Linda M. Bagnato, 58, died Friday July 3, 2009 at her home in Bristol. She was born in Pittsburgh, Penn., to the late Dominick Bagnato and Rita Boyce Bagnato. She graduated from Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. She received a masters degree in music from NYU and received her law degree from Temple University. She taught at Virginia Highlands Community College Equestrian Program and had volunteered with the Washington County Sheriff's Department. Survivors include one daughter, Carly A. Lipput, Pittsburgh, Penn.; one son, Alex D. Lipput, Pittsburgh, Penn.; brothers and sisters, Christine White, Orlando, Fla., Frank Bagnato, Pittsburgh, Penn., Robert Bagnato, Reno, Nev., Anthony Bagnato, Pittsburgh, Penn., James Bagnato, Denver, Colo.; and nieces and nephews. Bland Jr., James V.

James Vernard Bland Jr., 84, of Chesterfield, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at the Hospice unit of McGuire V.A. Medical Center. He was the son of the late James Vernard Bland Sr. and Susie Whitley Bland, and was preceded in death by a son, John W. Bland, and two sisters, Lula Wade and Anna Jordan. Mr. Bland was a U.S. Marine veteran having served during World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a member of Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church, a life member of the D.A.V., and founded the Boy Scouts of America Troop #178 at Ivey Memorial UMC in 1959. Jim was a retired employee of Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Homes and a local musician for many years with several country, dance and gospel groups. He is survived by his wife, June Jefferson Bland; two sons, James V. Bland III and wife, Sue, of Richmond, and Jeff A. Bland and wife, Cindy, of Richmond; two daughters, Linda S. Staton and husband, E. Gordon, of Chester, and Sharon B. Heiberg of Richmond; two grandsons; six granddaughters; one great-grandson. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, in Ivey United Methodist Church, 17120 Jefferson Davis Highway, Colonial Heights, with the Rev. Tommy Herndon officiating. Earhart, James Crockett

was spent in the Pacific Theater, including Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. Upon his return home, he became an over the road truck driver, eventually retiring from Associated Transport. With the feel of the road still in him, he drove again briefly for Jones Transfer and Smith Transfer and finally as a bus driver for Bedford County schools. Along the way, Jay and Elmyra opened their home for her dad, his mother and two nieces to live for a period of time., He was a member of VFW Post #4522, American Legion Post #0080, and Teamsters Local 171. He was a member of Midland Baptist Church and was a faithful member until his health prevented him from attending. He held several positions at Midland, including Superintendent of Sunday School, Deacon, Chairman of Deacons and Treasurer., In addition to his parents, Jay was preceded in death by his faithful and loving wife, Elmyra in 1998; and an infant grandson., Jay is survived by his daughters, Janet Amos, of Roanoke, his caregiver since October, 2008, Carol (Penny) Earhart, of Salem, and Tina S. Earhart, of Affton, Mo.; granddaughters, Jackie P. Francis Rush French, of Roanoke, Va., passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, June 18, 2009. The Good Lord called him home as he had fulfilled his role as protector and provider for 84 years and his job was completed. He was born March 9, 1925, in Clintwood, Va. He is survived by his three children, Charles R. French, of Roanoke, Va., Gregory W. French and wife, Patricia, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and his daughter, Terrie A. French, of Roanoke, Va.; a brother, David French, of Huntsville, Ala.; and a sister, Catherine French Stookey, of Wood River, Ill. His surviving immediate family also includes two grandsons, Ryan B. French and Evan R. French, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and a dear friend and helper, Susan N. Connor, of Rocky Mount, Va. Francis was preceded in death in March 2009 by his wife of 55 years, Violet W. French; his parents, G. Mark French, Esq. and Bessie Rush French, of Clintwood, Va.; brothers, G. Mark French Jr., Charles G. French, of Cheverly, Md., and Calvin French, of Nacogdoches, Texas; and sister, Florence A. French, of Clintwood, Va., Francis grew up in Clintwood, Va., where he learned many practical skills related to farming and coal mining. He often spoke of how tough it was growing-up during the Great Depression as it forever left a cautious mark upon him. During his adolescent summers, he and his brothers would spend their days working on one of his father's farms or driving timber or coal trucks carrying wood or coal from one of his father's properties. He graduated from Clintwood High School in 1941 having played on the school's varsity football and baseball teams. In 1943 he volunteered for the United States Navy and he trained at the amphibious training base at Little Creek, Va., after which he was deployed to the Pacific Theatre to participate in the fight against the Japanese Army and Navy. Francis' amphibious landing ship participated in the effort to re-capture the Pacific Islands and saw military action at Okinawa and Hiroshima as well as stops at Pearl Harbor, Manila Bay, Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands., After the end of World