Jan 26, 2009 The funeral for Annie Louise Martin, 88, of Fieldale, who died Jan. 22, 2009, was held Sunday at Bassett Funeral Service South Chapel. The Revs. Clyde Earles and Eldon Morgan officiated. Burial was in Horsepasture Christian Church cemetery. ANTHONY, Richard Bryant Sr., 79, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 24, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jane Edwards Anthony; three sons and their wives, Dick and Pam Anthony of Richmond, Fred and Beverly Anthony of Roanoke and David and Becky Anthony of Richmond; grandchildren, Sara and her husband, Jon Lowery, Heather and her husband, John Larsen, all of Richmond, Matthew and his fianc‚e, Katie Jansma, of Baxter, Minn., Erin, Kristin, Adam, Alyssa, Tyler and Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Ellie; sister, Estelle Grant of Greensboro, N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Anthony Sr.; brothers, J.O. Anthony Jr. and J. Charles Anthony; sisters, Helen Schultz and Hurley Brooks. Mr. Anthony served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a lifelong educator retiring in 1988 from Henrico County Schools, having served for 28 years at Douglas S. Freeman High School, where he was principal from 1973 to 1986. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd. She was a member of Open Door Baptist Church in Rural Retreat. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Sue Stowers; and a sister, Inez King. Survivors include her husband of 23 years, Emory Leon Brewster of Rural Retreat; a daughter, Tammy Lynn Shuler of Rural Retreat; a son, Manuel Worley "Bud" Stowers Jr. of Rural Retreat; three grandchildren, Crystal Gertz, Megan Stowers and Amanda Wheeler; two great-grandchildren, Kierra Gertz and Dakota Wheeler; three sisters, Phyllis Woods of Orgas, W.Va., Betty Cooley of Elyria, Ohio, and Violet King of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Eugene Hunter of Gordon, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Burke, Esther Magnolia

BURKE, Esther Magnolia, 84, born May 20, 1924, of Love Isaiah and Mary Elizabeth Hurt, entered into eternal life on January 22, 2009. She was preceded in death by her brothers, James "Sonny" Hurt and Clarence "KooGee" Hurt, and her sister, Hattie Ruth Harding. She leaves to mourn with great memories her brother, Robert Leon Hurt, and his wife, Phyllis; her only child, Lawrence Burke Sr. and his wife, Jacqueline; grandchildren, Dane and his wife, Leslie, Lawrence Jr. and his wife, Tanya, Howard, and Erika; great-grandchildren, Daron, Rudy IV, Quiana, Neisha, Siliah, and Deveny; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors. Esther graduated from Lunenburg High School, then moved to New York City to live with her aunt. She remained in New York for most of her life. During her lifetime she attended many different churches while always faithfully remaining a member of Springfield Baptist, Meherrin, Va. During her life she had many experiences and careers ranging from the hand painting and design shops in New York City to modeling. She was also employed by the N.Y. Social Services Department, The Board of Education, and the Department of Hospital Services from which she retired as a supervisor while at Queens General in Jamaica, N.Y. She remained in New York until May 2007 when she moved to Richmond, Va., enabling her to be closer to her immediate family. She loved to be the "Social Butterfly" reaching out and caring for all those she came in contact with. She was strong in her faith with God and doing His will. She'll be "oh so" missed by all who knew her and her infectious smile that could easily brighten your day. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. Services will be held at Springfield Baptist Church, 1784 Springfield Rd., Meherrin, Va., at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, with a visitation to be held one hour prior to service. She volunteered as well as worked for many years for Beth Sholom Convalescent Community. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Charles "Linnie" Collins; sons, Shawn Collins and wife, Colleen, P. Kevin Collins and Brian Collins; daughter, Shannon Collins Lawson and husband, Jerry; grandchildren Nicole, Flannery, Kaitlyn, Aaron, Eamonn, Konner, Maeve, Maggie, Adam, and Emma; as well as her four-legged friends, Lucy, Peggy Sue, and Fred; along with many other loving family and friends. Judge Hollie Conley of Garrett, Ky., died Sun., Jan. 11, 2009 in Illinois. He was born to Willis and Mimia Conley Jan. 14, 1921. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Martin Conley, his parents, his brothers Haden and Clyde Conley, sisters Inez Cox and Edna Everidge. Surviving are sisters Sallie (Victor) Scherrer of Alexandria, Va., and Bessie (Homer) Draughn of Lexington, Ky. In addition, he is survived by son Hollie Martin Conley of New York; daughters Judelle Conley of Lexington, Danise (Mark) White of Virginia and Melanie (Ron) Warfield of Illinois. He was a fun loving grandfather to Scott, Robb and Leah Warfield, Holly (Bo) Renes, Chad (Alyssa) White and Rebecca White. Also surviving are 7 great grandchildren. Judge Conley was a graduate of Alice Lloyd College, University of Kentucky and Duke University Law School. He served in the US Navy during World War II, was Floyd County Attorney and Commonwealth's Attorney before serving for 28 years as Judge of the Circuit Court. Judge Conley and his wife Minnie owned and operated Conley's Ky Food Store in Garrett for more than 40 years. Judge Conley lived with a passion for life: a passion for hunting, a passion for Ky. sports, a passion for serving the customers at Conley's Ky Food Store, a passion for being fair and equal as a judge and a passion for his family. Visitation was held after 1 p.m. Fri., Jan. 16, and services were Sat., Jan. 17, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home in Martin, Ky. Burial followed at the Mimia Conley Cemetery at Hueysville. Through God's grace, he asked the Lord for his Salvation and gave his heart to the Lord just six weeks ago. HARRISON, Bessie Payne, 96, widow of Joseph Albert Harrison Jr., her husband of 55 years, died surrounded by her family on the morning of January 25, 2009. Mrs. Harrison was the daughter of the late John and Martha Payne of Fluvanna County. She and her husband were the proprietors of Harrison's Texaco on East Belt Boulevard from 1960 to 1974. They were also longtime members of Friendship Baptist Church. Mrs. Harrison is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jo and Tommy Woodcock; her two granddaughters, Christy and Tammy; her great-granddaughter, Karli, all of Chesterfield. The family will receive friends at Bliley's - Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., where services will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at the chapel, with interment to follow at Washington Memorial Park, Sandston. HARRISON, Dr. Jaquelin M., retired Richmond surgeon, died on January 22, 2009. He was 86 years of age. While in the Army Specialized Training program he graduated from the University of Viriginia, Medical School in 1946, interned at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and served in the U.S. Army medical corp from 1947 to 1949. He completed his residency in surgery at the Medical College of Virginia in 1954. Subsequently until 1970 he served as a full time faculty member in the department of surgery at MCV. From 1970 until his retirement in 1990, he was a member of surgical associates of Richmond. He is survived by his wife, Marybelle O. Harrison; three children, Mrs. Judith Pace of Richmond, Va., Alice Ridgely Harrison of Shipman, Va., and Randolph F. Harrison of Fort Myers, Fla. He is predeceased by another son, Jaquelin M. Harrison Jr.; and a brother Frederick N. Harrison Jr. Also surviving him are three stepchildren, Harold Scott Bazemore, Christopher Norwood Bazemore, and Mrs. Jantz Bazemore Rollison, all of Mechanicsville, Va.; four grandchildren, eight stepgrandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Robert Spratley of Richmond, Va. She spent most of her career as a physical therapist in Northern Virginia before moving with her husband to Mechanicsville, Virginia. Prior to the illness that took her from her family and friends she served as a Senior Physical Therapist specializing in integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) at CJW Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. The memorial and inurnment will be limited to her immediate family. She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Chip Lichvar; a daughter, Rebecca Anne Lichvar; and son, Jonathan Robert Lichvar. Ronnie was an active member of Staples Mill Baptist Church in Glen Allen, where she worked as administrative assistant in the child development center. Her eyes were donated to the Virginia Eye Bank by her husband, who himself received a heart transplant 11 years ago. The hospice unit nurses and staff at Retreat Hospital, who showed much compassion as they looked after her and the family during this time. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Denny William Norris; five brothers, Robert Angles, Sam Angles, Melvin Angles, George Angles, and Roy Lee Angles; one sister, Myrtle Godsey; daughter-in-law, Teresa Penland Norris and special friend, Peggy Price. Her days were made easier and she was comforted during this long illness by the exceptional care of the staff of Grace Health Care. Jack R. Patrick, age 83, of Paintlick, Va., passed away Wed., Jan. 14, 2009 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Mohegan, W.Va., and was the son of the late Samuel Riley and Juliett Blanchett Patrick. Jack was a U.S. Navy World War II Veteran and had proudly served his country. Jack was a retired coal miner from VP# 1 for Island Creek Coal Corporation and was a member of the UMWA. He had served in the American Honor Guard, and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Peery Sr., Joseph Emory

Joseph Emory Peery, Sr., age 91, of Tazewell County, formerly of Wytheville, died Sun., Jan. 4, 2009. Born April 29, 1917 in Tazewell County, Va., he was the son of the late Joe Howard and Annie Sluss Peery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Odom Peery and a sister, Danese Peery. Mr. Peery was a descendant of John Peery, who settled near the forks of Clinch River in 1772. Mr. Peery was educated in Tazewell's schools and later worked for Pocahontas Fuel Company. In 1944 he started Peery Meat Packing Plant in North Tazewell and later one in West Virginia. He was President of Peery Trucking Company from 1959 to 1979 and established Tam Lee Farms Country Hams, Stuarts Draft, Va. Throughout his life Mr. Peery developed and sold real estate in and around Tazewell County. Mr. Peery was a man who was devoted to his friends and his family, who in turn reciprocated his affection. Mr. Peery is survived by three children and spouses, Joseph E. Jr. and Margaret Anne McBurney Peery of Tazewell, Va., Sharon Lynn Peery Hymes of Wytheville, Va., Ronald Wayne and Reina Peery of Tazewell, Va.; 11 grandchildren, Joseph E. Peery, III, Anne Hart Savvopoulos, Jennifer Margaret Buchanan, Elizabeth Hymes Fletcher, Amy Hymes Howell, Edward Hymes, Rebekah Peery, John Preston Peery, Ronald W. Peery, Jr., Susan Dawson and Rachel Peery. Twenty-eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild also survive. Mr. Peery will be cremated and interred beside his wife at Tazewell's Maplewood Cemetery. Stanley Robert Pliska NORFOLK - Stanley Robert Pliska, professor emeritus of Old Dominion University, passed away peacefully Jan. 24, 2009, at age 91, in Mansfield, Conn. Dr. Pliska was born in Franklin, Pa., and was a native of Oil City, Pa. He was married to his beloved Winifred (Medygro) Pliska who preceded him in death Oct. 11, 1992. He attended and received degrees from Penn State University, Oberlin College and a Doctor of Education degree from Columbia University. During World War II he served with the Air Corps in the Southwest Pacific and after the war with the USAFR, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel. From 1946 to 1987 he was on the faculty of Old Dominion University, serving in turn as professor of history, chairman of the Social Studies department, and for 20 years, as Dean of the School of General Studies. For 30 years he was also a guest lecturer at the Arms Forces Staff College. During his active years, he was a member of several professional societies related to his profession. In Norfolk, he was also past president of the Northside Norfolk Rotary Club, Honorary Member of the ODU Alumni Association, Faculty Emeriti Association, American Association of University Professors, Polish American Society of Tidewater, and Town and Gown. When he moved to Connecticut, he was active with the Willimantic Rotary Club recording Club History and lecturing. Stanley is survived by his sisters, Ann Pudelkiewicz of Willington, Conn., and Mildred Parks of Vernon, Conn.; a niece, Ann Phillips and her husband Roger and daughters, Kelly and Kasey of Ashford, Conn.; a nephew, John Pudelkiewicz and his wife Irene "Rini" and their son Tommy of Tolland, Conn.; a niece, Judy (Zimoski) Kozek and her husband Robert of Grove City, Ohio; a nephew, Edward Zimoski and his wife Kathy of Virginia; a cousin, Irene Meyers of Oil City, Pa.; and relatives. Stanley graced us all with his Southern charm, quick wit, endless jokes and anecdotes. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of having him in their lives. Dr. Pliska was a parishioner at Saint Jude's in Willington. There will be no calling hours. Uzel, Evelyn Martin

