Addison Gabriella Combs Funeral services for Addison Gabriella Combs will be conducted at noon Thursday at Swords Creek Community Baptist Church, Swords Creek, Va., with Rev. Chris Musick and Rev. Giles Ball officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon, Va. Pallbearers will be Thomas Harris and Chris Taylor. Honorary pallbearers will be Hailey Tiller, Owen Tiller, Dru-Ann Harris, and Ashby Harris. MARTIN, Anita Louise Patterson, 69, of Powhatan, Va., passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2009. She was preceded in death by a son, Don R. Martin Jr. Anita is survived by her husband of 47 years, Don R. Martin; a daughter, Anne Townsend and her husband, Joey; grandson, Joel; and granddaughter, Jessi, all of Powhatan; a sister, Peggy Carlo (Frank) of Blackstone; three brothers, Stanley Patterson (Shirley) of Powhatan, Bobby Patterson (Carolyn), Dicky Patterson; and a special friend, Doris Patterson, all of Blackstone. Anna Olivia Norris FORRISTAL

FORRISTAL, Anna Olivia Norris, 82, died November 3, 2009. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Dorothy and Hugh Norris, of Deltaville, Va.; and her husband, H. Leo Forristal of Richmond. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan Gayle and Jeffery Bessellieu; and two granddaughters, Olivia and Laura Bessellieu of Mechanicsville; and a devoted friend and fellow Braves fan, Helen Brand. Mrs. Forristal was an active member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church for many years. She was also a life member of Henrico Volunteer Rescue Squad Auxiliary. Her remains lay at Bennett Funeral Home on Lee-Davis Road. Visitation will be Wednesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and where a funeral will be held on Friday at 10 a.m., with a luncheon immediately following the service at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, 5351 Pole Green Road, Mechanicsville. Burial will follow at Norris Cemetery in Deltaville at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to the Broadus Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund.

SANSOM, Anne Elizabeth, 95, of Hopewell, passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at Riverview on the Appomattox. She was born in Phillips, Wisconsin to Phillip and Victoria Kubus Solecki. She was predeceased by her husband, Hassel R. Sansom; her sister, Millie Dorish; and two brothers, Leo and Emanuel Solecki. Surviving are her daughter, Dyanne Mihalcoe and husband, Miron; a son, Raymond R. Sansom and wife, Kathy; two sisters, Mary Kurdziel and Betty Starke; four grandchildren, Miron "Mickey" Mihalcoe Jr., Teresa Fields, Kimberly Greiner, Christopher Scott Sansom; great-grandchildren, Crystal Fields, Benjamin and Lauryn Greiner. Mrs. Sansom was a volunteer at The Shepard's Place and volunteered for over 20 years at John Randolph Medical Center with the Teddy Bear Program. A vigil service will be held Friday, November 6, 2009 at 7 p.m. in St. James Catholic Church, with visitation to follow. A Mass of Christian Resurrection will be held Saturday, November 7, 2009 in St. James Catholic Church at 10 a.m., with Father Frank Wiggins officiating. Bertie Mae Cox Fuller Bertie Mae Cox Fuller, one day short of 89, passed away Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at Cambridge House. She was born Nov. 3, 1920, in Washington Coun ty, Va. She was the daughter of the late Tom and Maggie Cox. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thurman Cox; sister, Della Botts; and an infant daughter, Joyce Ann. She worked at Big Jack and was retired from Bristol Lingerie. She was a member of River Bend Baptist Church. Survivors include: husband of 66 years, Willie E. Fuller; sons, Hugh Fuller and wife Val, Lonnie Fuller and wife Ramona; daughter, Sue Rogers and husband Jerry; six grandchildren, Shawnda Fuller-Alwes, Shelly Rouse, Eric Fuller, Miranda Rogers, Jennifer Armstrong and Stephanie Fuller; five great-grandchildren, Josh, Jake, Karlye, Sullivan and Cheyenne; several nieces and nephews. Callie Sue Harris McClain entered eternal rest Monday, Oct. 26, at her residence., Mrs. McClain was the daughter of the late Goler and Evelyn Harris, and was born Feb. 2, 1938, in Harris, N.C. Mrs. McClain majored in education at John C. Smith University, Charlotte, N.C. Mrs. McClain moved to Virginia in 1966. She worked at Seward Luggage, Petersburg, Va., until she began working for Chesterfield County Public Schools. Her career in teaching ended after a life altering accident in the JC Penney Department Store, Petersburg, Va. Mrs. McClain began collecting and dealing antiques. Her knowledge of sewing propelled a lucrative hobby of designing and repairing fine furs. She occasionally modeled her one-of-a-kind creations for the late legendary Mr. George Wells. Mrs. McClain was known for her eccentricity and regality that transcended her artistic abilities. She was a visionary in fashion and design alike. During the past 10 years, Mrs. McClain dedicated her free time to her flower garden that vividly expressed hher passion for vibrant colors and beauty., Mrs. McClain leaves to honor her memory, husband of 50 years, Robert L. McClain of Ettrick, Va., and her only child, whom she loved, lavished and spoiled, Melinda G.G. McClain-McGhee of Norwalk, Conn., and her only grandchild, whom she loved, nurtured and spoiled as if he were her very own. Preceding Mrs. McClain in death are two brothers, William G. Harris and Jerry L. Harris, and her sister, Zelma L. Harris., Mrs. McClain's surviving siblings are Sam (Daphne) Harris of Monclair, N.J., Andrew (Jean) Harris of Bridgeport, Conn., Bob (Dora) Harris of Paterson, N.J., Shirley (Frank) Frierson of Sumter, S.C., Peggy O. Fields (Muhammed Jabaah) of Norwalk, Conn., Donnell Harris of Forest City, N.C., Robert Harris of Denver; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. JASPER, Charles Eldridge, with his family around him, quietly went home to be with the Lord on November 2, 2009. Charles served the US Army and retired from the Devense General Supply Center after 30 years of service. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to us all. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob J. and Ida Christian Jasper. He leaves to cherish his memory, four children, Keisha Murphy, Charles Comer, Michael Comer, and Trena Parham; six grandchildren, Ke'Oshay Jasper, Markese Jasper, Maiya Jasper, Charles "Asuka" Comer, Angelica Comer, and Jordan Parham; one daughter-in-law, Kazumi Comer; four brothers, Jacob Jr., Burley, James, and Calvin Jasper; three sisters, Mary V. Claude Graham PEMBROKE Jr.

PEMBROKE, Claude Graham Jr., 74, of Weems, Va., died November 3, 2009 at his home, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Graham, also known to friends and family as "Squirrel" or "Sonny," was born in Abingdon, Va., May 25, 1935. The son of Claude Graham Pembroke and Elizabeth Noblett Pembroke of Weems and Kilmarnock. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Albert N. Pembroke. He is survived by his son, Claude Graham Pembroke III and wife, Holly of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Gray, Lee, Caroline, and Christopher Pembroke, Sarah Neal Bachelor and John Neal; daughter, Page Pembroke Rudolph of Kents Store, Va.; grandchildren, Joey Rudolph and Sarah Tate; former wife, Jane Carole Andrews. Graham's boyhood was spent in his beloved Southwest Virginia until age 11. His family moved to Richmond where he attended St. Christopher's and Thomas Jefferson. Graham graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1957 where he attained Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude, and was also a member of Kappa Sigma, Omicron Delta Kappa, Eta Sigma Phi, Sigma Upsilon, and Pi Delta Epsilon. He was a cheerleader, business manager of the yearbook and editor of the Hampden-Sydney Magazine. He attended the University of Virginia, where he received an MBA. A self-employed real estate broker, he enjoyed renovating properties. He was a true lover of the arts. He was an avid boatman and his Deadrise, Lady B, was a familiar sight on Carter's Creek. Florida was a favorite winter retreat, but true to his heart was his farm in Wytheville, and his amazing residence at Weems. Graham's independent, unique, and creative personality can never be duplicated. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Massey Cancer Center or charity of your choice. A celebration of his life will be held at his home in Weems on Saturday, November 14, at 2 p.m.

Curtis L. "Shorty" Cummins Sr., 86, of Ettrick, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at Southside Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late William S. and Annabelle Cummins and the widower of Rose E. Cummins, and was preceded in death by a brother, Randolph Cummins, and a sister, Catherine Cummins Quicke., Mr. Cummins was the former owner of Shorty's Ice Cream for 40 years and the owner of Pickwick Laundromat for 31 years. He is survived by his three sons, Curtis L. Cummins Jr., and wife, Gay of Alabama, William J. Cummins of Washington D.C., and Mark W. MUELLER, Don R., age 61, of Chester, Va., passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. He was born in Phoenix, Ariz., son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Mueller. Mr. Mueller was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp., and a member of Chester Christian Church for ten years before joining Colonial Heights Baptist Church. He was a past Adult Life Group Leader, and was currently involved in the Men's Monday Morning Bible Study, Tuesday Morning Bible Study, Wednesday Lunch Bible Study, and the Emmaeus and Kiros Ministries. Mr. Mueller loved God, his country, his family, white water rafting, reading and politics. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Carol R. Mueller; son, Derek L. Mueller and wife, Leslie of Chester; daughters, Cindy Solomon of Chester, and Nikki Snyder of Ocala, Fla; grandchildren, Kevin and William Mueller, and Sabrina and Jordan Solomon; brothers, Richard Mueller and wife, Clare of Indianapolis, Ind, and Larry Mueller of Naples, Fla. Francie tirelessly supported her husband as they moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona to Virginia as well as on many international trips and several much enjoyed sabbatical experiences in Austria and Australia. In Charlottesville, she supported her children's education and many activities with volunteer work and in more recent years delighted in the activities of her grandchildren. Francie was the dedicated organizer of Farmington Country Club's participation in "Rally for a Cure" from 1994 until she retired from this volunteer post at the conclusion of the 2009 event., The family would like to thank the staff at H.O.P.E Cancer Center and the Martha Jefferson Hospital for the dedicated and compassionate care Francie received., The family will host a memorial celebration of Francie's life in Charlottesville in late November., In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the University of Virginia's Athletic Foundation directed to the Swimming and Diving Teams could be made in memory of Francie's long standing dedication to University of Virginia athletes.

