Julian N. Dashiell NORFOLK - Julian N. Dashiell, 88, died Dec. 11, 2008, at his home in Great Falls, Va. He was born March 15, 1920, in Norfolk, to the late Harry W. and Nannie Cullen Dashiell. Julian was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II. He also worked all over the world as a general manager for Caltex Corporation (Chevron) for 32 years before retiring in 1985. Julian was the beloved husband of Simone Dashiell, loving and devoted father of Alexander Dashiell of Washington, D.C., and Stephanie Morelli of Stanford, Conn. He was the proud grandfather of Jade and Stella. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 7 p.m. in Adams-Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden St., Herndon, Va. GOGGIN, Fred E., 82, of Richmond, won his battle with cancer and went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 10, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dean Goggin; daughter, Terri G. Karluk; grandchildren, Brent Karluk and wife, Carli, Rachel DelVecchio and husband, Rob, Susan Karluk and fianc, Cody White, Emily Goggin, James Albany, Kyle Goggin and Nadine Davis; great-grandchildren, Brooke and Blake Karluk, Blayze Albany and Kyle Davis; brother, Harry S. Goggin and wife, Phyllis; sisters-in-law, Esther Adcox and husband, Wallace, and Judy Harless. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, and many friends whom he loved dearly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, David Goggin. Fred was a person with a contagious smile and a great sense of humor who never met a stranger. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Navy. Fred was a charter member of Derbyshire Baptist Church, president of Richmond Guano Co., former member of Downtown Richmond Rotary Club and a member of Hermitage Country Club. He served on the Board of Directors of North Carolina-Virginia Plant Food Institute of which he was president in 1969. When this organization disbanded Fred helped organize the Plant Food Association of North Carolina, and served on the Board of Directors from 1972-1974 and 1977-1979. He was appointed by Governor Baliles to serve as a member of Virginia Agricultural Credit Committee in 1986. He also served on numerous other agricultural committees and organizations. He was a former member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as council president and treasurer. Mr. Henry was honored by being named "Humanitarian of the Year" by the City of Martinsville., After his retirement from DuPont Company, Mr. and Mrs. Henry moved to Winchester, Va., in 2001. Mr. Henry was very active member in his church, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stephens City. Vada Hylton, 97, of Floyd, Va., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 11, 2008, at Skyline Manor. She was an active member of Falling Branch United Methodist Church, a former member of the Home Demonstration Club and a 4-H Club Leader. She leaves behind many wonderful friends and neighbors whom she loved. She was a former employee of Donnkenny Mfg. of Floyd, leaving to care for her mother. She had a great sense of humor, loved to tell stories of the "Good Ole Days" and wrote poetry. She was an excellent seamstress and loved to make quilts for her family. She was predeceased by her parents, Solomon and Dora Vaughn; brother, Garver Vaughn; sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Bryan Childress; also by her devoted husband, Unice C. Hylton; and a loving daughter, Hazel Hylton Blackwell. Surviving are her sister, Irene Harris; sisters-in-law, Minnie Vaughn, Norene Horton, June Ferguson, Etholene Wills, Pauline Hylton; and special nephews and nieces who were so kind to visit. Mrs. Catherine Kelly, aka "Babysis," 67, of 2203 Waverly St., Hopewell departed this life Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2008 at John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell. She was a native of Hopewell and the daughter of Irene Kelly and the late Wilbur S. Kelly. At an early age she confessed Christ as her Lord and Savior. LAUZON, Kenneth Vincent Sr., 77, of White Stone, loving husband, father, son, brother and friend, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2008, surrounded by his wife and dear friends. Vincent died following a brief but courageous battle with cancer and heart disease. His family was blessed to have him in their lives and to know that he is now in Heaven. Born March 11, 1931 to Hilliard and Winifred Lauzon, Vincent spent his early years in Teaneck, New Jersey, graduating from Teaneck High School and Perkiomen Prep. He graduated from Fordham University with a Bachelor of Business Management in 1955. He was co-owner of H. Lauzon Furniture Company, Teaneck, New Jersey. Vincent served as President of the Chamber of Commerce in Teaneck. Vincent remained active in the community through his membership in The Elks, The Teaneck Rotary Club, The Kilmarnock-Irvington-White Stone (KIWS) Rotary Club and Habitat for Humanity of Kilmarnock. He had a lifelong passion for building projects in his home and community. He is survived by his loving wife of 23, Norma Hansen Moore Lauzon; sons, Kenneth Vincent Lauzon Jr. and Timothy Lauzon; and daughters, Claire Lauzon-Vallone and Michelle Lauzon; and former wife, Barbara Colahan Lauzon.; stepsons, Clifford Moore (pre-deceased), Scott Moore, Bradford Moore; and stepdaughter, Dawn Moore Cook; grandchildren, Mark Vallone, Brian Vallone, May Lauzon, William Lauzon and Emma Lauzon; stepgrandchildren, Kirsten Moore, Cameron Moore, Martina Cook and Clayton Cook. Virginia Boone (Ginny) Metzler, 93, of Salem, Va., died