Mary E. Arnold CHESAPEAKE - Mary Elizabeth Arnold, 76, passed away Jan. 27, 2009, in a local hospital. Mrs. Arnold was born in Norfolk County Nov. 21, 1932. She worked at Chesapeake General Hospital for many years. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Lillian I. and Isiacar Stevens; two brothers, Willie C. Stevens formerly of Portsmouth and Joseph L. Stevens formerly of Chesapeake. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 60 years, Willie Arnold Sr.; two sisters, Lillian V. Stevens and Janice S. Gibbs of Chesapeake; 16 children, William Arnold of Atlanta, Ernestine Daughtry, Mary Tucker, Lillian Lawrimore, Willie Arnold Jr., Leslie Arnold, Donald Alexander, Lamont Arnold, Antonio Arnold, Shekida Green, Leslie Arnold Jr., Star Arnold and Brittany Arnold of Chesapeake, Ronald Alexander of Suffolk, Kimberly Arnold of Virginia Beach and William Frost Jr. of Norfolk; 29 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Thomas Edward Asbury Jr., 67, of Bland died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at Bland County Nursing and Rehab Center in Bastian. At his request, he will be cremated. ATHANS, Danny Lee, 56, of Richmond, passed away on January 23 in his home. Danny was the owner of St. John's Realty, Inc. in Church Hill and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Richmond, where he served on the vestry and as a greeter. Danny was a graduate of Oscar Smith High School and attended the University of Mississippi. He later transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in business. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Air Force. Danny is survived by his parents, Gardner L. and Elizabeth Perry; six siblings, Ricky, Dana, Roxann, Bobby, Cindy and Bud; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Ruby Crabtree Atwell, 93, of Ceres died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009. Funeral service was held Thursday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m. at Sharon Lutheran Church with Pastor Will Shelton and the Rev. Mary Jane Behnke VIRGINIA BEACH - Mary Jane Behnke went to the Lord Jan. 26, 2009. Mrs. Behnke was a native of New London, Wis., and was a longtime resident of Virginia Beach, most recently in the Marion Manor assisted living facility. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clarence "Art" Behnke; two sons, U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Patrick James Behnke and Peter Arthur Behnke. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Patrice Behnke of Corpus Christi, Texas; a granddaughter, Amanda Behnke of Arlington, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Theresa Ballard and husband John Ballard of Chula Vista, Calif.; as well as numerous cousins across the country. She was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Mary Jane worked for several years as a registered nurse in the recovery room of Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, and was well remembered for her cheerful and helpful personality. She was also very active in the various social activities that were held at Marion Manor. She had a zest for life. Madie L. Chappell HERTFORD - Madie Lane Chappell, 90, formerly of 362 Swing Gate Road, died Jan. 27, 2009, in South Haven Manor Nursing Home. Born in Perquimans County, she was the widow of Clarence Silas Chappell and the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Ethel Trueblood Lane. Mrs. Chappell was a homemaker and a devoted loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was also a member of Woodville Pentecostal Holiness Church. Mag Dora Battle Chavis passed away on Jan. 26, 2009, at the age of 86 years old. She was a proud servant of the Lord, a matriarch whose love nurtured and cared for each member of her family, and a friend whose heart and home were always open. Mrs. Chavis was born on Oct. 19, 1922, to the late Henry Battle and the late Sarah Pitt Battle in Enfield, N.C. She was the oldest of six children. Her only surviving sibling, Sadie B. Christian, was her closest friend and confidant. Her other siblings, who preceded her in death, were Tom Battle, Anna Graves, Mary Francis Battle and Beulah Diggs. On Nov. 27, 1938, she married Lonnie Chavis Sr., and they had four children: Lonnie Chavis Jr., the late Joe Henry Chavis (deceased shortly after birth), Sadie