Albert W. Smelser Jr. PORTSMOUTH - Albert Winifred Smelser Jr., 85, formerly of the 4400 block of Columbia St., passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010. A native of Portsmouth, Albert retired from Seaboard Railroad, then went on to work at Portsmouth Naval Hospital where he retired in 1978 and later worked at the Bide-a-Wee Golf Course in the Pro Shop. He was a proud World War II Army veteran with the 31st Infantry and was a member of DAV Chapter No. 41 and Westhaven Baptist Church. Albert was a member of the Western Branch Masonic Lodge No. 189 for more than 60 years; the Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies; the Khedive Shrine Temple; Portsmouth Shrine Club; past member of the Port Norfolk Royal Arch Chapter and the Legion of Honor with the Khedive Temple. Albert was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara B. Smelser. He is survived by his daughter, Anna Smelser Corey and her husband Thomas; two grandchildren, Kelly Corey and Thomas Corey III all of North Carolina; and a host of friends. A funeral with Masonic rites will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, with Dr. Tim Dixon officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Nov 12, 2010 Amos Jeffery "Bodine" Hundley, 49, of 921 Barrows Mill Road, Martinsville, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was born April 6, 1961, in Martinsville to Amos C. Hundley and Billye Richardson Hundley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles B. "Brad" Hundley, Joel Dean "Jody" Hundley and Anthony Richardson "Ricky" Hundley. He worked with his father as a tile repairman for more than 15 years. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, June Dalton Hundley of the home; a son, Michael Poynter of Martinsville; a brother, John R. "Randy" Hundley of Big Pine Key, Fla.; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Bernadine Ruth Ferguson Pearce ABINGDON, Va. Bernadine Ruth Ferguson Pearce, age 85, a well-known resident of the Rattle Creek Community, passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol Tennessee. She was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Akron, Ohio, a daughter of the late John Burdett Ferguson and Emaline McAllister Ferguson. She was a graduate of St. Vincent's High School in Akron and attended Akron University. She married Timothy Ward Pearce Jr. in 1949 and moved to Abingdon. She worked for Farmers Exchange Bank and Southern States when she first came to the area. She was a seamstress, and she and her husband were co-owners of Pearce Dry Cleaners for over 40 years. After retirement, she continued with her own alteration business. She and her husband provided a home and were caregivers to many family members through the years. She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Bristol Virginia. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Timothy Ward Pearce Jr.; one loving daughter, Susan Pearce Hayes; and five siblings. Survivors include two daughters, Betsy Pearce and Mary D. Hinchey and husband, Brian, all of Abingdon; one son, Timothy Ward Pearce III and wife, Kathy, of Abingdon; one sister, Eileen Herdina and husband, Joseph, of Savannah, Ga.; four grandchildren, Lucas Hayes, Chelsea Pearce, Morgan Pearce, and Adam Hinchey; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. Ms. Charmie resided in the Grosses Creek area her entire life. She was a lifetime member of Grosses Creek Baptist Church, where she served as clerk for many years. Blevins and Theodosia Pennington Blevins; her brother, William Basil Blevins; her first husband, Herbert Blevins; and her second husband Olin J. Mann. She is survived by one son, William (Bill) H.H. Christine Johnson Morris God and his angels came and walked Christine Johnson Morris, 92, to her heavenly home and into the arms of her loving husband, Murrell, on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010. Christine fought the good fight and was strong until her body had had enough. Christine was born in Charlotte County on Aug. 20, 1918, to the late Jasper and Emma Johnson. Christine was one of 11 children. She moved to Lynchburg, and on an unexpected night, met the love of her life, Murrell Morris. Christine and Murrell were married 63 years. Murrell left us all on July 12, 2003. Christine is survived by her daughter, Sandra Tilley, and her husband, Wayne; a step-grandson, Christopher Tilley, and his wife, Amanda, and his children, Madeline Bryce and Chase McBride, of Lynchburg; her step-granddaughter, Cameron Messin, and her husband, Andey, and their children, Olivia Elle and Noell Franklin, of Staunton. Her great-granddaughter, Madeline, was like a ray of sunshine in Christine's declining years. Madeline would climb in bed with her and snuggle up as did Chase. These were special moments for her. She is also survived by her sisters, Ethel Anderson, of Newport News, and Mary (Sis) Anderson, of Richmond; also surviving are sisters-in-law, Sadie Johnson, Marguerite Johnson and Inez Johnson, of Newport News, Loretta Johnson, of Virginia Beach, and Emily Morris, of Lynchburg. Her