ADERHOLT, Emily Belle Platt, 92, of Hopewell, died Thursday, October 1, 2009 in Riverview on the Appomattox. Mrs. Aderholt was born in Newport News, Va. and had been a long-time resident of Hopewell. She was a member of the Woman's Club of Hopewell, Historic Hopewell Foundation, an officer with APVA, a lifetime member of the Nathaniel Cawsey Garden Club, and a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she was active in St. Catherine's Guild. She was retired from the Department of Social Services in Hopewell, Va. . Mrs. Aderholt was preceded in death by her parents, John M. and Elsie Eleanor Miller Platt; her husband, Charles "Charlie" Lafayette Aderholt; two sisters, Marjorie P. Hering and Sydney P. Voda; and a brother, Harry Platt. She is survived by two daughters, Melissa A. Smith and her husband, Laurel, of Hopewell, Suzanne M. Sebenaler and her husband, Cmdr., USN Brian Sebenaler, of Coronado, Calif.; a son, Charles Kirk Aderholt and his wife, Paige, of Chester, Va., four granddaughters, Kristin Spivey, Elizabeth Westbank, Hannah Sebenaler, Hilary Warthan and her husband, Chad; two sisters, Sylvia P. Cyckevic, of Hopewell, Elsie P. Robinson, of Newfoundland, Pa.; three brothers, John "Jack" M. Platt of Houston, Texas, William "Bill" H. Platt of Hampton, Va., and Robert G. Platt of Richmond, Va. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 11 a.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Bill Taylor, Rector officiating. Interment will be in Appomattox Cemetery. Oct 2, 2009 Betty Jane Baker Clements, 80, of Stanleytown Health Care, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009. She was born March 31, 1929, in Stanleytown to Luther D. Baker and Helen S. Baker. Her parents preceded her in death. She graduated from Bassett High School and National Business College. She worked for Appalachian Power Co. for 40 years as a certified professional secretary, was a charter member and former president of the National Secretaries Association and was named Secretary of the Year for 1971. For 20 years, she was a member of the board of directors and a volunteer at the Montgomery County American Red Cross. She was a lifelong member of Stanleytown United Methodist Church, where she had served as youth choir director and Sunday school teacher. Surviving are her sister, Wanda Baker Pack of Stanleytown, and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Roselawn Burial Park with the Rev. Oct 2, 2009 The funeral for Bobby Ray Thompson, 80, of 98 Locust St., Ridgeway, who died Sept. 30, 2009, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville with the Rev. Thompson was born Nov. 6, 1928, in High Point, N.C., to Herbert Thompson and Nealie Newman Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Barry D. Thompson; and a stepson, Timothy L. Biggs Sr. He had worked at Stone Trucking and RP Thomas Trucking Co. before joining Prillaman and Pace as a plumber, where he retired with more than 30 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ridgeway. Surviving are his wife, Betty A. Thompson of the home; a son, Bobby R. CONNALLY, Michael Lloyd, 53, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, October 1, 2009, after a courageous battle with Huntington's Disease. He was a graduate of Radford University and a former sports reporter. He was a dear and sweet person who was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew L. Connally and Dillie T. McGarry; a sister, Andrea C. Owen; and his stepfather, Edward J. McGarry. He is survived by his devoted aunt, Shirley E. Phillips (Henry); a nephew, Justin W. Owen (Jen); a cousin, Adam C. Phillips; a stepbrother, Edward J. McGarry III; stepsisters, Julie M. Holswade (Henry) and Elizabeth M. Trop (David); numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Janice Marguerite (Pete) Sink Campbell, 97, and a native of Roanoke, Va., died at Nazareth Home in Louisville, Ky., on Tuesday, September 29, 2009. She was the daughter of the late John W. and Berosia F. Sink. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Ambrose Campbell; a son, Timothy Joseph; a grandson, James K. (Jamie) Dunn Jr.; two sisters, Lula Pring and Mildred Cammer; and two brothers, Carl B. Sink and Raymond Sink. She is survived by three sons, Thomas W. (Billy) Campbell and his wife, Kathryn, of Shelby, N.C., David F. (Sonny) Campbell and the late Jane G. Campbell, of Asheville, N.C., and Michael B. Campbell, of Roanoke, Va.; two daughters, Sister Janice Campbell SCN, of Nazareth, Ky., Marjorie C. Dunn and her husband, James K. (Jim) Dunn, of Longs, S.C.; 14 grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren; and two greatgreat-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Lois F. Dezelich, of Bedford, Va.; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Libby) Sink, of Roanoke, Va.