David Bailey and his wife, Asha, of Glen Allen, and their children, Michael P. and Nicole E.; and mother and father-in-law, James and Jean Agee of Chesterfield. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, and sister. She was also owner of Agee Transcription. ANDERSON, Alvin (continued), brother, William Morris Anderson Jr.; sister, Anna Katharine Anderson; mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Philip S. Calvo Jr.; brother-in-law, Phillip S. BERGER, Richard Malcolm, died at his home on Sunday, November 30, 2008 after a brief illness. He was born at Lynch's Station, Va., August 6, 1930. His parents were Alonzo Smith Berger and Virginia Susan Short Berger Oliver; his brothers, Arthur William Berger and Vincent Addison Berger preceded him in death. He graduated from Gretna High School and served in the United States Navy twice, the second time during the Korean War. After the war, he studied chemistry at Lynchburg College and continued his education at the night school of Richmond Professional Institute (now part of Virginia Commonwealth University). Mr. Berger worked 47 happy, rewarding years at U.S. Filter Company/American Filtrona Corp. He began there as Quality Control Chemist. Later he became Manager of Research and Development and a Vice-President. He was creative and diligent. His ideas yielded numerous U.S. Patents. His favorite leisure activity was golf, often at Bermuda Golf Club in Chesterfield County, where he enjoyed many friendships. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Bozarth Berger; and their daughter, Susan Ann Berger Ryan. His unpretentious dignity, charm and wit will be sorely missed by them and by all his family and friends. God bless them. DAVID, Ronald Franklin "Frank", age 63 of Richlands, Virginia passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at his home following a brief illness. Born June 13, 1945 in Richmond, Virginia, he was the son of Ola Clark David of Bristol, Virginia and the late Glen Shaffer David. He was a 1963 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Virginia and attended Virginia Commonwealth University. Frank was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a charter member of the Richlands Jaycees. Frank enjoyed working with youth and was involved in the Richlands Little League. He was an avid Blue Tornado fan and loved all sports. Frank was owner of All Star Sports. In addition, to his mother he is survived by his wife of 35 years, Stephanie Smith David; two sons, Joshua Sutton David of Richlands and Christopher Franklin David and wife, Tawnee of Greenville, N.C.; one daughter, Alison Leigh David of Abingdon; grandson, Matt David of Greenville, N.C.; sister-in-law, Sharon Smith Hembree and husband, Tom of Abingdon; brother-in-law, Steve Smith and wife, Debbie of Abingdon; three nieces, Melanie Hembree, Katie Smith and Chloe Smith, all of Abingdon; and nephew, Drew Hembree and wife, Ashley of Abingdon. Marguerite P. Donlan WILLIAMSBURG - Marguerite P. Donlan, 90, died peacefully Dec. 1, 2008. She was born and raised in North Andover, Mass. Following graduation from Radcliffe College and prior to her marriage, she worked as a librarian at the Harvard Library. In 1942, she married Charles J. Donlan and moved to the Virginia Peninsula where she resided for 26 years, supporting her husband in his aerospace career and raising their two sons. She was involved in church and community activities and was a founding member of Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hampton. In 1968, she and her husband moved to Alexandria, Va., where they lived until 1998, moving then to Virginia Beach. She had been a resident of Williamsburg for four years, most recently at Patriot's Colony. She was predeceased by her brother, John J. Phelan Jr. and her beloved son, Richard M. Donlan, killed in the Vietnam War in 1969. She is survived by her husband, Charles J. Donlan; her sister, Isabelle M. Phelan; her son, Dr. Charles J. Donlan Jr. and his wife Mary, all of Williamsburg; three grandsons, Richard M. Donlan II and his wife Jessica of Singapore, Charles J. Donlan III of Midway, Utah, and Matthew Laine Donlan and his wife Danby of Charlotte, N.C.; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. DUNNAVANT, Bennett Purnell, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy C. Dunnavant and Nellie B. Dunnavant; and his brother, James A. Dunnavant. He is survived by his brother, Thomas A. Dunnavant and his wife, Patricia K. Dunnavant; sister-in-law, Barbara W. Dunnavant; two nieces, Julie A. Dunnavant and Cara Alexander; grandniece, Ainsley Elizabeth Alexander; and his faithful cat, Shadow. Bennett was born in Chesterfield County, Va., on May 27, 1952. Bennett was a lifelong resident of Chesterfield County except for the four years he served his country in the U.S. Navy as a medical corpsman. Bennett, known as "Ben" to his many close friends, had a love of music, movies, and a gift