Altizer, Betty Jeanne Enicks

Betty Jeanne Enicks Altizer, 73, a resident of Roanoke County, Va., passed away on Friday, October 16, 2009, in her home surrounded by her loving family and friends. She passed peacefully embraced with love and light. Betty was born on November 20, 1935, in West Virginia, and was married to Jack V. Altizer just shy of 50 years. Betty was a graduate of East Bank High School, in West Virginia, and of West Virginia University where she obtained both her bachelor of science and masters in mathematics. She taught high-level math to engineering students at West Virginia University. She also taught math at Virginia Commonwealth University and Roanoke College. Before her illness, Betty worked with her husband and daughter at their family business, Altizer & Altizer, where she was the office manager and accounts manager. Her essence was of beauty, inside and out, intelligence, kindness, and unconditional love. Her husband and her daughter could not have asked for a better wife and mother. Betty is survived by her husband, Jack; her daughter, Bettina C. Altizer; her sister, Peggy Wurtz; her brother-in-law, George Wurtz; her sister-inlaw, Linda Martin; her loving and caring friends, Bill Lindsey, Cathy LaPrade, Laura Brooks, and Marlene Williamson; her nephew, George Wurtz; her nieces, Jeanne Talhouk and Jayne Wurtz Ford; and her co-workers, Diane Reese and Carolyn Miller. Eula A. Cash NEW YORK - Eula Allen Cash passed away in New York City Oct. 14, 2009, after a long illness. Eula was the third of seven children born to Dequest and Carrie Johnson Allen July 11, 1917. Eula was predeased by three sisters, two brothers and her only child, Mikell Abdul-Latif. She attended public schools in New York and Norfolk, and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in June 1937. She moved to New York City where she was married and worked in hospitals until her retirement. Eula is survived by a sister, Joyce A. Jones of Norfolk; a sister-in-law, Dr. Madge B. Allen of Tamarac, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Faridah Abdul-Latif of Harrisburg, Pa.; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Terry Anne Baird Jones VIRGINIA BEACH - Terry Anne Baird Jones, 70, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009. Born Aug. 28, 1939 in Oxnard, Calif., Terry was the daughter of the late retired U.S. Navy Capt. Leonard J. Baird and Marie Jeanette Somers Baird. She was also predeceased by her stepmother, Kyle Foley Baird. Terry grew up as a "navy daughter" permanently settling in Virginia Beach in 1977. She received her B.S. in education from Old Dominion University and taught in the Virginia Beach School System. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach, Virginia Beach Garden Club, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Daughters of the American Colonists, and Daughters of the American Revolution. Terry is survived by her husband, Robert W. "Bobby" Jones Sr., to whom she was happily and lovingly married for 26 years. The couple resided in Croatan and enjoyed doting on their grandchildren and being with friends at the Beach, as well as making friends around the globe in their extensive travels. She is also survived by her children, William Baird Spicuzza and his friend Lucy Bell, James A. Spicuzza and his wife Christine, Robert W. Jones Jr. and his wife Kristi, Amanda Jones Chambers and her husband David; her grandchildren, Taylor, Morgan and Jones Spicuzza, Sarah, Robert and Gregory Jones, "Little" David and Luke Chambers, and Harrison Rothschild; her brother James F. Baird; and among her many friends, "special sister," Jennifer Boyenga, Laurie Michels and Joyce Shotton. The family will receive friends at H.D. Kathryn L. Lawrence VIRGINIA BEACH - Kathryn L. Lawrence, wife of retired U.S. Navy Capt. Edward Lawrence, died Oct. 19, 2009. Kay and Ed married in 1944, traveled extensively throughout their military career and retirement, and settled in Virginia Beach in 1967. She was an active volunteer for many organizations throughout her life as well as an educator. Besides her husband, she is survived by their five children, Eloise, Stephen (Theresa), Mary Ellen (Rocky), Anne (Hans) and Katie; as well as 10 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. She was predeceased by their son, James. She was one of six children and is survived by her sister, Patricia Howard of Livingston, N.J., and Robert McCarty (Jill) of Clarks Green, Pa.; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Robert Marcum CHESAPEAKE - Robert Marcum, 79, passed away Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Crum, W.Va., June 29, 1930, the son of the late Benjamin F. and Sally Perry Marcum. He was the first ordained minister to be ordained by the Rev. Dave Libengood of Immanuel Baptist Church in 1993. He was also a deacon in the church. He was always willing to help any one in need. He was involved with the gospel radio program with WFGH in Fort Gay, W.Va. He was a missionary involved with the Jamaican Bible Ministry having traveled to Jamaica to help spread the gospel. He was an avid gardener and he loved Ford Motor Co. and NASCAR. He was proud member of the United Auto Workers. