Aloma E. Scott Aloma Elaine Scott, 49, of Pulaski died Monday, Oct. 18, 2010. Funeral service was held Thursday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Revs. Mike Ingo, Terry Eversole and David Scott officiating. A graveside service was held Friday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Odd Fellows Cemetery. She was born May 25, 1961, in Pulaski. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alesia Lynn Scott. Survivors include her parents, Donald and Eleanor Viar Scott of Pulaski; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Donald Kipling and Kathy Scott of Pulaski, and the Rev. David Delano Scott of Marion; a niece, Rebecca L. Scott of Marion; a nephew, Joshua D. Scott of Marion; and many other relatives and close friends. Memorial donations may be made to the, . William Andrew Ward SUFFOLK - William "Billy" Andrew Ward, 67, passed away Oct. 22, 2010. He was born in Corapeake, N.C., the son of the late Lorene Burch Ward and William Thomas Ward. He formerly worked as the convenience store manager for the Red Apple. Billy is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Jennifer Ward of Fredericksburg, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Anita and the Rev. Justin Williams of King William, Va.; six grandchildren; sister, Doris W. Daughtrey of Suffolk; nephew, Michael Powell of Suffolk; and numerous other nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Monday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. in Holly Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Justin Williams officiating. Archie Percell Monroe Archie Percell Monroe, 93, of Gladys, passed away Thursdsay, Oct. 21, 2010. Born Aug. 9, 1917, to the late Charlie T. Monroe and Virginia Dean Monroe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Peerman Monroe. Archie was a member of the Hills Creek Baptist Church. He was retired from the Campbell County School System. He served as the Past Master of the Long Mountain Lodge #204 Fraternal Order of Masons. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. A celebration of Archie's life will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at Hills Creek Baptist Church, Gladys, with the Rev. John E. Price Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the Monroe Family Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Post 16. His remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. The family is receiving friends at a memorial service from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at Hills Creek Baptist Church, 3721 Long Island Road, Gladys. The cortege will assemble at the church. Bertille ROLLINS

In 1940 she married Albert Rollins, a young West Point U.S. Army lieutenant, after meeting him on a blind date a year earlier. She put aside her musical past and embraced the role of Army officer's wife and mother through 20 relocations with domestic and international assignments until her husband's death in 2000. They retired to Huntsville, Ala., in 1970 where she was an active member of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild, Colonial Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Huntsville and also served as a docent at the Huntsville Museum of Art for nearly 20 years.

Bret L. Falde VIRGINIA BEACH - Bret Lyle Falde passed June 2, 2010 in Orlando, Fla. The eagle took flight onto a greater place. Bret was born Jan. 5, 1967 in Mountain View, Calif. He was a graduate of Green Run High School 1985 and the Norfolk Naval Ship Yard Apprentice School. He was employed with Proctor & Gamble. Bret was predeceased by his father, Larry B. Falde Sr. He is survived by his mother, Penny Falde of Virginia Beach; brother, Larry Falde of Orlando; sisters and their spouses, Sherry and Les White, LaFawn and Mike Elliott, all of Virginia Beach; nieces and nephews, Michael Brite, Renee Galloway, Ashley Brite, Bree Elliott, Tony Elliott of Virginia Beach, Shailah Falde of Orlando, and partner, Steve Paradis of Orlando. Bret overcame many obstacles and challenges in his life. His two-year battle with cancer was fought with relentless courage and remarkable strength. Charlie Royal Shelton GRETNA Charlie Royal Shelton, 66, of 1176 Homestead Road, Gretna, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at his residence. Born May 16, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Edwin Royal Shelton and Melva (Reba) Walker Shelton. He was predeceased by a brother, Garland Shelton. Mr. Shelton attended Summersett Baptist Church and was retired from the Lane Company. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam and past commander of DAV Chapter 46. He was a member of the Halifax Beekeeper Association and enjoyed farming and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Linda Brumfield Shelton, of the residence; a son, Ricky Farris, and wife, Robin, of Sylva, N.C.; two daughters, Lisa Cook, of Gretna, and Jamie Pannell and her husband, Linwood, of Gretna; a brother, Rufus Shelton, and his wife, Jean, of Gretna; three sisters, Alise Russell and her husband, Bill, of Norfolk, Gereline Hines and her husband, Dickie, of Hurt, and Christine Achor and her husband, John, of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, April Newcomb, Daniel Epperson and Jayden Shelton; and three great-grandchildren, Hailey Holder, Mason Newcomb and Aaron Newcomb. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, at Summersett Baptist Church by Ronnie Simpson and the Rev. Bobby Brumfield. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Carl O. She was a loving mother and daughter who was loved by all who knew her. She loved the outdoors. Dawn Marie Corbisier Dawn Marie Corbisier, 54, of Gladys, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at her residence. Born April 25, 1956, in Green Bay, Wis., she was the daughter of Mary Rita Devos Corbisier and the late Marvin Elmer Corbisier. Dawn was a U.S. veteran, serving in The United States Army for 10 years during the Vietnam War. She was an E6 Staff Sgt and her MOS was a 64 C. She was a sharpshooter with an M-16 rifle. She earned a good conduct medal and the Army Accommodation Medal. Dawn also earned an Army Service Ribbon Driver and Mechanics Badge with bar and an overseas service ribbon with numeral 1. She also was with the 37th trans group where she had a milestone of driving 1,000 miles accident free. In addition to her father, Dawn is preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Ann Kane, and stepmother-in-law, Jean Ann Collier. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Frances Dean; three brothers, Willie Dean, Oakley Dean and Lanvil Dean; and two great grandchildren. He was a Veteran of the United States, . He worked for Clinchfield Coal Company for 25 years and retired from Delta Faucet after 22 years. He is survived by four daughters, Betty Patrick and husband, Freddie of Dante, Va., Helen Jessee and husband, Dave of Powhaton, Va., Shirley Chaffin and husband, Winston of Dante, Va., and Frances Dean of Rockford, Ill.; three sons, Edgar Dean Jr. and wife, Mary of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Wayne Dean of Rockton, Ill., and Kenneth Dean of Chickaska, Okla.; one sister, Mildred Skeens of Gray, Tenn.; special caregivers, Frances Dean and her daughter, Angie Dean; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Esther was born in Robersonville, N.C., April 28, 1937 to John D. and Alida S. Tyler. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, John D. Tyler Jr. and sister, Alida T. Anderson. She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Walton of Wanchese; and her children, Catherine Sellers of Straits, N.C., Jay Roberson of Wanchese, Celia Walsh of Durham, N.C., and Erica Walton of Raleigh, N.C. Esther was a graduate of ECU and the UNC School of Social Work. She retired as a clinical social worker for UNC Hospitals after 30 years of service. She loved to travel, read, and watch Carolina basketball. Esther was active in the North Carolina Lions and attended five international Lions' conventions as a representative of the VIP Fishing Tournament. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 23, at Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo. Burial will follow at Cudworth Cemetery. Helen M. McLachlan Helen Francis McNair McLachlan, 93, of Pearisburg died Monday, Oct. 18, 2010. A memorial graveside service will be held later with the Rev. Preston O. Sartelle officiating. She was born July 10, 1917, in St. Louis, Mo., daughter of the late Charles Hicks and Katherine Sexton McNair of Houston, Texas. She was the granddaughter of the late Rev. James Witten Sexton and the late Susan Rebecca Ball Sexton of Wytheville. She was the niece of the late Governor of Virginia E. Lee Trinkle and the late Helen Sexton Trinkle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Argyle McLachlan; and a sister, Katherine Norrell Sexton Lynch. She graduated from Rice University in 1937 and earned a master of education degree from the University of Houston. She taught and was a school administrator for many years in Houston, Texas. She was an accomplished pianist and a clothing designer. She was a member of Lady Washington Chapter, DAR of Houston and the Colonial Dames of America, 17th Century. Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Katherine M. Rodgers of Pearisburg; a granddaughter, Katherine Leigh Rodgers of Houston, Texas; a great-granddaughter, Amanda Katherine Rodgers of Houston, Texas; a niece, Susan Rebecca Lynch Bishop of Houston, Texas; three great-nieces and great-nephews, all of Houston, Texas; seven great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, all of Houston, Texas; and a special cousin, Emma Thorn Lively of Pulaski. The family is grateful to Dr. Syed Haider for his excellent and compassionate care and for the dignity he afforded her final years. Helen M. Maloney PORTSMOUTH - Helen Mang Maloney, beloved wife, cherished mother, proud grandmother died Oct. 20, 2010 at home with her family. Born Dec. 18, 1921 and raised in Honesdale, Pa., she graduated from Misericordia College, completing an MA in English at Syracuse University. She continued her lifelong pursuit of knowledge and education after relocating to Tidewater earning her MA in education at Old Dominion University. Throughout her life and