Albert F. Broughton Jr.

Albert F. Broughton Jr., 83, of Roanoke, Va., and formerly of Peekskill, N.Y., before moving to Roanoke in 1985, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, May 30, 2010. He was a member of the Emmanuel Wesleyan Church. He was retired from the New York Telephone Company and a United States Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Joan; daughter and son-in-law, Laura Broughton Stewart and Bob Stewart, of Bedford County; granddaughters, Heather Bradley, of Bedford County, Jacqulyn Joan Bryant and husband, Mitch, of Newport News, Va.; greatgranddaughters, Lauren Bradley, Kiaira Bryant; greatgrandsons, Jakob and Jashua Bradley, Cage Bryant; brothers, Gene Broughton and wife, Marie, James Broughton and wife, Joan, all of Fishkill, N.Y. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Emmanuel Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Michael N. Ennis officiating. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Angela Lisa Burrell, 37 , of Fincastle, Virginia, passed away Friday, May 28,2010. Survivors include parents, John and Barbara Burrell Sr.; paternal grandmother, Pearl Burrell; brother, Johnny Burrell Jr., all of Fincastle; a host of cousins; aunts; uncles; other relatives and friends. Annie Snellings NORFOLK - Annie Snellings, 85, beloved wife, mother and grandmother went to be with the Lord, her husband, and son on May 30, 2010. She was a lifelong resident of Norfolk and worked at the Pancake House in Wards Corner for 39 years (1962-2001). Annie will be remembered for her beautiful smile and personality. Annie is survived by her two daughters, Shirley McCutcheon and husband Joe, and Carolyn Robbins and husband Jack; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Barbara L. Norris Haskins

Barbara L. Norris Haskins, 64, of Penhook and formerly of Greensboro, N.C. passed away Saturday, May 29, 2010. Barbara was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Louise Lambert McKee, her first husband, Bobby Norris, second husband, Douglas Haskins, aunt, Roselyn Lambert Dougherty and uncle, Edgar Lambert. After graduating as Valedictorian of Clayton High School, Class of 1963, she attended the University of North Carolina Greensboro, where in 1967, she received a Bachelor's Degree in Math and in 1985, a Master's Degree in Education. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She taught for over 30 years, including Jackson Jr. High, Kiser Middle, and Page High School. She was a member of Penhook United Methodist Church, where she also served as secretary. A lifetime of joy and laughter were built on a foundation of faith. Some of her greatest joys were her grandchildren, visiting Bar Harbor and eating Maine lobster, volunteering with the Discovery Shop at Westlake, and most importantly, spending time with her family and friends at Smith Mountain Lake. Surviving are her father W. Gattis Lee (Shelby); her children, Melanie L. Norris Smith (Steve), Christopher S. Norris (Lesli) and Jennifer L. Norris (Bray Johnson); stepchildren, Kimberly H. Hudson (Charlie), Bryant D. Haskins (Leslie); grandchildren, Kara Hudson, Madeline Smith, Ian Norris, Jakob Haskins, Colby Haskins and Lane Johnson; brothers and sisters, Debbie L. Hegarty (Charlie), Cliff G. Lee (Tracy and Keitland) and Mark Lee (Christina); nieces and nephews, Ray and Kristie Wilson and son Hayden, Michael and Allison Hegarty, Katie and Michael Jones and children J.J. and Ashley, Olivia Lee; aunts, Betty Andrews (Sam), Cleo Barbour, Chrystelle (Chris) Gower (Joe). He was a retired employee of Pulaski Furniture Corp. and a member of the Trinity Baptist Church. Bruna Ossi

Bruna Fiorent' Ossi NORFOLK - Bruna Fiorent' Ossi was born in 1930 in Trieste, Italy, and departed this life after a battle with pancreatic cancer on Saturday, May 29, 2010 in her Norfolk home surrounded by her loving family. A memorial service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, on the corner of Princess Anne and Blow streets, on Friday, June 4. The family will be receiving visitors at 1 p.m. at the church, and the service will follow at 2 p.m. The widow of the late Erminio Ossi, Bruna is survived by her two sons and their families, Massimo and his wife Sarah Jane Gaskill and their daughter Francesca of Bloomington, Ind., and Alessandro and his wife Cordelia and their two sons Nicholas and Thomas of Norfolk. Her sister, Franca Marchesi, and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, nephews, nieces, and their families, live in Italy. Erminio, Bruna, and their children were relocated from Rome, Italy, to Norfolk in 1970 by MMM Design Group. Bruna quickly became sought after as an Italian teacher and established an Italian group that has continued to meet once a week for the last 30 years. In her teaching career, she held adjunct faculty positions at Old Dominion University and taught Italian through NATO. She continued to give private lessons in her home until November 2009. Bruna also owned and operated two very successful Italian eateries in the Ghent section of Norfolk. The first, Roma 83, with her dear friend Antonietta Merlo, delighted patrons with gourmet take out from the fanciful Boissevain Avenue location. Trattoria Roma later offered bistro-style dining and enjoyed a devoted clientele. Among her greatest joys were cooking, her family, her friends and students, the Chrysler Museum, the Virginia Opera, and the Feldman Chamber Music Society. The family gratefully acknowledges the dedication and generosity of Ann Festa, R.N., and of the hospice nurses and aides who assisted in caring for Bruna during the months prior to her passing. In lieu of flowers, Bruna had requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society .

