Dr. Link graduated first in his class from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. He was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society and Psi Omega Fraternity. He practiced dentistry in Newport News for 50 years before retiring. Some of that time he practiced with his son and son-in-law. He also served as the dentist for the Newport News Shipyard from 1955 to 1972. |

Alma S. Ashley CHESAPEAKE - Alma Sawyer Ashley, 90, passed away on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 in a Charlottesville Hospital. Alma was born July 30, 1919 in Old Norfolk County. She was the daughter of the late Nolan and Maude Davis Harris. Alma was a graduate of the University of Virginia and The College of William & Mary where she earned her master's degree. Alma had retired after many years of service as a teacher and later as a supervisor with the South Norfolk Public Schools. She is survived by her daughter, Alva Bryant of Chesapeake; her four grandchildren, R. Wayne Bell Jr., Shelly Sisco, James Brady III and Mariah Brady, all of Chesapeake. The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, June 18, in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Elbow Road, Chesapeake. The Rev. Charles L. Moseley will officiate. Arnold Lee "Pap" Dixon Sr. Arnold Lee "Pap" Dixon Sr., age 94, passed away June 16, 2010, at Wexford House in Kingsport, Tenn. Mr. Dixon was born Dec. 20, 1915. He was a native of Dante, Va., having spent most of his life in the Bristol and Tri-Cities area. He was a former employee with Virginia highway Department and Bassett's Dairy. He resided several years in Florida, where he owned and operated a Southland Corp. 7-11 Store, in Holly Hill. He retired and returned to Bristol in 1977. Mr. Dixon was of the Baptist faith. In his earlier years, he served as a church deacon, teacher and choir member. One of his fondest memories was being a 'back-up' singer for a quartet in Norton, Va. Preceding him in death was his loving wife, Lois Sutherland Dixon, in July 1976; and daughter, Marlene Neff, April 2009; his parents, Oscar and Mollie Sproles Dixon, formerly of Mendota, Va.; his brother, Z.L. and J.M. Dixon; and sister, Mrs. Frances Williams. Mr. Dixon is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Arnold Jr. and Cathy Walters Dixon of Blountville; his daughters and sons-in-law, Glenn and Eleanor Dixon White of Bristol Tennessee, and Henry and Wanda Dixon Lammers of Port Orange, Fla. Known affectionately as "Pappy" and "Papaw", he leaves 12 grandchildren and their spouses, Mary and Bill Hayes, Annie and Mike Rundell, Marlo and Kenny Kitch, Christy Neff, Rick and Theresa White, Ted and Teresa White, Tina and Adam Brown, Joe and Chrystina Lammers, David Lammers and special friends, DeAnna Fox, Darla and Ken Fadden, Charla and Johnny Taylor and Lee Dixon; and special friend, Mary Bledsoe. Mr. Dixon had numerous great- grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many, very special nieces and nephews. Betty Margaret Armbrister Boye BRISTOL, Va. Betty Margaret Armbrister Boye, 92, passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. A daughter of the late James and Bessie Armbrister, she was born on July 5, 1917, in Max Meadows, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Olin Boye; four brothers; and one sister. Mrs. Boye loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and served Him faithfully as a minister's wife and later as a Sunday school teacher, or in any other capacity that was needed. She was a member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church where she shared her talents and gifts with her fellow church members and the community through programs such as delivering Meals on Wheels well into her 80's. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother who will be missed by her family and all her dear friends. She was such an angel. She is survived by her son, Dr. Edward L. Boye and his wife Julia Purcell; daughters, Patricia Ann Gillenwater and Linda Sue Shafer and her husband Bob; grandchildren, Jonathan Boye and his wife Rachel, Jason Gillenwater and his wife Amanda, Kelly Gillenwater Price and her husband Doug, Sam Honeycutt and his girlfriend Jamie; great-granddaughters, Kayla and Alora Gillenwater, and Lauren, Evie and Audrey Boye. Ms. Bok Soon Park of Charlottesville, passed away on Friday, June 11, 2010, at her home after having a long and courageous fight against gastric cancer., She was born in Seoul, Korea in 1930. She received primary and secondary education in Korea which was followed by a college education in art., During the Korean War and afterwards, she served with the United States 8th Army as a recreational staff member until 1972, then immigrated to the United States of