DEARBORN, Alexander Rhodolphus III, 86, of Houston, Texas, passed away Thursday, November 11, 2010. Mr. Dearborn was born in Houston, Texas on September 24, 1924. After graduating from high school, he served in the United States Navy during World War II. After proudly serving his country, he graduated from the University of the South, and received his Master of Education degree from the University of Houston. He served as the headmaster and coach at Highland School, Warrenton, Va.; St. Joseph, Boynton Beach, Fla.; Tuscaloosa Academy, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and Eutaw Academy, Eutaw, Ala. He was also member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Mountain Brook, Ala. Bertram J. Myers NORFOLK - Bertram Jett Myers, civic leader, real estate developer, and retailer, passed away peacefully at his home in Norfolk, Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010. Bertram, known as Bert, was a founder and board member of several Norfolk institutions, including Sentara Hospital, Eastern Virginia Medical School, the Harbor Club, and Scope. Born Aug. 24, 1922 in Norfolk to the late Julius and Beatrice Kanter Myers, he attended Taylor Elementary, Blair Junior High School and Maury High School. He attended Washington and Lee University where he graduated in 1944 with a BS in commerce. He joined the U.S. Navy and attended Officer Candidate School (OSC) at Columbia University in New York then fought in World War II in the South Pacific as a navigator and lieutenant JG on the LST-743. When he returned to Norfolk, he joined his family business and commenced projects in real estate as the developer of Downtown Plaza Shopping Center, located on St. Paul's Boulevard. He also created Suburban House and Granby House, assisted-living for the elderly, and other projects. Bert was on the board of Leigh Memorial Hospital as vice president and a longtime member of the finance committee, including when Leigh Memorial joined with Norfolk General Hospital to form Sentara. He served on the board of Sentara. He was on the board of the Harbor Club from 1981-1987 including House Chairman 1982-1987 and took an active role in the finance and other committees. He served on the board of Scope Convention Center, when it was founded, and for many years afterwards. Bert was a member and former board member of Congregation Beth El, where Myers Hall is named for his family. Bert loved his family, Judaism and the City of Norfolk. As a city leader, he participated in delegations that travelled to sister-cities in England, Japan and France as part of a cultural- business exchange and received delegations from other countries. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sue Bartley Myers; and three children, Beth Myers, Mark Myers and Alyson Myers; and son-in-law David Lawson and daughter-in-law, Gwen Myers. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Brent Myers-Lawson, Eden Rose Myers, Dashel Jett Myers and Presley Ann Myers; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Myers Mindel; and brother, Geoffrey Myers. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 14, at Congregation Beth El. Billie Lavone Tisdale Burns, 82, passed away suddenly, but peacefully, on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center with her daughter holding her hand as she left this world., Billie was born in Owanka, South Dakota, on August 29, 1928, to James L. Tisdale, formerly of Barboursville, Virginia, and Golda M. Rifenburg Tisdale of Owanka., She grew up in South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado and Oregon. She graduated from Drain Main High School in Drain, Oregon. Later, Billie married William Burns, who served in the United States Navy and with whom she led a nomadic life as a Navy wife. While her children were growing up, she was a homemaker. When they grew up, she went back to school and after graduation; she began a career in nursing in Jacksonville, Florida. A dedicated nurse, she later retired from Martha Jefferson Hospital. She then went on working as a nurse part-time in home health care., Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Sandra "Sandi" Burns Bennett Dulaney and her husband, James Fillmore, of Charlottesville, and Billie's son, William Jerry Burns and his wife, Eileen, of Staunton; and three grandchildren, Jeff Bennett of Elberton, Georgia, James and Kaila Burns of Staunton. A devoted county servant who befriended all who came through, Charles became known and loved by everyone who came into contact with him. Dawn was 49 and had the disease for eight years, although she never let it slow her down., She was an occupational therapist and worked in