brother-in-law, Howard Morris, of Lynchburg, also survives. Christine was predeceased by sisters, Dorothy Williams, of Virginia Beach, and Jeanette Land, of Newport News; and brothers, Raymond, of Keysville, Jasper, Clarence and Curtis, of Newport News, and Clifton Johnson, of Virginia Beach. Christine was a member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church, the Top of the Hill Club and Friendly Circle of CHUMC. She worked and retired from Craddock Terry Shoe Corporation after more than 30 years. Her first love was her family, and her other love was gardening and her flowers and for many years belonged to the Rambling Brook Garden Club. Her animals were so special to her Skipper, Beau, Zack, Rufus and TeeTee. Christine was blessed with many dear and devoted nieces, Janice, Betty, Charlotte, Judy, Wanda and Debbie, as well as devoted nephews, Charlie, Larry, Terry and the three who were more like grandchildren, Ricky, Dennis and Brian. The great-nieces and nephews also were so special to her. We cannot fail to mention her two special angels and caregivers, Susan Graci and Shirley Dickerson. We are also blessed to have the support of Centra Hospice of the Hills and two special nurses, Allie Cowardin and Connie Bailey, without all these angels, Christine's final journey would have been so much more difficult. Evelyn Meade Carty BRISTOL, Va. Evelyn Meade Carty, 81, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol Tennessee, following an extended illness. She was born in Lebanon, Va., on June 9, 1929, a daughter of the late Stuart Meade and Lillie Farmer Meade. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Epperson Carty; and son, John Edward Carty. She had worked for Burroughs Shoes and was a loving and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was an active member of Beech Grove United Methodist Church. Mr. Hudgins retired as a harbor pilot with the Department of Defense and was previously a tugboat captain for many years. Jerry Stephanitsis NORFOLK - Gerasimos F. "Jerry" Stephanitsis, founder of the Norfolk Coffee & Tea Co., and who touched the lives of many in a positive way over the years, died peacefully in his Norfolk home Nov. 10, 2010. He was 100. Jerry was born in Chephalonia, Greece Feb. 10,1910 and immigrated to the United States in 1924. He was predeceased by his wife, Irene. Jerry became a U.S. citizen and proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a founder of the Park Place Civic League and was instrumental in building James Monroe Elementary School and The Park Place Center. He served on the Norfolk Model City Commission. He was the production manager for Mary Jane Bakery during his career before founding Norfolk Coffee & Tea Co. Jerry served his church, The Greek Orthodox Cathedral, faithfully in many ways. He has been a strong supporter of Eastern Virginia Medical School and donated his first social security check to the school when his wife Irene passed away with cancer in 1980. Jerry embraced life and people with a youthful and humble spirit, a charming wit and cheerful attitude and has enriched the lives of those fortunate enough to have had their lives touched by his. Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was presented with a Proclamation from the City of Norfolk on his 100th Birthday. Jerry is survived by his daughter, Irene Pahno and her husband Mickey; sons, Nicholas Stephanitsis and Chris Stephanitsis and his wife Kathryn; and daughter Eva Kyrus and her husband Christopher; his eight grandchildren, Christina and Irene Stephanitsis, George Pahno, Jerry, Barbara and Kassie Stephanitsis, Christy and Tommy Kyrus and two great- grandchildren. A funeral will be held in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral Monday at 11 a.m. with the Very Rev. Father Abrose-Bowers and Father Constantine Rogakos officiating. Nov 12, 2010 DANVILLE — Goldie Moran Jordan, 94, of 1238 Ferry Road, Danville, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at Riverside Health and Rehab Center. She was born Sept. 7, 1916, in Kingston, W.Va., to George Walter Moran and Binda Hall Moran. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Henry Jordan; a brother, L.D. Moran, and two sisters, Eva M. Turner and Vernell M. Lane, who lived most of their lives in Henry County. Jordan worked at Dan River Mills for 43 years, and she was the oldest member of Sandy Shores Baptist Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a daughter, Gaynelle Jordan Setliff of Danville; two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and a niece, nephew, great-nephew, and other family members, including several from Henry County. Harry B. Murphy Sr. CHESAPEAKE - Harry Burtron Murphy Sr., 87, completed his earthly journey Nov. 10, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II on the USS Elmore, was a member of the F.O.P. and retired from the Ford Motor Company after 33 years of service. Helen Everhart NORFOLK - Helen Everhart, 95, passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010. Born Helen Brandt Elsenhans Jan. 14, 1915 to parents Marguerite and George, she grew up in