War II, Francis attended college at the Norfolk Division of William & Mary College, now known as Old Dominion University, for two years before transferring to Concord College in Bluefield, W.Va., where he graduated with a B.A. in business administration in 1950. While at Concord College, he met his future wife, Violet F. Ward, whom he married in 1952. They briefly lived in Radford, Va., before moving to Salem, Va., where he worked for General Electric Corporation for 31 years. He was a strong supporter of the local Andrew Lewis High School sports programs as well as the University of Virginia where two of his children graduated. After retiring from General Electric, Francis enjoyed gardening and playing with the family dogs at his 12 acre "retirement" home in Roanoke County., will be held 7 p.m. that evening to celebrate his life and accomplishments. James G. Gillespie, 85, of Christiansburg, Va., passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2009. He was preceded in death by brothers, Garfield Gillespie and Harold Gillespie; sisters, Joyce Bowen, Phyllis Meredith, and Janet Meredith; daughter, Sandra G. Johnson; and granddaughter, Sarah Colley. He was born on June 2, 1924, in Ada, W.Va., to the late William Jennings and Bertie Pennington Gillespie. He joined the United States Navy in December of 1941 where he served as a Coxswain-Boatsman on LCT for troop movements in the Asiatic and Pacific Theatres. He served in New Guinea, Okinawa, Sipan, and Japan during World War II., After his discharge from the Navy in 1945, he met and married Betty Zane Hodges from Thornhill, W.Va. After briefly living in Longview, Wash., they eventually settled in Christiansburg, Va., where Jim was employed with Radford Army Ammunitions Plant until his retirement in 1975., He is survived by his wife, Betty Zane Hodges Gillespie; four daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Alvie Cullop, of Roanoke, Va., Debbie and Stanley Coley, of Christiansburg, Va., Sue and Walter Baumoel, of Roanoke, Va., and Cecile and Brian Beverage, of Troutville, Va.; 10 grandchildren, Brian Cullop, Zac Cullop, Christy Wallace, Stacey Crowder, Phaydra Epperly, Travis Colley, Aaron, Lindsey, and Abby Baumoel, and Austin Beverage; 11 greatgrandchildren, Kara and Lacee Cullop, Andrew Cullop, Alexa Smith, Ashton Crowder, Danielle Keesee, Kayla and Maggie Criner, Eli and Abby Wallace, and Tripp Cullop; one great-great-grandson, Mason Cullop; brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Bonnie Gillespie, of Radford, Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Freda and Travis Quesenberry, of Gulfport, Miss.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mitzi and Clyde East, of McDowell, W.Va.; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends., Jim loved life and lived it to the fullest. He never met a stranger. He will be remembered by his humor and pranks. He loved his family and friends, especially all his camping buddies. His greatest concern was that no one ever went hungry. Joseph Stras Gillespie Jr., 76, of Severna Park, Md., died on June 29, 2009 at home, from complications of Parkinson's Disease. He was born on Feb. 20, 1933 in Tazewell, Va. Mr. Gillespie graduated from Hampden-Sydney College and attended University of Virginia for Graduate School. He served as an aviator in the US Navy. Mr. Gillespie worked for the C & P Telephone Company and was a longtime Coach in Anne Arundel County. He coached for Junior Varsity Girl's Basketball, Girl's Softball and Boy's Baseball. He also coached AAU basketball and coached teams for the Greater Severna Park Athletic Association Green Hornets where he served on the board of directors. The GSPAA named a playing field for Mr. Gillespie at Kinder Park. He was a member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park. He enjoyed sports, the symphony, theatre, traveling and being with his family. Mr. Gillespie is survived by his wife Gale Branch Gillespie, a son James Selwyn Gillespie of Charlottesville, Va., and daughters Ellen G. Oakes and Emily G. Clement, both of Severna Park. He was also the grandfather of Dustin, Joe, and Elyse Purdy, Rachel, Rebecca, Olivia, and Gabe Clement, Ethnie, Will, and Sam Gillespie, and Jeannette, Austin and Trevor Oakes. Sherry Wininger Hawthorne, 57, of Rural Retreat died Friday, July 3, 2009. Funeral service was held Monday, July 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Revs. Tom Ballard and Don Stansell officiating. Interment was in West End Cemetery. She was born Dec. 3, 1951, in Kingsport, Tenn. Raised in Scott County, she was a graduate of Virginia Tech and North Carolina State University, holding a bachelor of arts degree and a master of arts degree in English. She was employed for nearly 15 years as an editor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Upon moving to Wythe County, she worked for several years under contract with Johns-Hopkins University Press editing scientific books for authors worldwide. She volunteered for many years for Wythe County Habitat for Humanity, United Way of Wythe County and the Wythe County Genealogical and Historical Assoc. She was a regular appointee to the Wythe County Planning Commission. An active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville, she taught children's Sunday school there for over a decade and was serving as chairman of the Missions Committee. She was