Isola M. Bell NORFOLK - Isola M. Bell, 84, died Aug. 17, 2009. She was affectionately known as "Ole Lady Bell." She never knew a stranger and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was born in Miland, Tenn., the daughter of Luther and Pauline Hall. She was the second child of 13 children. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Ida Gordon; her stepchildren, Betty Bell and William Bell; and seven siblings. She is survived by her husband, John L. Bell Sr. of Norfolk; two sons, Jessie S. Dancy (Claretha) of Jacksonville, N.C., and John M. Dancy of Norfolk; six grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach. Aug 20, 2009 PINE HALL, N.C. — Bobby Ray Hicks, 74, of 1050 Cody Drive, Pine Hall, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born Aug. 12, 1935, in Stokes County to Joe Hicks and Katie Bullins Hicks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dessie Sapp Hicks; a daughter, Pamela Smith; four grandchildren, Robin Martin, Michael Smith, Angie Smith and Matthew Smith; a brother, J.D. Hicks; and a sister, Margaret Knight. He retired from Seagors Water Proofing, and he was a member and deacon at Morning Star Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters, Rhonda H. Smith of Stoneville, Rebecca H. Martin of Madison, Toni Cobler of Spencer, Va., and Lisa Reeves of Eden; a brother, Donald Wayne Hicks of Pine Hall; two sisters, Linda Adkins of Pine Hall and Sheila Hawkins of Germanton; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Morning Star Baptist Church, Pine Hall, with the Rev. Tim Gentry officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Aug 20, 2009 A memorial service for Brenda Elaine Hylton, 58, of 5377 Liberty Hall Circle, Winston-Salem, N.C., who died Aug. 3, 2009, in Rome, Italy, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 107 Governors Lane, Martinsville, with James Cason officiating. She was born June 27, 1951, in Martinsville to Charlie L. Napper and Martha R. Millner Napper. She was preceded in death by her parents. She graduated from George Washington Carver High School in Fieldale and had retired from the U.S. Justice Department, where she worked for 30 years. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Winston-Salem and was a pioneer full-time kingdom proclaimer. Surviving are a son, Devone Hylton of Alexandria; two sisters, Nonna M. Deering of Axton and Annie N. Scales of Martinsville; and three brothers, Charlie L. Napper of Martinsville, George T. Napper of Durham, N.C., and Freddie J. Napper of Norfolk. Canary Sr.; daughter, Peggy Anne Peyton; grandson, Ryan Canary. Survivors include two children, Carole Newbill and Albert L. Canary Jr.; two sisters, Marie Spradlin and Mary Nicholas; six grandchildren, Deborah Lindsay, Michael Newbill, Ben Canary, Shirley Peyton, Douglas Peyton and Delvie Peyton Jr.; numerous other family members and friends. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 20 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, Laburnum Chapel, where funeral services will be 10 a.m. on Friday, August 21. Aug 20, 2009 The funeral for Charlie Quincey Jamison, 77, of Martinsville, who died Aug. 16, 2009, was held Wednesday at Norris Funeral Services with Pastor Calvin Holdren officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park with military honors and flag presentation by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. Pallbearers were George Jamison, Tim Jamison, Perry Hylton, Greg Hylton, Eddie Hylton, Daryl Peltier, Junior Hopkins, Richard Belcher and Harold Belcher.


 


 

Charlton, Paul A.

