Drewry, Patty Moncure

DREWRY, Patty Moncure, widow of Thomas Watkins Drewry, died peacefully at home on January 18, 2009. The younger daughter of the late William Augustus Moncure and Margaret Tinsley Moncure, Mrs. Drewry was born in Richmond in 1917. She grew up at the family home "Picquenocque" in Henrico County, as part of an exceptionally close-knit extended family, to which she was devoted. She was graduated from Collegiate School and attended Sweetbriar College. Mrs. Drewry worked at the Richmond News Leader for several years and served as a volunteer nurse's aid at the Medical College of Virginia during World War II. After their marriage in 1949, she and her husband lived briefly in Martinsville before moving to Williamsburg, where they raised their children at "Charlton House" in the Historic Area until his death in 1969, after which she made her home in Richmond. A member of Richmond's Second Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Drewry lived out the spirit of her faith and supported the Church's missions in a myriad of ways each day. Like her mother and her husband, she always quietly found ways to help others, both through organizations such as Meals on Wheels (for which she served as a longtime driver) and through generous individual acts of thoughtful kindness. Mrs. Drewry pursued her interests in historic preservation through active membership in the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities and several Virginia county historical societies. She loved to garden, was a prize-winning flower arranger and was long involved in the Garden Club of Virginia. She was also a member of The Woman's Club, the Colonial Dames, the Country Club of Virginia and a former member of the Quarry Club and the Tuckahoe Woman's Club. The last, and longest, surviving of the seven Moncure children, Mrs. Drewry was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Moncure Johnson; and their brothers, William Augustus Moncure Jr., Thomas Rutherfoord Moncure, James Garland Tinsley Moncure, Eustace Conway Moncure and John Moncure. She is survived by her son, William Sidney Drewry II of Williamsburg; her daughter and son-in-law, Virginia Watkins Drewry and Howard Curtiss Martin, of Alexandria; her granddaughter, Abigail Tinsley Moncure Martin of Alexandria and Williamstown, Massachusetts; two sisters-in-law, Julia Jones Moncure and Mary Cox Moncure, both of Richmond; the rest of the extended Moncure and Tinsley connection, including a host of nieces and nephews and their families and many friends. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, at Westminster Canterbury, 1600 Westbrook Avenue, Richmond. The interment will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 23, at Hollywood Cemetery, 412 South Cherry Street, Richmond. After the interment, Mrs. Drewry's life will be celebrated at an 11 a.m. memorial service at Second Presbyterian Church, 5 North Fifth Street (between Franklin and Main Streets), Richmond. A reception will follow the church service. Mrs. Drewry's family asks that those who loved her honor her memory by continuing to give of themselves to others. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in lieu of flowers, might contribute to the Thomas Watkins Drewry and Patty Moncure Drewry Scholarship Fund at the Virginia Tech Mechanical Engineering Department, 100 Randolph Hall, Blacksburg, Va. 24061, or a charity of their choice.

He will be greatly missed by his children, Charles W. Gunn III and his wife, Beverly, of Hopewell, and Annhorner Truitt and her husband, Craig, of Richmond. He is also survived by his sister, Lois Cotten and her family of Tallahassee, Florida. He was born July 31, 1922 in Tallahassee, Florida. At an early age, his sister called him "Bunny". He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII where he fought in the North Atlantic, Caribbean and South Pacific. He attended John B. Stetson University and Florida State University. He began working for "the telephone company" in Florida, then was transferred to South Boston, Va. and ultimately to Lexington. He worked there until he earned his law degree from Washington and Lee University in 1958. He settled with his family in Lexington where he established a law practice. From 1962-63, he was a judge in Buena Vista Municipal Court. "Bunny" Gunn was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, representing Lexington, Buena Vista, Bedford and Rocky Mount, and the counties of Rockbridge, Bedford and Franklin from 1963 to 1978. After his retirement, he was appointed member of the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services Board. He was a faithful champion of the physically and mentally disabled, devoting his life to "walking his talk" both publically and privately. He was humbled to be recognized by the Virginia Association for Retarded Children for "outstanding efforts to guarantee basic human rights for all" and the Virginia Association for Mental Health for "courageous service to the mentally ill". He served in numerous church and civic leadership positions including being president of the Lexington-Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce, the Lexington Lifesaving and First Aid Crew, Jaycees, and the Rockbridge County-Buena Vista Bar Association. He was a Member of Council of Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Bar Association, the American Legion, and the Hickory Hill Gun Club. For over a decade, he was an enthusiastic member of a small group through Needle's Eye Ministries, and, more recently, a joyful member of Third Presbyterian Church in Richmond. He was a proud member of the Richmond Chapter/ U.S. Navy, Armed Guard and U.S. Merchant Marine. Throughout life, he worked to demonstrate his love for the Lord, for his family, neighbors and others. He had a kind heart for the hurting, a courageous voice for those who could not be heard, a determination to always do the right thing, and a gracious smile for all. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, at Third Presbyterian Church, 600 Forest Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23226. Hubbard, Elbert G.

