Adeline Y. Skorupa BIG STONE GAP, Va. Adeline Yakubowski Skorupa, 95, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap following a brief illness. She was born in Tom's Creek, Va., and was a longtime resident of Derby, Va., for 45 years; Appalachia, Va., for nine years and the last 23 years in Big Stone Gap. Adeline was known to everyone as "Mimi". She leaves behind a lifelong legacy as a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is lovingly remembered by family, friends, and the community throughout as being an inspiration to those around her for her strength and family values. She has been a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Appalachia and Big Stone Gap for the past 73 years and has served in many different capacities. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Thomas H. Skorupa; and by her son, Dr. Thomas E. Skorupa; by parents, Martin and Magdalene Yakubowski; by two sisters and two brothers. Surviving are: daughter, Dorothy S. Isaac and son-in-law, Robert Isaac of Norton, Va.; daughter, Elizabeth S. Jordan of Newport News, Va.; son, Raymond Skorupa and daughter-in-law, Judith Green Skorupa of Pelham, N.Y.; son, Phil Skorupa and daughter-in-law, Patsy Nash Skorupa of Newport News, Va.; and daughter-in-law, Jeanne Barnhart Skorupa of Newport News, Va.; 17 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and caregiver, Cathy Craft of Derby, Va. Visitation will be held at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home in Appalachia from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov.8th. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at the Scared Heart Catholic Church in Big Stone Gap at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 9th, with Reverend Timothy Drake officiating. Margaret M. Cafferty KILL DEVIL HILLS - Margaret M. Cafferty, matriarch of the Cafferty family, passed on and went to join her friends and family in heaven on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas A. Cafferty; her mother and father, Elizabeth and David McClunn; her brother, the Right Rev. Monsignor Justin McClunn; and her daughter, Deborah Cafferty White. She is survived by her sons, Thomas D. Cafferty and wife Debra of Great Falls, Va., and Timothy M. Cafferty of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; her grandchildren, Lauren and Stephanie Cafferty of Great Falls, Justin, Connor, MacKenzie, Sinclaire and Laine Cafferty of Kitty Hawk, Katherine, Margaret and Ashley White of Lynchburg, Va.; and a host of other relatives and friends. Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the granddaughter of famed New York Senator Garth Cronin who was the largest bridge and tunnel contractor in New York in the early 1900s. Marge came from the top society of New York. She graduated from Dumbarton College in Washington, D.C., with a master's degree before making her way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina with her husband where she partnered with her Tom on many successful businesses including Kitty Hawk Realty and Rentals. After Tom's passing in 1974, Marge became one of the first female company owners on the Outer Banks as she continued to grow the company to great success that has now spanned for more than 45 years. She was an active member of the local Board of Realtors and served on the organization's board of directors for several years until her retirement. She also was active in the Dare County League of Women Voters, a noted patron of charitable causes, and one of the founding members of the Outer Banks Catholic Parish. There will be a visitation at Twiford's Colony Chapel, 500 Budleigh St., Manteo on Sunday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. with a wake at 6:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, with Rite of Christian burial to follow at 3 p.m. in the Calvary Cemetery in Richmond, Va. Charlotte spent her years raising her children and serving in the churches always by her husband's side., Charlotte had an amazing, loving personality and it showed in everyone she came in contact with. Her loss will be felt in the community at Riverside Convalescent Center for a long time. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Robert Clyde Booker; and one granddaughter, Crystal Lynn Baker. As a young woman she attended National Business College in Roanoke, where she worked for 40 years as a secretary for the Appalachian Power Company. In 1976 she married Staley Clements, of Christiansburg, who preceded her in death in 1999. In their two decades together they enjoyed a number of pursuits, especially traveling, music, community work and an extended network of friends and family in the New River Valley and beyond. Betty had a bright and cheerful manner; she kept "on the Sunny Side." She was a loving and caring grandmother who enjoyed making a child feel special with attention, kind words and gifts. Donna Robinson Poe MARION, Va. Donna