Camp Hill, Pa. After graduating in 1937 from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., she married Edgar S. Everhart. They lived in Baltimore before moving to Portsmouth, and then to Churchland. She later lived in Virginia Beach and eventually settled in Norfolk. She was active at Saint Christopher's Church in Portsmouth. She volunteered at her children's schools, at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, at the Chrysler Museum and for Lee's Friends. A lifelong lover of learning, Helen took classes at Old Dominion University and participated in study groups through the Association for Research and Enlightenment and Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She was a serious student of religion and depth psychology and maintained a strong interest in fine art and poetry. She will be remembered by those who knew and loved her for her sweet disposition and sense of humor. Helen is survived by four children, Katharine Paull of Los Angeles, Calif., Anne Bradley of Great Falls, Va., Brandt Everhart of Suffolk, and James Everhart of Bethesda, Md. She is also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Norfolk, in January 2011. Hiram Wesley Hogg BRISTOL, Va. Hiram Wesley Hogg, 102, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at NHC in Bristol Virginia. Hiram was born Feb. 23, 1908, in Roxana, Ky. to the late Kelly and Martha Ison Hogg. He was raised in Kentucky not long after the time of the Hatfield and McCoy feud, which took place close to the area of his heritage. He recalled the many stories of that epic drama in American folk lore, which he gleefully recounted and further embellished. He attended Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) and Moorhead College in Kentucky. During his junior year in college, at the time of the Depression, he had to return home and teach in a one-room elementary school in order to help support his family. He later moved to West Virginia, finding employment with a steel mill as an equipment operator of a large overhead crane that moved heavy crucibles filled with molten steel. He lived in the Gauley Bridge area and Fayetteville, W.Va., for over 40 years. He met his wife, Gladys Irene Gray, and was happily married for 67 years until she passed away in 2004. He worked as an insurance agent for Peoples Life Insurance Co. for many years. In addition to his parents and wife, Hiram was preceded in death by his infant sons, Kelley Stevenson Hogg and Bob Wesley Hogg. Hiram attributed his longevity to a happy life and a caring family. He was a member of Scenic Park Baptist Church and attended Victory Baptist Church. His favorite pastimes were gardening, hunting and fishing. He was a great storyteller and enjoyed reminiscing about his travels across country by train during the Great Depression and the diverse people he met during his life. The family would like to thank the NHC third floor nursing staff for the exceptional care they provided to Mr. Hogg. Survivors include his daughters, Debra Garland and husband, Jim, of Bristol Virginia, Betty Reddy of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Shirley Alvandian of Locust Grove, Va., and Joyce Gross and husband, George, of Middletown, Ohio; three sisters, Panny Stallard, Mae Boggs and Millie Wright, all of Kentucky; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service for Hiram Hogg will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Victory Baptist Church in Bristol Virginia, with Dr. Austin Cook officiating. ALLISON, John Warner, age 26, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010. John was born August 7, 1984 in Lexington, the son of Samuel Carey Allison and Sue Gentry Allison. A resident of Roanoke since 1989 and a 2002 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, John enjoyed music, sports, attended the University of South Carolina, and was a member of the 2nd Presbyterian Church in Roanoke. John is survived by his maternal grandparents, John R. Jorge Orlando Saavedra Jorge Orlando Saavedra, 50, of Lynchburg, went to be with his Savior on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010. He spent the last weeks of his life at home, surrounded by family and friends. He was the loving husband and best friend of Ronda Marie (Ayers) Saavedra for 20 years. Jorge was born Jan. 26, 1960, in Bogota, Colombia, the son of the late Orlando Saavedra and Isabel (Cardenas) Saavedra. In 1978, he graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in Alexandria, then proudly served his country and was a 20 year veteran of the United States Air Force. After retiring, from the military, he went on to work for 11 years at Babcock and Wilcox. He earned his BBA from Averett University in 2007. Jorge was also an active member of Calvary Chapel of Lynchburg. In addition to his wife, Jorge is survived by his beloved children, sons, Christopher Jorge Saavedra, of San Diego, Calif., and Joshua Glenn Saavedra, of Little Rock, Ark., and daughter, Julia Marie Mercedes Saavedra, of Lynchburg; sisters, Julia del Castillo and Rocio del Castillo, of Bogota, Colombia, Cecelia Guzman, of Port Chester, N.Y., Claudia del Castillo, of Charlotte, N.C., Joanna (Cope) Devers, of Monterey, Calif., and Jeanette Saavedra, of Bogota, Colombia; and brothers, Fernando del Castillo and Eduardo del Castillo, of Bogota, Colombia, and Nelson Arango del Castillo, of Ibague, Tolima, Colombia. He is also survived by a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws. Jorge was truly an extraordinary man who adored his family, who selflessly put the needs of others before his own, loved people, embraced life and lived it to the fullest and was an encourager and motivator like no other. Above all, he loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He never met a stranger and leaves behind many close friends, co-workers and Christian brothers and sisters. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Jorge's extended family, his church families at Calvary Chapel and Heritage Baptist Church, his co-workers at Babcock and Wilcox and all of his friends for their unwavering prayers, encouragement and support during Jorge's illness. She was a lifelong resident of the area and a former employee of Johnston Memorial Hospital, where she worked as an LPN for 40 years. Leon Schoenbaum NORFOLK - Leon Schoenbaum, 89, passed away Friday, Nov. 12, 2010. Born in Petersgurg, Va., to Emil and Goldie Schoenbaum, Leon grew up in Huntington, W.Va. He graduated from Huntington High School, and then attended Ohio State University, where he was a member of the Ohio State football and basketball teams. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the communication corps which brought him to Norfolk where he met Ruth Ann Silverman. In October of this year they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. In 1955, Leon, brought Shoney's restaurants to Tidewater, making it one of the first and most successful chains in the area. Using his restaurants, he became a proponent of equal rights by allowing everyone the right to be served in his stores. They lived for many years in Newport News and Kingsmill, where Leon enjoyed many hours playing golf. Leon is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann; his two daughters, Lynn and Bunny; his granddaughter, Rachel; his brother-in-law, Louis Silverman and his wife Bobbi Sue; his sisters-in-law, Betty Schoenbaum and Mickey Schoenbaum; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Ray; and brothers, Raymond, Alex and Howard. We are grateful to those at Harbor's Edge, Senior Corp and Odessy. Our special thanks go to Claudia Rider, Tennile Williams, Patricia Corley and Jennifer Novotny. She is survived by her sons, Hugh Dennis Pillow and wife, Sherry, of Warrenton, and Barry S. Pillow and wife, Cheryl, of Greensboro, N.C.; a grandson, Adrian S. Pillow, and wife, Heather; her great-grandchildren, Susan, Maxwell and Ava Pillow; her step-grandchildren, Jonathan White and wife, Carla, and Jennifer White; her step-great-grandson, Austin White; and her sisters, Nell Blanks and Reva DeKeyser, both of Lynchburg. HAAKE, Ruth Jacqueline, 95, of Midlothian, died on November 7, 2010. Ruth was born in Buffalo, N.Y. of deaf mute parents in straightened circumstances. Determined to educate herself she started working at the age of 13. She earned a BS in physical education from Boston University and an RN from Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. As an RN she was a public health nurse. Her physical education background led her to work as equitation instructor. A strong believer in community service, she taught the Horse and Pony Division of the Caroline County 4H and was a volunteer at Johnston-Willis Hospital for 25 years. She is survived by her husband, Arthur, with whom she bonded in 1937 and married in 1941. Other survivors are a daughter, Barbara Jo Jett, a grandson, Jeremy Houdershelt, and a great-granddaughter, Hayley. |

Tim Dooley Tim Dooley, age 46, died peacefully on November 8, 2010 at home with his family after a long battle with complications from Advanced Melanoma., Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1964, Tim was a graduate of Southlake High School in St. Claire Shores, Michigan. He held various sales positions and pursued a love for fast cars. Tim received numerous accolades in a racing experience that started in "Super Street" class and ended by becoming a notable contender on the competitive "IHRA pro-stock" national circuit. In tribute to his competitive nature, Tim took-up organized arm wrestling during the late 80's and early 90's and rose to achieve the ranking of #3 in the world in the 197 lb weight-class., In 2004, the Dooley family moved from Memphis, Tenn. to Northern Virginia, where Tim and Jeanine started a new chapter of their lives. Tim worked in the mortgage business and became one of the top sales representatives in his territory. Their daughter Kendall attended Battlefield High School where she became very involved with cheerleading while their son Collin attended Mountain View Elementary where he became a standout young athlete as the Dooley's became active members of the Haymarket/Gainesville community., Tim devoted countless volunteer