Carl Edward Farris CHILHOWIE, Va. Carl Edward Farris, 72, passed away Sunday, May 30, 2010, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born May 24, 1938, in Washington County, Va., and was a son of the late Fred W. and Roxie Jane Scott Farris. He was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and received his master's degree from Radford University. He taught school for 32 years and retired from Holston High School. Carl was a Lion's Club member since '73 and had received several distinguished service awards. He also received an award in '86 from Washington County Chamber for outstanding service to the field of education. He was a member of Chilhowie United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Farris. Survivors are his wife of 48 years, Virginia Farris; a son, Michael Farris of Chilhowie; and daughter, Karen Farris of Meadowview, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2010, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. David St. Clair and Rev. Scott Spence officiating. Cecil Earl Witt, 71, of Bedford, Va., passed away Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital surrounded by family and friends. He was born on Monday, February 6, 1939 in Bedford County, a son of the late James Daniel "Seay" Witt and Marie Hodges Witt. He was also preceded in death by a niece, Janet Wilson and a nephew, David Sexton, Jr. He was an employee of Frank Chervan with forty-eight years service, a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and a veteran of the United States Army. He was also a member of the Thaxton Youth & Community Center Council for nearly thirty years. Cecil was an avid NASCAR fan, especially of Richard Petty and Petty Enterprises. Surviving is his wife, Shirley Brown Witt; a daughter, J. Alison Witt of Bedford; a brother, James S. Witt; four sisters, Yvonne W. Wilson, Viola W. Collins and husband, Bobby, Patty W. Inge, Pauline W. Sexton and husband, David; two sisters-in-law, June Crouch, Linda Overstreet; two brothers-in-law, Thomas Rawlings, Johnny Brown; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and several greatnieces and nephews that he adored. Cecil Morton

Cecil Morton Cecil Morton, a Christian, loving husband and father, devoted worker, and trust ed friend, went home to be with his Lord, Saturday, May 29, 2010, at his residence, following a brief illness. He was born Dec. 16, 1941, in Carter County, to the late Henry Morton and the late Irene Morton Nave; and stepfather, J.C. Nave. Cecil was best friends with and loving husband to his wife of 48 years, Linda Goodman Morton. Cecil and Linda loved just spending time together, whether they were working, travelling, or spending time with family and friends. Cecil is also survived by a loving son, Shane Morton, who greatly loved his dad and stood by his side during his illness. Cecil also had one granddaughter, Holly, who he adored. Cecil attended Heritage Baptist Church, Johnson City. While living in Jefferson City, Tenn., he was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and leader of the Royal Ambassadors. Cecil was a hard worker, having worked in the Concrete and Pipe Industry for over 50 years. He served 16 years as assistant plant superintendant at Old Hickory Concrete and Pipe in Johnson City; 14 years as plant manager at Knoxville Concrete and Pipe; and, most recently, served 20 years as plant superintendant at Perma-Tile in Bristol Virginia. Cecil was a father-figure to many of the men who worked for him, and was a friend to many. He was a very honest and giving person; he gave so much to others, and never expected anything in return. Cecil was always anxious for Spring, because he loved putting out a garden and going fishing. But the thing Cecil loved the most was his family. Cecil's Heavenly homecoming was shared with his sister, Monnie Williams, who died a few hours before him. In addition to his parents, and stepfather, Cecil was preceded in death by three brothers; and one other sister, Leonard Morton, Orlie Morton, Darrell Nave, and Charlotte Street. Cecil is also survived by six sisters and two brothers, Louise Ingram, Carolyn (Buster) Lyons, Ruthie (Terry) Lovelace, and Charles (Becky) Morton, of Elizabethton, Ivalee (Ted) Beamer, of West Virginia, Marion Hulse, of Jonesborough, Joyce (John) Norman, of Johnson City, and James Nave, of Erwin. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Cecil Morton will be held at Heritage Baptist Church, 1512 John Exum Parkway, Johnson City, Wednesday, June 2, at 7 p.m. Dr. Reggie Weems and Rev. Eric Godfrey will officiate. Music will be provided by Robb Cates, Angie Grigsby, and Kenn Hecht. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral, from 5-7 p.m. or any time at the home of Bob and Wanda May, 2703 Steven Drive, Johnson City. Elizabeth Anne LeDoux