America. For the first few years, she worked at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia. She then worked for over 20 years at the Michie Publishing Company in Charlottesville., After retirement in 1998, she enjoyed her hobbies of piano playing, gardening, and particularly raising tropical birds. At some points, she had more than 10 birds, and was known to her friends and acquaintances as "a bird's lady"., She was a member of Charlottesville Korean Community Church., She is survived by a sister, Dr. Janet H. MATHERLY, Chris, 18, died Saturday, June 12, 2010 in Chesterfield, Va. Christopher Scott was born March 9, 1992 in Springfield, Mo. He loved his family, friends, music, and the colors black and red. He was goofy and a lot of fun. As he was giving in life, he is giving with his passing. Two organ recipients' lives have been changed forever because of Chris's gifts. In accordance with Chris's wishes, he was cremated. The family wants to thank all the emergency responders, the staff at VCU, and LifeNet for all their caring and expertise. Florence T. Fraser VIRGINIA BEACH - Florence T. Fraser, 86, went to be with the Lord June 16, 2010. She was born July 25, 1923 in Norfolk, the daughter of the late Harry and Edna Thomas. Florence loved to sew and travel, and was a member of the Eastern Star, Bayside Chapter. Children were very special to Florence and for more than 29 years, she drove a school bus in Virginia Beach and Yorktown for special needs children. She was devoted to her family and loved them deeply. Florence was preceded in death by her daughter, Hattie Rae Cullifer. Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 69 years, E. Otto Fraser of Virginia Beach; daughters, Harriett Laskin of Suffolk, Louise Forrest of Virginia Beach and Faye Behnke of Houston; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. GARRETT, Harry W. Jr., 74, died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at the Elks National Home. He was born in Burkeville, Va. on January 11, 1936 the son of the late Henry W. and Kate Cook Garrett. Harry held a B.A. and L.L.B. from the University of Richmond. Harry served as Bedford Commonwealth Attorney for 12 years. He attained the rank of advocate with American Board of Trial Advocates and was recognized by the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers in America. Harry served on Virginia State Bar Counsel. He was a charter member of the Blue Ridge Chitterling Club, a charter member of the Gobbler Club of Bedford, and a member of the Chitterling Club of America. He helped organized the first Loopers known as the Sweathogs and served as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves. Harry is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Mary Jean Simpson Garrett; his four sons, H. Walker Garrett III and wife, Erin, Carter B. Garrett and wife, Heather, J.R. Clay Garrett and wife, Tricia, and Thomas S. Garrett and wife, Sharon; and seven grandchildren, Foster, Tucker, Lucie, Bo, Scott, Jackson, and Abby. Harry loved life and lived it to the fullest. Jun 18, 2010 Henry Lee Staples, 75, of Stuart, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at his home. He was born Oct. 10, 1934, in Patrick County to John Jackson "Jack" Staples and Mary Rucker Staples. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, George Otis Staples, James "J.J." Staples and infant John Francis Staples. He had been a truck driver for 54 years. Surviving are three sisters, Ollie Mae Spencer of Martinsville, Lucy Moore of Stuart and Marjorie Nowlin of Patrick Springs. Jackie was president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 113 for seven years, and Girl State counselor for two years. She drove a school bus for the Virginia Beach Public Schools for 24 years and retired in 1990. Jackie is survived by her very loving husband and best friend, Kenneth Ray Melson Sr.; two children, Richard and Caroline Melson of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren, Jackie and Kenneth Robbins, whom she dearly loved. She was a legal secretary for many years in the Fifth Naval District Legal Office at the Norfolk Naval Base until her retirement in 1976. She was predeceased by her husband; her brother, Edwin Charles Burgess; and her sister, Carmen Burgess Olson. She is survived by two sons, Russell E. Martin of Norfolk and Roger L. Martin of Gloucester; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Janie E. Bowen, the daughter of Mrs. Virginia Brown Bowen and the Late Howard Wellman Bowen of Bellair, died suddenly on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at her Richmond, Virginia, home. She was born on December 8, 1953., She is survived by a brother, Arthur N. Bowen III and his wife, Jackie J. Bowen; a niece, Virginia