Barbara Dixon, 67, of 819 Hagan Ave., passed away on Nov. 22 after a courageous battle with cancer., Born July 24, 1942, in Norfolk, Va., she was the daughter of the late Hollis Briggs Sr. and Laura Barnes Briggs. She is the stepdaughter of Eva Mae Briggs (Currie, N.C.) and Thelma Briggs (Wilmington, N.C.). She is predeceased by her husband, Claude Dixon Jr., and sister, Evelyn Morris, both of Norfolk, Va. Barbara was a faithful and dedicated member of Friendship Baptist Church for 19 years, where she served as church trustee, church clerk and deaconess. Bron Duncan Jr. DAMASCUS, Va. Bron Duncan Jr., age 80, passed away Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn. He was a life long resident of Washington County, Va., and was a son of the late Bron and Annie Duncan. He entered service into the U.S. Air Corps for three years and then entered the U.S. Navy completing a total of 20 years of service. He retired from Columbus-McKinnon Corporation in Damascus and was a member of the VFW and American Legion. Mr. Duncan had spent many hours of community service serving on various committees for the town of Damascus. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Damascus. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Barnett and Valdia Barnett. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty M. Duncan; one daughter, Evelyn Duncan Sironko and her husband Philip T. James Bernand Bush Jr., 83, of Floyd, Va., departed this life on Saturday, November 21, 2009, following a long illness. Born and raised in Waynesboro, he was the son of James Bernard Bush Sr. and Grace Plank Bush. He served in the United States Navy and the U.S. Naval Reserve, and after graduating from Virginia Tech was employed until 1982 by the duPont Company in Martinsville. There he was active in the community and the Calvary Christian Church, but devoted the largest amount of time to the Boys Scouts of America and was Scoutmaster of Troop 75 for many years. After retirement he and his wife moved to Floyd County and were members of the St. Mark Lutheran Church in Willis. Reiordan, 83, died Sunday morning, Nov. 22, 2009, in the company of his wife of 62 years, Iona and his son, Bruce., Charles entered the U.S. Navy in January 1944, and was honorably discharged on April 1947. He moved to Richmond, Va., where he met and married Iona Sprouse Reiordan in June 1947. Charles and Iona lived in Richmond until 1960, when they relocated to Newport News, where they have resided and made a home for the past 49 years. CORKE, Charles Philip, 84, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 16, 2009. He spent most of his adult life and raised his family in Oakton, Virginia before retiring to Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Elaine Corke, and is survived by his two daughters, Kelly C. Pledger of Manakin Sabot, Virginia, and Kristi L. Schlegelmilch of Culpeper, Virginia; as well as his sister, Lorraine Lacey of Aurora, Colorado; and his grandchildren, Heather Bentley, Lindsey Schlegelmilch, Ryan Pledger and Hannah Pledger. Mr. Corke was born in Studley, Kansas on October 7, 1925 and grew up in Hoxie, Kansas. He was graduated from Sheridan Community High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 18, serving from July 1, 1943 through August 26, 1946 when he received an honorable discharge. His military career included service on the U.S.S. White Plains, CVE 66, a Casablanca Class air craft carrier which was engaged in combat operations throughout the Central Pacific during WWII. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific 1 Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon, and attained the rank of Lieutenant JG. He received his degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Nebraska and worked for the Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, for over 39 years, fostering a sincere love and respect for the Native Americans. He fell in love with and married Lois in Nebraska and they enjoyed over 60 years of marriage. A memorial service honoring Mr. Corke will be held on Monday, November 30, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the River Road Presbyterian Church, 8960 River Road, Richmond, Va. 23229 and he will be interred with his wife at 2 p.m. in the Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper, Va. 11/25/1933 ~ 11/21/2009 Helen Parker Chocklett, of Raleigh, N.C., passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2009. Born on November 25, 1933, in Roanoke, Va., she was the youngest child of M. Lacy and Helen Karns Parker. She graduated from Jefferson High School in Roanoke, attended Randolph Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, Va., and completed the course for College Women at Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City, N.Y. She married Harold Edward Chocklett, of Bonsack, Va., in 1955 and moved to Charlotte, N.C., where he was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. While her children were in high school she went to work part time for Celanese Corporation in Charlotte for several years before going full time with AC Controls Company, also in Charlotte, as Purchasing Manager for