Armstrong James Dennis Armstrong, 61, died on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. He was born in Smyth County to the late Edward and Mary Sue Cahill Armstrong. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and was retired from Reynolds Manufacturing. Survivors include four sons, Mark Lamont and wife, Angie, of Ireland, Stephen Frye of Chilhowie, Shane Tolbert of Saltville, Brandon Armstrong and wife, Jamee, of Chilhowie; one daughter, Kelly Edmiston and husband, Rick, of Abingdon; three brothers, Ed Armstrong and wife, Mona, of Abingdon, Robert Armstrong and wife, Brenda, of Austinville, and Michael Armstrong and wife, Kathy, of Chilhowie; three precious grandchildren, Tanner Armstrong, Lily Edmiston, and Delilah Armstrong; many special aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, and friends. John W. Brinkley SUNBURY - John Walter Brinkley, 62, of the 900 block of Highway 158 East, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, in Chowan Hospital, Edenton, following a courageous 3-year battle with cancer. Mr. Brinkley was born in Gates County and was the son of the late Bennie Aaron and Earlie Byrum Brinkley. A retired supervisor from Union Camp Corp., now International Paper in Franklin, Va., after 33 years of employment, he was the owner and operator of Brinkley's Lawn Care and Landscaping, serving customers all over northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. He was a faithful member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church and the Partners in Christ Sunday School Class. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Fowler and a brother, Marcelle Brinkley. Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Ann Spruill Brinkley; three daughters, Gina B. Brown and husband Glenn of Cary, Tammy B. Jenkins and husband Jay of Chesapeake and Lisa B. Wiley and husband Wayne of Clayton; three sons, Quintin Chappell and wife Melissa of Edenton, Will Chappell of Greenville, N.C., and Alex Chappell and wife Samantha of Sunbury; eight grandchildren, Olivia, Bella, Carli, Brooke, Ethan, Hudson, Caleb and Chloe; a sister, Bessie Lee Gardner of Suffolk; and two brothers, T.J. James Brian Cleveland BELL ARTHUR - Mr. James Brian "Jim" Cleveland, 44, of the 2400 block of Beaver Creek, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009. Mr. Cleveland was born June 1, 1965, in Franklin, Va. He graduated from Southampton High School in Courtland, Va., and from Wilson Technical Community College as a diesel mechanic. He worked with Greenville Utilities for 10 years. Jim was as Eagle Scout, a volunteer with Troop 25, a member of the Buick GS Club of North Carolina, and supporter of the NRA. He was a member of the Farmville United Methodist Church. He loved fishing and hunting, and was a loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Ann Doughtie Cleveland of the home; sons, Brian Cleveland and Jamie Cleveland of the home; parents, Paul and Pat Cleveland of Courtland, Va.; sister, Jan Aleshire and husband Jimmy of Courtland; mother-in-law, Evelyn Doughtie of Roanoke Rapids; brother-in-law, Emery Doughtie and wife Yvonne of Roanoke Rapids; nephew, Kevin Owens of Courtland; and niece, Lauren Doughtie of Roanoke Rapids. James Ryan Dobbins VIRGINIA BEACH - James Ryan Dobbins, 74, died Aug. 13, 2009, in Richmond, Va. He was born in West Virginia and had retired from the U.S. Navy as a commander. During his military career from 1958-1985, he served on VF-141, VF 151, Project Air Development Squadron Four and GMU-141, VF-154, VF-121, Cruiser Destroyer Group Two, and Naval Air Force Atlantic Fleet-Special Assistant Force Personnel. On Monday, August 10, 2009, William R. Dooley Sr. known to all as (Billy) departed this life after a short illness. William "Billy" was born February 25, 1938 to Geraldine Thomas. Billy was the oldest of three sons, he was educated at Christiansburg Institute in Montgomery County. Billy joined the United States Air Force as Fireman in 1955, he returned to Christiansburg In 1959. In 1963 Billy was joined in Holy Matrimony to Marva McMillan, to this union four children were born. Billy worked for many years at Lynchburg Foundry, Christiansburg Garmet Factory and L&N Cleaners. Billy was proceeded in death by his daughter, Robin Dooley and his stepfather, William Thomas. He was born July 15, 1921, in Axton to James Robert Bray and Virgie Wilson Bray. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Eva Bell Barbour Bray, who died Oct. 13, 2007; and three sisters, Winnie Ashworth, Mabel Simmons and Geraldine Riddle. He retired from Pannill Knitting in 1984 as a stock coordinator. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are a son, James Robert Bray of Axton; two daughters, Dottie B. Blair of Whitmell and Brenda B. HOLZBACH, David Thomas "Hawg," 76, of Snohomish, Wash., formerly of Richmond, Va., passed away on July 23, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice J.; mother, Margaret H. Bowles; father, Thomas A. Holzbach and his cat, Punky. David was born and spent his youth in Richmond, Va. At age 20, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and completed his training at Parris Island, S.C. as a Corporal. He served his country stationed in Hawaii, and later in Korea. David worked many years in electrical work all over the east coast and parts of the midwest, finally settling down in Snohomish, Wash., where he eventually retired from the Snohomish County PUD in 1997. He was active with the IBEW Local 77, and Local 245 out of Toledo, Ohio. David was very dedicated to his work and his family. David leaves behind his two loving daughters and their families, Kristina Holzbach-Burch, her husband, Hank, and their children, Natasha, Nadia, and little Hanky, and Kirsten Holzbach-Schuman, her husband, Curt, and their children, Beau and Cole. David also leaves behind his sons, Erik, Mark, and Michael Holzbach; his granddaughters, Leigh Ann, and Lynn Bower of Michigan; his sister, Sally Jones and her family, Martha Carol, Cooke, and Jack, all of Va.; aunts, Lorimer Holzbach , of Florida and Sophie and Dorothy Holzbach of Virginia. |
