Marlin Ewald Meese

Marlin E. Meese, Marlin Ewald Meese of Palmyra died Monday at the University of Virginia Medical Center after a brief illness. He was in many ways an ordinary man who was also an extraordinary husband and father. He will be greatly missed by innumerable family and friends who loved him dearly., Marlin was born in 1932 in Faribault, Minnesota, third of four sons of Alton Meese and Alfreida (Piepho) Meese. He attended the public schools in Faribault, and was a member of the Boy Scouts. As a scout, he sometimes served as an usher at University of Minnesota football games., After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served as a radioman and electronics specialist on a P2V Neptune surveillance aircraft, in Patrol Squadron One, based in Whidbey Island, Washington. During the Korean War, Squadron One deployed to Okinawa, from which the Neptunes patrolled the straits of Formosa and waters off Korea., After honorable discharge from the Navy in 1955, Marlin returned to Minnesota and attended what was then known as Mankato State College on the GI Bill, graduating with a degree in Mathematics in 1959. He met Rose Stegmaier in Makato, and they married in December of 1958., In late 1959, Marlin took a job as an engineering draftsman for the Federal Bureau of Reclamation, in the Department of the Interior. After stints in Ogden, Utah and Sacramento, California, he transferred to the Federal Highway Administration, where he served as a real estate acquisition specialist, implementing federal standards governing the acquisition of land for the construction of the Interstate Highway System. He served in FHWA district offices in St. Paul, Minnesota, Providence, Rhode Island, and Phoenix, Arizona. He ended his Federal service in the FHWA headquarters in Washington, D.C., living in Fairfax, Virginia. While in Fairfax, he entered the Knights of Columbus, and ultimately advanced to Third Degree Knight., In 1994, Marlin and Rose retired to Palmyra, Virginia, at Lake Monticello. An accomplished craftsman, woodworker, and amateur electrician, Marlin spent much of his retirement on various remodeling projects at home and elsewhere. He also participated in numerous projects for Habitat for Humanity in Fluvanna County and, with Rose, volunteered for the National Park Service at Humpback Rock Farm on the Blue Ridge Parkway. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees., Throughout his adult life Marlin focused on pursuing his lifelong dream of "getting married and providing for his family." He was first and foremost a family man, who loved his wife and children unconditionally. He cherished his grandchildren, who knew him as "Gramps Marlin" and "Grampsy." He was always quick to lend a helping hand to friends and family in need. (Once, clad only in a bath towel, he rushed to a neighbor's house and doused a fire consuming a new and poorly-assembled gas grill.). He loved to read the paper, particularly the comics, enjoyed a good meal, was fond of cars and an excellent driver, and he usually wore a hat. In his younger years he enjoyed swimming, particularly in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island and later in the family pool in Arizona. He liked romantic comedies, because they had happy endings and read numerous Robert Ludlum spy novels. He was a gentle soul, did not take himself too seriously, and he lived according to the golden rule., He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and three brothers, Linford, Allan and Curtis., He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Rose Meese of Palmyra; his children, Alan Meese and his wife, Kelly Metcalf-Meese, of Williamsburg and Theresa Meese Landow and her husband, Timothy Landow, of Palmyra. Otis Lee Hurt