Chavis Bragg and the late Maxine Chavis Jefferson. Mr. and Mrs. Chavis moved to Petersburg, Va., in 1941, and Mrs. Chavis became an active member of the community. Most importantly, she was a loyal and dedicated member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess, a member of the Missionary Ministry, the Senior Ladies' Usher Board, the Nurses' Unit, and the Senior Ladies' Sunday School Class. In 2004, she was recognized by the church as a "Pillar of Metropolitan Baptist Church." In addition to her service to the church, Mrs. Chavis was a member of the Electa Chapter No. 7, Order of Eastern Star, PHA and an employee of Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp. for 35 years. Mrs. Chavis enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning and playing bingo.Above all, she loved to care for her family and her friends. She welcomed all into her home and especially loved to prepare her signature dishes for her family and friends. She is survived by her dedicated son, Lonnie Chavis Jr.; devoted daughter, Sadie Chavis Bragg (Alvin Sr.); committed son-in-law, Thomas Jefferson Jr.; caring sister, Sadie B. Christian (Roland Sr.); four loving grandchildren, Lisa Chavis Gregory (Algie), Monica Chavis Goode, Gregory L. Jefferson Sr. (Jana) and Alvin L. Bragg Jr. (Jamila); five beloved great-grandchildren, Alisa Monique Gregory, Gregory L. Mr. Bobby Dean Dye, age 72, of Doran, Va., died Wed., Jan. 21, 2009, at a Richlands, Va., hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Swords Creek, Va., and was a son of the late Swifty John and Effie Robinette Dye, both Russell County natives. He made his home in the Swords Creek and Doran, Va., areas his entire life, was a disabled coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 1256 of Duty, Va. He was a U. S. Army Korean Conflict Veteran and was of the Pentecostal faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Shirley Alice Osborne Dye, and one grandson, Ronnie Lee Hurt, II. Roy Elswick, age 68 of Richlands, Va., passed away Tues., Jan. 20, 2009 at his home. He was born in Red Ash, Va., and was the son of the late Charlie William and Gracie Kennedy Elswick. Roy served his country in the U.S. Army and was of the Pentecostal Holiness belief and a lifelong resident of the area. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. GIBBS, Kenneth McRae, died of cancer on January 25, 2009 at his home in Shacklefords, Va. He was born in Richmond, Va., May 4, 1942, son of Kenneth Bethel Gibbs and Jessie Simmons Gibbs. He was educated in Richmond at Highland Springs High School. He continued his education in the U.S. Navy for the next six years and throughout the rest of his life at work related schools and seminars. He retired from the Department of Corrections Administrative Office as a computer analyst in 2007. He was a member of the choir at Providence United Methodist Church and very active in his community. He is survived by his wife, Dottie Gibbs; and three children, Christal Michelle Howerton of Chase City, Va., M.B. Helton of Richmond, Va., and Dan R. JOHNS, C. Mitchell "Skip," departed this life on January 26, 2009 from natural causes. Mr. Johns was a beloved teacher and coach who taught at Trinity Episcopal School and previously at Collegiate School. Talented in so many ways, he was an avid writer and student of English, Philosophy, and The History of American Film. He most recently was a documentary film maker concentrating on the nascent film industry of the 1920s through the 1940s. A service and reception for a celebration of his life will be held at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens on Saturday, January 31, at 1 p.m. As a strength and conditioning coach, he relied on his experience as a collegiate National Champion and a professional football player, and was quick to encourage his students to find their full potential. John Earl Lewis, age 89 of the Thompson Valley Community in Tazewell, Va., died Thurs., Jan. 22, 2009 at his home. He was born March 13, 1919 at Washington, DC, and grew up in Marshallberg, N.C. He lived in Beaufort, N.C. from 1948 until 1975 when he and his wife, Lyde Thompson Lewis, moved to Tazewell, Va., where they resided on her family farm in Thompson Valley, Va. Mr. Lewis was saved by grace as a teenager and joined the Ann St. Methodist