Dr. Rayphield Clay, excepted the call as pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church of Chesapeake, she served faithfully and tirelessly as first lady for more than 35 years. Juanita was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Rhoda chapter, Tidewater Area Missionaries, Tidewater Ministers' Wives and Widows (where she served as a former president), Virginia Association of Ministers' Wives and Widows and the International Ministers' Wives and Widows. Left behind to carry on the Queen's legacy are her lovingly devoted husband of 43 years, the Rev. Dr. Rayphield Clay; six children Karen Earls (the Rev. Robert Sr.), Kevin Clay, Raynard Clay, Cheryl Owens (Darryl), Fern Speight (Clinton) and Connie Clay; one sister, Mogul Porter (Casey) of Georgia; two brothers, Willard Sexton of California and Ronald Sexton of New Jersey; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. To her family she was not just a queen, she was "The Queen." A queen is one who is greatly admired, stands out above all others, and is the best of its kind. "The Queen" has left her throne for her heavenly home, yet her legacy is eminent and eternal. A funeral will be held Tuesday, Nov. 17, at noon in Mount Zion Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Graves Funeral Home is handling arrangements., Make a memorial contribution

While serving as the District Advisory Specialist for Integration for the School System, he co-authored the city's desegregation plan and helped to spearhead the integration of the Hampton Public Schools. His integrity, generosity and humor were legend among those who knew him. Throughout his career, he was particularly concerned about the welfare and education of children. His friends knew that he was someone who could be called on in times of need, and his help and wise counsel were often solicited. He was devoted to his family, and he especially relished the time he got to spend with his grandchildren, Sean and Eva. He was enormously proud of them., Lorenzo loved music; he was fond of both listening to it and making it. As a young man, he sang in choirs. Parker, Frances

Frances Parker NORFOLK - Frances Parker left her earthly home to join her beloved family in their haven of eternal rest Nov. 7, 2009. A native of the Glenrock section of Norfolk County, Frances O'Neal grew up on a farm on the shores of the Currituck Sound in Aydlette, N.C. She was predeceased by her parents, Bertha Philbrick O'Neal from Old Town, Maine; her father, Claude O'Neal, a farmer and expert ship's carpenter; and her brother, Meril, a victim of the 1918 flu epidemic. The keeper of her memory is her devoted daughter, Pat. Frances married the love of her life, Wilbur Parker at the end of World War II. They had just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary when he died of coronary complications. Wilbur was the salesman for Lance Incorporated at the time of his death. Mrs. Parker's mother taught her the craft of sewing and tailoring, a lifelong passion that enabled her to acquire her position teaching sewing for Singer when she first came to Norfolk. She spoke with pride of her tenure as supervisor for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company during the war, the era of switch boards and head sets. Before the evolution of neighborhood civic leagues, Mrs. Parker was a perennial member "League of Granby Elementary Room Mothers." During her tenure as president of the Wards Corner Garden Club, she oversaw the installation of the Academy Terrace wrought iron and wood sign, one of the last to be replaced by the City of Norfolk. Her early commitment to community was evidenced by her dedication as the "flower girl" for Twiford's Funeral Home, as she penned the roster of memorial flowers for bereaved families. The last two years of Mrs. Parker's life was facilitated by her honorary family, Queenie Lawrence, Leona Henderson and Isabel Smith of Seniorcorp. The private memorial celebration was led by the Rev. Kathleen Monge at the family gravesite at Riverside Cemetery in the Berkley section of Norfolk with arrangements handled by Twiford's of Great Bridge. Rex O. JONES Jr.

JONES, Rex O. Jr., joined his Lord on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, after a full life of 93 years. Although saddened by his departure, his family members are consoled by the fact that Rex had led such a good life, dedicated to his family, church, and friends, that his place with the Lord has long been assured. Rex was born in Richmond, Virginia June 19, 1916 to Rex O. Jones and Annie Lefebvre Jones. He lived in the Richmond area his entire life except for the time he spent in the Army as a Captain during WWII. His business career was highlighted by his rise to the presidency of Phillips Machinery Company. Socializing with business associates, friends and family was something that Rex thoroughly enjoyed and did with a unique ability to bring out the best in everyone. This was demonstrated by the many long and close relationships that Rex maintained over his many years. Saint Matthews Episcopal Church was a passion for Rex, whether he was serving as a church board member, usher, Sea Scout assistant, maintaining the rose garden, attending the many men's group functions or helping establish the memorial garden, the church was a prominent and continual part of the joy in Rex's life. A few years after the passing of his beloved wife of 56 years, Hallie Bowles Jones, Rex married Marjorie Moseley. This late-in-life marriage for the two of them was one that Rex cherished as ardently as a teenager's first love much to the delight of both Marge's and Rex's children. Rex was predeceased by his brother, Hubert "Buddy" Jones. Rex is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie Moseley Jones; and her five children, Danny, Dale, Robin, Lee and Wayne. Rex is also survived by his and Hallie's children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. These include: Rex Orion Jones III and wife, Becky Cockrell Jones, of Heathsville, Virginia, and their children, Laura Jones Shackleford and Gregory Orion Jones, and two great- granddaughters; Stephen Roy Jones and wife, Millie Lotocka Jones, of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Steve's children, Eric Stephen Jones and Kelly Jones Repko, and two great- grandsons. The memorial service will be held at Saint Matthews Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, 2009. There will be a reception after the ceremony in the church Parish Hall.