the next 28 years until retirement at 65 in 1998. She was predeceased by her husband in 1995 after 40 years of marriage. Surviving are their daughter, Marcia Montgomery and her husband, Michael, of Alpharetta, Ga.; son, Gregory Chocklett and his wife, Nancy, of Raleigh, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Jessica and Katherine Montgomery, and Parker and Christiana Chocklett. Clarence Ashby "Brother" Dowell GREENWOOD, Clarence Ashby "Brother" Dowell, a kind and gentle soul, departed this life on Sunday morning, November 22, 2009, at the age of 96., As well as being a hard worker all of his life, he was an avid outdoorsman, particularly enjoying fishing in the ponds and the rivers of Albemarle and surrounding counties and hunting in the pastures and the Blue Ridge Mountains near his home in Greenwood, Virginia., He was born on August 14, 1913, in Greenwood, the only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Eldon Dowell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Collins Dowell; and by two of his sisters, Louise Ellinger of Greenwood and Virginia Wood of Waynesboro., He is survived by his son, Robert Dowell and his wife, Ruby, of Crimora; his daughter, Sandra Baker and her husband, Robert, of Lyndhurst; and his daughter, Delores Smith of Greenwood., He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Beth Baker, Ricky Baker, Chrissy Smith Shaw, Ashby Smith, David Smith Jr., Molly Basili, and John Baber. She was preceded in death by her only sister, Helen Mills Antoniewicz., In her early years, Doris and family moved to Newport News and later to York County, where she resided the remainder of her life. Doris graduated from Morrison High School, which later became Warwick High School. She attended Mary Washington College, where she earned her Normal Professional teaching certificate. She taught in Yorktown Elementary School for 19 years before becoming a teacher in the Grace Episcopal Day School in Yorktown. Her love and concern for children brought great joy and pleasure to her life. She was delighted when, on many occasions, a former student would recognize her with kind memories of the past., Doris was a lifelong member of Grafton Christian Church, where she served in many capacities. She was a member of the church cemetery committee, which established perpetual care for the cemetery. She served as a Deaconess, Sunday school teacher and assisted in organizing the first young women's guild, which later became the Christian Women's Fellowship and is now known as Disciples' Women. She cherished the fellowship of the wonderful church members., She was a charter member of the Yorktown Woman's Club, a member of the York County Retired Teachers Association, and a charter member of the Waterman's Museum, where she was a volunteer for many years. She also served on the board of the York County Meals on Wheels., Doris enjoyed gardening, fishing, and especially traveling. She was an avid reader of American history., She is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Dexter Stearns Haven; her daughter, Penny Haven Harris and her husband, Shawn Curtis Harris; a niece, Susan Antoniewicz; a brother-in-law, Ted Antoniewicz; and two devoted cousins, Bob Crockett, Ann Sulzberger and her husband, Bill., A funeral service will be held at noon Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at Grafton Christian Church. Fannie Irene Holland Higgins CEDAR BLUFF, Va. Fannie Irene Holland Higgins Mumpower, age 97, of Middle Creek, went to heaven to be with her Savior. She passed away serenely and quietly in her sleep on Sunday morning, Nov. 22, 2009, at her home, following a brief illness. Born May 17, 1912, in Coalwood, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James W. and Mary Ellen Rose Holland. She had made her home in Cedar Bluff for over 30 years and was a retired cook having worked at Wimpy Jones, Hill Top Restaurant and also the Casino Grill. She worked for a time at the bus station in Richlands. She attended Layman's Chapel Church for over 30 years and later attended New Beginnings Church. All her life she enjoyed crocheting and making quilts and her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James P. Higgins; her second husband, Louis R. Mumpower; one son at birth in 1928; one daughter, Cleta June White; three grandsons, Ricky Houchins, Willard White Jr. and Daniel Houchins Jr.; three granddaughters, Katherine, Alisha White and Kay Harold; one great-granddaughter, Becky Hampton; five brothers, Charlie, Henry Clay, James Alfred, Ned and Jarvis; three sisters, Dosha, Emmie "Emma" and Gaynell. Norford Sr., 82, of Lower Allen Township, Camp Hill passed quietly at home into the Lord's hands Sunday, November 22, 2009., He was a retired carpenter for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Steelton; an Army veteran of World War II; a member of the Community United Methodist Church in New Cumberland for 70 years and a volunteer with the American Chestnut Tree Foundation. For 63 years, he was a member of the American Legion Post 143 in New Cumberland and for 20 years served as a coach, manager and past president of the Lower Allen Little League