Elizabeth Anne Elizabeth (Betty) Anne LeDoux, 84, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Betty was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 31, 1926 to the late Nathan John and Eula Hess Eicher. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey LeDoux., She graduated from West High School in 1943. Her family moved to Long Beach, California in 1945 when her father was employed by an aircraft defense plant. Betty worked at the Naval Shipyard in Long Beach as a clerk typist. She met her future husband John on a blind date in November 1947. John was a Navy officer on the USS Astoria CL90 that was home ported in Long Beach. They were married on May 8, 1948 in Long Beach. During her husband's Navy career the family moved many times during his 24 years in the Navy. In one nine year period, the family moved eight times coast to coast. Their eight children were born in California, Virginia, New York and Tennessee. After retiring from the Navy in 1967 they remained in the Northern Virginia area where John worked for several companies. In 1973 they moved to Boulder, Colorado where her husband was associated with the University of Colorado. They returned to Virginia in 1976 when John joined the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In 1982 they moved to Blacksburg where her husband was an Associate Professor of Engineering. During this time Betty was active in their church, Triedstone Christian Center where for several years she taught the children's super church. She then led the intercessory women's prayer group until 2002., As the mother of eight, the grandmother of eleven and the great-grandmother of nine, she has been an inspiration and advisor to her children and grandchildren and a model of what a mother and wife should be. She was esteemed and loved by all who knew who her. She is survived by her husband, John C. LeDoux; four daughters, Janelle Anderson and husband, Robert, Christiansburg, Judith LeDoux, Raleigh, N.C., Jean LeDoux, Hawaii, Joyce Carter, Marshall, Va.; three sons, John LeDoux and wife, Chick, Bristow, Va., James LeDoux, Sacramento, Calif., Joseph LeDoux and wife, Debra, Decatur, Ga.; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren., Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 3 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Vince Guerra officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. A native of Gwynns Island, Va., she was the daughter of the late Earl and Belle Rawlings and the widow of Charles Vincent Wilkinson. Tizzie was a rare treasure; how blessed we were to have her in our lives. She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth W. Ricks and husband Gary of Virginia Beach and Rebecca W. Kanipe and husband Marty of Richmond; three grandchildren, Noel Ricks and wife Amy, and Lauren and Blake Kanipe; and two great-grandchildren, Christian and Dylan Ricks. Frances Moose Jennings

Frances (Frankie) Moose Jennings, 90, of Roanoke, Va., passed away Thursday evening, May 27, 2010. She was born in Greensboro, N.C. on December 25, 1919, to Lillian and Frank Moose and moved to Roanoke when her father opened Frank L. Moose Jeweler. Frankie graduated from Mary Baldwin College and earned a Master's Degree in French and English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Married to Harold Frederick Jennings (Hal) on January 13, 1945, they settled in Roanoke when he joined her father's jewelry business. She taught French in Salem and Roanoke City Schools before helping to found Eton School. As the Eaton School merged with North Cross, Frankie taught French there until 1969. In 1971, the Frank L. Moose Bridal Shop opened and she became the manager and was recognized in 1982 as Mother of the Year for business and professions. Frankie was active with many volunteer organizations including the Roanoke Valley Garden Club, the Children's Community Theatre, the Roanoke Youth Symphony and St. John's Episcopal Church. She also served as president of the Junior League of the Roanoke Valley. One of her fondest memories was traveling to Tyler, Texas in October 1941 when Virginia Governor Price appointed her to represent the state in the Rose Festival., A three-time cancer survivor, she was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Hal Jennings and granddaughter, Jennifer. Survivors include two sons, Geoffrey Jennings and wife, Susan and Rick Jennings and wife, Brenda. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Ryan Snow and husband, Gabe, Melissa Lunsford and husband, Chad, Rob Jennings, Ashley McLeod and husband, Geoff and Coles Jennings; two great-grandsons, Phoenix Lunsford and Blake Jennings., The family wishes to thank her wonderful caregivers: Jean Cooley, Brenda Condrey, Lisa Harrison, Dolores Helms, and Mary Dillon; and appreciates the support of her special friends at Pheasant Ridge and Gentle Shepherd Hospice., Memorials in honor of Mrs. Jennings life may be made to North Cross School (Gordon C. Fred Junior Salyer BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. Fred Junior Salyer went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Satur day, May 29, 2010, at Holston Valley Hospital after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born on Sept. 12, 1937, in Scott County, Va., and lived in Bristol Virginia, and Blountville for the last 48 years. He was retired from Atmos Gas and was a member of New Hurland Baptist Church in Hiltons, Va. He loved the Lord and was testifying and praising the Lord to the day the Lord called him home. He was preceded in death by his dad and mom who raised him, Roy Lee and Grace Salyer; his biological mother, Myrtle Salyer; son, Timothy D. Salyer; and his half-brother, Jack. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Ethel Jacobs Salyer; his children, Darlene Taylor and husband Dan, Darrell Salyer and wife Christine, Blountville, Randall Salyer and Pamela Christian, Kingsport, Tenn., Lori Whitaker, Mattie Feathers and husband Michael, Blountville; special son, Dennis Dunford and wife Joyce, Bristol Virginia; his grandchildren, Kenneth Taylor and wife Jennifer, Blountville, Elizabeth Lane, Kingsport, Daniel Salyer, Megan Salyer, Dylan Whitaker and Emily Feathers, all of Blountville; four great- grandchildren; his biological father, Milburn Salyer; his sister, Lois Worley, Bristol Tennessee; his brother, Kyle Horne, Dungannon, Va.