to the company. Mr. Hubbard was a proud member of the Tidewater Virginia ASA Hall of Fame as a dedicated sponsor and a member of the American Legion for many years. To try and capture a man's lifetime in a few short words does not, nor cannot, do justice. To know Elbert Hubbard, affectionately known as "Big E" to those lucky ones, is to know a person that had the most giving and caring heart of but a few people in this world. His giving was not just to his family, but because of his position in the business community - his giving reached far beyond those that saw him everyday. The countless people that worked for him, with him or knew him were better people - and so his goodness passed on. His giving, caring and honest approach to life were valuable lessons to all that met him or bettered themselves because of him. If Elbert Hubbard did not help you with gifts or words of advice, he sure would tell you that you were doing it wrong and you better try it another way, most likely his way. Don't let the physical passing of "Big E" diminish the good he brought to this world. Let it be the beginning of keeping him in your thoughts and remember how you were blessed by knowing him and the lessons he taught you. The station a man achieves in life should never be measured by the things he has, but instead by the friends he keeps. The love and support that has been coming forth over the last few days truly indicates what a rich man, in life, "Big E" was. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Madeline Ciola Hubbard; his daughter, Denise Hubbard Matchen and her husband James of Norfolk; his son, Charles B. Hubbard of Chesapeake; his son, Arthur G. Hubbard and his wife Vanessa of Virginia Beach; his daughter, Maryjo Hubbard Shockley and her husband Rick of West Palm Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Glenn and Kara Matchen, Aubrey, Lexie and Carter Hubbard, Ricky, Chris and Alex Shockley. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Benjamin Arthur Hubbard and his wife Mary Elizabeth Hubbard and several nieces and nephews. He was a kind and generous husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all. A funeral will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Richard Goodman from Thalia Trinity Presbyterian. Burial will follow in Saint Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home. McCann, Katharine Ann

On Thursday, January 15, 2009, at Carilion Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va., surrounded by family, the Lord took my Katie home to Heaven. Katie was born on March 18, 1938, in Hamilton, N.Y., the first of six children of Harold Hunt Evans (deceased) and Doris Church Evans. Following graduation from Hamilton High School in 1956 she married Robert M. "Bob" Waldbillig of Peekskill, N.Y., and began her new life as the wife of an Air Force pilot and a mother. They had a wonderful marriage and three children: Linda M. Stewart (Henry) and their four children of Atascadero, Calif., Robert S. Waldbillig of Linden, N.C., and Michael W. Waldbillig (Michelle) and their four children of Tucson, Aria. Air Force assignments took the family to several locations in the United States as well as England and Germany and Katie made sure there was a loving family home regardless of the location., Lt. Col. Bob Waldbillig died in an aircraft accident in Germany in September, 1975. In 1976 Katie and her children returned to Clovis, N.M., near Cannon Air Force Base, the location of an earlier assignment., On August 18, 1979, Katie and Col. Robert I. "Bob" McCann, of Dedham, Mass., were married in the chapel at Cannon AFB. As a result of their marriage Katie gained four stepdaughters: Kelly M. Maffeo (Robert) and their three children, of Foxborough, Mass., Penny E. Pennington (John) and her two children, of Warrenton, Va., Maureen McCann and her two children, of Walpole, Mass., and Stephanie Elia (Dennis), of Quincy, Mass. Katie loved them all as her own and that love was reciprocated., For the next almost 30 years Bob and Katie lived and enjoyed life to its fullest. Katie knew all too well the hardships and demands of military life and worked hard to help other military families particularly those who lost a spouse on active duty. After retirement from the Air Force they traveled extensively and built their own aircraft which they flew all over the United States. She recalled prior to her death, "I have really lived life.", In addition to her mother, husband, children, and stepchildren Katie is survived by her sisters, Jacqueline Jones, of Hamilton, N.Y., Susan Benedict, of Erieville, N.Y., Judy Moody (Maurice), of Harpswell, Maine, Patricia Williams, of Albuquerque, N.M.; brother, L. Vincent Evans (Lynn) of Syracuse, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and 16 nieces and nephews., "Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future. She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and bless her; her husband also, and he praises her, saying: "Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all." Proverbs 31: 25-29, will be at the Fort Myer Post Chapel with internment to follow in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., Charities
