Ada Finley

Ada Finley Ada Finley, age 73, of Manassas, passed away November 4th, 2010, at the Prince William Hospital., Lucy Ada Layne Finley was born January 31st, 1937 in Lee County, N.C. Ada was the daughter of James Oscar and Vera Jane Banner Layne. She married William Ronald Finley on April 11th, 1959, at the White Hill Presbyterian Church in Lee County. She was a member of the Manassas Presbyterian Church and a past president of the Manassas Art Guild. Ada was also an accomplished artist, receiving several awards and honors for her paintings that were shown in several galleries in the Washington, D.C. area. She served three years in the United States Air Force, discharged in 1958. Her primary duty station was Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. Ada was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend., She was preceded in death by her parents and infant son, William Ronald Finley, Jr. Surviving besides her husband are her children, Peggy Ann Sharp and her husband Dennis of Columbia, Md., James Lloyd Finley and his wife Betty of Dale City, Va., and Thomas Lee Finley of Manassas; granddaughter Lauren Elizabeth Sharp, attending Elon University in Elon, N.C.; and eight brothers and sisters, Frances Foushee, Ruth Conder, Peggy McGee, Mozelle Coggins, James Layne Jr., Billy Wade Layne, John Layne, and Jerry Layne., Ada wished to be remembered as she was. There will be no public viewing. Graveside services with military honors will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 at 11 a.m., with the Reverend Dr. Skip Ferguson officiating., In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Manassas Presbyterian Church, 8201 Ashton Avenue, Manassas, VA 20109. John Thomas Floyd Sr. for 48 years. She was born June 27, 1937, in Campbell County, a daughter of the late Lindsey and Beaulah Freeman Dews. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, an active volunteer with the Mt. Plain visitation team and involved in her ministry to God. In addition, Mrs. Floyd was the owner/operator of Floyd's Childcare Service. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, John Thomas Floyd Jr., and his wife, Terri, of Plano, Texas; three daughters, Daisy M. Floyd, of Fredricksburg, Cynthia F. Elbert, of Richmond, and Sharon E. Floyd, of Fredricksburg; three sisters, Lucy D. Rhodes, of Altavista, Mabel D. Cunningham, of Gladys, and Cleta D. Hill, of Altavista; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by nine brothers and five sisters. Charles Mertig II

Charles E. Mertig II SUFFOLK - Charles Edward Mertig II, 67, passed away peacefully at home Nov. 6, 2010 in Eclipse, Va. Charles, a native of Eclipse, graduated from Chuckatuck High School in 1961 and played on the varsity football team. Upon graduating high school, he began his career at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company where he was introduced to the love of his life and lifelong companion, Evlyn Hardy "Pat" Mertig, of Hampton. He took a position as an electrician at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1967 and retired in 1997 after 30 years of service. Having grown up on the water, that is where he loved spending much of his time cruising the rivers and fishing. He cherished spending time with his boys and had a special place in his heart for all of God's creatures. He was an active member of the Freemasons and Scottish Rite and was the Senior Warden of the Nansemond Lodge, he volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels and served on the Chuckatuck High School Reunion committee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Earl Mertig and Helen Briggs Mertig. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Pat; his two children, John Michael Mertig of Suffolk and Karl Edward Mertig and wife Stephanie of Virginia Beach; brother, Robert Lee Mertig and wife Rita of Richmond and nieces Karen Lee Mertig and husband John of Chicago and Kelley Ann Mertig and husband Mario of Richmond. A funeral will be conducted Nov. 10, Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer United Methodist Church by the Rev. Carl LeMon in Suffolk followed by a burial in Mount Zion Cemetery in Eclipse with Masonic Rites. She was born May 17, 1943, in Cedar Bluff, Va., to William Walter "Bill" and Dorothy Van Dyke "Dot" Wingo. She was a graduate of Richlands High School, Richlands, Va., Class of 1961 and an RN graduate of Johnston Memorial School of Nursing in Abingdon. She served as an RN at Johnston Memorial Hospital for over 37 years. She is survived by her husband, Jack C. Barrow of Abingdon; her daughter, Mary Barrow Murphy and husband, Joe of Nashville, Tenn.; her son, Jack Chesley Barrow II and his partner, Mark Livanec of Atlanta; her grandchildren: granddaughter, Lindsey Murphy Christenbury and husband, Aaron of Ft. Bragg, N.C., grandson, Sean Thomas Murphy of Nashville; and the cutest Great-grandbaby on the planet, Miss Brelyn "Bean" Christenbury also of Ft. Bragg. Darla is also survived by her sister, Dottie Lee Wingo of Roanoke, Va.; and her brother, William W. Wingo III and wife, Wanda Carver Wingo also of Roanoke. BURGER, Dorothy Claire, age 99, died on November 7, 2010, to join her husband of 72 years, Harry C. Burger. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Lewis J. and Margaret Gibbons; a brother, Lewis Gibbons Jr.; and a sister, Marguerite Gibbons. She is survived by her son, Paul M. Burger and his wife, Carroll, of Prairie Village, Kan.; her daughter, Diane E. Jones and her husband, William, of Mechanicsville, Va.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, Grammie, Oma and friend. She had many interests through the years: reading, bridge, travel and over 500 hours as a "Pink Lady" hospital volunteer. During her early married life, she was a model for several department stores. In later years, she was a volunteer docent at the Valentine Museum. She was active in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the auxiliary of The Little Sisters of the Poor. She and Harry enjoyed their later retirement years as owners of Harthea Miniatures, a specialty store near Ashland. Now they are together again forever. There will be a gathering of family and friends 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Bliley's-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Signal Hill Memorial Park. Dorothy and her husband, the late Lacy Coe, operated the Claypool Hill Skating Rink for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Samuel and Agnes Mitchell Puckett; her husband, Henry Lacy Coe; two brothers, Hoyt and Stanley "Clint" Puckett; two sisters, Catherine Addison and Louise Fain; a special nephew, Joseph Addison; and special niece, Sue Addison Compton. Edward Royall Sheffield passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Friday, November 5, 2010., Ed was born November 17, 1922, in Crewe, Virginia. He was a graduate of Crewe High School and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University., Ed went to work for the Bank of Crewe in 1946, beginning a banking career that spanned 40 years. He became the Executive Officer of the Bank of Crewe and served in that position until it was acquired by Virginia National Bank, now Bank of America, around 1966. Ed remained with Bank of America until retiring in 1985, serving the last 15 years as Regional Executive Officer for the Southwest Region of Virginia., Ed served as deacon, elder, trustee and church school teacher at Presbyterian churches in Crewe, Charlottesville and Abington, Virginia. He was also active in the Chamber of Commerce in Crewe and in Abingdon. He was an avid photographer, and leaves for his family a treasured photographic collection dating back over 50 years., Ed was predeceased by his parents, Frank W. and Eula H. Sheffield; a brother, Frank W. Sheffield Jr.; and sisters, Ann S. Hooper and Mary S. Gunn., He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sylvia Francis Sheffield of Crewe; three children, Susan S. Yowell and her husband, Stephen, of Crozet, Virginia, Nancy S. Peterson of Lafayette, Colorado, and Edward R. He was born in Creston, N.C., on May 8, 1925, to the late Freelean and Ollie Pennington Owens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Edwards and Verna Ham and her husband Raymond; brother, Howard Owens; and a son-in-law, Wiley Maze. Glen is survived by his wife, Jenell Owens; three daughters, Debarah Billings and husband Tommy, of Bristol Tennessee, Lois Maze of Mountain City, Tenn., and Wilma Woodard and husband Dewey, of Johnson City, Tenn.; two sons, Clyde Owens and wife Judy, of Mountain City, and Dean Whitt and wife Ginny, of Damascus, Va.; six sisters, Ruth Osborne and husband Ernest, of Creston, N.C., Louella Weaver and husband Ottis, of Mountain City, Mary Osborne and husband Dale, of Creston, North Carolina, Vinnie Perry of Creston, Jocee Odum and husband Lonnie, of Kingsport, Tenn., and Ann Tester, of Mountain City; brother, Jay Owens and wife Joann, of Creston; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Glennie Lail Cline SUFFOLK - Glennie Lail Cline, 97, died Nov. 6, 2010 at Maryview Nursing Center in Suffolk. Born in Hickory, N.C., she was a secretary and treasurer for G.L. Cline and Sons, and a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church. The family would like to thank the Maryview Nursing Center staff for all their kind wishes and gestures in taking care of Glennie. She was the daughter to the late Hattie Rosella Smith and Allison Monroe Lail and predeceased by her husband, Glenn L. Cline. Her survivors include four daughters, Wanda Taylor, Norma Warren and husband Howard, all of Portsmouth, Barbara Ryder and husband Robert of Richmond, and Gail Jackson and husband Arthur of Haymarket; son, Ronald K. (Buddy) Cline and wife Sara of Suffolk; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Lou Lail of Conover, N.C. Schools and Dora Mundie Schools; her brother, Earnest W. Schools; brothers-in-law, James Adams, Robert Lewis Carter, Jim Ferrell, Billy Ferrell and Sam Ferrell; and one sister-in-law, Virginia O. Ferrell. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Jerry O. Ferrell, as well as her two children, son, Jerry O. Ferrell Jr. "J-O" and his wife, Theresa P. Ferrell; daughter, Donna F. Faber and her husband, C.H. Faber; and four grandchildren, Jonathan Connor Pappas Ferrell, Morgan Taylor Faber, Christian Howard Faber and Christa Marie Ferrell; three sisters, Daisy S. Carter, Lilly S. Adams and Laura S. Elliott, and their families; and one sister-in-law, Elaine N. Schools, and her family. Myrtle worked at C&P Telephone Co. for ten years, and later in the children's department of Sears for 27 years. She was a member of Grove Avenue Baptist Church for 62 years where she sang in the choir for many years. Myrtle sang in the first live broadcast for Grove Avenue Baptist Church. Myrtle loved the Lord, her family, especially going to her grandchildren's special events, playing the piano and singing in the choir. The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grove Avenue Baptist Church, 8701 Ridge Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229. Marcia Caplan CHESAPEAKE - Marcia Caplan, 73, passed away Nov. 5, 2010. She was born in Rhode Island to the late Sara and David Halprin. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Lisa Caplan; son, Michael Caplan, and his wife Evelyn; granddaughter, Ashley Davis; grandsons, Dan and Tim Caplan; great-grandson, Stephen Woodis; brother, Ronnie Halprin; and sister, Paula Halprin. Marcia had a great passion for education, bargains, exercise and sweets. She was an elementary school teacher for many years; she taught third and fourth graders and loved most of it. She also loved to read and made every effort to visit the Chesapeake Public Library. She enjoyed exercising at the YMCA. She loved consignment shops and prided herself in finding great bargains. Cookies, chocolate ice cream, and Reese's peanut butter cups were particular favorites of hers. Marvin Aquilla Frisby, 63, took leave of this Earth on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, at 7 p.m. at his home in Petersburg, Va., surrounded by his loving family., He leaves his memory with two daughters, Marina Salek and Marisa Cadwallader, and one grandson, Christopher Salek. He was a loving son to Adolph Frisby and Junious Frisby-McPherson. As the oldest of three children, Marvin leaves behind his brother, Mario A. Frisby, and his baby sister, Carolyn Bellamy. He will surely be missed by his nieces and nephew, Marcus Frisby, Tra Frisby and Kalyn Frisby, and one great-nephew, Caymen Frisby. He also leaves to mourn his longtime friend, confidant, and companion, Linda Jones, and a host of family and friends across the country, mainly in Cleveland., He was preceded in death by his father, Adolph Frisby; stepfather, James McPherson; and a nephew, Tracy B. Frisby., Born in Boston, Marvin lived a colorful life in Philadelphia, Cleveland and Petersburg, Va., that spanned over six decades. He fell in love with the psychedelic '70s — an avid fan of Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin and Led Zeppelin. He traveled to several parts of the world and wed Mary Cavicchia in Toronto, Canada, in 1970. They raised their children in Hawaii and North Carolina. He enjoyed many hobbies such as cooking, bowling, fishing, gardening, classic westerns and sci-fi movies., His lifelong work was as an ASC diesel mMechanic, a trade he learned in the service. McNora Owens NORFOLK - McNora "Tina" Owens, 55, of the 3500 block of Kentucky Ave., went home to be with the Lord Nov. 3, 2010. A native of North Carolina, she moved to Norfolk at a young age and lived with her aunt, Gloria Bailey. She was educated in the Nash County, North Carolina and Norfolk Public School system and attended Norfolk State University. In 1980 McNora and Ronald entered into each others lives and they married in June 1986. From this union came one daughter, Jillian Marie. She retired from Sentara Health Systems in March 2010 after 35 years of service. She was a member of Second Calvary Baptist Church and served on the Usher Board No. 1. He was born in Campbell County on May 5, 1932, a son of the late Walter Clarence Coates and Ruth Farmer Coates. Ray was a member of Kedron Baptist Church, a collector of knives, a loyal and faithful supporter of the William Campbell High School Football program, enjoyed being outdoors and was a member of the first graduating class of William Campbell High School. He was a retired quality control inspector for B&W and a former employee of McDonnell-Douglas. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Walter "Wally" Clarence Coates II, and his wife, Missy, of Pfafftown, N.C.; a daughter, Ellen Coates Hendricks, and her husband, Mark, of Rustburg; two wonderful grandchildren, Rachel Coates and Tyler Hendricks; a sister, Mary "Trixie" Hughes, of Gladys; sisters-in-law, Naomi Coates, Nell Coates, Ginnie Woolsey and her husband, Tom, and Susan Voigt; brother-in-law, Bill Voigt; and many nieces and nephews. Three brothers, James, Allan and William "Dad" Coates and a sister, Peggy C. Miles, preceded him in death. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Spencer Wilkinson; his parents, Robert Winn and Lizzie Foizey Wilkinson, and his sister, Margaret Wilkinson Otter. He is survived by his brother, Douglas Wilkinson (Jacki), of Tallahassee, Fla.; and his sons, Robert A. Wilkinson Jr. (Mary Lee), of Chantilly, Spencer W. Wilkinson (Dorcas), of Marietta, Ga., and Thomas G. Wilkinson, of Mt. Arlington, N.J. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Robert Wilkinson III (Leah), William Wilkinson (Wendy), Spencer Wilkinson Jr., Andrea Wilkinson, Thomas Wilkinson Jr. (Alissa), Adam Wilkinson, Jessica Wilkinson Hierholzer (Bree) and Austin Wilkinson; and great-grandchildren, Robert Wilkinson IV and Katherine Wilkinson. Additionally, he is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Preston and Virginia Spencer, and sister-in-law, Mary Harvey Spencer, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Bob served in the Virginia Army National Guard, beginning in 1937, and later with the U.S. Army during WW II. After moving to Nelson County, he was a clerk and bookkeeper for Rucker-Payne Supply Company in Lovingston. He then served as Postmaster in Arrington (22922) for 27 years until his retirement in 1982. Following retirement from the Post Office, he worked part time for the Wells-Sheffield Funeral Chapel. Throughout his life in Arrington, he participated in many community service activities and was active in the Centenary and Nelson United Methodist Churches as a Lay Leader. He was a charter member of the Lions of Nelson and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest form of recognition by Lions International. For many years, he was active in the Nelson County High School Athletic Booster Club, and as a Scout Leader and Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America. Steven D. Fields NAGS HEAD - Steven D. Fields, 62, passed away Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010 at Outer Banks Hospital following his battle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Ruth A. Fields; a daughter, Angela Flora and her husband Monty of Stanardsville, Va.; and a son, Steven Fields II and his wife Nicole of Staunton, sVa.; four sisters, Peggy Beverly and husband Butch of Earlysville, Va., Donna Walker and companion Howard Goshart of Charlottesville, Va., Linda Fields of Stanardsville, Amy Siler and husband Melvin of Palmyra, Va.; four grandchildren, Dustin and Hunter Foster, Jessica Fields and Scott Ashby; nieces and nephews, Jennifer Jones, Wendy Shortridge, Wesley Walker, Amanda Lam, Kyle Siler and Lisa Fields. He leaves behind his "buddies" Ashley and Misty, his two dogs; and Sadie and Dora, his two cats. He was preceded in death by his father, Sidney Lee Fields; his mother, Edith Marie Walton; his stepfather Amos E. "Shorty" Walton; and his grandparents, Jessie and Leona Hixon. Steven attended Lane High School and graduated in 1967. He married the love of his life, Ruth, in 1968. He served in the U.S. Navy. After serving his country he became a Virginia State policeman, and later a City of Charlottesville policeman. His love of travel led him to become an over- the-road trucker until a few years ago when he worked for the Town of Kill Devil Hills. He retired in July due to his illness. From his service in the Navy, Steven always had a love for water and the Outer Banks which is where his family spent every summer vacation. In 2000 he and Ruth purchased their retirement home in Nags Head, N.C. The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Roger Lever; Darlene Jones, emergency department nurse; medical-surgical nurses, Trisha Robbins, Pam Fockler, Susan Longo and Heather Cobb. A special thanks to his wife's co-workers in Radiology Department at the Outer Banks Hospital. Susan Forrest Kirby WEST POINT - Susan Forrest Kirby, 62, died Oct. 28, 2010. Susan was predeceased by her parents, Clifford and Theodosia Kirby, and her brother, Jack T. Kirby. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Kirby Andrews "Betsy" and her husband Earl, and children, John, and his son Mark, Brian and his wife, Esther and Karen Andrews, and her children Emily and William Quinn; also, Jack's children, Valerie, and her husband Mark and their children, Ella and Sophie, and Matthew Kirby. Susan was a graduate of James Madison University and received a master's degree in library science at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. She served as a librarian in Southampton County Schools for 28 years. She was instrumental in setting up computer-supported reading programs that greatly enhanced the reading levels for many students. Her brother, Jack Kirby, was professor emeritus at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, published nine books and numerous articles concerning Southern history and the economic and environmental changes in the South since the Civil War. Susan often helped him, and others, in doing local research. She was also very active in her church, Dorminition Orthodox Church, and assisted in developing a library of Christian church history. Thelma Lois Clark Browning, 90, Hopewell, Va., passed away on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at Riverview Nursing Home., She was preceded in death by her parents, John Denton and Eva Viola Clark; her husband, Denzil Browning; brothers, Alvie, Charles, Dee and Lawrence Clark, all of Oklahoma; sisters, Bertha Stotzel of California and Jewell Vice of Oklahoma. Thelma was a homemaker who traveled with her family though the military from coast to coast. For several years she worked as assistant manager for Mills Fabric in Hopewell, where she did something she really loved. She was a talented craftsman of all needle crafts., Thelma is survived by her daughter, Patricia Wilson and husband, Danny, of Hopewell; three sons, John Browning of Petersburg, James and Robert Browning, both of Hopewell. She has six grandchildren, Kimberly Peppers, Michelle Colley, Brian Wilson, Jay Wilson, Rebecca Stokoe and Stephanie Shepherd. She has 12 great-grandchildren, and many loved nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth Russell of Oakland, Calif.; a brother, Jessie Clark of Glenpool, Okla.; two sisters-in-law, Ruey Clark of Portalis, N.M., and Josie Henzi of Burlington, N.C. She leaves a dear friend and neighbor, Hilda Bell., The family will receive friends at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 9, 2010. On Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, our heavenly father called home his beloved son, Wayne Jerome Winfield, age 56, at Southside Regional Medical Center, from a declining illness., Jerome was born April 5, 1954, in Dinwiddie County, to Herbert Winfield and the late Alberta Winfield Parham. At an early age, he gave his life to Christ at the Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church in Carson, Va. He was a graduate of Dinwiddie High School, Dinwiddie, Va. He served six years in the Army, was a former employee of Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Sutherland, Va., for five years and worked at Sealeze Inc. until his health declined., Jerome was preceded in death by his mother, Alberta Winfield Parham (Vernie "Pop-Pop"); foster mother, Mary "Micky" Brown; and his son, Randy Sample., Jerome leaves to cherish his memory, his father, Herbert Winfield of Prince George, Va.; his loving and devoted wife, Rose Marie Winfield of Petersburg, Va.; three daughters, Shaunta Sample of Hopewell, Va., Felicia Davis of Petersburg, Va., and a devoted daughter and best friend, Tosaunda Sample (Shequita) of Petersburg, Va.; one stepson, Thaddeus Taylor of Petersburg, Va.; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson; mother-in-law, Fairy Holmes of Petersburg, Va.; seven brothers, Calvin Parham of Richmond, Va., Darrell Brown (Julia) and Melvin Parham (Adrienne), both of Chester, Va., Gilbert Parham (Tricia) of Chesterfield, Va., Milton Winfield (Terri) and Vernie Parham Jr. (Angie), both of Philadelphia, and William Brown (Linda) of Prince George, Va.; four sisters-in-law, Terraine Edney (Michael) of Chesterfield, Va., Cartina Kudjoe (Kenneth) of Hopewell, Va., Leona Allen (William) and Pearl Avery (William), both of Petersburg, Va.; five uncles, William Beasley (Glenn) of Prince George, Va., Norman Brown (Della), Roger Noggin (Lucille) and John Noggin (Theresa), all of Petersburg, Va., and Edward Winfield of Hudson, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, among them, devoted friends, David Sample, John Ampy "DJ Ampro" and Janice Allen, all of Petersburg, Va., Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church of God in Christ, Petersburg. The Rev. Jeffrey L. Dodson Sr. is the pastor. The eulogy will be given by the Rev. Merley Keene. Interment will be in Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk., The remains will lie in repose at the church on Wednesday from 10:45 a.m. until the hour of service. COX, Wayne P. Sr., 63, of Sandston, passed away Friday, November 5, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lucy L. Cox; sons, Wayne P. Cox Jr. and wife, Stacy, and Keith P. Bray; devoted father of Kristen Rock, Karen Stanton and Jesse Thomas Matthews III.; son of Alzira C. Pruitt and the late Rev. Richard Thomas Bray Jr.; brother of Thomas C. Bray and Dianne B. Grimsley; and survived by nine grandchildren; three great- grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was a funeral director for over 34 years in the Northern Virginia area.
