Allan Hugh McKinley NORFOLK - Allan Hugh McKinley, 86, of the 400 block of College Place, died Thursday, June 17, 2010, in his residence. He was a native of Paarl, South Africa, the son of the late Rev. Alan Robertson McKinley and Florence Edith Wells McKinley. He graduated with honors from Bowdoin College, Class of 1950, and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Mr. McKinley retired as director of corporate properties with State Farm Insurance Company after 26 years of employment. Called to active duty in 1943 during World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Navy as an aviator. He was a member of Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, Norfolk Boat Club, The Virginia Symphony Guild, Virginia Opera Guild, and the Chrysler Museum Masterpiece Society. Mr. McKinley was predeceased by his first wife, Joan Johnson McKinley; his brother, Gordon Wells McKinley; and sister, Marguerite Lothian Dulos. Survivors include his daughters, Carol McKinley Dudley and her husband Lee of Norfolk, Alison McKinley Goss and her husband Paul of Salinas, Calif.; his son, Andrew Robertson McKinley and wife Carmen of White Fish Bay, Wis.; and his sister, Ruth McKinley Mondt of Walnut, Calif. He was much loved and respected by the children of his present wife, Jean Ritter Winslow McKinley: William McClellan Ritter III and his wife Carol of Kitty Hawk, N.C., John Ernest Ritter and his wife Kim Hendricks of Houston, David Winslow Ritter of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, Mary Breese Ritter Spruill of Virginia Beach and Julian Emmett Winslow III of Charleston, S.C. Mr. McKinley is also survived by his grandchildren: Andrea Leigh McKinley, Allison Carole McKinley, Kacy Alys Ritter, Jason Perry Ritter, Kyle McClellan Spruill, Maxwell Ritter Spruill, Charlotte Leigh Spruill, Hannah Breese Spruill, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to offer special thanks to Mr. McKinley's loving caregivers Ruby Brown, Rita Lawson, Cora Holman and Ginny Gibbs, as well as the staff of Sentara Home Care/Hospice. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, in Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church followed by a reception in the Parish House. Interment will be in the church columbarium. Barbara Ellen Lane of Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away to her heavenly home on Friday evening, June 18, 2010., She was born in Hinton, West Virginia, where she met and married the love of her life. Their union spanned 62 years and was only briefly interrupted by his passing last year. What a heavenly reunion there must have been this Friday past., Her face in her later years was one wrinkled by a life time of smiles and laughter. She was well known by her friends and family for her quick wit and charm. She was always there to help celebrate accomplishment and ease the disappointment of failure. Her ear was always made available for those in need of a listener and her Christian love was available to help the healing. DAVIS, Charles Raymond Jr., 90 born February 11, 1920 in Elizabethtown, North Carolina, son of Charles Raymond Davis Sr. and Lillian Biggs Davis, died June 18, 2010 of age-related issues. Charles grew up in Elizabethtown, N.C. and moved to Richmond, Va. in 1937. He joined the Navy in 1943 and fought in World War II where he was a corpsman on beach battalion in five invasions in the South Pacific. After the war, he attended Richmond Professional Institute (now VCU) and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science. He taught in Henrico County for two years before working with Wyeth Laboratories as a hospital representative until 1961 when he returned to teaching as a science teacher at Tuckahoe Junior High and then as a chemistry teacher at Douglas S. Freeman High School in Henrico County. He received his Master's degree in Science Education in 1963 from the University of Virginia. He later became assistant science supervisor for the Virginia State Department of Education and finished his work career as science supervisor for Chesterfield County in 1985. During his career as an educator, he attended Davis and Elkins College, UC-Berkeley and the University of Maryland, College Park, in order to further his knowledge of science education. In 1987, he retired and moved to Reedville, Va., with his wife, Ada-Clarke Davis, where he was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Northumberland Preservation Inc., Chesapeake Bay Garden Club, the Historical Society of Northern Neck and the Northumberland Historical Society. He was an active volunteer in all of these until his health failed him. