Parsons, of Richmond, Va., and Claudia Abbott Dunn and her husband, Steven Dunn, of Louisville, Ky.; her grandchildren, Susan Hood Franz of Williamsburg and George M. Hudgins III of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and her great-grandsons, Thomas Hudgins Hood and Ian Franz. Mary Jane Behnke VIRGINIA BEACH - Mary Jane Behnke went to the Lord Jan. 26, 2009. Mrs. Behnke was a native of New London, Wis., and was a longtime resident of Virginia Beach, most recently in the Marion Manor Assisted Living Facility. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clarence "Art" Behnke; two sons, U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Patrick James Behnke and Peter Arthur Behnke. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Patrice Behnke of Corpus Christi, Texas; a granddaughter, Amanda Behnke of Arlington, Va.; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Theresa Ballard and husband John Ballard of Chula Vista, Calif.; as well as numerous cousins across. She was a member of Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Mary Jane worked for several years as a registered nurse in the recovery room of Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, and is well remembered for her cheerful and helpful personality. She was also very active in the various social activities that were held in Marion Manor. She had a zest for life. BYRNE, Kenneth P., D.D.S., devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and oral surgeon, born on June 10, 1951, died January 28, 2009, after valiantly fighting bile duct cancer since 2005. Dr. Byrne is survived by his wife, Judy Jacobs Byrne of Atlanta, Ga.; his daughter, Shea Elizabeth Byrne from Kunming, China; as well as his adult daughters, Ashley Lauren Byrne-McAleese of Stafford, Va., Rachel Anne Byrne-Domina and Jennifer Lynn Byrne. He is further survived by his mother, Mildred Paul Byrne of Richmond, Va.; his sister, Cynthia Byrne Lilley of Richmond, Va.; and his brother, John Franklin Byrne of Midlothian, Va. Dr. Byrne is also survived by eight grandchildren, Alexis, Trentin, Haylee, Chloe, Amaya, Riley, Callie, and Cori. He received his Certificate of Residency: Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Naval Hospital in Oakland, Calif., in 1987. He achieved the 99th percentile ranking for both year group and overall, on the National Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Inservice Training Examination (OMSITE) for both the second and third years of residency training. Dr. Byrne, a native of Richmond, Va., had practiced dentistry for over 23 years, with 13 of those years in the United States Navy. Dr. Byrne had been in private practice in Woodbridge, Va. since 1991. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, February 20, 2009 at 11 a.m., at Pohick Church, 9301 Richmond Highway, Lorton, Va. 22079. In keeping with Dr. Byrne's wishes, he has been cremated. Immediately following the service, his ashes will be buried in the Pohick Church Cemetery. Beadles and Alpha Lee Rice Beadles on March 11, 1916, she was preceded in death by husband, William D. Hasty Sr. and her second husband, Robert Elam; sisters, Gertrude Clancy, Lynette Vick, Moselle Heath, Irene Cash, Agnes Hertless; and brothers, Clarence Elmo Beadles, James Lawrence Beadles and William Rylie Beadles Jr. She is survived by her son, William D. Anne A. Friedman NORFOLK - Anne Altenhaus Friedman, 79, passed away Jan. 30, after a short illness. Anne was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Thomas and her parents, Isaac and Pepi Altenhaus of Antwerp, Belgium. Anne is survived by her four sons, Barry and his wife Linda Peck, Brian and his wife Ingeresa, Bruce and Emily and Bobby; and her six grandchildren, Neal, Cole, Sarah, Rachel, Elli and Ethan. She also leaves behind her dear younger sister, Mina and her husband Norman; as well as many relatives and friends who will always miss her infectious humor, personality and smile. Anne retired after more than 20 years with Virginia Beach Social Services, but her favorite job was raising and treasuring her children and grandchildren. Anne was a survivor of the Holocaust who lost her parents at an early age. Despite this tragedy, she had a positive outlook on life and was always grateful for the gift of life and family. She gave freely of her time educating others about the tragedies she and her sister experienced by speaking to countless schoolchildren over the last 30 years. Anne recorded her story in her memoir, "My Name is Anne Too." Arriving with her sister in 1946 as an orphan, who spoke not a word of English, Anne quickly adapted to her new country and forged a remarkable life that speaks for itself. Anne may have given birth to four boys, but through her loving and kind spirit she was a mom to many. Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Ohef Sholom Temple, 530 Raleigh Ave., Norfolk. The burial will follow at Bnai Israel Cemetery on Cromwell Road. The family will sit Shiva at the home of Barry and Linda, 5612 Shenandoah Ave., Norfolk. LaMASKIN, Jerald Howard, 73, of Richmond, Va., passed away on January 29, 2009. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marcia LaMaskin; two sons, Mark LaMaskin and his wife, Wendy, and Todd LaMaskin and his wife, Laurie Janus; two grandchildren, Aaron and Noa LaMaskin; sister, Arleen Richman; and his brother-in-law, Barry Spero and his wife, Merle. Jerry grew up in Chicago and graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from Purdue University, where he was a member of Sammy Fraternity. After working for Clark Equipment Dealerships in Cleveland, New York, and Baltimore, he acquired his own dealerships in Richmond as well as Salisbury and Baltimore, Md. He was a well- respected business owner who cared deeply about his many employees. He was also very active in the national Clark owners association, and a past board member of Temple Beth Ahabah. After his retirement, Jerry spent his time acting as the accountant for his son, Mark's business, Performance Autosport, checking the stock market constantly, and corresponding with his beloved grandchildren. He loved to travel, especially going on cruises. His most recent trip was a laughter-filled week in Disney World with his entire family. Genevieve M. Leonard VIRGINIA BEACH - Genevieve M. Leonard, known as "Peggy," passed away Jan. 28, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was 83. Genevieve was a loving and caring mother who gave her life to raising her seven children while supporting her husband during his 30-year Naval career and beyond. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Virginia Beach for the past 48 years. She will always be remembered by her children for all of the years of selflessness and dedication to her family. Genevieve was an avid gardener and had a remarkable talent to make every holiday special with her beautiful holiday displays. LIGON, Emily Hodges, 99, of Richmond, passed away January 24, 2009 at Lakewood Manor in Richmond, Va. Born in Starr, S.C., May 8, 1909, she was the daughter of Roxanne Davis and Baxter Hardy Hodges. She was predeceased in 2002 by her husband of 67 years, Sebastian Cater Ligon. They lived most of their lives in Charlotte, N.C. She was a 1931 honor graduate of Winthrop College and a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, N.C., where she served as Sunday School teacher, committee chairman and president of the Women of the Church. Her chief interests were church, family, history and genealogy. She served as regent of the Liberty Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the James Lane Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and was a board member of the Hezekiah Alexander Museum Auxiliary. She is survived by a daughter, Katherine Ligon James and son-in-law, Charles M. James, of Manakin-Sabot, Va.; a sister, Caroline Clark of Augusta, Ga.; three grandsons, Charles Lee James and wife, Wendy, of Charlotte, N.C., Hardy Ligon James and wife, Courtney, of Richmond, Va., and Tayler Hodges James of Richmond, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Devon, Griffin and Katherine of Charlotte, N.C., Caroline Katherine and Margaret Emily of Richmond, Va. Robert Edward Morris, 68, of Roanoke, Va., passed away Thursday, January 29, 2009, after a long battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances Mroz and Edward Joseph Morris, of Fall River, Mass. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, Bob worked for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute for several years before becoming an Oceanographer for the United States Navy Department based in Washington, D.C. He operated Roy L. Webber Florist for the last 35 years. During that time, he served as Chairman and District Representative for the Virginia State FTD Unit, President of the Williamson Road Area Business Association, board member of the Better Business Bureau and was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Gladys Webber Morris; daughters, Wendy Morris Harless, of Kernersville, N.C., Michelle Kathryn Morris, of Weehawken, N.J., and Deborah Morris Jones, of Arlington, Va.; grandson, Spenser Harless; and sonsin-law, Steve Harless and Brian Jones. ROBINSON, Jeanne Ash, died peacefully on Thursday, January 29, 2009. She was predeceased by her husbands, J. William Ash, and E. F."Robbie" Robinson. She is survived by her three devoted children, William E. Ash and his wife, Debbie, Steven E. Ash and his wife, Renn, and Suzanne C. Ash; her brother, John B. Eurell Jr.; four grandchildren, Steven E. Ash Jr., Ryan H. Ash, William E. Ash Jr., and Megan B. Ash. She was born in Baltimore and raised in Philadelphia, graduated from Goucher College, and became a southerner in 1950 when she moved to Charlottesville and then to Richmond in 1952. She was a beloved mother, a true example of strength and devotion, who raised her three children after the sudden death of her first husband in 1972. She was very active at Collegiate School, a devoted fan at all of her children's games, and all of her children's friends were always welcome in her home. She married Robbie in 1989 and he shared her love of travel and they enjoyed many trips together. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren at family gatherings and at the river, as well as lunch with her special friends. She was a special person who had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh and she will be truly missed by all who knew her. A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Bliley's - Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Avenue. Burial will be private. He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 50 years, Dorothy A. Rollins; one daughter, Patricia A. Rollins (Ellis C. Howard Jr.) of Hadensville, Va.; three sons, Junius Rollins Jr. and Mitchell W. Rollins of Gum Spring, Va. and Neal O. Rollins (Sara) of Glen Allen, Va.; four beloved grandchildren, Ellis C. Howard III, Bria, Zoe and Amy Rollins; one sister, Dorothy L. Minor; one brother, Richard Rollins; stepfather, Waverly Shelton of Goochland, Va.; two uncles, Herman Watson (Claddy) of Gum Spring, Haywood Watson (Virginia) of Montpelier, Va.; four sisters-in-law, five brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. ROZYCKI, Ksenia "Anne" died on January 22, 2009 at Beth Sholom Gardens, Richmond, Va. She was born April 15, 1920 in Lvov, Poland, to Joseph and Mina Litwak (nee Schaerf). By courage, and luck, she survived Nazi occupation and in 1948 emigrated to England. There, she married a young engineer, Kazimierz, and they soon joined her brother- and sister-in-law, Joe and Hulda Ronar, in Montreal, Canada. While there she gave birth to a son. In 1970, the family moved to Boston, and she went to work for Prudential Insurance, retiring 19 years after moving to the New Jersey office in 1975. She and her husband came to the Summerhill retirement community, Bon Air in 1998 to be close to their grandchildren. In Richmond, she loved working with children at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and on the pediatric ward at St. Mary's Hospital. Predeceased by her parents, two brothers and two sisters and, in 2004, her husband, she is survived by her son, Henry; grandchildren, Mike, Sarah and Jo; niece, Sophie Zaretsky; and great-nephews, Daniel and Jeffrey Zaretsky. Those wishing to may contribute to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the United States Holocaust Museum. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to practice tolerance, understanding and peace. |

SHEPHERD, Mae Reynolds, 90 formerly of Richmond passed away January 30, 2009 in Roanoke, Va., where she was a resident of Our Lady of the Valley. She was born June 19, 1918 in Buckingham County. She was the daughter of the late Lelia Morris Reynolds and William H. Reynolds. She was preceded in death by her four sisters and two brothers, Vernell R. Brown, Dorothy D. Reynolds, Rebecca R. Shepard, Lelia R. Barnes, William W. Reynolds and Woodrow H. Reynolds; as well as her grandson, Derek M. Edwards. Mrs. Shepherd graduated from the Lynchburg Training School for Nurses in 1938 at age 20 and had a long career as a registered nurse at Grace, Retreat and Stuart Circle Hospitals. She ultimately retired from Phillip Morris, Inc., where she was an industrial nurse. She is survived by one son, John R. Edwards, M.D. and his wife, Mary Ann; and granddaughter, Teresa Ann Edwards, all of Roanoke. Mrs. Shepherd leaves behind many nieces and nephews including, Wesley Raper of Richmond, who made his home with her from the age four. A funeral service will be held Monday, February 2, 2009, 12 noon at the chapel of Puckett Funeral Home in Farmville, Va. with interment to follow in Westview Cemetery. Family will receive friends Monday 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice. |

