Huger, Elizabeth

Elizabeth C. Huger VIRGINIA BEACH - Betty Ann (B.A.) Huger died Oct. 5, 2009. B.A. was born in Norfolk Feb. 24, 1936, the oldest and hotly contested favorite child of Jackson and Mary Ruth Carroll. B.A. graduated from Granby High School in 1954 and from The College of William and Mary in 1958. Upon graduation from college, she returned to Granby and taught English. Over the years, her passion for education also led her to teach at Cape Henry Collegiate and Independence Middle Schools. Along the way, she obtained her master's degree from ODU in library sciences. While her children may never have shared the same passion for the correct use of pronouns, she never let this prevent her from offering the correct use of "I" or "me." On June 25, 1960, B.A. married Ben Huger of Lexington, Va. The couple settled in Virginia Beach and raised three children, Carroll, Ben and Scott. B.A., always the teacher, could often be found taking her children to The Oceanfront Library in search of a good book. As her children grew older, she gave her time to such organizations as the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad and the Virginia Beach Juvenile Courts. Several years ago, Alzheimer's crept into her life. While the disease may have taken much from her, it could not take her spirit. B.A. still possessed that same little twinkle in her eye that gave joy to so many. B.A. is survived by her husband Ben; daughter, Carroll Griffin and son-in-law George; sons, Ben and daughter-in-law Laurie and Scott and daughter-in-law Marni; and grandchildren Tucker, Dean, Lane, Ben, Scott and Nicholas who knew B.A. as "Grammy" and "Bego." They hold many great memories of their grandmother's off-beat sense of humor. B.A. is also survived by her sister, Jackie Limerick and brother-in-law Richard of Norfolk and brother-in-law, Derby Huger and his wife Jackie of Fort Myers, Fla. A celebration of B.A.'s life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. Thank you to all of B.A. and Ben's friends for making this journey with Alzheimer's bearable. Jeanette, Peggy and Sandra -- you all are the greatest.