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nephews, nieces, friends and family to numerous to list. Hazel Evangeline Mawyer, 80, of Charlottesville, died Friday, May 28, 2010, at her home., She was the wife of the late Dover Gene Mawyer., Born on August 19, 1929, in Red Hill, Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late Leighton M. and Evelyn Phillips Mawyer., She is survived by two sons, Gary Dale Mawyer and his wife, Karen, and Alan Stuart Mawyer; three sisters, Loraine Mawyer, Kay Mawyer and Cecile Rucker; and one brother, Clyde Mawyer; four grandchildren, Alexander Mawyer and his wife, Kirsten, Edward Mawyer and his wife, Kara, Daniel Mawyer, and Lara Mawyer and her fiance, Justin Ravenscroft; and two great-grandchildren, Pohakea Mawyer and Sydney Levine., She was preceded in death by her brother, Ralph Mawyer., Hazel died after a long and determined struggle with illness. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had an enormous influence on her children's, grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's lives. Her sunny personality, great humor and abiding faith will be long remembered., Funeral services will be conducted 12 p.m. Tuesday June 1, 2010, at the Teague Chapel with Reverend Jeffrey T. Helen Kouzi NORFOLK - Helen Kouzi passed away in her home Sunday evening after a long illness. She was the widow of Christos Kouzi, a local restaurateur, and the mother of Tina, Chrissy and Anthony of Norfolk. She was the daughter of the late Chrissy and Christos Diorides and a granddaughter of Helen and Anthony Kolantis. Survivors include two brothers, Anthony of Sarasota, Fla., and Michael Diorides of Norfolk; a brother-in- law, Michael Kouzi of Melbourne, Australia; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A native of Morphou, Cyprus, she lived most of her life in Norfolk. She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Norfolk and was active in its community organizations. She was a member of the Philophtochos Society and the Hellenic Woman's Club for more than 50 years. She was known for her uncommon dignity and her kindness and concern for others. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3, at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral by the Very Rev. Ambrose Bowers and the Rev. Father Constantine P. Rogakos. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk. A prayer service will be held at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel, Wednesday at 6 p.m. The family will receive visitors following the prayer service and immediately after the interment at the Cathedral social hall. Helen Irene Hurley Marshall BRISTOL, Va. Helen Irene Hurley Marshall, 98, beloved mother of Nancy M. Brantley of Greenville, S.C., and Kathleen M. Boothe of Gastonia, N.C., died on May 21, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mamie Belle Brown Hurley; three brothers, Harry, Herman, and Ernest Hurley; and one sister, Margaret Mays. Helen was a graduate of Virginia High School and Bristol Commercial College. She worked as a bookkeeper for Dunn & Bradstreet and Mary Grey Hosiery. Her life was a testimony to others as she truly lived her Christian faith. She enjoyed and spent many years teaching in the children's department in Sunday school at North Bristol Baptist Church. She belonged to the Senior Citizen Center where she loved participating in various activities including the Senior Citizen Traveling Choir. In addition to her daughters, survivors include three brothers, Charles Hurley of Blountville, Tenn., Carl Hurley of Raleigh, N.C., and Landon Hurley of Columbia, S.C.; one sister, Gladys Yardley of Durham, N.C.; five grandchildren, Beth Feith of Dyersburg, Tenn., Will Brantley of Auburn, Ala., Jennifer Restine of Greenville, S.C., Michelle Rhodes of Atlanta, and Angela Jones of Nashville, Tenn.; special friends, Edna Riley, Sue White, Pat Arnold, Betty Carden, Carol Simmons, and Jean Hiller; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The committal service and inurnment will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, June 5, 2010, at East Hill Cemetery with Rev. John Markel of Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church officiating. Lavada Bartley Goldberg NORFOLK - Lavada Bartley Goldberg, 87, passed away at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on May 30, 2010. Born in Tarboro, N.C., to the late William and Lavinia Bartley, Lavada moved to Roanoke Rapids, N.C., where she lived with her parents and brother, Lewis D. Bartley (of blessed memory). As a young woman, Lavada moved to Norfolk to attend school. This is where she met the love of her life, Murray Goldberg (of blessed memory). They married and enjoyed life owning and operating, The Jewel Box, a jewelry store in downtown Norfolk, that was in operation for 54 years. Lavada is survived by her daughter, Ronda Goldberg Bazar and her husband Gerald of Virginia Beach; two grandsons, Jason of New York City and Darin of Dillon, Colo., brought great joy to her life. Her joy multiplied when Jason married Dee Ann and Darin married Azalea. Lavada is also survived by her loving half sister, Sharon Whitmore, who was like a daughter to her. She has a half brother, Kevin Bartley and two other half sisters, Regenia Smith and Betty Dunlow. Lavada's longtime membership at Ohef Sholom Temple inspired her to fulfill her deep faith in Judaism. The family would like to thank all the residents and staff of the Harbor's Edge Senior Community for contributing to the wonderful life she has enjoyed during these past few years. A special thanks goes to the caring medical staff and doctors who showed such compassion at Harbor's Edge. BYLUND, Linton David, 90, of Bon Air, died May 26, 2010. He was born May 30, 1919 in Springfield, Mass. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gloria Wise Bylund; his daughter, Lisa Bylund King and her husband, Christian, of St. Paul, Minn.; his son, Eric Bylund of Richmond; two grandchildren, Ian and Bryn King of St. Paul, Minn.; and his sister, Ruth B. Asbell of Muncie, Ind. Mr. Bylund received a BS in chemical engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1943, where he also was elected to the engineering honorary fraternity, Tau Beta Pi. In 1975, the University awarded him the title of "Distinguished Alumnus." Mr. Bylund served as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II. Lin's life calling was metallurgical engineering, and he worked for Reynolds Metals Company for over 37 years. While there, he held multiple significant patents in aluminum products, including the patented one-piece beverage can and numerous patented alloys for use in the manufacture of aluminum foils. He retired as Director of Metallurgical Engineering Development in 1984. Mr. Bylund joined the Unitarian Church of Richmond in 1953 and was Chairman of the Property Committee at the Floyd Avenue church and then on the Architectural Committee for the building of the new church on Blanton Ave. The congregation elected him to the Executive Board of the church for several different terms. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at First Unitarian Universalist Church. Louise Stilwell Mosher, 84, of Bedford, died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born in Altamont, New York on October 14, 1925, a daughter of the late Burnette Stilwell and Augustine Senecal Stilwell. In addition to her parents, Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Myron Henry Mosher. Louise was a member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church. She was a retired Registered Nurse with the Phoenixville, Pennsylvania Hospital. She was also a founding member of the Alzheimer's support group of Bedford. She loved flowers, enjoyed listening to birds, playing with her pets and most of all, spending time with her family and friends. Lucille was very supportive and enjoyed working with the Rich Valley Fair, volunteering at the Smyth County Community Hospital, Smyth County Social Services and the Northwood Middle School. Martha Ann Clark Peterson, 88, of Roanoke, Va., died Thursday, May 27, 2010. She was born in Rocky Mount, N.C. in 1921 and grew up in Orlando, Fla., but she said her life did not really begin until she married a young major she met at a dance during World War II, and together they raised their family. Surviving are their children, Ann Orem, Tom Peterson (Shelley), Jane Wheeler (Skip), John Peterson (Nancy), and David Peterson; grandchildren, Alison Dolan, Katie Hnath (Austin), David Spencer (Kate), Mary Kirk Peterson; greatgrandchildren, Annie Dolan and Emme Hnath. Also surviving are her sister, Mary Conry; brother-in-law, John Peterson and sister-in-law, Anna Young. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Thomas Dolan Peterson; sister, Jo Caldwell; brother, Jack Clark; and her parents, Charles Clark and Mary Clark Perry. Martha Ann took an active part in the community as a Girl Scout Leader, as a member of various boards, including Roanoke Symphony, Roanoke Opera Society, Great Books, St. John's Knitters, South Hill Garden Club, American Symphony Volunteer Council, and her bridge group, the Ding-a-Lings. A voracious reader herself, her favorite writers were Liza Field, Bill Wheeler, and Mary Bishop. Her favorite movie was "Jewel in the Crown". Memorials may be made to St. John's and Hospice. Mary Madeline (Sam) Barksdale Rutledge, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 29, 2010, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Jesse F. Rutledge; son-in-law, Billy Shelor; and great-grandson, Ryan Shelor. Leaving behind to cherish her memory are her children, Pat R. Shelor, of Salem, Carole R. Brown and husband, Jim, of Sweetwater, Tenn., Jesse D. Rutledge, of Knoxville, Tenn., Bill Rutledge and wife, Vicki, Michael Rutledge and wife, Nancy, Terry Rutledge, Roger Rutledge and wife, Melissa, and Cary Rutledge, all of Roanoke; also 17 grandchildren; 30 greatgrandchildren; and 5 greatgreat-grandchildren. She loved her family. Nothing made her happier than to have a house full of children of all ages coming and going. She loved the out of doors, whether it be planting a garden, planting flowers or just neatening up nature. She had a passion for bowling and was inducted to the Roanoke Bowling Hall of Fame in 1992. She was one of the premier lady bowlers in the Roanoke Valley during the 1970's and 1980's. She remained active, bowling in two leagues until just before her passing. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include her husband of 74 years, R.J. Whited of the home; one daughter, Nancy Whited Thomas of Atlanta; one son, Robert E. Whited, M.D. and wife, Sharon of St. Simmons, Ga.