Fred Elmo Newton APPALACHIA, Va. Fred Elmo Newton, 92, passed away Nov. 2, 2009, at the home of his son. He was born on Feb. 4, 1917, to A.L. "Popeye" and Ida Newton. Fred was a lifelong resident of Inman and Appalachia. He served in the U.S. Army for six years, four of which he fought in World War II. Fred took part in the D-Day Invasion and remained in Europe until after the war ended. He was part of the invasion force that marched into France, Belgium and Germany and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Fred was a retired employee of Central Supply Company of Andover, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers and sisters, Clyde Newton, Arthur Newton, Dorothy Newton, Lucille Lovell, Mary Hall, Lorene Johnson and Nell Long. Fred is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sue Thompson Newton of Appalachia; son, James "Tom" Newton and wife Betty of Wise, Va.; granddaughter, Brett Newton; sister, Pauline Newton of Wise, Va.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Nick Brewer officiating. George Crawford

Mr. Crawford was born Oct. 21, 1906, and was the son of the late John Clifton and Mary Niblock Crawford of the Chambersburg (Bethany) Township of Iredell County. His early education was in Iredell County, graduating from Statesville High School (then D. Matt Thompson). He completed Davidson College with honors in 1929, earned his master's degree at UNC Chapel Hill and later his Ph.D. from Ohio State University., In 1940, he was called into service during WWII and served as lieutenant colonel of infantry in the European theater as a member of the First United States Army Headquarters. He took part in Normandy, Central European and Rhineland Campaigns, being awarded six ribbons and three campaign stars., On May 19, 1934, George married Frances Knox of Cornelius who died Aug. 21, 1991. They had no children but both chose to educate children. She taught first grade and he served as a professor of physics at N.C. State University, Davidson College and The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va. He retired from William and Mary and was named Professor Emeritus of Physics at that institution. He cherished the title of Professor., In addition to enjoying teaching, he had many interests and hobbies. He was talented in wood working including marquetry and furniture making. Until he was nearly 100, he shared his knowledge of astronomy through articles and star charts published in the Statesville Record & Landmark., A lifelong Presbyterian, Professor Crawford has served his church as a deacon, elder, and teacher and on many committees. Until recently, he rarely missed Sunday worship at Forest Park., He is survived by a nephew, Robert C. Crawford; and by nieces, Agnes C. Mayes and Mary Frances C. Holland of Statesville, by Sara C. Wolfson of Iowa City and Betty Crawford of Smithfield, N.C. He is also survived by several great and great-great-nieces and nephews whom he adored., In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, Fred N. Crawford Sr., James A. Crawford and Thomas N. Crawford; and by a nephew, Fred N. Crawford Jr., Funeral services will be held at Forest Park Presbyterian Church on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. On Thursday, October 29, 2009, God whispered to Geneva Gunter Ferrell Harris, "My good and faithful servant, come home." Geneva was born on January 24, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, Va., to the late James Gunter and Bell Conway Gunter., Geneva was united in marriage to the late Harvey Harris. She was a devoted, caring and loving mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, great-greatgrandmother, sister, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend. She made friends wherever she went, no one was a stranger to her. She loved, cared for and encouraged the young as well as the old, in all walks of life, to excel to be all that they could be., She answered her call to follow God at an early age. Upon making her move to Roanoke, Geneva became a faithful and dedicated member of Mt. Sinai Apostolic Holiness Church, under the Pastorate of Elder Ora Brown. Later she became a "Watch Care" member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, under the Pastorate of the late Dr. J.E. Young., Geneva was a devoted employee to the families of Isabelle Thompson, Margaret Hunter and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Glexiner. She loved and cared for the children of these families as though they were her own., Geneva was affectionately known to many as "Momma, Grandma, Aunt Geneva, or Big Sis." She had a love for cooking and making sure that no one was hungry. "She was a community Mom.", She had a passion for God's Word and always had a testimony to give. Her witness to God's goodness and mercy at the Early Morning Services, at Jerusalem Baptist Church, always encouraged and lifted-up the spirit of whoever she came in contact with. James E. Richards Sr.