He married Josephine Gilbert on June 28, 1947. They enjoyed 38 wonderful years together until Jo passed away on June 17, 1985. Paul lovingly cared for Jo throughout her journey with Alzheimer's and was lost without her. The Lord blessed Paul again when he began a beautiful friendship with Virginia Wagner. Their friendship brought joy to both of them. Paul was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Jo Charlton; special friend, Virginia Wagner; two brothers, Ralph Charlton and Jack Charlton; and a cousin, Tom Charlton., He is survived by his daughter, Paula Charlton; a niece, Elizabeth (Mike) Norton; and nephew, Ralph L. Charlton. He is also survived by his "adopted" children, Beth Schramm, Lisa Bolen, Angie and Rad Patterson; as well as "adopted" grandchildren, Lucas and Amber Bolen, Conrad, Katy and Maggie Patterson, Amy Walters, and Brian Yelverton. Paul had a special furry friend Sweetie who will miss his Paw Paw. He is survived as well by special friends, Patsy and Henry Staton, Phyllis and Junior Tomlin, Joann and Fred Yelverton, Dottie Hostetter and Lewis Graybill, Frances and Bob Wagner, Charlotte and Henry Schrieber, Dolly and Jim Wagner; and special friends from church, Betty Jo Garrett, Everett Entsminger, Andrew Hellmuth, and Hannah Garrett., Paul was a member of the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church and served as deacon. He loved the church and attended regularly until health issues kept him from doing so. He was retired from Burlington Industries. Paul enjoyed people and loved his job as a greeter at WalMart and worked there for five years. He had a strong work ethic and looked upon each job he ever had as a blessing from our Lord. He loved flowers and gardening and was known to plant as many as 100 tomato plants each summer. The only activity Paul loved more than the gardening was sharing the bounty of his gardening with others., Great appreciation is given to the nursing staff at Golden Living Center for their loving tenderness and care of Paul. CHRISTIAN, Mary Delores, a native of Richmond, Va., was born on March 26, 1942 to the late Julia Jefferson, Memnan Martin and the late Althea Hinton (grand-mother). She entered into eternal rest on August 15, 2009. She attended Richmond Public Schools. She worked for and retired from M&B Head Wear. Mary was born in Summerton, S.C., and moved to Richmond, Va., at an early age, where she met and married Robert Anderson Christian Jr. (deceased). They were blessed with five children through this union, Sharon D. Christian, Deneen L Christian (deceased), Robert A. Christian III (wife, Nichole), Kimberly A. Christian (deceased), Diane M. Christian; four grandchildren, Domonique Christian-Lewis, Breuna Lawrence ,Thearon Seay Jr. and Corey E. Ida Marie Cipriano, Ida "Ede" Cipriano, 91, formerly of Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 17, 2009, at her home in Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville, Virginia., She was born September 7, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the oldest of four children. She graduated from Overbrook Senior High School, then worked several years as a legal secretary before marrying her husband, Fred Cipriano. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this past February., The couple lived most of their lives in the New Jersey/ Pennsylvania area, where she managed her husband's custom home building business. While living in Longport, New Jersey, she became a local sponsor for a Miss America contestant for two pageants. During her years in Drexel Hill she was a member of Saint Bernadette's Catholic Church, president of the Women's Club of Drexel Hill, a Girl Scout leader, a volunteer at Delaware County Memorial Hospital's gift shop, and a caregiver to an aunt and uncle who had no children of their own., She is survived by her loving husband, Fred L. Cipriano Sr.; one son, Fred L. NORA MILDRED DEHART FLOYD-Nora Mildred DeHart, 90, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Skyline Manor Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by three brothers and eight sisters. Nora was a long time member of Tuggles Gap Baptist Church. She retired from Floyd Garment Factory after many years of service. She is survived by: her sister and brother-in-law, Reva and Alvis Reed; special niece and caregiver, Patricia and husband Frank Davis; numerous nieces and nephews. Duncan, Dorothy McGehee Duncan, 78, of Troy, Virginia, died on Monday, August 17, 2009, at home., She was born February 7, 1931, in Charlottesville, Virginia, the daughter of the late Willie Scott and Lora Starks McGehee. Her husband of 49 years, Raymond Lewis Duncan, died in 1998. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Helen May McGehee and Virginia Gay McGehee Craven., Mrs. Duncan was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the ., Mrs. Duncan retired in 1992 from the Department of Health and Human Services, Social Security Administration, after 35 years of service. Aug 20, 2009 The funeral for Eugene Grant "Trooper" Spencer, 91, of 271 Arrowhead Circle, Spencer, who died Aug. 18, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Stanfield-Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Scales officiating. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for a half-hour before the service Saturday and other times at the home of his daughter, Jeannette S. Hairston at 18500 A.L. Philpott Highway, Spencer. Spencer was born June 13, 1918, in Henry to Charles C. Spencer and Lucy Matthews Spencer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Lowe Spencer; four sisters, Mamie McBride, Jeannette Taylor, Helen Mitchell and Paulina Borden; and two brothers, Julius Spencer and Jake Spencer. He retired after 35 years as an insurance agent with North Carolina Mutual Life. He was a lifelong member of the Sheriff's Institute and was a member of Christian View Baptist Church, where he had served as church treasurer and on the deacon board. Surviving, in addition to his daughter, is a son, Jake M. Spencer of Ridgeway; and one grandchild.

