Adrian West

Adrian Trevor West NORFOLK - Adrian Trevor West, 87, peacefully passed away Oct. 20, 2010 with his loving family at his side. After graduating from Norview High School in 1942, he attended the Maritime Academy at King's Point. He then served as a mate on various ships until the end of World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. He was retired from the Naval Supply Center Norfolk. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Edna; his daughter, Cheryl West of Norfolk; his son, Rick and wife Sue of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Kora and husband Jeremy Johnson of Virginia Beach; his grandson, Geoff and wife Dawn of Norfolk; and five great-grandchildren, all of whom called him "Granddear"; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norview Chapel. Albert G. Atkins VIRGINIA BEACH - Albert G. Atkins, 72, passed away Oct. 23, 2010 in his home. Born in Norfolk, he was the son of the late Pebbin and Pearl Atkins. Albert was a member of the Mill Run Golf Course in Moyock, N.C. Albert leaves behind to cherish his memory his two children, Timothy A. Atkins and his wife Diane of Mechanicsville, Va., and Theresa A. Parker and her husband Glenn of Aylett, Va.; five grandchildren, Patrick, Benjamin, Bryan, Shawn, and Joseph; and two sisters, Gloria Walker and her husband Huck of Chesapeake, and Shirley Van Horn, also of Chesapeake. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Mary Ellen Gies Atkins, and his brother, Herbert Foster Jr. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, in Rosewood Memorial Park with the Rev. Anna Greene Robinson Brice Anna Greene Robinson Brice, 90, peacefully departed this life Friday, Oct. 22, 2010. She was born Jan. 4, 1920, to the late John Greene Robinson and Gertrude Willie Hunter Robinson. She was the wife of the late George W. Brice Sr. for 55 years. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Tryphena, brothers, Oliver, Horace and Fontaine, and a granddaughter, Denise Brice Dale. Anna graduated from Campbell County Training School in Rustburg. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, where she served as an usher, member of the senior choir, and treasurer of the Sunday school. She leaves to cherish her memory three devoted sons, George Jr. (Dorothy), DuBois (Patricia) and Perry; two devoted daughters, Bonnie and Phyllis, of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren; ten great- grandchildren; one great- great-grandchild; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family would like to thank all the special caregivers. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, at Bethany Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gregory Dowell officiating, and the Rev. George Brice Jr. as eulogist. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Her remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Audrey Robinson

Audrey Robinson Audrey Robinson, a longtime resident of Warwick, N.Y., passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at the Schervier Pavilion Warwick. She was 80 years old. Born Oct. 31, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Evelyn (McDaniel) Dickey Sr. She was the wife of George Robinson. Audrey received her undergraduate degree in sociology from Shaw University, and her master's degree in Education from New Paltz. She was a school teacher with the Warwick Valley school system, teaching first grade for 26 years from 1961 to 1987. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, the AAUW, and the Warwick Reformed Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher. She is survived by her husband, George Robinson, of Warwick, N.Y.; a daughter, Jill Terry, of Norristown, Pa.; two grandsons, William Robert Terry II, of Philadelphia, Pa., and Matthew Robinson Terry, of Salt Lake City, Utah; a great-grandson, Ashir Terry; and three sisters, Kathryne Harris, of Lynchburg, Gladys Hilliard, of Tinton Falls, N.J., and Juanita Parham, of New Brunswick, N.J. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, at the Warwick Reformed Church, 16 Maple Ave., Warwick, N.Y., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will take place in Rosemount Memorial Park. Carl Ward III

Carl Bromsey Ward III NORFOLK - Carl Bromsey Ward III, 65, passed away peacefully Friday evening, Oct. 22, 2010 with his family by his side. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife Karen; a daughter Kimberly (Scott Burnette); a son, Carl B. Ward IV (Wendy); grandson, Brody; a stepdaughter, Stephanie Shurtz Porter (Beacher); brothers, Bubba and Wayne; niece, Jessica; and former wife, Alice Ward. Carl was born Oct. 7, 1945 to Veronica and Carl Ward Jr. who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his sister, Patricia and grandson Coley. A proud Holy Trinity, Norfolk Catholic, Ocean View boy, Carl excelled in academics, athletics and making friends. Bromsey became a member of the Pika fraternity and graduated from ODU in 1967. In 1978 he graduated from George Mason Law School while working full time. He made Law Review his third year and passed the Virginia State Bar on his first attempt. In 1967 he was hired as an intern with the Dept. of Navy. In 1971 he accepted a promotion in Washington, D.C., and was promoted to GS-13 level as one of the youngest GS-13s in the Navy. He continued his career with the Dept. of