He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Kay Aldridge; and brother, Kenny Marshall Aldridge. He is survived by daughter, Cassie Aldridge; son, Donald G. from the Amphibious Base Fire Department, Little Creek, Virginia, and owner of the Jamaica Inn Restaurant for more than 40 years. Roy's hobbies were bingo, pool playing, and poker but his favorite was hanging out with his grandkids. Roy was married to a beautiful woman, Gloria R. Annis, for more than 50 years and is survived by his two daughters, Michele M. Roth and her husband Dennis and Tina M. Croy; his son, Mark C. Annis; six grandchildren, Joe Kucinski, Rick Kucinski, Kathy Burgess, Shane Anthony, Cody Croy and Dillon Annis; and three great-grandchildren, Shawn Kucinski, Kamron Burgess and "the apple of his eye," Isabella Burgess. Brown, Howard A.

Mr. Howard A. Brown, 81, of 28946 Sussex Drive, Waverly, departed this life Monday, July 6, 2009, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. He was a native of Surry County, but spent the remainder of his youth growing up in Waverly. He would go on to serve in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany. Upon leaving the military he returned to Waverly and began a long career as a truck driver. Howard was employed at Seward Lumber Co. in Claremont for 31 years until he retired in 1992 due to declining health. He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Dorethea H. Brown of Waverly; four sons, Howard Brown Jr. (Cynthia) of McKenney, Robert Brown and Antonio Brown of Waverly; and Perry Brown of Prince George; one daughter, LaShawn Anderson (Kirk) of Petersburg; five granddaughters, Dorethea Mims (Terance), Barbara Brown and Morgan Brown of Petersburg, LaTarsha Brown of Prince George and Shaunderia Jackson of Waverly; two grandsons, Perry Brown Jr. of Prince George and Robert Williams of Waverly; two sisters, Odessa Brown and Pauline Jackson of Petersburg; one brother, Nelson Brown (Anneice) of Petersburg; one sister-in-law, Kathryn Brown of Baltimore; 12 great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Lillian V. Carson NORFOLK - Lillian Vlasis "Lily" Carson passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2009, in a local hospital. Born in Manhattan, New York City, she was the daughter of the late Jefferies Vlasis of Greece and Ida Keller Vlasis of Switzerland. She was the widow of Edward G. Carson, a landscape architect and an artist. She loved life and all that God has put before us and made the most of that in every way that was possible. Lily was educated in music, languages, and early childhood education at Hunter College in New York City and at Old Dominion University. Mrs. Carson was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Tidewater Music Teacher Forum, Music Teacher's National Association, National Guild of Music Teachers, Virginia Symphony, Norfolk Society of Arts, Hellenic Women's Club and the Ghent Garden Club. As a teacher for more than 40 years, she taught kindergarten for 15 years and gave private piano lessons for more than 44 years. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Richard B. Franklin and his wife Kathleen of Midlothian, Va., James Franklin of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Jeffrey J. Franklin and his wife Dorinda of Norfolk; her stepchildren, Becky and Jacques Gagne of Blue Hill, Maine, Tracy and Patty Carson of Portland, Maine, Cindy and Bruce Paxon of Gratis, Ohio, and Kathleen Carson and Susan Long of Belfast, Maine; a brother, John Vlasis and his wife Yolanda of Charlottesville, Va.; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Rosa Irene Cook SUFFOLK - Rosa Irene Cook, 84, died at Sentara Obici Hospital on July 7, 2009 after a short battle with cancer. A native of North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Talmadge Clary and Dora George Clary. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Otis Aldine Fravel; daughters, Audrey Chipman, Elizabeth Braford and granddaughter, Shannon Chipman. She retired from the City of Suffolk as the Senior Citizens Director and also served as a hostess for Hardees on Pruden Boulevard for more than 20 years. She attended Wilroy Baptist Church. Rosa was very involved raising money as a volunteer for Relay For Life; a member of the STOP organization and very active in the Senior Citizens Olympics winning more than 200 medals. She is survived by her husband, Roger "Duck" Lee Cook of Corapeake, N.C.; her daughters and sons-in-law, Rosa Lee and Danny Gardner of Gates, N.C., Kathy and Mathew Ramage of Suffolk and Cindy and Bruce Moegenburg of Suffolk; her sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Sue Fravel of Mannington, W.Va., Donald and Polly Fravel of Harrisonburg, Robert and Brenda Fravel of Cumberland, Md., Ronald and Ginny Fravel of Arkansas and Charles Fravel of Eure, N.C.; stepchildren, Bobbie and Nicolle Cook of Windsor, Delores Cook of Stoney Creek, Va., Roger Mill Cook of Petersburg; 32 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. was spent in the Pacific Theater, including Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. Upon his return home, he became an over the road truck driver, eventually retiring from Associated Transport. With the feel of the road still in him, he drove again briefly for Jones Transfer and Smith Transfer and finally as a bus driver for Bedford County schools. Along the way, Jay and Elmyra opened their home for her dad, his mother and two nieces to live for a period of time., He was a member of VFW Post #4522, American Legion Post #0080, and Teamsters Local 171. He was a member of Midland Baptist Church and was a faithful member until his health