MORRISON, Alice Gale, 66, of Beaverdam, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, December 3, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years of marriage, Thomas Gerald Morrison. Alice is survived by her two devoted daughters, Serita Ayers and Jerry Lynn Hawley; three beautiful grandchildren, Brandi Lopez, Tonya Stone and Dustin Hawley; six great-grandchildren, one sister; her best friend, Debbie Elmore; and many other relatives. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Corinth Christian Church, 9153 Dabneys Mill Rd., Manquin, on Monday, December 7, from 12 to 2 p.m. where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at the Corinth Christian Church Cemetery. Alice R. Alrich "Bobby"

ALRICH, Alice R. "Bobby," 60, of Spotsylvania County died Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at Mary Washington Hospital. Ms. Alrich was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and later received her Master's in Education from the University of Virginia. She was a past president of the Stafford Education Association. Ms. Alrich was the former Teacher of the Year at Falmouth Elementary, and traveled with Educational Delegations to China and Cuba. She was a member of the V.E.A. Fitz-Turner Commission, the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society, and the Spotsylvania Women's Club. Bobby was also a member of Goshen Baptist Church. Survivors include her sister, Elizabeth Alrich Latta of Los Altos, Calif.; four nephews, John Alrich-Altman of Charlottesville, J. Dan Latta Jr. of Portland, Ore., Steven Latta of Los Angeles, Calif. and Jeffrey Latta of San Jose, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, John R. and Alice Field Loving Alrich; and a sister, Ann Alrich Altman. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 8 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Shifflett and Melvin C. Shifflett., Tommy worked as an auto mechanic for API Automotive Service for many years where he specialized in automatic transmissions. He loved working on cars and especially restoring his 1967 Ford Fairlane GTA., He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Virginia "Sue" Shifflett; sons, Michael A. Aycock, Robert

Robert Aycock of Blacksburg, Va., passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2009, just 20 days shy of his 90th birthday. Beloved father, grandfather, husband, uncle, and colleague, he is remembered for his generosity, deep affections, and kindness--and for his incomparable dry wit. A scientist with a keen appreciation for history and literature, he was a man of broad reading and interests. He loved family and family roots. He was interested in the human condition. Robert Aycock was born on a small farm in Claiborne Parish, La., on December 23, 1919, to the late Seaborn Ray Aycock and Mary Amanda Hightower Aycock. He grew up during the years of the Great Depression, graduated from Louisiana State University in 1936 and continued his education at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C. During the World War II years, he served in the Army Medical Corps, first in a detachment servicing a regiment of Coast Guard Artillery and later as a laboratory technician at Lovell General Hospital in Fort Devens, Mass. In 1947, Bob returned to North Carolina State and undertook a PhD program in Plant Pathology. After graduation in 1949, his first employment was at Edisto Experiment Station, a branch of Clemson College, in Blackville, S.C. He returned to North Carolina in 1955 as a plant pathologist at the Horticultural Crops Research Station at Castle Hayne, where he conducted research of diseases of field-grown ornamental bulb crops. In 1963, he returned for a part-time extension position on the Raleigh campus, assuming major responsibility for the Plant Disease Clinic, while continuing research on the diseases of ornamentals., Bob served North Carolina State University as head of the Department of Plant Pathology, from 1973 to 1984. In this capacity, he took a special interest in the welfare of graduate students. He and his wife tendered warm hospitality to generations of these students, sending them off to conferences with home-made food, hosting gatherings for them, and keeping up with their achievements years after their departure from NC State. From 1969 to 1972 Bob was editor-in-chief of the major journal in the field,, Phytopathology., He served as President of the American Phytopathological Society in 1976, and in 1979 he was named a Fellow of the society. He was selected Outstanding Plant Pathologist by the APS Southern Division in 1984., Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elsie; his brothers, Seaborn Ray Aycock, Paul Aycock, and Marion Aycock; and sister, Elice Aycock Larance. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Paul Metz, of Blacksburg; his daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne Aycock and Virgil Jefferson Foutch, of Bahama, N.C.; his grandchildren, Robert and Estella Metz, of Blacksburg, and Emma and Jenny King, of Bahama; and many beloved nieces and nephews., will be held at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 9, 2009. Bob's friends and family in Raleigh, N.C., will gather to celebrate his life the week of January 4, 2010, at a time to be announced. She also had been a member of Abundant Life Ministries in Roanoke. Surviving are her husband, Rev. Calvin Wade Cox BRISTOL, Tenn. Calvin Wade Cox GYSGT U.S. Marine Corp Retired, age 50, passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born June 5, 1959, in Bristol Tennessee, son of Joe and Hulda Steele Cox. He was a retired Marine Gunnery Sgt in the United States Marines having served in Desert Storm. After his retirement he was employed as a supervisor at the U.S. Postal service in Johnson City, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Cox and Michael Cox. Survivors include: wife, Angela D. Carl Ellis Holt, Carl Ellis Holt, 87, of Esmont, died Wednesday, December 3, 2009, at the University of Virginia Medical Center., He was born February 20, 1922, in Kingsport, Tennessee, to the late Fred Larkin and Hattie (Gillenwater) Holt., Mr. Holt attended St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Esmont. He graduated from Scottsville High School and attended Virginia Tech before serving in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked tirelessly for Meals-on-Wheels, Boy Scouts of America and was involved with the Scottsville Bateau Festival. In 1987, he retired from Washington, D.C. Transit (Metro)., In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Atlee L. Holt and his second wife, Marjorie L. Holt; two brothers and two sisters., Survivors include two daughters, Valerie H. Cox and her husband, Larry, of Esmont and Donna H. Colebank, Frank

Frank Colebank PORTSMOUTH - Frank Colebank, 84, of the Bide-A-Wee section of Portsmouth died Dec. 3, 2009 in a local hospital. Originally of Point Marion, Pa., Mr. Colebank was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was stationed in the Tidewater area during the war. He started his career as a seaman on the Monongahela River but was best known for his exceptional automotive painting abilities. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Esther Crowe Colebank; his sister, Mary Colebank Kish of Point Marion, Pa.; his daughter and son-in-law, Susan Colebank Daniel and Addison G. Burial will be in the Edwards-Redd family cemetery in Ridgeway. The family will receive friends at the church for a half hour before the service Monday. Thompson was born Sept. 22, 1941, in Spencer to James D. Edwards and Marie E. Reid Edwards. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe W. Thompson; a son, Ronald Tucker; two sisters, Shelia Scales and Pamela Edwards; and two brothers, Kenneth and Stanley Edwards. She graduated from Patrick Central High School and retired after 20 years as a cook with the Beecher School District in Flint, Mich. She was a member of Red Hollow Primitive Baptist Church in Spencer and was church clerk for a number of years. Surviving are a son, Richard D. Eddie L. Wood

Eddie L. Wood was set free from Alzheimer's and cancer on Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Birch Gardens Nursing Facility in Augusta County. He was a man who put faith and family above all else., Born on July 5, 1926, in Albemarle County, Eddie was the eighth of nine children of Stuard Grayson and Anna McAllister Wood. Preceding him in death were five brothers and their wives, Ervin and Ruth of Ivy, Thomas and Louise of Albemarle County, Stuard and Virginia of Waynesboro, Kenneth and Ann of Crozet, and Fulton and Ellen of Ivy; and a brother-in-law, Morrison Willis of Ivy., Following high school, Eddie was a member of the United States Army and spent several months on duty at the Sugamo Prison in Japan. He then began his higher education, attending both Bridgewater College and Virginia Tech for his undergraduate work. He received his Master's degree in Resource Management from the University of Montana., Eddie