Justice and moved to NOAA as personnel director in 1984 where he stayed until his retirement in 2001. Carl will be most remembered as a fierce competitor on the golf course, a devoted friend and a man who loved his wife, children and grandchildren more than life itself. A verse from his favorite Jimmy Buffett song says it all: "Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way." A funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father Daniel Klem. A Christian wake service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at his church. Carolyn Elaine Osborne Harrison RICHLANDS, Va. Mrs. Carolyn Elaine Osborne Harrison, age 48, passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands. Born on July 11, 1962, in Richlands, she was the daughter of Frances Cordle Osborne of Doran, Va., and the late Ralph "Buster" Osborne. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Jake and Gertrude Elswick Cordle; and her paternal grandparents, Greely and Rhoda Crouse Osborne. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Richard Harrison; her mother, Frances Cordle Osborne; many aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends and neighbors also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Carolyn Elaine Osborne Harrison will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Va., with Rev. Catherine Sabin Catherine Sabin, age 95, an assistant librarian at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School in Alexandria during the 1970s, died September 29, 2010 at Goodwin House in Alexandria. She had cancer., Mrs. Sabin was a member of the Board of Lady Managers of Inova Alexandria Hospital. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the American Red Cross and Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Alexandria., Catherine Jones was born in Charlottesville and grew up in Culpeper. She graduated from George Washington University in the late 1930s with a degree in Library Science., Before her marriage to Archie R. Sabin in 1940, she worked at the Smithsonian Institution and at the YMCA in Washington. After her husband's death in 1972, she went to work for St. Stephen's & St. Agnes., Survivors include three sons, Samuel Sabin of Falls Church, Archie Sabin, Jr. of Arlington County and Roger Sabin of Fairfax County; and two grandchildren., A short graveside service will be held Wednesday, October 27, 2010 in Fairview Cemetery at 11 a.m. Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper is in charge of the arrangements.

Catherine E. Seager PRINCETON, N.J. - Catherine Elizabeth "Katie" Seager, 19, passed away Oct. 22, 2010. She lived most of her life in Princeton, N.J. Born in Barrington, Ill., she was the beloved daughter of David R. Seager of Montgomeryville and Elizabeth (McLarty) Seager of Wellington, Fla. Katie graduated from Montgomery High School in Skillman, N.J., and attended Montgomery County Community College, Blue Bell, Pa. She gave of her time volunteering with special needs children especially working in an equestrian program designed for those with autism. Surviving with her parents is a brother, Mack Seager of West Palm Beach, Fla.; her maternal grandmother, Patti McLarty of West Palm Beach; and paternal grandmother, Patricia Seager of Mesa, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Richard Seager; maternal grandfather, Kenneth A. McLarty and maternal great- grandparents, Cmdr. John Vogel and Mary M. Vogel. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service Thursday, Oct. 28, at noon in the Wayside Chapel of Whitemarsh Memorial Park, 1169 Limekiln Pike, Prospectville, PA 19002. Ethel M. Joyner PORTSMOUTH - On Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010 the eyes of God smiled down on our beloved Ethel Mitchell Joyner. Ethel was born in Petersburg, Va., to the late Louis and Eva Mitchell. Ethel had an underlying faith, a diligent servant of ministry in Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth, until illness prevented her full participation but not her concern. A longtime resident of Portsmouth, Ethel retired from the Department of Food Services of Portsmouth General Hospital. She leaves to cherish her precious memory, two sisters, Lucile Snyder (Abe), Fredericksburg, Va., and Gloria Jean Anderson, Pittsburgh; a host of nieces, newphews and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, James Joyner and brother, Lawrence Mitchell. Special thanks and appreciation are extended to an exceptional friend, Mrs. Dorothy DeSue and the one Ethel cherished as "my son" James "Jimmy" (Lydia) Simmons for modeling the role of loving and supportive caregivers. Evelyn A. Schikevitz DANIA BEACH, Fla. - Evelyn Avner Schikevitz, 87, passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 2010 in Hollywood, Fla. Born Aug. 31, 1923 in Cleveland, Evelyn spent the majority of her life in Portsmouth. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, David Schikevitz. Evelyn is survived by her two children, Mindy Runge and husband Richard Goldenberg of Hollywood, Fla.; and Ron Schikevitz and wife Kathy of Overland Park, Kan.; five grandchildren, Chris, Brian, Tabitha, Abby and Mollie; and four great-grandchildren, Emma, Aiden, Samara and Reese. She was a kind and generous woman who devoted herself to her family and her Jewish community. For more than 15 years, she worked side-by-side with her husband, David in the family business, David's Seaman and Marine Store at Pinner's Point in Portsmouth. She served for 13 years as the executive secretary at Gomley Chesed Synagogue Congregation. Evelyn enjoyed traveling throughout the world with David and friends and was an avid baseball fan cheering on her beloved Atlanta Braves each season. A graveside funeral will be held Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Gomley Chesed cemetery, 3603 George Washington Hwy., Portsmouth. Left to cherish his memory are his father, Melvin Mills, of Bedford; wife, Margaret (Maggie), also of Bedford; son, Geoffrey Mills, and wife, Amy, and grandsons, Nathan Mills and Caden Mills, of Peoria, Ill.; son, Jared Mills, of Golden, Colo.; son, Joshua Mills, and wife, Keri, of Centennial, Colo.; daughters, Carroll Martin, of Arlington, and Catherine Martin, of New York, N.Y.; brother, Ed Mills, and wife, Jane, of Batavia, Ohio; brother, Steve, and wife, Julie, of Vienna; sister, Jean Mills, of Centreville; sisters-in-law, Lis Turner, of Richmond, and Shelley Campbell, of Daleville; a multitude of friends he considered important members of his family; and everyone who ever heard him sing and play his saxophone. Born in Dennison, Iowa, on Feb. 4, 1941, he grew up in Pekin, Ill., and joined the U.S. Navy. After attending the U.S. Navy School of Music, he played in the Navy Band for the next four years. After the Navy, he attended Illinois State University, earning a bachelor's degree in music education. He formed his own dance band and performed throughout the Midwest. He also owned a music store, providing music and instruments to schools in the region, and sponsoring high school band competitions. After receiving his call into the ministry, he attended Dubuque Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. During that time, he served in the Wisconsin Conference of the United Methodist Church. After his ordination in Illinois, he served in the Central Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church. When he moved from Illinois, he worked in the computer business in Northern Virginia. Called back into the ministry, he served churches in several United Methodist conferences. Most recently, he moved to Bedford and taught at Liberty High School. Upon completion of his master's degree in counseling, he worked as a school counselor at both Liberty High School and Bedford Middle School. After retiring from the public school system, he became the headmaster of Bedford Christian Academy, and the pastor of both Laurel Grove and Peaks Presbyterian Churches. Throughout his life, he shared his love of music with everyone he met. We will all miss his love of life, music, and laughter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, at Tharp Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Ed DeBerry and Rev. John T. Salley officiating. Helen W. Meadows VIRGINIA BEACH - Helen W. Meadows, 79, went to be with the Lord Oct. 21, 2010. She was born Oct. 9, 1931 in Richmond, Va., the daughter of the late Walter A. and Anna L. Walters. Helen grew up in Rocky Mount, N.C. before coming back to Virginia. She received her undergraduate degree in teaching from East Carolina University and her master's degree from William and Mary College and taught school from 1953 to 1983 retiring with 30 years of service. Helen was a member of Lynnhaven U.M.C., enjoyed collecting stamps and worked with the braille association helping to put together bibles to be sent all over the world. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Steven Meadows, sister, Kathleen Franklin, daughter-in-law, Kristine Meadows and son-in-law, Jeff Keezel. Helen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who will be deeply missed by all. James Lind

James F. Lind VIRGINIA BEACH - Dr. James F. Lind was born the Nov. 22, 1925 in Filmore, Saskatchewan, Canada. His early years were spent in Keewatin, Ontario where he attended Keewatin and Kenora public schools. On graduation in 1943 he was awarded the A.L.O. Fife award. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a navigator during World War II and was commissioned as a pilot officer at the age of 19. After the war, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve and served as an air navigator and medical officer for 16 years. Dr. Lind graduated in Medicine from Queen's University in 1951 and was awarded the Medal in Surgery and the David Edward Mundell Prize in Surgical Applied Anatomy. He completed postgraduate education in surgery and gastrointestinal research in Canada, England and at the Mayo Clinic in the U.S.A. During this period he was awarded the John S. McEachern Fellowship of the Canadian Cancer Society and the George Christian Hoffman Award of Queen's University. Dr. Lind joined the faculty of the University of Manitoba in 1960 as a John and Mary R. Markle Scholar in Academic Medicine. He subsequently became professor and chairman of the Department of Surgery, surgeon-in- chief of the Winnipeg General Hospital and director of the gastrointestinal clinical investigation unit. In 1972, he became chairman and chief of surgery at McMaster University. After completing this term he became professor and chairman of surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School and director of surgery at Norfolk General Hospital. He also served as chief of surgery for Sentara