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dixie Faye; his two daughters, Rhoda and her husband Stephen Brock and Kim and her husband Mike Esposito, both of Chesapeake. Also surviving are his five grandchildren, Jennifer, Danny, Dustin, Justin and Isabella. He is also survived by his nine siblings, Mildred Parsley, Gracie Webb, Oscar Marcum, Florine Stolz, Willie Marcum, Woodrow Marcum, Dorothy Perry, Linda Ison and Lacy Marcum. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1012 N. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake. The Rev. Dave Libengood will officiate. James John Standing Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - James John Standing Jr., 75, of Edgewater, Fla., died Oct. 18, 2009. Mr. Standing was born Sept. 6, 1934 in Virginia Beach to Marie and James J. Standing. He was a graduate of Virginia Beach High School and attended Wake Forest University and East Carolina University. Jim later moved to Morgan City, La., and worked as a commercial diver in the oil industry. He and his wife, Patricia moved to Edgewater, Fla. in 2000 from Baton Rouge, La. Jim enjoyed gardening and his computer where he keep up with all of his many friends. Jim also enjoyed college football. He is survived by his loving wife, Pat; his children, Barbara (Ken) Hudson of Memphis, Tenn., Marie Standing of Santa Monica, Calif., and JJ Standing of Morgan City, La.; eight brothers and sisters, Diane (Bill) Perry of Annapolis, Md., Robert (Kathy) and Guy Standing of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Patrick (Lisa), Michael (Helen), Steve (Becky) Standing and Marie (Scott) Beck, all of Virginia Beach, and Mary Linda (Dennis ) Merklinger of Lexington, Va.; 85 nieces and nephews. Earl Spinner Mr. Earl Spinner departed this life Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at his residence, 3780 Peter's Creek Road, Big Island. He was born June 30, 1930, to the late Caroline Watkins Spinner and Sandy Spinner. He was preceded in death by two children, James Earl and Nancy Spinner; four brothers, Allen, Clifton, Walter and Sandy Spinner Jr.; and three sisters, Catherine Scott, Maria Moss and Maryatte Browley. Earl confessed to Christ at an early age and joined the Reed Creek Baptist Church and later moved his membership to the Sharon Baptist Church. He leaves to cherish his memory a lovely wife, Helen Spinner; 15 children, nine boys, Wallace and Jerry Spinner of Lynchburg, Shelwood Spinner (Joyce) of Monroe, Charles Spinner of Bradenton, Fla., Milton Spinner (Tammy) of Buena Vista, David, Arceno, Percy and Kenny Spinner (Crystal) all of Big Island; four girls, Jackie Stewart (Wallace) of Bradenton, Fla., Dorothy Brown (Mike) of Buena Vista, Lisa Spinner (John) of Madison Heights and Barbara Helm (Edgar) of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Albert Scott of Big Island; three sisters-in-law, Katie Spinner of Lynchburg and Louise Spinner and Mary Tuner Spinner of Big Island; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A special thanks to the Hospice nurses that worked with Earl. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at Sharon Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. His remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. James Earl Wiggins HOBBSVILLE - James Earl Wiggins, 85, of the 200 block of Punch Bowl Road, passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, in the Skilled Nursing Facility of Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Mr. Wiggins was born Aug. 31, 1924 in Gates County, and was the third oldest of eight children born to the late John Nurney and Hattie Ward Wiggins. Earl was a hardworking man throughout his life. He began hauling logs at the age of 16 and continued his trucking career into his early 70s. For the last 10 years, he worked part time at the Hobbsville Recycling Center. He was dedicated to his work and always provided well for his family. He was a member of Warwick Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Beulah Blanchard Wiggins; sisters, Elsie Wiggins and Pauline Carter; and brother, J.N. Wiggins. Surviving are his daughter, Trudy Quinn and husband Lloyd of Matthews; two sons, Randy Wiggins of Clinton and Timmy Wiggins and wife Katy of Matthews; four sisters, Frances Riddick of Portsmouth, Margie Robertson of Corapeake, Elizabeth Rountree of Eure and Shirley Layden of Hobbsville; six grandchildren, Joel, Grace, Curran, Brandon and Neal Wiggins and Abby Quinn; a special niece, Peggy Riddick of Hobbsville; and his dear friend and companion, Augustine Rountree of Eure. Surviving are his wife, Frances Eloise Williams; two sons, Joseph I. Williams Jr. and his wife Nancy of Chesapeake and Ray Williams and his wife Faith, all of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Benjamin Joseph Williams, Nicholas Todd Williams, James Matthew Williams, Melissa Ann Williams, and Cheryl F. Keith; two great- grandchildren; and a brother, Benjamin R. Williams of Virginia Beach. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jackie Celentano.