Robinson Poe, age 77, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Smyth County Community Hospital. She was born Nov. 23, 1931, in Austin, Texas, to the late Carl and Nancy McLeod Robinson. She grew up in the Washington D.C. and Chevy Chase, Md., area, where she attended Chevy Chase High School. She continued her education at the Greenbrier Junior College in Lewisburg, W. Va., and graduated from the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. Donna was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the United Methodist Women and devoted to delivering food to the sick and shut-ins. She was instrumental in forming the Association of Retarded Children and was very active in their operation, as well, as the operations of the Smyth IDC. She loved playing tennis and competing. She won several club championships and county tournaments. Donna was also an avid Bridge player, belonging to several clubs in the Marion area. In her later years, she enjoyed surf fishing on the coast of the Outer Banks, North Carolina and Florida. She was a charter member of the Lifetime Wellness Center, where she loved to be; staying active and visiting with her many friends as well as making new ones. She is survived by her husband Gordon R. Poe of Marion, Va.; two daughters, Carol Poe of Marion, Va., and Ann Lee DeSanto of Galax, Va.; one son, Mac Poe and wife Melissa of Marion, Va.; one sister, Nancy Dorman of Chevy Chase, Md.,; and five grandchildren, Sarah DeSanto, Allison DeSanto, Erica Poe, Andrea Poe and Heather Poe; several nieces and nephews also survive. Thrift M.D., who she was married to for 55 years; and by her daughter, Suzanne Thrift Johnson. Mrs. Thrift was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Richmond and participated in many activities in the church. She is survived by her sons, George N. Thrift Jr. of Richmond, Va., J. Barry Thrift of Cincinnati, Ohio and Don W. Thrift of Chesapeake, Va.; and son-in-law, Thomas W. Johnson of Boston, Mass.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Thrift, in addition to raising four children, volunteered her time as a member of the Women's Board of Richmond Eye Hospital and served as a resident for two years. She was also a member of the Tuckahoe Woman's Club for many years and a longtime breast cancer survivor, who also volunteered her time to comfort and counsel other survivors in area hospitals. Memorial services will be held on Monday, November 9 at First Presbyterian Church, 4602 W. Cary Street Rd. at 2 p.m. Private graveside burial at Hollywood Cemetery will precede the memorial service. Our beloved angel, Emily D. Beverly, 55, of Charlottesville, was called by God to join her parents on Thursday, November 5, 2009. Emily graduated from Lane High School and spent her life touching other people's lives. She cared for and watched over all of her elderly neighbors until their deaths and had helped her sister with her mother in law until she got sick. Emily never knew a stranger and was loved by all. She would share her grapes, figs and tomatoes with anyone. BAUDER, Frederick Wharton, of Richmond, Virginia and Miami, Florida, died peacefully on October 27, 2009. He was born in Miami, Florida on March 27, 1926, the only child of the late John F.Bauder and Mildred Wharton Bauder of Ohio. He is survived by his only child, Page Wharton Bauder of Richmond, Va. Fred Bauder was a member of Miami Pioneers, the first generation born in Miami, Florida. He spoke glowingly of growing up in Miami and of life-long friends from Miami High School, where he was a student leader, graduating in three years. He joined the Navy V-12 program at UNC at Chapel Hill, and enjoyed life as President of SAE Fraternity, yearbook editor and member of the Order of the Grail, graduating in 1946. He had fond memories of working for his father's sightseeing boat business in Miami after college. He was a graduate of Harvard Business School, Class of 1949. He moved to Richmond, Virginia to work for Thalhimers Department Stores where he met his former wife, Betty Bunnell Bauder of Richmond. His business career continued at Miller Manufacturing, then as Director of Purchasing for A.H. Robins Pharmaceuticals for 15 years, and finally reaching his goal of retiring at age 55 from Virginia Power. Mr. Bauder was an original founder of the Fan District Association in 1961 and served as President, living in the Fan for over 50 years. A life-long sailor, he was a former member of the Potomac River Sailing Assoc., and Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami. He was a loyal member of First Unitarian Church, having served as Treasurer and on the Finance Committee. Throughout his life, his passions ranged from designing and building contemporary wood furniture, listening to classical and folk music, studying U.S. history, pursuing educational travel and genealogy research. His ongoing love of nature and gardening was fully