Frank Blaha Jr. (In Memoriam)

Frank Blaha Jr. 12/24/37 - 12/10/08 Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free. I'm following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard Him call; I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I found that place at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full, I've savored much, Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief; Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free. We miss you, your family.

Growing up in Jarman's Gap she was a very active participant in the Greenwood community., The year 1941 saw her in Dunbarton College in D.C. With United States entry into the Second World War, Helen joined the Air Transport Command (ATC) at Gravelly Point, Virginia. In 1943, she went with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which later became the CIA. One of her early, and unofficial, activities there was to recruit enthusiastic young women to Washington from among her acquaintance in Albemarle County. She was instrumental in bringing about 30 of them to the ATC and many to the OSS., During 1945 until 1951 Helen's duties with the OSS, both overt and covert, took her to a number of stations in the European theater, several in Italy including Como and Rome; Bern, Switzerland; Paris; London, and finally into Germany., She married Paul O'Donoghue of Washington, D.C., in 1951. Paul had seen artillery service in World War II with the 45th Division. He earned a Master's degree in Law at Harvard and became a tax-litigation specialist with the United States Department of Justice. Paul and Helen lived in Chevy Chase, Maryland, until 1982. They were members of the Chevy Chase Club and the Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Washington. Helen was also a member of the Chevy Chase Garden Club., They had four children, daughters, Margaret Castillo of New York City and Ann Hardgrove of Bethesda; and sons, Paul Jr. of Arlington, Virginia, and Walter B. O'Donoghue of Middlebury, Vermont., She was also survived by five grandchildren, Caroline Castillo, Alexander Castillo, Julia Hardgrove, Emily Hardgrove, and John Hardgrove., Paul retired in 1973. Because of his failing health they returned to Helen's turf, Greenwood, in 1983. Daughter, Margaret, with a graduate degree from Harvard in Architecture, designed and oversaw the building of her parent's new home, Pippin Hill. Ten years later, Paul died of Alzheimer's at a Charlottesville nursing home., In 1991, she left Pippin Hill and was the first resident of the newly built Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville. In her cottage at WCBR, Helen maintained an active interest in her beautiful yard and flowers. She has served on numerous of committees and was an avid bridge player. During her years at Westminster, she moved from a cottage to an apartment, spending the last several years in the Health Care Unit., A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Greenwood, with the Reverend Peter Carey officiating. After retiring from Proctor and Gamble, he formed a vocal-jazz group, Close Company, which sang at clubs, pubs and private parties in various venues in Ohio, southern Indiana, Michigan and Missouri. After he and Nancy moved to the Charlottesville, Virginia, area in 1994, he played violin in the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra and in the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra, and tuba in the Charlottesville Municipal Band, until his illness forced him to retire., Hank is survived by his wife, Nancy; two sons, Clifford B. and Philip C. Jared N. PATTON

