She is survived by her children, Dr. John J. Bagley Jr. and his wife, Gwen, the Honorable Carol Bagley Amon and her husband, Thomas, Gayle Bagley Augst and her husband, Michael, Terrence M. Bagley and his wife, Cynthia; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Lorrie Donati Nissley and her husband, James. Adele was born in Richmond and grew up in Church Hill. She attended Westhampton College and graduated from Smithdeal Massey Business School. Before raising her family she worked at Reynolds Metals Corporation as an executive assistant. Adele was a loving mother and devoted wife. At the time of her death she was a resident of Westminster Canterbury. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday November 3, at St. Bridget Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Kathleen M. Brickley VIRGINIA BEACH - Kathleen M. Brickley passed away peacefully Oct. 31, 2009, at home with her loving family at her side after a 4-year bout with cancer. She was born Oct. 17, 1953 to the late Jack and Mary Schraepfer, in Sharon Hill Pa. Left to cherish Kathleen's memory are her husband of 31 years, James; three sons, Patrick of Los Angeles, Timothy of Lawrenceville, Va., and Brian of Virginia Beach; her twin grandchildren, Bryce and Haylei and their triplet sisters, Heidi, Lily and Caitlyn, and their parents Melissa and Mark Cooley; sister, Patricia Chapman and husband Jackie; four brothers, Paul and wife Kathy, Jack and wife Mary, Tommy and wife Michelle, and Michael and wife Peggy, all of Pennsylvania; also numerous nieces and nephews. Kathleen moved to Virginia Beach in 1987 as a Navy wife, and began what became one of her loves: Boy Scouts of America. As a Den Leader in Cub Scout Pack 475, she had 12 boys and three assistant leaders. "This is fun," she would say - that all led to taking on larger roles. Over the years they included staff member of day camps, Dad and Lad camping weekends, Scout Shows, Catholic Committee Retreat-o-ree's, Beaver Days and Tiger Days at Pipisco Scout Reservation and Committee Member of Troop 375 and Troop 363. She went on many weekend camp outs and long-term summer camps with the Troops which led to being selected as a member of the Order of the Arrow. She was also a member of the training team, Kempsville Roundtable Staff and director of the Webelos Leaders training for the last eight years, Pow-Wow's University of Scouting and District Dinners, the list goes on and on. Kathleen was always there to register you. Kathleen will be deeply missed in the Scouting family. A funeral will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. HARMON, Charles Bennett, 91, of Mechanicsville, Va., passed from this life on October 31, 2009. He was the son of the late Charles Barry Harmon and the late Emma Melton Harmon. He was born on June 28, 1918 and was a lifelong resident of the Richmond area. Mr. Harmon was a graduate of John Marshall High School. At the age of 16, he won the Richmond City Junior Tennis Championship in doubles. He bought his first investment rental property at the age of 18. Mr. Harmon was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a general contractor in Richmond for 30 years. He was a 52-year member of Fairmount Memorial Baptist Church, where he taught a Sunday school class for 20 years. Mr. Harmon was a member and past president of the East Gate Lions Club, served on the board of directors of the Glen Lea Babe Ruth League, was a member and past president of the Mechanicsville Pike Businessmen's Association, was a member of the Izaak Walton League of America, and was a 61-year member of Richmond Randolph Lodge #19 AF&AM, ACCA Temple Shrine, and the Scottish Rite Bodies. Mr. Harmon was also the grandson of a Confederate veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Marian Lowry Harmon; his daughter, Bette J. Harmon; and his sister, Emily H. Strange. He is survived by two sons, W. Barry Harmon and his wife, Linda, of Richmond and C. Rady Harmon of Mechanicsville; one daughter, Janet H. Dunnevant of Mechanicsville; four sisters, Geraldine H. Jordan of Escanaba, Mich. and Casa Grande, Ariz., Audrey H. Mayo of Venice, Fla., Mary H. Adkins and Ann H. Ring, both of Mechanicsville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Edward R. Davies PORTSMOUTH - Edward Ray Davies, 78, died Oct. 31, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. Born March 19, 1931, in Norwalk, Conn., he was preceded in death by his parents, James William and Catherine Davies, four sisters and two brothers. Ed served 22 years in the United States Navy and retired as a lieutenant from the Department of Transportation/ Elizabeth River Tunnel after 20 years. Ed was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church, the D.A.V., Police Association of Virginia, Moose Lodge No. 898, and Kentucky Colonels. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dixie Lee Davies; three sons, Kendall Ray Davies and fiancée Crystal Zook, Mark and Lisa Davies, and Keith A. Davies; three grandchildren, Casey, Chance, and Ean B. Davies; a sister, Loraine "Tootie" Gliffort; and beloved ex-daughters-in-laws, Arlene and Darlene Davies; and our "Special Mother," Mildred E. Doctor Paul Sahak (Mike) Derian, of Marion, Va., passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 31, 2009, at Smyth County Hospital Marion, Va., in the presence of his beloved wife, Beverley Birchfield "B.B." Derian and their children. Mike Derian led a long and colorful life. He had a distinguished career as an orthopaedic surgeon. A lifelong athlete and competitive runner into his 80's, he was an imposing presence in the local, state and national street and track running scene. Throughout his life, he was blessed with an extensive, loving family, devoted friends and the strong support of the Episcopal church community., Born July 25, 1922, in New York City, he was the first generation of Armenian and French immigrant parents. Mike attended public school and, following high school graduation, volunteered for the United States Navy and served as a pharmacist's mate during World War II., Mike attended the University of Virginia on the GI Bill. He completed his undergraduate degree in 1946, medical degree in 1951, and orthopaedic surgery residency in 1956; he was elected into the Raven Society and Sigma XI medical fraternity. He was also the proud captain of the UVA baseball team, where he played third baseman and outfield., Mike served as professor and chief of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Mississippi for 20 years. Throughout his tenure at the University of Mississippi, he was a fearless champion of the underprivileged. He suffered many criticisms and risks as he promoted racial equality, desegregation and equal medical care during the tumultuous Civil Rights era., In 1978, Mike moved to Marion, Va. to begin a private orthopaedic surgery practice. Shortly thereafter, he fell in love with and married Beverley Birchfield "B.B." Thompson and happily settled into the Marion community. He greatly enjoyed raising the three Thompson boys, Dan, Bill and Jim. Mike was a national figure in competitive tennis and running, and won many awards and medals throughout his late adult life. Mike had many friends, few foes and loved every aspect of living in Marion., Mike was preceded in death by an infant older brother, Arthur Bayenderian (d. 12/28/1919); his mother, Renee Marie Tabore Bayenderian (6/15/1895 5/8/1984); his father, Sahak Bayenderian (3/31/1891 6/29/1975)., Mike is survived by his wife, Beverley Birchfield "B.B." EDWARDS, Dr. John Richard "Dick," age 87, of Richmond, Va., passed away on Sunday, November 1, 2009. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of the late Dr. Thompson and Carmella Schlenn Edwards. Dr. Edwards was also preceded by his beloved wife, Lillian Solomon Edwards, and son, Alan Edwards. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army for four years during WWII. Dr. Edwards earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in vocal performance at Yale University and Indiana University, and his doctorate in historical musicology at the University of Iowa. He taught at the University of Mississippi, Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and for 20 years at Virginia State University, retiring in June of 1988. Upon his retirement, he was honored by being given the rank of professor emeritus for his long years of devoted service in the discipline of teaching, for exemplary performance in the classroom, and for distinguished work which was an inspiration to his many students. Dr. Edwards was also past director of publicity and past president of the Petersburg Symphony. He is survived by his children, Karen Packer and husband, Michael, of Petersburg, Rebecca Halpern and husband, Jack, of Henrico County, Va., and Steven Edwards and wife, Robin, of New York, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Born in Barnesville, Charlotte County, Va., on Sept. 13, 1923, she had been a resident of Newport News since early childhood. She attended Stonewall Jackson Elementary School, and after graduating from Newport News High School, she began a career in the insurance business which lasted over 50 years. She was a long-time, active member of the Insurance Professionals of the Virginia Peninsula. She was an Accredited Advisor in Insurance, and a Certified Professional Insurance Woman, with a specialty in auto and casualty insurance. She loved the conventions and conferences which were held all over the United States. She was known to say that after her death, no matter where she was, she was sure to be having a good time with the "dern old insurance women.", Florine was preceded in death by her parents, Eliza and Thomas McMahon; two sisters, Theresa Love and Mary Campbell;, and one brother, Thomas I. McMahon., She is survived by her sister, Virginia Baxter; and her brother, John P. McMahon; along with numerous nieces, grandnieces, nephews and