on Thursday, December 11, 2008. She was born on August 29, 1915, on Goose Creek in Floyd County, Va., the 10th of 12 children of Charles and Mary Odessa Boone. Ginny often spoke about the good times she had growing up on the family farm with her siblings. She graduated from Check High School where she played on the track, baseball and basketball teams and studied her favorite subjects, English and biology. In her early twenties she moved to Harrisburg, Pa., where she met and married Henry O. (Doc) Metzler. After World War II, Doc and Ginny and the first of their three children moved to Salem, Va. Ginny said of herself, "There isn't much that can be said about me except I loved people and talked too much." She was happiest when she could do things to help others, had a genuine love for people and felt blessed to have so many wonderful friends. Her family would like to thank all the people who were so kind and helpful to her in her later years when she could no longer drive., Ginny was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church; President of the PTA of Academy Street and Broad Street Schools; President of the Salem Woman's Club; charter member of the Salem Junior Woman's Club; one of two surviving charter members of the Salem Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star; member of the American Legion Auxiliary; and member of the Salem Historical Society. She loved being a member of the Salem Seniors and the Garden Club, was very active in the Cub and Boy Scouts and in many capacities in local politics., Ginny loved gardening and had a garden up until the time she moved from her home in Salem to assisted living. She prided herself on having the first ripe tomato of the season. She loved to cook and was happiest when her friends and family were well fed. She kept her mind alert by solving word puzzles and enjoyed writing her children and grandchildren letters, always including clippings of funny cartoons from the local paper., Ginny was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Doc; and 10 of her 11 siblings, Andy, Alpha Link, Ella Poff, Vivian Board, Garnette Reed, Cliff, Jake, Hazel Connor, Frances Lucas and Bud., Ginny is survived by her sister, Amelia (Peg) Ragland, of Newport News; three sons, William Metzler, of Salem; David Metzler, of Salem; and Charles Metzler and his wife, Nancy, of Charlotte, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Jeff, Shawn, Amber, Drew and Hampton Metzler, Amanda Metzler, and Elizabeth, Andrew and John Metzler; and six greatgrandchildren., She had many friends and a large family. On Dec. 8, 2008 our hearts were saddened from the passing of our family member Mr. William Woodrow Pritchett Sr. Mr. Pritchett was born to the late Willie and Margaret (Maggie) Pritchett on Jan. 2, 1910. Mr. Pritchett was a lifelong and devoted member of First Baptist Church, Petersburg. He worked at National Division which was later called Allied Chemical and now Honeywell (Plant A), Hopewell, and after 25 years of employment he retired. The love he had for all of his family and friends was unconditional. Nine children were born to him and the late Mary Ruth Pritchett. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Pritchett; one sister and four brothers; his daughter, Shirley Kates; two granddaughters, Cheryl Harrison Ferguson and Angelor Gee Salih; and a grandson, Aaron Goode. Left to cherish his memories of five generations are eight children: Irving Pritchett (Penney) of South Carolina, Dorothy Gee, Marion Harrison (Jerome), Viola Edith Higgins, Valerie Pritchett, Jacquelyn White, all of Petersburg, William Pritchett Jr. (Ann) of New York, and Patricia Cooke (William) of Richmond; a stepdaughter, Margeret Henry of Petersburg; a son-in-law, James Kates of Petersburg; 27 grandchildren, four among them caregivers, Natalie Mosley Chambliss (George) Jr., Patsy McLaughlin, Alice Williams (Howard), and Vanessa Kates Olajuwon; 62 great grand children; 13 great-great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Maude Brown of Colonial Heights and Helena Thomas of Petersburg; extended family members, Helen Hines of Petersburg and Alice Burney of Tennessee; and a host of nieces including Margaret Nicholson (Harvey) of North Carolina; nephews, step nieces, step nephews, cousins other family and friends. On Thursday, December 11, 2008, Louise Hartness Russell, of Blacksburg, Va., left the weeds and thorns of this life to join the Heavenly Father where the blossoms will never fade. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Edgar V. "Buck" Russell Jr., who went ahead in 1988 to plant the dahlias, and prune the roses and irises in the Heavenly gardens. Now, together, they shall enjoy the blooms of eternity with the Master Gardener. Her family rejoices in the knowledge that this year, for the first time, she and Buck will together share Christmas with the One whom Christmas is all about!, Louise was also preceded in death by, her father and mother, the Rev. Robert Nelson Hartness and Sarah Mitchell Hartness; her brother, Maj. Gee. Harlan Hartness; her granddaughter, Carolyn Yvonne Russell; and her great-grandson, Matthew Grant Russell., Left to cherish the memories of her love and care are her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Dick Quible, of Blacksburg; her son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Connie Russell, of Dublin; her granddaughter and her husband, Jennie and Ted Farmer, of Dublin; her grandson and his wife, Dean and Gina Russell, of Dublin; and her great-grandchildren, Rachael and Hannah Farmer, and Luke and Erin Russell, all of Dublin., She