Barbara Ann Delaney of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2009. She lived her life surrounded by friends; her life partner, Rick Church; and mother, Theresia Robertson. In addition to Rick and Theresia, she is survived by cousin, Olli Wank; and two stepsisters, Sandra Robertson and Bonnie (Jack) Wrigley. A Roanoke resident since age five, Barbara graduated from Cave Spring High School, and attended Wake Forest University on scholarship. She had the audacity to converse in Latin, and this razor fine intellect continued throughout her life. Barbara started her business career as Accessories Buyer for Sydney's chain of women's clothing stores. In the early 1980's, she began a real estate career, becoming a Real Estate Broker specializing in the Old Southwest Historic District, most recently with Park Place Realtors. As a graduate of REALTORS Institute, a Certified Residential Specialist, an Accredited Buyer Representative and e-PRO, Barbara served the Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors (RVAR) on the Education Committee for over 20 years and taught Fair Housing for new members of the association for more than 10 years, as well as serving on the Cultural Diversity Task Force in 2003. Though real estate was her profession, Barbara's life work was people. Excelling as a teacher and trainer, she quickly recognized a person's talents and brought out the best in them. Stories about Barbara are full of her wit and humor, and references unfailingly speak of her ethics and integrity. The family wishes to especially thank Julie Watt and Carilion Hospice, as well as Barbara's angel, Pam Eades, for their kind and crucial care.