Baseball Association. Before returning to Pennsylvania, Harry and his wife served the Lord in Preddys Creek Baptist Church in Barboursville, Virginia, for the last 15 years., Harry was a sports enthusiast who loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and auto racing., He was born in Lemoyne on March 15, 1927, the son of the late Charles B. and Romaine E. Henry M. Barton VANSANT, Va. Henry M. Barton, age 80, passed away Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Henrietta and Harold Hale, following an extended illness. Born July 23, 1929, in Buchanan County, Va., he was a son of the late F.M. and Hazel Jackson Barton. A 1947 graduate of Garden High School, he was a multi-talented man, a published author, a licensed taxidermist, and a gifted artist, who was proud of his depiction of life through his oil paintings. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and until his health failed, he was an avid gardener. He had served as a postmaster for the U.S. Postal Service for several years and was a building contractor. Before his retirement, he was employed as a quality control building inspector, having overseen various renovations and new constructions, including Buchanan General Hospital, Miners and Merchants Bank at Tookland, and several schools in Buchanan County. He attended Liberty Church of Christ faithfully, until illness confined him to bed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Loretta McGlothlin and Mary Catherine Inman; and two brothers, Francis Barton Jr. and Freeman Barton. RYAN, John Anthony Jr., of Richmond, passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2009 surrounded by his wife and four children. A graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, Mr. Ryan served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and participated in four island invasions including Saipan and Iwo Jima. He attended the University of Richmond and graduated from Pennsylvania Military College (Widener University). He retired as a Vice President with J.B. Eurell Co. in 1986. Mr. Ryan was predeceased by his parents, Winifred and John A. Ryan Sr.; and a sister, Kathleen L. Ryan. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elaine Caravati Ryan; two sons, Terry Ryan (Lisa), and Tim Ryan; and two daughters, Maureen Ryan Williams (Steve), and Bridget Ryan Berman (Roger). Mr. Ryan is also survived by ten grandchildren. BOYD, Jack Ireland, PhD, died Monday, November 23, 2009 after several years of declining health. He was born on November 12, 1923 in Columbia, Missouri to the late Alaga Harrison and Myrtle (Patsy) Howard Ireland Boyd. After receiving his BA in Social Sciences at Monticello A&M, now University of Arkansas at Monticello, he served as a meteorologist with the U.S. Army Air Corps in Greenland. He then furthered his education by receiving an MA in International Relations at the University of Chicago. This was followed as a Rotary International Scholar at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. He then began a career as an international trade and development economist with the International Cooperative Administrations (ICA), now known as AID, in Washington, Jordan, Vietnam and Pakistan. In this capacity, he was responsible for developing and recommending plans for the use of foreign aid funds as well as following up on the progress of the programs. Retiring from the agency after 25 years gave him the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in education. He was accepted by the University of Alabama as a doctoral candidate and was awarded a PhD in Education Administration in 1973. He accepted a position with the Chesterfield County School System as a Teacher and Student Work Coordinator in 1974. This fulfilled a longtime goal of his to help young people in achieving their ambitions. After his retirement he often commented on what a rewarding experience this had been for him. Jack was a recipient of numerous awards and honors, one being inclusion in the 34th edition of Marquis Who's Who in America. Mr. Boyd is survived by his wife of 58 years, Annelle Marie Butler; son, Harrison Andrew Boyd and his wife, Jackye Lester of Chester; daughter, Harriet Annelle and her husband, John Patrick Harty of Lorton, Virginia; grandsons, Matthew Ireland and Joseph Andrew Harty of Lorton; brother, Robert Moore Boyd and his wife, Faye Milne, of Avondale Estates, Georgia; sister, Elizabeth (Betty) A. Conatser and her husband, Robert, of Oakwood, Georgia; nieces, Lynn Boyd Vann and her husband, Harry, and Yvonne Conatser Thomas and her husband, Tony; nephews, Alan Boyd and his wife, Andrea, and Grayden and Robert Conatser, Johnnie E. Butler and his wife, Johnnie L. Crowe, of Port Orange, Florida; and sisters, Clarice B. Schmidt of San Diego, California and Reba Butler Comer Ward of Foley, Alabama, along with their children. SAUM, James Baines, Lt. Col. USA (Ret.), 88, of Hingham, Mass., formerly of Rich-mond, died Sept-ember 28, 2009. "Jay" grew up in the Washington, D.C. area and graduated from the University of Maryland. During World War II he was an infantry officer in combat in France and Germany. After the war, he left the