ALLIE HALBLEIB

HALBLEIB, Allie Martin, 92, of Ashland, Va., died December 21, 2009. Mrs. Halbleib was born on November 1, 1917 in Ellerson, Va. to James Toler and Lillie Mahone Martin. She was predeceased by her husband, Julius Bernard "Dutch" Halbleib Jr.; and one grandson, Sloan Kemp Headrick; also, two brothers, Willie Martin and Jesse Martin; six sisters, Mae White, Josephine Bradley, Margaret Peed, Helen Staples, Florence Baskett and Virginia Martin. Survivors include one son, M. Craig Halbleib and wife, Donna; Martha H. Headrick and husband, Ron; Jane H. Jones and husband, Yancey; five grandchildren, Sydney L. Halbleib, Yancey S. Jones Jr., Dutch M. Jones, Marshall C. Halbleib Jr. and Clay R. Halbleib; one great-grandchild, Indigo Z. Drake; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Halbleib spent 26 years as a teacher and guidance counselor, inspiring and guiding students in Hanover and Henrico schools. A graveside service for family will be held December 23, at 1 p.m. at Woodland Cemetery in Ashland. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Mrs. Halbleib's life on Saturday, December 26, at the Jones' home, 11311 Dairy Lane, Ashland, from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ashland Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. She was a member of Rocksprings United Methodist Church., Alice was the beloved wife of Ronald Rowe of the home. In addition to her husband and her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Lauren Davidson of Hampton, Va.; a son, Eric Rangel and his partner, Sue Ellen Castle of Pearland, Texas; a twin sister, Ann Hendricks Stass and her husband, Sanford A. Stass, MD of Columbia, Md.; stepchild, Veronica Hopkinson and husband, James of Sterling, Va.; and several nieces and nephews., In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Steven Bert Hendricks; and a daughter, Alicia Rangel.

Aubrey Arnold Perkins

Aubrey Arnold Perkins HONAKER, Va. Mr. Aubrey Arnold Perkins, age 82, of the Wysor Valley section passed away Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, in a Bristol Tennessee hospital. Born April 30, 1927, in Jewell Ridge, Va., he was a son of the late Rev. Simpson and Magnolia Boyd Perkins. A lifelong resident of the area, he was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired coal miner, having been employed at Island Creek VP No. 1 and was a member of UMWA Local No. 1509. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Lucy Tiller; three brothers-in-law, Jerry Tiller, Gene Honaker, and Elmer Fuller; and one niece, Suzy Taylor. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Virginia Fuller Perkins of the home; three daughters, Barbara Barnhart and husband, J.C. and Connie Perkins all of Honaker, and Nina Miller and husband, Steve of Swords Creek; two sisters, Pearlie Honaker and husband, Jessee and Shirley Honaker all of Honaker; two granddaughters, Jennifer Dye and husband, Roger and Angela "Barney" Barnhart all of Honaker; two grandsons, Christopher Monk of Honaker and Travis Miller of Swords Creek; two great-grandsons, Hunter Dye and Dawson Ryan Dye; two step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with the Rev. Bill Newton and the Rev. Arvil Arwood officiating. Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon, Va. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Tuesday.


 


 

Audrey Lee Daniel

DANIEL, Audrey Lee, 69, of Richmond, passed away Monday, December 21, 2009. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Willard E. Daniel Sr.; four children, Willard E. Daniel Jr., Kelvin Lee Daniel and his wife, Christie, Lisa Ann Daniel and Laura Kay Daniel; her mother, Pauline Slayton; one brother, Morgan Slayton; two sisters, Patricia Ann Taylor and Carolyn Rose Tucker; three grandchildren, Matthew Everette, Andrew Mark and Kelley Pauline Daniel; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Audrey was known for her love of children and was fondly referred to as the "Lakeside mom". She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. HAMPTON - Betty Fowler Wornom, 90, of Sanford, formerly of Hampton, Va., died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009., Mrs. Wornom had been a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Hampton for 60 years. She graduated from Buxton Hospital Nursing School in 1941 as a registered nurse and was a member of the Elizabeth Buxton Nursing Society. For many years, she worked with and retired from the Newport News Health Department., Mrs. Wornom is survived by her sons, Samuel J. Wornom, III and wife Sandra, and William Upshur Wornom and wife Rebecca; grandchildren, Lesley Wornom McKay and husband Richard, Laurie Wornom Phillips and husband Paul, Susan Bagley and husband Allen, William Upshur Wornom, Jr., Michael Thomas Wornom and wife Sonya, Tina Harrington and husband Tommy, Jeff Lankford and wife Morgan, and Kenneth Patterson and wife Tammy; 19 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