Church in Beaufort, N.C., with his wife, Lyde, in 1950. In 1975, he became a member of the Main St. United Methodist Church in Tazewell, Va. He was active in his churches with Bible studies, serving as Sunday School teacher and choir member. Mr. Lewis was also a Shriner, 33rd degree Mason, a Paul Harris Fellow and member of the Tazewell Rotary Club, was past president of the Tazewell Chamber of Commerce where he was awarded Citizen of the Year. He was a charter member and past chairman of the Thompson Valley Community Emergency Services, Inc., which includes the Thompson Valley Fire Department, Rescue Squad, and the Thompson Valley Community Center. His career expanded many years and included various endeavors of which he worked very hard and enthusiastically to achieve success. He always carried a "can do" attitude and was an extraordinary fundraiser on many projects. He was a Corporal in the US Army serving in Europe during World War II. After the war, he began his career as a Chrysler Plymouth Dodge Dealer for Port City Motors in Morehead City, N.C., and then became Sales Manager for Dick Parker Ford in Havelock, N.C. During his years in North Carolina, he also served as President of East Carteret High School Booster Club and was instrumental in the construction of the athletic facilities. After moving to Tazewell, Va., he worked as Sales Manager of Ramey Chevrolet in Tazewell, Va. He also worked with the Tazewell County Industrial Development Corporation and actively participated in the development of the Cavitts Creek Dam. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hilda Brown Bertram, and his wife of 55 years, Lyde Thompson Lewis. Survivors include three sons, Robert Shavender Lewis and John Courtney Lewis, both of the Thompson Valley community in Tazewell, Va., and William Thompson Lewis and wife, Charlotte Stanford Lewis, of Carrollton, Ga.; three grandchildren, Dr. Zachary Thompson Lewis and wife, Ashley Peery Lewis, Lindsay Lewis Jennings and husband, William Newton Jennings, and Chesley Lauren Lewis; three great grandchildren, Taylor Grace Lewis, William Newton Jennings, and George Hutchinson Jennings; and his compassionate caregivers Pat Atkinson, Cheryl Horn, Anna Marie Miller, Tazewell Community Home Health and Legacy Hospice. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Sat., Jan. 24, 2009 at Main St. United Methodist Church in Tazewell, Va., with the Rev. Kathie Wilson-Parker officiating. LIGON, Emily Hodges, 99, of Richmond, passed away January 24, 2009 at Lakewood Manor in Richmond, Va. Born in Starr, S.C., May 8, 1909, she was the daughter of Roxanne Davis and Baxter Hardy Hodges. She was predeceased in 2002 by her husband of 67 years, Sebastian Cater Ligon. They lived most of their lives in Charlotte, N.C. She was a 1931 honor graduate of Winthrop College and a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, N.C., where she served as Sunday School teacher, committee chairman and president of the Women of the Church. Her chief interests were church, family, history and genealogy. She served as regent of the Liberty Hall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the James Lane Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and was a board member of the Hezekiah Alexander Museum Auxiliary. She is survived by a daughter, Katherine Ligon James and son-in-law, Charles M. James, of Manakin-Sabot, Va.; a sister, Caroline Clark of Augusta, Ga.; three grandsons, Charles Lee James and wife, Wendy, of Charlotte, N.C., Hardy Ligon James and wife, Courtney, of Richmond, Va., and Tayler Hodges James of Richmond, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Devon, Griffin and Katherine of Charlotte, N.C., Caroline Katherine and Margaret Emily of Richmond, Va. Mary Lou Mabe, age 88 of Richlands, Va., went home to be with her heavenly father, Fri., Jan. 23, 2009 in a local Richlands, Va., hospital following a brief illness. When she reached the gates of heaven and presented her resume for the position of an angel, Saint Peter declared that she already had 88 years of experience. Mary was born in Hawkins County, Tenn., and she was the daughter of the late, Martin and Maggie Florence Pruitt Jeter, former Tazewell County natives. She had spent her life being a full time homemaker, dedicating herself to her family so she could lead and guide them as they grew. Mary was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend, she liked spending time sewing, crocheting, making crafts and when she could, visiting those who were sick and praying for them. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith, a life time resident of Tazewell County and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She brought love into many lives and she will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clarence W. "Bill Buck" Mabe; sons, Clarence Andrew Mabe, Edward Martin Mabe; one brother; three half sisters; two half brothers; and four grandchildren, Elaina Lee Baldwin, Curtis Baldwin, Jr., Elaina Mabe and Anthony Aaron Baldwin. Lynwood Floyd McGlothlin, age 77 of Richlands, Va., passed away Mon., Jan. 19, 2009, at his home following a brief illness. He was born in Tazewell County, Va., and was the son of the late Loranze and Laura Reedy McGlothlin. Lynwood was a graduate of the 1949 class of Richlands High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard and was stationed in Korea. He was a retired Tipple Mechanic for Island Creek VP#3 and a member of the United Mine Workers Association. He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist church and a lifelong resident of the area. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Clara F. McGlothlin; a son, Tim McGlothlin; two brothers, Leonard and Harold McGlothlin; one sister, Inez Norman. Martavius L. Mizell PORTSMOUTH - Martavius Lamont Mizell departed this world Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, in Portsmouth. Although he was here only three short months, his life was a blessing to his loving parents and family. Martavius was born Oct. 8, 2008, in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center and weighed 8 pounds and 9 ounces. He loved to smile, loved to laugh and loved to play. He was given the nickname "Little Luke" by his grandmother, but was mainly called "Marty" by others. Even though Martavius' time on earth was short, we know his spirit is now free and that he is resting in the hands of God and smiling upon us. Mr. Melvin Junior Proffitt, age 79, of Shortts Gap, Va., passed away Fri., Jan. 23, 2009 at his home. Born at Buchanan County, Va., he was the son of the late Henry Melvin Proffitt and Ocie Belle Davis Proffitt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester Proffitt and Brady Proffitt; one sister, Darlene Ball, and one granddaughter, Kimberly Diane Baldwin. Mr. Proffitt was a retired coal miner and he enjoyed working around the house and listening to blue grass music. Jeanne M. Rabinowitz VIRGINIA BEACH - Jeanne M. Rabinowitz died Jan. 28, 2009. She was 67 years old. As a member of the "Lost Class of 1959" at Maury High School, Jeanne Davis joined a number of the Ghent neighborhood students who took a ferry to Portsmouth for schooling. Jeanne began her career in travel as a stewardess for National Airlines. As trip coordinator of the Mogul Ski Club and founding organizer of the annual JCC holiday ski trip for more than two decades, she introduced numerous Tidewater families to skiing. She continued to plan trips for CI Travel and was an active member of the Norfolk Chapter of ORT (Organization for Rehabilitation and Training). Family and friends enjoyed Jeanne's high-flying enthusiasm. Last to leave the dance floor and first to lob from the baseline, Jeanne's spirit and style remain an inspiration. She is survived by her husband, attorney, Ralph Rabinowitz; son, Ned Asher Rabinowitz; daughter, Cay Sophie Rabinowitz and her husband Christian Rattemeyer; son, Erik Rabinowitz, his wife Kourtney and daughters, Hannah Renee and Rosalyn Jeanne; sister, Frances Levy Birshstein; and niece, Debbie Eken. Emmett Wesley Robertson Jr., 66, of Boyd Tavern died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at his home. A graveside service with full military honors was held Monday, Jan. 26, at Holly Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Buddy Woodson officiating. He was born Feb. 3, 1942, in Bland County. He was a graduate of Bland County High School Class of 1959. He then entered the U.S. Army in 1960 and served until he was honorably discharged in 1966. After discharge from the Army, he drove for Trailways for 25 years. He worked for Tiger Fuel Co. until he retired. He then started his own business, Robertson's Small Engine Repair, which he operated from his home. Over the years and many miles traveled, many friends were made and have been left behind to remember him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elnora Miller Robertson; a son, Charles Wesley Robertson; a stepdaughter, Nancy Lee Johnson; and a brother-in-law, Clarence R. Thurman Jr. Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Anna Lee Robertson; his father, Emmett Wesley Robertson Sr.; stepdaughter, Tammy Johnson of Scottsville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James "Jimmy" D. and Pearl Robertson, Robert E. and Sue Robertson, all of Bland; two sisters, Ruth Robertson of Bluefield and Becky Via of Bland; a stepgrandchild; three nieces, one nephew, two great-nieces and two great-nephews, all of Bland; special little neighbor, Ashley Brooke Carson of Troy; and will be sadly missed by his little four-legged friend, Brownie. Alexander O. Runaldue Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Alexander Okerson Runaldue Jr., 83, of the 2300 block of Brigadoon Court, passed away Jan. 27, 2009, with his six daughters by his side. He was born in Norfolk and was the son of the late Alexander O. Runaldue Sr. and Lillian Detmer Runaldue. He was predeceased by his sister, Louise Hibbert Sarlo. A Roman Catholic, Mr. Runaldue attended Sacred Heart Elementary School, Maury High School, the Norfolk Division of William and Mary and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was a veteran of the World War II Army Air Corps 91st Bomb Group and member of the Local Musician's Union No. 125, American Federation of Musicians, Solo Club of Tidewater and the Shag Club of Virginia Beach. A jazz musician for 70 years, his first job was delivering singing telegrams by bicycle for the Western Union however, he was most proud of his first paid gig of $3 at the age of 13. The Al Runaldue Orchestra was the one of the first bands to play on local weekly television. Al performed for three presidents: Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, as well as many Virginia governors. In addition to his many solo performances, he accompanied Tommy Newsom, Glen Miller, Gene Krupa, Doc Severson, Elliot Lawrence, the Pat Curtis Big Band, Warren Covington, Tommy Gwaltney, Danny Thomas, Pat Sajak and Vanna White, Engelbert Humperdink and The Three Stooges. Al taught private piano and keyboard lessons, as well as jazz piano at The School for the Gifted and Talented. He worked 25 years in the automobile business with Green Gifford in sales and management where he was known as "Blue." He was an usher at Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel. He is survived by his daughters, Mary Anne Copeland and husband Andy of Richmond, Susan R. Brown and husband Bob, Cindy D. Runaldue, L. Tracy R. Miller and husband Timmy, Ali L. Runaldue and Nikki R. Webb and husband Stephen, all of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Alex, Annie, Nia, Nickolas and Abbie; special cousin, Delma Lee Wright; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Ernest B. (Pedro) Sargent, age 89, of Catawba, Va., formerly of Cedar Bluff, Va., passed away Thurs., Jan. 22, 2009, in a Charlottesville, Va., hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Bandy, Va., and was the son of the late William Baylor and Grace Vernon Sargent. He had made his home in the Cedar Bluff, Va., area all of his life prior to moving to Catawba, Va., four years ago. He was a former self employed Produce Salesman and was a member of the Mt. Herman United Methodist Church in Bandy, Va. He was a U.S. Army World War II Veteran and was a member of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 of Richlands, Va. He was in the Fourth Armored Division and served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Beulah Sparks, and three brothers, Myrl, Lloyd, and Norais Sargent. Flo Clyde Sharitz, 91, of Milton, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. in the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Rufus Spence officiating. Interment will be in West End Cemetery. She was the eldest daughter of the late Churchwell and Katie Webb of Wytheville. She was born July 11, 1917, in Sylvatus. She was preceded in death by her husband, Forel Kenneth Sharitz; a brother, James Allan