Army briefly, married, then rejoined the military to become a career Army officer. He served in many places in the U.S. and overseas, including Panama, Korea, West Virginia, Kansas, Hawaii, Vietnam, and Belgium. His career included a number of years stationed in Virginia, at Fort Belvoir and Fort Lee. After retiring, he lived in Windsor Farms for over 25 years, during which he enjoyed travel, antiques, cultivating roses, visiting relatives, and keeping in touch with many friends from his career in the Army. His wife of 62 years, Helen G. Saum, died in March, 2009. He was the father of James B. Saum, Jr. and of the late Timothy B. Saum, and the brother of Robert W. Saum and the late Hugh H. Saum, Jr. He is also survived by daughters-in-law Jean Byassee and Nancy Sodano; granddaughter Elizabeth Byassee Saum, and a number of nieces and nephews. John Winred Chambers Grundy, Va. John Winred Chambers, 89 years of age, of the Home Creek Section, passed away Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at his home following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late John and Gusta Chambers Chambers. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a graduate of Grundy High School Class of 1938. He served in the United States Eighth Army during World War II receiving the European-African -Middle-Eastern Service Medal with one Bronze Battle Star and was an expert carbine marksman pistol sharp-shooter Ml attaining the rank of mess sergeant. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Chambers was a member of the Buchanan First Presbyterian Church for 59 years where he served as an elder being ordained Dec. 31, 1978. He was a former employee of Grundy Piggly Wiggly where he served as manager of the produce and frozen food department and enjoyed gardening. Mr. Chambers was preceded in death by his wife, Mollie June Owens Chambers, July 3, 1997. Survived by one daughter, Becky and husband Tony Farmer, Route 1, Grundy; one son, Tom and wife Ellen Chambers, Bristol Virginia; one daughter-in-law, Carol Chambers, Grundy; four grandchildren, Aloysius Farmer, Bart Chambers, Boni Deel, Jeremy Hurley; six great-grandchildren, Brandon Deel, Tate Chambers, Alec Chambers, Reed Chambers, Jenna Hurley, Jaren Hurley. Mildred Taylor, beloved wife of Irving Taylor for 69 years, and devoted and loving mother of Harvey Taylor and his wife, Gerri, and of Ronald Taylor and his wife, Peg Lindorfer, died peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Friday, November 20, 2009, six weeks after celebrating her 90th birthday., She was blessed with five grandchildren, Stacy, and her husband, Robert Waugh, and Steven, Matthew, Peter and Allison Taylor, and was able to hold and love her first great-grandchild, Isabelle. She also leaves her brother-in- law, Alvin Taylor and his wife, Judit; Claudia and David Cohen and their daughters, Alyssa and Lindsay; Richard and Susan Allen and their sons, Josh and Seth; Marcia Taylor and her husband, Jeremy Rosenblum, and their daughters, Alison, Lauren and Amy; Michael Taylor and his wife, Andrea and their children, Dana, Heather and Aaron; Naomi Taylor and her husband, Marc Sitbon, and their children, Raphael, Daniel, and Noe; Sally Taylor; Suzanne Taylor and her son, Kyle; Dina Brewer and her husband, Paul, and their daughters Jesse, Eve and Sarah; Jonathan Taylor and his wife, Mary Mazzanti, and their newborn daughter, Lea Mildred Taylor., Mildred Taylor was born in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Julius and Lena Afsanic. She worked as a college financial administrator in Bayside New York, until she and her husband Irving retired in 1983. When they were not working they were fortunate to have the opportunity to travel, watching the Olympics in Mexico City and Montreal, as well as making trips to Europe, Peru, China, and India. They retired a second time to Charlottesville in 1996, and joined the Atlantic Coast Athletic Club soon afterwards, where they had the opportunity to make numerous new and dear friendships and to demonstrate, often six days a week, that exercise does indeed allow one to stay young in mind and body, regardless of age. Mildred Taylor was an outstanding cook and baker, a serious and dedicated fisherman, tennis player and scrabble fanatic, and most of all, loved by everyone who knew her. She will be sorely missed., The Taylor family wishes to thank Dr. Ajeet Vinayak, Dr. Christopher Rembold, and especially Dr. August Sanusi for the outstanding medical care they provided to Mildred Taylor. MARTIN, Paul Daniel, 44, of Thurmont, Md., passed away on November 21, 2009 at Frederick Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born December 17, 1964 in Richmond, Va., he was the son of Jack and Sharon Martin of Richmond. He is also survived by two sons, Gerald Joseph Martin and James Anthony Martin, and their mother, Christine Martin, all of Howard County, Md.; two brothers, A. Lee Martin and wife, June A. Dawson, of Huntingtown, Md., and John Edward Martin of Indiana; a sister, Christine Martin Pitts and husband, Andrew, of Glen Allen, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will also be dearly missed by