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ada-Clarke Nuckols Davis; a son, William Joseph Davis of Missoula, Montana; and a daughter, Simone d'Aubigne of Eugene, Oregon. He has two grandsons, Seth Christian Davis Swallen of White Salmon, Washington and Nathanial Dabney Davis Swallen of Eugene, Oregon. He will be remembered as a loving, gentle and strong husband, father, grandfather and friend. The family would like to thank all of their friends for the love and support given throughout the years, especially George and Linda Consolvo. They would also like to thank the home health care people who supplied so much love and support on a daily basis, Sherren Ball, Head Home Health Care Provider, Beanie Butler, Katie Ball, Blanche Thompson and Brenda Kenner. A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Kilmarnock, Va. Earl Francis Walker Earl Francis Walker of Keswick passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2010, surrounded by family members who loved him dearly., He was born on February 13, 1926, at Castle Hill, an estate in Albemarle County built originally in 1764 for famed explorer and physician, Dr. Thomas Walker. He was the son of the late Percy Franklin Walker and Dulcie Virginia Clasby Walker and the beloved husband for 59 years of Ruby Goodman Walker., In addition to his wife and a cherished son, Steven Earl Walker, he is survived by a grandson, Christopher Earl Walker and his wife, Sarah; two grandchildren, Tristan and Trinity; a brother, James W. Walker and his wife, Ruth; and two sisters, Helen W. Chisholm and her husband, Everett, and Myra Lee Sandridge and her husband, Don, who was also Earl's best friend. He also loved and appreciated his many nieces and nephews., He was predeceased by his sister, Hazel Walker Brown, wife of Kenneth L. Brown, who died on June 9, 2010., He received a bronze star medal for service during armed conflict in World War II with the 86th Infantry Division in the European Theater and also occupational duty in the Asian Theater. After the war, he returned to Albemarle County, married the love of his life, and went to work in sales at The W.J. Keller Company, a Main Street institution in the 1950s and early '60s, where he was an assistant manager of the business for many years for his employer and dear friend, Marianne Keller. Emmarene Brown VIRGINIA BEACH - Emmarene Brown, 98, passed away peacefully June 13, 2010. Born Dec. 22, 1911, she was the last surviving member of her family of three brothers and four sisters. A Mississippi farm girl, she grew up and married Bee Wilson and had two daughters. After his untimely death, she dedicated herself to raising the girls. She spent years in the Fort Benning, Ga. chapter of the Eastern Star. Among her many roles in the organization, she was also Worthy Matron. She later married Raymond F. Brown and lived happily until his death from cancer. She served also as a Gold Star Wife and remained in Columbus, Ga., until moving to Virginia Beach in 1994. She is survived by both her daughters, Ruth E. Thuston and Jo Ann McNair, son-in- law, retired General Carl H. McNair; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They will always remember the vitality, generosity and wisdom that enabled her to live by herself and on her own terms until very recently. Frank Joyner Boyce NORFOLK - Frank Joyner Boyce, 83, of Titusville, Fla., passed away June 12, 2010. Frank was born in Norfolk to parents, Julian G. Boyce and Minna K. Boyce. Frank and wife Barbara Burgess Boyce were married for 54 years and had three daughters. They are members of Mims United Methodist Church. Frank served his country in the U.S. Army and Navy before earning his degree in aeronautical engineering from Virginia Tech. He enjoyed a rewarding career that spanned four decades with McDonnell Douglas. In retirement, Frank had varied interests which included art and the Titusville Computer Club. His experience as a pilot led him to volunteer at the Valiant Air Command. Frank was preceded in death by his brothers, Julian G. Boyce Jr. and Richard M. Boyce, as well as his grandson, Christopher Boyce Widman. Frank is survived by wife Barbara, three daughters, Mrs. Laura Widman of Virginia Beach, Mrs. Dawn Moore of Springfield, Va., and Mrs. Diane Skelley of California, Md.; six grandchildren; and his sister, Henrietta B. Bell of Chesterfield, Va. Burial will be private and a memorial service will be held at a later date. |
Mr. Frank Dean, 97, of Roanoke, Va., passed from this life to enter into eternal rest on Thursday, June 17, 2010. He was born on May, 14, 1913, in Botetourt County, Va. He was the sixth child of 15 children born to the late John Minor and Delia Dean. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Crawley Dean; and son, Clarence (Fruit Cake) Dean. He retired from the Norfolk & Western Railroad after many years of service. Mr. Dean was a faithful member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church, of Cloverdale, Va. Harriette L. Dail HERTFORD - Harriette Lou Layden Dail, 82, of the 500 block of Edenton Road St., died Saturday, June 19, 2010, in her home. Mrs. Dail was born in Perquimans County and was the daughter of the late Clyde J. and Iola Mae Madre Dail. She attended both Louisburg College and East Carolina Teachers College before teaching in the Gates County school system and working with the former Hertford Banking Company. She then worked in the North Carolina judicial system, serving 28 years in the Perquimans County Clerk of Superior Court Office before retiring as an assistant clerk. A member of Hertford United Methodist Church, she was a faithful member of its Mary Martha Circle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Dail Mertz and her sister, Margaret Boyce Winslow. Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Broughton T. Dail Sr.; her son, B.T. Dail Jr. and wife Teresa of Hertford; four grandchildren, James R. Mertz III of The Bronx, N.Y., Tim L. Dail of Hattiesburg, Miss., Greg T. Dail and wife Heather of Tyner and Sara O. Dail of Hertford; a great- granddaughter, Adrienne V. BRICKER, Dr. John Brodie Jr., (Lt. Col. U.S. Air Force, Ret.), of Richmond and Callao, Virginia, passed away quietly on June 19, 2010 with his devoted wife, Gene, by his side. John was a WWII fighter pilot out of England with the "Mighty Eighth," and was recalled for the Korean Conflict. John was a podiatrist in Richmond, who, for a number of years shared the practice with his father and two brothers. In the years following his retirement, he spent time in Richmond and at his river home in Callao, which he truly loved and enjoyed the company of his friends. Josephine Camp, 92, of Richmond and formerly of Radford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Our Lady of Hope in Richmond Virginia. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Catherine Kriz of Blacksburg, Virginia. She is survived by her sister, Flora Heggem; by her children, Joan Coleman and her husband, Jim Coleman, her son, Thomas Camp and his wife, Margaret Murphey. She also had nine grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. Josie was born to hard working coal mining farmer Austrian immigrants, Frank Hocheder and Annie Gutfelder in Louisville, Colorado. During World War II she worked in Denver for the U.S. Geological Survey. She met her husband of 37 years, Thomas Camp, in Denver where they lived until they moved to Bluefield, West Virginia, then on to Radford, Virginia where they raised their family and lived for many years. Josie worked at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant then at Radford University where she retired at the age of 75 after 30 years of employment in the office of admissions. After retiring she enjoyed many years with her friends and being an important part of her family. A mass in her intention will be said at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Radford, Virginia on July 10, 2010 at 5 p.m. Family and friends will gather afterwards at the Best Western in Radford to celebrate her life and enjoy memories of her. Makoske COURTLAND - Kelly Paige Carpenito Makoske, 45, joined her beloved father, Pat Carpenito, in heaven following her long and courageous battle with cancer June 17, 2010 at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill, N.C. Born in Franklin, Kelly was a graduate of Southampton High School, received her associate's degree in business from Paul D. Camp Community College and was a realtor for William E. Wood and Associates. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Kelly's involvement in Cancer Relay for more than 10 years was a reflection of her loving and compassionate side. No one knew of her own constant daily struggle with cancer. She was a beautiful and giving person to all she knew and loved. Kelly brightened any room with her big smile, her signature laugh and kind words to everyone. She truly lived her life the way others could only dream. Lester V. Mitchell HUNTERSVILLE - Lester Voyette Mitchell, 86, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at the Levine and Dickson Hospice House. He was born Aug. 16, 1923 in Durham, N.C. His family moved to Wallace, N.C., where he graduated from high school in May 1941, entered the U.S. Navy in July 1941, and served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, retiring in 1967. He worked briefly as his church's administrative assistant prior to accepting a job at Norfolk General Hospital, working in housekeeping while learning administration. After four years, he accepted a job at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, administering to three departments and working for the surgeon general of the Navy implementing management programs. After his retirement in 1983, he and Lea traveled in their RV for a number of years. He was active in his church, serving in many capacities, was chaplain of his camping group, a Master Mason, Scottish Rite Mason and a Shrine Mason, being active in all three for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Haswell Jenkins. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lea Snipes Mitchell; a son, Daryl Mitchell and wife Marion of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Leslie Mitchell and her husband Adrian Pringle of Cornelius; a brother, Roy Jenkins of Durham; a sister, Frances Davis of Cheshire, Conn.; and grandchildren, Edward and Delaney. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 22, at 11 a.m. in the mausoleum chapel in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, with full honors provided by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. |