"Doc" or "Bubber "as he was affectionately called by family and friends was born in Suffolk, Va., on Aug. 30, 1920, to the late James L. Richards and the late Annie Biggs Richards. "Doc" owned and operated Suffolk Professional Pharmacy for 35 years. He graduated from South Carolina University in 1942 with a major in chemistry and after a tour in the army during World War II; he entered Howard University where he completed a BS degree in Pharmacy., 'Doc' led a busy and meaningful life and participated in many church, civic and social activities. Some of the activities included: serving on the Board of Directors of the Nansemond Credit Union; vice president of the board of directors of the Retail Merchants Association, member of the Suffolk Planning Commission, and member of the Fairgrounds Plan Steering Committee. He was a proud member of the Alpha Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for over 65 years and received the chapters first Founders Award in 2006. He was also a member of the Booker T. Washington Alumni Association and a charter member of the booster club., His church affiliation was with First Baptist Church, Mahan Street, where he has been a member for over 75 years. "Doc" served as chairperson of the Board of Trustees for many years, the Maintenance and Improvement Committee and the Finance Committee., He was predeceased by his wife, Athalia "Thala" Joyner Richards, in 2007. They had been married for 64 years and she was always the love of his life., He is survived by three children, James Jr. (Ophelia), Ann (Curtis), Patricia Lynn (John); five grandchildren, Andre (Nadine), Steven James (Anjana), Christopher, Chandra, and Jay Edward; three great-grandchildren, Julien and Jacques Kearns and Kiran Joyner Richards; brothers, George C. Richards, and Otis W. Richards (Mary E.), all of Suffolk; and sister, Ernestine Langston of Suffolk., A wake will be held at First Baptist Church, 112 Mahan Street on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. Viewing will be at the church from 5 to 6 p.m. Reflections can be shared at the wake by family and friends followed by Omega's Psi Phi Memorial Service., The homegoing celebration will also be held at First Baptist Church on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at noon. A native of Rockville, Va., and a longtime resident of Williamsburg, he was the son of the late Jerry and Kate Rada., He is survived by his son, Jay G. Rada; his daughter, Mary-Kate Collins and her husband, Jim; his grandson, Benjamin Collins; two brothers, Julian Rada and his wife, Mary Frances and Stuart Rada and his wife, Jean; his former wife, Evelyn Kernan; a special friend, Sue Griggs; a special niece, Lynn Rada; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends., Glenn graduated from Rockville High School and is a 1960 graduate of Randolph-Macon College where he was a member of the Commons Club and the basketball team. In 1968, Glenn founded the James River Equipment and Supply Company and introduced laser technology and trench safety into the construction industry in Virginia. An avid college sports fan and golfer, Glenn spent his retirement years in Kingsmill and enjoyed reading, learning and traveling. APPOMATTOX - Jeanie Mae Stutts Strachan, 84, passed away on Nov. 1, 2009 in Appomattox, Va., She was born on Aug. 5, 1925, in Washington, D.C. Her family moved shortly thereafter to Virginia, settling in the Phoebus area of Hampton on Hope Street. She worked in the Five & Dime in Phoebus and attended Hampton High School, where she met her future husband. Jim and Jeanie were married Oct 15, 1945, and settled in Hampton., Jeanie was a devoted wife and wonderful mother to her three sons. She moved to Appomattox County after her husband's retirement in 1985. Although she enjoyed traveling, she loved coming home to their place out in the country. Jeanie and Jim used to take the boys camping up there for many years, long before a house was ever built on the property. Jeanie certainly appreciated a good joke. She enjoyed all the jokes the family sent her through the years and always took them with her to share with folks everywhere she went. She took great enjoyment in feeding all her birds, especially the hummingbirds that came back every year., She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Leonis Stutts; stepfather, Sam Copeland; brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Margaret Stutts; sister-in-law, Shirley Stutts; grandparents, John and Margaret Mallicott and Leroy Stutts., She is survived by her husband of 64 years, James W. LINDBERG, Joanna Modisett, passed away on October 28, 2009 at 90 years of age of natural causes. Mrs. Lindberg was born April 17, 1919 in Deer Creek, Indiana. The oldest of six children, she graduated from Purdue University. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rae Ann and Jeff Puff; two grandchildren, Adam and Tori Puff; a daughter-in-law, Heather Mazzanti Puff; and three siblings, James Modisett, Barbara Green, and Noah Franklin Modisett. Mrs. Lindberg was a member of the Richmond Women's Club, and Ikebana International. She was a Master Flower Show Judge for the National Council of State Garden Clubs and a member of the DAR. An avid Bridge player and lifelong artist, Mrs. Lindberg's work was recently recognized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for achievement as a senior Virginia artist and was displayed in an exhibition at the General Assembly. SMITH, Kenneth G., slipped into a second life with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 2, 2009. Born May 3, 1937, he was the son of the late William Garland and Mary Eyler Smith of Lynchburg, Va. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Peggy Maddox Smith; three daughters, Karen Smith Gibson, Valerie Smith Fulke of Richmond and Carol G. Smith of Charlottesville; three grandchildren, Kenneth W. Gibson, Joseph L. Gibson and Alexandria T. Fulke; and one son-in-law, Fred Gibson. He is also survived by four brothers and their wives, William and Muriel Smith of Smith Mt. Lake, Va., Patrick and Kathy Smith of Riner, Va., Robert and Faye Smith of Lynchburg, Va., Mark and Sharon Smith of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and one sister, Johanna and her husband, Link White, of Forest, Va. After graduating from E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, Va., he continued his education to be the first in his family to graduate from college. He chose to attend Virginia Military Institute, where he received his BA in Civil Engineering. After serving his country on active duty as well as spending 20 years in the U.S. Army Reserves, he retired with the rank of Major. He retired from the University of Virginia in 2003 as the Director of Facilities Planning and Construction. He valued the continued pursuit of knowledge and while working at UVA, received his Master's Degree in Business Administration from Averett College of Danville, Va. in 1995. Kenneth was a kind and loving father and devoted husband. He loved working with the Key Clubs in and around Virginia while serving in the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville, where he held several positions, one of which was Lt. Governor. He and his wife were also very involved in the Charlottesville Friendship Force, where they welcomed many people from around the world into their home while they visited America. After moving to Lake Monticello, he became an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and enjoyed working with the Coast Guard in keeping the lake safe on busy weekends. He also loved following the UVA Women's Basketball team. He and his wife traveled to Hawaii and around the state to support his favorite team and have attended all home games for over 20 years. He loved his church, Beaverdam Baptist, where he was a devoted member, teaching Sunday school classes, singing in the choir, serving as a deacon and on many committees over the years. A family and friends visitation will be held Thursday, November 5, 2009, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the social hall at Beaverdam Baptist Church located at 1794 Richmond Road, Troy, Va. 22974. Lester A. Rowland MARION, Va. Lester A. Rowland, age 83 passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. He was the son of the late John and Ida Roland of Marion. His brothers, George, Estell, Carl, James and Nathan; and sisters, Grace Crowder and Virgie Hayden, predeceased him. He was a mason and construction supervisor for over 50 years, including designing and building numerous Baptist churches in Virginia. He was a combat veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Anna Iola Hart Rowland; his daughter, DoraLee, and son-in-law, E. Larry Fabian; his three grandchildren, Tammy Pearson Heflin and husband Mark, Jeff Pearson and wife Karen, Kim Pearson Foley and husband Ed Jr.; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley and Bryce Pearson, Amber, Kristen and Shalynn Heflin, and Kayla and Dalton Foley His sisters Shirley Howell of Maryland, Freda Privet of Manassas, Va., Betty McClure of Tennessee, and Rosa Stamper of Marion, survive him. ROBINSON, Lloyd A., "Robbie," Ret. Major U.S. Marine Corps, of Glen Allen, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2009. Lloyd was born on March 12, 1941 in New Bedford, Mass. He was preceded in death by his father, Frederick Robinson; his mother, Faith Tuell Robinson; and his stepmother, Ann Robinson. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Robinson; his three children, Kathy Stamatelos and her husband, Jimmy Stamatelos, Scott Robinson and his wife, Jennifer Robinson, and Paul Robinson; four grandchildren, Ryan Stamatelos, Jeffrey Stamatelos, Christina Stamatelos, and Ella Marie Robinson; and two stepchildren, Bryan Ready and Katherine Ready Reznikov and her husband, Pavel Reznikov. Lloyd's service in the United States Marine Corps spanned 26 years to include a tour of duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis, several combat tours in Vietnam, and work for the Naval Investigative Service, as well as for the Marine Corps counterintelligence (Marine Corps CI) before he retired as a major in 1986. NEWPORT NEWS - On Nov. 1, 2009, at the Gardens at Warwick Forest, Lucish Murray Jr. was called home to be with the Lord after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. Lucish was born on Dec. 19, 1921, in Sumter, S.C., to the late Lucish Murray Sr. and Isabella Murray. He was a WW II veteran and a Masonic member. He retired from Ford Motor Company in Edison, N.J., after 35 years of employment. After his retirement. he still held a representative seat on the UAW's Union Board., Lucish was preceded in death by his sister, Annie; and his brother, James. A native of Paris, Va., she had been a Hampton resident since 1958. Lu had very fond memories from her 20 years as Director of the Fort Monroe Teen Club. She retired in 1985. She also enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren, as well as sewing, reading, antiquing, gardening, cooking and telling stories., She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Hartman Jr.; and a daughter, Diana Marie Bergmann., Survivors include her daughter, Julia Ann Hartman Rea; her son, William L. "Monty" Hartman and his wife, Beverly; her