Mary E. Beckwith NORFOLK - Mary E. "May" Beckwith of the 600 block of Gladstone St., died Dec. 2, 2008 in Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center. She was born in Waynes County, North Carolina, and was a member of Faith Temple COGIC in Norfolk. She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Humphrey and Christine Jones (Albert Sr.), both of Norfolk; one son, Reginald Humphrey of Norfolk; two sisters, Annie Humphrey of Kinston, N.C., and May Eggleston of Bethlehem, Pa.; one brother, James Earl of Baltimore; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Isaac Humphrey and Josephine Humphrey and her two brothers, Alton Humphrey and Floyd Humphrey. Dec 5, 2008 The funeral for Bernie Woodrow Owens, 64, of Ararat, who died Dec. 1, 2008, was held Wednesday at Unity Church with Pastors Buford Jessup and Wayne Moore officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Bubba Rorrer, Wayne Pruitt, Roscoe Hooker, Billy Hooker, Brad Collins, Roland Owens, Lonnie Stowe and Neil Smith. BOHANNON, Rachel W., of Mechanicsville, passed away on December 5, 2008 at the age of 78. Mrs. Bohannon was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, John M. Bohannon, in 1987. She is survived by her five children and their spouses, Susan, Marty Ray (Kim), Jeanne Pitt (Bubba), Scott (Lynn) and Michelle (Brian). All grew up in Mechanicsville and graduated from Lee-Davis High School. She also was "Granny" to her nine grandchildren, Cole, Tyler, Rebecca, Austin, Loren, Parker, Heath, Chase and Wyatt. She is also survived by dear friends, Emily and Buddy Graham, David and Sharon Edmondson; and many other special friends. She was employed by the Commissioner of Accounts for the Circuit Court of the City of Richmond for 45 years and retired at the age of 75. The family will receive friends Saturday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. Interment in Signal Hill Memorial Park. Dot traveled extensively as the wife of a career U.S. Navy veteran and was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association. Rose Wilkinson Costain, died Thursday, December 4, 2008. She was born on March 14, 1923, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of the late James Gordon Wilkinson and Rose Stam Wilkinson. She married John Kendall Costain, in Salt Lake City, November 22, 1956, Thanksgiving Day. She completed two years of college at the University of Utah and Virginia Tech. She worked as an administrative assistant in the Department of Surgery at the University of Utah, and after moving to Virginia, in the Department of Statistics at Virginia Tech from 1975 through 1992, when she retired., "My husband, family and extended family have been my dearest blessings.", She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Alice Wilkinson Tustison and Hope Wilkinson; brother, J. Gordon Wilkinson; and niece, Susan Tustison Mudrock, all of Salt Lake City, Utah., She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dr. John Kendall Costain, professor emeritus of geophysics at Virginia Tech; a daughter, Caroline Rose Costain Muller, of Pulaski; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Gordon Costain and Barbara McGrath Costain, of Richmond, and James Earle Costain, of Blacksburg; three grandsons, Sgt. Survivors include four children, Larry Dwayne Cundiff and wife, Billie, of Ashland, Va., Donald Wade Cundiff of Richmond, Va., Thomas Daniel Cundiff and wife, Susan, of Springfield, Va., Donna Cundiff Montgomery and husband, Ralph, of Fayetteville, N.C.; a brother, Howard Eames of Martinsville, Va.; a sister, Imogene Bowles of Martinsville, Va.; eight grandchildren, Michelle, Dustin, Christopher, Dale and Erin Cundiff, Katherine, Nathan and Nicholas Montgomery. Mom was always the glue that held the family together with love. CURTIS, Gregory S., 57, was suddenly called home to be with our Heavenly father on December 4, 2008. He was born June 3, 1951 in Hempstead, N.Y., to Robert and Rose Curtis. Greg served in the U.S. Air Force in the late 1970s and then worked in the insurance industry in Wilkesboro, N.C. and the Richmond area. Greg was very active in the Chesterfield Youth Softball Association (CYSA) as a manager and a coach for over 30 years and was the current President of the Association. He was a proud veteran, a true American patriot and a die-hard New York Yankees fan. Greg's huge heart and generosity were evident in everything he did. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Angela, of Chesterfield, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Kevin Scholl of Mechanicsville; daughters, Tiffany and Kimberly Curtis and Samantha and Amanda Ray; and his loyal pets, Cuddles and Missy, all of Chesterfield. He is also survived by his mother, Rose Curtis of Midlothian; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert, Glen, Karla and Janice Curtis; 13 nieces and nephews; longtime friend, Caroline Curtis; as well as many other friends and colleagues. He was taken from us much too soon and will remain in our hearts and minds forever. A funeral service will be held Monday, December 8 at 11 a.m., at Woody Funeral Home, Huguenot Chapel, with interment following at Dale Memorial Park. Leslie R. Ellis SUFFOLK - Leslie Ray Ellis, 73, passed away Dec. 5, 2008, at Nansemond Point. A native of Roduco, N.C., he was the son of the late Hulda Robertson and Joseph Elliott Ellis. He was predeceased by his wife, Selma Vann Stanley Ellis and 10 brothers and sisters. Ray retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard from shops 26 and 17 as a nuclear welder Oct. 31, 2008, having given 34 years 10 months and one day. Prior to working at the shipyard, he worked at Suffolk Iron Works for 17 years and seven years at Kincaid & Spivey Co. Ray was an Army veteran and served during the Korean conflict. Ray was a multi champion in Duck Pin Bowling, was an avid salt and fresh water fisherman. He loved a good Turkey Shoot and enjoyed western movies and books. Ray loved to work. Ray is survived by his daughters, Faye Harrell and husband Sherwood of Suffolk, Linda Writtenberry and husband Gerald of Suffolk, Lisa Helms and husband Tom "Marty" of Monroe, N.C.; grandchildren, Kristie W. Cunningham and husband Jeremy, Tara W. Moore and husband Art, Hollie W. Will and husband Andy, Tyler V. Helms, Collin Ray Helms and Autumn B. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, the former Anna Mae Pate of Glen Allen; son, Robert Bland Eppes III of Glen Allen; three daughters, Elizabeth Eppes Merkle of Glen Allen, Suzanne Eppes Hoffacker of Southhampton, Pa. and Catherine Eppes Bernard of Waikoloa, Hawaii; two granddaughters, Melissa Anne Merkle and Sarah Elizabeth Merkle of Glen Allen; grandson, Theodore Charette and great-granddaughter, Ellen Charette, both of Milwaukee, Wis. Mr. Eppes was a retired engineer from the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad and a great lover of baseball. He was a resident of Glen Allen for 54 years and a member of Glen Allen Baptist Church for over 40 years. Essie C. Foskey NORFOLK - Essie C. Foskey, 82, departed for her heavenly home Dec. 2, 2008. Essie was born Nov. 29, 1926, in Martin County, North Carolina. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, James L. Foskey and a son, Linwood E. Foskey. She was the daughter of the late Yancy and Addie Lou Council. She is survived by her son, Lonzie "LJ" Foskey of Jacksonville, N.C., (Annette); two daughters, Deloris A. Stern of France and Receater Foskey Harris of Virginia Beach (Patrick); three brothers, Pete and Walter Council of New Haven, Conn., and Clayton Council of Greenville, N.C.; and a sister, Louise Moore of New Haven. Nine other siblings predeceased her. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Gracie Crandle; and a host of other relatives and friends. Essie was a faithful member of First Calvary Baptist Church for 19 years where she was an active member of Usher Board No. 1. She was a great philanthropist, always giving of her time and resources, visiting the sick and shut-in and imparting hope into many lives. Her sense of humor brought joy and laughter to all. FRIED, Jane Correll, of Glen Allen, passed away Thursday, December 4, 2008 after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Herbert Fried who passed away in 1976 and is survived by her longtime companion, Robert C. "Bob" Wendt; her son, Herb Fried; daughter-in-law, Jan Fried; beloved granddaughter, Katie Fried; and many relatives in North Carolina. She was a member of Temple Beth Ahabah and the Beth Ahabah Sisterhood, past president of the National Counsel of Jewish Women, Richmond Section and gave many hours of volunteer service to various charities. She was a member of Alocoholics Anonymous for 27 years. The family will receive friends at Bliley's - Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. . He loved to play darts and was an avid Braves fan, hardly ever missing a game, and was also a member of the FRA. Donald was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 35 years, Virginia B. Galloway. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother who will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Hannah Elizabeth Roseberry George, 15, of Roanoke, Va., and formerly of Huntington, W.Va., was embraced in the arms of her Savior on Wednesday, December 3, 2008. Born on October 9, 1993, Hannah is the daughter of the late Jeffrey Edward George and Teresa Kimbler George. Hannah was predeceased by her grandparents, the late Curtis and Goldie Kimbler and Frances and Edward George. Other survivors include two aunts, Bonnie and Randy Loftis, Luana and Bill Collier; and an uncle, Curtis Kimbler; as well as great-aunts, Kathleen Farmer, Rosalie George, Lillian Nieves, Helen Polston, Linda Sakakini, and Arleta Tuckwiller; special cousins include, Angela and Scott Hovermale, Brenden, Dylan and Peyton Hovermale, Melisa and David Pouleris and Ethan Pouleris. She cherished her special times with the extended