NEWPORT NEWS - David Lee Hicks passed away suddenly at the age of 62, on Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at his residence., He was born Oct. 15, 1947, in Ironton, Ohio, a son of the late Grover Taylor and Emma Jean Bradley of Proctorville, Ohio, and the late Howard H. Hicks of Springfield, Ohio., David was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was currently employed at the Military Traffic Management Command located at Fort Eustis, Va. He was a member of Mariners Masonic Lodge No. 215., Left to cherish his memory is his sister and brother-in-law, Lena J. and Maurice L. Sexton of Virginia Beach; a brother and sister-in-law, Grover W. and Deborah K. Bradley of Proctorville, Ohio; five nieces, Pamela Weibley (Jared), Lorra Calvert (Brian), Jayme Golden (David), Angela Sites (Matthew), Heather Bradley (Ray); one nephew, Chad Simpson (Kathy); and nine great-nieces and nephews. David also leaves behind his very special companion and sweetheart, Anna McDaniel and children, Terra and Joshua McDaniel. Dennis B. Grindstaff BISHOP, Va. Dennis B. Grindstaff, age 58, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at his home. Born June 30, 1951, at Bluefield, W.Va., he was a son of the late Clemon Basil Grindstaff and Betty Frances Kern Grindstaff. He was a 1969 graduate of Tazewell High School and a graduate of Bluefield College. During his teaching career he taught at Tazewell Middle School and Tazewell High School as well as Big Creek and Bland Schools. He had served as Athletic Director at Big Creek High School and at Bland. Over the years of his teaching career he also served as coach for wrestling, football, and baseball. He was an avid fisherman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Lynn Grindstaff. Survivors include his daughter, Carrie Denise Harwood and husband, Cary of Blacksburg, Va.; three brothers, Charles Grindstaff and wife, Suzanne of Tazewell, Va., Phil Grindstaff of Bishop, and Todd Grindstaff and wife, Cathy of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Mary Anne Grindstaff of Raleigh, N.C.; many nieces and nephews; and his best friend, his dog, Scamper. The family will receive friends at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, Va., from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009. JOHNSTON, Esther Dorey, 85, of Richmond, widow of James W. Johnston, passed away Sunday, December 20, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry F. Dorey and Alice O. Hake; and her siblings, Helen Shelton, Rosalie Shelton, Lillian Dabney, Mildred Vaughan, Mary Collette and Henry Dorey. She is survived by a daughter, Marie J. Cohn, who was blessed to have the best and most loving parents anyone could ever have; son-in-law, Matthew R. Cohn; three grandchildren, Alex, Adam and Rebecca Cohn; two sisters, Thelma Vaughan and Marie Babey; and brother, Robert Dorey; as well as many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Johnston was a registered nurse for 40 years and a graduate of St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in Richmond. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ. He is also survived by a devoted, lifelong friend, Jerry Brady. Doug was a graduate of John Marshall High School, where he was a member of the Cadet Corp, Company B, after which he proudly served his country for 22 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was a graduate of the NCO Academy and recipient of a Medal of Commendation. He also served time in England, Germany and Japan on flying status for 12 years. After retiring as a master sargeant in 1974, he worked for 18 years at Philip Morris as a supervisor. He was also a 32nd degree Mason. He loved his family and country and will be remembered as a true gentleman, who was always respectful of others. He was born June 29, 1961 in Ilion, N.Y. He was the son of Carol Anne Wood Harwick. He was an inspiration to all who knew him especially to the young people in his life. He inspired them to better themselves. He was a loving husband, father who will be loved and missed by all who knew him. He was an avid builder for his wife. Dec 22, 2009 The funeral for Jane Stultz Lewis, 84, of Fieldale, who died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fieldale Baptist Church with the Rev. She was born in Roanoke on June 20, 1925, to Leonard Stultz and Hattie Weeks Stultz. She graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and was a private music teacher. She was a member of the Virginia Music Teachers Association, was a docent at Piedmont Arts Association and was a member of the DAR. A longtime active member of Fieldale Baptist Church, she had been the music director, church pianist and a deacon. Surviving are her husband, Jack Nathan Lewis Sr. of the home; two daughters, Jane Rhea Douglas of Roanoke and Kitty Kim Lewis of Miami Springs, Fla.; a son, Jack Nathan "Nat" Lewis Jr. of Palmetto Bay, Fla.; and three grandchildren. John Gray

