SACRA, Alfred "Al" Conway, 81, of Hopewell, died Thursday, June 10, 2010 in Southside Regional Medical Center. Mr. Sacra was born in Richmond, Va. and had made his home in the tri-city area for most of his life. Al served his country with pride from 1951 to 1953, having served in Korea from 1952 to 1953. He was a 1947-graduate of Hopewell High School and was a lifelong Blue Devil Fan. Al was a member of Woodman of the World Beech Camp #264 and served the City of Hopewell as a representative on the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority. Al worked over 38 years for Allied Signal Corporation, now known as Honeywell, where he retired in 1992 as a unit supervisor. Many young friends and family also knew him as "a jolly old elf." Al was a very active and dedicated member of First Baptist Church where through the years he served as a youth leader, a Sunday school teacher, and an usher. He was also an ordained deacon and member of "The Singing Saints," served on the Shut-in Ministry Team, and was also part of the "Stew Crew." Al was preceded in death by his parents, Willard James Sacra Sr. and Ida W. Sacra, and sisters, Elsie Hendricks, Gladys Myers, and Virginia Boyette. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bonnie Hudson Sacra; two sons, Mark D. Sacra and his wife, Nora, of Chesterfield, Va. and Chad R. Sacra and his wife, Barbara, of Roanoke, Va.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Granddaddy will be missed by all who knew and loved him. The family will receive friends Friday, June 11, 2010 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 12 noon in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Raymond officiating. SMITH, Mrs. Alice Taylor, of Richmond, departed this life on Thursday, May 27, 2010 in a local hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Herbert Taylor Sr.; and son, James H. "Buddy" Taylor Jr. She is survived by her four daughters, Hazel B. Monroe (Rudolph) of Temple Hill, Md., Annie B. Williams (James), Mary T. Henley (most loyal and devoted) and Alice T. Woolridge, all of Richmond; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, twins, Rev. Lydia Bishop and Rev. Sydney Shipman of Saginaw, Mich. and Marietta Taylor of New York, N.Y.; one brother, James Taylor Henley; three nieces, among them, Jean Vaughan and Margaret Brown (Walter), three nephews; and a host of relatives, friends and caring and loving neighbors. Alma R. Lacy PORTSMOUTH - Alma R. Lacy died peacefully June 3, 2010 at Lillian's Loving Care in Portsmouth. Born in South Carolina on Jan. 15, 1917, she was the adopted daughter of John and Susie Reaser. Alma graduated from Cradock High School and lived most of her life in the Portsmouth area. She was the widow of Clifford Lacy. Alma and Clifford were world travelers having crossed the Sahara Desert, traveled the Amazon, ridden on the Trans-Siberian Railway, heli-hopped in Canada, and viewed the hot springs of Iceland and Ayers Rock in Australia. Alma loved to tell of her many adventures. Alma's daily companions were her four turtles she had rescued from highway death. "I'm an animal lover," she often said. She loved her two churches, Berea Christian and Beech Grove Methodist, both in Driver. She participated in the women's groups and enjoyed helping make chocolate Easter eggs. Alma had many loving friends and neighbors who will miss her. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, June 13, at 2 p.m. at Berea Christian Church with Pastor Benn Fleming officiating. Benjamin L. Barry NORFOLK - Benjamin "Benny" L. Barry, 80, passed away in his home June 9, 2010. Born in Norfolk, May 3, 1930, he was the son of the late William and Pauline Barry. Benny was predeceased by his siblings, Betty Siedel, Marjorie Staley, Billy Barry, and Carole Flowers. Benny was a member of the Ocean View Democratic Club, the VFW, the American Legion, and the Ocean View Seniors Golf Association. He served in the U.S. Air Force. Benny was a popular local boxer in the 40's and was well known as the "Flaming Redheaded South Paw" from Ocean View. Charles W. Hayes NORFOLK - Charles Williams Hayes, 90, died Tuesday, June 8, 2010 in Norfolk. Born Aug. 14, 1919 in Edwenwold, Tenn., he was the son of the late William Hayes and Icey Octavia Hayes. He joined the Navy at the age of 17, serving for 30 years in the Pacific at Pearl Harbor, Europe and Africa. During the 1950s he served at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. His last shipboard command was upon the USS Enterprise. Among his many medals were the Armed Forces Expeditionary medal and Bronze stars. He retired at the rank of lieutenant training officer at COMSERVLANT, Norfolk. He enjoyed a 20-year career in real estate as the owner of Hayes Realty. He was a member of Wards Corner Civic League, Wards Corner Lions Club, American Legion Post No. 327, Owens Masonic Lodge No. 164, Scottish Rite, and the Khedive Shrine Temple. He was also a member of the GRICE Commandery No. 16 Knights Templar. He was preceded in death by his dear wife of 45 