George family, especially during the holidays. Hannah also leaves behind her adopted grandparents, Nelson and Margaret Worsham and Carolyn Williams and the late Bill Williams. Hannah's horses, Katje and Colin, and her beloved dogs will miss her terribly., An accomplished equestrienne, Hannah earned awards too numerous to mention in eventing, which included dressage, cross country, and stadium jumping. Her love of riding began in Harbor Springs, Mich., where she spent many wonderful family summers. She began riding lessons at Pratt Valley Equestrian Center in Chesapeake, Ohio, participating in multiple competitions. In the summer of 2007, Hannah enjoyed riding at Team CEO Eventing in Lexington, Ky. Most recently, she enjoyed riding at Sunrise Stables in Lexington, Va., Academically, Hannah excelled, earning Honor Roll recognition for repeated quarters. Her diligence in organization and class preparation is credited to the discipline taught her by many excellent teachers. She was also a member of the Faith Christian School Choir, Drama Team and Ministerium Service Club. Faculty reports consistently describe Hannah as a hard worker who was eager to please, with a pure, gentle spirit and perpetually sweet disposition. Her fellow classmates often remarked that her smile was at the ready to cheer up anyone having a bad day. In fact, her joyful smile brightened every classroom she entered, as she absolutely glowed with the love of Christ., Services will be held at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church 11 a.m. on Monday, December 8, 2008 with Dr. Allen Reasons officiating. Jeffrey Edward George, M.D., 49, of Roanoke, Va., and formerly of Huntington, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, near Roanoke. He was born on December 20, 1958, son of the late Edward and Frances Shaw George. Dr. George is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Teresa Kimbler George. He was graduated from Duke University in 1980 and West Virginia University Medical School in 1984. He completed his general surgery residency at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in 1989 and his cardiothoracic surgery residency at the University of Louisville in 1991., His honors include valedictorian of Huntington High School and, later, recipient of the Lange Outstanding Senior Medical Student Award at WVU. He received the Baird Memorial Surgical Research award many times during his general surgery training. Furthermore, he was designated as one of the "Best Doctors in America" six separate times. He was also chairman of the Hospitality House, now the Jeffrey E. George Comfort House; director of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff at St. Mary's Medical Center; Chairman of St. Mary's Medical Center Foundation; and Professor and Chief, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine., Survivors include two aunts, Linda Sakakini and Rosalie George; a cousin, Joy and Jim Booten; and many other special cousins. He also leaves behind two beloved dogs., Dr. George will forever be remembered as a man who respected all people and was generous beyond compare. Beyond all his medical expertise and attention to his patients, his family always knew they were his first love. Dr. George was also an avid tennis player. Dec 5, 2008 Gertie Rodgers Cates, 95, of Patrick Springs, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. She was born in Patrick County on May 17, 1913, to Jacob and Augusta Gray Rodgers. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Cates; seven brothers; and two sisters. She was a member of New Beginnings Baptist Church. Surviving are her son, Charles Rodgers of Patrick Springs; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. HADEN, Sally Martin, 85, of Elkton, Va., died Thursday, December 4, 2008 in Standardsville. Mrs. Haden was born June 19, 1923, in Kents Store (Fluvanna County) and was the daughter of the late Nathaniel P. and Mae Price Martin. Sally was a graduate of Fluvanna High School and James Madison University (formerly Madison College). She was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church and taught school for many years for Henry Clay High School in Ashland, and for Elkton High School in Elkton. From 1955 to 1980, she and her husband, Tim, owned and operated Haden's Furniture in Elkton. She enjoyed doing genealogy work and also real estate investments and improvements. On October 9, 1948, she married her husband of 60 years, Timothy Wash Haden, who preceded her in death on November 5, 2008. Survivors include four children, Tim Haden Jr. of Haymarket, Charles Haden of Hampton, David Haden of Virginia Beach, and Jeanne H. Ford of Elkton; and seven grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, December 7, 2008 at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton, with Dr. Roger Mace officiating. On Wednesday, December 3, 2008, our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, and Friend, Eva Mae Taylor (Sallie) Harris, of