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special lifelong friend, Eloise Wright, of Roanoke, Va., Janice (Pete) Campbell was a graduate of Jefferson High School, Class of 1931. She was a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church for over 50 years. A charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America, she held several offices. She was an associate member of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth for over 30 years. She was also active in Catholic School PTA's for over 30 years. Her involvement in senior activities included Vice President of the Senior's Club at Fairington Apartments. It was during this time she performed for the Senior Olympics and entertained many clubs in the Roanoke area, performing her dance routines, including "Swan Lake," "The Charleston," and "Clogging." One of her favorite retirement pastimes was attending Kentucky Derby events, one of which she won third place in the famous Kentucky Derby Hat Contest., will be observed. Lonnie Onimus Clark III VIRGINIA BEACH - Lonnie Onimus Clark III, 66, known to most as "Butch," passed away Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. Butch was born in Parris Island, S.C., Aug. 13, 1943 to the late Dr. L.O. and Carolyn Clark Jr. He was a graduate of Virginia Beach High School and attended UNC at Chapel Hill. A member of the Princess Anne Country Club, Butch was a golfer who loved hunting and his many friends. HAYES, Justin F., 98, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on September 29, 2009. Born on November 28, 1910 in Brooklyn, N.Y., he graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology, and was a loyal employee of American Machine and Foundry, Stitching Division and a 60-year member of the Masonic order. He and his wife shared a love of children and delighted in making crafts for the Sunshine Circle bazaar to benefit Children's Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, infant daughter, and brother. He is survived by Margaret, his loving wife of 70 years; two daughters, Evelyn Hayes and Carol (Barry) Tyree; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at Lakewood Manor on Sunday, October 4th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Bon Secours Hospice, Children's Hospital, or Epiphany Lutheran Church are appreciated.

HILL, Selma Elizabeth Berry, died September 30, 2009 at her Lakewood Manor residence. She was the widow of Roland Scott Hill Sr. She is survived by three children, Susan Hill Boisseau and her husband, Peter, Christopher Oman Hill and his wife, Kathryn Jaquette, and Roland Scott Hill Jr. and his wife, Maria; three grandchildren, Ryan Jason Karp of Medway, Mass., Susan Hansford Hill of New York City and Katherine Scott Hill of Richmond; two stepgrandsons, John Richelieu Boisseau and Andrew Stewart Boisseau of Austin, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Chandler, Maxine and Jackson Karp of Medway, Mass.; and one stepgreat-granddaughter, Nicole Marie Boisseau of Austin, Texas. Mrs. Hill was born December 25, 1918 in Orange, Va., the third child of Lucie Carter Oman Berry and Christopher Calhoun Berry. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Porter Duane Berry and Irvine Carter Berry. She grew up in Vinton, graduated from William Fleming High School and attended Longwood College. Mrs. Hill and her late husband raised their children in Courtland, Va., where she participated in all aspects of civic and church life. She was a member of Courtland United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School to the youngest parishioners, who called her Miss Selma. After she retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Courtland, she moved to the Westover Hills neighborhood of Richmond. She attended Westover Hills United Methodist Church and was a member of the James River Woman's Club and the Wayside Garden Club. One of her favorite pastimes was volunteering in the gift shop at Maymont. She loved laughter, good books and a good conversation, and always drew a crowd wherever she was. She delighted in nature's beauty and loved every living thing that purred, barked or flew. Mrs. Hill moved to Lakewood Manor in 1998. Her family is grateful to the staff for the love and care given to her and to them. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your favorite charity. He was born Oct. 2, 1932, in Franklin County to Ralph J. Carter and Roxie C. Carter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna O. Carter; and three sisters, Reba Mabry, Joy Underwood and Faye Carter. Carter served in the Army and retired from DuPont, where he worked in the Salthouse. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and served on the social, Christmas decorating and property committees. Surviving are his daughter, Terri C. Flanagan of Martinsville; two sons, Mark E. Carter of Martinsville and Dean B. Carter of Greensboro, N.C.; five sisters, Ellen Barbour of Henry, Margaret Jones of Ferrum, Clara Cannady of Sanville and Betty C. Adkins and Janie Belcher, both of Ferrum; a brother, Aaron Carter of Ferrum; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hillcrest Baptist Church with the Rev. KING, Evelyn Cosby, passed away at her home in Williamsburg on September 25, 2009. She will be lovingly missed by her husband of 65 years, Harold "Hal"; her daughter, Kathy; and her son, Chip. She also leaves her daughter-in-law, MaryLynn; and her grandsons, Matthew and Riley. Evelyn was born in Richmond on October 29, 1922. She attended John Marshall High School and graduated from the College of William & Mary, class of 1943. She worked for the State under Governor Mills Godwin before she and Hal retired to Williamsburg. Her passion for writing reflected her insights on life. She wrote "Stepping Out: From Kitchen to Capitol," "The Golden Chain," "A Christmas Eve Adventure," and a number of poetry collections. Her story about growing up "Richmond" on Church Hill in the 1920s was published in Richmond Magazine. She was active at W&M, creating a volunteer program and assisting the Pi Beta Phi Chapter on campus. Arrangements are being made to celebrate her love and joy in life on October 25. KUBU, Edward Thomas, November 19, 1926 to September 28, 2009, son of Thomas and Frances Kubu, graduated New York University with Phi Beta Kapa honors and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. He was employed by the Allied Chemical Company and was director of Research and Development. His interest in education included the hiring of the first President for John Tyler Community College. He was also an advisor to the Generals at Fort Lee and the Defense General Supply Center. He was an avid hunter of deer and wild birds and hosted many enjoyable game dinners. He also enjoyed fly fishing in Aspen, Colorado and Grand Teton, Wyoming streams, where he constructed his own fishing flies. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Marilyn Alexander Kubu; and his sister, Helen A. Mahnke of Ocala, Florida. Visitation will be held at Bliley's-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Road, Saturday, October 3, 2009, 2 to 4 p.m.

PAINTER, Patrick Lynn, 45, of Glen Allen, went to be with the Lord, September 27, 2009. He was employed by Exide Technologies and had been a longtime driver for Schneider National Trucking. He is survived by his parents, Lee and Janet Painter; his sister, Sylvia Post, all of Richmond; brother, Curtis Painter of Frederick, Md.; also several nieces and nephews. POWELL, Marcia Horner, of Richmond, died Wednesday, September 30, 2009. She was predeceased by her husband, Llewellyn Powell, in 1991; and her sister, Blanche Horner Rowley, in 1994. Survivors include her three children, Sarah Powell Prior and her husband, Duane Prior, Morris Horner Powell and his wife, Mary O'Reilly, and John Ashton Powell and his wife, Glorianne Gargano; her grandchildren, Llewellyn Powell, John Ashton Powell, Courtney Prior Rosenberger, Jordan Scott Prior, Katherine McConnell Powell, Michael Horner Powell, and Margaret Robichaud Powell; her great- granddaughter, Quinn Ashton Powell; and her nieces, Lee Green, Ann Rowley, and Grace Tressler. Marcia was a graduate of VCU and a renowned French teacher at the Collegiate Schools for more than 20 years. Her dedication to the University led her to teach at VCU in her retirement. In her 80s she continued to teach French to other senior citizens at the Shepherd's Center. She touched many lives with her love of learning and her love of the French language. She led guided tours for her family and friends in Switzerland, where she spent her youth. For the last 13 years, she enjoyed being a charter resident of the Hermitage at Cedarfield. A celebration of her life will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Cedarfield on Saturday, October 3. Henry Joseph Perangelo WILLIAMSBURG - Henry Joseph Perangelo, a native of Shelter Island, N.Y., and current resident of Williamsburg, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at the age of 76. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Louise Perangelo, and his son, Michael Perangelo. He was an engineer who worked for Grumman Aerospace Corp. on Long Island, N.Y. Howard E. Price GLOUCESTER - Howard E. Price, 73, passed away to the loving arms of his Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 at Sentara Regional Medical Center in Williamsburg following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Price; his mother, Fannie Eva Davis; and his brothers, Eric Scott Price and Robert Ronald Price. He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Mary Jeanette "Net" L. Price; his children, Johny Price, Chad Price and his wife Jennifer, Carrie Harper and her husband Don, Betty Jordan, Brad Ward and his wife Beth, Karen Borja and her husband Dave, Laura Ward and her husband Scott, Grace Via, Hope Reason and her husband Gary, Daniel Via and his wife Fong, David Via and his wife Patricia; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Don Price and his wife Cherie and Bill Price and his wife Pat; sister, Jean Green; and many close friends. In his early years, Ed worked at several odd jobs. After graduating from Salem High School in Salem, W.Va., he served his country as an aircraft dispatcher in the U.S. Air Force. He attended several colleges and trade schools, and his work experience was quite diverse. Of all his many accomplishments and job experiences, Ed found his position as engineering technician at NASA Langley Research Center most rewarding. He retired from NASA Langley Research Center after 38 years of dedicated and effective Federal Service in 1998. He was an active member of White Marsh Baptist Church. Ed was a kind-hearted man who had a special gift in working with animals. He enjoyed traveling, working on his computer, and spending time with his family. Ed had a creative mind and could engineer solutions to almost any mechanical problem. He used these gifts to help others throughout his life. Visitation for family and friends will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, in Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The funeral will be held Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Scott Pond officiating. SCIUK, Marguerite, age 55, of Manakin-Sabot, Va., lost her six-year battle with brain cancer. She passed away peacefully at home September 29, 2009. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Kevin Sciuk; her parents, Carl and Marguerite Frauenpreis of Boonton Twp., N.J.; two brothers, Carl Frauenpreis (Isabel) of Wallingford, Conn. and Scott Frauenpreis (Robin) of Newton, N.J. After being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2003, Marguerite founded Brain Tumor Resource and Information Network (B.R.A.I.N.), a Richmond-based all-volunteer nonprofit organization, with the mission of providing brain tumor information to newly diagnosed patients, increasing their quality of life, increasing public awareness and raising funds for research into a cure for this devastating disease. The family would like to express their great appreciation to Dr. David Reardon and the entire medical team at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University for their hope and loving, knowledgeable care over the past six years. Also to Trang Dieu and her entire family for the love they have shown and the sacrifices they have made to care for Marguerite during the end of her journey. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at St. Benedict Catholic Church, with interment to follow at Hollywood Cemetery. SMILEY, Lena Rae Knight, age 72, of Gwynn's Island and Mechanicsville, lost her courageous battle with cancer Wednesday evening. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Jack Smiley; three daughters and their husbands, Debbie and Jack Torza, Jackie and Rick Allen, and Karen and Troy Rollins; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Rae, as she was lovingly known to her family and friends, was born in Lufkin, Texas, one of 12 brothers and sisters. As a loyal Texan, she started out as a Houston Oilers fan, but after moving to Virginia she became a dedicated Redskins fan. Rae spent every Sunday during the season wearing her favorite jersey cheering for the Skins no matter how bad their season. Mary Louise graduated from Madison County High School and Smithdeal-Massey Business College and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in 