for writing beautiful poetry. Bennett was a Philip Morris retiree. As Bennett once wrote, "And, when the day arrives for us to part, when we move on as the wind, I will cherish those treasured times we had between us, my friends." HARMAN, Martha Shaffer. On December 3, 2008, God welcomed home Martha Shaffer Harman, just 16 days short of her 100th birthday. Born December 19, 1908 in Bowmansdale, Pa., she was the youngest of three. Martha was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Ralph Charles Harman. Together they were dedicated members of Berryman Methodist Church in South Richmond, and for many years, Martha volunteered at the Methodist Home for Ladies. At the time of her passing, she was a member of Westover Hills United Methodist Church. Martha "Nanny" is survived by her only child, Ralph Charles Harman Jr. and his wife, Jackquelyn Collier Harman; grandsons, Ralph Charles III "Chip" and wife, Linda, Alan Scott Harman and Noel Craig Harman and wife, Rebecca Toy; great-grandchildren, Steven Michael, Sarah Elizabeth, Thomas Wyeth and Bruce Craig. The Harman family is grateful to Mrs. Brenda Hatcher who, along with her extended family, was Martha's caregiver for 12 years, allowing her to live out her days in her home. She was a longtime resident of Radnor Township, Pennsylvania, and a member of Christ Church in Villanova. After her retirement as a customer service representative at Triangle Publications in Radnor, she moved to Richmond, Va., to be closer to her family, and where she volunteered at the Veterans Medical Center. MASSEY, Robert "Bobby" Joseph, of Enon, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2008. He was born in Glen Morris, West Virginia, the son of Mary Gladys Frazier Massey and the late Robert Massey. Mr. Massey retired in 1998 after 42 years of employment with Stone Container, now known as Smurfit-Stone. He was a member, Sunday school teacher, choir director and member of the men's church council at Enon Church of God. Mr. Massey was married for 49 years to his loving wife, Trilla Turner Massey. He is also survived by his children, Sherry Michalek and husband, Chris, Mark Massey and Jamie Shepard and husband, Warren; grandchildren, Emily, Meghan and Caleb Michalek, Chad and Hailey Massey, and Dylan and Dustyn Shepard; sister, Belinda Lane and husband, Ted; nieces, Kari and Jeanette Lane; and nephew, Tony Lane. Pauline S. McFarland NORFOLK - Pauline Frances Sexton McFarland, 84, died in her sleep on the morning of Nov. 26, 2008, in the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Jacksonville, Fla., from complications involving a heart condition. She was a native of Norfolk and the daughter of the late Lawrence and Marie Sexton. She was the loving wife of William T. McFarland who died in 1998. She was a graduate of Maury High School. ORENSKY, Carl R., 61, beloved father, brother, son and lovable old coot, of Newport News, Va., passed away on Friday, November 28, 2008. Born in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1947 of Abraham and Edith Orensky, he was the eldest brother of two. In the 30 years he worked at Eastern State Hospital, he served in nearly every unit of the hospital. During his tenure there, he touched thousands of hearts and changed innumerable lives. He is survived by sons, Ian and wife, Courtney, and Aaron and wife, Emily; his grandchildren, Kate, Jack and Hadyn; his mother, Edith; his brother, Frederick; and his partner, Claire Trimer. STEWART, Virginia Wright Lankford, 89, a retired Richmond Public Schools teacher, died Thursday, November 13, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband, James LaFayette Stewart. She is survived by her children, Victoria S. Bethel and husband, David, and James Robert Stewart Sr. and wife, Pattie; four grand-children, Jacqueline Bethel, Bobby and Michael Carey Stewart and Bridget Crusan; one niece, two nephews, five great-nieces, two great-nephews, one great-great-nephew and one great-great-niece. Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of George Albert Lankford Sr. and Alice Carey Lankford of Capron, Va. She received her B.S. degree from Madison College (now James Madison University) in 1940. She taught school in Kempsville, Holland and Suffolk, Va. before coming to Richmond in 1952, where she taught until she retired in 1979. Prior to June 2000, Mrs. Stewart was a dedicated member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and an elder for two terms. She was an active worker with the Presbyterian Women, where she served as Circle Leader for many years. Since June 2000, she has been a member of Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church and active with the Presbyterian Women there. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m Saturday, December 6, at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church. Burial services will be private. TOLLESON, Joyce Marie, lovingly known as Mammy, age 50, passed away suddenly on Monday, December 1, 2008 at St. Francis Medical Center. She is survived by her loving husband, Larry Tolleson; and daughter, Amanda Beth Morelli and her husband, Kristopher; and three grandchildren, Ryann Elizabeth, Madelyn Joy, and Hayden Thomas. She is also survived by her mother, Kathleen Weaver and husband, Walter; and her father, William Megginson and wife, Annie; other survivors include sisters, Judy Pollard and husband, Tom, Trudy Wood and husband, Alan, Monica Garrett and husband, Victor; her brothers, Jimmy Megginson and wife, Roxie Kenny Megginson, and Alan Megginson. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Kenny Megginson and wife, Cassie, Samantha Clark, her husband, Donnie, and their son, Brandon, Seth and Caleb Megginson, Aaron Pollard, and Alexia and Colby Garrett. Joyce was a registered nurse, who spent over a decade as an acute dialysis nurse and supervisor. She then found her calling using her skills, kindness, and empathy in hospice while working for Hospice Community Care. Everyone that knew Joyce truly respected her nursing idealism and professional abilities. Her example led daughter, Amanda, into becoming a registered nurse also. She will be remembered by all for her unfailing love and devotion to her family; her heartfelt care for the very ill and aged; and her unlimited concern for children and animals. A memorial service will be held at Bon Air Presbyterian Church, 9201 W. Huguenot Road, Richmond, Virginia at 11 a.m. on Saturday December 6, 2008. Lauren Traci Vergara CHESAPEAKE - Lauren Traci Vergara, a brilliant young woman, of the 1400 block of Monarch Reach, passed away at the youthful age of 16, Dec. 2, 2008. She was born in Agana, Guam and lived in Chesapeake for the past five years. She was the daughter of Noel and Gwen Velarde Vergara. Lauren previously attended Crestwood Elementary and Intermediate schools and currently attended Great Bridge High School where she was in the 11th grade. She was a performing member of the Great Bridge Marching Wildcats, the National Honor Society as well as many different academic clubs. Her smile filled every classroom with light because every teacher as well as many students loved her. She is survived by her parents of Chesapeake; her paternal grandparents, Alfredo and Julieta Vergara and maternal grandmother, Eufracia Velarde all of the Philippines; her older brother, Paolo; and her younger sister, Liezl; and many aunts and uncles. She was a beautiful daughter, a loving sister and a caring friend. The Rev. Father Romeo Jazmin will officiate at the funeral Mass Monday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. in Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Philippines. A Christian wake will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Chesapeake chapel of H.D. Following his retirement from the Navy, Lawrence graduated from the NAWCC School of Horology, and for the past eight years was in the watch and clock repair business, recently as owner of Norfolk Clock Repair. Lawrence was an avid student of American and naval history and loved to discuss these topics with family and friends. WHITLEY, Mary "Joy" Tippett, entered into eternal life on Friday, November 28, 2008, at her home, peacefully. She was not alone. Her number one supporter and source of positivity, Frances E. Carey, was there to the end. Joy was a Newport News native. She graduated from Menchville High School. She loyally began in the banking industry thirty-five years ago and continued until her cancer diagnosis. She leaves behind to treasure her memories her sister, Frances E. Carey; her son, John D. Whitley; and her daughter, Shannon N. Whitley. Joy also leaves behind the light of her life, Samantha "Joy" Pipkin, her granddaughter of two and one half years old and a very special family friend, Jason Pipkin. She is also survived by her brother, Jay Tippett and his wife, Mary; and their three sons, Jay, Travis, Mark and their wives. She will be truly missed by all. WILDMAN, Thulia Park, 93, passed away on Friday, November 28, 2008. Born October 28, 1915 in Skipwith, she was the daughter of Moses Hay and Annie Norwood Park. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Jordon Mason Wildman, who died on March 17, 1993. Surviving Mrs. Wildman are a daughter, Anne Carey of Austin, Texas; and sons, Terry Wildman of Christiansburg and James Wildman of Skipwith. Five grandchildren also survive her. Thulia Wildman will be remembered as a teacher, a mother and wife who provided so well for her family on a busy tobacco farm; and an active member and leader at New Hope Baptist Church. She received her professional teaching degree from Longwood College in 1935 and immediately began teaching grades 1-4 at Oakes School in Mecklenburg County. After her children were grown she also taught at the Chase City Private School. Throughout her life she was known for her unwavering generosity, service, and welcoming spirit.