the school systems with PREP, and the last few years she worked for the Albemarle Therapy Center in Charlottesville., She is deeply missed by her colleagues and clients for her amazing dedication, spirit, and results., Dawn is also deeply missed by her surviving family. Her four sisters, April, Melody, Tara and Twila; and the nieces and nephews in those families; plus her parents, Frank and Wanda Poleski. She is dearly missed by her husband, Don., In her spiritual life she was involved deeply with Salem United Methodist Church in Fluvanna County, where she was actively engaged in their youth programs. She also loved to go to Christ Community Church in Charlottesville for their inspiring services and engaged with some of them in a home Bible study group.The home group has been unbelievably supportive during her illness and passing., Dawn wished to be cremated and Sheridan Funeral Home is handling those arrangements. No funeral or services are planned, but if you want to have a little silence, reading, or hymn, that would be great. Doris "Dot" Woody Cash Doris Katherine "Dot" Woody Cash, 69, of Madison Heights, entered into eternal rest Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, at her residence. Born in Lynchburg, March 2, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Edward W. "Skin" Woody and Gladys Viar Woody. Dot was well known and well loved in Amherst County; she was a true entrepreneur and remained active in investing and managing real estate all over Amherst County. Dot loved all people, and her loyalty to God could never be questioned. She was an avid reader and scholar of the Bible and loved to share her knowledge with all. She was a talented artist, story-teller, and frequently quoted references from the Bible. We know she is at peace, and we will see her again in Heaven. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon Anders-Allen; her husbands, Andy Anders and William "Greekie" Macheras, and one brother, E.W. Woody. She is survived by her son, Theodore Gus "Teddy" Macheras, and Michelle L. COTHRAN, Dorothy Thompson, 84, widow of Julian Evans Cothran, was called to heaven on Friday, November 12, 2010 at her home in Blacksburg, Va. "Dot," as she's known to those who loved her, lived a very full life. Following graduation from Pan American Business College in Richmond, Va., she was employed as an accountant at Bryan Brother's. She retired after many dedicated years, only to return again to the workforce years later with the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Corrections. In 1989, she retired again but never stopped working. A lifetime member of the UMC, she was active in her church and enjoyed many things from yard work to reading. She is survived by her loving sister, Dora Lewis of Lawrenceville, Va.; as well as her three children, Brent Cothran and Nancy Cothran of Blacksburg and Barbara Liles of Shawsville; four grandchildren, Dawn Cothran of Asheville, N.C., Joey Cothran of Richmond, Dee Ann Bruce and Wade Liles of Shawsville; and three great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Madison and Talan Bruce of Shawsville. Edna Haseltine Keesee BRISTOL, Va. Edna Haseltine Keesee, 80, died on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010, in the Conway Regional Hospital Center. She was born in Erwin, Tenn., on Sept. 24, 1930, a daughter of the late James Wilson White and Phoebe Hampton White. Nov 14, 2010 The funeral for Elizabeth Arnitta Day Ferguson, 75, of 1200 Country Club Drive, Martinsville, who died Nov. 11, 2010, at her home, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Moral Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Eloise Moorman Williams Jan. 22, 195O - Nov. 11, 2010 On Thursday morning, Nov. 11, 2010, Eloise Williams transitioned peacefully into eternal life at Lynchburg General Hospital. God gently whispered to our loved one, our beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law and friend, to come home and take her eternal rest. At an early age, Eloise professed her love for Christ and joined the First Baptist Church in Altavista, where she served faithfully until her health failed. Eloise had a strong passion and love for children and she was extremely close with many of the children who lived in her community. Eloise was one of eight children born to the late Richard and Virginia Moorman, of Altavista. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Tevin Boone, one sister, Irene MacCutcheon, and three brothers, Richard Moorman Jr., Charlie Moorman and William Moorman. She is survived by her devoted and loving sister, Margaret Burton, of Altavista, and two devoted brothers, Louis Moorman, of Dallas, Texas, and Oliver Moorman, of Altavista. She is also survived by seven sisters-in-law, Rose Moorman, of Dallas, Texas, Daisy Moorman and Betty Moorman, of Altavista, Sarah Williams, Ida Williams, and Margie Parrott, of Baltimore, Md., and Hazel Burney, of Ivanhoe, N.C.; and two brothers-in-law, James Parrott, of Baltimore, Md., and Henry Burney, of Ivanhoe, N.C. Eloise was educated in the public schools of Campbell County, and she graduated in 1968 from Campbell County High School. After graduating from high school, she married Donald, the love of her life. In 1996, Eloise retired from Abbott Laboratories after 22 years of service. In 1968, Eloise and Donald united in holy matrimony and, thereafter, resided in Altavista, surrounded by family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted husband of 42 years, her five children, Angela Boone (Charles), of Hurt, Donald Williams Jr. (LaWanda), of Madison Heights, Tausha Jackson (Curtis), of Pittsburgh, Pa., Tonya Williams and Sheila Williams, of Altavista; seven grandchildren, Tyler Boone, Trevor Boone, Cameron Williams, Taylor Boone, Tristan Boone, Donice Williams and Donovan Williams; and an extended circle of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Emma Olson NORFOLK - Emma Olson, 82, passed away at home Wednesday evening, Nov. 10, 2010. She was born March 26, 1928 in Greding, Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1955. She was predeceased by her parents, Willibald and Maria Lodermeyer; a brother, Willibald Lodermeyer; and two sisters, Johanna Hoffmann and Maria Schwer. She was one of the owners of the German Pantry Restaurant/Deli in Norfolk for 19 years. She was a charter member and past president of the German European American Society of Virginia. She was also an avid sailor and member of the Hampton Roads Fleet 30 Sailing Club. Even though she had been legally blind for seven years, it never stopped her from getting underway on her sailboat "Cinderella II" for new horizons as often as she could. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, David Olson; daughter, Marjorie Wood of Norfolk; two grandsons, Chad and Brian Bernhard of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and four sisters, Therese Meixner and her husband Guenter Rose and Luise Fischer, all of Norfolk and Wallburga Wagenknecht and Josefina Mayer of Germany. A graveside service will be held Saturday, Nov. 27, at 10 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens followed by a celebration of her life; location to be announced at the service. Cremation and Funeral Services of Tidewater is handling arrangements. Fred Thomas Barr BRISTOL, Tenn. Fred Thomas Barr, age 97, went to be with the Lord Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, in the Bristol Regional Med ical Center, surrounded by his three daughters. He was born Jan. 22, 1913 in Bristol Tennessee, a son of the late Nathan Elbert and Alma Sampson Barr, and he has lived all of his life in the Bristol area. He retired after 53 years of service from Hatchers Cleaners, and was a former employee of Troy Laundry. After retiring, he worked as the custodian of Anderson Street United Methodist Church, where he was also a member. He was a 1935 graduate of Blountville High School, and a member of the King Masonic Lodge 461 and the Scottish Rite. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Elizabeth Combs. He is survived by daughters, Nancy Congleton, Linda Dannelly, and Mary (Susie) Leonard and husband, Terry; grandchildren, Sherri Rosales and husband, David, Vicki Christman and Bill, Sean Dannelly and wife, Melissa, Darren Dannelly, and Kim Leonard Phillips and husband, Jonathan; and eight great-grandchildren. Frederick W. Butt VIRGINIA BEACH - Frederick William "Bill" Butt, 79, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010 in Virginia Beach. He was the son of the late Alvin and Eula Jaiser. He was predeceased by a daughter, Edie Hatchel. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; four surviving sons, William Steven, Terry, Wayne and James; three surviving daughters, Nancy, Shirley Gay and Pam; and two surviving sisters, Mellie Maddox and Margaret Ann Connelley. Bill was a member of the Masonic Lodge Lynnhaven No. 120 and the Khedive Shrine Center. He was a Late Model Sportsman Stock Car driver in the 1970s who raced at Langley Raceway. He was a commercial/instrument/ multi-engine rated pilot and was an avid yachtsman. Bill grew up in Ocean View and Willoughby. He was a member of the U.S. Navy, he worked for The Virginian-Pilot, and retired from the Washington Star as a printer. Bill was a previous owner of Larkspur Texaco. A native of Portsmouth, Mr. Ely retired from the Navy Regional Medical Center as a medical technician after 20 years of service. He was a member of St. John Baptist Church in Portsmouth, chairman of Mount Hermon Improvement Foundation and an Army veteran of the Vietnam era, having served with the 82nd Airborne. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Dorothy S. Ely; two sons, James P. Ely and Daryl J. Ely; his mother, Mildred J. After residing in Richmond, Va., Ricky joined First Baptist Church where he served as a member of the Men's Usher Board., Ricky received his formal education in Petersburg, Va., and was a member of the Petersburg High School Class of 1972. After high school graduation, Ricky attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. and later graduated from The University of Richmond in Richmond, Va., He was employed by the State of Virginia as an Information Technology Specialist for the Virginia Information Technology Agency (VITA). He was an active member in his community and served as a member of the Winter Hills Association., Ricky had a passion for acting in plays and attending the theatre. He enjoyed traveling, art, and sports, including tennis and football. He was physically active and spent many hours in the gym. Ricky was a kind and loving son and brother and was devoted to his family. He was a father figure to his nieces and nephews and was always there to provide support and cheer them on. Jon worked as a social worker with the City of Richmond (RBHA) for more than nine years. FISHER, Juanita W., 86, of Dinwiddie County, passed away on Friday, November 12, 2010, at Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Richmond, Va. Mrs. Fisher was a native of Middlesex County, Va. and the daughter of the late Wallace J. and Evelyn Chalmers White. She was a member of Western Heights Baptist Church, an original member of the church building committee, and had retired after 27 years of service as a secretary of Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company. She was a matron at the Virginia Methodist Children's Home, Richmond. Mrs. Fisher is survived by her husband of 60 years, Richard C. Fisher Sr.; two sons, John G. Fisher and wife, Donna K., of Quinton, Va. and Richard C. Fisher Jr. of Dinwiddie; four grandchildren, Michael Fisher, Matthew Fisher, Richard Fisher III and Paige Fisher; one sister, Shirley Higdon of Richmond; and two brothers, Virgil White of Richmond and Macey White Sr. of Hartfield, Va. Julius Gostel VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired U.S. Navy Chief Warrant Officer 3 Julius "Gus" Gostel, 93, formerly of Norfolk, died Nov. 10, 2010 in Virginia Beach. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn Morgan Gostel; his parents, a brother and a sister. The son of Austrian immigrants, he was born April 13, 1917 in New York City and grew up in Miami. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression and enlisted in the Navy in 1937. On the morning of Dec. 7, 1941 he was a signalman second class on duty in the Navy Signal Tower at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked. He saw action throughout World War II, participated in the invasion of North Africa, the battles of Tarawa, Saipan and Iwo Jima and supported other Pacific island campaigns. He was a longtime member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, the USS Terror shipmates group and other Navy-related organizations. After retiring, Mr. Gostel operated an insurance agency in Norfolk. He was an active member of Norview United Methodist Church for 50 years and most recently attended Virginia Beach United Methodist. He was a 32 Degree Mason and member of the Khedive Temple, the Sojourners and the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce. For many years, he was active in Boy Scouts and received the Silver Beaver award for outstanding service. Mr. Gostel is survived by four sons, retired U.S. Navy Capt. SC Julius Gostel Jr. and wife Barbara of Viera, Fla., Keith T. Gostel and wife Sheree of Quinton, R. Mark Gostel of Portsmouth and John A. Gostel and wife Mary of Fairfax; and one daughter, Melinda G. Forbes and husband Curtis of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, P. Forbes and Matthew, Andrew, Felix, Morgan, Melissa, Harley, Laura, Robbie and U.S. Navy Lt. JG Christopher R. Gostel; and five great-grandchildren, Camryn, Meghan, Amanda, Cullen and Virginia Gostel. The family extends special appreciation to the kind- hearted and dedicated caregivers of Medi Home Health & Hospice and of Clare Bridge of Virginia Beach Estates. Lucy Neff Hilton NORFOLK - Lucy Neff Hilton, beloved Mother, grand lady and friend passed