Otis Lee Hurt Longtime Bristolian Otis Lee Hurt, passed away on Dec. 24, 2009. He was 85. Born in Blacksburg, Va., Otis was the son of Bessie and Mark Nicholas Hurt, a machinist for the N&W Railway. His father died when Otis was 10 during the midst of the depression. To help support his mother and his brother, Bruce, Otis carried papers, and worked 12 hour shifts at the A&P grocery on Saturdays. Shortly after turning 18, Otis volunteered to fight in World War II. He joined the Army and subsequently became an engineer gunner in the newly-created Army Air Force. Much of his time was spent ferrying planes to Italy and North Africa. After receiving an honorable discharge in 1946, Otis enrolled in Virginia Tech, then known as VPI, on the GI Bill. Majoring in accounting, he graduated in 1949, and was elected to Phi Kappa Phi. Shortly after graduating, he accepted a job as a cost accountant from William J. Tilley at a small steel fabricator called Bristol Steel and Iron Works. He moved to Bristol and never left. In 1950, Otis noticed a new employee at Bristol Steel, a cute receptionist named Jeanne Laverne Thompson, a daughter of the legendary Bristol Herald Courier sports editor "Pappy" Thompson. After a whirlwind romance, they were married in Aug. At Bristol Steel, Otis rose through the ranks of management to become Executive Vice President in 1967. During his decades with the company, Bristol Steel experienced dramatic growth to become the largest steel fabricator in the southeast United States, and a major employer in Bristol. In 1984, he was promoted to president, a position that he held until his retirement. Otis devoted innumerable hours to serving Bristol's various civic institutions. This service included acting as chairman of the Bristol Virginia School Board, President of Bristol Memorial Hospital, President of the American Cancer Society, and President of American Heart Association. He also served on boards of the Rotary Club and the Bristol United Fund. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. He served as an elder, and chairman of the board of deacons, and taught the men's Sunday School class for many years. Otis' family was at the center of his life. He is survived by his wife Jeanne; his four children; and 14 grandchildren; daughter, Nancy, her husband Paul Schlirf, and their children, Laura Lester (Kyle), and John; son, Mark, his wife Rhonda, and their children, Lauren, Alex, and Thomas; daughter, Lynn, her husband Jim Davis, and their children, Leah, Vic and Eve; son, Eric, his wife Tara, and their children, Ryland, Mason, Griffin, Kane, Colby and Brogan. Otis was an excellent athlete. He loved baseball as child, and was a star player on the Blacksburg High School Basketball Team. But his lifelong athletic passion was tennis. Otis's love of tennis began when his mother bought him a racket for 50 cents when he was 12 years old. Two years later he won his first trophy as runner-up in the Roanoke Boys 14 and under singles city tournament. He went on to play on VPI's very first Varsity Tennis Team his senior year of college. After moving to Bristol, he became a major player in the local tennis scene for the next 50 years. He won countless tournaments in the region and was known for his steady backhand and his "ageless" athletic prowess. Even at age 63, he won the men's singles championship at Bristol County Club yet again. In 1977, Otis realized his dream of building his own tennis court. Friends and family spent many happy hours on the court with him, often ending with refreshments on the patio. A self-taught player, Otis had a passion for teaching the game to others. He taught and coached his children, who went on to excel on varsity high school and college teams. And he introduced many of his grandchildren to the game. Later, he went on to teach tennis to kids in the National Junior Tennis League, and filled in as coach of the Virginia High School Boys Tennis Team. In recognition of his many accomplishments and contributions to the game of tennis, Otis was inducted into the ETSU Tennis Hall of Fame. During his last years, Otis struggled with Alzheimers and spent the last 16 months at NHC. Yet until the end he stayed physically active and always had a welcome smile and a kind word for his family and friends. Otis's family would like to thank his caregivers Jane Hess, Peggy Bailey, and the staff at NHC for their countless hours of loving care. The visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Akard Funeral Home. Paul M. BELT Jr.

