Karl Morck Jr., Ben's paternal grandfather, was a jeweler and inventor of a practical bifocal lens. His oldest daughter was Ben's mother who married Benjamin H. Brinton. Ben Sr. started a brokerage firm in New York City and served as treasurer of the New York Stock Exchange from 1935 until 1940. Ben Jr. is survived by his wife of 45 years, Virginia Clarke White Brinton; his younger brother, William Morck Brinton and wife, Mary Jane Wyman Brinton; and many nieces and nephews. He accompanied Dr. Frank Buchman, founder of MRA, now called Initiatives of Change, and 200 others to Asia. They performed five plays that encouraged democracy: first in India, then in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Ben and Virginia were married in 1964, and he obtained his Master's degree in French at the University of Virginia and taught at Patrick Henry College in Martinsville, Va. and for five years in the U.K. He worked again for Moral Re-Armament (IofC) when he and Virginia returned to Richmond by distributing MRA publications, which became Grosvenor Books, USA, under the leadership of J. Terence Blair. He taught English as a second language in the Richmond Public Schools. Ben and Virginia moved to Lakewood Manor 10 years ago. While living there, he read stories to a second grade class at Ruby Carver Elementary School. Ben greatly enjoyed his many hobbies: tennis, swimming, chess, and playing his harmonica. He was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, singing tenor in the choir and active in the TGIF Friday breakfasts. He was a past member of the Kiwanis Club and the Order of St. Luke, a healing order through prayer. Ben's chief aim in life was to be a peacemaker personally and globally. Barbara Ann Delaney of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2009. She lived her life surrounded by friends; her life partner, Rick Church; and mother, Theresia Robertson. In addition to Rick and Theresia, she is survived by cousin, Olli Wank; and two stepsisters, Sandra Robertson and Bonnie (Jack) Wrigley. A Roanoke resident since age five, Barbara graduated from Cave Spring High School, and attended Wake Forest University on scholarship. She had the audacity to converse in Latin, and this razor fine intellect continued throughout her life. Barbara started her business career as Accessories Buyer for Sydney's chain of women's clothing stores. In the early 1980's, she began a real estate career, becoming a Real Estate Broker specializing in the Old Southwest Historic District, most recently with Park Place Realtors. As a graduate of REALTORS Institute, a Certified Residential Specialist, an Accredited Buyer Representative and e-PRO, Barbara served the Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors (RVAR) on the Education Committee for over 20 years and taught Fair Housing for new members of the association for more than 10 years, as well as serving on the Cultural Diversity Task Force in 2003. Stories about Barbara are full of her wit and humor, and references unfailingly speak of her ethics and integrity. The family wishes to especially thank Julie Watt and Carilion Hospice, as well as Barbara's angel, Pam Eades, for their kind and crucial care. A celebration of Barbara's life will take place 4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at the Gish House, 641 Walnut Ave., S.W., in Highland Park. Bean, Betty Lee Cleveland View/Sign Guest Book Betty Lee Cleveland Bean Betty Lee Cleveland Bean, longtime Lynchburg resident, died Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at Lynchburg General Hospital of complications from pneumonia. She was 86. Betty Lee Cleveland was born August 21, 1923, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the middle of five children. She attended the Hillsdale School for Girls in Cincinnati and graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. On Oct. 14, 1943, she married George Martin Bean, a chaplain in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. Their first child, Elizabeth Tracy Bean (now Kenny) was born in February 1945. The Beans moved to Bethlehem, Penn. in 1947, when George Bean became chaplain at Lehigh University. There, Betty Lee Bean was a member of the Junior League, served on many boards and worked at the local hospital as a volunteer. Their second daughter, Lee Randolph Bean, was born in Bethlehem in August 1948. The family moved to Richmond, when George Bean became rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. The Beans' third child, William Cleveland, was born there in February 1954. In May of that year, the Rev. Bean was named chaplain of the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., appointed by President Eisenhower. While at West Point from 1954 to 1959, Mrs. Bean worked as a "Grey Lady," the name given to American Red Cross volunteers at the Post Hospital. She served on the board of the Junior League of Newburgh, N.Y. She became well known at West Point for two things: hospitality and golf. Chaplain and Mrs. Bean entertained small groups of freshman cadets, or "plebes," every Sunday afternoon, serving home-made sandwiches, pastries and "transfusions" (ginger ale and grape juice) to get to know the new cadets on an individual basis. Their personal connection to the Classes of 1958 and 1959 resulted in Chaplain Bean being named an honorary member of both classes, a distinction awarded to very few civilians. Chaplain Bean officiated at numerous Cadet Chapel weddings, and Mrs. Bean hosted a number of wedding receptions for close cadet friends and their new wives. On the golf course, Mrs. Bean won many golf tournaments while at West Point, and still holds the record for lowest score by a woman at the old West Point course. In 1957, Betty Lee and George Bean were invited to be guest of the Queen of England, where he preached at Westminster Abbey Cathedral and at the Military Academy of Great Britain, Sandhurst. The Beans then headed north to Scotland, where they played golf at the old course at St. Andrew's. The Bean family left West Point in 1959 and moved to Montclair, N.J., where George Bean became rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He served in that position for 10 years. While in Montclair, Betty Lee Bean was active in Altar Guild, The Junior League and the volunteer group at Mountainside Hospital. She also played on the golf team at Montclair Golf Club, which competed in the Metropolitan Golf Association and won numerous titles. In 1970, Betty Lee and George Bean moved to Lynchburg, Va., where he served as rector of St. John's Episcopal Church until he retired in 1983. During her years in Lynchburg, Mrs. Bean served on the Altar Guild at St. John's and in the Junior League of Lynchburg. She gave many years of volunteer service to the Virginia Baptist Hospital, where she served as president of their Auxiliary from 1980 to 1984. She served on the Virginia State Board of Hospital Auxiliaries for two years. Betty Lee Bean's enthusiasm for golf continued in Lynchburg. She played on both the Oakwood and Boonsboro women's golf teams, and served as captain for several years. After retiring from the ministry, the Beans traveled to Kenya, Hawaii and many locations throughout the United States. They spent a month each winter at the Surf Club in Marco Island, Fla. George Bean died on Jan. 31, 2004. Betty Lee Bean is survived by three children: Tracy Bean Kenny, Randy Bean and Bill Bean. Five grandchildren, Elizabeth Randolph Kenny (Stein), Erin Ramsey Kenny, Rebecca Leann Bean, Suzanna Lynn Bean (Hyle) and William George Isaac Bean. Four great-grandchildren, Marlena Gracie Stein, Ava Mae Hyle, Thomas Frederick Stein and Tanner George Stein. Private family services are pending. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Sunshine House at Centra, 1333 Oak Lane, Lynchburg, VA 24503, to the attention of Sharee Coates.
