Harold R. Amdursky NORFOLK - Harold Robert Amdursky, 75, passed away Jan. 27, 2009. Harold will always be remembered with a smile which lit up a room, and a true love of life and family. He possessed a generosity of spirit that made him a stranger to no one. He was a longtime member of the Hampton Roads sales community and loved his work as well as those he met along the way. The family would like to thank the staff of Sentara Newtown Nursing Center for the good care they took of Harold for the last two years. He is survived by his two daughters, Meril Amdursky and her husband Joseph Hearst and Loren Amdursky and her husband Edward Nelson; four grandchildren, Jonah and Micah Nelson and Megan and Sydney Hearst; a sister, Gerry Epstein and her husband Jerry; a niece, Ronnie Epstein; and a nephew, Lance Epstein. A funeral will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in Ohef Sholom Temple by Rabbi Rosalin Mandelberg. Burial will follow in the King David Section of Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. A native of Spring Lake, N.C., he was a member of South Norfolk Baptist Church and Moose Lodge Chapter No. 966. Surviving are his loving wife, Shelba Jean Barnes; his mother, Winniford Johnson Barnes; three sons, John Hamilton and wife Isay, Kelly Hamilton and Jose Rivera; five sisters, Kim Benson, Amy Dyer, Dollie Eskola, Eddie Stertz and Judy Gansman; one brother, David Barnes; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Bell, Joseph Nathan

BELL, Joseph Nathan, 89, of Ashland, died January 28, 2009. He is survived by his son, Mark Bell; a sister, Ann Tynis and her family of Richmond. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Bell, a captain in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and an RN at Beth Sholom; and his sister, Mary Bell Richardson. Mr. Bell was born in Prince Edward County and raised on a family farm near Darlington Heights, Va. He worked for DuPont in Richmond before entering the U.S. Army to fight in WWII. He was a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, a WWII B24 combat pilot in Europe, and a member of VFW Post 2583. In his retirement, he was a supervisor at American Filtrona Corp., a farmer, a member of the Ruritans and a past secretary of the Hanover County Electoral Board. A private service will be held in Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers and memorial gifts, do something special with your family.

Mattye Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Joseph Brooks. She is survived by her three children, Lloyd Brooks and Dorothy "Cookie" Elliott, both of Tappahannock, and William "Billy" Brooks of Richmond; six grandchildren, Michael Elliott, Danny Elliott, April Mundie, Chris Brooks, Heather Brooks and Karen Parker; eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. BURCH, Bertha "Bea" Burruss, 82, of Powhatan, passed away January 27, 2009. She was the daughter of the late Littleton Coleman Burruss and Bertha Catherine Meeks. She is survived by her husband, Robert Guy Burch Sr.; four sons, Robert Guy Burch Jr., Donald Thomas Burch, John Michael Burch and Patrick Littleton Burch; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Burch was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, George, Leo, Ray, Fred, John, Ashton, Archibald, Thomas and William Burruss; and Henetta Schlaster and Catherine Lacy. Bea loved gardening and was a member of the Powhatan Garden Club. She was a great cook and won numerous blue ribbons at the State Fair. Her family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bliley's-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a senior chief after 26 years and was employed by General Electric. He was predeceased by his father, William Burns. Chavis, Mag D.B.