Lynn Ramsey BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. Lynn Ramsey, 76, died on Saturday, June 19, 2010, at James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, he was a son of the late Irby Leonard and Bertha Rhea Ramsey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Ramsey; and two sisters, Mary and Irene Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey was a U.S. Army veteran, had retired from Sperry/Univac, and enjoyed farming and raising cattle. He was a lifelong member of Blountville Presbyterian Church. He was a 50 year member of the M.M. Martin Lodge No. 547 F&AM of Piney Flats, a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite Temple of Knoxville, and a member of the York Rite in Bristol Tennessee and the Jericho Shrine Temple of Kingsport. Margery M. Canfield NORFOLK - Margery McCann Canfield, 91, passed away peacefully June 1, 2010 at her home. She was born May 1, 1919 in Midland, Mich. She graduated from the Kingswood School, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., (Class of 1938) and Pine Manor College, Wellesley, Mass (Class of 1940). She met and married the love of her life, the late William B. Canfield Jr., on March 13, 1943. After his untimely death in 1981, she courageously carried on and moved to Virginia Beach, from Grosse Pointe, Miss. She always treasured and was active in the Junior League of Detroit, the Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach, and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. She is survived by her two sons, William B. III (Paige) of Bethesda, Md., and Thomas F. (Milagros) of Hanover, N.H. She was fondly called "Mamma Marge" by her three grandchildren, Tom Jr., Anna, and Sumner. Her family including her niece and three nephews and many friends will remember her for her eternal youthfulness, zest for life and her devotion to family. She had a special gift for fashion and talent unrivaled for knitting. She will be especially missed by her caregiver, Ruth Swartzentruber, who also lovingly cared for her mother, Florence Broderick McCann. A memorial service in Virginia Beach will be held at Galilee Episcopal Church on Thursday, June 24, at 11 a.m. with another memorial service and interment to be held in Detroit at Elmwood Cemetery in August. Jun 20, 2010 Paul Linwood Doughton, 79, of Rocky Mount, died Saturday, June 19, 2010, at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Erie Doughton; wife, Margaret Babb Doughton; and son, Christopher Doughton. Doughton was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Marines. He was a member of Furnace Creek Baptist Church. Surviving are his daughters, Patricia Elliott of Dallas, Texas, Michelle Camp of Appomattox, Donna Doughton of Martinsville and Samone Doughton of Edenton, N.C.; son, Paul A. Doughton of Ferrum; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Charlie Doughton of Georgia; and sister, Edna Wallace of Florida. She is survived by her three children, Henry Bulifant IV and his wife, Suzanne, Carolyn West and her husband, Dennis West, and William "Billy" Bulifant; seven grandchildren, Fletcher Bulifant V, Daniel Bulifant, Brett Bulifant, Rosemary West, Ryne West, Cristina Bulifant and Skyla Bulifant; one great-granddaughter, Hayley Bulifant; her sister, Rosemary "Rosa" Thurston Mancha; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Allen, Lewis, Charlie, William "Buck," Arthur and Earl Thurston; and her sister, Audrey Thurston Langford. Born February 7, 1933 to Joseph S. and Mary Martin Thurston, she was raised in Oregon Hill and later relocated to Lakeside. She retired from AT&T after 20 years of service in 1995. She was a spiritual woman and was loved by all. Robert J. Radcliffe Sr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Robert James Radcliffe Sr., 82, passed away June 15, 2010 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Bob worked for 22 years in the civil service and was the carpenter shop foreman on Little Creek Amphibious Base when he retired. He was a volunteer firefighter with Ocean Park Volunteer Fire Department, Virginia Beach for 30 years and was honored to be the assistant chief fireman as well as the fire chief. Bob was also an avid member of local Boy Scout Troop No. 442, Virginia Beach where he served as assistant Scoutmaster. Bob was a nationally recognized wild fowl wood carver, and was a member of the Virginia Beach Carving Club. He was also a lifetime member of the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association. Robert was the widower of Shirley Scott Radcliffe who passed January 2010. He is survived by his two sons, Robert James Radcliffe Jr. and William Scott Radcliffe; his daughter-in-law, Mary; and his four grandchildren, Ashley, Scott, BillieAnn, and Anna Radcliffe, all of Virginia Beach. He was a beloved, hardworking husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the community. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 21, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach. She was the daughter of the late Cecil C. and Angie Ellen Wright West and retired employee at the Navy Exchange with 20 years of service. Mrs. Golt was also employed at The Book Rack for more than 10 years and greatly enjoyed bowling and traveling to various parts of the country. Surviving are her husband, Thomas D. Golt; two daughter, Jill R. Ramos and her husband Michael of Chesapeake and Tammy S. Golt of Plant City, Fla.; two sons, James E. Hendricks and his wife Diane of Orange Park, Fla., and Kevin A. Rodger Daniel Latta SUFFOLK - Rodger Daniel Latta, 51, passed away June 17, 2010 after a courageous 33-year battle with diabetes. He was born in Roxboro, N.C., the son of Sylvia A. Latta and the late James B. Latta. Dan was a self- employed caterer and decorator as well as a member of the Village Christian Fellowship church. He also served as a national advocate for dialysis patients and was an active community volunteer. Dan is survived by his mother, Sylvia Latta; sister, Charlene and her husband Dave Weddle; sister, Becky and her husband Freeman Broadwell III of Lookout Mountain, Ga.; brother, Donald and his wife Christie of Arequipa, Peru; brother, Ben and his wife Tori; 13 nieces and nephews. Ronald Koebler VIRGINIA BEACH - Ronald "Pap" Koebler, born in Manor, Pa., on June 8, 1932, died peacefully in his sleep June 18, 2010 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Debra Lynn and Daniel Roberts in Virginia Beach. He was the son of John E. and Hazel DePriest Koebler. His loving wife of 56 years, Elizabeth A. "Betty" Koebler, as well as members of his immediate family were by his side. He served as a member of the Navy during the Korean conflict, having crossed both the Equator and the Artic Circle. Upon entrance into the civilian workforce, he began a family-owned business with his brothers as Koebler Sheet Metal Fabricators in Jeannette, Pa., then with Air-A-Plane Corp. and NARF in Norfolk and finally as the A/C and heating supervisor at both Dam Neck and NAS Oceana until his retirement in 1997. He was preceded in death by both his parents; his four brothers and their wives, John Robert and Emma Cecchetti Koebler, Thomas Koebler, William Joseph and Dawn Errett Koebler, Gerald Franklin and Alice C. Hohman Koebler; his two sisters, Bettie Jean and Thomas G. Rice and Hazel and Alexander Lee Kraucz, all originally of Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his son and wife, John William and Sandrea Mae Wright Koebler of Leesbug, Texas; grandson John David Koebler of Dallas, Texas; his daughter, Melissa A. Koebler and her companion Ricardo McDonald; great- grandchildren, Aleia Korine and Jason Callahan and Corey McDonald of Virginia Beach; grandson, Kenneth and Jean Davis; great-grandchildren, Jeanneth, Sandrea and Ashley of Fort Worth, Texas, Tim and Pam Davis; great-grandchild Adam of Arizona and Jerry Little of Virginia Beach; daughter, Debra Lynn and son-in law Daniel Roberts, Virginia Beach and their six children, Bruce E. He loved all the children with a passion and loved to play tricks on everyone including those he worked with. He was an awesome, supporting and fun-loving dad. He was a comical character, stubborn and a "pistol" and through it all - the best dad a son and daughter could ever have. He was Pap to every kid in the neighborhood and Pops to everyone he worked with. Ron was a past active member of the L.O.O.M., Aragona Lodge. Upon retirement, Ron organized a monthly meeting for those retiring from the bases which is still active today. The family may visit with Ron for the first time, Monday, June 21, after 2 p.m. with the first open visitation to be held Monday, June 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach. CONNER, Ruby Davis, born May 16, 1938, peacefully took the hand of Jesus on the morning of June 18, 2010 surrounded by her family. Ruby was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was dedicated in life to providing a loving home to her family and in doing so, worked 25 years with the City of Richmond and many years babysitting after her retirement from there. She is survived by her husband of nearly 52 years, Roy W. Conner; son, Mark Conner; and daughter, Rhonda Patterson (Jack); her treasured grandson, Dustin Conner; seven sisters, Bessie Tyree, Lucy Clark (Carl), Natalie Garnett (Douglas), Pearlene Richie (Charles), Dolly Tyler, Edna McDaniel (Wendell) and Betty Davis; a special cousin, Bertie Hall; many, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Sue Britton (Mrs. G. Ronald), 97, of Roanoke, Va., and residing in McLean for the past seven years, passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2010. She was a graduate of Longwood College. Sue was a member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church, and had regularly attended Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church since her move to McLean., She was Mother of the Year (Religious Activities) in Roanoke for 1973, and was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Community Service Award from Longwood College in 1987., Mrs. Britton was preceded in death by her husband, G. Ronald Britton; her parents, Edward Thomas Yeaman and Maude Chernault Yeaman, of Martinsville; and four brothers, Edward, Thomas, John, and Holladay Yeaman., Surviving