Brown, Mae A.

Mrs. Mae Ann Brown was born in Darlington, S.C., on Feb. 24, 1954, to the late Ollie and Eva Mae Damon. On July 4, 2009, God sent his Angel to Johnston Willis Hospital, Richmond, Va., to carry his child home. Ann received her formal education through Darlington County Public Schools. Upon her graduating from Mayo High School, Ann joined the United States Army, which she served for 22 years before retiring in 1994 as sergeant major. While in the United States Army, Ann achieved several accomplishments for her work. Some of her most cherished accomplishments were being the first black female soldier to hold a first sergeant position and sergeant major position at Fort Lee. After retiring, she was employed at the Virginia Department of Child Support Enforcement and the Virginia Department of Veteran's Services. At an early age she was baptized and joined Union Baptist Church in Darlington, S.C. Years later she continued to serve the Lord at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of which she was a dedicated member and served on the Building Fund Committee and as a trustee. Ann was loved and respected by many. She leaves behind to cherish her memories, her loving and devoted husband of 28 years, Terry Brown of Prince George, Va.; two daughters, Cinnamon Brown of Prince George, Va., and Erica Pinkney-Ayot(Rafael) of Chesapeake, Va.; two brothers, Lee Ollie Damon of Charlotte, N.C., and Edward Damon (Elaine) of Darlington, S.C.; two sisters, Roina Love of Charlotte, N.C., and Magdalene Damon-Brown of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers-in-law, Melvin Brown of Norfolk, Va., and Rodger Brown (Cynthia) of Chesapeake, Va.; a sister-in-law, Hameeda Brown-Stewart (Samuel) of Mt. Rainier, Md.; three grandchildren, Kayla Turner of Prince George, Va., Emani Pinkney and JaQuan Ayot, both of Chesapeake, Va.; special friends, David and Jackie Brown of Chester, Va., Ollie Booker of Chester, Va., Elizabeth Ann Pettis of Prince George, Va., Edward and Wanda Davis of Prince George, Va., John and Linda Jones of Prince George, Va., and Reginald and Janie Williams of Prince George, Va.; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and many more special friends. Lillian V. Carson NORFOLK - Lillian Vlasis "Lily" Carson passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2009, in a local hospital. Born in Manhattan, New York City, she was the daughter of the late Jefferies Vlasis of Greece and Ida Keller Vlasis of Switzerland. She was the widow of Edward G. Carson, a landscape architect and an artist. She loved life and all that God has put before us and made the most of that in every way that was possible. Lily was educated in music, languages, and early childhood education at Hunter College in New York City and at Old Dominion University. Mrs. Carson was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Tidewater Music Teacher Forum, Music Teacher's National Association, National Guild of Music Teachers, Virginia Symphony, Norfolk Society of Arts, Hellenic Women's Club and the Ghent Garden Club. As a teacher for more than 40 years, she taught kindergarten for 15 years and gave private piano lessons for more than 44 years. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Richard B. Franklin and his wife Kathleen of Midlothian, Va., James Franklin of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Jeffrey J. Franklin and his wife Dorinda of Norfolk; her stepchildren, Becky and Jacques Gagne of Blue Hill, Maine, Tracy and Patty Carson of Portland, Maine, Cindy and Bruce Paxon of Gratis, Ohio, and Kathleen Carson and Susan Long of Belfast, Maine; a brother, John Vlasis and his wife Yolanda of Charlottesville, Va.; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father Daniel Klem. A Christian wake will be conducted Friday at 7 p.m. in the H.D. Larry Lewis Dillon Sr. CHESAPEAKE - Larry Lewis Dillon Sr., 69, of the 1100 block of Bethel Road, went to be with the Lord July 6, 2009, in Chesapeake. A native of South Norfolk, he was the son of the late Roland Lee Dillon Sr. and Sallie Brothers Dillon. He was a member of South Norfolk Presbyterian Church and retired as a park caretaker from the Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Department. He is survived by his wife, Martha Dillon; a daughter, Pamela Lynn Dillon-Kelly and her husband Chuck Kelly; two sons, Larry L. Dillon Jr. and his girlfriend Nikki, all of Chesapeake and Christopher P. Dillon of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Kristen Michelle Dillon and Cody Dillon Kelly; a future grandson, Cole Blaine Larry Dillon; five sisters, Peggy Williams, Margaret Woods, Billie Leigh, Naomi Pearce and Ruth Pierce; a brother, Roland "Bud" Dillon Jr.; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dogs, Petey, Chloe, Sydney and Buster. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Margie Topping, Virginia Nelson and Roma Faye Dillon and a brother, Ray Chapman Dillon. Franke Jr., Walter Royden

Dr. Walter Royden (Topper) Franke Jr., 67, was born in Charlottesville, Va., on June 21, 1942, and moved to Galax, Va., at the age of four. He lived with his mother, Kathryn L. Franke, and his grandparents, Floyd and Lola Landreth, on Virginia Street until he left for Virginia Military Institute in 1960. Topper transferred to Lynchburg College and graduated in 1964 with a B. S. degree in math and religion. In 1964 to 1966 he attended Brite Divinity School in Ft. Worth, Texas. From 1966 to 1969, Topper and his wife, Beezy, were missionaries in the Congo, Zaire. Topper served as a bush pilot for Disciples of Christ Christian Church. From 1969 to 1971, Topper resumed his education at Brite Divinity School and received his B.D. degree and from 1971 to 1973 he continued at Brite to receive his D.M., Topper served as Minister of Education at First Christian Church in Carrollton, Texas, as Minister at Pecan Springs Christian Church in Austin, Texas, and from 1978 to 1986 he served as Senior Pastor at First Christian Church in Salem, Va. Topper then became Associate Regional Minister in the Area Office in Roanoke. In 1991, Topper joined his alma mater, Lynchburg College, as the Vice President of External Affairs., Throughout his life, Topper served the community as well as the church in many capacities in his years as a minister, an advisor, and as a friend. He also served on the Salem City School Board, Lynchburg College Board of Trustee, and various other boards and community organizations., Topper Franke passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2009. He is survived by his wife, Bernice (Beezy) Franke, of Salem: daughters and sons-in-laws, Krystin and Andrew Mann, of Turks and Caicos Island, British West Indies, and Katie B. and Chris Faussenmagne, of Atlanta, Ga. Topper is survived and will be missed by his three grandchildren, Grace and Kate Mann and John Faussenmagne. Martha Susan Waller Hatchett, "Susie," 65, devoted mother and teacher, of Disputanta, passed away Monday, July 6, 2009. She was a native of Petersburg, born the daughter of Alice Dewell Waller, "Shiney," and the late Manning Franklin Waller. Mrs. Hatchett was a school teacher for over 30 years and mainly taught Latin and English. Throughout her career she taught at several schools including Prince George High School, Sussex Central High School, Gibbons/St. Vincent DePaul High School and Thomas Dale High School. After retiring, she couldn't give up her love for the classroom and began substitute teaching at Clements Junior High in Prince George. She was the widow of Joseph William Hatchett and is survived by her daughter, Lisa H. Mullins and husband, Chris; grandchildren, Matthew Blake Mullins and Samuel Austin Mullins; cousins, Gloria Morris, David Dewell, Anita Deligan, Dan Carrington; and numerous other loving friends. Clarence Love CHESAPEAKE - Clarence Alton Love, 83, passed away July 7, 2009, in Chesapeake. He was born Sept. 9, 1925, in Goldston, N.C. He moved from Sanford, N.C., to South Norfolk in 1935, and then to Princess Anne County in 1946. He was the son of the late Mittie Yow Love and George Dobb Love. He was predeceased by his wife, Hattie Woodhouse Stone Love. He is survived by his daughter, Ellen Christine Lancrain and husband Donald R. Lancrain Jr. of Virginia Beach; a brother, Eugene "Pete" Love of Norfolk; two sisters-in-law, Kate S. Jennette of Virginia Beach and Betty C. Stone of Danville, Va.; a brother-in-law, Ray C. Johnson of Nordland, Wash.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Mr. Love attended South Norfolk High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in the European Theatre. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 24 years. He was a member of Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church. A funeral will be held Saturday, July 11, at 2 p.m. in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Jean Anthony Metosh, 82, of Colonial Heights, died Monday, July 6, 2009, at his residence. He was the son of the late Cyril Daniel and Lois Jones Metosh. He was preceded in death by a son, Barry Neil Metosh; a brother, Col. Patrick Metosh; three sisters, Gloria M. Harris, Mary M. Parker and Paula M. DeMary. Mr. Metosh was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Petersburg. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II on the LST964 as a radioman third class. He worked for 17 years with Allied Chemical, and retired as a maintenance supervisor for the Petersburg Water Treatment Plant. Mr. Metosh was an avid Nascar fan, and #1 fan of grandsons Chris, #43, and Shawn, #84, at Southside Speedway, Richmond, Va. Samuel Leroy (Sammy) Myers Sr., 72, of Troutville, Va., passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2009. He was born on May 23, 1937, in Fincastle, Va., to Sam B. and Nelda Williams Myers. Sammy met the love of his life, Virginia Tucker, and they joined hands in marriage on December 7, 1968, in Cloverdale. He served our country in the United States Army from February 4, 1955, to December 24, 1959. After the Army, Sammy went to Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center for nurse training and completed his course on July 10, 1964. Then he went to work for the Pepsi Company for 25 years and took an early retirement due to back problems. Sammy lived a hard suffering life and God took him home to be with him where he will not suffer or be in pain anymore. Sammy you will be missed dearly by your family. We Love You Dad. Mr. Morris Q. Spratley, 22, of 1068 Sixth St., Petersburg departed this life Friday, July 3, 2009, in the Medical College of Virginia. He was born in Petersburg on April 25, 1987, to Morris D. Carson and Charlene Renee Spratley. Morris attended Petersburg Public Schools and was employed as a production worker. He was an active and dedicated member of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church. Morris was preceded in death by his two grandmothers, Mary Spratley and Mary Carson, and his uncle, Jimmy Green, "Bubble." He leaves to cherish his memories: his mother, Charlene Renee Spratley of Petersburg; his father, Morris D. Jul 8, 2009 The funeral for Tamartha Anissia Williams, 33, of Martinsville, who died July 5, 2009, at Morehead Memorial Hospital, Eden, N.C., will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Refuge Temple Holiness Church. The Rev. Joseph Neal will officiate. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour before the service Friday. She was born in Martinsville on May 7, 1976, to Winston Laray Williams Sr. and Ada Earlene Kent Williams. She was a CNA at Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville and worked at Sears Department Store. She was a member of New Design Baptist Church, where she had sung in the choir. She was preceded in death by grandparents Earl R. and Mavis V. Kent. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are two daughters, Brittany M. Williams of Greensboro, N.C., and Tre'Veona A. Gravely of the home; a son, ShaQuan D. Williams of the home; three brothers, Winston L. Williams Jr. of Bennettsville, S.C., and R. Demetrius Kent and Cory L. She had a tremendous passion and love for horses and riding fourwheelers. She was a child that never met a stranger and she always wore a smile. Born in Bacon's Castle, Surry County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Waverly James and Mary Elizabeth Marable Bell. Margaret was a longtime member of the Smithfield Woman's Club, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Isle of Wight Historical Society. She was also a member of Smithfield Baptist Church. Mrs. Woodard leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Ellen W. Jones of Johnson City, Tenn.; her sons, Michael C. Woodard and Brian R. Woodard, both of Smithfield; grandchildren, Kathy Robinson, Kelly and Mary Ellen Jones; and great-grandchildren, Rachel and Makinzi.