Carol T. Houseman Carol Tarter Houseman, 68, of Roanoke, formerly of Wytheville, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, after a courageous 22-year battle with cancer. Funeral service was held Thursday, Aug. 13, at 10 a.m. at Oakey's East Chapel with Pastors Gary Houseman and Tim Craft officiating. She was a member of Bonsack United Methodist Church, Botetourt Country Club and Botetourt Ladies Golf Assoc. She had a passion for golf, gardening, camping and any form of water recreation from the mountains to the sea. She enjoyed each and every day to the fullest. Her greatest accomplishment in life was in the lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her parents, George E. Tarter and Dorothy T. Tarter, both of Wytheville; and two brothers, George E. Tarter Jr. of Roanoke and Wayne J. Tarter of Wytheville. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Dillard "Dee" Houseman of Roanoke; two sons, Guy D. Houseman of Wytheville and Curtis J. HUNDLEY, Nancy Stuart, of Boydton, Va., passed away peacefully on August 13, 2009. She embraced life and was known for her quick wit and generous nature. A member of the Poetry Society of Virginia, she had several poems chosen for publication in their anthologies. With over 40 years of writing, she published 60 poems. An avid reader, she funded the children's room addition to the Boydton Library in memory of her mother, Zadie Stuart Hundley. Her education included Boydton High School, Stuart Hall (Staunton) and Madison College (Harrisonburg). She was a longtime member of United Daughters of the Confederacy, a league bowler in Richmond, and shop manager at May Fair House and assistant manager at Jones' Restaurant. Hobbies included teaching tennis, fly fishing and playing Canasta and Rook. She loved driving her dune buggy all over town and hosting Boydton Day activities in her yard. Nancy is survived by her brother, six nieces and nephews, numerous great-nieces and nephews; cousin, Ann Keith Hundley Brame; and many friends. Funeral services will be Sunday, 3 p.m., at Watkins Cooper Lyon Chapel. Interment will follow in the St. James Episcopal Church yard. Ollie Calvin Meeks Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Ollie Calvin Meeks Jr. of Virginia Beach, formerly of Spotsylvania, Va., departed this life Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, following a short battle with cancer. He was 69. Known as "Junior" or "JR" to most of his family and friends, he will be greatly missed. He was born October 1939 to the late Ollie Calvin Meeks and Martha Daniel Sprouse (Meeks) of Louisa, Va. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Shirley Ann Barlow and his only sister, Shirley Jean Thomas. Junior worked for Safeway stores for 27 years and 15 years with Food Lion before retiring in 2006. After his retirement, he enjoyed visiting family and reconnecting with many old friends. He also enjoyed the companionship of his close friend Donna Manning and accompanied her on several trips across the country. He is survived by three daughters, Kathy Lynn Wertz and her husband Mike of Chesapeake, Beverly Leigh Oden and her husband David, and Tracey Elaine Martin, all of Virginia Beach; five brothers, Henry D. of Spotsylvania, Paul H. of Warrenton, Allen B. of Michigan, Roy F. and Charles P., both of Fredericksburg; his grandchildren, Christopher and Heather Wertz, Courtney, Candice and Ryan Oden, Alexis and Natalee Martin, who truly were the light of his life; as well as many loving sisters-in-law; nephews and nieces. SMITH, Walter P. Jr., 90, of Sandston, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Twiford Smith; brother, Stuart Smith; and sister, Kathryn Adams. He is survived by four children, William S. Smith (Diane), Elizabeth "Betty" S. Schutte, Nancy S. Lickey, Walter P. Smith III (Dot); eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Walter attended school in Richmond, Cass Tech in Detroit, Advanced Aviation Engineering in Chicago and Burbank and VCU in Richmond. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Aviation branch during WWII, 1941 to 1945. Walter was an Architectural Service Rep for U.S. Plywood Corp., opened his own business, Architectural Wall Systems Inc., and then operated as a General Contractor. He was a longtime member of Corinth UMC and a Master Mason of Sandston Masonic Lodge for 57 years. He was active as a volunteer in many civic organizations, including the Boy Scouts, Ruritan Club, the Lay Witness Mission Program, and he had a passion for the arts: writing poetry and stories and designing sculptures and driftwood flower arrangements. Walter was also an avid salt water fisherman and loved the water and boating. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., with a Masonic service at 2 p.m., on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, Va. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2009 at Corinth United Methodist Church, 23 West Williamsburg Road, Sandston, Va. Percy Cardwell On Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, God saw the road was getting tough so He called his child home. Percy was born Feb. 21, 1948, to the late Luke and Queen Arlene Graham Cardwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Ernest, and five sisters, Annie, Rachel, Mary, Mildred and LaJaynetts. He leaves to cherish his memory one brother, James "Popeye" Cardwell, of Roanoke, one sister, Magdalean Cheatham, of Lynchburg, a devoted niece, Ardelia Charlton (Clayton), of Lynchburg and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She married David L. Marlowe of Kings Mt., N.C., that same year. They were parents of Leslie Karen Marlowe, who was born in Gastonia, N.C., in 1965. Later they divorced. Dixie taught art and Spanish at Norcross Middle School for 30 years. She retired several years ago and lived in Marietta, Ga., for many years.
