Mrs. Bernice H. Browder, age 75, of 21203 Butterwood Road, Petersburg, departed this life Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. She was born in Dinwiddie County April 5, 1934, to the late Anderson and Vernell Harrison. Mrs. Browder was active in her church where she sang with the church choir and was on the Pastor's Aide Commity until her declining health. She accepted Christ at an early age and loved serving the Lord. She was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Lee, and her brother, James L. Harrison. Surviving are: her devoted husband of 56 years, Mr. Theodore R. Browder; one daughter, Betty Browder; one grandson, Marlon Browder; two great-grandchildren, Malaysia and Marlon Browder Jr.; one uncle, Mr. Edward Godsey; one aunt, Ms. Magaline Hopkins, both of Chester, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Ms. Erline Harrison LaSane and Ms. Elyse Browder; four nephews, Joseph, Earl, James (Jay) Winfield and James Harrison; two godchildren, Rasheda Harrison and Frances Dowling; several cousins and devoted friends. A homegoing service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Rocky Branch Baptist Church, Sutherland, Va. with the Rev. L.C. Robinson officiating. The interment will be in the church cemetery. A native of Bridgetown, Va., he was the son of the late George Samuel and Olevia Richardson Colonna. He retired from Wilson Trucking Inc. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, and was a 42-year member of the Exmore Ruritan Club. Other than his wife, he is survived by three grandsons, Jeffrey Johnson of El Paso, Texas, Chris Johnson and his wife Robbie of Vidalia, Ga., and Donnie Johnson of Jamesville; two great-grandchildren, Matt and Meagan Johnson of Vidalia; a brother, William Tyler Colonna of Onancock; and a sister, Georgia Colonna Arendts of Virginia Beach. Mr. Colonna was predeceased by a daughter, Peggy Colonna Johnson and a son, Joe Gale Colonna. Claudine L. Cox PORTSMOUTH - Claudine Leathers Cox was born Nov. 1, 1935, in Tarboro, N.C. She was the third of six children born to the late Dock and Bennie Wilkins Leathers. When she was about 5-years-old, her parents moved the family to Portsmouth. As a child, Claudine loved school and did very well academically. She made friends easily even though she was somewhat shy. Her friends led her to attend church at First Baptist South Portsmouth, where her parents eventually joined due to her enthusiasm. Claudine sang in the young adult choir, worked with Vacation Bible School and worked with youth. She attended Portsmouth Public Schools and graduated from I.C. Norcom and later from the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College. It was no surprise that she would choose to pursue a degree in education. While attending Norfolk State, she was a majorette (a "Golden Girl") with the band. Claudine began a career with Portsmouth Public Schools in 1960 and retired in 1997. Her last teaching position was with Churchland High School as an English teacher. Claudine loved her church and family and relished the time she spent with them. She attended Faith Evangelical Church of Portsmouth. She looked forward to weekly family reunions at her house on Sundays. Her husband, Leslie O. Cox Sr., parents and sister, Annie L. Redd Chavis, predeceased Claudine. She is survived by one daughter, Claudia Cox-Wynn; three sons, Leslie O. Cox Jr., David A. Cox and Antony J. Cox; grandchildren, Johnny Barrow-Cox, Faith and Christian Wynn, Jadira Leslie Jones, Demarcus Greene; special "daughters," LaNita and Rita; sisters, Lizzie L. Godley and Velma L. Brown (Redell); brothers, Isaac Marshall Leathers (Barbara) and the Rev. Marvin Leathers (the Rev. Phyllis Leathers) and many relatives and friends. Maxine E. Craig VIRGINIA BEACH - Maxine E. "Max" Craig, 70, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, surrounded by family. She was born Jan. 16, 1939, in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., to Idell Colley Davis and Mack Bentley. Maxine attended Morgan State University where she met her husband of 50 years, Ronald "Ron" Craig. Max and Ron lived in New York and Connecticut before settling in Virginia Beach, developing a large network of beloved friends. She retired from the Virginia Beach school system. She was a member of New Life Providence Church and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Maxine is survived by her husband, Ronald; daughters, Ronye Davis and Kendahl Craig, both of Virginia Beach, Bari Craig Tiggett of Conover, N.C.; son, Guy Craig of Baltimore; as well as her brother, stepmother, six grandchildren, sons and daughters in-law, sisters-in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. Maxine loved flowers, but those who wish to make a memorial donation to cancer research, are encouraged to do so. Mrs. Ferguson was in retail with Nachmans, LaVogue and Rices Nachmans. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Newport News, where she was a member of The Swinging Singers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell C. Ferguson; two brothers; and three sisters. Mrs. Ferguson is survived, and will be deeply missed by her daughter, Betty Ferguson Thomas and her husband Michael of Virginia Beach; her son, Willard F. Britt of Baton Rouge, La.