Hospitals. Dr. Lind was president of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He was honorary president of the University of Manitoba Medical Student's Association. He was awarded the Dean's Outstanding Faculty Award, the Sir William Osler Award for excellence in teaching and the award for outstanding contributions to graduate medical education in Eastern Virginia. The James F. Lind Award in Surgery at EVMS was named in his honor. Dr. Lind was a member of many medical societies including: the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the American Surgical Society, Society of University Surgeons, Association for Academic Surgery, Canadian Association of Gastro- enterology, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Southern Surgical Association, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the Association for Surgical Education, American Medical Association, Virginia Medical Society, Virginia Surgical Society. Dr. Lind published 50 scientific papers. He gave numerous presentations and was visiting professor to many medical schools and hospitals in Canada and the U.S.A. His research endeavors were in the field of gastroenterology. His Fellows were awarded the Medal of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and the Award of the Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Lind was a skilled surgeon who was devoted to the care of his patients, and as an academic surgeon was intimately involved in the education of medical students and residents. He was Interim Associate Dean of Education, chairman of the curriculum committee and chairman of the medical education committee at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Lind had a lifelong love of music. He was an avid gardener who achieved master gardener certification during his retirement years. He was a member of Baylake United Methodist Church. Dr. Lind is survived by Dottie, his loving wife of more than 50 years, their five children: Heather (Scott) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; James (Catherine) of Virginia Beach; Dr. Scott (Barbara), of Augusta, Ga.; Dr. Robert (Diane) of Flemington, N.J.; Gregory (Kathleen) of South Plainfield, N.J.; and 13 grandchildren, one great- granddaughter and a sister, Agnes McDonald of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Jayne Redden Covington

COVINGTON, Jayne Redden, left us to dance in heaven on Friday, October 22, 2010. Born on the Eastern Shore of Md., she began her life of faith singing gospel duets in churches and at revivals with Norma Gober, one of her four sisters. She met her husband, George, then stationed at Chincoteague Naval Base, in church and remained by his side for 50 years. In 1998, she retired from First Virginia Bank concluding a lifetime career of banking. Beyond faith and family, the two things that gave her the most joy were cooking for her church and singing in the choir. Generous to all, quick to laugh and eager to play the fool, she will be missed beyond words by many. Known to family and friends as Mommom, she leaves behind her adoring daughters, Kristi (husband Greg), Lynn (husband Graham); grandchildren, Rachael, Luke and Courtney; two stepgrandchildren, Jon and Scott; and her sister, Norma. Her positive outlook, sunny disposition, and good humor endeared her to all she met. She was a loving and inspiring role model, aging gracefully and fulfilling her important role in the life of her immediate and extended family., Jean moved to the Colonnades in 1995 where she led a very active social life and enjoyed frequent visits with her family. In recent years, her favorite activity was playing bridge as often as six days a week with a group of wonderful friends and partners., She was born on December 31, 1915, in Charleston, West Virginia, daughter of Frank Jarrett Hill and Lillian Haines Hill of Alderson, West Virginia. Her father graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1906. Jean graduated from Charleston High School in 1934 and was married in 1938., In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Reginald Foster Woods Jr., who died in 1977; her infant daughter, Nancy Carolyn Woods, who died in 1947; and her sister, Mary Frances Hill Robertson, who died in 2003., She is survived by her son, Reginald Foster Woods III and his wife, Katharine Norden Woods, of Keswick. John A. Taliaferro VIRGINIA BEACH - John Ackiss Taliaferro, 85, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010. A loving husband and devoted father, John was born in the town of Virginia Beach Feb. 20, 1925. He was predeceased by his parents, Jack Bunce Taliaferro and Madge Ackiss Taliaferro and his sister, Madge Taliaferro Landis. A lifelong resident of Virginia Beach, John served in the Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a State Farm agent and retired after 35 years of service. He was an Eagle Scout, a lifetime member and past president of the Virginia Beach Jaycees and past president of the Virginia Beach Little League, charter member of the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad and long time member and past vestryman of Eastern Shore Episcopal Church. John leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 60 years, Vivian; his four children and spouses, Jeanne Schemering (Michael), Kem (Jean), Bob (Traci) and Alan (Barbara). He was the husband of Peggy Rose Anderson Woodell. Mr. Woodell was born in Fayetteville, N.C., on Oct. 24, 1926, a son of the late John Norris Woodell Sr. and Mary Wilton Woodell. He graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he played football. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a retired Lt. Leslie D. Edwards Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Leslie Durward Edwards Jr. died Oct. 22, 2010. He was always "Derry" to his family and friends. Derry was born in Raleigh, N.C., Sept. 26, 1936 to Leslie D. Edwards Sr. and Louise Bergeron Edwards. The son of a Coast Guard officer, Derry grew up all over the country, but his roots were in the south. He graduated from Fishburne Military Academy, and he spent his adult life in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. He managed and ran Virginia Materials Corporation until his retirement. Derry enjoyed many activities. He was a longtime member of the Virginia Beach Shag Club and Bayville Golf Club. At various points during his life he raced cars, sailed boats and piloted his own plane. Derry's family was small, but close knit. He will be loved and remembered by two daughters, Kelly Edwards MacDonald and husband Douglas, and Alisa Edwards Frenck and husband Eric as well as two grandchildren, Eleanore and Ian Frenck. Arrangements are being handled by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, and a service will be held at Princess Anne Memorial Park at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26. IRBY, Mary Virginia Woodson, 91, departed this life on Saturday, October 23, 2010. She was born in Narrows, Va., the first of four daughters to Lelia and E.E. Woodson. Mary graduated from Blackstone College for Girls and Radford College, and taught public school until she married Willie B. Irby of Blackstone. They reared five children, Daniel Hunter (Mary), Cornelia Hale (Mike), Edwin Woodson, Sarah Wesley (John), and Elizabeth Watts. She is survived by all of her children; a sister, Connie Smith; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary dedicated her life to Crenshaw United Methodist Church teaching there from the time she was a college student until nearly age 90. She served the Mary Virginia Irby Class, the local United Methodist Women, and Farmville District President of the United Methodist Women. She wrote and published "History of the Crenshaw United Methodist Church, the first 175 years." Mary was an authority on, and wrote the history of the stain glass windows in the sanctuary. She was a Trustee of Ferrum College. Her love of farm life was spread around Blackstone and surrounding communities with 25 years of cultivation of garden chrysanthemums, growing hundreds of thousands of gorgeous fall mums throughout the years. She served many years as Secretary to the Virginia Sheep Federation. Visitation will be held Monday evening 7 to 9 p.m. at the Crenshaw United Methodist Church. Services will be held in the VUMAC auditorium in Blackstone on Tuesday, October 26, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery. Norma Wayland Knight Norma Knight, of Longview, Texas went to be with her Lord, Jesus Christ on October 23, 2010 after a lengthy illness., Norma Wayland Knight was born October 11, 1930 in Occoquan, Va. to R.J. and Florence Wayland. She graduated from Osbourn High School in Manassas, Va. in 1949, and lived there for many years. While living in Virginia she worked as a bookkeeper in the family business of Wayland-Knight and also served as the head of personnel for Prince William County for 11 years. She was instrumental in establishing the Manassas Church of Christ and was very active with that congregation. Norma had the gift of hospitality and she offered her home, her services, and her love to many over the years., In 1978, she moved with her family to Longview, Texas where she was a member of the Alpine Church of Christ. She taught youth bible classes for several years and used her home style cooking to show her love to many friends. Later, she briefly lived in Plano, Texas, but returned to Longview to enjoy her grandchildren where she lived until her death., Norma loved her family, as well as her wonderful church family. She loved the holiday seasons, cooking for friends and family and cheering for her favorite sports teams. She was a very generous friend who showed her love through extravagant gift-giving and good conversation. She leaves a legacy of joy, faith and love of family., Survivors include her sons, C.A. Pernetha C. Gilbert, Pernetha C. Gilbert, died on Tuesday, October 19, 2010, at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville, Virginia. Mrs. Gilbert was 101., Mrs. Gilbert was born on June 9, 1909, to Hamilton and Mary Chisolm on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina. She moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1944. Not only was Mrs. Gilbert known in her profession, cosmetology, but also for her work in the community with her husband, Jonathan Gilbert., Mrs. Gilbert was involved in a number of civic organizations including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and Charlottesville Beauticians. She also worked to integrate the local library and to establish housing in Charlottesville. Moreover, Mrs. Gilbert served on the Civic Advisory Panel of the University of Virginia Medical Center., Pernetha was also actively involved in her church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, as an Elder. During the 1970's, she visited Haiti as a missionary under Presbyterian auspices., Mrs. Gilbert was recognized by the Interfraternal Council in a "Tribute to African American Women of the Past, of the Present, and of the Future" in 1993. Richard is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy; his son, Richard Rucker, and wife, Shari, of Newport News; daughters, Anita Creech and husband, Timothy, and Karen Korlach and husband, Patrick, all of Williamsburg; and two sisters, Hollis Yeatts and husband, Jimmy, of Bedford, and Estelle Layne and husband, Butch, of Madison Heights. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Timothy Jr., Lindsey, Jonathan and Lauren, and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. The family will receive friends following the service. Roland Edward Lewis Sr., of 932 Shields St., Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at Southside Regional Medical Center., Mr. Lewis was born on July 19, 1928, in Newark, N.J., to the late James and Helen Lewis. In the early 1940s, he relocated to Petersburg, Va., where he became a member of Zion Baptist Church., Mr. Lewis is a graduate of Virginia State University and did graduate work at, . He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and served in the United States Army. He was an educator in the Petersburg school system, teaching history, U.S. government and art for 30-plus years until his health began to fail., Mr. Lewis was predeceased by a brother, Duke Lewis, and his daughter, Dr. Geneva Elizabeth Lewis., Survivors include his loving and dedicated wife of 52 years, Thelma Stith Lewis; a son, Roland Edward Lewis Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Monica Cutno; four grandchildren, Roland Edward Lewis III, Duke Lewis, Charles Willis III and Taylor Willis; a sister, Marjorie Fisher; and a host of nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Sada Louise Clarke

CLARKE, Sada Louise, 92, died on October 23, 2010, in Richmond, Virginia, her home for the past 67 years. Although her parents were residing in Washington, D.C. at the time, she was born in 1918 while her mother was visiting her maternal grandparents, Emma Belle and William Henry Emerson, at Hodges, South Carolina. Sada Louise Clarke was preceded in death by her parents, Louise Emerson and W. Spurgeon Clarke, of the Mt. Carmel Community of Seaboard, North Carolina; and her sister, Kathleen Clarke Pearce of Atlanta. She is survived by her brother, William S. Clarke Jr. Col. USAF (Ret.) of Raleigh; and his son, William S. Clarke III of New York City; and his daughter, Elizabeth Stephenson Clarke of Washington, D.C.; her nephew, William Clarke Pearce of Buford, Georgia; and niece, Louise Pearce Hillenbrand of Columbus, North Carolina; and by her cousins, Carol Smith Bennett and Mabel Smith of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Maggi Bradon of Atlanta. Sada Louise Clarke graduated from Severn High School in Severn, N.C. in 1935, from Meredith College in Raleigh in 1939, and did graduate studies at the University of Richmond. She taught school in Wilson's Mills, N.C. before accepting employment with the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Virginia in 1943. There she completed a 40-year career as an associate agricultural research economist. Her achievements included the 1973 publication by the Reserve Bank of her book, "The Changing Face of Fifth District Agriculture," an analysis of the transition of agriculture during the quarter century 1945 to 1970 in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, most of West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. While at the bank, Miss Clarke also served on the Virginia Agricultural Credit Committee for many years, and in 1981 was honored by this committee and the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service with a plaque "for significant contributions in agricultural finance research." She was a member of First Baptist Church, Richmond. Her lifelong interests included women's basketball, which she played in high school and college; and men's basketball, in which she was a pioneer in the early 1940s by being one of the first women to coach a men's high school basketball team. She played and closely followed tennis, and was a lover of horses, horseback riding and horse racing. An avid bird watcher, Miss Clarke was a member of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and participated in several of the laboratory's Citizen Science Research Projects after retiring from the Federal Reserve Bank. She was for 18 years a burgess of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, and was a loyal supporter of Meredith College in Raleigh, which in 2003 named the Curriculum Classroom of its newly dedicated Science and Mathematics Building in her honor. Memorial services for Sada Louise Clarke will be held at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian, Virginia at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 27, 2010 and at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, North Carolina at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2010. A private interment will follow in the mausoleum of Raleigh's historic Oakwood Cemetery. Sada Louise Clarke was much loved by her family. She will truly be missed.
