James Jackson Anderson, 88, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 at his home in Chilhowie. He was a deacon for over 60 years, Sunday school teacher, choir director and a trustee at Macedonia Baptist Church. He was also a recipient of the Silver Star in World War II. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, James Fielden Anderson and Cora McVey Anderson, three children, twin daughter and Lisa Kay Anderson. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Beatrice Pennington Anderson; one son, Mike Anderson and wife, Ruth; four daughters, Judy Moore and husband, Weets, Peggy Burchett and husband, Neal, Susan Mason and husband, Bill, and Rita Caudill and husband, Joe; grandchildren, Angie Robinson and husband, Joe, Jamie McClure and husband, Kevin, Rusty Anderson and wife, Amber, Brandon Moore and fiancé, Erin Hamblin, Brad Caudill, Ethan Mason, Jordon Caudill, and Austin Mason; two step-grandsons, Jeff Moore and wife, Camille, and Jody Caudill and wife, Alisha; seven great-grandchildren, Megan Robinson, Xavier Caudill, Ryan Moore, Alex Robinson, Landon McClure, Hunter Robinson, Reece Caudill; one brother, Andrew Carson Anderson, and wife, Anna James; nephews, Jerry and Jimmy Anderson and families; nieces, Phyllis Blevins and Gaile Owens and families; and a host of church friends and neighbors. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 7, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Blevins and the Rev. Dennis Eller officiating. Doris Evelyn Cannon Atwell, 68, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at her home. She was born in Virginia to the late Clyde and Francis Cannon. She was retired from Southwestern Virginia State Hospital. Samuel D. Barnes CHESAPEAKE - Samuel Davide Barnes, 78, of the 1400 block of Wingfield Ave., died Dec. 13, 2008, in his home. He was born in Littleton, N.C., and was the son of the late Arthur L. Barnes and Hattie Lloyd Barnes. Samuel a truck driver for Old Dominion Freight Line and had served in the National Guard. Samuel is survived by his wife, Virginia L. Harry F. Barrett, age 74, of Austin, Texas, passed away at his home on Fri., Nov. 14, 2008. He was born Aug. 1, 1934 in Pine Creek, Va., to Frank and Theodosia (Wells) Barrett. Harry attended Russell County public school and then graduated from Richlands High School in 1951. Shortly after graduation, he entered the United States Air Force. He married Pamela Pressman 51 years ago in Margate Kent, England, while serving at Manston AFB. Harry served in the Korean Conflict, the Cuban Missile Crisis and Viet Nam War. He retired as a Chief Master Sergeant and helped to establish the Austin Retired Chiefs Society. He lived in Austin for 31 years. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for several Austin firms. His final retirement was due to ill health 4 1/2 years ago. During the past four years, Harry was able to travel back to Virginia for family and class reunions. Harry loved his birthplace and his many friends and family here. He was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and attended all home games with his son Jon. Harry welcomed all children into his home. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors in his garden. Those left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Pamela of Austin; daughter, Giselle Barrett Price and husband Leonard (Fritz) of Austin; daughter, Melissa Barrett Kreer of Austin; and son, Jon F. Kevin Lee BeVille, 27, died after a motor vehicle accident on Saturday, November 29, 2008. BLANCHARD, Lynn Ellen, 48, wife of Kenneth D. Blanchard, and a resident of Melfa, Va., passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, Va. Born on October 19, 1960 at the Hahn Air Force Base in Germany, and raised as an "Air Force Child" mostly overseas, she was the daughter of Muriel J. Bainbridge of Halifax, Va., and the late Richard L. Fleckenstine. Lynn was a bookkeeper for H.W. Drummond, Inc., in Belle Haven, Va., and was a former receptionist for the Accomack County Social Services. She greatly enjoyed raising her children, keeping in touch with her friends on the internet, and gardening. Lynn enjoyed dealing with the public and her work, having just worked the day before she passed away. Other than her husband and mother, survivors include two children, Ellen Marie Cook and Martin Kenneth Blanchard, both of the home; a sister, Sue Ann Bailey of Halifax; two nephews, Christopher Allen Bailey and Matthew Owen Bailey; her father-in-law, Joseph Blanchard of Melfa; a special friend, Betty Smith of Melfa; and an uncle, Lawrence C. BRIZENDINE, Carroll E. "Brizy" Sr., 78, of Richmond, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2008. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Gaynelle Brizendine; four daughters and their spouses, Diane Brizendine, Carol and Vince Hankley, Bobbi and Derek Chisholm, and Joan Wash; his son, Carroll E. "Bubba" Brizendine Jr. and his wife, Nancy; one sister, Beulah Graham; 12 grandchildren, Staci, Traci, Hunter, Christine, Heather, Holly, Brooke, Max, Alex, Jake, Gannon, and Patrick; and nine great-grandchildren. Brizy retired from Unisource as senior vice president after many years of service. After his retirement, he founded his family business Cebco Inc. in 1992. Bryce V and Suzanne Bryce Peterson; her parents and her 15 brothers and sisters. Helen was born in Reidsville, N.C., on June 23, 1914, the daughter of Dr. Joseph H. and Ida Lee Thacker. She was a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing. She married Dr. William F. Bryce IV, and devoted herself to her family, home, church, and anyone in need. She volunteered at the Richmond Eye & Ear Hospital, was a Boy Scout Den Mother, was a member of the James River Women's Club, and was an active member of Westover Hills United Methodist Church. She was a blessing in this life, and always tried to help anyone she could. Her suppers to those in need were legendary. Mildred Ann Arnold Campbell, 79, died Dec. 5, 2008, after a long and difficult battle. The Lord was kind and gracious to her and her family by granting her a peaceful and painless death assisted by his angels at Valley Health Care and the Washington County Hospice Program. She died surrounded by the children who loved her more than life itself. She was loved dearly by all who ever came in contact with her, and whose days were brightened by her kind words and compliments. She was truly an angel of God sent here to make all our lives brighter and easier in this world. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Campbell, parents, James (Foddershock) and Alice (Shug) Arnold, and brothers, Garland (Pig) and Ernest (Lefty) Arnold. Although her life was filled with many accomplishments, her greatest accomplishment according to her, were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Filmore Hicks Cassell, 86, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 in Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville. He was born in Ceres to the late Davis Cassell and Pearl Cox Cassell and was a member of the Red Oak Union Church, the Ceres Ruritan Club and the Ceres Alumni Association. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having fought in the Battle of Normandy and was retired from the Brunswick Corp. with over 32 years of service. Donald Ray Crigger, age 61 of Princeton, W.Va., formerly of Tazewell, Va., died Thurs., Dec. 4, 2008 at his home. Born May 22, 1947 in McDowell County, W.Va., he was a son of Virginia Mae Owens Crigger of Tazewell, Va., and the late Clarence Leslie Crigger. He was employed by Massey Coal Company of Whitesville, W.Va., as an engineer. Prior to his employment with Massey Coal Company, he worked at Permac Corporation at Garden Creek, Va., and Consolation Coal Company at Horsepen, Va. Mr. Crigger was a former member of the Bluefield Elks Lodge and currently belonged to Princeton Moose Lodge. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Allan Crigger. Ronald Franklin (Frank) David, age 63 of Richlands, Va., passed away Tues., Dec. 2, 2008, at his home following a brief illness. Born June 13, 1945 in Richmond, Va., he was the son of Ola Clark David of Bristol, Va., and the late Glen Shaffer David. He was a 1963 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Va., and attended Virginia Commonwealth University. Frank was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a charter member of the Richlands Jaycees. Frank enjoyed working with youth and was involved in the Richlands Little League. He was an avid Blue Tornado fan and loved all sports. Frank was owner of All Star Sports. She was born in Charlottesville April 2, 1922, to the late William Jennings Gardner and Rosebud Johnson Gardner. She was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Alvin William Gardner and William Jennings Gardner Jr., both of Charlottesville. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Carroll E. "Mike" Harris; daughter, Carolyn Harris Herndon and her husband, Kenneth, of Richmond; granddaughter, Kandyce Herndon Klugh and her husband, Dr. Timothy Richard Klugh, of Greenville, N.C.; grandson, Kevin Neal Herndon of Alexandria; two great- granddaughters, Jordan Nicole ( three years old) and Taylor Rayne Klugh (7 months); her sister, Lottie Gardner Huckstep and her husband, Robert; nephew, Robert Keith and his wife, Beth, of Scottsville; niece, Dr. Susan Lynn Huckstep of Danville. Two nephews, Oakley Gardner and Bryant Gardner, both of Tennessee; and two nieces, Jill Houchens of Crozet and Janet Johnson of Charlottesville also survive Mrs. Harris. She and her family became Charter Members of Cherry Avenue Christian Church in January, 1955. Dorothy spent 26 years teaching Bible school. She loved her church and was an active member until her illness began. She was a graduate of Lane High School and worked at the Pencil Factory during the war. The last seven years of her life she resided at Heritage Hall Nursing Home where she received much love and care from the wonderful staff. Dec 15, 2008 Irene Conway Tuggle, 88, of 626 Susan Drive, Collinsville, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at her home. She was born on Nov. 18, 1920, in Patrick County to Cain Edward Conway and Lucy Gilbert Conway. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Gideon G. Huddle; three sisters, Amanda Sue Meece, Alverta "Vert" Haley and Evelyn "Eb" Long; and five brothers, Willie Conway, Bill Conway, Sank Conway, Jack Conway and Richard Conway. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Collinsville for more than 60 years. She had been employed by Globman's Department Store and Bassett-Walker Knitting Co., and she and retired from the Henry County Treasurer's Office with 14 years of service. Surviving are her husband, Elmer G. Tuggle Sr. of the home; two sons, Elmer Glenn Tuggle Jr. of Martinsville and Gideon C. Tuggle of Union Hall; a sister, Mary C. Thomas of Martinsville; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Collinsville with the Rev. Larry Cheek officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. Arthur McKinley (A.M.) Jackson, age 87 of Belfast, Va., passed away Wed., Dec. 3, 2008 at his home after a brief illness surrounded by his family and friends. Born at Daw Road in Tazewell County, Va., he was the son of the late Paris and Frances Whited Jackson. He was a retired home builder having built numerous homes in the Tazewell and Russell County areas. After his retirement, Arthur became a passionate farmer. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He attended Lebanon Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Jackson; one daughter, Jean Fields; one grandson, Michael Franklin Steffey; twin great grandsons, William Gregory Taylor and Jonathan Scott Taylor; two brothers, Rufus Jackson and Joe Jackson; and four sisters, Mary Ann Sargent, Hattie Shelton, Ethel Gillespie and Lucy Jackson. Fain and Daisy Hylton Fain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Hall Fain; a sister, Ethel Fain; and five brothers, Layman, Lowell, Leonard, Lyle and Lawrence Fain. He was retired after 35 years as a self-employed saw mill worker. He earned a Purple Heart while serving in the Army during World War II. Surviving are two daughters, Lavergne Morse of Sanford, Fla., and Debbie Wood of Laurel, Miss.; and a sister, Edna F. Hill of Claudville. He served in the United States Air Force and retired from Lockheed Martin. Bill resided in Sanger until having complications from Alzheimer's. He enjoyed flying. Survivors include one brother, David William Olinger Jr. of Fries; four sisters, Martha and David Delp of Marion, Mary Olinger of St. David, Ariz., Dixie and James Anderson of Glen Allen, Wilma and Ricky Murr of Madisonville, Tenn.; half sister, Peggy and Bill Frank Pratt of Atkins; former spouse, Patsy Olinger of Rich Valley; daughter, Kayla Roe and husband, Chris, of Seven Mile Ford; two step-grandsons, Micheal and Marcus; several nieces and nephews. She was born in Smyth County to the late William Sexton Cregger and Carrie Leonard Cregger and was preceded in death by her husband, George Milburn Owens, three sisters, Pearl Stover, Virginia Payne, Tressa McGhee, two brothers, Rudolph Cregger and Emmett Cregger, grandson, Jamie Owens, great-grandson, Jamison McAdams, and a very special daughter-in-law, Debbie Owens. She was a member of Furnace Hill Lutheran Church and Atonement Lutheran Church and was retired from the Atkins Elementary School with over 20 years of service. SCALES, Rev. Donald Francis Joseph, 80, of the Order of Saint Benedict (OSB), departed this life on December 12, 2008, at Mary, Mother of the Church Abbey in Richmond. He entered Belmont Abbey in North Carolina as a novice in 1948, and attended Belmont Abbey Seminary, being ordained a priest at Belmont Abbey on June 17, 1955. Fr. Donald then was sent to Benedictine High School in Richmond, where he worked for two years and again from 1960-61, before being sent back to Belmont Abbey. After many different assignments and obtaining a Masters' Degree in Guidance and Counseling, Fr. Donald returned to Richmond for the final time in 1980. He had since remained as a monk, serving at Benedictine as a religion teacher until his retirement and as a board member until his death. He served first as associate pastor and then as pastor of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Richmond until 1999. For many years and until his last days, he also served as the beloved Prior of his monastery. Never without a cigar or a smile, Fr. Donald baptized, served first communions, heard confessions, officiated weddings, offered last rites, and given the eulogies of countless numbers of Christians. Through his loving and comforting care, Fr. Donald provided years of spiritual guidance and friendship to anyone he met. Fr. Donald is survived by his monastic brothers; two sisters-in-law, Carol Scales and Martha Scales; his nieces and nephews, Sandra Scales-Siwek, Cecile Matty, Eric Scales, Maryanne "Sissy" Thomas, Hank Thomas, Randy Thomas, and Paul Thomas; and one cousin, William Colliton. His body will be received in St. Benedict Catholic Church, 300 N. Sheppard St., at 5 p.m. Tuesday, with visitation following until 7 p.m., when a Vigil Mass will be celebrated by The Most Rev. Francis X. DiLorenzo, Bishop of The Catholic Diocese of Richmond. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mary, Mother of the Church Abbey, with burial to follow in the Monastery Cemetery. TOST, Robert Walter "Bob," died Thursday, August 14, 2008 in Richmond. He was born September 11, 1947, in Miami, Fla., to William H. Tost and the late Betty Uher Tost. He was a retired house painter and an Army veteran. Besides his father of Belleview, Fla., Bob is survived by two brothers, Bill Tost and his wife, Linda, of Everglades City, Fla. and Tom Tost and his wife, Ann, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Dixie Tost of Belleview, Fla. and Samantha Heidt and her husband, Charles, of Billings, Mont.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
