Janie Spradlin Aesy, 82, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 17, 2009. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Aesy Jr.; one brother; and four sisters. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Surviving is her daughter, Cheryl M. Aesy, of Roanoke, son and daughter-in-law, Charles R. and Diane M. Aesy, of Troutville, grandchildren, Charles R. Aesy III and Victoria G. Aesy; brother, David L. Spradlin; sister, Agnes S. Chaves, both of Richmond, Va.; also several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Springtree Rehab and Healthcare Center Unit II for all their care and support. Wayne D. Battle PORTSMOUTH - Wayne D. Battle, a native of Portsmouth and longtime resident of Los Angeles, passed away Oct. 12, 2009, at the age of 54. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he graduated from Portsmouth Public Schools. He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Helen Battle and two brothers, Milton Battle Jr. and Robert Battle. He is survived by his wife, Marie Battle; one son, Wayne D. Battle Jr.; one daughter, Laquawn Battle; and six grandchildren, all of Los Angeles. He also leaves to mourn three brothers, Alphonsa Battle (Theresa) and Vernon Battle (Yvonne), both of Portsmouth, and Henry Battle of Dillwyn, Va.; two sisters, Earline Parker (David) and Margaret Baker; an aunt, Elnora Jones; an uncle, Leon Battle, all of Portsmouth; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Kathryn L. Lawrence VIRGINIA BEACH - Kathryn L. Lawrence, wife of retired U.S. Navy Capt. Edward Lawrence, died Oct. 19, 2009. Kay and Ed married in 1944, traveled extensively throughout their military career and retirement, and settled in Virginia Beach in 1967. She was an active volunteer for many organizations throughout her life as well as an educator. Besides her husband, she is survived by their five children, Eloise, Stephen (Theresa), Mary Ellen (Rocky), Anne (Hans) and Katie; as well as 10 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. She was predeceased by their son, James. She was one of six children and is survived by her sister, Patricia Howard of Livingston, N.J., and Robert McCarty (Jill) of Clarks Green, Pa.; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Oct 20, 2009 The funeral for Sherwood Edward Stockton Sr., 73, of 2920 Chatham Road, Martinsville, who died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at the Golden Living Center in Martinsville, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hines Funeral Services. The Rev. Joe Robert Hairston will officiate. Burial will be in the Hairston family cemetery in Axton. Friends are being received at the home. Stockton was born on Oct. 1, 1936, in Martinsville to Lizzie Hodge Stockton and James Edward Stockton. His father preceded him in death. He served in the Army and worked for the Henry County Public Service Authority for 20 years before retiring. He was a member of Jerusalem Christian Church. Surviving, in addition to his mother of Martinsville, are his wife, Linda D. Stockton of the home; two sons, Sherwood Stockton Jr. and Timothy V. James Edward Wood James Edward Wood, 70, of Madison Heights, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009. He was the husband of Barbara Wood. Mr. Wood was born Friday, Sept. 8, 1939, in Fayette County, W.Va., a son of the late Oscar Jessie Wood and Irene Ann Fox Wood. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. He was retired from Buncher Rail Car Co. of Lynchburg, where he was a welder. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Madison Heights. The family would like to say thanks for the prayers and support from the church family and the Rev. Dr. Harland Cooke, the Rev. Brian Hudson and their families. A true lover of the outdoors, James could oftentimes be found in his garden. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two stepdaughters, Beverly Sauls of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Joann Schoepflin and husband, John Paul, of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, William F. Wood and Howard Ronald Wood and his wife, Patricia, all of Lynchburg; two sisters, Vicky Charles of Lynchburg and Brenda Pepe and her husband, Matteo, of California; a sister-in-law, Bell Wood of Dry Fork; and a very special cousin, Woodrow Bennett, and his wife, Sheila, of Madison Heights. In addition to his surviving relatives, many thanks go to his mother-in-law, Myrtle (MAW) Slone of Lynchburg, and two special brothers-in-law and their wives, Thurman and Betty Osborne of Madison Heights and Donald and Gladys Justice of Forest, for all the help and support through his long battle with cancer. The family would also like to thank Dr. John MacNeill and Hospice of the Hills for the special care that was given during his illness. Wells, Louis Cecil

Louis Cecil Wells, 80, of Daleville, Va., passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2009, after a short battle with cancer. Louis was born on March 6, 1929, at home along Guest River between Wise and Norton, Va., to Joseph and Blanche Graybeal Wells. He graduated from Wise High School in 1946 and enlisted in the Navy after graduation. During his three years in the Navy, he attended electronics school and later taught at the Officer's Electronic School., After leaving the Navy, Louis attended Georgia Tech, completing both his under graduate and master's degree in electrical engineering. While at Georgia Tech, he worked at WGST radio station, led a Boy Scout Troop and was a member of ODK. While still in school, he married his high school sweetheart, Vernelle Mullins, on August 15, 1953. Louis' career included engineering and management positions in a number of aviation electronics firms located in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Iowa and Florida. His love of aviation carried over to his personal life and he held a private pilot's license for single engine aircraft., Louis and Vernelle spent the last 16 years of retirement in the Roanoke area. Wherever he lived, Louis was an active member of the local United Methodist Church. Earlier in his retirement, he served for several years on the Board of Directors of Camp Bethel in Wise, Va. Louis and Vernelle also generously supported a wide variety of individual and organizational ministries., Louis is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Vernelle (Mullins) Wells; his daughters; Betty Means, of Simsbury, Conn., and Linda Gooding, of Roanoke, Va.; his grandchildren, Andrew and Sarah Means, of Chicago, Ill, and Andrew, Emily and Will Gooding, of Roanoke, Va.; his nieces and nephews, Joe Wells, Lamar Bolling, Ruth Wells, and Bruce Wells; and many close friends., He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Blanche Graybeal Wells; his brothers, Clifford and Bruce Wells; his sister, Vivian Bryson; and nephew, Roger Wells., Friends are welcome to call on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road in Daleville.
