While attending Marist College, now the Marist School, in Atlanta, Bill excelled in sports, earning the nickname "Dynamite" for his explosive performance on the field. He enlisted in the Navy to serve his country during WWII as a Navy Corpsman, and while stationed at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, aided in the mending and rehabilitation of wounded U.S. service personnel. As a member of the Greatest Generation, Bill carried clear memories and lessons of the Great Depression and his military service throughout his life as he pursued career and family. His standing within the company to which he was so devoted is immortalized in Pfizer, Inc.'s 150-year history publication. An avid sportsman and lover of the outdoors, Bill enjoyed wing shooting, fishing and walks in the country at Cedar Farm, his family's residence in Goochland County, Virginia. Patricia Woodfolk of Petersburg has a unique view on history that few have seen. As we approach the end of the Bush presidency and the beginning of the Obama presidency, Woodfolk has a perspective that few others have. Woodfolk, who is now retired, has seen five presidents fill the Oval Office during her time at the Office of Administration, next door to the White House. The amazing thing is that the job was only supposed to last for 90 days, but stretched into five administrations. The Petersburg native and Virginia State University worked in Washington, D.C., at the Securities and Exchange Commission as a statistical assistant. She eventually worked at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., but returned to Washington in 1976 to work the U.S. Army, Military District of Washington, Civilian Personnel Division. Two years later, she received a phone call from the Executive Office of the President. She was hired in the newly formed Office of Administration, which provides administrative services to the Executive Office of the President. She worked for the Carter Administration through the current Bush administration. She retired in 2002 after 32 years working for the federal government, 24 of which were in the Office of Administration. During her time working for the White House, she got to meet presidents and attend historic events. Woodfolk has numerous pictures from White House functions such as the Easter Egg Roll, Christmas at the White House, presidential birthday parties and state visits. After retiring, she returned home to Petersburg where she dabbles in interior decorating, photography and gardening along with taking care of her parents. "It was always exciting," she said. "I always say my daughter grew up in the White House." Woodfolk says despite working at the White House, she never caught the political bug. She only attened one inauguration - the first inauguration of Bill Clinton. But now, she might return to Washington to attend the inauguration of Barack Obama. If she does, it will be one more piece of history the Petersburg resident has witnessed. |
