Melisande Carter Savory

Carter Savory, Melisande Carter Savory passed away on Friday, October 22, 2010, while fighting a most courageous battle against vaginal melanoma., Lissy, as she was affectionately know, was born on October 30, 1956, in Charlottesville, Virginia. She is survived by her loving parents, Walter E. Savory and Theo Housh Savory. She is also survived by her sister, Grenelle Delany; her husband, Peter, and their children, Gray and Charlotte., Lissy loved her extended family at Blue Ridge School where she served as Administrative Assistant in Development. We marveled at her numerous talents ranging from computer graphics to performing skits on stage for parents' weekend. Lissy treasured the natural beauty of her surroundings and especially all of God's creatures. Her pet squirrel, Georginna, visited Lissy multiple times during her days at work, watching Lissy through her second story window, as she munched on delicious grains and nuts left by Lissy on the sill., At home, Lissy enjoyed her four dogs, all excelling in agility and obedience training. She took great pleasure in her years of foxhunting with the Keswick Hunt Club, riding Spice, her favorite hunter. She was also fortunate to experience foxhunting with Link Brooking and Montpelier Hunt. Lissy loved the adventures of travel with wonderful Abercrombie trips to Africa, Russia, and numerous sunny cruises., Lissy faced every obstacle of her illness with extreme courage and great hope for success. She never complained, and was an inspiration to us all. She leaves behind an empty chair at our table on Thanksgiving, many gifts unopened on Christmas Day, a basket waiting to be discovered at Easter, and wishes that we could just enjoy one more day together, and yet another. We love you, Lissy., We are thankful for the days we had with her, and are humbled by the friends who made her life so meaningful. We are thankful for Dr. Peyton Taylor who always stopped for a visit to offer warmth and encouragement for Lissy, as well as healing for her family. We are thankful for the nurses and others on the eighth floor at The University of Virginia Medical Center that helped Lissy through long days and nights. We were touched by her dear friends that offered endless love and support; for Thornton Jones who spent many nights at the hospital, and Lane Crawford and John Coleman, who were always there for Lissy. We are thankful for unending support from Dr. and Mrs. John O'Reilly and the Blue Ridge School family., A precious daughter, a beautiful sister, a devoted aunt, and a courageous spirit, she is now in God's arms. We miss you, Lissy., A memorial service, a celebration of life will be held at St. Paul's, Ivy, 11 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 2010., In lieu of flowers, the families suggest a contribution to the Melisande Carter Savory Memorial Scholarship Fund, 273 May Drive, St. George, Virginia 22935.

Davis, and his loving son, Kenneth S. Davis., First Sgt. Davis was born in 1937, and raised in Winfield, Kan. During his many years of service to the Army, Davis was recipient of numerous awards including the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, Vietnam Medal Cross of Gallantry with Palm. Following his 26-year career retirement from the Army in 1982, he and his family settled in Petersburg, Va. The Department of the Army Civil Service subsequently employed Davis, for 22 years, as 23d Quartermaster brigade postal officer at Fort Lee, where he received the Department of the Army Superior Civilian Service and Civilian Achievement Service Medals., Davis was a devout American patriot, dedicated to his country and its history. Throughout his lifetime he was a passionate student of American history with specific interest in the study of the American Revolution and U.S. Army Quartermaster history. Over many years he gained status as a writer, author and speaker on various facets of military history. During his military and civilian career he was also at times affiliated with the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee. Davis was elected to the Company of Military Historians in 1974 and became a periodic contributing writer to their quarterly journal., Davis' particular area of historical concentration was the American Revolution, which began while he was Fort Lee's representative to the Petersburg American Revolution Bicentennial Commission in 1975. His subsequent studies, research, and writings led to the first-in-history, comprehensive account of the Revolutionary War Battle of Petersburg. Concurrently, Davis authored and published the biography of the British commander of that battle, who is buried in Petersburg's Blandford Church Cemetery: "Where a Man Can Go, Major General William Phillips, British Royal Artillery, 1731—1781." In conjunction with the Petersburg Department of Tourism and Museums, Davis founded the city's annual reenactment of the Revolutionary War Battle of Petersburg and later produced 16 yearly events, which brought many reenactment units from along the eastern coastal states to the city.