grandnephews., Florine was a lifelong Catholic. HUDSON, Harvey Lee Jr., 88, died Sunday, November 1, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara D. Hudson. Born in Richmond, Va., on September 21, 1921, he was the son of the late Harvey L. Hudson Sr. and Mary Lillian Hudson. He is survived by his cousins, Laura Jane Dwyer of Richmond, Ruby Huffer of Harrisonburg, and Robbie Clatterbuck of Staunton; four children, Marcus P. Dickinson of Bahama, N.C., John R. Dickinson of Roanoke, William W. Dickinson of Knoxville, Tenn., and Anne Dickinson L'Orange of Windsor, Colo.; and nine grandchildren. Mr. Hudson graduated from the University of Richmond and was featured as the "morning personality" on WRVA in the 40s and WLEE in the 50s and 60s. He was well-known as a stage and show "Master of Ceremonies" and was a lifetime honorary member of the Azalea Festival of North Carolina. He was emcee of the Virginia Junior Miss Pageants in Roanoke and the Miss Richmond Pageant in Richmond for many years. Although many people knew him as a "radio, TV and stage entertainer," he began his management career with WLEE in 1948. He was the manager of WLEE Broadcasting Corporation, which later became Nationwide Communications Corporation. He was the Vice President and Manager of WLEE and Channel 8 TV for Nationwide. In the late 70s, he brought Channel 35 WRLH TV to Richmond. Mr. Hudson was also one of the founders of TVX Corporation, which became one of the country's largest independent TV operators in the 80s. A member of Epiphany Lutheran Church, a former board member of Richmond Rotary Club, Mr. Hudson was also an "Honorary Lifetime Member" of the Ashland Kiwanis Club. Mr. Hudson recently celebrated 70 years in radio broadcasting. In 1991, he founded and hosted a radio program on WTVR.AM and later WZEZ.FM called "Harvey Hudson's Passing Parade." This radio show continues to air Saturday mornings on WLEE. Most recently, he was heard and seen on numerous radio and TV commercials, and as part of the four public TV documentaries called "Memories of Richmond." The family will receive friends at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad Street, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, 2009. Born on June 15, 1926, in Farmville to the late Albert Marston and Sarah Paulette, she was one of 14 children., Being quite the adventure, Linda left home at the age of 18 to work in Richmond and Williamsburg. While working at a diner in Williamsburg she met the light of her life, Pvt. Hal Knife, and married him within the year. Linda became a career Army wife and truly loved and traveled with Hal wherever she could. Their union lasted 62 glorious years till Hal was called to his just reward in November of 2008., Linda was a PRN, doing private nursing duties and later received a floral design license. Linda and Hal also ran a small thrift shop in Lee Hall for several years before they both retired., Linda is survived by six children, Benjamin Knife of Regietertown, Md., Linda Roberts of Gloucester, Gary Knife of Lee Hall, Pamela Rossman of Williamsburg, Bea Lundy and David Knife of Newport News; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren., Linda was a kind and generous person who loved nothing better than her family., She will be thought of often and missed always. |

"Pop," 90, of Richmond and Callao, Virginia was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen Hale-Headley; his parents, Lindsey and Hilda Headley of Callao; his brother, Arthur Headley; and his sister, Garnet Headley. He is survived by four children and their spouses, his daughter, Bonnie and Mike Burger, and his three sons, Louis and Barbara Headley, Bill and Judy Headley, Dennis and Marilyn Headley; his sister, Julia Bowen; and his good friend, Bayne O'Brien. Pop is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and three nieces. All of us will miss him greatly. He was a skilled craftsman in carpentry, masonry, and cabinetry, and loved working with his hands, and continued working into his late 80s. GAYLE, Martha Lucile Poole, widow of Dr. Seth Gayle Jr. Col. U.S. Army MC, died October 31, 2009. She was born to Frank B. and Pricilla C. Pool on January 6, 1913 in Montgomery County, N.C. She grew up and was educated in South Carolina. She attended Winthrop College for two years before entering Nurses Training at Spartanburg General Hospital, Spartanburg, S.C. where she graduated in 1937. She did civilian nursing for three and a half years before joining the Army Nurse Corps in 1941 where she served for eleven and a half years and rose to the rank of Major. She earned the Bronze medal with two battle stars, European medal, and VE Day medal. Mrs. Gayle had two tours of duty in Europe (France and Germany) as well as numerous assignments in the States. In 1944 she went with the 116th Evacuation Hospital to France and Germany as Chief Nurse. The unit crossed the Rhine River on Easter Sunday of 1945 and later assigned to Dachau Concentration Camp