It is believed by many that a true warrior crossed over to the place that God needed him most on Friday afternoon, Dec. 11, 2009. Jared suffered a severe brain injury at the early age of six weeks. All indications proved that Jared should have been at least institutionalized if indeed he made it at all. After many life threatening medical procedures at such an early age, it was clear that Jared wasn't finished on his journey here. Never able to speak a word, he taught numbers of people vital lessons that they would have never received elsewhere. He seemed to be a professor of unconditional love. You had to leave his presence with a deeper understanding of the principals: Compassion, Wisdom, Tolerance, and Patience. Shortly after a tragic physical event, his smile would light up the heart of whoever was lucky enough to be around. Jared loved family time at night when he would sit in his Nina's lap and wait on the popcorn being prepared by his Grandpa Steve, so that they could watch HGTV, unless the Colts or the Orioles might happen to be playing. The Family feels so blessed to have had so much time to spend with their little gladiator., Kathy and Steve Stowe would like to thank everyone who prayed so consistently for Jared, especially our friends of Bill W. They are grateful for the unrelenting medical help from Dr. Leila Binder, and her staff, the staff at MCV where Jared was airlifted the day he was injured, and everyone at CHKD for the expertise throughout his fight. His loving and dedicated physical therapist, Maryann McCarthy, the dedicated nurses at Maxim Health Care, the entire staff at Poquoson Pharmacy for doing whatever it took to keep Jared's meds prepared., Jared's Nina, Kathy Stowe, was his constant care giver and soul mate who portrayed relentless energy by loving and caring for Jared. She will miss his physical presence to a great degree, but will forever hear the echoes of his spirit deep within her. His mama, Nicole Patton loved her youngest son with all her heart and will miss his big open mouthed kisses the most. He was her heart and there he will always stay. His Grandfather, Steve Stowe, will be forever grateful to Jared for showing him it is possible to drop your guard and put fear to the side in order to give and receive unconditional love., He will be missed very much by his big brother, Jacob Patton, and his brother, Austin Fagan. He also leaves behind with much sadness his Aunt Tee Tee, Erin Palmer and her son, Aiden Palmer, and paternal grandfather Randy Palmer. He very much loved and will be missed by his huge extended family, Patrick, Susie, Elizabeth, Victoria, and Jeremy Piper. He also leaves behind his Aunt Teeny Stowe, and the many other family members., His Uncle Pete Benoit and wife, Liz, were constant visitors. As Pete and Jared would have discussions about the many missions around the world they shared while everyone else was sleeping. The Benoit children, David, Joey, and Gabrielle will miss Jared as well. Jared is responsible for the non-profit organization, Shaken Baby Syndrome of Virginia, which promotes education and awareness on the consequences of Shaken Baby Syndrome, and What to do when a Baby Cries.

Born October 16, 1925 in Philadelphia, Pa. to Sadie and Hyman Gornick, she was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 53 years, Gerald Hoffman; and her brother, Philip Gornick, who gave the full measure of his devotion to our country on June 6, 1944 at Normandy Beach. She is survived by two sisters, Rose Weiss and Lillian Ellenman, both of Philadelphia; one son, Philip B. Hoffman of Richmond and his wife, Lynn, whose loving care for Rea in these final weeks will live in our hearts forever; one daughter, Beverly H. Christian of Richmond, widow of Dr. C.W. Christian; four grandchildren, Marisa D. Hoffman of Houston, Texas, Brett S. Christian and his wife, Amy, of Richmond, Michelle B. Christian of Florida, and Bryan G. Schools of Richmond; five great-grandchildren, Logan, Cole, Maxwell, Zoe and Lexi; numerous devoted nieces and nephews; and Edna Race, who was much more than a sister-in-law. As a young lady in Philadelphia, Rea quickly evinced the welcoming friendliness, love of life, and generosity of spirit that would come to define her life, even singing on the radio. Upon her marriage to Gerald, himself the recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and several air medals for his service in World War II, she moved to Richmond where the family operated Hoffman's Lunches for many years. In the early years, Rea herself could frequently be seen behind the counter. Known to many of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews simply as Nan, it was often said of Rea that everyone she met became her friend and she made anyone she was with feel like the center of her world. Among her many volunteer activities, she was a lifetime member of Hadassah and worked on behalf of the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, the American Cancer Society. The family wishes to acknowledge the lifelong friendship of Ann D. Suzanne ROBINS

If you are reading this, I, Suzanne Kirby Robins, have passed from this life into the next on Dec. 8, 2009, at the age of 50., Those who knew me well don't need to read a list of my accomplishments or interests. So in that light, I am writing all of my family and friends a love letter here today., Not for the world would I ever choose to leave this Earth or the many fur babies, best friends, family and chosen family I have been so fortunate to have in my life. In the words of the Beatles, 'There are faces I'll remember all my life […] some have gone and some remain [...] in my life, I've loved them all.', I pray with all my heart that this appears in the local paper later rather than sooner, but that's an ongoing negotiation with God just now. I will always treasure the love I share with you all. And the bonds of love (as I see them) cannot be broken just because I have passed beyond the veil., You are all dearer to me than you can know.