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren also survive. He was born September 10, 1947 to the late Nathaniel and Evelyn Williams Sr. He served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. Newton E. Gresham VIRGINIA BEACH - Newton E. Gresham, 77, died May 21, 2010 after a long illness at a nursing facility in Virginia Beach. Mr. Gresham, son of the late Newton Ernest and Helen Gresham, was born and grew up in eastern North Carolina and spent several of those years in Jacksonville, N.C. He lived his adult life in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. He was a business graduate of the College of William and Mary in Norfolk and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His earliest career position was an accountant with the Portsmouth Gas Company. Later, he served as regional administrative manager of Nissan Motor Corporation's regional headquarters in Portsmouth until his retirement. Mr. Gresham was a good swimmer and an avid scuba diver and enjoyed the opportunities the Tidewater area offered in underwater exploration. He also traveled to other parts of the world to pursue his diving interest. Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Phyllis Hicks Gresham; a daughter, Casey Gordy; a granddaughter, Mona, all of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Elva Leighton of McLean, Va., and Ina Murrell of Swansboro, N.C.; a brother, Robert Gresham of Fort Valley, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Ray H. Whitehead VIRGINIA BEACH - Ray Hope Whitehead, 75, died at his home Friday, May 28, 2010. A native of Virginia Beach, he was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Lucille McClannon Whitehead. Known as one of the original "Virginia Beach Boys" and a key figure at the Oceanfront, he was president of Tourist Haven Hotel, built and managed the Carriage Inn, Sea Gull Hotel, and the 14th Street Mall. He also owned and managed the former Laskin Seafood Restaurant. An expert in "local history," he was often sought to settle disputes about property ownership or locations of Virginia Beach businesses. He also helped many young entrepreneurs establish themselves in the Virginia Beach business scene. He spent many happy times at his cottage on the Outer Banks. Retired for many years, he would frequently quip that he was "working at the Ford plant putting a gallon of gas in every car coming off the line." He loved life and the beach but most of all he loved his wife and children. He will be greatly missed by us all. He is survived by his wife, Milly Whitehead; children, Dana and Chris Whitehead; stepchildren, Ashley Schroeder and Scot Anders; and grandchildren, Savannah and Brittany Talbert, Ben and Rachel Schroeder. He also had many dear friends and business partners, including Chester Rodio (deceased), Moose Amdusky, and Billy Vasile. A memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday, June 2, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Maestas Chapel, 1801 Baltic Ave., Virginia Beach, with the Rev. Ernest Trueblood officiating. Robert Alvin Whitehorne, Robert A. "Al" Whitehorne, 84, formerly of Williamsburg, died on Thursday, May 6, 2010, from complications of Alzheimer's Disease., A memorial service will be held at Williamsburg United Methodist Church 2 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 2010, with a reception following., Mr Whitehorne was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, on June 20, 1925, to the late Stanford L. and Ruth Speight Whitehorne. He was preceded in death by his brother, Stan., He is survived by Margaret Kirby Whitehorne, his high school sweetheart and wife of 62 years; a brother, Charles and his wife, Dolores, of Ocala, Florida; daughter, Lynn Sacco and her husband, Michael, of Vienna, Virginia; a son, Robert Whitehorne and his wife, Carolyn, of Grand Junction, Colorado; daughter, Cynthia Moore and her husband, Bill, of Charlottesville; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Emily, Melissa, Bryan, Julia, and Colin; and great- grandchildren, Madilyn and Sienna., Mr. Whitehorne graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, Portsmouth in 1942. After serving with the United States Marines during the war, he earned a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering at Virginia Tech in 1946. He had a successful career as an engineer and business executive at IBM, Michelin and The Sperry and Hutchinson Corporation. After leaving the business world in 1979, he joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina Graduate Business School as Lecturer and career counselor. In 1985, he became Senior Lecturer and Director of Business Relations at the College of William and Mary. Al and Margaret resided in Williamsburg for 22 years prior to moving to Charlottesville in 2008., Mr. Whitehorne was an active member of Williamsburg United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities and teaching Sunday school., He loved tennis and golf, investing, American history and politics, and most of all spending time with loved ones. Virginia Calloway, 70, of Bedford, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born on Monday, October 23, 1939 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Paul Calloway and Lorene Irvin Calloway. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul Calloway, Jr. She was a retired teacher's aide with Bedford County Public School and was a member of Bold Branch Baptist Church. Surviving are her sisters, Irene Calloway, Beatrice Calloway Poindexter, both of Bedford; three nephews, William L. Poindexter and wife, Janet, Barry L. Calloway and wife, Deborah, Wayne Poindexter and wife, Tracey; three nieces, Norma Jean Crawford, Warnell C. Robinson, Patricia Ann Calloway; as well as many beloved great-nieces and nephews. HANCOCK, Dr. William Cary, 89, of Richmond, Va., died May 22, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris Glenn Hancock; a daughter, Cary Hancock Easterly; two sons, William Glenn Hancock and John Beverly Hancock II; a sister- in-law, Patsy Glenn Rhodes; a niece, Conway Flournoy Hancock; a nephew, William Rogers Moseley; a son-in-law, Frank Blanton Easterly; two daughters-in- law, Christie Colby Hancock and Austin Cary Hancock; nine grandchildren, William Claiborne Hancock, James Cole Hancock, Caroline Carter Hancock, Robert Augustine Cary Hancock, Charles Fairfax Cary Hancock, Doris Glenn Richards, Emily Cole Easterly, Harry Watkey Easterly II, and Callie Jeanette Hancock; and two great-grandchildren, Scarlett Gregory Richards and Riley Glenn Richards. He was preceded in death by his brothers, John Beverly Hancock Jr. and James Patteson Hancock; and his sister, Edith Hancock Moseley. Dr. Hancock was born in Richmond, Va., to Edith Dennis Hancock and John Beverly Hancock. He graduated from St. Christopher's School and Tulane University and earned his M.D. from The Medical College of Virginia. While at St. Christopher's he started, captained and played number one singles for the State High School Champion Tennis Team. He also played for the legendary coach, Benny Paret, at Tulane. Dr. Hancock and his friend, local tennis legend Bobby Leitch, played on a tennis court they built together. Dr. Hancock was his family's sole surviving son in WWII, having lost his brother, Jim, in the Pacific. He served as a Commander in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. With Doris, his beloved wife of 65 years, they raised, trained and showed championship collies, hunter jumpers and thoroughbred race horses. Their collies, April Hill's Ringleader and April Hill's Miss Venture, won at Madison Square Garden. Their Anglo-Arab horse, Antar, was Reserve National Champion at the National Arabian Horse Show. Their thoroughbreds won over 100 races at tracks like Pimlico, Laurel, Penn National, Delaware Park and Charles Town. Dr. Hancock was an early Director of the Virginia Thoroughbred Racing Association. Dr. Hancock was an avid golfer, winning both the CCV and Palm Beach Polo Two Ball Championships, scoring seven holes in one and shooting his age several times. Dr. Hancock also played violin and clarinet. Dr. Hancock was a prominent family physician, beloved by his patients. After 40 years of private practice in south Richmond, he served as Medical Director for Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company until it was sold in 1995. He had also served as the Team Doctor for The Richmond Braves and Channel 12. A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Hollywood Cemetery. Walter Martin Lipes

Walter Martin Lipes, 92, formerly of Salem, Va., died on Friday, May 28, 2010. Born on November 26, 1917, to the late Henry Grady Lipes and Lena Lake Lafon Lipes, Walter and his family were from the Sinking Creek area of Craig County. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1936 and went to work for Valleydale Meatpackers. In 1946, he founded Green Hill Sausage and Meat Packing Company and it became a thriving industry in Elliston, Va. During his years in the meat packing industry, he served on the Virginia Independent Meatpackers Board of Directors and as the President. He was also a part of NIMPA, the National Independent Meatpackers Association and served on the Board of Directors and as the National President., He was a charter member of Hidden Valley Country Club serving on the first Grounds Committee. He walked the course with Sam Snead helping to lay out the fairways, sand traps, greens, etc. At one time, he served as the President of Hidden Valley Country Club. He was also a member of the Roanoke Country Club and the Shenandoah Club. He was a member and Deacon of Salem Presbyterian Church and a long time member of the Salem Rotary Club where he was recognized for his attendance record. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Farmers National Bank and as a member and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of First Virginia Bank of Southwest for many years. He was elected to the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors and served as Chairman for several terms. He considered the Salem-Roanoke County Civic Center as one of his greatest achievements. The other significant achievement was his role in Salem becoming a City. He was politically active in the community and the State of Virginia. The City of Salem recently honored him by declaring July 13, 2009, as the Walter Martin Lipes Day., Walter Lipes was predeceased by his sons, Walter Martin Lipes Jr. and William Norris Lipes. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Lipes, of Tennessee; daughter, Judy L. Garst and husband, Reid; and daughter-in-law, Sandra B. Lipes, of Salem, Va. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Reid A. Garst II, Charles E. Garst, Walter M. Lipes III, Deborah Lipes White, Julie Lipes Shires, William N. Lipes II, John S. Warren Cobb Jr.