GRAY, John C., 87, died peacefully on December 20, 2009 in Woodhaven Hall at Williamsburg Landing. Mr. Gray was born October 15, 1922 in Baltimore, Md. and grew up in Richmond, Va. Jack graduated from Virginia Tech in the class of 1944 and attended graduate school at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. He served proudly in the U.S. Army during WWII. Jack retired in 1986 in San Francisco after 38 dedicated years with Westinghouse in the power systems division. Jack was active in numerous organizations, including Masons, Shriners, electrical societies and was past president of the Engineers Club in San Francisco. He has served as a deacon and elder in the Presbyterian Church and most recently was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Anne Beal Gray; daughters, Kathryn Clemens and her husband, Thomas, of Louisville, Ky., Jane Hann and her husband, William, of Daniel Island, S.C., Ellen Johnston and her husband, Jeffrey, of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Ellen Anderson of Memphis, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Kathryn Gray; and two grandchildren. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, 215 Richmond Rd., Williamsburg. Joseph C. Tisdale III

Joseph Christopher Tisdale III, 67, of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Dec. 20, 2009, at Tidelands Hospice House after suffering a stroke on Dec. 12. He was the only child of J.C. and Mary Smith Tisdale of Petersburg, Va., A graduate of Petersburg High School, Chris loved sports lettering in baseball and basketball. He was a star basketball player at Petersburg High School, scoring over 1,000 points in his high school career. An avid tennis player, he loved the game playing with his friends at the Walnut Hills tennis courts., Dr. Tisdale attended Georgia Tech and received bachelor, masters and doctorate degrees from the University of Virginia. He played college baseball at the University of Virginia and semi-pro baseball in the Valley of Virginia League. He was a math professor at Winthrop University from 1971 until retirement and a visiting professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill., For more than 30 years, Chris was a resident of Tega Cay, S.C. He was active in the Charlotte tennis community and enjoyed water sports on Lake Wylie. His interest included reading and watching news and financial media, eating out, and taking morning rides with the family dog. He was actively involved in coaching, transporting and watching his son, Jordan, play high school and AAU basketball. After moving permanently to Myrtle Beach, he enjoyed tennis with Conway and Ocean Creek men's groups, beach bands at Ocean Drive, and reluctantly learned to shag dance., Chris is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Jordan Christopher; and beloved pet, Buddy, all of Myrtle Beach. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Dr. Charles Garrison of Atlanta, Ga.; sister-in-law and husband, Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Brady of Wichita, Kansas. His aunts, Virginia S. Evans of South Hill, Va., Dorothy Smith of Richmond and Greet Smith of Staunton; and numerous cousins, who all were dear to him., Funeral services will be held at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home of Petersburg, Va., at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009. Visitation with the family will be from noon to 1 p.m. prior to the service. GRIFFIN, Leo T. Sr., 87, of Richmond, died December 18, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine (Jeannie) Lacy Griffin. He is survived by his two sons, Leo T. Griffin Jr. and wife, Peggy, of Roswell, Ga., John Patrick Griffin and wife, Kathy, of Glen Allen, Va; two grandsons, Leo T. Griffin III of Marietta, Ga. and Patrick Sean Griffin of Glen Allen, Va.; granddaughter, Tiffany Nicole Griffin of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Griffin of Marietta, Ga. Leo was a WWII Navy Veteran. After leaving the service, Leo was Vice President of Union Electric Co. in Richmond, Va. from 1946 to 1956. He helped form the Richmond Electricians Joint Apprenticeship Committee and served as the first Chairman. He taught National Electrical code and math in the apprenticeship school, and was an associate member in the International Association of Electrical Inspectors. Leo formed a consulting electrical engineering firm on February 1, 1956 and took part in the design of St. Mary's Hospital, the Blue Cross Building, Richmond City Hall and the State Monroe Building. In 1984, he transferred to the Nuclear Engineering Services Department and retired from Dominion Virginia Power on July 1, 2000. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Clevia Jackson; and two siblings, Arlene Smith and Earl Jackson., Marjorie was born in Hanceville, Ala. After high school, she went to Washington, D.C., to work during WW II, where she met her husband, Ralph. They were married and celebrated 63 years together. They traveled, with Ralph's job, over the entire U.S., living in more than 25 different cities. They lived in Milton, Fla., for the last 27 years, before moving to Williamsburg, Va., to be near their son, in August of 2009., Marjorie was an active and devout member of the First Baptist Church in Milton, Fla., and regularly attended church with her husband, where she also chaired the XYZ Group. Marjorie was also a member of the Milton Garden Club and the local AARP., Marjorie is survived by her husband of 63 years, Ralph R. Kohlenhoefer; son, Greg Kohlenhoefer and his wife, Mary of Williamsburg; grandchildren, Adrienne Brannam and husband, Patrick of Jacksonville, Fla., Amy Kohlenhoefer of Orlando, Fla., and Greg Kohlenhoefer of Greenville, N.C.; and great-grandchildren, Hailey Brannam, Jackson Brannam, and Audrey Brannam., Marjorie's love and devotion to her husband was very evident and was admired by all who knew her. Each "grand" had a unique and delightful relationship with their "Gram." She was also a Stephen Minister volunteer for the church. Katharine Oldfield Miller NORFOLK - Katharine Oldfield Miller, 76, surrounded by her family, passed away peacefully Dec. 20, 2009, after a valiant battle with cancer. Kaye, a Norfolk resident of the Larchmont community was a lifelong volunteer who dedicated herself to charitable ventures while also being actively involved in a variety of business endeavors, most recently as real estate agent with William E. Wood and Associates. During the 1970s and early 1980s, she was able to fulfill both her business and volunteer spirit while acting as the area coordinator of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) a project of the Southeast Virginia Area Wide Model Program (SEAVAMP). She also owned and operated a small business venture, Kaye Miller Antiques. Kaye's volunteer work began early with her involvement as a charter and lifelong member of the Margaret Roper Moss Circle of the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. Then a junior circle, it evolved to an adult circle and became the driving force behind the annual Holly Ball for which Kaye acted as decorating chairman for many years. She was active in the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach holding the position of Azalea Board co-chair as well as chairman of the Thrift Shop. She served as a member of the auxiliary board for Leigh Hospital, where she also served as a pink lady. Her love of animals was evident with her involvement as secretary and longtime board member of the Gordon Setter Club of America. She also was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. Kaye was born Oct. 7, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas, the third of three children to U.S. Air Force Col. Charles Belding Oldfield Jr. and Marguerite Illing Oldfield. As a child, she traveled with her family while her father established and commanded various Army Air Corps training bases across the country and in the Panama Canal Zone. After World War II, the family returned to Norfolk, and she graduated Maury High School, Class of 1951. She later attended Georgetown Visitation College, Norfolk Division of The College of William and Mary and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was presented at the Norfolk German Club in 1952. She married William Sheppard Miller Jr. on Sept. 11, 1954, and soon thereafter began her most fulfilling and rewarding life's work, as she embarked upon motherhood. Kaye was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her brother, Lt. Cmdr. Charles Belding Oldfield III; and sister, Marguerite Oldfield Luckett. She is survived by her three children, Katharine Miller Whitely, William Sheppard Miller III, Maria Ashby Kennedy; grandchildren, William Sheppard Miller IV, Georgina Offley Miller, Katharine Rawles Miller, Mariah Delaney Kennedy, Marguerite Hannah Kennedy and Thomas Gray Miller; three nieces and nephews, Carroll Oldfield Hill, Charles Belding Oldfield IV, Robert Wise Oldfield; her sister-in-law, Carroll White Oldfield; and a myriad of cousins. Rull and Cara Whitfield; and a special nephew, Robert Hoskinson of California; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Oliver was a member of Portsmouth Christian Church, a Master Mason, Portsmouth Shriner's Club, Port Norfolk Royal Arch Chapter No. 36 Tidal Wave Lodge No. 273. He was a former employee of Seaboard Airline Railroad and retired from the Norfolk Naval Ship Yard Shop 56 as a supervisor. BROWN, The Rev. Lee Roy, 88, of Richmond, died Saturday, December 19, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pauline H. Brown; his daughter, Martha B. Schiele and her husband, Craig A. Schiele; and granddaughter, Jillian E. Schiele, all of Alexandria, Va.; a sister-in-law, Mae R. Brown of Tappahannock, Va. Mr. Brown was born in Guinea Mills, Cumberland County, Va. He graduated from Randolph-Macon College in 1941 and from Candler School of Theology, Emory University in 1944. He was a minister in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. For 44 years he served churches in Gordonsville, Wachapreague, Chancellor, Virginia Beach, Emporia, Charles City, Mechanicsville, Seaford, Dumfries, Merrifield, Vienna, Hampton and Oilville. Upon retirement to the Richmond area in 1986, he enjoyed his volunteer work at Henrico Doctors' Hospital for 20 years. He was a teacher in the Mastin Class at Trinity United Methodist Church. Samuel S. Thatcher

