Cheryl Cooke

Cheryl Ann Cooke CHESAPEAKE - Cheryl was born in Norfolk and considered Chesapeake her home. She spent most of her working career as a bartender in the Hampton Roads area. She never met a stranger and made everybody feel like family. She did not always have the easiest life. But she faced every hardship that came her way with amazing strength and an incredible sense of humor. Cheryl's greatest joys in life were her children and grandchildren. She leaves behind her son, James E. Bent and his wife Rhonda and their children, Jonathan, Brittany, Jesse James and his son, Jesse James Jr., all of Chesapeake; her daughter, Tracy Espinosa and her husband Bryan Espinosa and their son, Jäger who reside in Virginia Beach; her son, Michael Newton and his longtime girlfriend Shara Krause (a daughter-in-law in Cheryl's eyes) and their children Troy, Olivia and Savannah who reside in Houston, Texas.; and her youngest son, William "Billy" E. Newton Jr. who resides in Kingsport, Tenn., and always had the biggest piece of mom's heart. We love you mama. We miss your beautiful smile and your wonderful laugh. We promise to continue to make you proud of us. Cheryl has two sisters, Veronica Connell of New Bloomfield, Mo., and Margaret Lynn Lackey of Ashland, Mo. They, along with their families, are heart-broken. Cheryl, Tracy and Jäger spent time with their Missouri family last summer. We are all very grateful for that vacation and will cherish those memories forever. Cheryl also leaves behind her husband, Doug Cooke of Mount Pilot, N.C. He and her family stayed by her side till her very last breath. Mom's spirit keeps us connected and we wish him peace and comfort. Her death leaves us saddened and she will be greatly missed by family, friends and all her children's friends who called her "mom." Lets try to take comfort in the fact that we were so loved by such a lovely woman. Cheryl's wishes were to be cremated and no sad services be held. Animals were her passion, so please donate to the ASPCA in her honor. Mother "There are so many things I want to say that it's hard to know where to start. I want this poem to reach out to you and settle in your heart. The effect you have had on my life could never really be measured and the memories that we shared together will always be cherished and treasured. I remember you working your hands to the bone to ensure your babies were fed. I remember we never really had a lot but we always had a roof and a bed. You were the center of my world and you made me who I am. Through your wisdom, sacrifice and guidance I've become a better man. Your friendship never falters and your kindness is always true. You wear your heart on your sleeve in everything you do. When I feel the walls closing in, I close my eyes and picture your smile. The gentle warmth and strength that it beings carries me that extra mile. It's important to me that you know just how important that you are. If it were in my power I would give to you the moon and all the stars. Now that I am grown and have a family of my own, I pray that I can give to them the love that I have known. Your selfless generosity and unconditional love can be heard in your laughter, felt in your touch, like light from heaven above. I'm proud of the family you have given me, my sister and my brothers. But most of all I'm just proud to call a woman like you my mother." By Mike Newton.