Warren W. Cobb Jr. NORFOLK - Warren W. Cobb Jr. passed away at his home Friday, May 28, 2010 at the age of 86. Warren was born June 25, 1923 in Paris, Ky., to the late Warren W. Cobb Sr. and Thelma Payne Cobb. Mr. Cobb attended the Citadel and then received an appointment to West Point from which he graduated in 1945. He was a member of the occupational forces in Japan and left the service as a first lieutenant. Working with his father's marine construction company brought the family to Norfolk, building piers at NOB and Little Creek Amphibious Base. Their vision of Little Creek prompted them to build Cobb's Marina. Warren Jr. operated the facility from its opening in 1958 with his wife, and later his children. He spent his life dedicated to nurturing his family and his legacy. Mr. Cobb is survived by his daughters, Peggy Cobb Duval and husband Jim, Nancy Cobb and husband Ralph Crowder and his son John W. Cobb and wife Julie; and his sister, Mary Dix of Illinois. He has nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Wiley Cobb. A celebration of his life will be held at Cobb's Marina in Norfolk on Sunday, June 6, between 6 and 8 p.m. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Watson Hillsman (Watt) Ellett, 89, a lifelong resident of Roanoke, Va., passed away May 31, 2010. He served with the U.S. Army under General Patton's Third Army in Europe and retired from the Army Reserves after 20 years of service. Watt was with the Norfolk & Western Railway for 40 years, retiring from the Accounting Department in 1981. He was active in basketball, bowling, quail hunting and his favorite, golf. Watt was a member of Roanoke Country Club and Second Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus P. Ellett, his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph K. Baker, brother, Dr. Rufus P. Ellett, Jr., brothers-in-law, Joseph W. Smith, O. Wayne Harper and Robert H. Kulp. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Kathryne (Sugar) Baker Ellett; son, Watson Hillsman Ellett, Jr.; daughter, Kathryne Anne Ellett; three grandchildren, Caroline Paige Ellett, Watson Hillsman Ellett, III and Dylan Massey Ellett; brother J. Albert (Ab) Ellett and wife, Koiner; sister Frances (Liggie) Ellett Smith; brother-in-law, Ralph K. Baker, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Lou B. Harper, Betty B. Kulp, Lee P. Baker, Linda M. Ellett; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Interment will be at the Columbarium, for the family, Second Presbyterian Church, 214 Mountain Avenue SW, Roanoke, Va. on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Gerald Carter and George Anderson officiating. He was a faithful employee at the VA Medical Center until he retired. Weathers served in the United States Army and receive a Honorable discharge. William Cox

COX, William Henry, M.D., 94, of Richmond, widower of Doris Swain Cox, passed away Friday, May 14, 2010. He is survived by three children, George Paul Cox, Nancy Cox Vaughan and her husband, Ernest C. Vaughan, and Susan Cox Lane and her husband, Feldman E. Lane, and five grandchildren, Christian Epps Vaughan, William Ernest Vaughan, Charles Harwood Vaughan, Hillary Cox Lane, and Amy Bennett Lane. Born in Franklin, Va., Dr. Cox was a 1935 graduate of Suffolk High School. He graduated from VMI, class of 1939, and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia and served in the Army Medical Corps and was discharged as Captain. Dr. Cox was board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. During World War II, he delivered countless babies while stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, Ft. Belvoir, Va., City Hospital in Baltimore, and Women's Hospital in Boston. Dr. Cox practiced OBGYN in Richmond for 30 years and during that time was Chief of Staff and Head of the Obstetrics Department at Richmond Memorial Hospital. He also had privileges at Retreat for the Sick, St. Mary's, St. Luke's, and Stuart Circle Hospital, where he delivered three generations of Richmond children. Throughout his career, he volunteered weekly at the Goochland Health Clinic. Dr. Cox was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church for over 50 years, a charter member of Suburban Sertoma Club and the Institute Society of VMI, a former member of the Board of Maymont, and a former member of The Country Club of Virginia and Deep Run Hunt Club. He was an avid horseman, fisherman, and hunter. Dr. Cox enjoyed traveling the world with his beloved wife, Doris. During his later years, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their river home in Tappahannock. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 11 at Westminster Canterbury. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 6000 Grove Ave., Richmond, Va. 23226, the VMI Foundation, or the Goochland County Nursing Scholarship, c/o Goochland High School.

Wilma MCINTOSH

She is survived by her husband, Clarence McIntosh of 63 years; son, Roger J. McIntosh; daughter-in-law, Debbie McIntosh; grandchild, Meredith McIntosh Bell; brother, Leon Metcalf; sister, Zale Rice; and numerous nieces and nephews.