She was born in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Feb. 24, 1926, and was the daughter of the late Henry Woodfin Phillips Jr. and Inez Ardrey Phillips Bowe. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Donald T. Fantone Sr.; her sons, Donald T. Fantone Jr., and Philip W. Fantone; her sister, Mildred P. (Nancy) Redfern; and brother, Henry Woodfin Phillips III. She was a member of Star of the Sea Catholic Church since 1942, where she was married by Father Philip Brennan. She was a former member of the International Order of the King's Daughters and Sons, Seaweeds Circle, and United Daughters of the Confederacy. She is survived by her brothers, William D. Phillips of LaCrescenta, Calif., and Samuel C. Phillips of St. Augustine, Fla.; her children, Shirley F. Adams and Michael D. Fantone of Virginia Beach, Margaret R. Fantone of Ashburn, Va.; her grandchildren, Dean Fantone, Tony Fantone, Alex Adams, Sarah Rouse, and Elizabeth Fowler; and her great-grandchildren, Elaine, Emma and Ella Fantone, Tony Jr. and Baylor Fantone, Jack and Lily Rouse, Eric, Sam and Kate Fowler, all of Virginia Beach. FORRESTER, Ivan Edward, 86, of Powhatan, passed away on August 18, 2009, after a brief illness. He was born May 15, 1923, in Mountain City, Tennessee. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1940, where he fought in World War II. After four years in the Navy, he joined the U.S. Air force, serving for 26 years, retiring in 1970 as a Chief Master Sergeant. Ivan was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Phyllis J. Forrester; daughter, Rita G. Forrester, of Powhatan; two sons, Ivan E. (Mike) Forrester Jr. and his wife, Cheryl, of Colonial Heights, Timothy S. Forrester and his wife, Carolyn, of Palmyra; two grandsons, Logan Forrester and Thomas Forrester, both of Palmyra. She was the owner and creator of Story Highway, an internet- based business for the promotion of creative writing and poetry. She was active in the Republican Party in Virginia and many charitable organizations. Survivors include her brother, Eric J. Freeman, M.D., and his wife Ragan of Norfolk; sister, Valerie Samsell and her husband Darryl of Greensboro, N.C. She is also survived by her nephew, Brian Samsell and his fiancée Erin Thomas; her nieces, Alexandra and Ariel Samsell; and many loving and caring friends. Carolyn Frantz Gephart, 49, of Lafayette, Ind., died at 7:20 a.m. on Monday, August 17, 2009, at Clarian Arnett Hospital following a three year battle with breast cancer. Born on January 24, 1960, in Atlanta, Ga., she grew up in Salem, Va. She was the daughter of Bouldin and Clarice Frantz of Roanoke, Va. She was married to Jay S. Gephart on August 13, 1983, in Roanoke, Va., and he survives. He currently serves as Director of Bands and Orchestras at Purdue University. A teacher and professional musician, Mrs. Gephart was a graduate of Salem (Va.) High School and received her bachelor's of music education from the Indiana University School of Music. She taught public school in Columbus, Ga., and Schaumburg, Ill. She played oboe in the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra for 15 years and taught private music lessons throughout her career. She and her family attended Faith Baptist Church and were members of Covenant Presbyterian. Surviving, with her husband and parents, are four children, Samantha Ruth, Molly Elizabeth, William "Will" Bouldin, and Elizabeth "Libby" Clarice, all of Lafayette; a brother, Tommy; and sisterin-law, Paola Frantz, of Salem, Va.; and aunts and uncles, Lanier and Thecla Frantz, of New Castle, Va., Joy and Spencer Frantz, of Salem, Va., and Hume and Ann Coleman, of Tallahassee, Fla. A 1946 graduate of Burdett College in Boston, she worked for the Royal Typewriter Company before starting her family. Ann is a Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES) Victory Chapter No. 16 in Chesapeake and a lifetime member of the OES Chapter No. 14 in Melrose, Mass. She was a member of the Tidewater Flutterbys, a Tower Mall Walker, and a volunteer for Portsmouth Pride. Until a few years ago, Ann was tireless in the hours she worked as office assistant at the Cradock United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, where she also served as a church trustee. Ann enjoyed spending time with her fellow Eastern Star sisters and friends and would drive them to meetings and errands. She enjoyed shopping and was a lunch time regular at the Wendy's at Victory Blvd. and George Washington Highway in Portsmouth. As a Charter Member of a dinner club we created, "The Chopstick Club," she regularly joined family and close friends at local Chinese restaurants on Friday evenings. The family will receive friends today, Aug. 20, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway, Chesapeake, who is in charge of arrangements. She was born in Jackson, Tennessee on March 19, 1911 to the late Henry W. and Mary Alice Warren. She was the widow of John Broox Norfleet Sr. and Thomas Duke Irvin. She was also the loving mother of John Broox Norfleet Jr., Sarah Grace Gower, Robert Jay Norfleet, and Betty Chaplin. Evelyn was the firstborn of 10 children and is survived by two sisters, Marie Deshazo of Como, Mississippi and Elizabeth Lynn Crawford of Williston, Tennessee; and one brother, Phil Warren of Memphis, Tennessee. Also surviving are her children, Betty (Fred) Chaplin of Chesterfield and Robert (Joyce) Norfleet of Chester; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and a loving second family in Germantown, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her late husbands; her son, John B. Norfleet Jr.; and a daughter, Grace Gower. Evelyn was the retired co-owner of Hearse and Ambulance Sales, Inc., Norfleet American and Cycleland. She was a devout Christian, and her love of the Bible were the stepping stones of her life. In her later years, she became devoted to gardening and a love of flowers. During her life's journey, years were spent in Tyro, Mississippi, Memphis, Tennessee, Chester, Virginia, Germantown, Tennessee, and ending in Chesterfield, Virginia. LONGAN, Robert Coleman Jr., MD, died August 18, 2009. A native of Richmond, Va., he was the son of Robert C. and Ellie S. Longan; the husband of Alice V. Longan; and the brother of William J. Longan, all preceding him in death. His children are Robert C. Longan III and wife, Chris, of White Stone, Va. and Jane R. Caldwell and husband, Turner "Corky", of Cartersville, Va. His grandchildren are Susan Omberg, Pamela Howard, Caroline Caldwell and Amanda Longan; great-grandchildren, Patrick and Claire Omberg; and nephews and nieces. He was a graduate of John Marshall High School, the University of Richmond and the Medical College of Virginia. He had numerous internships in his training in psychiatry. They included Jersey Medical Center, the Medical College of Virginia, the University of Virginia and a Fellow and instructor at John Hopkins University. He was a World War II veteran serving as a captain in the U.S. Army. He was in private practice for many years in Richmond, was a member of the Richmond Academy of Medicine, the Medical Society of Virginia, the Neuropsychiatry Society of Virginia and the American Psychiatric Society, and a former member of the State Hospital Board appointed by Gov. Thomas B. Stanley. He was a clinical associate professor at MCV, established the Psychiatric Division of Richmond Memorial Hospital, and was a former president of the Memorial Guidance Clinic at Richmond Memorial Hospital. Before retirement, he was an attending physician at McGuire VA Hospital, Stuart Circle, St. Mary's and Westbrook Hospitals. A private family funeral service will be held. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Colonel James Norwood; two sons, Barry and James Norwood Jr.; one daughter, Lieutenant Colonel Cynthia Norwood; one grandson, James Norwood III; two granddaughters, Pryce and Galyn Norwood; two sisters, Charlsie Caywood and Dianne Bushnell; two brothers, Thomas and Julian Campbell; and hundreds of beloved friends and family. She was preceded in death by her father, James Campbell; and mother, Annie Hanchey Campbell; sister, Kathleen Harper; and a brother, Fred Campbell. Jimmie Lou was a member and volunteer for 25 years at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, The Bellwood Women's Club, The Daughters of the American Revolution, the USS Montague AKA 98 Reunion and the Antique Study Group. She also loved to travel. Jimmie Lou was the quintessential Army wife, moving over 30 times in 15 years. Her husband passed away on April 5, 2000. She was an avid Bridge player and a long-term volunteer for various charitable and educational organizations which include: The LSU Medical Center, Shreveport, La. (Meritorious Service Award), Our Lady of Consolation Residence, Amityville, N.Y. (Diocese of Rockville Centre, N.Y., Merit Award), Sister Margaret's Food Pantry and Clothing Closet of Shreveport, La. Survivors include her son, James P. O'Hanlon and his wife, Angela J., of White Plains, N.Y., and Viera, Fla.; her daughter, Sheila A. Smith and her husband, Ray, of Charleston, S.C.; six grandchildren, Angela C. Tinnirello and her husband, Christopher, Christine G. Bonchick and her husband, Michael, Michael Thompson and his wife, Rosary, Patrick J. O'Hanlon and his wife, Stephanie, Craig Thompson and his wife, Jeanne, and Erin Thompson; nine great-grandchildren, Angel Rose