Mag Dora Battle Chavis passed away on Jan. 26, 2009, at the age of 86 years old. She was a proud servant of the Lord, a matriarch whose love nurtured and cared for each member of her family, and a friend whose heart and home were always open. Mrs. Chavis was born on Oct. 19, 1922, to the late Henry Battle and the late Sarah Pitt Battle in Enfield, N.C. She was the oldest of six children. Her only surviving sibling, Sadie B. Christian, was her closest friend and confidant. Her other siblings, who preceded her in death, were Tom Battle, Anna Graves, Mary Francis Battle and Beulah Diggs. On Nov. 27, 1938, she married Lonnie Chavis Sr., and they had four children: Lonnie Chavis Jr., the late Joe Henry Chavis (deceased shortly after birth), Sadie Chavis Bragg and the late Maxine Chavis Jefferson. Mr. and Mrs. Chavis moved to Petersburg, Va., in 1941, and Mrs. Chavis became an active member of the community. Most importantly, she was a loyal and dedicated member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess, a member of the Missionary Ministry, the Senior Ladies' Usher Board, the Nurses' Unit and the Senior Ladies' Sunday School Class. In 2004, she was recognized by the church as a "Pillar of Metropolitan Baptist Church." In addition to her service to the church, Mrs. Chavis was a member of the Electa Chapter No. 7, Order of Eastern Star, PHA and an employee of Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp. for 35 years. Mrs. Chavis enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning and playing bingo. Above all, she loved to care for her family and her friends. She welcomed all into her home and especially loved to prepare her signature dishes for her family and friends. She is survived by her committed son, Lonnie Chavis Jr.; devoted daughter, Sadie Chavis Bragg (Alvin Sr.); caring sister, Sadie B. Christian (Roland Sr.); four loving grandchildren, Lisa Chavis Gregory (Algie), Monica Chavis Goode, Gregory L. Jefferson Sr. (Jana) and Alvin L. Bragg Jr. (Jamila); five beloved great-grandchildren, Alisa Monique Gregory, Gregory L. Jefferson Jr., Noël Alexandra Jefferson, Evan Keane Jefferson and Maya Maxine Bragg; a daughter-in-law, Mamie Stith Hamilton; an aunt, Ethel Megginson; and an uncle, Aaron Battle; nieces and nephews, Mary Williams (Claude), Anna Colter, Deborah Winfield (Herbert), Roland Christian Jr., Rufus Graves Jr., Keith Barkley (Irma), Robert Diggs (Amanda) and Tony Diggs; three caretakers, Monica Goode, Shinika Shaw and Zina Woodson; and a host of family and friends too numerous to list individually, all of whom loved and cherished Mrs. Chavis. A home-going service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 1021 Halifax St., Petersburg, Va. An organ donation was made to the North Carolina Eye Bank. He was born in Martinsville on Sept. 30, 1950, to Leonard Tilden Sharpe and Opal Price Sharpe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Ann Durant and Sandra Sharpe. He worked as a forklift mechanic at American of Martinsville for 28 years, and he attended Trinity Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Deborah Farmer Sharpe of the home; a daughter, Trinity Sharpe Hopkins of Mebane, N.C.; a son, Stewart Sharpe of Stoneville, N.C.; a sister, Ramona S. GIBBS, Kenneth McRae, died of cancer on January 25, 2009 at his home in Shacklefords, Va. He was born in Richmond, Va., May 4, 1942, son of Kenneth Bethel Gibbs and Jessie Simmons Gibbs. He was educated in Richmond at Highland Springs High School. He continued his education in the U.S. Navy for the next six years and throughout the rest of his life at work related schools and seminars. He retired from the Department of Corrections Administrative Office as a computer analyst in 2007. He was a member of the choir at Providence United Methodist Church and very active in his community. He is survived by his wife, Dottie Gibbs; and three children, Christal Michelle Howerton of Chase City, Va., M.B. Helton of Richmond, Va., and Dan R. Butler of Tarboro, N.C.; three grandchildren, Daniel and Lauren Howerton of Chase City, Va., and Joshua Daniel Butler of Shacklefords, Va.; a number of cousins, two very cherished, Eddie Wood and Donna Holloway of Providence Forge, Va.; and a lifelong friend, Raymond Brooks of Mineral, Va. She was the Valedictorian of her senior class at Montpelier High School, a homemaker for many years and finished her career as a cafeteria manager in the Henrico school system. She served as a secretary of the Senior Bowling League and was a member of the Young at Heart Bowling Team. Jan 29, 2009 James Hylton Roop, 63, of 7360 Fairystone Park Highway, Bassett, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at his home. He was born in Patrick County on March 12, 1945, to Howard Roop and Corrine Cummings Roop. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Rutledge; and a brother, Steve Roop. He worked as a truck driver for several years with L.E. Hutchens Co. and Noland Co. Surviving are his wife, Patsy Wells Roop of Bassett; two daughters, Kelly Roop of Collinsville and Kim R. Walker of Bassett; a son, Stephen Roop of Martinsville; two brothers, Tommy Roop of Bassett and Archie Roop of Patrick Springs; and three grandchildren. Edward Millan Sr. NORFOLK - Dr. Edward Millan Sr., 89, passed away peacefully Jan. 26, 2009. A native and lifelong Norfolk resident, he was born Feb. 4, 1919, and was the son of the late Charles and Sadie Millan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Arriett Barnard. A 1937 Maury High School graduate, Dr. Millan continued his education graduating from the Southern College of Optometry. He followed his father in the optometric practice and was one of the longest practicing optometrists in the state of Virginia. The family optometric practice has been in continuous existence for more than 100 years. Dr. Millan was past president of the Tidewater Optometric Society, the Virginia Optometric Association as well as the Virginia Academy of Optometry. Dr. Millan was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, serving on the Administrative Committee and Parish Council. He was active in the Knights of Columbus and served as a State Deputy and a Past Grand Knight. He was on the Board of Directors of the Sons and Daughters of Lebanon and helped raise funds for St. Jude Children's Hospital. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years, Georgette; his loving children, Charlotte M. Cohea and husband Thomas of Norfolk, Marie M. Egert of Chesapeake and Edward Millan Jr. of Norfolk; sister, Gloria M. Saliba of Norfolk; grandchildren, Danielle J. Cohea of Cleveland, Ohio, and Alexandra M. Egert of Chesapeake; and a nephew, Leslie Barnard and wife Jan of Chesapeake. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ called home my beloved husband, and our father, Mr. Wilbert Casey Parham, 63, of 17319 Boydton Plank Road, DeWitt, Va., on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at the Battlefield Park Nursing Home, Petersburg, Va. He was a native of DeWitt, and the son of the late Will and the late Susie Wyatt Parham. He was born July 19, 1945. He was a member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church, DeWitt. In his younger years he was a great baseball player. He was also a retired employee of the Britt Trucking Inc. with 30 years of service. He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him. He leaves to cherish a legacy of precious memories, his loving and devoted wife, Willie Anna Parham of DeWitt; three sons, Irving Parham (Caroline) of Mt. Rainier, Md., Wilbert Parham Jr. of DeWitt, Telley Parham (Arlisa) of McKenney; one precious granddaughter, whom he loved dearly, Telnisha LeShay Parham of McKenney; two stepgrandchildren, Alexandria Parham and David Irving of Mt. Lynda Rogers Piver, 67, of Narrows, Va., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at her home after a graceful and dignified battle with cancer, surrounded by her family. Lynda was born in Augusta, Ga., on October 4, 1941, and was the daughter of the late Dewitt Clifton and Ruth McMekin Rogers., She graduated from Dublin High School in Dublin, Ga., and attended Flora MacDonald College in Red Springs, N.C. A lifetime Presbyterian, Lynda served as an elder in First Presbyterian Church of Narrows. Lynda was always active in volunteer work, serving as Chaplain and Chairman of the Youth Committee of the Junior Service League of Orangeburg, S.C. She was an emergency medical technician with the Edisto Beach, S.C., Volunteer Rescue Squad, and a member and officer in the Edisto Island Flotilla, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary., Lynda was long active in Scottish heritage organizations, among them, Scottish Foundation of the Virginia Highlands, Clan Donald U.S.A., Clan Graham Society, Coastal Scottish Heritage Society and Savannah Scottish Games Committee, Savannah, Ga., often serving an officer in these organizations. She was also a member of George Pearis Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Chaplain and before her illness, one year as Regent., She is survived by her husband, Forrest Lee Piver, of Narrows; five daughters and one stepdaughter and their families, Teresa Graham Stark and son-in-law, James Keith Stark, grandchildren, Sarah Morgan Stark and James Keith (Chip) Stark Jr., of Wilmington, N.C.; Lisa Graham Pinckney and son-in-law, Charles Andrew Pinckney, grandchildren, Thomas Wayne Byrd and Andrew Dewitt Pinckney, of Rock Hill, S.C.; Virginia Graham Wilkins and son-in-law Adam Wilkins, grandchildren, Olivia Marie Wilkins and Robert Harrison Wilkins, of Savannah, Ga.; Christine Graham Kzzinsky, of Savannah, Ga., Laurian Graham Zimmerman, grandson, Edward Alexander Zimmerman, of Tega Cay, S.C., stepdaughter, Harper Piver Lurie and stepson-in-law, Robert Lurie, of Tempe, Ariz. Jeanne M. Rabinowitz VIRGINIA BEACH - Jeanne M. Rabinowitz died Jan. 28, 2009. She was 67 years old. As a member of the "Lost Class of 1959" at Maury High School, Jeanne Davis joined a number of the Ghent neighborhood students who took a ferry to Portsmouth for schooling. Jeanne began her career in travel as a stewardess for National Airlines. As trip coordinator of the Mogul Ski Club and founding organizer of the annual JCC holiday ski trip for more than two