expressed in his retirement years, dividing each year between Richmond and Miami. He joined the Virginia Grape Grower's Assoc., starting a vineyard in Louisa County, and in the winter, returned to his family home in Coconut Grove, Miami, pursuing a dream of planting experimental walnut and mahogany groves and fruit crops. He enjoyed a varied group of friends at "Happy Times", his Wednesday Breakfast Group, and over twenty years of Thursday evenings at the Robin Inn. In the final months of his life, he prayed to accept the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 12, 2009, 3 p.m. at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 5200 Grove Avenue. Interment will be in Miami, Florida. EMDE, J.C. Mason, "Red," died November 4, 2009 at age 90. Red courageously battled cancer for over two years, never allowing the disease to slow him down. Red's life experiences were vast. At 13, he played trombone in the National Guard Band. His expenses at Freed Hardeman College were covered by directing the college band and years later returned as a math teacher. Red's accomplishments with the trombone led him to attend Pepperdine University, where he became close friends with George Pepperdine, and continued playing band with the University of South California. Moving to North Carolina, he played with the N.C. State Symphony while teaching music in Winston- Salem, Mt. Airy, and Elkin, as well as organizing several high school bands. Red had his own dance band with Moe Purtill. Red left music behind and began his career at Boeing where he was an Industrial Engineer and Project Manager. After his marriage to Doe, he became a real estate broker and formed their company Redoe Realty. Red also, an ordained minister, performed many marriages and christenings of family members and friends. Red is survived by his wife, Doe; and children, Rusty and Sandy Emde, Terry Beaber, Trudie and Tom Pitkin, Kris Taylor and John Bucher, Tracie Taylor and Mark Justis; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Angie Locke. Red will be remembered for his humor, his patience, his wisdom, his eternal optimism, and the love he felt for his family and friends. Grindstaff was born Sept. 2, 1946, in Henry County to Cameron Andrew Grindstaff and Blanche Reynolds Grindstaff. He worked as the custodian at Fieldale Baptist Church for 17 years, was a trader and buyer of cattle and livestock for a number of years, and also did carpentry work. MANN, John E. Sr., age 73, of Midlothian, was reunited with his family in Heaven on Saturday, November 7, 2009. STELBASKY, John Steven, 58, lovingly remembered as Johnny, departed this life to be with the Lord on Friday, October 30, 2009. He was the only child of the late Julie Agnes and John George Stelbasky Sr. Raised in Norfolk, Johnny came to Richmond in 2004 to work for St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Within the church, he found a family of friends and took great pleasure in devoting his time to them. He will be greatly missed by Robert "Butch" Griner, M.C. Yarbourgh, Linda Pitts, and all the staff and parishioners at St. Paul's. Special thanks to all of the people who helped Johnny through his last few difficult months of illness. She became Walter O'Connor's "bride" on July 25, 1942, and they were married for 67 wonderful years., Jo was the mother of Candice Rice and the late Thomas O'Connor and the mother-in-law to Kenneth Rice and Jean O'Connor., She is survived by five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Jo was the sister of Eleanor Christie and the late Margaret Garrison., She volunteered for 21 years at Martha Jefferson Hospital, gave often to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and was an active member of the Catholic Church., Jo's motto was "Live. Dr. Karen E. Holt, 54, of Knoxville, passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. She was an assistant vice president of the Institute for Public Service at the University of Tennessee., A native of Paducah, Kentucky, Dr. Holt spent the majority of her career fulfilling her passion for public service, civil rights, and civic engagement. The scope and diversity of Dr. Holt's work was extraordinary. Before coming to the Institute for Public Service in 2008, Dr. Holt had previously served as an associate general counsel at University of Tennessee from 1985 until 1995, led the University of Virginia's Office of Equal Opportunity Programs from 1997 until 2003, was an attorney with the Civil and Civil Rights Divisions of the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. from 1983 until 1985, served as executive director of Project Pericles in New York from 2003 until 2005, and was director of the Fanning Institute at the University of Georgia from 2006 until 2008. Dr. Holt was also an impassioned teacher in courses on American Government and Administrative Law at University of Tennessee, and in the Law of Higher Education at