sister, Betty Henry; her brother, Wesley B. "Wes" Shaffer Jr.; eight grandchildren, Shelley Crouch, Stephen Rea, Tina Bergmann, James Bergmann, Paul Hartman, Katy Barnes, Becky Hartman, and Amber Stevens; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was born Aug. 22, 1923. in Warwick County to Charles Otto Becker and Sarah Jane Burnham. Margaret attended Hilton Elementary School, Warwick High School and graduated from Hampton High School with the Class of 1941. Margaret worked as a secretary for N.A.C.A. from 1941 to 1942. Raymond Edell Foster Jr., and Margaret were married on Feb. 14, 1943., She is survived by their five sons, Robert D. Foster, Raymond E. Foster III, William A. Foster, David O. Foster and Stephen L. Foster; and eight grandchildren, Susan Foster Silvus, Tracy A. Foster, Margaret Foster, Elizabeth Foster, Raymond Foster IV, Jacob Foster, Otto Foster, and William Foster; seven great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild as well as many nieces and nephews., Margaret and Raymond owned and operated the Dari Freeze of Jefferson Avenue in Newport News from 1957-1977 and The Cream Scene in Kill Devil Hills, N.C., from 1972-1975. NEWPORT NEWS - Marie A. Riddle, 87, passed away Friday, Oct. 30, 2009., She was born on June 4, 1922, in Bristol Tenn., and was a 1940 graduate of Appalachian High School. She was a longtime resident of Newport News, having lived here for 59 years., Mrs. Riddle was preceded in death by her best friend and beloved husband of 60 years, Hershel E. Marie Cron Wallace

Marie Cron Wallace, quilter and homemaker, died Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center in Culpeper, Virginia., Mrs. Wallace was born to Minerva Marie Cron in Amarillo, Texas, on August 2, 1917., She received a B.A. in Chemistry from Mary Hardin Baylor University in Texas in 1939, and a M.S. in Biochemistry from Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kansas in 1941. After teaching high school math and science in Texas, she moved to Washington, DC in 1942, where she was a metallurgist at the National Bureau of Standards. She met Edward John Wallace there, and they were married on February 16, 1945. They were members of Mount Vernon Place Methodist Church in Washington until they moved to McLean, Virginia in 1955, where they became active members of Trinity United Methodist Church. Mrs. Wallace sang in the choir at both churches. In 2000, Mrs. Wallace moved to Culpeper Virginia to be near her daughters. She was member of Hebron Lutheran Church in Madison until her death., Mrs. Wallace was an avid seamstress and quilter, and designed and completed more than 200 quilts, including annual entries into the Hoffman Challenge from its beginnings until 2006. She was member of the McLean chapter of Quilters Unlimited, and Novum Quilters in Madison., Her husband Edward died October 1, 1997. She is survived by her children Diane Cheryl Heckel, of Madison; David James Wallace and his wife, of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, Patricia Minerva Bullock and her husband, of Newport, Oregon, Kathleen Mollie Edwards and her husband, of Falmouth, Virginia; as well as five grandchildren; Cheryl Heckel Paulson and her husband, of Richmond, Nancy Marie Heckel-Harper and her husband, of Rochester New York, Frederick William Poe Heckel of Charlotte, North Carolina, Christina Lynn Thomas Farree and her husband, of Falmouth, and Robert Allen Thomas of Falmouth; five great-grandchildren, and numerous friends and relatives., The family will receive friends 6:30 until 8 p.m. Friday, November 6, 2009, at Preddy Funeral Home in Madison. Marilyn Rae MATTHEWS "Idgy"

MATTHEWS, Marilyn Rae "Idgy," passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on October 31, 2009 at her home after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Marilyn was a wife, a mother, grandmother, and inspirational friend. Early in her life she enjoyed bike riding, dancing, swimming, shooting skeet, hunting and fishing. Later, she became an avid tennis player, enjoyed all animals and several other outdoor activities such as bird watching and riding motorcycles. Marilyn was also a fan of the Washington Redskins and Pittsburgh Steelers. Marilyn grew up in New Salem, Pa. near Uniontown, Pa., where she was a Girl Scout, a member of the International Order of the Rainbow Girls and member of the Eastern Star. Marilyn migrated to Washington, D.C. and then moved to and made a home in Richmond, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Inez Coffman (Loughran); and husband, Barry E. Matthews. She is survived by her sister, Marianne; her sons, Brandon and Brett and his wife, Donna; grandchildren, Dalton and Hunter; many devoted friends; as well as her loyal and faithful companion cat, HoBo. She will be missed by so many, but will now and evermore enjoy peace. A special thank you to all who contributed so much in the last days; you made an example of what an ending should be and defined true friendship. Mary was born in Minneapolis, where she graduated from the Convent of Visitation School. She attended Newton College of the Sacred Heart in Massachusetts, and graduated from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn. In 1970, she married the love of her life, Roy Richardson, who preceded her in death in 2008., In addition to raising two children and three stepchildren in Edina, Minn., Mary enjoyed travel, golf, tennis, bowling, and volunteer work. She was the first woman to serve on the Board of Directors of the Edina Country Club., In 1992, Mary and Roy retired to Ford's Colony, Williamsburg, Va. She was an active member of the Ford's Colony