spent more than 30 years working for the United States Department of Agriculture in Soil and Water Conservation. Stewardship of the earth was his mission. He designed more than 50 ponds in Albemarle County alone. Eddie was also the primary designer of the Mountain Run Dam Project in Culpeper County., He enjoyed international travel as a part of his job as well, advising the governments in Ecuador and Thailand on agricultural projects. He served as the State Conservationist in both Maine and Kentucky before retiring to Albemarle County in 1983., Eddie is survived by his wife, Norma Dukes, whom be married on May 2, 1950, in Maryland; and by two daughters and their husbands, Paula and Peter Welch of Crozet, and Trinlie Wood and Mark Allen of Madison County. His pride and joy were his five grandchildren, Erin Wood, of Richmond, Virginia, Adam Welch of Crozet, Virginia, Amber Allen of Hampton, Virginia, Chase Welch and his wife, Meg, of Chicago, currently serving in the United States Marine Corps, and Dos Allen of Boston, Massachusetts. Also surviving are two sisters, Lucille Willis of Augusta County, and JoLee and her husband, B.B. Hanger of Staunton; and brother, Dan, and his wife, Catherine, of Waynesboro., While Eddie enjoyed golf and hunting, and an avid community gardener, his family was his passion. His constant reminder to all of his family was, "We are so blessed!", No matter where he lived, Eddie was always active in the church, serving many years at Mountain Plain Baptist Church, and the Crozet Baptist Church locally. He taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and was a deacon. His deep reverence for faith, family, and the earth was evident to those around him., Funeral services will be held at the Crozet Baptist Church 11 a.m. Saturday, December 5, 2009. Burial will follow at Mountain Plain Cemetery with the Reverend David Collyer officiating. Edna was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jesse Matthew Marlowe; her daughter, DeLora Marlowe Dollar; and her grandson, Dr. Mathew David Dollar., She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Dean and Eileen Marlowe, and Kimball and Cathy Marlowe; and her daughter, Rae Nell Marlowe; and her son-in-law, Dr. James Dollar, all of Newport News. Also left to cherish her memory are her brother and sister, Colin Sholar and Ruth Medley, both of North Carolina. Edna is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren., Edna's family will lovingly remember and miss her frequent phone calls to check on everyone's health and welfare., Edna was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

WINTER, Elaine Spence, 86, of Richmond, died December 3, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis E. Winter Sr.; and her daughter-in-law, Sallie B. Winter. Elaine was one of nine children, seven sisters and two brothers. She is survived by two sons, L. Gene Winter and daughter-in-law, Shirley Hall Winter; and Gregory S. Winter; two adored grandsons, Ross Monroe Winter and Alexander S. Winter; two sisters, Gladys S. Bolling and Eula Mae Jones; and her two dearest life long friends, Rose Robins and Francis Sullivan. She and her sisters grew up in the Masonic Home of Virginia and graduated from Highland Springs High School. She was a founding member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church and served as a board of director member and as choir director. She was retired from Defense General Supply Center as a GS-12 where she also became a very active member of the International Toastmistress Association. After her retirement from DGSC, she joined New Horizons Realty as a realtor. Her remains rest at Bliley's-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Interment private. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks for the loving care given to her by the staff at Elmcroft of Chesterfield Assisted Living. She was born on June 1, 1943, and raised in Monaca, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Chester E. Huff and America M. Huff. On Dec. 7, 1970, she married her husband, Arthur, and traveled extensively with him and their children as an Army family., A tireless worker, devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend to many, she will be missed by her family and friends around the country. Ellen was very active at church, as well as in local gardening and book clubs. French Kelly Keesling RURAL RETREAT, Va. French Kelly Keesling, age 87, passed away on Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, Va. Mr. Keesling