Samuel S. Thatcher Samuel S. Thatcher, MD, PhD, passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, after a battle with leukemia and related complications. Dr. Thatcher was born Dec. 31, 1949, in Chattanooga, Tenn. He was the eldest son of Samuel and Lucille Thatcher who preceded him in death. Dr. Thatcher is survived by his wife, Helen Walker Thatcher, of Jonesborough; one brother, Don Franklin Thatcher of Chattanooga; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lyn and Chris Hansen, of Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr. Thatcher began his career in reproductive science in 1973, studying the detrimental effects of aging on reproduction. This culminated in a PhD in human anatomy/reproductive biology at West Virginia University where he simultaneously received his MD in 1981. A year of postdoctoral research was spent between Edinburgh and Johns Hopkins Universities. On completion of his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Yale/New Haven Hospital, he returned to Edinburgh University as Lecturer in Reproductive Medicine and Medical Director of the IVF program of Edinburgh University and the Royal Infirmary. He completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and served on the faculty in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology at Yale before returning to East Tennessee in 1988. His research interests continued in reproductive aging, ovarian function, assisted reproduction and early human development. He was director of reproductive endocrinology at ETSU Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology until 1995, when he opened a private practice, the Center for Applied Reproductive Science (C.A.R.S.) with offices in Johnson City, Tenn., and Asheville, N.C. Dr. Thatcher received numerous teaching and lecture awards and was a member of several professional and patient advocacy organizations. He authored one of the first comprehensive books on polycystic ovary syndrome entitled PCOS: the Hidden Epidemic and he co-authored Making A Baby with Debra Fulghum Bruce. He was an editorial reviewer for several professional publications and enjoyed writing and speaking on fertility issues on the local, national and international levels. MARTIN, Stuart Wray, 83, of Richmond, passed away on December 19, 2009. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Mariam D. Martin; and their four daughters, Colleen M. Herbig and husband, John, Patricia M. Smith and husband, Nelson, Bonnie Jo Martin and Lydia M. Mayo and husband, Robert. He was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Stuart was awarded the Purple Heart on July 24, 1945 after serving with the United States Marine Corps, First Separation Company, MCB during the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign. He was a member of Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church for 41 years. He worked for Greentrees, Berry Burk Co. and later retired from Franco's Fine Clothier. Teresa enjoyed life with her family, especially her grandchildren, they were the apple of her eye. She was a selfless person who always thought of others first and an exceptional cook for her family and friends, who were continually bragging about the meatloaf and chicken casserole. She loved going to the beach, especially vacationing at Topsail Beach with her family in North Carolina, and attended church faithfully at Colonial Heights Baptist Church, where she enjoyed listening to the church choir and the sermons. Teresa is survived by her husband of 35 years of marriage, C. Wayne Dodson of Chester, Virginia; daughter, Jessica E. Sisk and husband, Bruce Jr., of Henrico; son, Zachary I. Dodson of Chester; grandchildren, Jillian E. and Carter W. Sisk; sister, Debra C. He attended Courtland Baptist Church, where he and his wife, Dawn were married. Donald was known for his love of the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Mr. Whitley was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Waverly L. Whitley and Paul L. Owens Sr.; his grandmother, Rachel Hoffler Owens and his uncle, Paul L. William H. Hall Jr.

