She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 62 years, Robert Franklin Beard Jr. Also celebrating her life are her four children and their spouses, Robert F. Beard III and Deane Collie Beard of Culpeper, Va., John K. Beard and Rebecca Norris Beard of Pennsylvania, Keri Beard Todd and the Rev. Gerald E. Todd of Towson, Md., and Kimberly Beard Kacani and Patrick J. Kacani of Henrico. Her loving grandchildren are Avigail Beard Hatfield of Danville, Va., Emily Collie-Beard of Culpeper, Va., Nancy Collie-Beard of Culpeper, Va., Brittany (Beard) and Kyle Osborne of Tampa, Fla., Logan N. Beard of Warren, Pa., Joshua and Becky Todd of Hendersonville, N.C., Robyn (Todd) and Allen Schelp of Concordia, Mo., Kati (Todd) and David Zick of Wake Forest, N.C., Andrew Todd of Towson, Md., Juanita (Todd) and Jahmeel Thompson of Towson, Md., and Ryan, Jenny and Mollie-Aidan Kacani of Henrico. Her most recent fans are her 11 great-grandchildren, Mingan, Sierra, Conner and Gabriel Hatfield of Danville, Va., Jacob, Nathan and Paul Schelp of Concordia, Mo., Luke, Lauren and Andrew Zick of Wake Forest, N.C., and Kayla Clare Thompson of Towson, Md. She is loved by her "baby" brother, Bob Martin and his wife, Pat, and their children, Bobby Martin, Scott and Diana Martin, and Ryan and Joanne Martin; and also her sister-in-law, Carolyn (Beard) Garrett, and her children, Bob and Beverly Garrett and Franklin "Skipper" Garrett. She will also be remembered as surrogate Mom by the many children of North Chamberlayne, Luther Memorial School, Henrico High School, Goochland County and Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She never failed to greet the lost and the lonely with a kind word and a warm meal. There was almost always an extra place setting at the Beard dinner table. Until sidelined by illness, she was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Richmond, Va., where, among other tasks, she tended nursery, taught Sunday School, prepared gelatin salads for the church potlucks, and critiqued the sermons. You might get a good sermon from the pulpit on Sunday morning, but you would certainly get one from Clara any day of the week if you gave her the opening. She was also actively involved at Luther Memorial School in Richmond, making sure that the little things got done, including the organization of the school library with her friend, Helen Pohlig. After what was for her, as a young student, too short a stay at her beloved Valparaiso University in Indiana, Clara attended Columbia Business College in Columbia, S.C., before moving to Hampton, Va. to teach kindergarten at Immanuel Lutheran Church. It was there in 1948 that she met the love of her life, "Bobby." She had her misgivings at first - he was, after all, a sailor home from the War, but she decided she would marry him, she said, because he had gentle hands. In any event, he chased her until she caught him, and they were married on December 18, 1949. Together, they attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va., where Clara received her Phi Kappa Phi key and a B.S. in Rural Sociology in June of 1954.

David Mark Bailey

David Mark Bailey, 44, of Earlysville, died of brain cancer on Saturday, October 2, 2010, in Charlottesville, Virginia, and was welcomed into everlasting life at his place at the Table with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ., David was born February 26, 1966, the son of Kenneth and Ethel Bailey, missionaries to the Middle East. For the first 22 years of his life, his home was Beirut, Lebanon, including the first 10 years of the Lebanese civil war. Because of war, the family was obliged to evacuate first to Switzerland in 1967, and later to Cyprus in 1982. David's two final years of high school were completed in a private school in Germany because he was, as a young man, especially vulnerable on the streets of Beirut., David attended Grove City College in western Pennsylvania, where he met and married his soul mate, Leslie McGarvey, of Emlenton, Pennsylvania. During his college years, he was active as a performing songwriter, playing evening and weekend gigs with a music partner. He also enjoyed choir, frat life, acting, and organizing an underground newspaper. David graduated with majors in English and Communication Arts. In the late 1980's, David and Leslie relocated to the Washington, D.C., area where David worked for the United States government in satellite imagery analysis. His career evolved to training and then program management with numerous software subcontractors, ending with employment with Eastman Software in Massachusetts., Their daughter, Kelcey, was born in 1992, and son, Cameron, in 1994., The day prior to moving to the Boston area, in July of 1996, David was diagnosed with brain cancer - Glioblastoma Multiforme IV (GBM). He was expected to have fewer than two years to live. Eager to have his life make a difference in the lives of others, he gave up his career in the software industry and, with a great leap of faith, launched a third career as a performing songwriter - a "troubadour of hope." Following two surgeries, radiation, experimental chemotherapy and nuclear therapy, David criss-crossed America (and Europe) singing in coffee houses and churches, for cancer conferences and cancer survivor groups for 12 years. David wrote all of his own songs, which grew out of his experiences of war and of battling a deadly cancer. He sang of faith, hope, love, and of living life to it's fullest each day. He experienced a recurrence of brain cancer in late 2008, recovering enough to tour in 2009 and early 2010. Enduring numerous additional surgeries and difficult treatments, David made a final tour in July of this year., David is survived by Leslie, his wife of 23 years; his children, Kelcey and Cameron; his parents, Kenneth and Ethel Bailey; a sister, Sara Makari and her husband, Victor; numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law and eight nieces and nephews., To quote a line from one of David's songs, "The tears of the angels form a river where you can wash your pain, and even in the middle of the thunder, don't forget the love inside the rain." His theme was "There may be years of tears behind you, but right now you've got One More Day." He leaves behind him a musical legacy of 23 professionally-recorded CDs. His music and his personal testimony have affected the lives of countless thousands in this country and around the world., The family offers deep gratitude to Doctor Henry Friedman, Doctor Allan Friedman and Doctor David Reardon at Duke and Doctor David Schiff at University of Virginia Medical Center and their caring staffs. We also offer loving thanks to our family of caregivers at the Hospice House and Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville., Memorial gifts are welcome and may be made to Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church, 6566 Spring Hill Road, Ruckersville, VA 22968. Half of those gifts will be equally divided between the following brain tumor organizations, The American Brain Tumor Association, the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Gray Matters Foundation, the Florida Brain Tumor Association and T.H.E. Brain Trust.