was born in Smyth County to the late John French Keesling and Marietta Vaught Keesling and was preceded in death by his first wife, Fleta Martin Keesling; a step-son, Michael Ward; two sisters, Pansy Daugherty and Thelma Keesling. He was a member of the Sharon Baptist Church, the Mt. Empire Antique Tractor Club and the Senior Citizens 55 bowling team. Mr. Keesling worked as a salesman and serviceman for many years at Brodie Thompson's in Marion and Fowlke's Machinery in Wytheville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Italy during World War II and was the recipient of several medals of valor. Mr. Keesling was an avid fisherman and photographer and recorded services at Sharon Baptist Church for many years. Survivors include: wife of 30 years, Freda Keesling; five children, Tessie Hughes and husband Billy Ed, Marion, Jeanie Stewart and husband Dickie, Richmond, Richard Keesling and wife Jackie, Marion, Jerry Keesling and wife Roxanna, Troutdale, Gary Keesling and wife Vivian, Roxboro, N.C.; one brother, Harold Keesling and wife Marie, Roxboro, N.C.; one sister, Jackie Chandler and Husband Jerry, Tallahassee, Fla.; three step-children; 22 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews friends and other family members also survive. She is survived by a daughter, Ann Gaskins Jennette Jordan and husband Randy of Buxton; a son, Edgar Chadwick "Buddy" Gaskins Jr. and wife Mary Ann of Chesapeake; a daughter, Kathleen Gaskins Mackenzie and J.T. Mayis of Buxton. Miss Kathleen had six grandchildren, Suzanne, Leo, Holly, Adam, Chad and Kevin; three stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren. Cauble of Great Falls, Va.; nine grandchildren, Arian, Beau and Caley Terrill, Stephanie Cauble, Darren and Matthew Cauble, Ryan Gilliam, and Sarah and Nicholas Matalone; four great-grandchildren, Isis, Charlee, Jackson and Cameron; one niece, Virginia Gordon Sams Muse of Decatur, Ga.; and two nephews, David C. Cauble Jr. of Mebane, N.C., and David Z. Cauble III of LaGrange, Ga. Gen. Cauble was a mechanical engineering graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology and earned his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He served his country as the Signal Officer of the 29th Army, going ashore on D-Day, being wounded at St. Lo, and serving through the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, where the family will receive friends from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday (today). Gustie Hollander Hedrick, 87, of Troutville, Va., died on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, in the Memory Care and Enrichment Center of Richfield Retirement Community from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Born on April 8, 1922, in Clinchco, Va., Gustie graduated from Crossnore School in Crossnore, N.C., and then completed her nursing education and was awarded her R.N. from Grace Hospital in Banner Elk, N.C. Most of her nursing career was spent in Roanoke, Va., where she was a top-notch and very popular private duty nurse. Her career spanned over 40 years, and she took pride in offering superb patient care. Many of her former patients stayed in touch with her, even after her retirement., Gustie loved to write, read and garden, and enjoyed the company of her cat. She passed her deep love of books and reading to her daughter, Zelma., She is survived by her husband of 60 years, L. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary Monaghan., She is survived by her husband, Adolph John; her sons, John of The Plains, Virginia, and James of Aldie, Virginia; daughters- in-law, Megan and Kimberly; and her grandchildren, John Paul, Lauren Holly and Owen Christopher., Helen grew up in New York City, graduated from Notre Dame Academy and the Katharine Gibbs School of New York. She modeled at the Ford Modeling Agency of New York through which she met and later married her husband of 52 years Adolph John. A resident of Scottsville, Virginia, for 19 years she invested her time supporting and regularly attending the St. George Catholic Church. She served as a member of the board of Meals on Wheels of Charlottesville-Albemarle and participated in many local charitable functions and causes. Helen enjoyed her leisure time as a member of the Virginia Creepers Garden Club, Tri-County Riding Club and the Farmington Country Club. In addition she participated in local bridge and yoga groups. She also enjoyed traveling extensively around the world throughout her life. She served as Job's