University of Virginia., While serving as associate general counsel at University of Tennessee, Dr. Holt completed a doctorate in Political Science, concentrating in Public Law, Public Administration, and Methodology. Her dissertation research culminated in a book, When Officials Clash- Implementation of the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act, published by Praeger Press in 1998. She authored papers published in the Journal of Family Law and the Tennessee Law Review, among others., Dr. Holt's interest in improving equal opportunity policy led her to accept the position as Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs at University of Virginia in 1997. In collaboration with her staff and university faculty, Dr. Holt revised EEO policies, procedures and outreach to enhance equality and access throughout the university. Describing her time at University of Virginia, one of her colleagues wrote: "During our years working together, her wisdom and kindness meant the most to me; she taught me about coping, about strength and about hope. We are still building on the foundation she created at the EOP. Her impact on the University was extraordinary." Karen was honored at University of Virginia's EOP Champion Awards ceremony on November 2, 2009., After building the EOP programs at University of Virginia, Dr. Holt became interested in broader educational policy and accepted an offer to become the first Executive Director of Project Pericles in New York in 2003. About her service to Project Pericles, Eugene M. Lang wrote: "Karen was the inaugural Executive Director of Project Pericles, and we could not have asked for anyone better. She helped make the mission of Project Pericles - to encourage and facilitate commitments by colleges and universities to include social responsibility and participatory citizenship as essential elements of their educational programs - come alive, and her energy, wisdom, and interpersonal skills fostered the development of significant contacts and warm relationships with colleges and universities and with leaders in philanthropy, education, and the social service sector.", Dr. Holt began her career with a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, working as a park ranger and later a park naturalist at Sam A. Baker State Park in Missouri, where she earned the nickname "Mother Nature" from her co-workers. She was the first female naturalist in the state of Illinois. She often surprised her later colleagues in law and public policy by her knowledge of animal and plant natural history and biology., Dr. Holt's great love of nature remained a constant throughout her life; special pleasures were walking in the woods, hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains, and being near water. She cared deeply for animals and maintained an ever-changing menagerie of cats, dogs, ferrets and fish. During her time living and working in New York, a pigeon eventually nicknamed "Rusty" came to visit Karen every day, sitting on the ledge outside her office in downtown Manhattan, and becoming a regular character in the office. With her beloved yellow Labrador, Honey Bee, she recently had begun to kayak the rivers near her home in Knoxville., She was an incomparable friend, colleague, and mentor, caring for others in every community in which she lived., Dr. Holt received a B.S. in 1976 from the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), a J.D. (cum laude) in 1983 from the Brandeis School of Law, University of Louisville, and Ph.D. in Political Science in 1995 from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She was a member of the Tennessee Bar Association as well as the District of Columbia, Georgia, and Virginia Bar Associations. Dr. Holt also held memberships in the Athens (Georgia) Rotary Club, Georgia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives, Georgia Economic Developers Association, the Southern Consortium of University Public Service Organizations and the Jeannette Rankin Foundation. HUDGINS, Kathleen Elizabeth "Kitty," of Richmond, passed away November 5, 2009 at the Retreat Hospital in Richmond following a long illness. At her side was her devoted niece, Dee-Dee Shue of Powhatan. Kathleen was born October 13, 1927 at Olden Place, near Crewe. She retired from the City of Richmond Department of Parks and Recreation after 38 years of service. Over the years, she also worked part-time at Sears on Broad Street, the Mosque in wardrobe and make-up and typed for many professors at Richmond Professional Institute. All things in nature interested Kathleen. Cats were the love of her life and she leaves behind her beloved, Suzy, who has been adopted to a great home. An advocate of young people, she always preferred the company of those much younger than herself. Kathleen is survived by her sister, Anne Hundley Childress of Blackstone; eight nieces and four nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas Warriner and Tizy Moore Hudgins; brothers, Robert, Boo-Boo, Petsi and Jim. Family and friends have hundreds of memories of beach trips, walks in the woods, picnics at Big Rock, family reunions, late night phone calls, and her connection to us all. You're home with Mama. WILLIAMSBURG - Kathleen Mary Robinson passed away on Nov. 1, 2009, in Williamsburg, Va. Several members of her loving family were with her at that special time., Kathleen was born April 15, 1928, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of William and Carrie Wills. She graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1945 and from Michigan State College in 1950., She married Jack K. Robinson on Sept. 12, 1950. She shared her husband's career in the United States Air Force for 25 years and they moved 14 times before retiring to Williamsburg in 1975., Kathleen and Jack were blessed with four children. Kathleen always provided a loving and safe home for her growing family. She was proud of her role as homemaker and Mother to her children, and considered herself blessed to see them grow into successful and prosperous adults with loving families of their own., She leaves behind her grieving husband of 59 years, her children, their spouses, and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, John F. Krabbe. She is survived by her two daughters, Virginia K. Lewis and her husband, Andrew, and Janet K. Wesley (W.F.) Martin, 83, of Bassett, Va., died on Friday, November 6, 2009, at Moorehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C. Born on August 30, 1926, in Stanleytown, he was the son of the late Stephen A. Martin and the late Estelle Fulcher Martin. W.F. was also preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Spencer Martin; son, Wesley "Donnie" Martin; brother, James Ralph Martin; and sister, Annie Mae Turner. He was a member of Valley Drive Baptist Church for many years. W.F. was in the United States Army during World War II. Surviving is his wife, Loma Martin, of the home; two sons, Timothy D. Martin, of Richmond, and Daryl B. Martin, of Bassett, President and Co-owner of Bassett Funeral Service. Also surviving are two stepsons, Steve Mitchell, of Bassett, and Roger Mitchell, of Bassett; and one stepdaughter, Patsy Hopkins. . He continued to serve his country as a civil servant drawing on his experience with airplanes. It was his love for the outdoors that drew him to his wife's family farm in Troutville following his retirement where he worked his garden, volunteered for the VA Hospital, and bowled many years with the OLD TIMERS league. He enjoyed a good meal, a good laugh, a good book and a good movie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur W. and Florence Nelson; and his brother, Allen Nelson of Illinois. SCHULZ, Otto Siebert, 75, of Richmond, passed away on Friday, November 6, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Alice Livermore Schulz. Otto, fondly known as "Big Boss" and "Paw Paw", was born in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. His career in land surveying was spent with Stone & Webster and then on to VEPCO (Dominion Power) until his retirement in 1994. Otto is survived by two daughters, Kristina Schulz Murphy and husband, Joe, of Nags Head, N.C., and Katherine Schulz White and husband, Matthew, of Midlothian, Va.; three grandchildren, Matthew Ryan Murphy, Erin Elizabeth Murphy and Patrick Holters White. Otto also leaves behind a brother, John Schulz of Hallandale Beach, Florida; as well as his best friend since childhood, John Schlittler of Walpole, Massachusetts. Otto adored his wife, kids and grandkids as well as the "Outer Banks" of North Carolina. He enjoyed watching CNBC with the sound off and the closed-caption feature activated. He spent hours a day perusing "The Wall Street Journal". His hobbies included repairing surveying transits and instruments; woodworking; saltwater fishing; following Washington Redskins football (even in their lean years) and NASCAR racing. In the early morning of November 2, 2009, LCDR Arthur Louis Ruedisueli, USCG, retired, passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer for the past eight years. He fought so hard to live, enjoying life way beyond his prognosis. Born on Thursday, April 21, 1938, in Detroit, Mich., Art was the only child of the late James Charles Ruedisueli and Genevieve Lewin Ruedisueli. He attended St. Clair High School, St. Clair Shores, Mich., and graduated from the United States Coast Guard Officer's Candidate School, Yorktown, Va., in 1964. He also received an Associates Degree from Virginia Western Community College in 1995., A seventh generation seaman, Art proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard for 25 years. He enlisted three days after his eighteenth birthday in 1956 and rose through the ranks to become Commanding Officer of his own ship, the USCGC MARIPOSA, a 180 foot buoy tender, as Lieutenant