Strong, Mary Elizabeth Hughes Wright

Mary Elizabeth Hughes Wright Strong, of Roanoke, Va., was born on July 9, 1926 ,and died suddenly while snow-birding in Leesburg, Fla., on Tuesday, November 10, 2009. Mary Beth was a woman who lived a full and adventurous life. She loved life and she loved people., Although many paths pulled her to make the most of the situation, she always had the fortitude to greet each day with a cheerfulness that gave the passing friend, neighbor or loved one the feeling that she was ready for their problems. As only a mom can, her love was always there, no matter what we may have done at the moment. Her life started in SE Roanoke City born to Emmett Edmund Hughes and Maude Williar Hughes. She shared her childhood with her older brother, Ted, who watched over her like a great older brother, a bond that grew much stronger while he served during World War II., During that war era and while she was a hall monitor at Jefferson High School, she "detained" her future husband Frank Wright who was home on leave from the Navy. After the war they married and started their life in Richmond. Eventually the city girl moved to a "farm" with three children in tow. She spoke of those adventures often over the years. Her love for his family kept her laughing for many years., Life changed again and they returned to Roanoke. She was always a game lover whether it be Scrabble, Mexican train or cards (she was known for her Liverpool strategy). She looked for new challenges each day, but never got to drive that 18-wheeler. Singing was relegated to "Happy Birthday," but she loved to dance whether it was at the Big House in SE, square dancing or at home with any music playing. She let her children be themselves, supported them the best that she could, and allowed them to discover their talents. Her talent came later in life through oil painting., She went to work at General Electric and there found and married Lloyd "Sye" Strong. They had a wonderful adventure together sharing his New York family, Shrine friends and each other for the years granted by God. She loved her outdoor gardens and lake living in her later years. In her quiet but determined resolve she maintained her sanity with devotion to the Penhook United Methodist Church. Many wonderful moments were shared through their congregation., An old neighborhood boyfriend from SE appeared in her life at that time Walter "Smiley" Burnette. Their friendship allowed opportunities to connect back with their roots. They worked together to form the SE Group a monthly luncheon for the old neighborhood "kids" and extended families. They strolled through life looking over their shoulders to their youth. In the last few years Mary adapted to a home in Roanoke County, where she found her love of God in Windsor Hills United Methodist Church. She was a member in the Christian Woman's Group and maintained her love for life in all that she did. Her doting companion of one year found again from her Jackson Junior High School years Cecil Kincer shared only moments too short in his Florida home., Always a beautiful woman Mom prided herself in her dress and believed that to present yourself as happy on the outside would help make you feel better on the inside., "Mom We will miss your laughing voice, your perky phone calls, your listening ear and hugs. We always knew you were our protector and our greatest champion and our cheerleader. You demonstrated the true nature of Christ and share his love with everyone who met you. We thank you for sharing your life and faith. The world is a better place for you having passed through it.", She is survived by three children, Dane Wright (Jill Bartmess), Frank Wright Jr. (Kathie Hudson), and Jule Atkinson (Jim); grandchildren, Danny Wright (Amy), Tracy Jeffery (Marcus), and Jaclyn Atkinson ; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Riley Wright and Logan Jeffery; sister-in-law, Effie Hughes; and special niece, Cheri Hughes., She will be meeting her beloved dad, mom, brother and loved ones at the right side of the gates of Heaven. We know you are dancing today in the arms of Christ. We know you will be waiting and watching for us. We know you will be ringing a bell and calling us home., will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2009, with a "Celebration of Life" reception to follow at Windsor Hills United Methodist Church, 3591 Windsor Road, Roanoke, Va. 24018., In lieu of flowers, the family requests any contribution be sent to Windsor Hills United Methodist Church-Appalachian Service Project, a mission of home repair ministry for the poor of Appalachia., Make a memorial contribution