years, Lossie Mae Hayes; sisters, Frances Hayes Simpson of Portsmouth, Nina Hayes Pietrzak of San Diego; brothers, Dan Hayes of High Point, N.C., Monroe Hayes of Smyrna, Tenn., and Guy Hayes of Nashville, Tenn. Claude Thomas Worley Jr. ABINGDON, Va. Claude Thomas Worley Jr., age 69, a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., passed away Monday, June 7, 2010, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn. He was born on June 4, 1941, in Washington County, Va., a son of the late Claude Thomas Worley Sr. and Bertha Lee Harrison Worley. He was both a U.S. Navy and Army veteran. He served on the USS Essex (CVS9) from June 30, 1962, until July 5, 1966, as an Aviation Ordanceman 3rd Class P.O. where he also worked on the flight deck and hanger deck. He served at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Nat. R.I. from Dec. 26, 1963, until Jan. 13, 1964. Mr. Worley was retired from Bristol Compressors and attended One Way Ministries in Damascus, Va. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers. Young and Lauren J. Thompson, of Vinton; and the stepdaughter of J. Everett Young, of Vinton. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Ralph W. Craig, of Vinton; and her two sons, Scott W. Craig and wife, Sandra, of Langhorne, Pa., and Major Aaron R. Craig, USMC and wife, Lynn, of Toronto, Ontario. Eva leaves three grandchildren, Ryan W. Craig, of Langhorne, Allison N. Craig, of Langhorne, and Cooper R. Craig, of Toronto. Eva is also survived by her sister, Lorene T. Johnson and former husband, Milton, of Roanoke; and her nephew, Larry E. Moore, of Roanoke. Eva was preceded in death by her twin sister, Reba Thompson, of Roanoke; and her niece, Linda G. Miller, of Salem. Eva was born in Roanoke and went to high school at William Byrd, graduating in 1955. She attended business trade school and worked for Allstate Insurance before starting a family. Eva and her family also lived in Lynchburg for 18 years before returning to the Roanoke area in 1985. She was an active member of the Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton. Eva requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Roanoke Rescue Mission (, ) or the, ). Frank G. Addonizio Frank G. Addonizio, adored husband, father, father-in law, grandfather, great -grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at the age of 88., Frank was born on July 15, 1921, in Newark, New Jersey. He graduated from Irvington High School where he was a three sport athlete. He married his high school sweetheart, Marie Cecere, in 1942., Frank, a lifelong proud American, enlisted in the United States Army and began his service to his country in 1942. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War., After his military career, he continued his family's business as a butcher until he returned to government service in the CID and as an Industrial Security Specialist. Frank retired in 1977 from his last assignment as Chief of Industrial Security after 30 years of government services during which time he travelled the world. After retirement from government service, he became Security and Safety Manager World Wide at ITT Federal Electric Corporation, retiring in 1987., Frank lived in Irvington, New Jersey, before relocating to Middletown, New Jersey, in 1955, where he was an active citizen, community volunteer and faithful communicant at St. Anthony's Church. In 2000, Frank moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where his engaging personality, appreciation of beauty in all forms and generosity of spirit quickly made him a well known fixture in the community. He loved spending time at local sporting events and the Senior Center where he was notorious for his poker playing skills. He will always be remembered for the sparkle in his eye, his warm smile and his inspirational positive attitude., He served over the years as Scoutmaster Troop 140 Middletown, Judge Advocate, VFW Red Bank, President of the North Shore Beach Club League, was Board Member and President of Shady Oaks Condominium Association, Inc. He was also certified as a CPP (Certified Protection Professional) and certified by the Red Cross as a Swim Meet Official. He was a member of CID (Criminal Investigation Division) Association and ASIS (American Society Industrial Security). In 1967, he was awarded United States Government Meritorious Civilian Service Award and Medal., Frank was pre-deceased by his wife of 53 years, Marie; his parents, Mary and Virgilio; and his siblings, Marie, Roslyn and Pat., He is survived by his son, James of Jackson Township, New Jersey; daughter, Diane, and her husband, Howie Long, of Charlottesville, Virginia; three brothers, Ralph of Forked River, New Jersey, James of Pensacola, Florida, and George of Somerville, New Jersey; and one sister, Jeyne Bubet of Basking Ridge, New Jersey., Frank lives on through his five grandchildren, Chris, Kyle and Howie Long, Jennifer and Nicole Addonizio; and one great -grandson, James Addonizio. She was born Nov. 20, 1930, a daughter to the late Milton Thomas Kennedy and Della Lou Weatherly Kennedy. She had lived in the Bristol area for the past 30 years and was previously employed as a secretary for Abingdon Baptist Church. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. Survivors: son, Michael L. Pendergrass; grandson, Chase M. Pendergrass; nephews, Robert Kennedy, James Kennedy, David Kennedy, Bill Kennedy; nieces, Joyce Ann Burns, Nancy Blacklock; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Jones, Shirley Gross and husband Jim. Ida Mae Ivey Parker NORFOLK - Ida Mae Ivey Parker, 88, passed away June 9, 2010 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Born in Norfolk to Henry Bernard Ivey and Ruth Branch Ivey, she grew up in the Lafayette area of Norfolk and graduated from Maury High School. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had many friends and was noted for her artistic ability for decorating, especially creating something from nothing. She was predeceased by a brother, Henry Bernard Ivey Jr.; a sister, Susan Ivey Wheeler and a daughter, Cathy Parker Warden. She is survived by a daughter, Ann Parker Donohoe and son-in-law Keith W. Donohoe of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Julie Warden Bailey, Jason Philip Warden and Adam Patrick Warden; and two great-grandchildren, Sean and Matthew Bailey. LAWSON, Joseph Cecil Sr., 82, of Culpeper, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at his residence on Wednesday, June 9, 2010. He was born December 21, 1927 in Powhatan, Va., to the late Oliver Cecil and Etta Jessup Lawson. Mr. Lawson was a member of Culpeper Baptist Church as well as a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and State Police Alumni. He retired in 1991 from the Virginia State Police after 36 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lawson; his children, Jojuan White and her husband, Joe, of Culpeper, Judy Norris and her husband, Robert, of Mitchells, Jackie Heberle and her husband, Andy, of Powhatan, Joseph "Jay" Lawson Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, of Ruckersville; two stepdaughters, Suzanne Tharin and her husband, Ted, of Midlothian, Mary Beth Hutchison and her husband, Todd, of Midlothian; and one stepson, Garfield Lawson and his wife, Kristy, of Mechanicsville. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Alma Pace Wade; his parents, Ethelbert and Ruby M. Wade; a brother, Boyd E. Wade Sr.; and a sister, Peggy W. Flick., He is survived by his son, Lindsay M. Harrington and his wife, Debbie, of Punta Gorda, Florida; three daughters, Lynda H. He often bragged that he had transported the grandchildren of children he had driven to school many years ago. He was a member of Cherry Avenue Christian Church for 50 years and led a Christian life. He loved visiting with family, friends and neighbors and making new friends was easy for him. To know him was to know a kind and gentle man. MORRIS, Colonel Leonard C. "Skeets," USAF Reserve, Retired, September 24, 1914 to June 9, 2010. Skeets Morris passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, June 9. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Born in Malvern, Arkansas, son of Ben and Mamie Morris, he lived most of his life in Richmond, Virginia. Skeets had a decorated military career. He was Lead Bombardier on B24s in WWII, completing 25 missions. For the bombing of Kiel, Morris and his crew received the Presidential citation. He was honored by a full military review upon his return from combat, receiving an oak leaf cluster for the Distinguished Flying Cross awarded him for combat over Germany. For most of his 95 years, Skeets brought happiness to many people with his music and song. He once played for the Gene Autry Tent Show. For over 60 years, he and his Skeets Morris Orchestra entertained audiences around Richmond and across Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Frances; children, Terry Morris, Lynnette Morris Hoosier and husband, Merle, Charlotte Gregg Morgan and husband, John, and Victor Gregg; sisters-in-law, Helen A. Smith and Ella S. Terry; grandchildren, Melissa Loughridge Savenko, Jaison Morgan and wife, Molly, William Gregg Loughridge, Tiffany Morris, Kelly Rose Morris, and Miranda Morgan; and great-grandchildren, Sasha Savenko, Coco Morgan and Bodhi Morgan. He was preceded in death by son, James Michael Gregg. BYLUND, Linton David, 90, of Bon Air, died May 26, 2010. He was born May 30, 1919 in Springfield, Mass. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gloria Wise Bylund; his daughter, Lisa Bylund King and her husband, Christian, of St. Paul, Minn.; his son, Eric Bylund of Richmond; two grandchildren, Ian and Bryn King of St. Paul, Minn.; and his sister, Ruth B. Asbell of Muncie, Ind. Mr. Bylund received a BS in chemical engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1943, where he also was elected to the engineering honorary fraternity, Tau Beta Pi. In 1975, the University awarded him the title of "Distinguished Alumnus." Mr. Bylund served as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II. Lin's life calling was metallurgical engineering, and he worked for Reynolds Metals Company for over 37 years. While there, he held multiple significant patents in aluminum products, including the patented one-piece beverage can and numerous patented alloys for use in the manufacture of aluminum foils. He retired as Director of Metallurgical Engineering Development in 1984. Mr. Bylund joined the Unitarian Church of Richmond in 1953 and was Chairman of the Property Committee at the Floyd Avenue church and then on the Architectural Committee for the building of the new church on Blanton Ave. The congregation elected him to the Executive Board of the church for several different terms. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at First Unitarian Universalist Church. She was born May 8, 1926, in Martinsville to Mary Catherine Martin and Christopher Columbus Martin. Louis T. Collins Sr. NORFOLK - Louis T. "Rip" Collins Sr. passed away June 1, 2010 at Sentara Leigh Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of William McKinley Collins and Edith Virginia Collins. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty M. Collins; daughters, Pat Jump, Andrea Collins, Deborah Collins, Betty Stevenson and husband Richard; sons, Louis Collins Jr. and fiancée Vanessa McRoy, Bill Collins and wife Madeline; grandchildren, Allison Jump, Christopher Jump, Raymon Jump, Jennifer Myers, Elizabeth Stevenson and fiancé Joel Hills, Melissa Stevenson, Patrick Stevenson, Regina Hemsath, Raven Jennings, Charles Collins, Jack Collins, Andrew Collins; and great-grandchildren CJ and Tyler Jump. He is also survived by his sisters, Grace Lester, Katie Jo Gardner, Ann Mann; and his brothers, Clarence "Skippy" Collins and the Rev. Patrick Collins. Lou joined the Army at 17 and served in the 101st Airborne Division. During World War II, he jumped in Normandy on D-Day and later in Holland, and took part in the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne. A retired local businessman, Lou owned and operated family tree service companies for 40 years, most recently Bowman Hallmark Guardian Tree Service. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. June 19, at Wesley Memorial Church, 288 E. Little Creek Road, Norfolk. Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family. Mable Ruth Williams HERTFORD - Mable Ruth Sims Williams, 72, of the 100 block of Micmac Trail, Snug Harbor, Hertford, died Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A native of Wilkes Barre, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Mable Sims and John Balleck. She was married to Donald R. Williams of the residence. Mrs. Williams was a member of the Snug Harbor Community Church and the Snug Harbor Civic League. She was among the first group of teacher assistants to be hired in the Virginia Beach School System. Surviving Mrs. Williams, other than her husband, are two daughters, Marian W. Slantis and her husband Jim of Stafford, Va., and Susan W. Devers and her husband Jim of Memphis, Tenn.; one sister, Joyce Anderson; four grandchildren, Philip and Heather Slantis, Amber Vuurman and Jimmy Devers; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Ken Anderson and a sister, Anne Whitesell. A celebration of her life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at the Snug Harbor Community Church. Marilyn Florac, Marilyn Florac died peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 9, 2010., She will be greatly missed and her memory will continue as a source of unconditional love and dedication for all of her family., Marilyn was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on September 22, 1929. She earned her RN from Iowa State Teaching College in 1951, and in the same year married the love of her life, Bill., She served as a hospital nurse in Lansing, Michigan, while her husband attended college at Michigan State University. Shortly thereafter, she and her husband moved to Mid-Hudson Valley region in New York, where she patiently applied her talents doctoring scraped knees and guiding the minds of five daughters and one son. After Marilyn's children were grown, she was the inspiring force behind the family business, MB Farms, for which she hybridized, grew, and distributed miniature roses across the nation. In 1990, she and her husband retired to Charlottesville, Virginia, to enjoy time with their many grandchildren., Above all else, Marilyn treasured her family and yet maintained wide and varied interests. She was wealth of knowledge about birds, gardening, botany, flower arrangements, literature, weather, health, and childrearing. She was a poet of light verse whose poems revealed her observations of people and life that reflected a soft sentiment or a twist of humor and sarcasm. She enjoyed the everyday and found warm pleasure in the sighting of a hummingbird or the warm companionship of her dog Sparky, who always brought a smile to her face., She delighted in her grandchildren and great- grandchildren and continuously restocked her home with