Daughters Honor Queen of Bethel 3, a member of Eastern Star; was a former president of Little Creek Women's Club, served a term as president of the Federation of Garden Clubs of Norfolk, and was an active member in both the Church of The Advent and Ocean View Baptist Church. Deeply loved by so many, Virginia was a loving, caring influence to all who have crossed her path. A generous, kind and compassionate spirit, Virginia will be sorely missed. FERGUSON, Jerry T. Ph.D., 71, passed away December 2, 2009 peacefully in his sleep of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his son, Preston Ferguson. He is survived by his loving companion, Herma Ferris of 24 years and his extended family, Rebecca and George Windom, Marina Leneave-Schwartz and Daniel Schwartz; grandchildren, Josh and Nick Windom, Jake Leneave, Becca and Tori Schwartz. Jerry was Professor of Real Estate at VCU where he served on the faculty for 38 years, retiring in 2003. He earned a Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Virginia Tech and his Ph.D. from the Univisity of Florida. He was the author of seven books and numerous scholarly articles, and served as the advisor to Rho Epsilon. Jerry was an active Leader in the Richmond Downtown YMCA for many years and served on committees for fundraising and membership. He loved to play competitive handball and was the city doubles champion for several years. He thrived on competition and played in many local and regional tournaments. During his retirement he focused on his passions including gardening, cooking, reading, and in recent years enjoyed traveling worldwide. Dec 4, 2009 Joseph T. Leigh, 80, of 1508 Microfilm Road, Bassett, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at his home. He was born July 3, 1929, in Pittsylvania County to William H. Leigh and Martha F. Talbert Leigh. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John Leigh, Jim Leigh and Link Leigh; and three sisters, Nancy Lester, Rebecca Gardner and Ethel Sarrels. Leigh retired from Bassett Furniture Industries. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Nancy L. Leigh of the home; twin sons, Terry Wayne Leigh and Larry Wayne Leigh, both of the home; two sisters, Edna Hall of Danville and Jenny Alson of Appleton, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at County Line Church of God of Prophecy Church cemetery with the Rev. Ron Peal officiating. The funeral procession will leave Bassett Funeral Service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday to go to the cemetery. Mrs. King was born in Grayson County, Va., to the late Thomas and Lura Blevins and was preceded in death by her husband James Hoover King; a daughter, Imogene Blevins; a grandson, Wayne Blevins; two brothers, Albert and Earl Blevins; four sisters, Blanche Russell, Mabel Vernon, Wilma Rotenberry and Paris Shelton. Marie was a long time member of the Lincoln Hill Baptist Church and was retired from the Southwestern State Hospital in Marion. Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Bennie King and wife Kathy, Rural Retreat; one sister, Ruby Woods, Marion; seven grandchildren including a special grandson, Michael King and wife Tammy; two great-grandchildren, James and Matthew King; several great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Glen King and wife Mary; special nieces, Sherry and Janet; several nieces, nephews and other loving family members also survive. Dawson Mary Sue Dawson, 86, lost her battle with cancer on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at her home in Saltville. She was the daughter of the late Rob and Minnie Bennett. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Billy K. Dawson, and a sister, Maxine Dawson Helton. She attended many churches but made her home at Midway Chapel. She touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed. She is survived by two sisters, Pauline Plumb of Saltville and Katie Price of Emory; several nieces and nephews; and special friends and caregivers Dreama Minton, Revonda Surber and Angie Day. Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at Midway Chapel Church with the Rev. Kenny Gilbert officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Elizabeth Cemetery. Bertha V. McCallister HERTFORD - Bertha V. McCallister, 94, formerly of Norview Heights in Norfolk, went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2009, after a lengthy battle with dementia. Born Bertha Florence VanReenen on Feb. 6, 1915 in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, she earned her registered nursing degree from Laird Memorial Hospital in West Virginia in 1941. She worked at Beckley Hospital in West Virginia and Leigh Memorial and Lake Taylor Hospital in Norfolk. Bertha was a faithful member of the Tabernacle Church of Norfolk for more than 48 years where she worked in the nursery, taught Sunday school, and was a member of the Ephesians Sunday school class. Her other activities included work with the Senior Citizens, Lydia Group and Christian Women's Club. Bertha was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Gilbert N. McCallister; two brothers; two sisters; one son, Lloyd R. McCallister; and one grandson, Bryan McCallister. Survivors include three sons, Gilbert McCallister Jr. of Richmond, Va., Van McCallister of Terlton, Okla., and Wynn McCallister of Hertford, N.C.; their spouses, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law in Ohio and West Virginia; several nieces and nephews scattered across the country. McFadden, Margaret Skipper Morgan

Margaret Skipper Morgan McFadden, 92, of Blacksburg, Va., passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2009, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born on April 27, 1917, in Putnam County, W.Va., to John and Mary Alice Skipper Morgan. Margaret was one of eight daughters, and as she was fond of saying, she was the "fifth down, fourth up." After graduating from high school in St. Albans, W.Va., in 1935 she attended a two-year business college in Charleston, W.Va., and then worked in the county agent's office in Winfield, W.Va., for several years. In 1942 she moved to Blacksburg, Va., to take a job with the war-time Agricultural Adjustment Administration., In Blacksburg Margaret met Leonard "Mac" McFadden, a young mathematics professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute; they were married on May 6, 1944. In December 1948 the couple moved into the home they built on Dunton Drive, where they raised a family of four and where Margaret lived until 2008 when she moved to Showalter Center in Warm Hearth Village. She was a member of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution., Margaret loved to dance, travel, and play golf, tennis, and bridge. She was a wonderful cook and hostess, an accomplished seamstress, and enjoyed all kinds of needlework, art, and craft projects. As a participant in a local therapy dog program, Margaret and her beloved Maltese, Allie, brought smiles to many residents at care facilities in the Blacksburg area. In a recent chat with her son Jim, she said she hoped that "when people think about me, they'll smile, maybe...think of how much fun we had over the years, think about me in special times and in good times.", She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Leonard McFadden, who passed away in 1995. She is survived by her sisters, Harriet Taylor and Virginia Valentine, both of Hurricane, W.Va.; and her children, Lynne Johnson and husband, Mikkel Johnson, of Los Alamos, N.M., Barbara McFadden, of Beckley, W.Va., Mary Jane McFadden and husband, Horace Allen, of Powatan, Va., Jim McFadden and wife, Susan McFadden, of Warsaw, Va. She was "Mamaw" to grandchildren, Kara Johnson, Krista Johnson, Christopher George, Noah Allen, Michael Allen, and Morgan McFadden; and "Great-Mamaw" to great-grandchildren, Tyler, Lilly, and Alice George., at the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2009. Roy E. Merrell Sr. CURRITUCK - Roy Edward Merrell Sr., 94, of the 5900 block of Caratoke Highway died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mr. Merrell, a native of Currituck County, was the son of the late Isaac Holly Merrell and Paulina Woodhouse Merrell and the widower of Hilda Bryant Merrell. He was a retired welder from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in the Philippines, and a member of Poplar Branch Baptist Church. Mr. Merrell was an avid sportsman, especially duck and goose hunting on Currituck Sound. Mr. Merrell is survived by a daughter, Sandra Merrell Kaylor and husband Robert S. of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sons, R. Edward Merrell Jr. and wife Linda of Cibolo, Texas, and Randy Lee Merrell and wife Mary Beth of Elizabeth City, N.C.; three sisters, Marie Henderson, Mary Franssen and Lessie Pugh; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She retired from the development office of the University of Richmond in 1985 and was an avid Spider football and basketball fan. Randy Hicks Randall Steele Hicks, 55, beloved father