UZEL, Evelyn Martin, 83, of Richmond, died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 22, 2009. She was the daughter of the late Clifford and Virginia Martin of Leicester, N.C., and former wife of Tony Uzel. She is survived by three loving daughters, Linda Maclin (John), Martha Uzel (Neal) and Patricia Lundquist; six grandchildren, Candace Gresham, Tyler Maclin, Shelly Dietrich (John), Alex Maclin, Ginnie Maclin and Carrie Lundquist; one brother, Carlyle Martin (Kathy) of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; two sisters-in-law, Mary (Uzel) Throckmorton and Agnes (Uzel) Bailey (Jimmy); and brother-in-law, Benjamin Uzel Sr. (Rose). Evelyn never knew a stranger and was always willing to lend a kind word and helping hand. She was generous to a fault and always optimistic. She was especially proud that she was still working for the Richmond Public Schools after 43 years of service. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 25, at the Laburnum Chapel of the Nelsen Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, January 26, at Laurel Hill United Methodist Church, 1919 New Market Rd., Richmond, Va. Refreshments will follow the service. Ashes to be scattered later on the mountaintop at Turkey Creek Baptist Church, Leicester, N.C. Mr. McKinley "Toots" Whited, age 82, of Raven, Va., passed away Thurs., Jan. 15, 2009 in a Richlands, Va., hospital following a brief illness. He was born at Jewell Ridge, Va., and was the son of the late Roby and Naomi Hess Whited. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a retired coal miner. He was a member of the UMWA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Whited. Bobby Ray Woody, 71, of Rocky Gap died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009. Funeral service was held Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Bluefield Church of God with the Revs. Danny Scott, Phil Akers and Paul Looney officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, W.Va., with the West Virginia Honor Guard and Bluefield VFW Post 9696 conducting graveside military rites. A Masonic memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 7:30 p.m. by the Elbert Munsey Lodge 298 AF & AM which also conducted Masonic graveside rites. He was a devoted Christian whose final wish was for deliverance home. He was a member of the Church of God on Cumberland Road in Bluefield, W.Va. He served his country as an MP in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He was a member of the Tazewell County VFW. He was a member of the Veterans Memorial Park Committee of Bland County. He was retired from JW&L Enterprises where he was a supervisor. He was a founding member of the Bland County Rescue Squad and served as captain for five years. He was president of the Local Union 1626 District 29 UMWA for 13 years. He was president of the Lions Club for 10 years and was a member of the Moose Lodge for 20 years. He owned his own construction company, East River Construction, where he operated as both a speculative and operative mason. His rock work was renowned for its quality and craftsmanship. He was a member of the Elbert Muncy Masonic Lodge 298 in Rocky Gap. He also assisted his wife with her many business ventures including Mary's Drive In atop East River Mountain in the 1970s and later Woody's convenience store in Rocky Gap. Together they worked side-by-side for 37 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Vinnie Dot Woody of Rocky Gap; and a brother, Olden Brown "O.B." Woody. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Mary E. Woody of Rocky Gap; daughter and son-in-law, Dreama and Kerry Gammon of Rocky Gap; the pride and joy of his world, his grandchildren, Eric Thompson and fiancée, Amanda Staples, and Shala Gammon; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond L. and Virginia Woody of Rocky Gap, Sherman Woody of Rich Creek, Watha F. and Brenda Woody of Rocky Gap; a sister, Phyllis Looney and Homer Mullins of Rocky Gap; a sister-in-law, Euva L.