Tinnirello, Gabrielle Tinnirello, Liam Thompson, Brendan Thompson, Sarah Bonchick, David Bonchick, Leah Bonchick, Dashiell O'Hanlon and Beckett O'Hanlon. On Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, Miss Shanté Latasha Willis departed this life at VCU/MCV Medical Center in Richmond, Va. Shanté was born on April 21, 1991, in Newark, N.J., to Lois Willis and Bobby Anderson. She moved from East Orange, N.J., at the age of 7 to Petersburg, Va. Shanté was a high academic achiever. She received several awards and was an honor roll student. She was also an active participant in softball. Due to her illness, she later received her GED from the Petersburg School System. Shanté accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Blessed Hope Community Church and was later baptized. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lewis and Mary Pollard; uncle, Nathan Bryant; and niece, Tiyonna Johnson. Cherishing her fond memories, she leaves her mother, Lois; two sisters, Shawniece and Sharetta; five brothers, Ronald, Ricky, Rahjon, Rayshawn and Rahlee; two aunts, Palma and Cheryl Bryan; three uncles, Stephen (Mittie), Kevin (Sharon) and Warren; one great-great-aunt, Mary Lively; four nieces, Tishanna, Khadijah, Jannia and Kamryon; three nephews, Zyiheed, Trevon and Quashawn; best friend, Chiquila Crenshaw; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Vaughn, Raymond Joseph

Raymond Joseph (Ray) Vaughn, of Roanoke, Va., entered into eternal rest the morning of August 18, 2009, with his family at his side. Ray fought a courageous battle with cancer for six years with little complaint. He was a man of strong faith and lifted everyone up who knew him with a smile and encouraging word. Born on November 14, 1937, to the late Clyde Joseph and Nellie Nunn Vaughn, of Claudville, Va., in Patrick County, Ray joined the Navy at a young age and traveled around the world several times. During his distinguished 21 years serving our country, Ray received numerous awards and honors including, the Good Conduct Medal with a gold star, Navy Achievement Medal with a gold star, Sailor of the Year (1970), and Vietnam and Lebanon Service Medals. He served on various ships including the first nuclear aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Enterprise and is a Plank Owner of the U.S.S. Annapolis AGMRI as an original crew member., and subsequent manufacturing career took him and his family to various places to live, including the Panama Canal Zone, Texas, California and North Carolina. He moved to Roanoke, Va., for a second time in March 2000 and began another career as a Roanoke County school bus driver. Ray drove buses for seven years until his health began to fail. The students on Bus #5 from the Cave Spring lot bought him much happiness and joy., Ray was a member, deacon and Sunday School teacher of Cave Spring Baptist Church. He was happiest when sharing the Word of God with his dear Sunday School class. Ray also enjoyed meeting his dear friends every Tuesday at Famous Anthony's at Oak Grove Plaza for breakfast and a bible study. They jokingly referred to themselves as the ROMEO club, "Retired Old Men Eating Out." He is a former member of the Valdese Rotary Club, Toastmasters of Hickory North Carolina, Ruritan Club, Lions Club, past Master Mason of Mountain Home Masonic Lodge and a current member of the Cave Spring Masonic Lodge., In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his two brothers, Gilmer and Billy Vaughn. He is survived by his wife, Donice Handy Vaughn, with whom he shared 48 years and the same birthday; daughter, Kathryn (Katie) and husband, John Varney, of Roanoke; and daughter, Karen Vaughn, of Herndon, Va. His daughters brought him great joy and happiness especially with their music. Grandsons, Jared Ray Varney, is a rising junior at VMI, and John Caleb Varney, is a rising sophomore at Cave Spring High School. Ray is also survived by his stepmother, Gladys B. Vaughn, of Danville; sister, Irene Byrd Worrell and husband, Dennie, of Collinsville, Va.; stepsister, Janice V. Rakes and husband, Danny, of Danville; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Vipperman Vaughn and Nancy Vaughn Stewart. Also surviving are brothers-in-law, Hassell Handy, Garland Handy, Charlie and wife, Betty, Leon Handy and wife, Nellie, Billy Handy and wife, Deb, and the late Wilbert D. Handy and wife, Carlene; and sisters-in-law, Elise Hodges, Betty H. Biggs and husband, David, and Mary H. Young and husband, David. Ray leaves behind several nephews and nieces and great-nephews and nieces all of whom were very dear to him., A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, August 21, 2009, at Cave Spring Baptist Church. Warner, Charles W.H.