Glenn Snyder

Glenn Jacob Snyder Glenn Jacob Snyder, 87, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010. He was the loving, devoted husband of Donna Lou Jones Snyder for 59 years. Born Wednesday, Aug. 1, 1923, in Akron, Ohio, Glenn was a son of the late George Snyder and Henrietta Ley Snyder. In addition to his wife, Glenn is survived by four children, Jack Snyder and his wife, Sally, of Richmond, Leslie Snyder, of Bedford, Adrianne O'Brien and her husband, Tony, of Palymra, and Jeffrey Snyder and his wife, Blair, of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren, Amanda Clarke, Matthew Snyder, Jessica Tanner, Erin Tutt, Addie Snyder, Ethan Snyder and Bella O'Brien; a great granddaughter, Hadley Tanner; a brother, Ted Snyder, of Akron, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Glenn was preceded in death by a sister in-law, Elsie Snyder, and a brother-in-law, Trammell Hogg. Glenn was an enthusiastic student of science and mathematics from his earliest years. Throughout high school, he spent much of his time building working scale models in his father's machine shop, racing tether cars and flying gas-propelled homemade model airplanes. "This was long before radio-controlled planes," he would say, "You would have to walk a mile to find the good ones. The really good ones you'd never find. " When his country called upon him to serve during World War II, he was elated that he could bring his skills and talents to help in keeping our forces mobilized and armed. He spent most of his years in the service in the Pacific with the 3498th Infantry, creating and engineering parts for weaponry and vehicles that were not available through official channels. He would fondly recount witnessing General McArthur's return to Red Beach on Leyte Island. Following the war, the G.I. Bill made it possible for him to attend Ohio University, where he continued his study of mechanics and mathematics and graduated a professional engineer. After several years with Ohio Boxboard and Goodyear Aerospace in Akron, Glenn answered a call for engineering candidates for the formation of the Atomic Energy Division of Babcock & Wilcox. He was the only candidate from Akron that was hired and soon found himself among the leading engineers of this burgeoning industry. He followed this calling to Lynchburg in 1956, where he began work in the small offices on Fort Avenue that B&W shared with Piggly Wiggly. "We used to call it PigglyCock WigglyCox." During his 29-year career with B&W, Glenn worked on the development of projects such as the nuclear merchant ship Savannah, and numerous nuclear power generation stations and propulsion equipment until his retirement in 1984. Throughout his life in Lynchburg, he was an active member of Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church. He maintained a constant presence in service to The Lord as a Sunday school teacher, a Deacon, and an Elder. He enthusiastically spread God's Word through his longtime involvement with Gideon's International. Maurice Steingold

Maurice Steingold NORFOLK - After a full and complete life of 94 years, Maurice Steingold passed away Oct. 15, 2010 in his home in Florida, one week before his 61st wedding anniversary. Humble defined his life, beginning, as he was proud to tell anyone, in the Berkley section of Norfolk, the son of Joseph and Ida Laibstain Steingold. He graduated from Maury High School, Norfolk Division of William & Mary and University of Virginia Law School. His love was great for his devoted wife, Thelma Saunders; their four sons and daughters-in-law, Ira and Jean, Lawrence, Joe and Sam and Trish and their grandchildren, Mike, a senior at University of California at "the other Berkeley," Max and Rose. His life's passions, too numerous to count, encompassed professional, athletic and community activities. The youngest of five brothers, he cherished his time while practicing law with Sam and Israel and his frequent visits, at least weekly, with Dr. Ben and Dr. Meyer (Make) and all their families. Concurrently, his real estate development businesses that he enjoyed with his brothers and with his cousins, Simon and Junius Miller, went beyond his wildest imagination. His myriad of nieces and nephews knew that "Uncle Morris" loved being with them and was always there for them. Beginning in the late 1950s, he became an avid tennis player which continued for many decades and sparked his action to set up a scholarship at ODU and be a founder of Tidewater Tennis Center. He and Thelma enjoyed their times at music performances, museums and many other cultural events. Ask him about music and he would run to get his saxophone or sit at the piano and tell you about his days in the Maury High School and University of Virginia bands, plus his young professional career. The family wishes to thank the loving caregivers who provided such great support. A memorial service will be held at Ohef Sholom Temple on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of Trish and Sam, 107 S. Dogwood Road, Virginia Beach, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be made through www.hdoliver.com.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed traveling and made several extended vacation trips up and down the east coast with his sister Josephine. In search of that perfect spot to retire, he found his final home in Virginia. After settling in the Concord area, Mike quickly adjusted to life in the country, and loved living on a farm. With time on his hands and his background in engineering, Mike began work on things he had always wanted to do, including building his own computer from the frame up. He offered his treasure trove of knowledge and skills to his neighbors and friends in many ways, helping build houses, decks, pools and more. Although he grew up in the big city, Mike always had a secret wish to drive a tractor, and accomplished one of his heart's desires tending to the bush-hogging, mowing and gardening on the farm in Concord. He also invested his time in the lives of his neighbors and learned how to become a master Christmas tree shearer. Mike lived a full life, caring and giving to others, and expressed his joy in knowing that he had made a difference.