peacefully Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010. Lucy will be laid to rest in her beloved home of Norfolk, where the relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral in Elmwood Cemetery at the graveside, Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 10 a.m. Farewell grand lady, we are all the better for having been a part of your life. Lucy was born Jan. 13, 1919 in Norfolk. She was the daughter of the late Clarence A. Neff and Lucy Latone Thom Neff. Lucy reluctantly left Bay Point, Fla., to live in Mount Pleasant, S.C., for the last six years of her amazing life. Her heart remained in Florida where she was loved and admired by a wonderful group of friends. Lucy lived this life as gracefully as any woman ever has or shall. Those of us blessed by her charm, wit, wisdom and charisma will miss her. Lucy leaves her two sons, John J. Hilton III and his wife Linda of Hollywood, S.C., and Cameron T. Hilton and his wife Janet of Mount Pleasant, S.C. Lucy is also survived by two equally beautiful and charming granddaughters, Laura Hilton James and her husband Rob of North Charleston, S.C., and Katherine Anne Thom Hilton of Denver. Lucy leaves two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Ella James. Three wonderful friends and companions sadly send their farewell love to Lucy: Sarah B. Marcus A. Johnson Sr. CHESAPEAKE - On Nov. 10, 2010 Marcus Alton Johnson Sr. departed this life peacefully. He was born June 30, 1937 in Littleton, N.C., to the late Whitt and Otelia Johnson. He graduated from McIver High School in Littleton, and received his Bachelor's Degree in business administration from Bluefield State College in Bluefield, W.Va. He later attained a Bachelor's Degree in business administration from Norfolk State University. Marcus retired from Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority after 37 years of service and later worked for the Franklin Housing Authority as acting executive director. At an early age, Marcus became a member of Fidelity Baptist Church in Littleton. After moving to Norfolk, he became a faithful member of First Calvary Baptist Church where he served as head of the Deacon Board. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Marjorie; three sons, Marcus Jr. and his wife Natalya, Kyle, and Ricky and his wife Kristie; two grandsons, Maxim and Nikita; a stepgranddaughter, Gabrielle; three brothers and four sisters. Mary Ella Baull SOUTHPORT - Mary Ella Baull, 94, of Southport, formerly of Virginia Beach, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010 at Dosher Nursing Center in Southport. Mrs. Baull was born March 13, 1916 in Accomack County, Virginia, daughter of the late Samuel and Sarah Spence Isdell. She was a charter member of First Colonial Baptist Church of Virginia Beach, and taught the 4-year old Sunday school class for many years. Everyone who knew her affectionately called her Nana. Betty Sue Moehlenkamp Betty Sue Moehlenkamp, 79, of Lynchburg, died suddenly Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010. She was the wife of the late Jack Moehlenkamp, former Randolph Macon Women's College music professor and conductor of the Roanoke Symphony. Betty Sue was born in Elizabeth, N.J., raised in Bethlehem, Pa., and came to Lynchburg in 1949 to attend Randolph Macon Women's College. She was a highly acclaimed student, receiving membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Outstanding Young Women of America. She was awarded a Fulbright Grant to study dance at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, and received a master's degree in dance from Sarah Lawrence College. Pursuing a lifelong passion for dance, she worked with the Martha Graham Dance Company and many noted choreographers, including Jose Limone and Merce Cunningham. She taught modern dance at Sweet Briar College and the University of Maryland and served as chairman of the Dance Department at both Randolph Macon Women's College and the University of South Florida. In the Lynchburg area, she was continually involved in dance education as an instructor and choreographer for the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center, Forest Dance Academy and several E.C. Glass musical productions. She founded the Dance Theatre of Central Virginia in 1982, which provided innovative dance performances to the Lynchburg area for 20 years. A very active contributor to community arts endeavors, Betty Sue served as a member of the Lynchburg Arts Council and the Lynchburg Community Concerts. DestinationHeaven., He passed away surrounded by his loving children and grandchildren at Augusta Health of Fishersville., He was the son of the late Orville Thomas Anderson and Helen