are two daughters, Susan Overstreet and husband, Lee, of Roanoke, and Nancy Shelton and husband, Bob, of Farmville; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Overstreet Trumbull and husband, Scott, of McLean, Tiffany Wooding Overstreet, of Richmond, Meredith Shelton Ewing and husband, Jason, of Blacksburg, and Jessica Shelton Banachowski and husband, Keith, of Columbus, Ohio; and five grandchildren, Brittony and Alexandra "Aly" Trumbull, of McLean, Reed and Scarlett Ewing, of Blacksburg, and Lydia Banachowski, of Columbus, Ohio., A Memorial Service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2010, from Virginia Heights Baptist Church with the Reverend C. Nelson Harris officiating. Interment will be private., In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Sue Yeaman Britton Scholarship Fund at Longwood University. Jun 20, 2010 Susie Nelson Carter, 78, of 119 Maple St., Martinsville, died Saturday, June 19, 2010, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was born on April 30, 1932, to Lera Koger Nelson and Oscar Nelson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Carter; one sister; and two brothers. She was a graduate of Sanville High School and retired from Tultex after 42 years of service. She was a member of Calvary Christian Church in Martinsville. Surviving are two sons, Lonnie Hairfield of Suffolk and Ronnie Hairfield of Martinsville; two grandchildren; two nieces; and two step-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Norris Funeral Services Chapel with Minister Mike Carrow and the Rev. Larry Stanfield officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the home on Maple Street. |
Mrs. Tabitha Holmes Humes, 102, of Wolftown, Virginia, passed away quietly on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at her daughters home in Mitchellville, Maryland, after a brief illness., She was born on October 27, 1907, in Madison County, Virginia, to the late Thomas and Hasaline Early Gordon. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Russell B. Humes; and two sons, Gordon Bobbie Humes and Russell Thomas Humes., Mrs. Humes was a life long resident of the Wolftown community, where she was recognized as "Mother Humes". She was one of the founding members of the Holy Trinity Church of Wolftown, where she served faithfully in many capacities until she was unable to continue her work for the Lord., Mother Humes is survived by two sons, Reginald L. Humes and his wife, Jacquenline, of Hughesville, Maryland, and Vernon L. Humes of Wolftown, Virginia; two daughters, Joan H. Richmond of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Merle H. Richmond of Mitchellville, Maryland; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and a host of other relatives and friends., The body will lie in state for viewing at the church from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. prior to the service., Funeral services will be held 12 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at the Holy Trinity Church in Wolftown, Virginia., Satchell Funeral Service of Orange, Virginia, is in charge of arrangements. |

He was member of Lander Circle Kiwanis and served as president, member Moreland Hills Planning Commission, veteran captain of World War II, attended University of Maryland, enjoyed successful career as a regional director at International Harvester. Prior to moving to Moreland Hills in 1997, he resided in Virginia Beach where he founded Walt's London Bridge Sunoco, owned Dante's Restaurant, and served as sales executive for Norfolk Truck Center. Walt was a scratch golfer and also enjoyed boating, woodworking and painting. He will be missed by his beloved wife of 47 years, Monk (Rosella) Schendel; son, Jerry Schendel and wife Sharon of Fairfield, Conn.; daughter, Marti Dotson and husband Allan of Lawrenceville, Ga.; stepson, John Lamb of Moreland Hills, Ohio; stepdaughter, Randy Roach and husband Michael of Chicago, Ill.; four grandchildren; and two great-grand children. Yvonne Kazaka Ferris, of Roanoke, Va., loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away very suddenly on Thursday, June 17, 2010, with her family by her side. She was born on September 10, 1929, and raised in Boston before marrying the love of her life, Ellis, and moving to Roanoke in 1952. She never lost her Boston accent and charm that characterized her lively personality until her death., Throughout her life she provided a loving home full of good food, sound advice and beautiful flowers, which blossomed much in the way her family did under her care and guidance. Her family will remember most vividly the holiday gatherings at her home, where she was delighted to be surrounded by her children, grandchildren, relatives and friends., The spiritual community at St. Elias Church was a second family for her, where she was an active parishioner for many decades. She donated her time, treasures and talents to the Lord through her work at the church, including the annual Lebanese Festival., She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Ellis S. Ferris; and her parents, John and Sadie Kazaka.