children's books, toys, puzzles-anything that might tickle the fancy of "the kids." She was the ultimate grandma earning the nickname of "Grandma M&M" for the constant stock of M&Ms she kept for outstretched hands., Marilyn is survived by her loving husband for 59 years, William A. Florac; her six children, Mary Jo Babcock, Janice Cerchiara, Nancy Letteri, Bill Florac, Laura Pflugfelder, and Stephanie Luciano; 13 grandchildren, five great- grandchildren, and one more great-grandchild soon to arrive., Her mother and father, Beatrice and Russell Stewart; and her two brothers, Dean and William Stewart, preceded her in death., A funeral service will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010, at Ivy Creek United Methodist Church. Jun 11, 2010 The funeral for Martha Joyce Webster Thompson, 97, of Country Living Adult Care, Martinsville, who died June 9, 2010, at the adult care center, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour before the service Saturday at the funeral home. She was born Sept. 17, 1912, in Price, N.C., to Fletcher and Anna Lester Joyce. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Everette Webster; her second husband, Lester Walter Thompson Sr.; two sisters, Tennie J. Lawrence and Lynn J. Plyburn; and three brothers, Jim Joyce, Johnny Joyce and Tommy Joyce. She retired from Pannill Knitting, where she was a seamstress. She was a charter member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Cora Lee Bible Class. Norlito G. Salazar DURHAM - Norlito G. Salazar, 67, died Monday, June 7, 2010 at Duke University Hospital after a long battle with leukemia. He leaves his loving wife of 47 years, Gloria (Sy) Salazar; his daughters, Marina S. Dengate and Laura S. Lawton; his grandchildren, Steven Salazar, Jacob Green, Kristen Dengate, Brandon Johnston, Naomi Johnston, and Riley Lawton; and his sister, Leticia Salazar of the Philippines. Born and raised in Castillejos, Zambales, Philippines, the son of Severino Salazar and Maria (DeGuzman) Salazar, he was a longtime resident of Virginia Beach. In his early years, Mr. Salazar dreamed of being in the United States military. He fulfilled his dream and retired as a chief petty officer from the United States Navy in 1985, after nearly 23 years of valiant service. He then worked for the federal government for 20 years in weapons stock control in Virginia. In his spare time, Mr. Salazar was a part-time DJ and had a lifelong passion for music and dancing with his wife. He was also a licensed HAM radio operator, helping families communicate with their service members while they served overseas. The visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today, June 11, at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh. Robert B. Jones Sr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Capt. Robert B. Jones Sr., 87, passed away June 9, 2010 at his residence. He was born in Denver, on Oct. 26, 1922. Mr. Jones entered the Merchant Marines during World War II, and continued his career retiring as a captain. After retiring from the Merchant Marines, he worked for the National Cargo Bureau from which he also retired. Mr. Jones was a member of the Masters, Mates and Pilots organization. LASSETER, Robert L. III, age 65, of Powhatan, went to be with the Lord June 9, 2010. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. Lasseter Jr.; and a grandson, Zachary Wilkinson. He is survived by his wife, Deborah; two children, Stacey Mitchell and her husband, Jim, Robert L. Lasseter IV and his wife, Sara; three stepchildren, Vicki Tompkins and her husband, Darrell, Eddie McDaniel, Tracy Ramos and her husband, Jason; seven grandchildren, Quinton, Richie, Katelyn, Jacob, Logan, Chase and Dylan; his mother, Louise Taylor; mother-in-law, Shirley Baugh; a sister, Marie Walker and her husband, Kenny; a brother, Charles Taylor Jr.; and two nephews, Kenny and Charles. Mr. Lasseter was retired from Reynolds Metals after 30 years of service and was also a United States Marine Corps veteran. His remains rest at Bliley's - Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday. Roy J. Snyder CHESAPEAKE - Roy James Snyder of Chesapeake died June 9, 2010 at home. Born Oct. 23, 1918 in Reading, Pa., he was the son of Augustus and Estella Snyder. A faithful and loving husband, he is survived by Margaret, his wife of 64 years; a daughter, Jane Ann Snyder of Chesapeake; son, James "Rudi" Snyder and his wife Cecelia of Hackettstown, N.J.; daughter, Suzanne Snyder Pereske and her husband Alan of Saranac Lake, N.Y.; granddaughters, Jessica and Lisa of New Jersey; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Snyder served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He acknowledged every Jan. 11, the date he enlisted, as if it was a holiday. He was truly a member of "The Greatest Generation." A graduate of Kent State University and the University of Georgia, Mr. Snyder was a professor of mathematics and history and taught at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake, N.Y., until his retirement