the day after it was liberated. She often said: "If ever I did anything for humanity it was there." Her second tour of foreign duty came in 1949 and was assigned as operating room supervisor and assistant chief nurse of the Port Hospital at Bremerhaven, Germany. It was there that she met her future husband. Mrs. Gayle is survived by one son, Lynn P. Gayle, his wife, Linda; two grandchildren, Kelley E. and Sands A. Gayle; two stepchildren, Barbree G. Henderson of Baltimore, Md. and Seth B. Gayle of Richmond; five stepgrandchildren, Thomas S. Henderson, Gayle M. and her husband, Michael J. Maxwell, of Baltimore, Md., Albert L., Martin L., and Robert C. Gayle of Richmond; three great-grandchildren, Thomas K., Veronica G. Maxwell of Baltimore, and Nolan Gayle of Richmond; two sisters, Catherine P. Causey of Conway, S.C. and Jennie P. Curtis of Columbia, S.C.; one brother, John Milton Poole and his wife, Josephine, of Chesterfield, S.C. REGAN, Mattie "Leola," Carter, 102, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, October 31, 2009. A native of Chadbourn, N.C., she had been a resident of Chesterfield County, Va. since 1952. Leola was married to James Hugh Regan of Cerro Gordo, N.C. on May 23, 1925. She was a loving mother to seven children, one daughter and six sons. She loved children and assisted in the raising of many of her grandchildren. She has 17 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Leola was preceded in death by her husband, James Hugh Regan, and two sons, Lawrence Everett Regan, and Montgomery John Regan. Survivors include her daughter, Delores R. She was born Feb. 10, 1920, in Henry County to Nathan McGhee Smith and Mattie Clifton Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Floyd Thomas Trent; a son, Thomas Wayne Trent; three brothers, Ray Lee Smith, Gilmer Smith and Fred Smith; and two sisters, Lucille Warren and Doris Rakes. She was a longtime member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Trent Riddle of Galax; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred S. Nov 2, 2009 Robert Shelburne "Shell" Stowe, 70, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at his home in Fieldale. He was born May 19, 1939, in Patrick County to James Robert Stowe and Fredia Lawson Stowe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five half brothers, Walter Stowe, Arthur Stowe, Howard Stowe, Russell Stowe and Enoch Stowe; and three half sisters, Addie Smith, Hallie Corns and Mary Sue Macemore. He was a retired truck driver and part-time farmer and a member of Valley Drive Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Annie Hopkins Stowe; one son, Robert Stowe Jr. of Fieldale; one daughter, Sandra Evans of Fieldale; one granddaughter; one great-grandson; three sisters, Doris Tuggle of Patrick County and Beatrice Hopkins and Marie Hopkins, both of Fieldale; one half sister, Ada Gauldin of Martinsville; and a half brother, Otis Stowe of Patrick County. Bertha Beatrice Sinclair NORFOLK - Bertha Beatrice (Moss) Sinclair of the 900 block of Lexington Street, also known as BB, Bertha Beasley, Baby Bea, Beautiful, and B Louise, died Oct. 29, 2009, peacefully in her sleep at home after a long illness. She was 82. She was born in Norfolk on Feb. 10, 1927 to Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Moss. She was a very giving person who loved children and was always willing to help someone in need. She was loved by everyone who knew her. On June 25, 1954, she married Alex Sinclair Jr., a World War II veteran. He endured the battle with her and survives at home. They had a long life together that produced five daughters, Mattie Lee (Johnnie) of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., Rosa Burton (Johnnie), Alexazene Hitchcock (John), Gloria Sinclair (Randy) and Thomasine Cohen (Roy), all of Norfolk. Also surviving is her sister, Mary Powell of Baltimore. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Mattie, and brothers, Shirley, Allen, Charles, Lewis and Thomas Moss. She leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Dick Thompson, a pioneer in auto-racing public relations during nearly 40 years at Martinsville Speedway, died Wednesday, the track announced. He was 74., Thompson was working as a racing writer for The Roanoke Times in 1966 when the late Martinsville Speedway founder, H. Clay Earles, hired him to help publicize events at the track, said W. Clay Campbell, Earles' grandson and now the track's president., Thompson was the track's first public relations director and was only the second full-time public relations representative in NASCAR, the speedway said in a news release. |

Mary Susan Carter Witt Mary Susan Carter Witt, 56, of Lynchburg, passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009. She is survived by her husband, William Edward Witt. Born Oct. 31, 1953, in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Erskine Thomas Carter Sr. and Ruby Johnson Carter. She attended Hyland Heights Baptist Church.