Buchanan, Va., left this earthly home to enter into her Heavenly Home to rejoin all the loving family and friends who have gone on before her. On May 20, 1932, Eva Mae "Sallie" Taylor, was born to the late Leo Taylor and Della Campbell Taylor in Buchanan, Va. She was the second born child, whose sister, Betty Taylor Welch; and two brothers, Wesley "Nubbin" Taylor, and Thomas "John Henry" Taylor (wife, Becky), survive her. Sallie was married on December 28, 1950, to Harry Bolen Harris Jr., who died on February 14, 1988. Daddy and Mama operated a local grocery store in Buchanan for over 20 years. Mama also worked at the Buchanan Elementary School for 20 + years., She and Daddy worked at the Buchanan Theatre most weekends for many years. Mama was a faithful member of the Buchanan Baptist Church for over 60 years. She especially served the children of the church as the Beginner Sunday School Class teacher for 50+ years, beginning with Mrs. Mabel Brubaker and continuing with the children's class until her death. Mama was a member of the Hazel Moon Circle, and the Mt. Joy Rebekah Lodge, serving in many officer positions throughout the years. She was also a member of the Buchanan Town Improvement Society and the Red Hat Society. Mama felt great joy in volunteering with the local Meals on Wheels program., Survivors include her children, Vicki and Jim Eubank, and Nicki and Cindy Harris; grandson and spouse, James Edward and Crystal Eubank; and the most special lights of her life her great-grandchildren, Caleb and Olivia. There are also many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law; and other family and friends. Also, preceding her in death this past year, was her dear friend, Glenna Berry., to others. Every child that was ever in her Sunday School Class, or came through her cafeteria line at school was a very special child in Mama's heart, and each was a blessing to her in every way. HAYES, Barrett "Barry" Joseph, 42, of Henrico, Virginia. The gates of heaven opened and Barry took the Lord's Hand on Thursday, December 4, 2008. He loved his family, his fiancee, and her daughter, as well as his many loyal friends. He also loved fishing, music, the Dallas Cowboys, and a good party. Barry was a 21-and-a-half-year heart transplant survivor and courageously fought the good fight. He was a kind and gentle man who never met a stranger. He could make anyone laugh during the worst of times, even in his own. He was a longtime employee of Lippy's Auto Service. He will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his father, James L. Hayes; brother, J. Hugh White Huff Jr., fondly referred to as H.W., 82, of Pulaski, died Thursday afternoon, December 4, 2008, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born on January 5, 1926, in Bristol, and was grandson of the late George Cannady and Blanch Vinyard Huff, Walton Willis and Lena Davis Lockett; son of the late Hugh White Huff Sr. and Kathryn Lockett Huff. The life he lived was a reflection of his love and devotion to his family, community and country. H.W. served in the United States Army, 376th Airborne 82NO Division, and was a paratrooper in Europe during World War II. Many would say he was a philanthropist, sharing his blessings with many causes. He was Founder and General Partner of the Downtown East Development and Chairman of the Board of Bond Cote of Virginia. H.W. was President of Huff Coal and Oil Company and Chairman of the Board of Huff Petroleum, in Pulaski. He served on the Board of Pulaski, Bristol, and Roanoke Banks of Virginia. He served as the Chairman of Finance, Trustee, and Board of Stewards of the First United Methodist Church, Pulaski, and served as Chairman of the Pulaski Public Service Authority. In addition, H.W. served on the board of the New River Airport Commission. He was a Charter and Former Member of the Pulaski Jaycees, Coffee and Elks Club. H.W. was a Harris Fellow and continuous oldest Member of Pulaski Rotary Club and the Pulaski American Legion. He served on the Pulaski Merchants Council, and was a member of the Pulaski Science Club. In addition, he served on the Board of Trustees of the New River Community College Foundation and established the Ann F. Huff Book Fund which will provide books for students for generations to come. H.W. was awarded Business Executive of the Year by the Pulaski Chamber of Commerce (1983), and has received New River Community College's highest award, the Friendship Award., H.W. is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ann Foster Huff, of 61 years; son, Hugh White Huff III and his wife, Sheryl Richardson Huff, of Salem; and daughter, Sarah Ann Huff, of Columbus, North Carolina; granddaughters, Lindsay Huff Fedok and her husband, Jason, of Alexandria, Lauren Huff Bullen and her husband, Charles, of Roanoke; and grandson, Hugh White Huff IV (Chip), of Roanoke; sister, Sara Huff Tuck and her husband, Dr. Kenneth Tuck, of Roanoke; brother, Walton Lockett Huff and wife, Mary Churchill Huff, of