Christie Wilhide of Thurmont, Md. Growing up in Tappahannock, Va., Paul graduated from Essex High School, Class of 1983, and worked for his father as he learned the power utility construction trade. He worked as a high-voltage lineman for his entire career, most recently with Rockingham Construction Co. An avid outdoorsman, Paul loved hunting and fishing, and hiking and camping on the beaches and in the mountains. He also enjoyed hot air ballooning. Martha Sink Price, 73, of Roanoke, Va., passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 22, 2009, with her family at her side after facing the challenges of ovarian cancer for the past five years. Born on October 12, 1936, in Roanoke, Va., Martha spent her life in Roanoke and most recently in Botetourt County. Martha was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, cousin, and friend. Her family and friends celebrate her life. Martha graduated from William Fleming High School in 1955 and was a 1958 graduate of Roanoke Memorial Hospital School of Professional Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at RMH for a number of years and taught in the hospital LPN program. When her children were young, she worked for Dr. A. Lynn Beavers and later taught the Health Occupations course for Roanoke County Schools. She retired from Roanoke City Schools where she had taught in the LPN program until it closed and was State Health Occupations Teacher of the Year in 1991. Martha was very proud to teach nurses and cherished the relationships she had with her nursing students., Martha loved reading, traveling with her husband and friends, and spending time with her family; especially her grandchildren. She cherished her wild cat "Target," who provided her love and comfort throughout her illness., Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Howard C. and Stella Hodges Sink., Loved ones left to cherish her memory include her high school sweetheart and loving, devoted husband of 52 years, Lewis Dean Price, of the home; her son, Michael D. Price and his wife, Janet, of Roanoke; her daughter, Dr. Michele P. Holskey and her husband, Mark, of Botetourt; brother, Donald G. Sink and his wife, Sylvia, of Roanoke; sister, Judy C. Bova and her husband, Billy, of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and sister-in-law, Joan P. White, of Roanoke. Also surviving are grandchildren, Erica B. Price, Siera D. Price, Joshua H. James Earl (Butch) Thompson James Earl (Butch) Thompson, 51, of Lovingston, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville. Butch was born April 8, 1958, in Charlottesville, a son of the late James William Thompson and Mildred Hamilton Thompson. He was a graduate of Nelson County High School, a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, a former technician at the University of Virginia Medical Center and was presently employed as a technician with Region 10 of Nelson County. He is survived by his wife, Raylene Forman Thompson; a daughter, Gloria Carin Bocher of Howardsville; two step-children, Walter R. Pelt of Biloxi, Miss., and Andrea R. Pelt of Vera Beach, Fla.; his aunts, Gloria Earleen Harris (Bill) and Shirley T. Spotswood (Harold), all of Lovingston; five grandchildren; along with several other aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. A service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2009, at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Lilly officiating, and the family will receive friends following the service. JOHNSON, Wesley F., 74, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 23, 2009. He was preceded in death by his beloved father and mother, Frank and Elizabeth Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Ethel C.; brothers, Tommy and Garland (Joy); two nieces, Paulette Davidson (Shannon) and Regina Potis (Josh); a dedicated sister-in-law, Bertha Clary. He was blessed with many friends and two devoted friends, Charles and Dean Blackwell. He was a devoted member of Fairmount Memorial Baptist Church all of his life. MILLER, William Weaver M.D., 76, passed away November 20 in Oberlin, Ohio. Dr. Miller was born September 1, 1933 in Winchester, Va., and lived in Philadelphia, Boston, Germany, Dallas, and Richmond. A graduate of both the Virginia Military Institute and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, Dr. Miller received further training in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology at the Children's Hospitals of Philadelphia and Boston. As a pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Miller was a faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University and later went on to private practice in Richmond, Va. In 1987 he established the journal Progress in Pediatric Cardiology. His life was centered around his family and friends, his practice, and the great outdoors. Dr. Miller is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth Niemann Miller; son, Walter; daughter, Rachel; three grandchildren, Gehring, Ilse, and Mahala; brother, George Tyler Miller; and sister, Elise Browning Miller. A celebration of his life will be 2 p.m. January 3, 2010 at Kendal at Oberlin, in Oberlin, Ohio. |