STOKES, Mr. Antonio A., 39, of Mechanicsville, Va., departed this life suddenly on January 28, 2009. He was the son of Vernon Waters (stepmother, Geraldine) of Suffolk, Va., and the late Vanessa Stokes. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bessie and Robert Waters; and maternal grandfather, Fred Stokes. A native of Suffolk, Va., Antonio resided in Mechanicville, Va., with his wife and family, where he attended Faith Landmark Ministries, in Richmond, Va., and accepted Christ into his life. He was employed at Tyson's Food in Richmond, Va. Antonio was a loving father, husband and friend. He enjoyed life, and love to cook and bake for his family and friends. He was a thoughtful, caring person, who loved people and loved life. He enjoyed waking up each morning and cooking breakfast for his wife. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Stacey R. Stokes; two children, Mya Jacobs and Makeen Ricks, both of Suffolk, VA.; three stepsons, Lamar Hoggard, Gary Eley, both of Mechanicsville, Va., and Dontral Eley of Suffolk, Va.; two sisters, Anita Waters of Suffolk, Va., and Christina Waters of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Adrin Stokes of Richmond, Va., Cordrell and Dermaine Waters, both of Suffolk, Va.; maternal grandmother, Lillian Stokes; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. STONE, Willis Lee, 71, widower of Eleanor Allen Stone, died Friday, January 30, 2009. Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey Lee Stone and wife, Terrah, of Arizona and Timothy Scott Stone of Emporia; daughter, Dawn Stone Chenault and husband, Stan, of Mechanicsville; three granddaughters, Megan Michelle and Micah McKenzie Stone and Eleanor Dawn Chenault; three grandsons, Samuel Emerson Stone, Garland Stanley Chenault IV and Stone Ashby Chenault; one brother, Richard Winfree Stone of Chase City; and a number of nieces and nephews. Son of the late Maxey Elmore and Elizabeth Leidig Stone, Mr. Stone was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Hamilton Stone. Known as "The Voice of Emporia", Mr. Stone spent his 49-year career at WEVA Radio in Emporia, becoming President and General Manager upon his father's death in 1959. He was a former president of the Emporia Jaycees, former Central Region Director of the Virginia Association of Broadcasters and former president and active member of the Emporia Rotary Club, receiving a Lifetime Media Achievement Award in 2007. Mr. Stone was a former president of both the Emporia-Greensville Chamber of Commerce and Emporia-Greensville Industrial Development Corporation. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, February 2, 2009, at Calvary Baptist Church in Emporia, where Mr. Stone was a member. Interment will follow at Emporia Cemetery. SULLIVAN, Mrs. Ruby Whitman, went to be with the Lord she loved and joyfully served on Monday, January 26, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse William Whitman and Mittie Winders Whitman; her husband, John Linwood Sullivan; her daughter, Rose Marie Barwick; and her four sisters and six brothers. She is survived by her two daughters, Gayle Sullivan Wooldridge and Helen Sullivan Haskell, both of Richmond; four grandchildren, John Grayson Wooldridge (Melanie) of Ocean Pines, Md., Elizabeth Garrett Wooldridge of Charleston, S.C., Amy Carneal Lovelace (Hector Lopez) of San Francisco, Calif., and Robert Sullivan Lovelace of Alexandria, Va.; and one great-grandchild, Henry Wooldridge Hudson. Ruby was a former member of Webber Memorial Baptist Church and a longtime, faithful member of Bon Air Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school for over 35 years, sharing her love of the Lord and pouring her life into others. She will be cherished in memory as a vibrant, Christian lady and loving mother and grandmother. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 29, at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. Interment will be private. Sidney A. Tudor Jr. of Matoaca, Va., died suddenly at his residence on Jan. 29, 2009. Sid was born in Petersburg, Va., on March 4, 1924. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1942. Sid served in the U.S. Air Force with the 9th Air Force Division and was a veteran of World War II. He was a faithful member of Matoaca United Methodist Church. Sid is survived by his wife, Doris Bennett Tudor, of 47 years; three sons, David, Tommy and Paul Tudor; two stepsons, John W. Tucker Jr. and Barry L. Tucker; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Linwood Tudor and wife, Roslyn, of Georgia. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Tudor. Sid requested that his body be donated to the State Anatomical Program of Virginia. There will be a memorial service at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at Matoaca Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Jo Ellen Hetherington and The Rev. Guy Murdock. Jan 30, 2009 The memorial service for Vivian Keith Bowman, 71, of Martinsville, who died Jan. 28, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Victory Baptist Church in Fieldale with Pastors Dan Schelling and David Naff officiating. Burial will be at a later date. She was born in Patrick County on Jan. 11, 1938, to Esley Howard Keith and Gracie Keith Cockram. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Keith Bowman and Stephen Anthony Bowman. She worked at Collinsville Printing and at Tultex for several years. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Charlie M.