HALL, William H. Jr., 81, of Richmond, died Sunday, December 20, 2009 at his home. He was a son of the late William Henry Hall and Estelle Satterwhite Hall; and is survived by his only and very close brother, James E. Hall and wife, Dorothy; a dear niece, Linda Encinas; an outstanding nephew, James Norman Hall; and his dedicated and faithful partner of 45 years, R. Donald Cook. Mr. Hall graduated from Warsaw High School in 1945. Following his attending 12 grammar and high schools throughout the state of Virginia, he also graduated from Strayer College in Washington, D.C. in 1948, where he received a B.S. degree in accounting and finance. He was employed by John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers in Washington, D.C. for 2.5 years. He then served our country during the Korean Conflict in 1950 through 1953 in the U.S. Army's 163rd Military Police Battalion and the Second Army's Headquarters Quartermaster Corps, and was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. He was employed by Virginia Electric and Power Company for 14 years, the last three of which as Assistant Comptroller, followed by a 17-year employment as Comptroller for the City of Richmond's Department of Public Utilities, from which he retired in 1985. He served on the City of Richmond's Retirement Board for 26 years and was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees for one three-year term and Vice Chairman for two full terms. He also was elected and served as President of the Richmond Association of Retired Employees (RARE) in 2007-2008. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Richmond. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Avenue, and where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. GARNETT, Zella Shumaker, of Cumberland County, died in Farmville on December 21, 2009. She was born in Buckingham County on May 20, 1913, the daughter of the late Harrison and Bette Shumaker. She was the widow of the late Robert E. Garnett. She was also preceded in death by her son, R. Edmund III; and by her two sisters and five brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Sue Mahan and her husband, Clyde; her granddaughter, Kim Hodgson and her husband, Jim; her grandson, Clyde E. (Roby) Mahan; and her two grandchildren, Tom and Katherine Hodgson; and several nieces and nephews. Other survivors include her daughter-in-law, Judy Womack and her husband, Charles, and their two sons, Michael and John, and their families; and a close friend, Charlene (Charlie) White. She was a longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Cumberland County. She was a sales clerk in the ladies department of Baldwins Dept. Store for many years. As were her wishes, there will be no visitation and there will be a graveside service, which will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 11 a.m. Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home will be in charge of the service. Remembrances may be made to the cemetery fund of Centenary Church.
