized and participated in trips to spot birds, tour gardens and just observe the wonderfulness of nature., In addition to her husband, Michael McGowan, Nancy is survived by two children, Nicholas and Grace McGowan; and three brothers, William, John and James King., The family expresses its sincerest gratitude to the community for the innumerable blessings delivered in your kind words, prayers and deeds., In lieu of flowers, Nancy's fond wish is for friends to honor her by dedicating time, momentary or prolonged, to admire nature's plants and animals, even its bugs. Anderson; son, James Anderson and his wife, Booker; one granddaughter, Kindell Ann; one brother, Frank Anderson of Texas; one sister, Earldeane Bergeron of Connecticut; several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends. Andy spent a lifetime helping others and volunteering. He retired from the Department of Corrections in 1990. CRUMP, Robert C., CLU, 81, of Richmond, passed away November 5, 2010. He was retired after 33 years of service with Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada. He was preceded in death by his two sons, Rob and Kenny. He is survived by his "bride" of 60 years, Marilyn Shirey Crump; two daughters, Cathy Brandell and her husband, Jack, of Alburtis, Pa., and Linda Bassett and her husband, Forrest, of Williamsburg, Va.; brother, Walker Crump Jr. of Columbia, S.C.; two grandchildren, Lacy Kuller and Forrest Robert Bassett; nieces and nephews; and also his faithful and loving doxies, Schnitzel and Itzy; and his "guardian angel," Gay Rudis. Mr. Crump was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War earning the Combat Infantry Badge. He was a Virginia Blood Service Volunteer, a Henrico County Motorist Assistant and a longtime member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Robert Joe Niles Jones Jr. departed this life on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010., "Bob" Jones was born March 24, 1942, to Robert Joe Niles Jones Sr. and Elverta Jones in Beggs, Okla. In 1978, he moved with his family from Mesa, Ariz., to Richmond, Va., to pursue graduate studies in divinity at Virginia Union University where he would later serve as an instructor in the Evans-Smith Leadership Training Institute. He would go on to earn a Doctorate of Ministry as a member of the first class of Samuel DeWitt Proctor Fellows at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio., A loving and devoted husband and father, his close friends considered him a "pastor of pastors" and a gifted preacher and teacher. The Rev. Jones recently retired from nearly 35 years of pastoral service at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in DeWitt, Va., where he served for 28 years; Oak Grove Baptist Church in Emporia, Va.; and North Center Street Baptist Church in Mesa Arizona. He was recognized locally and nationally as a champion of spiritual education and development and racial justice. During his distinguished career, he served as president of the Virginia Baptist State Convention, Inc., United Churches of Dinwiddie County, the Dinwiddie Clergy Association and the Richmond Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and as moderator of the Bethany Baptist Association. He also held leadership positions in the World Council of Churches and the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. among other organizations. He was a Board Member and tireless supporter of the Virginia Baptist Children's Home and Family Services in Petersburg, Virginia. After a long battle with cancer, Robert Maclyn Zimmerman passed away peacefully at home on Friday, November 5, 2010., Robert was born in Wright County, Iowa, on his family's farm on March 25, 1932, the second son of John Conrad Zimmerman and Marie Elizabeth Hefti Zimmerman, and grew up on the farm. His only sibling, his older brother Earl, predeceased him. He was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Kary, of Denver, Colorado, in 1998., Bob received his Bachelors degree from the University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa, where he played football and wrestled, then married and began to raise his family. He taught high school math and coached several sports, specializing in wrestling at Hanover, Illinois, East Moline, Illinois. That was followed by a long stint at Oak Park and River Forest High School in Oak Park, Illinois, as a math teacher and head wrestling coach and coach of several other sports including golf and baseball. He earned his Masters degree and continued his studies at the University of Colorado during several summers, and one summer at the University of California at Berkeley, and had the honor of being a Fulbright Exchange teacher in London for one academic year. Bob built his retirement house himself outside Spring Green, Wisconsin, on 60 acres of hills and farmland. He and his beloved wife, Suzanne, spent several years in Wisconsin, and also bought a house in Charlottesville, Virginia, to care for Suzanne's aging parents, Donald and Jeanette Heyne. Suzanne passed away September 24, 2009., Bob leaves his beloved children, Kim Skogsberg and her husband, Donald, of Carol Stream, Illinois, and John Zimmerman and his wife, Mariann, of Crystal Lake, Illinois; and four beautiful granddaughters, Kristin Skogsberg, Kelsey Skogsberg, Jennifer Zimmerman and Janine Zimmerman. He leaves his stepchildren, David Hill and his wife, Janet, of Denver, Colorado, and Sarah Clark and her husband, Daniel, of LaGrange Park, Illinois; and four step-grandchildren, Elizabeth Clark, Robert Clark, Brendan Hill and Katherine Hill. Bob leaves his nephews, Randy Zimmerman and his wife, Cheri, of Humboldt, Iowa, and Rick Zimmerman of Renwick, Iowa., Bob enjoyed building, adding on, fixing and maintaining his homes, as well as being an avid golfer. He was a member of Greene Hills Golf Club in Stanardsville, Virginia, and prior was a member of Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, Virginia, along with Suzanne., Bob's family wishes to express their deepest admiration and thanks to Dr. Gordon Morris and Dr. Timothy Short for their loving care for many years. Nov 7, 2010 Ruth Beale Haynes, 84, formerly of Ridgeway, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at Blue Ridge Rehab Center of Martinsville. She was born in Rockingham County on May 23, 1926, to Robert Beal and Eula Austin Beal. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, William Haynes; a grandchild, Philip E. Haynes Jr.; and two sisters, Gloria Brewster and Hazel Church. She was a graduate of Danville School of Nursing. She retired from Morehead Memorial Hospital after 28 years as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Surviving are her son, Philip E. Haynes Sr. of Lexington, N.C., and one grandchild. Her funeral will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Martinsville Chapel, with the Rev. Ruth Louise Routon Ruth Louise Routon, 98, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at Runk and Pratt Residential Adult Care Center on Leesville Road, where she had received excellent and loving care. Born Aug. 2, 1912, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Mildred O'Brien Routon and the late Iverson Herman Routon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Odell Parker and Mrs. Annie Megginson, and two brothers, Harry Routon and Hobson Routon. Ruth was a longtime member of College Hill Baptist Church. She enjoyed a long and successful career as an office manager, working first at Lynchburg Truck and Equipment for 25 years and later for Harris Trucking, Lawrence Transfer, and Powell's Truck and Equipment. Ruth loved cooking and enjoyed sharing the fruits of her labor with friends and neighbors. She is survived by two nieces, Sandra Elder, of Forest, and Maxine Candler of Lake Charles, La., two nephews, Talmadge and David Routon, of Lynchburg, and a special niece by marriage, Selene Routon, of Forest. Ruth's request for no visitation or memorial service will be honored. CROWDER, Mr. William Henry "TBo," age 81, of South Hill, passed away Friday, November 5, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Doris Parrott Crowder; two sons, Jerry L. and wife, Vicki, William R. "Bill" and wife, Karen; six grandchildren, Michelle Allen and husband, Bland, Jason Crowder and wife, Shannon, Ashley Leslie and husband, Vick, Justin Crowder, Taylor Crowder and fiancee', Chip Parrish, and William Crowder Jr.; four great-grandchildren, Ashley and Lindsey Allen and Keaton and Kimball Crowder; two brothers, Charles and Samuel. He was predeceased by his parents, James A. and Sarah Jane Roberts Crowder; sisters, Elizabeth Hudson, Virginia Napier, and Ruth Wilson; and brothers, James, Douglas, and Harvey Drew. Mr. Crowder retired in 1991 after 31 years with Burlington Industries/BGF. He served in the United States Army and was a lifetime member of Southside Rescue Squad and the American Legion. He was a member and trustee of Ephesus Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, chairman of deacons and was named a deacon emeritus. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, November 8, 2010 at Farrar Funeral Chapel with interment to follow at Ephesus Baptist Church. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall after the service. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Farrar Funeral Home. FABRY, William "Bill" Franklin Sr., 87, of Chesterfield, left this mortal life on November 3, 2010. He was born October 16, 1923 in Rossmore, W.Va. as the third of six children of Austrian immigrants. As a young man at Milton High School he ran track, and worked part-time in Bischoff Glass Plant, specializing in hand-blown glassware. After graduating high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S. Transport ship U.S.S. United States traversing the North Atlantic as a radio operator during WWII. During his Navy career he met Aileen Bell, an employee of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. On November 2, 1944 William and Aileen were married. He was discharged from the Navy in 1945 at the end of WWII and shortly after the birth of their son, William Jr. They relocated to Richmond where he continued his passion for photography by working with a local blueprint, photo-stat and engineering supplies company. In 1959, he opened the Bill Fabry Reproduction and Supply Company. Aileen and Bill worked together on the success of their company. Bill retired in 1990 after selling the business (which still bears his name). He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eunice Aileen Fabry. He is survived by his son, William F. Fabry Jr. and his wife, Linda; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and James Salerno; brothers and sister-in-law, John Fabry and Robert and Kathryn Fabry; grandchildren, Jason and Meredith Fabry. The family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday (today) at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Road (Rte. 10). His funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. William Aubrey Tucker "Billy" William Aubrey Tucker, 75, of 2403 Marysville Road, Altavista, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born January 15, 1935, in Lynchburg, the son of the late Willie Henry Tucker and Georgia Witt Cox. Billy was a retired employee with the City of Lynchburg and enjoyed gardening and farming after his retirement. He is survived by two sons, Kenneth Wayne Tucker and his wife, Michelle, of Forest, and William Robert Tucker, of Evington; two daughters, Brenda Tucker, of Altavista, and Agnes Marie Tucker and special friend, Kevin Kershner; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bobby Joe Tucker and his wife, Mary, and Ricky Wayne Tucker and his wife, Donna, both of Evington; three sisters, Emily Longwood and her husband, Gather, of Lynch Station, Barbara Jean Overfelt and her husband, Paul, and Joyce Martin and her husband, Don, both of Roanoke' one sister-in-law, Betty Ann Tucker, of Evington; and two special friends, Rose Marie Cox, of Altavista, and Louise Tucker, of Evington. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard N. and Raymond Tucker. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at the Tucker Family Cemetery by the Pastor Dwight Weaver. Winston Elroy Harvey Winston Elroy Harvey, 76, of Fairfax, passed away Monday, Oct. 25, 2010. Born in Amherst County, he was the only child of James Riley Harvey and Ruth Mantiply Harvey. He was a 1951 graduate of Temperance High School, and a 1955 graduate of Lynchburg College. After college, he joined the Navy. Winston sold insurance for Travelers Insurance and later became a bail bondsman for Brown's Bondsman's in Fairfax until he retired in 2005. He was an active member of Amherst Legion Post 177 in Fairfax. Winston was a sports enthusiast and an avid Washington Redskins fan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his cousin and lifelong friend, Glen Harvey. He is survived by his aunts, Shirley Harvey Campbell (R. Lloyd Campbell), of Lynchburg, Jean Harvey Brockman (James E. Brockman), of Amherst, Adis Canody (the late John Roy Canody), of Amherst, life, and a host of friends and family.