career as a committed educator, she touched, influenced and engaged countless people of all ages. None so much as her dedicated and loving husband, William J., a retired electrical engineer from the GE plant in Suffolk. Left also to cherish her memory are her children, William J. (Kathie) Maloney II, Patrice Maloney, Denise (John) Starkus and Mary (Mame) Maloney. Helen's continued extended blessings and joys included her grandchildren, Rachel and Erin Kouwe, Megan Snyder with great-grandchild, Anna Grace and Evans; James (Audra Pinkerton) Maloney and Chris (Dorothy LaRosa) Starkus and great-grandchild, Jordyn Starkus. Her numerous friends and peerless challengers will continue to carry her joy and her debates throughout many ages of time. Helen grew up in Rocky Mount, N.C., before coming back to Virginia. She received her undergraduate degree in teaching from East Carolina University and her master's degree from The College of William & Mary and taught school from 1953 to 1983, retiring with 30 years of service. Helen was a member of Lynnhaven United Methodist Church, enjoyed collecting stamps and worked with a Braille association, where she helped put together Bibles to be sent all over the world. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Steven Meadows; sister, Kathleen Franklin; daughter-in-law, Kristine Meadows and son-in-law, Jeff Keezel. Helen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who will be deeply missed by all. Left to cherish her memory is her beloved husband of 55 years, Marvin Meadows of Virginia Beach; son, William David Meadows and wife Margaret of Williamsburg; daughter, Teresa Ann Keezel of Richmond; and beloved grandchildren, Rebecca and Nathaniel Keezel and Benjamin and Matthew Meadows and numerous friends. Preceding Jamee'l were her paternal grandparents, Willie and Alma Williams. Jamee'l leaves to cherish her memory her parents, Fred Williams and Juliette White; two sisters, Tashara S. Joan Virginia Aragona VIRGINIA BEACH - Joan Virginia Aragona, 73, formerly of Virginia Beach, departed this life Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, after a brief illness. She was born July 24, 1937 in Jamaica, N.Y., one of six children born to the late John and Virginia Aragona. When she was a teenager, the family relocated to Virginia Beach and in August of 1985, she moved to Nags Head, N.C., where she lived until she returned to Virginia seven years ago. Affectionately called "Joanie," she was an avid cook who prided herself on preparing delicious Italian meals for her family and friends. Local butchers and store managers knew her by name and often kept her abreast of grocery sales and specials. She had a plethora of recipes and was happiest when she was cooking. Joanie also loved the beaches of the Outer Banks where she spent many hours searching for beautiful pieces of sea glass that she collected with the same fervor with which she cooked. She was predeceased by her sister, Philomena Aragona and is survived by two sisters, Rachel Sancilio and Rosemarie Aragona and two brothers, John Aragona Jr. and Eugene Aragona, all of Virginia Beach. Also left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Eva Ryan and her husband Chris, Virginia Mack and her husband Peter of Virginia Beach, and Margaret Hunt of Kitty Hawk; two sons, Kenneth Brethauer III and Stephan Brethauer, both of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Alison Smithwick, Evan Mack, Asher Hunt and Erin Hunt; other relatives and friends. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1954. He enlisted in the Navy in Oct. of that year and retired in 1979 as a Master Chief., His Naval training as computer programmer led him to Unises where he worked for another 20 years. He retired again and went into private consult-ing in 2000 for the next 4 years., Jack and family lived in Dale City for 23 yrs. before moving to Stafford in 2000 for the past 10 yrs., Jack was a member of the American Legion as well as a longtime volunteer at the Chester Pulver, Post 1503 in Dale City where he helped out in supporting their many community activities., Jack very much enjoyed travel, casinos, playing chess, pinochole, poker at Carlos O'Kelly lunch at Ruby Tuesday's and karaoke at King St. Blues., He was also an avid Redskin fan and enjoyed an occasional martini as well as crabbing in Maryland., Jack will be missed by his family and friends but we all know he is now happy again to be with his wife, Carollyn whom he missed terribly. She is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 53 years, Raymond Lynwood Adams, of Blackstone, who adored her. She is also survived by two daughters, Kathy Adams Pierce and her husband, Mark, of Cary, North Carolina, and Laura Adams Zischke and her husband, Todd, of Louisa County; seven grandchildren, whom she lovingly called her "precious lambs," including Mark Stephen and Samuel Josiah Pierce of Cary, North Carolina, and Michelle Lauren, Nicole Alexandra, Julia Madison, Kevin Todd, and Joy Morgan Zischke of Louisa County; sister, Angie Tompkins Greenfield and husband, Walter, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; three