Houston, Texas; great-grandson, Ryan Edward Fedok, of Alexandria; and sister-in-law, Joy Foster, of Christiansburg. Fred was born in Teaneck, N.J., and lived in New Jersey and New York, but spent most of his adult life in Virginia Beach. He resided at Pacific South Condominiums in Virginia Beach. Fred and Mary owned and operated the Venice Italian Restaurant in Virginia Beach and Norfolk for 54 years. Freddy was a member and contributor to Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Virginia. Survivors include two daughters, Carol Hawkins and husband Tom of Virginia Beach and Catherine Loiercio and dearest friend Mary McLemore of Knots Island, N.C.; his sister, Angelina Loiercio and husband Tony of Norfolk; sisters-in-law, Josephine Loiercio of Norfolk and Jean Smith of Syracuse, N.Y. Fred was an exceptional husband, father and grandfather and received immense pleasure from his three grandchildren, Mary Rooney and husband Mike of Odenton, Md., Matthew Foreman and wife Rachel of Virginia Beach and Zachary Hawkins and wife Maris of Virginia Beach. MOORE, Dr. Robert Patrick, 87, of Richmond, died December 2, 2008 after a brief illness. He was a son of the late Dr. Ray Atkinson Moore and Pauline Smith Moore. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth Reynolds Moore; his daughter, Ellen M. Walk and her husband, John; son, Robert P. Moore Jr. and his wife, Marilyn; grandchildren, Sarah P. Walk, John R. Walk Jr., Robert A. Moore, and Michael P. Moore; his brothers Dr. John A. Moore and William A. Moore; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Ray A. Moore Jr. Born in Charlotte County Va., he grew up in Hampden-Sydney Virginia, where his father served as college physician for Hampden-Sydney College and Longwood College, in addition to a general practice in Farmville. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1943, and the Medical College of Virginia in 1946, subsequently serving his internship at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. He served active duty in the United States Navy from 1947 to 1950. After a one-year residency in Pathology at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in Charlotte N.C., he completed a two-year residency in Internal Medicine at the McGuire VA Hospital in Richmond, Va. After four years of private practice of Internal Medicine in Spartanburg S.C., he returned to Richmond to practice at Ennion G. Williams Hospital. Dedicated to his patients and students, he taught at MCV, and later practiced and taught at the McGuire VA Hospital. He retired in 1986. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Richmond, and previously a member of River Road Presbyterian Church, where he was a Ruling Elder. The family will receive friends at 10806 Whitaker Woods Rd. on Friday, December 5, from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, December 6, at 2:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church, with a reception to follow at the church. Virginia partnered with her husband Dick by directing the administrative side of their business, Town and Country Realty in Petersburg, Va., from 1949 to September of 2005. Virginia served the community for many years as a volunteer with the Twigs at the Southside Regional Medical Center, delivering flowers to patients. She was Treasurer of the Burlington Garden Club for many years and, as a member, notorious for winning "best specimen" with her flowers. Her ability as a gardener was well-known and she shared the secrets of gardening as well as her specimens with family and friends. She was a faithful friend to the birds who were attracted to her garden. Virginia was a devoted mother to her children and grandchildren and has been inspirational both in character and competence. Among the gifts Virginia leaves to family by way of example are her generosity, her kindness, her selflessness and her commitment to enrich the lives of others. She opened the door to the joys of travel to her children and grandchildren. Virginia was skilled at many crafts, including cooking, rug braiding, quilting, embroidery and knitting. Virginia and her family are forever appreciative to her dedicated caregivers over the past few years, Christine Younger and Patricia Smith. Miss Norwood was born in Oxford, N.C., and moved with her family to Virginia in 1917. She graduated from John Marshall High School and worked in the insurance industry throughout her professional career, retiring as an officer of the First Commonwealth Life Insurance Company of Richmond. She was an active member of Northminster Baptist Church for many years, serving as a teacher and director of the Youth Department, as a Deacon, and member of the finance committee. In her church work, she had a real ability to make a positive difference in the lives of young people. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Nathaniel and Hattie Lee Wilson Norwood; her sisters, Isabelle Norwood Adams, Josephine Norwood and Inez Norwood Fridley; and brothers, William, Henry, Robert, and James Norwood. She is survived by her nieces, Inez Fridley, Sandra Fridley, Joanne Fridley, Isabelle Thierfeldt and Jeanette Wise; and great-nieces and nephews. Mr. Charles "Barney" McKinley Poole of Ettrick went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. He was born Sept. 20, 1930, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia to the late Charlie Poole and Eugenia Fountain Poole. He accepted Christ at an early age at First Union Baptist Church, Richmond under the guidance of his grandfather, the Rev. John E. Fountain. Upon moving to Petersburg he joined Zion Baptist Church, under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Andrew J. White Sr. He was educated in Richmond Public Schools and graduated from Armstrong High School in 1948. Charles received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1967 and a Master of education in Administration and Supervision in 1976 from Virginia State University. He was an excellent athlete and an accomplished football and basketball player. Barney served valiantly in the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of 1st lieutenant. After faithful service he retired from the Petersburg City School System. Barney was also a member of various civic, community and Church organizations, among them Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, Kiwanis Club, and the Zion Baptist Church where he served on the Finance Committee and volunteered to feed the hungry. Barney was also a civil rights activist. He was a devoted husband, father, son and brother and was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Elizabeth Francis Stills Poole, and son, Brian Jeffrey Poole. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Robinson; and her brothers, Earl, Richard, Williams, Jimmie and Miles Dixon. Her devotion and love will be forever cherished by her children, Rev. Benjamin Robinson, Ruby J. McAlpine and Doris A. Brown; her grandchildren, Jefferson R. McAlpine Jr. and Walter R. Brown (Tisha); her great-grandson, Phoenix R. Brown; her son-in-law, Willie W. Brown; her nieces, nephews, a host of other loving relatives and many caring friends. She supported her husband's military career, serving as president of the Navy Dental Wives organization in Pensacola, Honolulu, Washington, D.C., and Norfolk. She actively supported other's recovery as the recovery advocate of the Episcopal Church, Diocese of Southern Virginia, co-authoring the Recovery Manual for the region. The Episcopal church was the center of Arlene's volunteerism throughout her life. The past 25 years, Arlene was an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, serving on the Altar Guild, Martha's Ministry, Cursillo, the Vestry and as a pastoral caregiver. In addition, she delivered Meals on Wheels and sponsored families in need. In death, she continues to give to others by donating her body to the Eastern Virginia Medical School for research and teaching. THALHIMER, Nancy P., 75, of Richmond, Va., passed away peacefully at home December 4, 2008, surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Alice Passloff; and her brother, Richard Passloff of Richmond. Nancy is survived by her husband of 55 years, Morton G. Thalhimer Jr.; a son, Morton G. Thalhimer III and his wife, Patti, of Richmond; a daughter, Leigh T. Linnell and her husband, Bob, of Portland, Ore.; and a son, Richard L. Thalhimer and his wife, Amy, of Richmond. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Barbara Passloff of White Plains, N.Y.; and a niece, Lynn Drucker of Laurel, Md. Additional survivors include six grandchildren, Sarah and David Thalhimer of Richmond, Evan and Alexandra Thalhimer of Richmond, Austin and Daniel Linnell of Portland, Ore.; and a cousin, Lee Wolff and his wife, Pamela, of Cleveland, Ohio. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Nancy was an avid outdoor person, enjoying tennis and golf over the greater portion of her life. She further enjoyed skiing for 50 years with her three children, their spouses and grandchildren. Nancy was involved with many organizations and cared greatly about the well being of our community, particularly for our health care institutions. She served tirelessly for 20 years on two separate boards of Sheltering Arms Hospital. She worked diligently and participated in the change from a conventional hospital to a top-rated rehabilitation facility. Nancy was loved and admired not only by her family, but also by a large circle of Richmond friends. She had numerous friendships throughout the country acquired through her 17 years at the Harbour Ridge Club in Stuart, Fla. She will be missed, but her spirit and joyful outlook lives on through her children, grandchildren and an abundance of friends. The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 6, 2008, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond. Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held at Congregation Beth Ahabah, 1111 W.