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their appreciation for the love and care given to Allene by Dependable Care Givers, and to the staff of Our Lady of Perpetual Help during her stay there. He was born March 8, 1941, in Dinwiddie County to the late Joseph and Erlene Grandison. At an early age, he confessed Christ and became a member of the Rocky Mount Baptist Church, McKenney, Va., where he remained a faithful member until his health prevented him from doing so. There at his home church, he was an active member of the Usher Board. He was employed at Brett Aggretts Co. until his retirement. Harvey leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife of 49 years, Loretta Grandison of Stony Creek; three children, Roy Grandison (Lozella) of DeWitt, Va., the Rev. Roletta Banks of McKenney and Harvey Grandison Jr. of Stony Creek; one stepmother, Barbara Grandison of New York; six half-brothers, Norman Grandison, David Grandison, Lawrence Grandison, Bobby Grandison, Roy Grandison, all of New York, and Paul Grandison of New Jersey; two aunts, Herlene Flowers and Eleanor Sprately, both of Stony Creek; and one uncle, Willie B. Taylor (Mary Lee) of Dinwiddie. Melvin James NORFOLK - In the afternoon of Aug. 4, 2009, God gently called our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his waiting and loving arms. Melvin James, 94, a retired veteran and ordnanceman (A&E), was born Aug. 24, 1914, in Norfolk, and was the son of the late Levy and Georgetta James. He was educated in the Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1934. Before his illness, he was an active and faithful member of New Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, where he was involved with the Male Usher Board and Brotherhood. He was also a member of the Spare-time Fun-time Bowling League for Seniors. He was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine B. James. He leaves to cherish his memory four daughters, Brenda Morris (LaMar) of Norfolk, Sarelda James-Green of Chesapeake, Shelia J. Johnson (Joe) of Virginia Beach and Adriane B. James of Norfolk; a son, Keith James of Chesapeake; six grandchildren; one grandson-in-law; four great-grandchildren; a cousin, Estelle Pettus; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Col. Harold Leo Maurer (USAF Ret.), of Lexington, Virginia, died on August 4, 2009, at the age 90 of heart failure. Colonel Maurer was born in St. Cloud Minnesota on March 25, 1919. His military career included tours in Viet Nam and four years in Germany. He retired from the military in 1973 and from business life in 1985. His many interests included playing the guitar and banjo, sailing and reading history. Mary Jane Layton Oakes of Moneta, Virginia and Manasquan, New Jersey, passed away on August 4, 2009, after a long struggle against cancer. She is survived by Frank M. Oakes (Moneta, Va.), her loving and devoted husband of 59 years. Her life is celebrated by their two daughters, Robin Oakes Bebel and her husband, Dennis, of Charlottesville, Va. and LuAnn Oakes Lightfoot and her husband, Michael, of Bethany, Conn. Mary Jane was very proud of her four grandchildren, Nicholas Oakes Bebel (Worcester, Mass.), Sara Margaret Bebel (Charlottesville, Va.), Alexandra Oakes Lightfoot (Rosemead, Calif.), and John Robert Lightfoot (Bethany, Conn.) She was always glad to share good times with them. Mary Jane was born in 1928 to beloved parents, Albert (Jake) Crouse Layton (1899-1980) and Laura Gifford Layton (1903-1996). She resided in Wall, New Jersey for 64 years, sharing fun with family and friends at countless pool parties, back yard picnics and other family gatherings, as well as trips to Metedeconk, Mueller's Hill, Mac's Pond and her favorite Sea Watch beach. She spent countless volunteer hours at Allaire State Park working on historic and restorative projects. She was a devoted member of the Allaire Lady's Auxiliary. Upon retirement to Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, she carried on the traditions by hosting grand family reunions at the State Park where she adorned us all in homemade jewelry and faithfully scrap booked us into history. We love her spirit and celebrate the gift she has been to us all., In addition to her large family and many friends, Mary Jane had many Friends. As a lifelong member of the Manasquan Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) she enjoyed 15 years with the Busy Bees Sunday School class teaching the youngest children. She baked endlessly and organized the very successful Baked Goods table at the yearly Friendly Fair while Frank managed the burgers at the Food Table. Her light shines bright in that community., While retired at Smith Mountain Lake, Va., Mary Jane was an active member of the High Point Property Owners Association., Mary Jane is also survived by her siblings, Frances Bruno, of Manasquan, N.J., Ruth Ramsdell, of Spring Lake Heights, N.J., Doris Holloway, of Deerfield Beach, Fla. and Albert (Bub) C. Layton Jr., of Manasquan, N.J. Mrs. Ethel Naomi Scott, of Petersburg, Va., daughter of James and Mable Charity, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 3, 2009. Mrs. Scott was 84 years young, the widow of James Wendell Scott, and the eldest of 11 children, five of whom are living, Martha Shears, Clarence Charity, Catherine Wooden, James Charity and Roger Charity. Ethel Scott is survived by her three children, Edith Naomi Whyte and Harold Scott, both of Petersburg, Va., and