Ladies' Golf Association, where she served in a variety of roles, including Tournament Director and President. She also served for three years as Director of the Ford's Colony Country Club Membership Association. She was a longtime member of St. Bede's Catholic Church, and later was received as a member of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church., Mary is survived by her son, Roman Richardson and his wife, Joanne; daughter, Alexis Guilbert and her husband, Shelby; granddaughter, Piper Camille Guilbert; stepdaughter, Beth Richardson and her children, Ian Allison and Paige Allison; stepdaughter Jessica Eubanks and her husband, Charles and their daughter, Perry Lee; stepson, Adam Richardson and his wife, Mina; her brother, William R. ELLIOTT, Mary Pauline "Polly," of Sandston, departed this life on November 3, 2009. She was preceded in death by James E. Elliott "Jim," her husband of 62 years. She is survived by her children, James Monroe Elliott and his wife, Janis; Charles Thomas Elliott and his wife, Karen; Michael Barry Elliott and his wife, Marjorie; Mary Elizabeth Elliott Harris, and Kurt Muirhead Hanger and his wife, Patricia; her grandchildren, John Hersey, Christopher Elliott, Jonathan Elliott, Alexander Harris, Jennifer Elliott, Marcus Elliott, Sofia Elliott, and Ashley Hanger; her great-grandchildren, M. Chatman Elliott, M. Dylane Elliott and Taylor Hanger. She is also survived by three siblings, Georgia, Julia and Earl. She was an avid sports enthusiast who in high school excelled at softball (state champions), basketball and pole vaulting. While living in Highland Springs, she coached for many years a girls' softball team with the Lassie League. She was a past president of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary Post 144 and worked for decades for Chuck's Market in Highland Springs, Sandston and Providence Forge. An enthusiastic bowler, she bowled on a league well into her mid-70s. At home she prided herself on her irises and her ability to attract humming birds. Her love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was reflected in the hundreds of photographs lining her den walls. She and her husband were known for their annual Brunswick Stew event held for many years for family and friends. Her family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where a service will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009 at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Washington Memorial Park alongside her beloved husband. Mildred was proud to have been born in Andrew Jackson's home in Lexington, Va. on February 4, 1928 to her parents, William and Lucille Clark Engleman. She was preceded in death by her son, John E.; a sister, Jane E. Curley; and two brothers, William and Tinsley Engleman. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Laurence J. Del Papa; six children, Therese Hall and husband, David, Laurence Del Papa II, Paul Del Papa and wife, Kathy, David Del Papa, Charles Del Papa and wife, Rebecca, and Cynthia Shaughnessy; and grandchildren, Matthew, Bennett, Kimberly, Brittney, Bryan, Nathan and wife, Deborah, Elise, Nicholas, Daniel, Meredith and husband, Justin, Tony, Amelia, Lillian, Margaret, Andrew and Kristen; and seven great-grandchildren. Mildred graduated from Johnston-Willis School of Nursing working in the field of Obstetrics. In her retirement years, she was an avid reader and Bridge player and Mildred's greatest love was spending time with her family and many friends. A native of Newport News, Richard retired from the United States Marine Corp after 20 years of service and also from the U.S. Civil Service. Richard proudly served his country in the Korean War and several overseas tours, including Romania, Japan, and Lebanon. He was awarded the Purple Heart and other various medals. Mr. Norris moved to Newport News from Dunn, N.C., in 1951, and attended Warwick High School. In his junior year he joined the Naval Reserves and after school went on active duty to fulfill his military commitment., In 1957 he worked for the Bank of Warwick where he became head teller of the Parkview branch. He also became head teller with the Bank of Hampton Roads., In 1960 he worked for his neighbor and good friend, Bill Andrews, with the Commission of Revenue for nine years. In 1969 he formed Norris Amusements. He operated the first moon walks on the east coast and later added a putt putt. Mr. Norris opened Norris Mobile Markees, a portable sign rental business in 1970. He operated this business for 38 years until he retired Dec. 31, 2007., An avid golfer, he served on the Williamsburg Board of Directors for many years. GRAFTON - To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. Our beloved father, grandfather, brother, and uncle's time to die occurred on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, around noon at Mary Immaculate Hospital. God knew that our beloved, after spending the last year of his life in and out of the hospital and as a resident of Saint Francis Nursing Center, had endured enough pain and that it was time for him to be delivered from his suffering., "Mack" as he was called by most was born and raised in Grafton. He was the son of the late Winfred Sr., and Ethel Harrod Shields. At a very early age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior, and united with the Grafton Baptist Church., He was married to the late Marjorie Tolliver for nearly 50 years. That union produced two sons and a daughter. Mack was a hard worker and many days he worked from sun up to sun down operating a trash route while working full time at Cheatham Annex. He was a serious, no nonsense