Webb; a sister, Alma June Hedrick; and grandson, French Kenneth Sharitz. She was a resident of Coalwood, W.Va., for many years and was active in the community, church, PTA, Women's Club and all worthy causes. She also operated Sharitz's Grocery on West Lee Highway in Wytheville for several years and was an active member of the Petunia Christian Church and choir. She was a phenomenal lady. Diagnosed with diabetes at age 26, she never allowed it to limit her many activities in her community and church or the extraordinary support and nourishment of her family and friends. Survivors include her only child, Kenneth Neale Sharitz, and his wife, Donise, and their daughters, Sheila Ann Johnson and Amanda Clyde Bentley and their families ; three sisters, Bonnie Fay Flinchium of Wytheville, Virginia Dare Callahan of Dublin, and Willie Lou Martin of Lynchburg; seven great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Kathryn Smock VIRGINIA BEACH - Kathryn "Leola" Smock, 78, was called to her rest by her Lord Jan. 28, 2009. Leola was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada and was serving in the Royal Canadian Navy when she met her husband Edwin K. Smock of the U.S. Navy. They were married March 2, 1957, in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada. Leola and Ed have six children, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Leola is survived by her husband, Ed "Smokie"; two sons, Edwin K. Smock Jr. and wife Shannon of Manassas, Va., and Robert "Mark" Smock and wife Kim of Smithfield; four daughters, Juliann Davis and husband Mike of Chesapeake, Diana Smock of Greenville, N.C., Lori Fadeley of Leesburg, Va., Patricia Key and husband Jimmy of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Marie Walker and Norma MacDonald, both of Windsor, Ontario, Canada; grandchildren, E.K., Brandon, Bobby and wife Andrea, Lindsay, Melissa and husband Kyle, Danny, Megan, Sarah, Krystal, Stephanie and Taylor and great-grandchildren, Alexis, Rachel, Mark and Kaitlyn. Leola's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her life and her reward. She never asked for more. She was known for always enjoying a "good cup of tea." "Gram" will be dearly missed. For the past 33-plus years she worked as a volunteer for St. Matthew's Catholic Church, the American Red Cross, the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Hampton Roads and the Animal Assistance League. She was awarded the American Red Cross Tidewater Chapter Volunteer of the Year April 28, 2002, in gratitude for financial development. SNEAD, Betsy Haynie, surrendered her four-year battle with breast cancer on Monday evening while staying with her daughter in Charleston, S.C. She leaves behind her husband of 33 years, James Daniel Snead; daughter, Marie Lockett Snead and future son-in-law, Christopher John Hoyle. Betsy has been a longtime resident of Urbanna, Virginia. She gave her service as a radiology technician to Richmond Memorial Hospital, Lee Davis Medical Center, Urbanna Family Practice and Henrico Doctors' Hospital. Her dedication to service was profound, volunteering even during her treatment. Mrs. Patsy Kelly Strader, age 90, of Daleville, Va., formerly of Richlands, Va., died Tues., Jan. 20th, 2009 in Daleville, Va. She was born in Richlands, Va., and was a daughter of the late Alonzo Hyatt and Amanda Torbert Kelly. Mrs. Strader made her home in the Richlands area most of her life, was a graduate of Richlands High School, and was a former employee of the Mattie Williams Hospital Business Office and General Shale Accounting Office. She was a beloved member of the Richlands First United Methodist Church, was very active in the Sunday School Department, and a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William Robinson Strader, and one sister, Peggy Kelly. Survivors are: one daughter, Elizabeth Bonsack Strader-Sweeny and husband, Dr. Dennis G. Sweeny, of Blacksburg, Va.; one son, Mr. William R. SULLIVAN, Mrs. Ruby Whitman, went to be with the Lord she loved and joyfully served on Monday, January 26, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse William Whitman and Mittie Winders Whitman; her husband, John Linwood Sullivan; her daughter, Rose Marie Barwick; and her four sisters and six brothers. She is survived by her two daughters, Gayle Sullivan Wooldridge and Helen