Albert R. Stuart

Rhett interned as an NBC page and loved sharing tales of the stars that came before his desk. In 1961, he came west and played a Zook brother across from his real brother, Arthur King, in a production of Plain and Fancy at the Pasadena Playhouse, before following the coast up to San Francisco. In the early 70's Rhett began to direct his love of rhythm and voice into poetry. He often said he loved nothing more than a blank page and he wrote on a daily basis. Musicality and joy of word play influenced his work, which he read at dozens of San Francisco venues, riffing on reminiscences and daily life. Years of training as a singer and at the National Academy of Broadcasting came through in the mesmerizing smoothness of his lovely, baritone voice. As an artist and person, Rhett was a mentor and an inspiration to many. He made connections throughout the art community of San Francisco. He attended writing workshops at Central City Hospitality House and the Tenderloin Reflection and Education Center, where he also sat on the Board of Directors., Rhett was a great believer in treating oneself with kindness, just as we would others we care about. Deeply spiritual and philosophical, Rhett helped establish the Tenderloin Self-Help center and was one of the original peer counselors who went to Esalen for training in reflective-listening. In 1989 his book Man OffBeat was published by Freedom Voices, and reprinted in 1990 and '94., This past decade, Rhett enjoyed creating colorful sketches while continuing to write and play music. He generously shared his work with family and friends., Rhett is survived by three cherished brothers and their families, William and wife, Pat, Gray and Peggy, and King, formerly married to Toni; nieces and nephews, Susan, Jane, Alice, Tricia, Megan, Danny, Reid, Robbie, Billy, Hal and other extended family., Rhett was preceded in death by his parents, longtime residents of Newport News, William C. Stuart Jr. and Susan Reid Williams Stuart.

Irene Gentry

She was born in New York on May 9, 1911, but resided in Hampton most of her life, raising two children, Mary Ann Eads and Cliff Gentry. The last 13 years were spent in Yorktown, where she resided with her son. She was blessed with six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, many of whom loved her and saw her regularly. She was a gracious lady with a delightful sense of humor and she will be greatly missed. We picture her with her Lord and Savior, where she can again play the piano and knit to her heart's content.

Jayne B. Smith

Jayne will always be remembered for her friendship and the relationships she maintained across decades and vast geographic distance. She was always there to help a friend and when she caught up with one after a long absence, it was as though they had spoken just the day before. She loved the shore, frequently returning to the beaches she loved even after her health had started to decline., When she was not influencing the lives of friends and family, she enriched and encouraged the students she taught at Westfield Senior High in Westfield, N.J., Peninsula Catholic High and Gloucester High School. A day did not go by that Jayne would not go the extra mile to quench the thirst for learning, help with college admissions or counsel a student to sort out their path in this life. Following her attendance in the Charlottesville public schools, Mrs. Feil attended Randolph Macon Women's College and then the University of Virginia, where she received her degree in education with an emphasis in science and mathematics. After teaching public school in Albemarle County for a year, Mrs. Feil was married and lived for five years in Rochester, N.Y., after which she and her husband, Ralph, returned to Charlottesville. Although she was interested in all intellectual pursuits, particularly reading, Neville (and later "Grandma Nevi") devoted most of her life and her talents and energy to caring for her husband, home, extended family and friends, and doing nice things for others. Neville loved cooking, gardening, sewing, swimming regularly with her sister, Lucy, and her friend, Sue Haight, playing cards and entertaining her large extended family, most often on birthdays and other special family occasions. She also enjoyed teaching and loved to teach her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews how to cook, sew, work puzzles, play ball, play cards, repair furniture and do any number of exciting and interesting things. Neville volunteered for many years at the Martha Jefferson Hospital. She touched many lives in many different ways, always with a certain grace, good humor and genuine interest in the lives of others. She asked for very little, gave very much and continued to brighten the lives of her family with her smiles until her death. The family deeply appreciates the considerate and gentle care given to Neville by all the staff at Martha Jefferson Infirmary during her stay there and in recent weeks by Hospice of the Piedmont. There will be a graveside service open to all on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive guests at the home of John and Nancy Lowry, 3475 Red Hill School Road, North Garden, after the service. The family suggests that any who wish to do so make memorial contributions to a favorite charity. Friends may sign the guest book at www.hillandwood.com.

Thomas L. Ragans

Tommy grew up in Seaford, Va., and later married his high school sweetheart Robin and moved to Dandy where they lived for 24 years and raised three beautiful girls., Tommy was employed at his family business at Ragans Auto in Grafton. He was shop foreman and part business owner. He was a member and past deacon of Seaford Baptist Church. He had many devoted customers and always was willing to help anybody who came along his path. It was not unusual for him to go out of his way, day or night to go to help a stranded friend in fact it was regular practice for him. He treated people with the same courtesy and kindness that he would want for his family., Tommy loved life and all it had to offer. He loved fishing, jet skiing, skiing, and hanging out in Dandy with his buddies who loved nothing more than to talk about their day and cruise around the neighborhood on their golf carts. Yet when the day was done is was his wife's arms he longed for and his hugs from his little girls!, Left to cherish all his memories are his devoted and loving wife of 24 years, Robin Ragans. He leaves behind his mother-in-law, Carol Meador of Newport News; and his brother-in-law, Jeff Meador and wife, Terrie of Yorktown. In addition there is a huge circle of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews that he adored. He especially loved all his nephews who he often spent many hours with boating, jet skiing and trying to capture back his youth!, The visitation will be at 10.a.m. on Wed. Nov. 18, 2009, at Seaford Baptist Church with the funeral immediately following at 11a.m. with Dr. Richard Harrell and Pastor Aaron West officiating.