was born March 16, 1912, at Lancaster Courthouse, Va., attended public school in Eastern Virginia, and State Teachers College at Farmville, now Longwood College. Louise taught school in Chesterfield County for four years before marrying a young chemistry instructor at VPI in 1938. For three years she was actively engaged in the Senior Woman's Club, in which she was president, until her husband was called to active military duty in 1941. After the family's return to Blacksburg in 1945, she became an active member of Southside Garden Club, which was an outgrowth of the Garden Committee in the Senior Woman's Club of Blacksburg. In addition to being president of the Southside Garden Club, she was president of the Blacksburg Council of Garden Clubs, which consisted of the nationally accredited garden clubs in Blacksburg. Louise was honored with a State Life Membership and also a National Council Life Membership., For many years she held the chairmanship of several committees on the district level, and almost as long on the state level. After completing several required courses of the Accredited Flower Show Schools, growing and exhibiting horticulture, making and exhibiting floral designs, and helping judge flower shows throughout Virginia, she felt proud to have had the opportunity to participate in the judging of the International Flower Show held in Miami Beach, Fla., and also in flower shows presented by the National Council Clubs in the Washington, D.C., area. Louise and her husband were avid dahlia enthusiasts, and grew many gorgeous varieties, which earned many blue ribbons in area shows. She felt quite honored that she had assisted in decorating the Virginia Tech President's home and the University Club on several occasions for annual events., Louise was proud to have been a member of Blacksburg United Methodist Church since coming to Blacksburg in 1938, and had been presented a Life Membership pin in the United Methodist Women Society., The family would like to offer a special thanks to the Kroontje Health Care Center, the Cove, Southern Care Hospice, and McCoy Funeral Home for the compassionate care and consideration they have given to us and to Mother. SMITH, Langley Hugh, 79, of Richmond, formerly of Warsaw, Va., went to be with the Lord December 11, 2008. He is survived by his brothers, Willard Smith of Warsaw, Ralph Smith and his wife, Louise of Richmond; sisters, Eleanor Walls, Doris Macklin, Ruth Mazmanian, Evangeline Irvin and her husband, Joe, all of Richmond; a sister-in-law, Mahalie Smith, of Warsaw; along with a host of nieces, nephews and many treasured friends. Langley served his country in the United States Air Force. He later retired from Overnight Transportation in 1993. Langley was a dedicated servant of Christ as a Deacon of Grove Avenue Baptist Church and Battery Park Church of Christ. She is survived by sons, G. Michael Smith and his wife, Nichole, and Perry Roberson; a daughter, Kimberly Smith; four grandchildren, Jennifer Smith and her partner, Antonio Carter, Pamela Roberson, Stevi Jackson and Michael Gene Smith; three great-grandchildren, Evonna Smith, Jazmyne Taylor and Nathanyal Carter; one brother, Ronald Gaines and wife, Carla; one devoted cousin, Betty Reid; a lifelong friend, Martha Munn; and Shannon Nixon, who to her was like a son. STEELE, Marvin Andrew, 80, of Richmond, Virginia, died December 11, 2008. Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Parker Steele; his parents, Lee Benjamin and Anna Steele; and his sister, Nancy Lee Holland. He is survived by his sisters, Grace Ballestriere of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Christine Seton of Orlando, Florida; his son, Benjamin Lee Steele; his daughter, Nancy Steele Carlson; his stepchildren, Frances Rowe Olsen and John Arthur Rowe; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Marvin was a graduate of Drexel Institute of Technology with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. He was a Plant Superintendent with The General Crushed Stone Company, where he retired after 30 years of service. Marvin was active in the Boy Scouts for many years and served as a Scout Master in Ashland, Va. His interests included gardening and model trains. He was a member of the Rappahannock Model Railroad Club of Fredericksburg and the Kiwanis Club of Ashland. Marvin served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, both in the United States and Japan. The family will receive friends at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Mr. Alexander Stringfield, 66, departed this life Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at the Waverly Healthcare Center. He was born Dec. 15, 1941 to the late Joseph Stringfield Sr. and Ellen Brown Stringfield. Alexander was educated in the Surry County Public School System. He was employed at the College of William & Mary and the Wakefield Peanut Company before retiring early due to failing health. He joined Oak Grove Baptist Church at an early age and later became a member of the Wakefield Christian Outreach Center. Alexander was preceded in death by four brothers, Stanley, Joseph Jr., Robert Lee, and George W.; and one sister, Essie Mae. He leaves to cherish his memory, one sister, Catherine Stringfield Taylor of Chesterfield; one sister-in-law, Gladys Stringfield of Wakefield; a devoted friend, Laverne Perry of Waverly; one daughter, Cassandra Gray of New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Alexander will be sorely missed. A funeral service will be at noon, Tuesday, Dec. 16, at The Wakefield Christian Outreach Center, with the Rev. Charles Cypress, officiating.