preceded in death by her mother, Hester Hartgrove Wininger. Survivors include her husband of over 35 years, Alan Hawthorne of Rural Retreat; a beloved daughter, Susannah Hawthorne of Virginia Beach; father and stepmother, N.W. and Bea Wininger of Scott County; two sisters and brothers-in-law, twin sister Terry Wininger and Eddie Wininger of Scott County, Barbara and Chip Coalter of Lexington; four loving nieces, Cindy Moratto, Rebecca Starnes, April Wininger and Aaron Mazuelos; two grandnieces, Katie Starnes and Lindsay Starnes; many dear cousins, particularly Nancy Alley, Linda McGee, Jama Mason, Joy Chapman, Anita McClain and Michelle McDavid; and many dear members of her husband's family. Mr. Joe Morgan Honaker, age 88, of Cedar Bluff, Va., passed away Sun., July 5, 2009 in a Richlands, Va., hospital. He was born in Buchanan County and was the son of the late Ezra and Maggie Looney Honaker. He had made his home in the Jewell Ridge and Cedar Bluff area all of his life and was a retired miner from the Richardson Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA Local #7327 Jewell Valley, Va., and was an avid gardener and enjoyed working outside in his yard. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Honaker; three sisters, Trulie Surman, Dolly Clements, and Emma Payne; and one grandson, Barry Fletcher. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors are: two daughters: Helen Fletcher and husband, Fred, of Richlands, Va., Kathleen Craig and husband, Bill, of Roanoke, Va.; two grandchildren: Mike Baldwin and Kim Burks and husband, Nick; three great grandchildren: Maegan Brown and husband, Timmy, Joey Fletcher and Christi Burks; one granddaughter-in-law: Kathleen Fletcher; special companion, his loving dog: Peanut; several nieces and nephews also survive. Frances Halbert Russell, 94, of Winchester, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, in a local nursing facility. She was born in 1915 in Staunton, the daughter of the late Colonel Ted G. and Massie Russell. She was a retired chemistry professor with Shenandoah University, Winchester, and formerly with Marion College and Roanoke College. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Winchester Women's Civic League, Winchester Stamp Club and Winchester Pilot Club. She was a graduate of Mary Baldwin receiving a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, and the University of North Carolina where she received a Masters Degree. Survivors include her niece, Rusty Dodd, and her husband, Richard, of Star Tannery. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Boyd Chapel, with the Rev. Diana R. Shiflett VIRGINIA BEACH - Diana Randall Shiflett passed away July 6, 2009, in Virginia Beach. Born and raised in New Zealand, Diana spent her teen years in Southern California, where she graduated in 1976 from Santa Monica High School. In 1982, she met her husband, the late Stephen Thomas Shiflett of Richmond, Va., with whom she had four children, who excelled due to her unyielding support and guidance. Diana was passionate about art and returned to school to acquire her art degree from California State University Northridge in 1994. Diana moved to Virginia Beach in 2005 and spent the last years of her life teaching her beloved students at Birdneck Elementary School. Diana was predeceased by her sister, Caroline Randall formerly of New Zealand. She is survived by her father, Michael Randall of New Zealand; mother, Maureen Randall of Iowa; daughters, Nicole of San Francisco, Brett and Kylie; and son, Dylan, all of Virginia Beach; sister, Catherine Randall of Tampa, Fla.; and two nephews and four nieces. Robert Stevens Tatum, 56, of Colonial Heights, Va., passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, after a valiant battle with cancer. Steve was born on Jan. 13, 1953, the loving son of Robert Walton and Marguerite White Tatum of Colonial Heights. Also surviving him is his cherished wife of 20 years, Susan Hudson Tatum. Steve was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing, boating and his place at the lake. He had a successful business of home repairs and remodeling with his good friend and business partner, Butch William,s and later with his father, Robert W. Tatum. Steve thoroughly enjoyed his work as building inspector for the City of Colonial Heights, where he worked until his medical retirement in 2006. During his illness Steve stayed active with his research in genealogy. Through this work he became a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Sons of the American Revolution, under many different ancestors. Surviving family members in addition to his parents and wife are his two daughters by his first marriage, Jennifer T. Stalls and husband, Will, and Megan T. Cannon and husband, John; three granddaughters; a brother, Mark A. Tatum and wife, Patricia: a sister, Karen T. Valente and husband, Anthony; three nephews. Additional surviving family members are sisters-in-law, Sandra H. Browder (Gerald) and Carol H. Price (Len); three nieces; one nephew; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Mrs. Patricia Annette Thomas, 56, of Palm Coast, Fla., entered into eternal peace Monday, July 6, 2009. A native of Petersburg, Va., she was the loving daughter of the late Reba Dyson Atkins and the stepdaughter of the late Mr. Wyatt Atkins. Mrs. Patricia Thomas graduated from Petersburg High School in 1971, and