Frederick N. Barker Jr. COURTLAND - Frederick Nichlson "Ticky" Barker, 78, died Nov. 21, 2009, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A native of Franklin, he was the son of the late Frederick Nichlson and Susie Parker Barker and was predeceased by his sister, Betty Anne Fraser. He was a retired weight enforcement officer for the Virginia State Police and a member of the Virginia Fraternal Order of Police Robert A. Hill Lodge No. 56. CORKE, Charles Philip, 84, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 16, 2009. He spent most of his adult life and raised his family in Oakton, Virginia before retiring to Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Elaine Corke, and is survived by his two daughters, Kelly C. Pledger of Manakin Sabot, Virginia, and Kristi L. Schlegelmilch of Culpeper, Virginia; as well as his sister, Lorraine Lacey of Aurora, Colorado; and his grandchildren, Heather Bentley, Lindsey Schlegelmilch, Ryan Pledger and Hannah Pledger. Mr. Corke was born in Studley, Kansas on October 7, 1925 and grew up in Hoxie, Kansas. He was graduated from Sheridan Community High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 18, serving from July 1, 1943 through August 26, 1946 when he received an honorable discharge. His military career included service on the U.S.S. White Plains, CVE 66, a Casablanca Class air craft carrier which was engaged in combat operations throughout the Central Pacific during WWII. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific 1 Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon, and attained the rank of Lieutenant JG. He received his degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Nebraska and worked for the Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, for over 39 years, fostering a sincere love and respect for the Native Americans. He fell in love with and married Lois in Nebraska and they enjoyed over 60 years of marriage. A memorial service honoring Mr. Corke will be held on Monday, November 30, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the River Road Presbyterian Church, 8960 River Road, Richmond, Va. 23229 and he will be interred with his wife at 2 p.m. in the Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper, Va. CHARLES CITY - Charles Hill Carter Jr., "Hill," age 90, of Charles City, Va., passed away on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, after a long illness. He was born Aug. 16, 1919, at "High Hills" in Charles City County, Va.., Eldest son of Charles Hill Carter Sr. and Emily Harrison Carter, he received his early education in Charles City County before graduating from Virginia Episcopal High School. After high school he attended Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech), serving in the Corps of Cadets, and graduating with a degree in Agriculture in 1943. During World War II, he served with civilian defense. Upon Hill's return to Charles City in the 1940's, he was employed at Shirley Plantation by his cousin, Marion Carter Oliver. Upon Marion's death in 1952, Hill inherited Shirley Plantation and became the 10th generation to own and operate the estate. While continuing to farm the plantation, Hill began his tourism career in the 1950's, by opening Shirley Plantation year round to visitors. Also in 1950, Hill accepted an offer to complete an unfinished Charles City County Board of Supervisor's term. In 1991, Charles retired from the Charles City Board of Supervisors, after 41 years of service, the longest tenure record in the Commonwealth of Virginia at the time., After his marriage to Helle Klingemann on August 4, 1960, the couple made their home at Shirley Plantation. They raised their family on the upper floors while visitors toured the first floor. In conjunction with giving tours through the Great House, Hill Carter was a member of numerous committees and boards throughout his career. Hill was active in promoting tourism to the Commonwealth working with and developing several tourism organizations. She was preceded in death by her only sister, Helen Mills Antoniewicz., In her early years, Doris and family moved to Newport News and later to York County, where she resided the remainder of her life. Doris graduated from Morrison High School, which later became Warwick High School. She attended Mary Washington College, where she earned her Normal Professional teaching certificate. She taught in Yorktown Elementary School for 19 years before becoming a teacher in the Grace Episcopal Day School in Yorktown. Her love and concern for children brought great joy and pleasure to her life. She was delighted when, on many occasions, a former student would recognize her with kind memories of the past., Doris was a lifelong member of Grafton Christian Church, where she served in many capacities. She was a member of the church cemetery committee, which established perpetual care for the cemetery. She served as a Deaconess, Sunday school teacher and assisted in organizing the first young women's guild, which later became the Christian Women's Fellowship and is now known as Disciples' Women. She cherished the fellowship of the wonderful church members., She was a charter member of the Yorktown Woman's Club, a member of the York County Retired Teachers Association, and a charter member of the Waterman's Museum, where she was a volunteer for many years. RYAN, John Anthony Jr., of Richmond, passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2009 surrounded by his wife and four children. A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, Mr. Ryan served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and participated in four island invasions including Saipan and Iwo Jima. He attended the University of Richmond and graduated from Pennsylvania Military College (Widener University). He retired as a Vice President with J.B. Eurell Co. in 1986. Mr. Ryan was predeceased by his parents, Winifred and John A. Ryan Sr.; and a sister, Kathleen L. Ryan. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elaine Caravati Ryan; two sons, Terry Ryan (Lisa), and Tim Ryan; and two daughters, Maureen Ryan Williams (Steve), and Bridget Ryan Berman (Roger). Mr. Ryan is also survived by ten grandchildren. SAUM, James Baines, Lt. Col. USA (Ret.), 88, of Hingham, Mass., formerly of Rich-mond, died Sept-ember 28, 2009. "Jay" grew up in the Washington, D.C. area and graduated from the University of Maryland. During World War II he was an infantry officer in combat in France and Germany. After the war, he left the Army briefly, married, then rejoined the military to become a career Army officer. He served in many places in the U.S. and overseas, including Panama, Korea, West Virginia, Kansas, Hawaii, Vietnam, and Belgium. His career included a number of years stationed in Virginia, at Fort Belvoir and Fort Lee. After retiring, he lived in Windsor Farms for over 25 years, during which he enjoyed travel, antiques, cultivating roses, visiting relatives, and keeping in touch with many friends from his career in the Army. His wife of 62 years, Helen G. Saum, died in March, 2009. He was the father of James B. Saum, Jr. and of the late Timothy B. Saum, and the brother of Robert W. Saum and the late Hugh H. Saum, Jr. He is also survived by daughters-in-law Jean Byassee and Nancy Sodano; granddaughter Elizabeth Byassee Saum, and a number of nieces and nephews. Born in Manado, Indonesia, she was the daughter of Papa Ratuwalangon, who is the Pastor of Assembly of God Church in Indonesia, and the late Maria Ratuwalangon. She was employed for four years by Giorgio Mushroom Company, as an assembly line worker, and for three years she was employed by Elite Sportswear, as a seamstress and custom designer. She was a member of Spring Valley Church of God., In addition to her husband she is survived by her daughters, Joan and Belinda Ratuwalangon of Indonesia; and her stepdaughter, Antoinette Pussey of Hampton, Va.; along with two grandchildren. John Robert Mahala ABINGDON, Va. John Robert Mahala, 69, a loving husband, father, and No. 1 papaw, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 3, 1940, in North Carolina, but had spent most of his life in Washington County, Va. John loved his family and was a great dad and papaw. He also loved to fish and hunt. A lifelong resident of Newport News, Buddy was born on Oct. 5, 1924., He graduated from Newport News High School in Feb., 1943, and answered his country's call to service immediately afterward. Buddy was a member of the 661st tank destroyer battalion which was attached to the 69th Division in France. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhine River and Leipzig as a front line messenger and combat soldier. His Division was the first to meet up with the Russians during the Allied invasion of Germany. Before receiving his honorable discharge as a T-4 Sergeant, Buddy spent the last six months of his military service at the Army War College in Washington, D.C., Buddy graduated from the NACA-NASA Apprentice School in 1952. He began his 30-year career at NACA-NASA as an electronic instrument maker and retired in 1979 as an engineering technician with the Instrument Research Division., Buddy generously gave of his time working as a scoutmaster for the Deer Park Cub Scouts of America and as a baseball coach for Deer Park Little League, Pony League and Colt League teams. Throughout his life he loved sports. He enjoyed playing basketball, football, baseball, softball, golf and tennis. Boating and fishing were favorite pastimes. Bowling also played a large part in his life. While on leave after basic training in 1944, he met his future wife, Pauline, at the Sports Bowl Duckpin Lanes in Newport News. Buddy bowled on NACA-NASA leagues all through his working years and for 27 years after his retirement he and Pauline bowled with the Friday Fellowship League at Classic Lanes where they made wonderful friends., He was predeceased by his parents, Lemuel E. and Alethia Nurney Forrest; and his sisters, Sybil Goodman and Norma Craigs., Buddy is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 62 years, Pauline O'Neal Forrest, whom he married on Valentine's Day, 1947; their children, Wanda Carter and her husband, Carlton, and Gary Forrest and his wife, Martha; four step-granddaughters and five step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Estelle Keith; niece, Phyllis Fritschi; nephews, Ray B. and Dale Goodman; special cousins, Thomas Earl and Gerald Deans and William and Denise Nurney., The family will welcome friends today, Nov. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home in Hampton., At Buddy's request, a graveside service will be held on Monday, Nov. 23, at 3 p.m. in Parklawn Memorial Park. Michael "Mike" Massie Stevens Michael Massie Stevens, 43, of Madison Heights, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, in Lynchburg. He was the husband of Karen Layne Stevens. SMITH, Virginia Busk "Jenny", age 84, of Manassas, Virginia died Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Prince William Hospital, Manassas. In a lifelong list of accomplishments, she pursued many civic and educational passions. A graduate of George Mason University, with a subsequent Masters degree from the same university, she completed these studies after her own children had completed their college education. During her life, she served as President of the Junior Woman's Club of Manassas, a Director of the UDC, an original supporter and contributor to the Manassas Museum, a member of the Manassas Little Theater Group, the Prince William Hospital Auxiliary, and a devoted member of her church of nearly sixty years, the Grace United Methodist Church of Manassas. Jenny was a world traveler who never feared the unknown and had an insatiable desire to personally see the "8 wonders of the world" A goal she accomplished. She will be remembered and loved by so many lifelong friends and family. Her children and grandchildren who will forever remember her love, compassion, spirit, and her ability to focus her attention on each of them one at time! Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Christian Busk and Lillie Belle Methvin; and one brother, Fred Alley. Survivors include her loving husband of 64 years, Judge H. Costley, formerly of Sarasota, Florida, Amherst, Massachusetts, McLean, Virginia, Warren, Pennsylvania, Carmel, California, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to name a few of her favorite places to live, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 21, 2009, at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge., She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Richard J. Costley., She was born April 23, 1915, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the eldest of three children and only daughter of Grace Herron and Hugo C. Peterson. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by one brother, Dr. H. Harvey Peterson of Oakland, California., After graduating from Utah State University where she and R.J. met, over the years she taught English and creative writing to senior high school students. She found moving from place to place to be difficult because of RJ's World War II and civilian career transfers but treasured the numerous life-long friends they made. Discovering this, travel near and far became a choice activity for Virginia., Throughout her life, she enjoyed her gift for gardening. Her glance, her touch enriched both plants and flowers and her homes. She also was blessed with a lasting love of music and a passion for art and a well-written book. Except for her last move to Charlottesville, her piano always accompanied her., Virginia is also survived by her cherished family members, a brother, Daryl E.