Clinton Scott of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Scott lived a vibrant and full life. She was a native of Surry County, Va., born on Sept. 14, 1924. Mrs. Scott was affectionately known as "Big Mama" to the many generations she birthed, including 20 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Scott lovingly adopted several others into her life and family over the years who loved her dearly including but not limited to Mr. Billy Stokes, Mr. Larry Farley, Mr. Felton Tinsley, Ms. Tina Terran, Ms. Sanjena Scott, Mr. Robert Whyte, Mrs. Susie Kemp and Mrs. Patricia Parham. She humbly served her community as a foster grandparent for the City of Petersburg for nearly two decades, nurturing the lives of infants and youth alike. She was also a member of Trinity Baptist Church and the Solid Rock congregation. She diligently sang as a member of various local, gospel groups, most notably the Harmonizing Echoes and the Lafayette Larks. It is clear that Ethel Scott was indeed a good and faithful servant. Her family and loved ones are comforted and inspired by the investments she made in each of them to live an abundant life honoring God in all they do. WHITEHURST, Hazel Marie West, of Virginia Beach, passed away Saturday, August 1, 2009, into the loving hands of God, where she joined her husband, Maurice Edward "Billy" Whitehurst. She was born in Richmond, Virginia, married her sweetheart of six years at age 19 before he left to serve in the U.S. Navy in 1944. They moved to Norfolk in 1945 with their baby daughter after he returned from WWII, and were together for 57 years. Virginia Beach, where they lived for 51 years, became their final home together. Hazel was an accomplished seamstress, making clothes for family and friends, and especially for her daughter. She shared her gift by volunteering to make costumes for school plays or activities whenever needed. She was a volunteer mom, driving students on field trips, chaperoning, supporting the PTA and never missing a school event. She was creative and enjoyed a wide range of crafts, such as crocheting, upholstering and needle working. Hazel loved many different pets over her lifetime, and also the many animals and birds that visited her home. She planted a garden and kept up many flower beds every year. As a traditional homemaker, she chose to stay home, taking care of her family in every way, and creating a happy home. She was well loved during her life by her close family; her daughter, Priscilla Day and husband, Douglas Day; her two granddaughters Adrienne Day Kendrick and husband, Major William August Kendrick, and Jennifer Lynn Seiders and husband, Jason David Seiders; her six great-grandchildren, the greatest blessings and pleasure of her life, Ted, Cameron, Ian, Erin, Dylan, and Reilan. She is survived by two loving sisters, Helen Rose Bowman and Rebecca Carroll of Richmond and their families, as well as the families of her deceased brothers, Charles, Marshall, Woodrow and Elmo. She is also survived by Maurice's brothers and sisters, Pete, Alton, Annie and Margaret, and their families, as well as the families of his deceased brothers, Benny, Jack and Raymond. Hazel's life will be celebrated at a graveside service on Saturday, August 8 at 2 p.m. in Colonial Grove Memorial Park on Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach. On Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, Evangelist Gwendolyn Joyce Washington Weaver, age 62, was called to stop and rest, her job on Earth was done. Gwen crossed over to be with the Lord, one of his beloved servants, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, great-aunt and great-great-aunt. Gwen was a native of Petersburg, Va., and attended Petersburg Public Schools. She was born July 7, 1947, to the late Byron Douglas and Louvenia Turner Washington. She is preceded in death by a son, Bryant Washington; three sisters; three brothers; mother-in-law; and great-grandchild. Gwen was baptized at an early age at Metropolitan Baptist Church, under the leadership of the Rev. David A. Goodwyn, where she served faithfully in numerous ministries for over 40 years or more. She moved her membership to Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, where she was licensed to preach God's word. She graduated as a licensed beautician at LaRose Beauty School. She worked as a beautician at many shops. She served as a chaplain for Southside Regional Medical Center, she served meals to the homeless and needy on Hinton Street. She was formerly employed at Kenner Army Hospital, McGuire Veterans Hospital and Central State Hospital. Gwen loved working and helping others. She also worked as a CNA at Guardian Care and Westport Convalescent Center. She was a crossing guard for Petersburg Public School System, D.A.R.E. volunteer for Peabody School. Gwen leaves to treasure and cherish her memories a devoted husband, Leonard Weaver; five sons, Andre Washington (Bonita) of Petersburg, Va., Herbert Washington (Tracie), Maryland, Raymond Washington (Cynthia), Alonzo Washington (Rebecca), Charles Cheatham (Elizabeth), all of Petersburg, Va.; 20 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law; four sisters, Margie Thomas, Mildred Cheatham (Roy) of Baltimore, Pauline Wilkins, Paulette Burrows (Johnnie Ray), all of Petersburg, Va.; four brothers, Roy Washington (Elizabeth), Byron D.