Commander. He and his ship cleaned and re-set buoys in the summer and broke ice in the winter from Detroit, Mich., to the Saint Lawrence River. During his career, he served as Quartermaster on the USCGC MESQUITE, BUTTONWOOD, and WOODTHRUSH. As a LTJG, he was on the USCGC NETTLE and the USCGC BLACKHAW as XO. On the USCGC IRIS as a LT, he was also XO. His assignments took him to Honolulu, Astoria, Guam, the Philippine Islands, Cleveland, Toledo, Duluth, Yorktown, and Sault Ste. Marie. Art completed flight training at Pensacola, but chose to stay in surface operations. He did two tours of duty in Viet Nam, re-setting channel markers in the Mekong River after the Viet Cong would change them, trying to sink American ships, and helping to evacuate citizens from Saigon, during 1967 to 1968. Art's last assignment in the Coast Guard was as Director, Coast Guard Marine Environmental Protection Program, Great Lakes Region, Cleveland, Ohio, where he managed a $35 million fund used to clean up oil and hazardous substances on the entire Great Lakes and supervised a staff of 300 personnel. Service medals, commendations, citations, and decorations awarded Art include: Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal with Combat 'V,' Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Republic of Viet Nam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, Republic of Viet Nam Civil Actions Unit Citation, Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal, Coast Guard Expert Rifle Medal, Coast Guard Expert Pistol Medal, Officer Cutterman Insignia (Permanent) and the Commanding Officer Command at Sea Insignia., Never a person to sit still, after Art retired from military life, he worked at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant as a procedure writer/illustrator for nine years and then at Hecht's until he was diagnosed with cancer in 2001. He was an accomplished woodworker and built several items, passing them along to friends. Art built and flew many radio-controlled airplanes in the Roanoke Valley. There wasn't anything he could not draw and then make., While in Hawaii, Art was a Scoutmaster in the Aloha Council. He collected stamps from the time he was a small child and helped many Scouts start their own collections. He was a Companion of the Military Order of the World Wars, Roanoke, Va., serving as Vice Commander. Art belonged to Cavite City Masonic Lodge, Philippines, and was a former member of Carrie Lee Chapter No. 108, Order of the Eastern Star., Art was a Life Member of the National Rifle Association and a member of Ridge Rifle Club, Fincastle, Va., where he enjoyed serving as Range Officer and scoring shooting matches. He was also a member of the Virginia Shooting Sports Association. Art finally got the 500-yard shot on a prairie dog hunt with his brother-in-law on a 2004 hunt in New Mexico., Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 26 years, Janina Utt Ruedisueli; and his children, David Ruedisueli and his fiancee, Cindy Beyler, of Michigan, Daniel Ruedisueli, of Pennsylvania, Deborah Ruedisueli Compo, of Michigan, Dawn Ruedisueli Heathman, of Washington state, Cavalier Anton (Tony) Romagnolo, who predeceased him, November 29, 2008, and Cristina (Tina) Romagnolo Gorman and her husband, Mike Gorman, of Richmond, Va. Peyton O. Wiley, Sr. Peyton O. Wiley, Sr. 80, passed away on Friday, November 6, 2009 at Virginia Baptist Hospital following a year long decline in health. He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Clara S. Wiley and his parents, Cloyde and Margaret Wiley. He is survived by his two children a daughter, Sandra (Sandy) W. Kinzer and her husband, John and a son, Peyton (Pat) Wiley, Jr. and his wife, Janice, all of Lynchburg. He is also survived by two grandchildren Steven Kinzer and his wife, Misty of Rustburg and Kelly K. Lefler and her husband, Matt of Fredericksburg. The most recent delights of his life were his great-grandchildren, MaKayla Kinzer and Katelyn Kinzer. He was also happily awaiting the arrival of another great-grandchild in the spring with Kelly and Matt. Peyton deeply loved and took pride in all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and they all brought him immense happiness. Also surviving Peyton are his buddies for life, his two brothers, Cloyde Wiley, Jr. and his wife, Ethel of Urbanna, John (Ivan) Wiley and his wife, Harriet of Lynchburg and his extended family and friends. He is also survived by a special friend, Corene Carey. Peyton and Clara enjoyed many trips to the beach alone and with their family. They also enjoyed trips to various places around the world. They warmly embraced their large extended family and they enjoyed any event that allowed them to gather together, laugh, and reminisce. Peyton was a long-time member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church. Peyton served in the army and trained in Fort Carson, Colorado for mountain combat. He worked for many years as a building inspector with the City of Lynchburg. After his retirement, Peyton enjoyed years of good health which he spent participating in his favorite hobbies of hunting at his cabin and fishing along the coast of North Carolina. Some of his favorite memories included hunting at the cabin with his father, son, brothers, cousins and nephews. He loved beach trips with his family and relaxing on the balcony looking out over the sand dunes. He also enjoyed eating out with family and friends. He was kind, caring and generous to others. For the last year of his life, Peyton experienced a steady decline in health. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Shawn Hayes and the physicians at Lynchburg General Hospital and Virginia Baptist Hospital for their care and support. The family would especially like to thank Dr. David Leffke and the nurses and staff at Seven Hill Urology for their support and pro-active treatment as he battled cancer over 35 years. He attributed his survival to their efforts and the grace of God. The family deeply appreciates the extraordinary care and compassion given to Peyton by the emergency room staff at Lynchburg General, the Lynchburg City Fire Dept. EMTs, the nurses who cared for him on the fourth floor of LGH, the acute rehab center at VBH and the gentle loving hospice nurses of Hospice of the Hills, especially our Loretta. During the last two weeks of his life, Peyton and his family were ministered to by angels of mercy disguised as the nursing staff of the skilled care/palliative care unit at Virginia Baptist Hospital. We did not call that they did not quickly respond and they went out of their way to tenderly minister to us all. We also wish to thank the occupational, physical and speech therapists at both VBH and LGH hospitals, and at Gentiva Home Health Care for their attention to his rehab needs. Thank you also to the home health providers of Home Instead, especially Justin Ward, who went the extra mile to provide for Peyton's comfort and care during the last 6 weeks of his life. We have been so blessed to have had such attentive and competent health care providers for our loved one. We also want to thank our family and friends for your support and love over the past year. You are all blessings to us. A celebration of Peyton's life will take place on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 11:00 am at Tharp Funeral Home on Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg with Rev. Becky Cloud officiating. Internment will occur following the service at Fort Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 7:00-8:30 pm today, November 8, 2009 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. At other times, the family will be at his residence. BOND, Veronica Scearce, 95, of Richmond, passed away Friday, November 6, 2009. She was the widow of Dr. William R. Bond, and a member of Ginter Park Baptist Church. She retired at age 83 from H.W. Goodwyn & Sons, and was involved in Richmond real estate for over 60 years. She is survived by her daughter, Valerie B. Hall and son-in-law, Dr. L. Thomas Hall III; son, William R. Bond and daughter-in-law, Alice Lane Bond; four grandchildren; a sister, Opal Scearce Chandler; sister-in-law, Dorothy Scearce. Margaret E. Wilkins CHESAPEAKE - Margaret E. Wilkins, 83, passed away Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at her home. Born in Eure, N.C., Margaret was retired from General Foam and Plastic after 25 years, where she was a supervisor. She was a member of Broadmoor Church of Christ. Margaret was the widow of Herman V. Wilkins Jr. and is survived by two sons, Thomas H. Wilkins and John W. Wilkins, both of Chesapeake; a sister, Dorothy Pugh of Franklin, Va.; five grandchildren, Chris, Amanda and John Wilkins, Jessica Brunmeier and Angela Hutchenson; six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Frankie L. Wilkins. The family would like to thank the staff of Bon Secours Hospice for their care and support. SATTERWHITE, William Hudson, 71, went to be with his Lord and Savior peacefully November 4, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Carol Haas Satterwhite of Yorktown; his daughter, Kimberley S. Mayne (Troy); grandsons, Britt and Jon Rogers of Chesterfield; beloved niece, Kathleen Herndon of Highland Springs; stepdaughters, April F. Heinze of Coronado, Calif., Norma C. Fenton (Steve Oyer), and Mona F. Reichle (Donald); stepgrandsons, Trey and Fenton Reichle of Yorktown; nephews, Russell of Highland Springs and David Woods (April) of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; sister, Desta Woods of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. He was a past deacon of Seaford Church of Christ, an 18-year member of York Lions Club, and chief election officer of Tabb precinct for many years. He was retired from Alcatel-Lucent (formerly Western Electric). His body was donated to science. A memorial service, conducted by Joe E. DUTY, William Lester "Les", ended his final courageous battle on November 6, 2009. A retired attorney and counselor at law and a retired Lt. Colonel, AUS, Les was born November 19, 1926 in Rhodell, West Virginia, the son of Starling Ellis and Dora Smith Duty. The husband of Marianne R.B. Duty, his wife of nearly 51 years (November 28), he was predeceased by three brothers, Marvin L. Duty, Clifford Bernard Duty and Vinton Duty; and three sisters, Ruth Duty, Bertha Duty and Myrtle Adeline Duty Ring. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Mary-Leslie Duty-Emmons and son-in-law, Michael Lance Emmons; three brothers, James Russell Duty, Cecil Alvin Duty and Billy Gene Duty; and two sisters, Ruby June Duty Mitchell and Kate Lorraine Duty Cole; as well as many nieces and nephews. Les was a true Renaissance man. A student of the arts, science, religious philosophy, history, nature and politics, he was also a collector of coins and weapons. An avid sportsman, bird hunter and fisherman and world traveler, he grew up in the hinterlands of southwest Virginia. He enlisted in the Army at the age of nineteen, intending to make it his career. He served in Germany at the end of World War II and re-enlisted after returning to the states. He was trained as a paratrooper at Ft. Bragg, N.C., and as a tank commander at Ft. Knox, Ky. In 1952, while on duty in Korea, he was shot in the heart by enemy fire and left for dead, however, he managed to alert a medic and was taken by helicopter to a M.A.S.H. unit. After he recovered, Les was informed that he was no longer fit for combat duty, whereupon he remained in the United States Army Reserve until November 1986. With the knowledge that a career in the Army was denied him, he entered the University of Richmond, where after taking undergraduate classes he was admitted to the T.C. Williams School of Law (where he met his future wife). Deciding to broaden his spectrum of studies, he went to Virginia Commonwealth University (then the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary). All the while he was reading law with attorneys Flavius Walker and Raymond Dupuy, qualifying to take the Virginia State Bar examination in 1961, which he passed on his first sitting. He opened his office as a sole practitioner in 1962; 26 years later he was joined by his daughter and the firm of Duty and Duty (now Duty, Duty & Landry) was formed. Among other organizations, Les was a member of the Richmond Area Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America; the 82nd Airborne Metro Association; the National Military Reserve Officers Association of the United States; the Military Order of the Purple Heart; the Virginia Commonwealth University Alumni Association; the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the United States and the Ruffed Grouse Society. He was also a member in good standing (retired) of the Virginia State Bar and the Chesterfield County Bar Association. Les will be remembered by all who knew him for his compassionate caring, his loyalty, his honesty and integrity, his gentleness and inquisitiveness, as well as his wit and wry humor, his professionalism and his total dedication to the people and causes in which he believed. He will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. The family will receive friends 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., with funeral service to be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 9, at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rte. 10). NEWPORT NEWS - William Roland Akers, 'Bill', devoted husband and loving father, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at the age of 75 after a brief fight with cancer. Bill was born in Winding Gulf, W.Va., Bill served in the Army for two years after high school. He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Baptist Church and a resident of Newport News. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 42 years of service as a shipfitter. He and his wife loved gospel music and enjoyed traveling after retiring. He enjoyed collecting elephants and antique toys., He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Dorcas Akers; his stepmother, Louise Howton Riggins of S.C.; his daughter, Chris Akers Wissman, husband, Mark, grandchildren, Hannah, Bethany, Jonathan and Matthew; his son, William Roland Akers Jr., wife, Lisa, grandchildren, Brittany, Kandice and Travis; his stepsister-in-law, Gayle Rosser and nieces, Dawn Capenter (Cornell), Lenora Rosser ( Rick ), Theresa McKee (Jonathan) and nephew Rodney Rosser. |

Henry A. Young Sr. NORFOLK - Mr. Henry A. Young Sr., 85, passed away early Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 with his wife of 65 years, Ouida C. "Wheat" Young by his side. Mr. Young was a member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church and a retired upholsterer. Also surviving are a son, Henry A.