WARNER, Charles W.H., of Warsaw, formerly of Tappahannock, passed away Sunday, August 16, 2009, following a long illness. He was the son of the late Dr. Charles Andrew Warner and Gladys Roy Hoskins Warner. Charles Warner was a graduate of the College of William and Mary and George Washington University. In early adult years, he was a school teacher in the Northern Neck and later a historian with The National Park Service in Jamestown and Yorktown, then promoted to supervisory historian of Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites in New York State, and next promoted to superintendent of Sitka National Monument in Alaska. Due to his parent's illness, he returned to Virginia to manage family businesses. Charles Warner was the leader in having 14 historic buildings in Tappahannock placed on the Virginia and on the National Register of Historic Places as The Tappahannock Historic District in 1972 and 1973. These buildings cover a period of 300 years in interpreting the history of the town. He was the author of Road to Revolutions: Virginia's Rebels From Bacon to Jefferson, 1676-1776 and Hoskins of Virginia and Related Families. These books have been reviewed throughout the United States and in England. In October 1972, The Virginia Magazine of History stated that Road to Revolution, "contains what may be the most balanced view" of the pre-Revolutionary political debate. Of his book, Hoskins of Virginia, a writer for the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Rappahannock Times wrote, "This is one of the books that will grow in value each year and will be inestimable value to future historians." The Genealogical Quarterly of London, England, wrote, "This book has been competently and authentically compiled and provides a major contribution to American genealogy." Charles Warner was also a member of the Jamestowne Society, The Society of the Lees of Virginia, The Baronial Order of Magna Charta, The Friends of Saint George's and Descendants of Knights of the Garter. In later life, Charles Warner lived in the Northern Neck, having inherited Accakeek Farm in Richmond County from his father. In 1981, he married Anne Dudley George Hagerty, of Smithfield in King and Queen County. Charles W.H. Warner is survived by his wife, Anne Hagerty Harp Warner; two stepchildren, Reno Sheffer Harp IV and Anne Harcourt Harp Vaeth; two sisters-in-law, Meriwether H. Rumrill and Susannah H. Farley; two stepgrandchildren, Emily Harcourt Vaeth and Gregory Benjamin Vaeth Jr.; six nephews and two nieces. He was predeceased by a sister, the late Elizabeth W. Trible. George Michael Watts VIRGINIA BEACH - George Michael Watts, 39, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, after sustaining injuries during a traffic collision. Born July 28, 1970, in New York City, Michael spent his early years in New Jersey. He would later move to Virginia Beach where he lived until his untimely passing. Michael was the son of George Elmer Watts and Claudia Gordon Watts. He was preceded in death by his mother and two half sisters, Wilma Ellis and Elvin Dargan. Michael is survived by his father; two sons, Miles Watts and Mickey Watts; three half sisters, Brenda Wiggins, Renée Spivey, and Bonita Griffin; two brothers-in-law, William Spivey and Gerald Griffin; two nephews, Tracy Wiggins and Jason Ellis; three nieces, Stephanie Buffalow Brown, Fostina Ellis, and Jennifer Ellis; a special friend, Diana Porter; and many other relatives and friends. Beverly Seay Williams, 68, of Hebron, Md., and formerly of Buena Vista and Leesburg, Va., passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2009, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md., after a lengthy illness. Wilson, Gertrude Manning

WILSON, Gertrude Manning, passed away on August 17, 2009. She was born Gertrude A. Sears on August 25, 1917, in North Carolina, to John Mordecai Sears and Ellen West Sears. After her mother died in the 1918 - 1919 influenza epidemic, she was adopted in 1920 by James A. and May M. Manning. In 1933, she graduated from Boydton High School and subsequently entered State Teachers College (now Longwood University), graduating in 1937. After marrying Charles Staples Wilson in 1947, she lived and taught history and English in Farmville, primarily at Prince Edward Academy, until her retirement in 1982 concluded a career of over 40 years of teaching. She was preceded in death by her husband, four sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her son, Dr. Charles S. Wilson Jr., his wife, Pam; and her grandson, Robert M. Wilson. Gertrude enjoyed a long happy life, which included a love of family, travel and the gift of being a skilled conversationalist and listener. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Puckett Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at Farmville United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 19.