brothers, Artie M. Tompkins Jr. and wife, Jackie, of Danville, Joseph P. Tompkins and wife, Jeri, of Lebanon, Ohio, and James W. Tompkins and wife, Peggy, of Lawrenceville, Georgia; sister-in-law, Marjorie Adams Cheatham and husband, Milton, of Midlothian; brother-in-law, Robert Wells Adams and wife, Betty, of Chesterfield. Kathryne, the first college graduate in her family, received her Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Longwood College. She taught for four years in Pittsylvania, Fairfax, and Nottoway County schools before becoming a mother at which time she devoted herself wholeheartedly to the care of her daughters. A talented seamstress, she sewed beautiful dresses and designed ballet costumes and was a creative and industrious homemaker. She taught her children and grandchildren to walk with God, serve with gladness, and to focus on "others, Lord, yes, others, let this my motto be." Kathryne was a member of Crenshaw United Methodist Church in Blackstone for over 50 years. She taught Sunday School and was a member of the Mary Virginia Irby Bible Class, the United Methodist Women, and the Wainwright Circle. She particularly loved serving at the Virginia United Methodist Assembly Center during the annual Ministers' Convocation. After her daughters were grown, she worked at Southside Virginia Community College in the library and became an amateur photographer. Later, she worked alongside her husband as he ran Blackstone Hardware. A celebration of life service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, October 24, 2010, at the Blackstone Presbyterian Church (due to renovation of Crenshaw). Burial will be private at Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone. The family will receive friends at the home, 254 Mill Road, Blackstone, on Saturday, October 23, at all times. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Josephine Marsh Pugh, Latelle Bunch, Jane Coleman, Shirley Gering, and Carroll Bledsoe Thomas Jr., She is survived by her husband of 50 years, James Thomas Marshall; her daughters, Deborah G. Pugh and Kimberly M. Underwood and her husband David. Also surviving her are her grandchildren, Lakin and Kirsten Underwood; and her long-time friend, Julia Morton., She was devoted to her family and took great pride in her grandchildren, enjoyed life and always kept her word. Mary Hazel Hensley MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. Mary Hazel Hensley, age 83, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at her residence. She was born on February 28, 1927, in Johnson County, to the late Eck Brooks and Blanche Watson Brooks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Eugene (Bud) Hensley; sisters Ruth Miller and husband Dudley and Frances Mae Brooks, brothers Ralph Brooks, Ernest Brooks, Charles Brooks and wife Barbara and a sister-in-law, Helen Smith. Mary Hazel was a 1945 Graduate of Johnson County High School, had retired from Mountain City Post Office with 30 years of service, loved her flowers and to collect angels. Mary Hazel was a very active and supportive member of the First United Methodist Church where she had served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Open Door Sunday School Class for many years, was active in the United Methodist Women and had served as communion leader for many years. Mary Hazel was a dedicated member of the Beta Theta Women's Club where her membership and dedication to helping others was treasured by her associates as well as many in the community. The club members will be making a memorial donation in honor of Mary Hazel to the Johnson County Cancer Support Group. Survivors include her son Robert Hensley; her grandchildren, Jennifer H. Icenhour and husband Billy of Mountain City, Tenn., and Steve L. C. Norman H. Traylor Jr. RICHMOND - Norman H. Traylor Jr. died Oct. 20, 2010. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mamie Owen Brister Traylor; his father, Norman Henry Traylor Sr.; and his granddaughter, Christine Traylor. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Virginia Mae Hancock Traylor; his daughter, Norma Lynne Traylor Theriot and husband, Terry of Breaux Bridge, La.; his son, Robert Edward Traylor; three grandchildren, Christen, Stephanie and Ryan; and three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Sara and Gabriel. Norman honorably served his country during the Korean conflict in the U.S. Army. He was a devoted Christian serving his Lord in many capacities within his church, Lakeside Baptist, and throughout the community while also monetarily supporting numerous charities. He was a member of a core group of men who were the backbone and pioneers in starting the Lakeside Little League during the 1960s. Norman provided for his family by working at Richmond Cooperative Milk Producers Association, Dairyman Inc., and the State of Virginia until his retirement. The family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Bliley's-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday with interment in Signal Hill Memorial Park. Odell "Toad" Padgett Toad Padgett, 93, a true American hero, lost his last battle Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010. He was the husband of the late Christine "Tiney" Cox Padgett for 62 years. As part of his legacy, he leaves a son, Charles Hill (Brenda); daughters, Connie Hall and Susan Padgett; grandsons, Charles Hill Jr. (Jan), Lindsey Hall and Nathan Hall; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Haley Hill. Other survivors include sisters, Doris Garner, Thelma Bell and Frances Gardner (Jack); lifetime friend, Alice Holzheuer; and caregivers, Sue Marose and Martha Lind. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bowyer Padgett, and best friend, Howard Holzheuer. Toad was a decorated veteran of World War II, having served in the 29th Infantry Division Company B. He survived the Normandy invasion landing on Omaha Beach June 6, 1944. He was later wounded and only survived because his friend Robert "Nice" Torrence carried him off the battlefield to safety. He spent the rest of his life being thankful to God, living his life as a devoted Christian, a loving husband, father, brother and friend to anyone in need. His true joy in life was helping others. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, at Heritage Funeral Service. Mrs. Gilbert was 101., Mrs. Gilbert was born on June 9, 1909, to Hamilton and Mary Chisolm on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina. She moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1944. Not only was Mrs. Gilbert known in her profession, cosmetology, but also for her work in the community with her husband, Jonathan Gilbert., Mrs. Gilbert was involved in a number of civic organizations including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and Charlottesville Beauticians. She also worked to integrate the local library and to establish housing in Charlottesville. Moreover, Mrs. Gilbert served on the Civic Advisory Panel of the University of Virginia Medical Center., Pernetha was also actively involved in her church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, as an Elder. During the 1970's, she visited Haiti as a missionary under Presbyterian auspices., Mrs. Gilbert was recognized by the Interfraternal Council in a "Tribute to African American Women of the Past, of the Present, and of the Future" in 1993. Hambrick Samuel Graham Hambrick, 65, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, in Marion. The world of natural beauty and the community of people were both extremely important to him, which he showed through dedicated public service of 38 years in the public school system of Smyth County as principal of Adwolfe, Chilhowie Elementary and Sugar Grove Combined Schools. His love for his community was further expressed by extensive volunteer service including Smyth County School Board member, Smyth County Tourism Board - the Bonham House, former board member of Big Brothers, Big Sisters, active member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Marion Morning, and 20 years as chairperson of the Naturalist Rally on Whitetop. Many of his friends knew him best as an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He graduated from Virginia High School and earned a B.A. degree from Emory & Henry where he became and remained an active member of Beta Lambda Zeta Fraternity. He received his master's in education from the University of Virginia. He was the proud parent of five children and husband of Catherine Hook Hambrick of Marion; three daughters, Ann Hambrick Shannon and husband, James Stephen Shannon of St. Louis, Mo., Elizabeth Page Hambrick and Chaney Carmichael Hambrick both of Marion; two sons, Matthew Graham Hambrick and wife, Elizabeth Nelson Hambrick of Homer, Alaska and David Zachary Hambrick of Lansing, Mich.; one sister, Betsy Hambrick Belew and husband, Sam Belew of Bristol, Tenn.; three brothers-in-law, Tom Hook and wife, Susan, of Phoenix, Ariz., William Page Hook of Boulder, Colo., and David Hook and wife, Chris of Richmond; two grandchildren, Christopher Ryan Shannon and Samuel Martin Hambrick; and two nieces, Beth D. HALE, Virginia Brown, age 94, departed her earthly life on October 11, 2010, at the Ashland Nursing Home and Rehab. She was preceded in death by her parents, Effie B. and J.R.C. Brown; her brothers, Callaway, Henry and Ralph Brown; her sister, Anne Gwaltney; her husband, Richard T. Hale; and grandson, Mark Hale. She is survived by sons, Richard Fred Hale (Betty) of Staunton and Michael Hale Elmont (Debbie); and daughters, Barbara Carr (Paul) of Elmont and Nina Hale (Smitty) of Quinton; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Virginia was a native of the Elmont area of Hanover County and enjoyed telling stories of her childhood about swimming in the Chickahominy River and riding the Richmond-Ashland trolley to Elmont School and later to Ashland High School. In her later years, she moved to Richmond and was a retiree from Richmond Public Schools, where she worked at Binford Middle School. The family will receive friends and family on Sunday, October 24, 2010, from 2 to 5 p.m. Services will be held on Monday, October 25, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home - Reid Chapel, with burial at Woodland Cemetery.