prevented him from attending. He held several positions at Midland, including Superintendent of Sunday School, Deacon, Chairman of Deacons and Treasurer., In addition to his parents, Jay was preceded in death by his faithful and loving wife, Elmyra in 1998; and an infant grandson., Jay is survived by his daughters, Janet Amos, of Roanoke, his caregiver since October, 2008, Carol (Penny) Earhart, of Salem, and Tina S. Earhart, of Affton, Mo.; granddaughters, Jackie P. James G. Gillespie, 85, of Christiansburg, Va., passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2009. He was preceded in death by brothers, Garfield Gillespie and Harold Gillespie; sisters, Joyce Bowen, Phyllis Meredith, and Janet Meredith; daughter, Sandra G. Johnson; and granddaughter, Sarah Colley. He was born on June 2, 1924, in Ada, W.Va., to the late William Jennings and Bertie Pennington Gillespie. He joined the United States Navy in December of 1941 where he served as a Coxswain-Boatsman on LCT for troop movements in the Asiatic and Pacific Theatres. He served in New Guinea, Okinawa, Spain, and Japan during World War II., After his discharge from the Navy in 1945, he met and married Betty Zane Hodges from Thornhill, W.Va. After briefly living in Longview, Wash., they eventually settled in Christiansburg, Va., where Jim was employed with Radford Army Ammunitions Plant until his retirement in 1975., He is survived by his wife, Betty Zane Hodges Gillespie; four daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Alvie Cullop, of Roanoke, Va., Debbie and Stanley Coley, of Christiansburg, Va., Sue and Walter Baumoel, of Roanoke, Va., and Cecile and Brian Beverage, of Troutville, Va.; 10 grandchildren, Brian Cullop, Zac Cullop, Christy Wallace, Stacey Crowder, Phaydra Epperly, Travis Colley, Aaron, Lindsey, and Abby Baumoel, and Austin Beverage; 11 greatgrandchildren, Kara and Lacee Cullop, Andrew Cullop, Alexa Smith, Ashton Crowder, Danielle Keesee, Kayla and Maggie Criner, Eli and Abby Wallace, and Tripp Cullop; one great-great-grandson, Mason Cullop; brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Bonnie Gillespie, of Radford, Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Freda and Travis Quesenberry, of Gulfport, Miss.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mitzi and Clyde East, of McDowell, W.Va.; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends., Jim loved life and lived it to the fullest. He built homes and office buildings all over Tidewater. He was a constant supporter of shelters for man and beast. He never met a stranger and his generosity was boundless. Preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, he is survived by his son, Ron, wife Meredith; seven grandsons, Ron, Jeff, Doug, Bob, Matt, Benjamin and Dan; a whole lot of great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild. She was born in Plageland, S.C., on Sept. 11, 1917, to Esaw Williams and Ida Watts Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Gould. She retired from the Museum of Modern Arts. Surviving are one son, Howard McQueen of Buford; two sisters, Sylvia Adams and Elizabeth Dixon, both of Washington, D.C.; four brothers, Masaw Williams of Waldorf, Md., John Williams of Nevada, and Rufus Williams and Esaw Williams Jr., both of Maryland; one grandchild; and four great-grandchildren. Marc Christopher Robinson, 59, of Church Road, Va., died on Wednesday, July 8, 2009. Though he fought a courageous battle with Huntington's Chorea, he died peacefully in his sleep at home. He was the son of the late Willis A. and Lillian Evelyn Bowman Robinson. Marc worked hard his whole life and was a member of Local #10 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. Marc loved to race and drove both drag racers and muscle cars. Though he loved his racing days, he was whole heartedly a family man. He is survived by his wife, Karin Robinson; daughter, Breyanna Robinson; son, Jacob Martin; sister, Alana Cole; niece, Shannon Dennis; and nephew, Brian Cole. Jul 9, 2009 Roger Lee Farmer Sr., 65, of 67 Mayo Park Drive, Spencer, died Monday, July 6, 2009, at his home. He was born in George Town, S.C., on July 13, 1943, to Jesse C. Farmer and Mary Elizabeth Johnson Farmer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Mabry. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict and was a self-employed contractor for many years. For the past 20 years, he worked as an electrician with Grace Construction. Surviving are his wife, Joyce Taylor Farmer of the home; two sons, Roger Lee Farmer II of Martinsville and Jesse C. Farmer of Ridgeway; a brother, Tommy C. Farmer of Bland, Colo.; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ridgeway Church of God with Pastor Kenny Daniels officiating. Jeffery S. Upton PORTSMOUTH - Jeffery Stevens Upton, 56, of Nottingham Road, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. Jeff was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, and has acted as coach and manager at Olive Branch Little League. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son and friends; and was proudly employed as a superintendant for RGI General Contractors of Norfolk. Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Brown. He is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Wanda Berry Upton; a son, Jeffery Upton; three daughters, Kristie LeMoine, Brandy and Emilee Upton; a grandson, Tristan LeMoine; his mother, Elsewood Stevens Brown; and three brothers. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 10, 2009, in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by Pastor Connie Shoemaker. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery.