Louise Padgett Anderson. Born and raised in the city of Waynesboro, he would have graduated with his Waynesboro High Class of 1952, if it were not for volunteering to serve his country. Mr. Anderson proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1952 until 1958. He flew 25 missions as an aerial gunner during the Korean Conflict and the Cold War., Mr. Anderson was married to his wife, Betty Jean (Holly) Anderson, for 40 years, who is now deceased. Phillip Taswell Sutphin Phillip Taswell Sutphin, 69, of Evington, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010. He was the husband of Sheron Lee Sutphin for 48 years. Phillip was born Tuesday, May 13, 1941, in Pulaski County. He was a son of the late Edith Sirt Sutphin and Taswell Sutphin. In addition to his wife, Phillip is survived by four sons, Phillip David Sutphin and his wife, Travain, of Forest, Brian Joseph Sutphin, of St. Leonard, Md., Marcus Timothy Sutphin and his wife, Melissa, of Forest, and Stephen Matthew Sutphin and his wife, Cathy, of Evington; 14 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a brother, Maynard Sutphin, and his wife, Glenna, of Pulaski; and a sister, Betty Wagner, and her husband, Willis, of Kingsport, Tenn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Blankenship, and three brothers, Emory, Everett and Vernon. While attending James Madison University, she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. She received a Master of Science degree in speech language pathology in 2009 from the University of the District of Columbia. She was predeceased by her father, Milton Norman; maternal and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William and Anna Hall of Norfolk; Mr. Milton Lee Norman of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Mrs. Clara Etta Norman of Chicago. GUY, Richard, 88, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2010, at Woodhaven Hall at Williamsburg Landing. Richie was born and raised in Cranford, New Jersey. In 1944, he graduated from Cornell University School of Engineering and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. In 1944, he married his "hometown sweetheart," Helen Sperry, with whom he shared 65 happy years. Following his war time military service, they settled in Cranford and he worked for Ingersoll-Rand Company. Richie worked for Ingersoll-Rand until 1970, rising to the head of the division which manufactured and sold earth impacting machinery. From 1964 to 1969, he and Helen and their family lived in Richmond, Va., after which they returned to their roots in Summit, N.J. In 1970, he went to work for Argo Pneumatic Co., Inc., a company engaged in the sale of hydraulic and pneumatic tools. In 1996, Richie and Helen retired to Williamsburg and lived and were active members of the community at Kingsmill. They were members of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Richie was predeceased by his much loved wife in September 2009. He is survived by their three children and their spouses, Peter and Betsy Guy of Richmond, Richard and Nancy Guy of Virginia Beach, Lois and Jim Cody of Jamesville, N.Y.; and by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Gray Guy and his wife, Rebecca, and their children, Alex and Elizabeth, of Arlington, Va., Rebecca Guy Thompson and her husband, Carl, of Richmond, Margaret Helen Guy of Alexandria, Va., Donald Guy of Cambridge, Mass., and Eileen Cody and Christine Cody of Jamesville, N.Y. Samuel Bruce Copeland Jr., Samuel Bruce Copeland Jr. died peacefully at home at Lake Park Retirement Center in Oakland, California, on Thursday, October 28, 2010, he was 85., Born in New Castle, Pennsylvania, on June 29, 1925, he entered Oberlin College in Ohio, in 1943, where he joined a Naval V12 Unit. He completed his BA at Muskingum College in Ohio, in 1947. His life insurance career began in sales and estate planning in Walnut Creek and Sacramento, California. He held senior executive positions in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Chicago, Illinois, where he later worked in real estate. In Charleston, West Virginia, and Charlottesville, Virginia, he was an independent financial planner and business consultant. In 2004, he and his wife, Carol, retired to her hometown, Berkeley, California., Bruce was a passionate advocate for social justice, including equality for women and minorities in the workplace. Visionary and practical, and a self-described agent of change, he was excited by the challenge of finding and funding workable solutions to systemic problems. He offered his leadership and financial expertise to many innovative initiatives with professional, community and church groups, including