1976. She served Richmond Public Schools as an administrative assistant for 39 years. She was a Life Member of Richmond Educational Office Professionals, Virginia Educational Office Professionals and the National Educational Office Professionals. She was a founding member of Richmond Educational Office Personnel in 1979. Mary Louise was a devoted member of Seventh Street Christian Church and an active member of the Christian Women's Ministries. Laura Elder Wray, age 95, of Ford, Va., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at her home. She was the widow of Gilbert Wray. Surviving are two sons, Ronnie and Michael Wray; daughters-in-law, Donna, Doris and Ellen; four grandchildren; Jason, Matt, Shannon and Shawn Wray; five great-grandchildren, Brianna, Casey, Kayla, Matthew Jr. and Walker Wray; six nieces, Catherine, Cheryl, Helen Carol, Joyce, Lacy and Linda; three nephews, Pete Jr., Wallace Earl and Wynn; one goddaughter, Sherry. Mrs. Wray was a devout member of Hawkins Memorial Presbyterian Church, and worked for many years serving wonderful meals to the local children of Midway High School, which is now an elementary school. She leaves behind many funny and fond memories to cherish for her loving family and many friends. WAGNER, Marie Butler, 97, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 29, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Charles A. Wagner. She is survived by her son, Charles William "Bill" Wagner and wife, Karen; devoted daughter, Frances Marie Wagner; five grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. She was a charter member of Calvary United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of Montrose Chapter #176 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She worked for A & M Pullen and Sons, CPA. She was an unselfish and giving person who was devoted to God and will be deeply missed by her family and friends. WARD, Charles Henry, 65, passed away September 30, 2009 at his home. A lifelong resident of Southampton County and a retired farmer, Charles was a son of the late Beecher Henry Ward Jr. and Mildred Scott Ward. He was a member of the Sedley Hunt Club, Sons of the Confederacy and was a 1962 graduate of Southampton High School where he was an Honorable Mention Basketball All-American. He was a member of Courtland Baptist Church and attended True Word Christian Church. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 32 years, Shelby Jenkins Ward; his daughter, Tina W. Taylor and her husband, Christopher, of Courtland; two sisters, Judith W. Wells of Hopewell and Brenda W. Bradshaw of Greenville, S.C.; a brother, James H. Ward of Courtland; a grandson, Christopher Taylor, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved son, C.H. George Emery Wade, 95, a resident of Brandon Oaks, in Roanoke, Va., died on Wednesday, September 30, 2009. He was the son of the late Clarence George and Ethel Lee Burnette Wade. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Naomi Brandon Wade; and his brother, Dr. Frank Alton Wade. Mr. Wade was a graduate of Jefferson High School and Roanoke College and received his master's degree from the University of Michigan. During the 1940's he served his country as a cryptanalyst with the Army Security Agency in the War Department. William C. Haynes 

Oct 2, 2009 A memorial service for William "Willie" Clayton Haynes, 94, of 1500 Old Leaksville Road, Ridgeway, who died Sept. 29, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Community Funeral Services in Ridgeway with the Revs. Thomas Hardy and Bill Truesdale officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the service Saturday and other times at the home. He was born April 8, 1915, in Spencer to John Beverly Haynes and Sarah Elizabeth Smith Haynes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nora Maxey; and three brothers, Allen Haynes, Morton Haynes and Robert Haynes. Haynes was an Army veteran and purple heart recipient, having served in the European Theater, Battle of the Bulge and more than two years in Panama. He retired from American Furniture Co., where he worked for 50 years as a sample maker. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and had been a Pythian member for more than 50 years. He was a member of Smith Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Bettie Reid Haynes of the home; four sons, M. Clayton Haynes of Roanoke, William G. Haynes and Timothy W. Haynes, both of Ridgeway, and Beverly G. Haynes of Danville; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