of Brittany and Lorie Hicks, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at his home. He attended Hiwassee College where he received his associates degree. He retired from S&ME Inc. Randy preferred the simple pleasures of life. Robert J. "Bob" Shankel BRISTOL, Tenn. Robert J. "Bob" Shankel, 83, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, in the Wellmont Hospice House. He was a son of the late Joe Bob and Hassie Osborne Shankel and was a life long resident of Bristol. He was an employee of the former H.P. King Company and was the owner and operator of the Robert Shankel Moving Company. He was a member of the King Masonic Lodge No. 461 and was an active member of Fellowship Chapel for 40 years. Bob was a kind and gentle man. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia King Shankel; sisters, Lorene Byington and her husband Frank, Nancy Mitchell and Joyce Nixon and her husband Bob; brother-in-law, Darius King; sister-in-law, Roberta Shankel; special niece, Terry Williams; and several nieces and nephews. Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Isabel Fritz Rosengrant Miller and his late stepfather Jake Miller and father Herbert. Rosengrant Sr. He was a graduate of the Wyoming High School, Class of 1961. Mr. Rosengrant was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving during the Bay of Pigs Invasion and the Vietnam War. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Owens-Ilinois formerly of Pittston Township for 30 years as an industrial mechanic. He was a member of the Courthouse Community United Methodist Church, Virginia Beach. Herb was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather who dedicated his life to his family. He enjoyed motorcycles, hunting and shopping. Herb made an imprint on every life he touched. Ruby Rose Carley "Irish"

CARLEY, Ruby Rose "Irish," who loved her family, her cat, her crossword puzzles, and a "Manhattan cocktail," born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on December 29, 1924, answered the call of the Lord on December 3, 2009 to join her husband of 46 years, Frank J. Carley Sr. While raising her children, she also spent time as a school bus driver and pre-school teacher. At age 50, she earned her LPN nursing degree and served as a medicine nurse at Ashland Convalescent Center. She is survived by her six children, Kathleen Mary Webb (Dennis), Patricia Anne Meadows (Robert), Frank Jr., Susan Marie Partin (R. Lee), Maureen Elizabeth, and Michael John (Carol). She was loved and will be missed by her 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was a longtime resident of Ashland, Va. Three years ago, she moved to Summerhill Retirement Community, where she entertained the residents as she sat on her front porch playing her harmonica. Robertson was born Nov. 24, 1925, in Axton to Dee Moses Robertson Sr. and Betty Cook Robertson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Mary Jane Minter Robertson; seven brothers, Gordon Wesley Robertson, Dee Moses Robertson Jr., Frank Robertson, Roy Robertson, Henry Robertson, Dan Robertson and Abraham "Jiggs" Robertson; three sisters, Sadie Jones, Cassie Lester and Lena Roach; and a great-granddaughter, Lena Spitzer. He graduated from Axton High School with a Navy Diploma, and he served in the Navy during World War II as a gunner on USS Shamrock Bay stationed in the South Pacific. Robertson was a lifelong self-employed farmer. He was a charter member of Central Baptist Church in Axton, where he served as a deacon, trustee, usher and Sunday School teacher. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Robertson Spitzer of Axton and Susan Robertson Smith of Ruffin, N.C.; four sons, Sam K. Robertson Jr. of Greencastle, Pa., and G.W. Thomas Jasper Wilkinson Jr. "T.J." Thomas Jasper Wilkinson Jr., "T.J.," 91, of Lynch Station, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at Autumn Care of Altavista. He was born Feb. 18, 1918, in Lynch Station, a son of the late Thomas Jasper Wilkinson and Mary Andrews Wilkinson. He was a retired senior vice-president and cashier at First National Bank of Altavista with 40 years of service; a charter member of Lynch Station Ruritan Club, where he was a very active member and served in many leadership jobs during his 55 years of membership; a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church; and a Mason with more than 50 years of service in Campbell Lodge 316 AF & AM. Mr. Wilkinson was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Air Force. He is survived