SMITHFIELD - Paul Morris Belt Jr., 66, passed away on Dec. 24, 2009, at Smithfield Convalescent Center after a difficult battle with a September stroke and its debilitating aftermath., Paul was born on Nov. 25, 1943, in Martinsburg, W.Va. He retired from the Newport News Sheriff's Office after 15 years of service, where he especially loved being Judge Frank's bailiff in Circuit Court. Paul enjoyed the simple things in life: his home, his family, his dogs, his deck, woodworking, building things, HGTV and the Food Channel, taking the dogs to the dump in his red pickup truck. He had a beautiful complexion and great hair and strong hands. He was organized and particular and enjoyed his daily routine. He loved spicy foods that made him sweat, and mushy cards that made him cry. He loved working the polls, greeting the voters, and the extra 'stash' he earned, hidden neatly away in his wallet. He loved his recliner and his remote, Toby Keith and NASCAR, and talking to Janet and Paula every weekend. He liked to tease and pick on people who were always late, but was fiercely protective of his family and his 'girls'. He was always the first to arrive, the first in line to fix his plate, and the first to leave to get back home to his beloved dogs., Paul was preceded in death by his father, Paul M. Belt Sr.; and his mother, Ruby Mae Bartles Belt. With Anne, he suffered the loss of their beloved dogs, Brandy and Starr, in 2008. We know that he made a stop at Rainbow Bridge to pick up Brandy and Starr on his way to heaven., To cherish his memory always, Paul leaves behind his family: treasured wife of 18 years, Anne Stancil Belt of Carrollton; beloved daughters, Janet Morgan and Paula Manzie of Newport News; Anne's children, Diane Fulton of Hampton and Todd Hall of Seaford; sisters, Betty Gatewood and Anna Luther; brothers, Bill Belt, Jimmy Belt, and Robert ('Tody') Belt; two grandchildren and seven stepgrandchildren; as well as numerous extended family members, loved ones, dear friends, and devoted neighbors. At the Carrollton home he shared with Anne for 13 years, Paul will be sorely missed by his beloved labs, Roxy, who will wish for his loving hands on her soft brown ears as he sits in his recliner, and Sam, who has adopted his pillow at bedtime in his absence., Anne and the family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Smithfield Convalescent Center for their compassionate care and concern during Paul's illness., A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Anne's brother, Pastor L.W. ('Bill') Stancil, will lead the service, with the burial to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park., In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor Paul's memory and his love of animals with a contribution to the Animal Aid Society in Hampton, the Peninsula SPCA, the Isle of Wight Animal Shelter, Best Friends Animal Society, or your local animal shelter., Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. On January 20, 1974, he preached his initial sermon and was licensed to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, perhaps the greatest of all of his God's given gifts. The same year Reverend Brown was ordained and sent by God to pastor at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Ivy, Virginia, and the St. John Baptist Church in Cobham, Virginia. To enhance his biblical knowledge he attended Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville, Virginia, the Virginia Seminary College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and the World Wide Mission Inc., School of Religion in Washington, D.C., where he received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree in 1983., Pastor Brown was a member of the Ministerial Council of Charlottesville and Vicinity, Chairman of The Piedmont District Baptist Association Executive Board and Music Chairman, and Assistant Secretary of the Albemarle-Nelson Passover Council. He held the position as Moderator of the Piedmont District Baptist Ministers', Deacons', and Laymen' Union for 14 years. He was Pastor Emeritus of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church after 27 years of leadership and Pastor Emeritus of the St. John Baptist Church after 33 years of leadership., As his health began to fail, Pastor Brown never wavered in his desire to be in fellowship with the saints of God. He seldom missed service at St. John Baptist Church. The church Family was his heart and he loved children of all ages. Pastor Brown was forever a man of integrity and humility. He was blessed with a gift of unusual wisdom and shared it with all who would listen. He was a man of self-respect and caused everyone he met to respect him. He was gifted with inner peace in all situations and circumstances., Pastor Brown loved his family and had a special love for his grandchildren. He spent much quality time with them in activities such as fishing, swimming, camping and taught them different kind of sports. He also taught them to be God fearing Christians and responsible citizens., Pastor Brown was blessed with two daughters- in-law, Theresa and Renee, that preceded him in death., He leaves to love and cherish his life and memories his loving, caring and devoted wife of 52 years, Nell Jean Hill Brown; his children, Roderick Brown Sr. and his wife, Paula, of Charlottesville, Robert Brown Jr. of Dumfries, Virginia, and Michele Wills and her husband, David, of Charlottesville; nine grandchildren, Kamisha Spencer and her husband, Samuel, of Charlottesville, AIC-Jared Brown of United States Air Force, Iraq, Alexa Brown of Charlotte, North Carolina, Roderick Brown Jr., Meicka Wills, Erech Wills, and Malcolm Wills, all of Charlottesville, Caleb Brown of Dumfries, and David Pendelton of Washington, D.C.; one great--granddaughter, Kenniece Brown; and one great- grandson, Jabril Brown of Charlottesville. A special thanks to the staff and volunteers of the Hospice House for the love and gentle care you provided to our love one.