in 1986. He came out of retirement briefly to teach at Lafayette High School in Williamsburg and at Thomas Nelson Community College. He and his wife enjoyed their retirement in the Williamsburg and York County area of Virginia, living in the heart of American history. Dear Dad, you are our one and only true hero. Steven H. Sykes NORFOLK - Steven H. Sykes, 72, of the 5600 block of Tidewater Drive, passed away June 7, 2010. Steve proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard, before accepting a position with the U.S. government as a sheet metal mechanic, from which he eventually retired. He was a history buff with main interests in the American Revolutionary War, in which he participated in many reenactments over the years. He welcomed into his home any child in the need of love and TLC. He was often seen during the holiday season ringing the bells for the Salvation Army and caught many times with a twinkle in his eye as The Jolly Old Elf himself. He was a wonderful husband, loving father and powerful influence to many. He was loved by all that knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Gloria; his five children, Chris (Sharlene) Sykes, Jennifer (Johnny) Miller, Deborah Carignan, Bob (Doris) Rice, and Brandon (Danielle) Curry; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dolores Fleischer and Patricia Fountain. There will be a memorial service today, June 11, at 3 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army Angel Tree Fund. After graduating from North Carolina State, she received her Masters in Psychology from East Carolina University. She was a school psychologist in Harnett County, North Carolina, Long Beach, California, and for the past 10 years with Hollymead and Sutherland Schools in Albemarle County. She loved her animals, working in the yard, a good glass of wine, and her "Wolfpack." Most importantly, she loved the 20 years she spent with the love of her life, Bo!! Walter C. Ganey CHESAPEAKE - Walter Carl Ganey, 90, went to be with his Lord and Savior June 9, 2010. Born in Wilmington, N.C., Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Carrie Ganey; son, Carl Ganey; grandson, Tommy Roe; and two loving sisters. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Geneva Justice Ganey; three loving daughters, Jackie Madrigal and husband Bobby, Cindy Horton and husband Robert, Sandy Tester and husband Gary; son, Bobby Lewis; seven grandchildren, Jackie Delk, Paul Madrigal, Jeff Crowe, Kimberly Crowe, Traci Ratanataya, Chad Tester and Katie Lewis; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Walter attended CC Camp in California and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Westhaven Baptist Church, 56-year member of Washington-Lafayette Lodge No. 176 and a retired boilermaker of Local 45 out of Richmond. Daddy loved their Nags Head cottage, fishing with family, especially his grandchildren, and his many days on the golf course. The family wishes to thank his caregiver, Barbara Byrd, the staff of Sentara Health Care, hospice and his physical therapist, Kim. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, June 14, at Westhaven Baptist Church, 4900 Caroline Ave., Portsmouth, with Pastors Traci Powers and Larry Ryals presiding. William E. (Bill) Jackson, 61, of Roanoke, Va., died on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, in a tragic house fire with his beloved dog, Nakita. Bill was born on September 5, 1948, in Detroit, Mich., and was the son of the late Denny and Grace Largen Jackson. He served three tours of duty in Vietnam with the United States Army Special Forces where he received the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and Vietnam Service Medal with four bronze stars. Bill retired after 36 years with the VA Medical Center. He was past commander of DAV Chapter #3, VFW Post #4318, and the DAV Honor Guard. Bill was a past member of American Legion Post #3, AMVETS, and was a "Golden Rodent" in the Trench Rats. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Opeline Shepherd; and is survived by his wife, Diane; daughters and son-in-law, Jenny (Donnie) Deeds and Teresa Brown, all of Roanoke; six grandchildren, Drew Deeds, Daytona, Mercedes, Taylor, Charlie, and Hailey; nephew, Phil Shepherd; the Brotherhood; and many, many friends. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2010, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road with Pastor Brian Gordon officiating. He was born in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., the son of the late Lucy Turner Daniel and Sanford Powell Daniel. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force during the Berlin Airlift in World War II. Yvonne was known for her quick wit, her dedication to youth, church, Hampton High School basketball and later Hampton University. Yvonne or "Mama Six," as she was known to many young basketball players, could be found on the sideline with her rosary in hand when her team was struggling. There were many times that her Hail Mary's lifted her team to victory. |