decades, she introduced numerous Tidewater families to skiing. She continued to plan trips for CI Travel and was an active member of the Norfolk Chapter of ORT (Organization for Rehabilitation and Training). Family and friends enjoyed Jeanne's high-flying enthusiasm. Last to leave the dance floor and first to lob from the baseline, Jeanne's spirit and style remain an inspiration. She is survived by her husband, attorney, Ralph Rabinowitz; son, Ned Asher Rabinowitz; daughter, Cay Sophie Rabinowitz and her husband Christian Rattemeyer; son, Erik Rabinowitz, his wife Kourtney and daughters, Hannah Renee and Rosalyn Jeanne; sister, Frances Levy Birshstein; and niece, Debbie Eken. ROWE, Anne Martin Wilson, 74, died peacefully Saturday, January 24, 2009, at her home in Fredericksburg. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Josiah P. Rowe III, publisher of The Free Lance-Star newspaper. A native and lifelong resident of Fredericksburg, Mrs. Rowe lived a full life centered on family and community. She played leadership roles in an array of community and state organizations whose activities included historic preservation, conservation, the arts, medical care and education. She served on the board of the Garden Club of Virginia, chaired the board of the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center, and served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church. She attended Sweet Briar College, on whose board she later served, and graduated from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children and their spouses, Jeanette and Nicholas Cadwallender of Fredericksburg, Florence and Richard Barnick of Fredericksburg, Sallie and Raymond Roberts of Westfield, N.J., and Josiah and Erin Rowe of Cheshire, Conn. She also is survived by eight grandchildren, Jess, Julia, and Mary Cadwallender, Andrew, Scott, and George Barnick, and Harrison and Katherine Roberts; and a brother, F. Lewis Wilson Jr. and his wife, Bettie, of Stafford County. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at The Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg with burial afterward in City Cemetery. The Rev. Mary Lou Rowen SUFFOLK - Mary Lou Rowen, 77, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away at her home in Suffolk Jan. 27, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mary was born in Emporia, Kan., in 1931, the first of 11 brothers and sisters. Mary spent her early years growing up in Topeka, Kan., until she met and married her beloved husband, Harold Rowen, in 1953. Harold spent nearly 50 years with the Woolworth/Kinney Shoe Corp. and had varied management responsibilities which moved them to California, Illinois and New Jersey. Mary loved the outdoors and travel, and was able to visit the world with her husband. Mary is survived by her husband, Harold, their six children and nine grandchildren: Michael James Rowen of Virginia Beach; Margaret Ann Hyatt, mother of Amanda and Garrett Hyatt of Virginia Beach; Joan Marie Rowen, mother of Philip and Miriam Knepp of Hillsborough, N.J.; Ronald Mark Rowen of Cane Ridge, Tenn.; Roger John Rowen, father of Rachael Rowen of Union, N.J.; and Janet Kay Glendinning, mother of Danny, David, Dustin, and Sara Glendinning of Conway, S.C. Alexander O. Runaldue Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Alexander Okerson Runaldue Jr., 83, of the 2300 block of Brigadoon Court, passed away Jan. 27, 2009, with his six daughters by his side. He was born in Norfolk and was the son of the late Alexander O. Runaldue Sr. and Lillian Detmer Runaldue. He was predeceased by his sister, Louise Hibbert Sarlo. A Roman Catholic, Mr. Runaldue attended Sacred Heart Elementary School, Maury High School, the Norfolk Division of William and Mary and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was a veteran of the World War II Army Air Corps 91st Bomb Group and member of the Local Musician's Union No. 125, American Federation of Musicians, Solo Club of Tidewater and the Shag Club of Virginia Beach. A jazz musician for 70 years, his first job was delivering singing telegrams by bicycle for the Western Union however, he was most proud of his first paid gig of $3 at the age of 13. The Al Runaldue Orchestra was the one of the first bands to play on local weekly television. Al performed for three presidents: Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, as well as many Virginia governors. In addition to his many solo performances, he accompanied Tommy Newsom, Glen Miller, Gene Krupa, Doc Severson, Elliot Lawrence, the Pat Curtis Big Band, Warren Covington, Tommy Gwaltney, Danny Thomas, Pat Sajak and Vanna White, Engelbert Humperdink and The Three Stooges. Al taught private piano and keyboard lessons, as well as jazz piano at The School for the Gifted and Talented. He worked 25 years in the automobile business with Green Gifford in sales and management where he was known as "Blue." He was an usher at Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel. He is survived by his daughters, Mary Anne Copeland and husband Andy of Richmond, Susan R. Brown and husband Bob, Cindy D. Runaldue, L. Tracy R. Miller and