BELL, Louis Herbert Sr., 83, of Providence Forge, went to his Heavenly reward on Saturday morning, November 29, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie G. Bell. Mr. Bell is survived by his son, Louis Herbert Bell Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Chester; his daughter, Barbara Wilson of Chesterfield; his grandchildren, William Wilson Jr. and Mary Cox and her husband, Richard; and his great-grandson, Thomas Ray Cox II; his sister, Kathleen Dulin of Maryland; as well as many friends. Mr. Bell was a retired machine operator from American Tobacco Company, a member of the Providence Forge Volunteer Rescue Squad for 17 years as well as a Deacon and Lifelong member of Calvary United Methodist Church. He also was a WWII of the U. S. Army from 1944 to 1946. Sheldon M. Congleton CHESAPEAKE - Sheldon M. Congleton, 69, passed away Nov. 30, 2008, in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. Born in North Carolina, he was the son of the late Robert and Euleigh Congleton. Sheldon was an avid North Carolina college basketball fan. He retired after 30 years in the transportaton industry, both maritime and trucking. Before his illness, he enjoyed the Outer Bank of North Carolina. Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Cheri M. Congleton of Chesapeake; a daughter, Katelynne; and beloved dogs, Sam and Maggie. He is also survied by his sister, Linda Hathaway and nephew, John Hathaway, both of Kelford, N.C., and niece, Staci Hathaway of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., as well as numerous aunts and cousins. Betty Harmon Durst DURHAM - Betty Harmon Durst, 71, died Nov. 29, 2008, in Duke Medical Center after a lengthy battle with cancer. Betty was born in Norfolk, the daughter of A.J. Harmon Sr. and Iva Mae Harmon. She grew up in Raleigh, N.C., and later moved to Durham with her late husband B.E. "Buddy" Durst Jr. Betty was co-owner of Millenium Auto Group with her son David "Sport" Durst. Betty is survived by her son, David E. Durst and her daughter Elizabeth Durst McDonald; three grandchildren, William Hunter, David Cameron and Morgan Elizabeth Durst; two brothers, A.J. Clynard Russell Frazier VIRGINIA BEACH - Clynard Russell Frazier passed away Nov. 27, 2008, in Sentara Leigh Hospital. He was born Aug. 26, 1915, in Guilford County, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Thomas Russell Frazier and Cora Pickett Frazier. Mr. Frazier was a local contractor and was instrumental in the construction of Cavalier Manor, Laurel Manor, Hilltop Manor and several other local developments. He was a 32nd degree Freemason. Mr. Frazier was an avid gardener and known far and wide for his home-cured country hams and ham biscuits. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Juanita Gaines Frazier; four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Jean Frazier of the home; his daughters, Geneva Frazier of Virginia Beach, Dolores Frazier Stakes of Roanoke, Va.; his sons, Thomas Russell Frazier and wife Linda, Steve Clark Frazier and wife Royce; and his stepson, Sherman Leslie Reed, all of Virginia Beach. William Edward Kessler Sr., 84, of Petersburg, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, after an extended illnes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar James Kessler Sr. and Nellie Strong Kessler; brother, Oscar "Buck" Kessler; and sister, Dorothy K. Johnson. William served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Randolph and later retired from Hercules after 32 years of dedicated employment. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Doris Bryant Kessler; sons, Bill Kessler Jr. of Petersburg and Michael D. Kessler and wife, Karen of Colonial Heights; grandson, Michael Ryan Kessler and wife, Holly; great-grandson, Ryan William Kessler, all of Colonial Heights; sisters, Nell E. ROBINSON, Marye Covington, of Hopewell, Virginia, peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2008 after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Marye was 84 years old. She was one of 12 children raised by her mother and father, Parthenia and Willie Covington. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Charles W. "Robbie" Robinson, who was her devoted care-giver for the past 10 years; her daughter, Gwendolyn Willard and husband, Marshall, of Richmond; her daughter-in-law, Julie Robinson of Chester; and sisters, Marjorie Covington of Ashland and June Hundley of Seabrook, Texas. She was preceded in death by her loving son, Charles Jerry Robinson. Marye will be dearly missed by friends and family and lovingly remembered as a deeply devoted wife and mother who always thought of others first and asked for very little for herself. Her talents were many and especially evident as a self-taught artist, accomplished seamstress, and outstanding cook. For many years Marye enjoyed a successful career as a Sales Manager with Miller and Rhoads, in Petersburg, where she was recognized for her excellence in sales and service. She was a dedicated member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Hopewell until Parkinson's complications kept her at home. Ronda Gelb Stein NORFOLK - Ronda Gelb Stein passed away Nov. 30, 2008. She is at peace. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Evelyn Gelb (New York City); sister, Renee Roth (Bayshore, N.Y.); daughter, Andra Stein (Norfolk); son and daughter-in-law, Stuart and Joy Stein; two adorable grandchildren, Jennifer and Stacey Stein (Potomac, Md.); as well as a loving and extended family, including brothers-in-law, Jerry Stein (Norfolk) and Nathan Zipperman (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.); sister-in-law, Katherine Kapler (Palm Desert, Calif.); and nieces and nephews around the country. Ronnie moved to Norfolk from Brooklyn, N.Y., to marry the love of her life, Herbert Stein, in 1956. She fell in love with the community, and the community fell in love with her. Ronnie raised a loving family, and supported Herbert in building the Stein family business. Ronnie will always be remembered as a kind and caring person. She never had a bad thing to say about anyone and was always supportive and caring for others. Ronnie always put others first. Of course, none of that was true at the Mah Jong table, where she ruled for years. Her smile would light up the sky on even the darkest days. STEWART, Virginia Wright Lankford, 89, a retired Richmond Public Schools teacher, died Thursday, November 13, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband, James LaFayette Stewart. She is survived by her children, Victoria S. Bethel and husband, David, and Bob Stewart and wife, Pattie; four grandchildren, Jacqueline Bethel, Bobby and Michael Carey Stewart and Bridget Crusan; one niece, two nephews, five great-nieces, two great-nephews, one great-great-nephew and one great-great-niece. Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of George Albert Lankford Sr. and Alice Carey Lankford of Capron, Va. She received her B.S. degree from Madison College (now James Madison University) in 1940. She taught school in Kempsville, Holland and Suffolk, Va. before coming to Richmond in 1952, where she taught until she retired in 1979. Prior to June 2000, Mrs. Stewart was a dedicated member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and an elder for two terms. She was an active worker with the Presbyterian Women, where she served as Circle Leader for many years. Since June 2000, she has been a member of Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church and active with the Presbyterian Women there. Willie R. Thomas Sr. of Ettrick, departed this life Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at McGuire Veterans Medical Center. He was born May 26, 1933, to the late Willie Thomas and the late Lucretia Wilson Thomas in Littig, Texas. Mr. Thomas graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Elgin, Texas, in 1952. He attended Prairie View A&M College and graduated from Chapman College with a B.A. in Business Administration/Economics. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 1954, and married the former Pearlie Mae Brown on Jan.15, 1955. During his long and successful military career, Mr. Thomas rose to the rank of chief warrant officer, senior grade, CW-3 and traveled extensively throughout the United States, Germany, France and Vietnam, where he served two combat tours. He earned many commendations, awards and decorations during his distinguished service in the Army, including the Meritorious Service Medal, three Army Commendation Medals and three Bronze Star Medals. After retiring from military service in 1975, he worked as a civilian for the Headquarters Defense Commissary Agency, U.S. Department of Defense at Fort Lee where he received additional commendations and awards. He retired from the Agency in Sept. 1995. Following retirement from civil service, he devoted several years to making prize-winning Texas barbecue as the owner of Thomas' Bar-B-Q in Ettrick. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and was raised as a Master Mason in Mt. Nebo #43 in Petersburg. He was also a member of the Benedict Civic Club Inc., and past member of the Chesterfield County Camp Baker Board of Directors. An avid athlete since childhood, sports was an integral part of Mr. Thomas' life. He served as a football, basketball and baseball coach for the Ettrick Youth Sports Association (EYSA) and also served as the association's third and seventh president. Working with the Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation, he expanded and improved the amenities at Ettrick Park and also established an annual festival for the community at the park. He was preceded in death by his brothers, L.D Thomas and Roy Dale Thomas. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Mrs. Pearlie M. Thomas of Ettrick; one son, Will R. Thomas II and daughter-in-law, Erica Nash-Thomas of Springdale, Md.; one sister, Louise Thomas Green of Los Angeles; a sister- and brother-in-law, Geneva and Haywood McNeil of Austin, Texas; brother-in-law Clifford Brown of Houston; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m.Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax St., Petersburg, with the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs Sr., pastor, officiating. WRIGHT, Custis Carter, 95, of Lakewood Retirement Community, died Sunday, November 30, 2008. She was a native of Amherst County, Va. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Tyree Lawson "Bud" Wright of Richmond; her two daughters, Betsy Shires of Richmond and Susan W. Faulconer and husband, Mark of Madison Heights; and three grandchildren, Emily Lawson and husband, James Williams of Atlanta, Charles and William Cash of Madison Heights. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Custis Wright was a graduate of Randolph Macon Women's College with a B.S. in Chemistry. She taught in the Amherst County schools and was a chemist for American Cyanamid Co. in Piney River, Va. Memorial service will be held at Ascension Episcopal Church, 253 S. Main St., Amherst, Va. 24521-0810 at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3. Ida Irene Young VIRGINIA BEACH - Ida Irene Young, 103, went to be with her Lord Nov. 30, 2008. She was born in Beckley, W.Va., on Jan. 15, 1905, to the late Alice Ashworth and Dan Griffith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Draper Young and by her two sons, Howard Daniel and Billy Ross Young. She leaves to mourn her passing, celebrate her life and carry on her legacy three sons, Henry Albert Young and his wife Wheat, Alvin Raymond Young and his wife Beatrice and Robert Vernon Young; two daughters, Betty Wills and her husband John Calvin and Ida Jane Curfman and her husband Robert; 21 grandchildren, 51 great- grandchildren and 31 great- great-grandchildren. She was a gifted seamstress and retired as manager of the Tailor Shop at the Naval Air Station. Ida deeply loved her family, her extended family and her church. She was a founding member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church in Norfolk and Bayside Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. She was loved by everyone who knew her. Ida was a rare treasure and she will be missed. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bayside Baptist Church. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Rosewood Memorial Park.