R. Bowen; and a nephew, Palmer Sinclair Bowen., She is also survived by five cousins, James K. "Butch" Brown, David Brightberry Brown, Beverly Long, Peggy Kyle West, and Grant Larkin., She was the fifth State Tax Commissioner in the 79 year history of the department and its first woman commissioner. She was a Charlottesville native and a graduate of Albemarle High School. She served as a deputy secretary of finance in Governor Kaine's office after working for the tax department for 28 years before moving back to the department. The department employs 850 classified employees and has long been recognized as one of the better administrated tax systems in the country., She received a number of national awards and in 2005 she received a national award for leadership and service in state administration. Recently she was elected president of the Federation of Tax Administrators. DEAN, Jimmy Ray, 81, died suddenly, but peacefully, at his home on the James River in Varina, Va., on Sunday, June 13, 2010. Jimmy was born into poverty August 10, 1928 in Olton, Texas, and was predeceased by his mother, Ruth Taylor Dean; father, George Otto Dean; and brother, Don Taylor Dean. As a young man, Jimmy joined our nation's Armed Forces and while stationed at Bolling AFB in Washington, D.C., he began his musical career performing in nightclubs. Eventually, his talents took him to radio, television, writing songs and making records. After being discovered on local television, he starred in "The Jimmy Dean Show" on CBS and ABC-TV. In the 1960s and '70s, he went on to record many hit songs including "P.T. 109," "To A Sleeping Beauty," the perennial Mother's Day favorite, "IOU" and the self- penned, Grammy award-winning hit, "Big Bad John." Jimmy's career led him to regular performances in the casinos of Las Vegas and Reno, Nev., as well as the Hollywood Palace, The London Palladium and Carnegie Hall. As an actor, Jimmy portrayed Fess Parker's sidekick on "The Daniel Boone Show' in the 1960s and, in 1971, he starred with Sean Connery in the James Bond movie, "Diamonds Are Forever." Jimmy's investments included founding the most successful sausage company in America. In 1984, he sold Jimmy Dean Foods to the Sara Lee Corporation, but remained their company spokesperson for many years. Jimmy retired in 2001, but remained active in his community as a benefactor to local schools. He served on the board of Virginia's Game and Inland Fisheries, was a member of the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame, The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, and will be inducted posthumously, in October of this year, into The Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. Jimmy is survived by his wife of 18 years, Donna Meade Dean of Varina; daughter, Connie Dean Taylor of Mahwah, N.J.; sons, Garry T. Dean and wife, Yoon, of Stratford, Conn., and Robert R. Dean and wife, Jennifer, of Old Tappan, N.J. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Caroline S. Taylor and Brianna Rae Dean. Visitation will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home on Laburnum Avenue on Sunday, June 20, from 12 noon until 8 p.m., and a celebration of Jimmy's life will be held on Monday, June 21, at 11 a.m. at Grove Avenue Baptist Church. Maggie was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., grew up in Washington, D.C., and raised her family in Springfield, Va. She is survived by her husband, Howard C. Ligon; daughters, Allison Rea, married to Chris, and their two daughters, Rose and Lily, of Richmond, Va., Kerrie Metschan, married to Kent, and their two daughters, Layne and Mallory, of Austin, Texas; son, Andrew Ligon, married to Audrey, and their three children, Owen, Nora and Jesse, of Richmond, Va. Maggie was a devoted wife, incredible mother, grandmother and avid animal lover, especially her dogs. She found such joy in taking daily walks, reading a good book and was a dedicated runner most of her life. She enjoyed spending time with her family and celebrated life's little moments. Michael Connelly NORFOLK - Michael "Mike" Connelly passed away at home in Norfolk. He was born in Pittsburgh. He was predeceased by his mother, Jeanne Delehanty Connelly; and wife Kimberly Coles Connelly. He is survived by two sons, Michael J. Connelly and Ryan P. Connelly, both of Norfolk; his father, Joseph William Connelly and stepmom Katherine; two sisters, Janet and Tracy; one brother, Terry; and six stepsiblings all from Pittsburgh. He also leaves behind to cherish his memory his girlfriend, Dawn; as well as nieces and nephews and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Mike served 22 years in the Navy and was known as an infamous cook on and off submarines. He was employed at P&P Pawn