Sullivan Haskell, both of Richmond; four grandchildren, John Grayson Wooldridge (Melanie) of Ocean Pines, Md., Elizabeth Garrett Wooldridge of Charleston, S.C., Amy Carneal Lovelace (Hector Lopez) of San Francisco, Calif., and Robert Sullivan Lovelace of Alexandria, Va.; and one great-grandchild, Henry Wooldridge Hudson. Ruby was a former member of Webber Memorial Baptist Church and a longtime, faithful member of Bon Air Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school for over 35 years, sharing her love of the Lord and pouring her life into others. She will be cherished in memory as a vibrant, Christian lady and loving mother and grandmother. THOMAS, Rev. Wilbur E., 81, of Quinton, went to be with the Lord January 28, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Bernice Thomas of Richmond. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Fern Thomas; daughter, Patricia Koury and husband, Dr. John Koury; son, James Thomas and wife, Rebecca; granddaughter, Alexandra Koury; grandsons, John Thomas Koury, Jeremy Thomas, and Joshua Thomas and wife, Deana; and great-grandsons, Weston and Harrison Thomas. A World War II U.S. Army veteran, Rev. Thomas served as a Methodist minister throughout the Virginia Conference for 33 years. He lived a life of faith and love sprinkled with a good sense of humor. He was a true gentleman, living as a shining example to his family, friends and congregations. He last attended Corinth United Methodist Church, where he volunteered to assist with services until his health declined. TRIBBLE, Robert R.C. "Curty," 78, passed peacefully at home on January 28, 2009. Mr. Tribble was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him, and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Bunnie G. Tribble; and daughter, Wanda T. Hagy. He is survived by his sons, Robert R. Tribble (Dorothy) and Thomas N. Virginia Beatrice Vandyke, age 68 of Richlands, Va., passed away Sat., Jan. 24, 2009 in a Bristol, Tenn., hospital. She was born in Tazewell County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Graham and Beatrice Looney Brown. She had made her home in the Richlands area all of her life and had worked for Fleetwood Mobile Home, Dairy Queen, Acme Supermarket, and Wardell Quick Stop. She was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Christopher Dale Vandyke, and one brother, Harold Brown. WATKINS, Mr. Willie Saunders III, entered eternal rest on Friday, January 23, 2009. A third generation owner of W.S. Watkins and Son Funeral Home, Mr. Watkins was a native of Richmond, Virginia. He was born March 24, 1941 to the late Thelma Anderson Watkins and Willie S. Watkins Jr. He graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School as valedictorian in the class of 1958. Some of the professional organizations to which he belonged include the National Business League, Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Richmond Funeral Directors Association, Virginia Morticians Association, National Funeral Directors Association, and Pi Sigma Eta Mortuary Fraternity. These activities have not precluded his involvement in community and civic activities with either memberships or board affiliations with the Better Business Bureau, Richmond Teachers Federal Credit Union, Richmond Community Senior Center and Adult Day Care Center. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #65, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the Astoria Beneficial Club. Mr. Watkins, known in some circles as "Billy," enjoyed people, loved spectator sports, had a great sense of humor, and was a skilled ballroom dancer. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 39 years, E. Dianne Nelson Watkins; and their three children, Willie S. Watkins IV (and his son Connor R. Watkins), Karen Watkins-Westebee (Bruce) and Lauren D. Watkins; and his sister, Valorie Patrice Watkins, Esq.; his great-aunt, Mrs. Nancy A. Joan Rae, a native of Portsmouth, was the daughter of the late Gordon Burney Garthright and the late Olive Vera Newton and stepfather Loyd Newton. She was a member of the Class of 1955 of Woodrow Wilson High School, a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority of which she was a recipient of the Outstanding Girl of the Year Award and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and its Prayer Chain.