husband Timmy, Ali L. Runaldue and Nikki R. Webb and husband Stephen, all of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Alex, Annie, Nia, Nickolas and Abbie; special cousin, Delma Lee Wright; and many nieces and nephews. SHERRON, Walter F. Jr., 53, of Richmond, passed away on January 25, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife, Trish Mertens Sherron; his stepson, Will; his daughter, Katy; parents, Alease and Fred Sherron Sr.; his brother, Ben and wife, Beth, and daughter, Amanda; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Walter attended the University of Virginia. He performed German folk dancing at Busch Gardens when it opened in 1974. He was a founding member of the S.G.T.E.V. Hirschjager Bavarian Folk Dance Group in Richmond in 1975 where he danced for almost 30 years. Walter loved volleyball. He started with travel leagues and then joined the Richmond Volleyball Club where he played for over 20 years. He was still spiking the ball in Spring 2008. Walter worked for the Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission since July 1988. He was a member of Monument Heights Baptist Church for most of his life. He joined Derbyshire Baptist Church in 2003 with his wife and children. He was a member of the Beacon Sunday school class and helped with the children's ministry. Walter's warm smile, sense of humor, patience, and integrity will be his legacy to his children, family, and friends. A memorial service celebrating Walter's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2009, at Monument Heights Baptist Church at Libbie and Monument Avenue. Friends will be received in the fellowship hall after the service. WATKINS, Mr. Willie Saunders III, entered eternal rest on Friday, January 23, 2009. A third generation owner of W.S. Watkins and Son Funeral Home, Mr. Watkins was a native of Richmond, Virginia. He was born March 24, 1941 to the late Thelma Anderson Watkins and Willie S. Watkins Jr. He graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School as valedictorian in the class of 1958. Some of the professional organizations to which he belonged include the National Business League, Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Richmond Funeral Directors Association, Virginia Morticians Association, National Funeral Directors Association, and Pi Sigma Eta Mortuary Fraternity. These activities have not precluded his involvement in community and civic activities with either memberships or board affiliations with the Better Business Bureau, Richmond Teachers Federal Credit Union, Richmond Community Senior Center and Adult Day Care Center. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #65, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the Astoria Beneficial Club. Mr. Watkins, known in some circles as "Billy," enjoyed people, loved spectator sports, had a great sense of humor, and was a skilled ballroom dancer. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 39 years, E. Dianne Nelson Watkins; and their three children, Willie S. Watkins IV (and his son Connor R. Jearlene met Charles and they dated, fell in love and later they were married on August 23, 1960. Charles and Jearlene had been married for 48 years. Within this union were born eight children. She was a devoted wife, and a loving and caring mother and grandmother. George A. Welt Sr. PORTSMOUTH - George A. Welt Sr., 80, went into our heavenly Father's waiting arms Jan. 27, 2009. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; he was born Feb. 6, 1928, in Deckerville, Mich., to the late Clifford E. and Marjorie Pattullo Welt, and was the oldest of four children. He graduated from Lapeer High School in 1948 and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. George used his GI apprenticeship to become a linoleum, carpet and soft tile mechanic for 42 years. He retired from Chesapeake Public Schools Maintenance Dept. after 16 1/2 years. He was an assistant for Boy Scout Troop 214, a volunteer for Chesapeake Fire Dept. and Bennetts Creek Rescue Squad, a two gallon blood donor, a duck and tenpin bowler, a hunter and an all-around fisherman. George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Annis Williams Welt; a daughter, Nancy W. Schwarz (Timothy) of Chesapeake; three sons, George A. Welt Jr. (Connie), Stephen W. Welt (Tara) and Bruce A. Welt, all of Portsmouth; two sisters, Ruth Peckenpaugh and Mary Krieger (Charles); a brother, Dale E. Welt (Doreen); seven grandchildren, Bethany Schwarz (fianc Louis Mitchell), Crystal Johnson (Billy), Melissa Watson (Chris Jr.), Michael Welt, Lynne Skeeter (Brian), Faye Lindsay (Stuart) and Norman Taitz Jr.; and 10 great-grandchildren. George loved his brothers and sisters in Christ at Central Baptist Church, where he was a member of the church and the Senior Sunday School Class and the family wishes to thank them for all the prayers, visits, cards and support they received during his illness; also to Heartland Hospice and their staff for their care. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Central Baptist Church, 1200 Hodges Ferry Road, Portsmouth, by the Revs. Tim Robertson and Dave Simpson.