Norfolk and loved fishing, NASCAR and football. ROMÃN, Natalynn Boykin, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 16, 2010. She was a graduate of Averett University and the University of Phoenix. Natalynn was the cofounder of Strategic Leadership Development Group (SLDG) in Chesterfield, Virginia. Natalynn courageously battled breast cancer and Chron's disease for several years. After her diagnosis, she sought to help other women who were struggling through a difficult regimen of radiation and chemotherapy. Natalynn started "My Hands for Hope," an eco-friendly residential cleaning company that provides free and discounted cleaning services to breast cancer patients. She was a member of Abner Baptist Church in Glen Allen, Virginia. Natalynn was predeceased by her parents, Deacon Melvin B. Boykin and Mrs. Edna W. Boykin. He was also an Eagle Scout and an avid supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. Rob loved his family, friends, gardening, fishing, hunting and was an avid NASCAR race fan. He was Mark Martin's #1 fan. Rob always lived life to the fullest and was a very giving person. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. Robert D. Macioci SUFFOLK - Retired Master Sgt. Robert David Macioci of Suffolk and formerly of Lancaster, Ohio, passed away at his home June 16, 2010 surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with lung cancer. He was born April 20, 1942 to the late Sidney A. and Nell Macioci. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Robert D. "Bobby" Macioci Jr. He was a 20-year Air Force veteran having served in Vietnam. He was awarded a Bronze Star with V for Valor because of his heroism while under enemy fire. In addition to Vietnam, he served twice in Germany, Texas, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, and Minot, N.D. For most of his 20-year career, he was an aircraft maintenance superintendent. Following retirement, he moved back home to Lancaster and worked at what he knew best, automobile mechanic. Upon his father's retirement from Macioci's Garage, Robert took a small one man family business and expanded, improved, and served the Lancaster community with pride and honesty for 24 years, when in 2005 he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He then moved to Suffolk to be near his children and grandchildren. His passions in life were his work, his family, friends, and NASCAR. After years of attending races, he gave up the traveling and watched from his "NASCAR room," where he was surrounded by a massive collection of memorabilia, including an area for his all time favorite, "The King" Richard Petty. Robert is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jean Macioci; daughters and sons-in-law, Shelby and Buddy Derrick of Suffolk and Sharon and Ray Wroten of Gates, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Jennifer Macioci of Yorktown; sister, Carol Wears; brother, Larry Macioci both of Lancaster; grandchildren, Christopher Derrick, Jonathan Derrick and his wife Kelli, R.A. Shirley Helen Loundes PORTSMOUTH - It is with great sorrow that we report the passing of our beloved mom, grandmother and great-grandmother, Shirley Helen Loundes. She was born May 25, 1935 in Baltimore, Md. She died Sunday, June 13, 2010, at the age of 75 at her home in Portsmouth amongst family. She attended Norfolk State University, majoring in nursing education. She spent most of her professional life as a private duty nurse, a job in which she enjoyed. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was born Oct. 14, 1920, in Patrick County to Walter Jackson Foley and Minnie Alice Massey Foley. She was the widow of Monroe Edward Haynes Sr. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Kyle Foley, Coolidge Foley, Roy Foley, Robert Foley, Edgar Foley and Eldee Foley; and three sisters, Ether Shough, Era Wade and Bertha Marshall. She was been a member of New Hope Church of the Brethren for nearly 70 years, during which time she was a member of the Church Women's Fellowship, Ladies Aid Quilting Group, children's Sunday school teacher and vacation Bible school teacher. Kittrell was born Feb. 13, 1925, in Winterville, N.C., to Ollen and Retha Little Kittrell. Jun 18, 2010 The funeral for Zachary Alan Craddock, 22, of Martinsville, who died June 12, 2010, was held Thursday at Mountain View Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Harrison officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park. Pallbearers were Junior Gillispie, Jeremy Gillispie, Daniel Morrison, Randy Belcher, R.J. Ferguson, Trey Craddock, Terry Craddock, Danny Morrison, Daniel Parker, Jeffrey Parker, Chris Young, Chris Perales, Terrell Craddock and Carter Campbell. Bassett Funeral Service handled arrangements. |