person., He was a member of Light of the Valley Masonic Lodge of Grafton, Va., for many, many years., Mack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marjorie; his parents, four brothers, Herman, Winfred Jr., Clarence, and Thomas; and two sisters, Rosetta and Elizabeth., He leaves to mourn his passing two sons, Robert Jr., of Newport News and Herman (Kelly) of El Paso, Texas; a daughter, Virgie Peterson of Williamsburg; three very dear granddaughters, Patricia Howard of Charles City, LaDawn Shields of Smithfield, and Diana Shields of Newport News; two close grandsons, Terry Howard Jr. of Richmond, and Antone Shields of Smithfield; three sisters, Frances Williams and Annie Jones-Ellison (Rufus) of Hampton, and Alice Langford (Harold) of Newport News, who was overseer of his care and affairs for the past year; and a stepdaughter, Joyce McCree (Mack) of Grafton. Others to mourn his passing are numerous other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, a special friend, Beatrice, and a host of other relatives and friends., The family extends special thanks to the staff of Saint Francis Nursing Center for the love and comfort given to their loved one and also to the dedicated staff of the Mary Immaculate ICU., A funeral service will be held noon Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Grafton Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas William Willoughby and his wife, Lucille and Harry Franklin Willoughby and his wife, Helen; and by one sister, Louise Willoughby Wright and her husband, Charles, all formerly of Unionville., Ruby attended Mary Washington College and graduated from the University of Virginia. She taught in Prince William for one year and in Orange County for 42 years. She was a former member of the Orange County retired Teachers Association and of the Orange Business and Professional Women's Club. She also was a lifelong member of the Unionville Christian Church., Survivors include two nieces, Lillian W. Goodwin and her husband, Phil, of Orange, and Patricia W. LUCK, Virginia Chandler "Jenny," 78, of Sandston, Va., died on Wednesday, November 4, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Bennett Luck Sr.; grandson, Cameron James Luck; and four brothers, Tom, Bill, Frank, and Bob Chandler. Jenny was born in Richmond, Va., on May 18, 1931, the daughter of the late Thomas E. Chandler and Rosa C. Mimms. She is survived by two sons, T. Ben Luck Jr. (Virginia), and Michael E. Luck (Tawnya); two sisters, Josephine Jordan and Evelyn Newman; four grandchildren, Tom (Bre), Andy (Krissy), Tanner, and Michael E.; numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and friends. Jenny was a lifelong member of St. John's Catholic Church, and a member of American Legion Post 144. She was very active in her church and community. Littlejohn of Suffolk and Lurline Wilson of Memphis, Tenn; brothers-in-law, George Eley Sr. of Zuni and William Rountree of Suffolk; two godchildren, Josiah Allen of Suffolk and Dameron (Cle) Jones of Gaithersburg, Md.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends., He dedicated his life to educating and assisting others. Some of his accomplishments include forming a local Chapter of JETS (Junior Engineering Technical Society) at Suffolk High School in 1982; getting Suffolk High School involved with CHROME (Cooperating Hampton Roads Organization for Minorities in Engineering, Inc.) in 1983; finding employment at various engineering companies for CHROME students; being selected as the CHROME Sponsor of the Year; being nominated by CHROME for the National Teacher Award for Community Service; being selected as Suffolk Teacher of the Year in 1993; being selected as Lakeland High School Teacher of the Year from 1999-2000; and teaching in the Suffolk Public School System from 1969 to 1973 and from 1975 until retirement in 2003. Born on Nov. 21, 1944, in Worcester, Mass., he graduated from North High School, earned an Associates degree from Quinsigamond Community College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Worcester State College both located in Worcester. He worked as a first-class lineman for New England Power Service Company before retiring to Williamsburg in 1991.He served six years in the Massachusetts Army National Guard and was honorably discharged with a rank of PFC E-3., While living in Massachusetts, Bill was an active volunteer at the Old Sturbridge Village Research Library where he assisted with the conservation of rare books and manuscripts., Mr. MacQueston and his wife were an early service usher team at St. Stephen Lutheran Church., An avid golfer, Bill was a member of the Tuesday morning Amoco group at Deer Run. Bill was recognized by the Virginia Golf Association as a hole-in-one recipient several years ago – an award that brought him much joy. He belonged to the Williamsburg James City County Recreation Center and enjoyed his many friends during workouts. Bill had a passion for classic cars and music from the 1950's. He loved cruising to Bermuda and throughout the Caribbean with his wife. Bill was a deeply devoted husband and caring friend., Mr. MacQueston was preceded in death by his parents, Harold J. MacQueston Sr. and Alice (Farrell) MacQueston; and his brothers, Kenneth and Harold J. MacQueston Jr., Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife and best friend of 36 years, Janis C. Mr. Wilson was a faithful and dedicated member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Windsor, Va., where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board. In addition, he taught Sunday school and was a member of the Finance Committee and the Board of Trustees.