low-income housing, housing for the disabled and those with AIDS, and services for the homeless., A Charlottesville resident from 1996 until 2004, he was an active board member at the Charlottesville Senior Center from 1999 until 2003. He was one of the founding members of the African-American Teaching Fellows program of Charlottesville/Abermarle. Thelma Pickrel Blanchard ALTAVISTA Thelma Pickrel Blanchard, 98, of Altavista, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at Autumn Care in Altavista. Born May 19, 1912, in Gretna, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Pickrel and Hester Ann George Pickrel. She spent most of her childhood in and around the area, moving to Altavista and to Greensboro, N.C. After her marriage in 1933 to Charles Di Giulian, she moved to the Washington, D.C., area. In the 1950s, she worked at Jelleff's Department Store for a while and became manager of the children's department. Here she met and married Curtis Bagget, who died in 1973. Soon after, a friend suggested that she become resident manager for apartment buildings, a job she held until her retirement. She managed many buildings in the Washington area, but none were a bigger challenge than the Watergate. She returned to Altavista in the late 1970s to spend time with her sister, Evelyn Farmer, and her mother, Hester Ann, who lived with her until her marriage to Raleigh Blanchard. Unfortunately, Raleigh passed away in the winter of 1984. One of her greatest pleasures in Altavista was the "Hardee Group" who met at Hardee's for coffee and biscuits every week. Here she made many new friends and renewed friendships with old friends. She spent her last years at Autumn Care of Altavista. She is survived by a daughter, Marina Del Grosso, of Olney, Md.; a sister, Wilda P. Smith, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Hoyle (Garry), Carolyn Del Grosso, Michael Del Grosso (Susan), David Del Grosso, James Del Grosso, Angela Martin (David), and Joanna Del Grosso (Mike Badostain); three great-grandchildren, Tristan Hoyle, Katherine Hoyle and Hilary Hoyle; and four great-great-grandchildren, Brady and Joseph Hoyle, and Ashley and Paige Badostain. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, at Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. Richard T. Woodall. Private interment will follow in Gretna Burial Park. Nov 14, 2010 The funeral for Thelma Wood Cassell, 82, of 4859 Jeb Stuart Highway, Vesta, who died Nov. 11, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be at 2 p.m. today at Norris Funeral Services Stuart Chapel. Elder Allen Terry and Bill Banks will officiate. Burial will be in the Plaster family cemetery at Vesta. She was born in Vesta on Nov. 18, 1927, to Winnie Howell Wood and Dewey G. Wood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Maynard Leon Cassell; and a brother, Arthur Dewey Wood. She was educated at Meadows of Dan elementary and high schools, and she worked as the bookkeeper for her husband's construction company, John H. Cassell Construction. She also was elected a Patrick County magistrate. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 25, and she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was of the Christian faith. Surviving are her husband of 66 years, John Henry Cassell Jr.; a son, Arnold Wayne Cassell of Goode; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren. He retired from the United States Navy as a lieutenant, having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette A. Brown; a son, Thomas J. Brown of Chesapeake; a goddaughter, Gina M. Berg; a sister, Nell Sue Jolly of Warrior, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Patricia M. Brown of N. Little Rock, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Brown Parnham and two brothers, Robert E. Brown and Jerome Brown. Virginia A. McCloughan VIRGINIA BEACH - Virginia A. McCloughan, 74, of Onancock, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010 in Virginia Beach after battling cancer for the past two years. She was born Feb. 23, 1936 in Washington, D.C., to Frank and Lillian Nichols. She is survived by her son, Mike McCloughan of Virginia Beach; daughter, Cathy Wyne of Poolesville, Md.; brother, Tom Nichols of Wanque, N.J.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Don. She graduated from Blair High School and was employed by the Montgomery County school system. She touched many with her love, humor and kindness throughout her life. She was active in her community as a Cancer Society volunteer, Daughter of the American Revolution, a member of the Onancock Baptist Church and she was a Explorer Post leader serving as a role model for young men and women.