by a sister, Virginia W. Carter, who makes her home with her granddaughter, Robin Carver, her husband, Robert, and their son, Jacob Carver, in Bremen, Ga; a niece, Pamela Bandy of Norfolk; a great-nephew, Brian Bryson of Washington, N.C.; three great-great-nephews, Nicholas, Corey and Justin Powell; and a great-great-niece, Samantha McComb, and her husband and daughter, Sadie. He was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly W. Powell, and her husband, Hampton O. Powell; a brother-in-law, L. C. Carter; and his niece's husband, J. R. Bandy. A funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, in the Finch & Finch Chapel, Altavista, by the Rev. Allan Murphy and the Rev. Phil Stevens. Masonic Rites will be conducted by Campbell Lodge # 316 AF & AM. A private burial will be on Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church Cemetery. BAKHSHI, Vidya Sagar, 70, of Colonial Heights, Virginia, was born in Ralwalpindi, India. He died Thursday, December 3, 2009, following a sudden decline in health. He is survived by his wife, Agnes McGuffie Dayton Bakhshi; his son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Raja McGuffie and Elizabeth Everett Bakhshi; his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Krish Dayton Bakhshi Quarberg and Ryan Paul Quarberg; and two grandchildren, Emma Frances and Joshua Roan Bakhshi. He also is survived by one brother, Shiv Kumar Bakhshi of Centerville, Ohio, and three sisters, Krishna Bakhshi Sharma of Baroda, India, Dev Hutti Bakhshi Vijra of Haridwar, India, and Santosh Bakhshi Saraswat of Dublin, Ohio. In 1947, Sagar's family fled what is now Pakistan and settled in New Delhi, India. Coming to the United States in 1963, he completed his Ph.D. in mathematics at Oregon State University, after which he was a full professor at Virginia State University until the present. A memorial service will be held at Galilee Episcopal Church, 40th Street and Pacific Avenue, in Virginia Beach on Sunday, December 6 at 2 p.m. H.D. Virginia "Ruby" Clements Lowe went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 3, 2009., She was a long time employee of Phillip Morris USA with 23 years of service., She leaves behind two daughters, Yvonne Kearney and Virginia Davis. She also held close to her heart four stepdaughters, Becky, Elizabeth, Debbie and Hope. Her devotion to her grandchildren, Alexander and Judith Klein was unwavering. Her pride and joy were held by great-grandsons, Robert Boyd Flippo Jr. and John William Davis. She leaves behind four sisters who will eternally grieve the loss of their sister, Shirley Robertson, Betty Jo Dudley, Constance Beazley and Penny Martin. Virginia Smith Garton, Virginia Louise Smith Garton, 82, of Charlottesville died on Thursday, December 3, 2009, at a local health care facility., She was born in Louisa County on February 2, 1927, the daughter of the late James Edloe and Ruby Thomas Smith. She was also predeceased by her husband, Clarence W. Garton; three sisters, Lillian S. Armstrong, Alice Kathryn Smith, Mary Byrd Smith; and two brothers, James E. Smith and Lee Smith., Virginia retired from State Farm Insurance in 1974 to care for her first grandchild and continued to provide child care until January, 2005 when she suffered her first stroke. Many have called her "Granny". She was a charter member of the Cherry Avenue Christian Church and former member of the Merry Mates Sunday School Class., She is survived by a daughter, Pat Durrer and her husband, Tom; and one son, Larry Garton., Also surviving are her grandchildren, Rick Durrer and his wife, Skye, of Stanardsville, Troy Durrer of Charlottesville, Julie Edwards of Charlottesville and Megan Garton of Virginia Beach, and their mother, Beth Gibson; great- grandchildren, Alli Durrer of Stanardsville and Amya, Taniya and T. J. Edwards of Charlottesville. She is also survived by two brothers-in-law, T. W. Armstrong of Charlottesville and Raymond Garton of High Point, North Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews., Both Virginia and her roommate, Louise Clements, went together on Thursday, December 3, 2009, to join the Lord., Her family would like to thank the nurses and staff from Charlottesville Health and Rehabilitation for their care and compassion during Virginia's illness and Hospice of the Piedmont for their kindness and care during the past few months., A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, December 6, 2009, at the Teague Chapel with Mr. Scott Carter and Mr. Stan Martin officiating.