attended Virginia Commonwealth University and later received a degree in psychology in 1986. She was formerly employed with the Internal Revenue Service, and recently employed by the Small Business Administration of the federal government. At the tender age of 12, Patricia received Christ at Gillfield Baptist Church in Petersburg, Va. She became a faithful and tireless advocate for the Million Mom March after losing her first born to violent gunfire. She diligently worked with millions of moms across the nation to encourage Congress to enforce sensible guns law, and lobby against gun manufacturers. She served her country in the United States Army, and was honorably discharged in 1980. She is predeceased by her parents, Wyatt and Reba Atkins, and her son, Mr. Harrington Jerome McBride. Fletcher Dyson of Augusta, Ga., and Mr. Frank Dyson (Marlene) of Toronto, Canada; two aunts, Ms. Vivian Robertson and Margaret Dyson of New York City, New York; and Auntie Momma, Ms. Rose Edmunds of Petersburg, Va.; and a host of and nieces and nephews. A homegoing celebration will be held at noon on Monday, July 13, 2009, at the St. John Baptist Church, Stony Creek, with the Rev. Linda Skipper, associate minister, officiating. Thompson, Elsie Hutton

Elsie Hutton Thompson, 88, died on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 in Francis Marion Manor in Marion. She was born in Smyth County to the late George Hutton and Mary Alice Carroll Hutton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Craig Roulo, two brothers, George and James Carvin Hutton, and a sister, Mae Hutton. She was a member of Lowman Valley Church and had been employed at Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute for 16 years. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Survivors include one daughter, Shelby Roulo and husband, Craig, of Marion; her grandchildren, Chastity, Steven, Tina and Bobby; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends. Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Steve Hutton officiating. Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of Lowman Valley Church. The family received friends Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A graveside service was conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday at Rose Lawn Cemetery. He was born Nov. 21, 1938, in Wythe County, son of the late Helen S. Walls. He was a member of IVA Lodge 173 Independent Order of Odd Fellows and retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Cecelia A. Watts CHESAPEAKE - Cecelia A. Watts died July 7, 2009. Born in Newport, R.I., Jan. 16, 1924, she was daughter of the late Manuel S. and Angelina L. Marks. She was married in 1942 to Paul V. Watts Sr., who made the Navy his career. He retired as master chief and made their home in Chesapeake for 48 years. She worked at GE and various nurseries, loving anything pertaining to horticulture. Her other hobbies included egg art, sewing, painting and gardening. She leaves a son, Paul V. Watts Jr.; two grandsons, Ronald Chandler of Arizona and Michael Chandler of Pennsylvania; and six great-grandchildren. Cecelia was predeceased by her brothers, August and Raymond formerly of Middletown, R.I., Lester formerly of California; and her sister, Louise Faria formerly of Portsmouth. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Lees of Portsmouth, R.I.; 10 nieces and one nephew. Gaines Edward Webb, age 62 of Raven, Va., passed away Fri., July 3, 2009 at a local Richlands area hospital. He was born in Raven, Va., and was the son of Lucy Whitt Webb and the late Shannon Montague Webb. Gaines was a graduate from Richlands High School Class of 1966 and served in the U.S. Army and had worked for the Appalachian Electric Power Company as a lineman supervisor. He had lived in the Raven area most of his life other than the 20 years he lived in Huntington, W.Va., and he was a member of the American Legion. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Amber Marie Blankenship. Those who survive him are: his mother, Lucy Whitt Webb of Raven, Va.; his daughters: Lora Gaye Blankenship and husband Tim of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Tracy Lynn Webb of Raleigh, N.C.; his sisters: Brenda Davis and husband Johnny of Raven, Va., Monica Richardson and husband Ronnie of Sharpsburg, Ga.; one brother, Garnett Webb and wife Martha of Bluefield, Va.; grandchildren, Salvatore Vicere, Ashlie, Alyssa and T.J. Blankenship. Funeral services for Gaines Webb will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wed., July 8, 2009 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va., with the Rev. Dennis White and Rev. Kegan S. Yezdanian Jr. HERTFORD - Kegan Sarkis Yezdanian Jr., 68, of the 100 block of Soundside Drive, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, in Albermarle Hospital. Mr. Yezdanian was the son of the late Helen and Kegan Yezdanian Sr. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, Durants Neck Volunteer Fire Dept., the Fraternal Order of the Police and he served our country as a member of the U.S. Air Force. Survivors include his wife, Ethel Joan Yezdanian; two sons, Richard A. Yezdanian and wife Dawn of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., and Keith Z. Yezdanian and wife Jolene of Elizabeth City; and two grandchildren, Jessika and Heather. Mr. Yezdanian was preceded in death by his sister, Lucy Kehayian.