hours to youth baseball in the area and sincerely enjoyed being a character-building mentor to young athletes in the community. Wilbur L. Johnson, Wilbur L. Johnson, 81, of Waynesboro, departed this life on Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at his residence., He was born on August 2, 1929, in Augusta County, a son of the late Vance and Catherine (Parrish) Johnson., He attended Augusta County Public Schools and was a member of Bethel Seventh Day Adventist Church. He served in the United States Army during the, and was a recipient of the, Wilbur was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille (Vaughn) Johnson; two brothers, Clarence and Julius Johnson; and one sister, Shirley Hoge., He is survived by three sons, Gerald and his wife, Queenie, W. KAUFELT, William E. "Way," 89, of Richmond, passed away on November 11, 2010. He was a beloved and generous husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, William E. and Josephine Kaufelt; and sister, Peggy Smith. Ed is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ethel Kaufelt; son, Chris Kaufelt (Ashley); daughters, Susan Johnson, Cindy Kaufelt; sister, Betty Miller (Jack); grandchildren, Jeff Buchanan (Cindy), Mark Johnson (Shannon), Tyler "Pete" Johnson, Lauren Kaufelt; great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Caitlin, Cameron; and beloved brother-in-law, Sunny Smith. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II, and attended the Village Presbyterian Church, where he was a longtime active and devoted member of The Men of the Church. William A. Moon Jr. ROANOKE - The Rev. William A. Moon Jr. of Roanoke, 92, died Nov. 9, 2010. He was born March 2, 1918 in Spout Spring, Va., the son of William Archer Moon Sr. and Mattie Martin Moon. He attended Ferrum College, Randolph Macon College, and Candler School of Theology, Emory University. He was a member and ordained elder of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church since 1946, retiring in 1983. During his career he served the following appointments: Halifax, Moneta, Gretna, Peakland, Franktown- Johnsons, Charity, Luray, Cokesbury, Fairmount Park and Forest Road. Survivors include his wife, Wise Spigner Moon; a daughter, Margaret W. Moon and her husband John J. Davies III of Culpeper; three sons, the Rev. William A. Moon III and his wife Ann of Arcadia, La., Dr. Edward T. Moon and his longtime companion Joseph G. Gallo of Norristown, Pa., Charles S. Moon and his wife Nancy of Lorton, Va. Other survivors include his brother, Roy A. Moon; his sister, Margaret A. Moon; grandchildren, Emily M. Brownlee, William A. Moon IV and David A. Moon; four great-grandchildren, a nephew, a niece and numerous cousins. God in his infinite wisdom called home his faithful servant, Ms. Willie Ruth Salter, 60, of 620 Windham St., Apt. 10, Petersburg, Va., on Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at 1:10 p.m. at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Ga., Ruth "Ru-baby," as she was so affectionately called, was born on Nov. 11, 1949, to the late Mr. Joe Salter Jr., and Mother Minnie L. Williams Salter-Merritt in Terrell County, Dawson, Ga., Ruth was proceeded in death by her father, Mr. Joe Salter Jr.; grandmother, Mary L. Salter; maternal grandmother, Mary C. Williams; maternal grandfather, Jimmy L. Williams; stepfather, Charlie Merritt; aunt, Flayzell Howard; and brother, Joseph L. Salter., Ruth accepted Christ at an early age at Sardis Missionary Baptist Church in Dawson, Ga. In 1970, she became a member of Calvary Temple Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Petersburg, Va., under the leadership of Apostle Wesley M. Taylor Sr. She was baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost while at Calvary Temple (Mt. Calvary). She moved to Albany, Ga., in 1998 and joined Apostolic Church of Jesus Inc., under the leadership of Elder Franklin Smith. She moved back to Virginia in 2008 and joined Calvary Outreach Revival Center, under the leadership of District Elder Irving S. Taylor. Ruth loved the Lord and would do whatever she could do to benefit the growth of the ministry., Her passion was for her four grandchildren, The "K" Kids. They were her pride and joy, as well as her two daughters. She had an infectious laugh that would fill the room; very seldom did she have a frown on her face. She was loved by many and was known as "Mama Ruth" to a lot of people. She will be greatly missed., She leaves to cherish her memories, a devoted and loving mother, Minnie L. Nov 12, 2010 The graveside service for Wilmer June "Whimpy" Jones Sr., 73, of Fieldale, who died Nov. 9, 2010, was held Thursday at Roselawn Burial Park with Pastor Mike Dyer officiating. Military honors were by 1st Sgt. Fred Lewis, Sgt. Mitchell Quincy and Spc. Robert Ricketts of the Virginia Army National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team. Pallbearers were Scott White, Glen Turner, Jerry Tawney, Steve Perry and J.D. Harmon. In addition to those previously listed, Jones was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Lynn Jones; and a son, Kenneth Wayne Jones.
