Alice Bottiny Morrissey

Alice Bottiny Morrissey VIRGINIA BEACH - Alice Bottiny Morrissey, 84, died peacefully in her home on the morning of June 9, 2010 surrounded by her loved ones and hospice angels. Alice embodied the spirit of "The Greatest Generation." As a devoted daughter, sister, wife, aunt, mother and nana, Alice lived her life in service to others - not as a vocation, but from the goodness of her heart. Alice leaves us with a legacy of unwavering faith and unconditional love. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward J. Morrissey; son, Edmond F. Morrissey; and two brothers, Walter H. Bottiny and Frank Bottiny. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Maureen Bittner and Catherine Davis; one son, Brian D. Morrissey; her sister, Jacqueline M. Pfeiffer; and her grandchildren, Alycen M. Davis, Jennifer S. Morrissey, Benjamin T. Morrissey, Ashley C. Davis, John P. Morrissey, and Amelia R. Davis. The family offers a deep debt of gratitude to the hospice angels: Cora, Gwen, Nori, Jorje, and Marie. These ladies provided exceptional care so that Alice could pass peacefully in the comfort of her home. Allen Walter Griffin Jr. CHESAPEAKE - Allen W. "Big Done" Griffin Jr. of the 2700 block of Cedar Road, and a lifetime resident of the Deep Creek community, slipped into eternal rest Monday, June 7, 2010. He was born in Norfolk County to the later Allen Walter Sr. and Pecolia Griffin. He is survived by three daughters, Sandra Sampson, Shirley Perry and Kathy Griffin; five siblings, Carlton, Otto, Clarence Alphonso, Ocie and Devetta. The homegoing service will be held Friday, June 11, at noon in the Divine Baptist Church, 2917 Galberry Road, Chesapeake, VA 23323. Interment will follow at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Anthony Joseph "Tony" Basile

BASILE, Anthony Joseph "Tony," a lifelong resident of Hopewell, Va., passed away June 8, 2010. He was born October 21, 1923, to the late Pasquale and Maria Sebastiano Basile, Italian immigrants. Tony was predeceased by his brother, Jeffrey Basile; sisters, Christine "Lena" Rose and Mary McCann. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mildred Bailey Basile; daughters and their spouses, Janet Beaudet, (Dick), Linda Harris, (Bill); grandchildren, Joe Beaudet (Debra), Tom Beaudet (Debbie), Mike Beaudet (Beth), Rick Beaudet (Mona), BJ Harris (Aja), Rebekah Harris-Simunek (Chris); Beaudet great- grandchildren, Kristine, Allison, Nick, Christopher, Alec, Karena, Austin, Matthew, Laura, Jessica and Katelyn; great-great- grandchild, Mackenzie; nephews, Gary Wayne Rose and John Basile; niece, Maria Grant; and numerous other family members and cherished friends. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Traditional Catholic Church. He will be remembered for building the church's altar railing at the request of the late Father Terry Marks. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Tony was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific Theatre at Guadalcanal and Bouganville. He was a member of Jacob J. Pearson, Post 637, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Known as "Tony the Barber," he began his profession at age 10 in his father's barbershop, which was one of the longest existing businesses in Hopewell, and continued his career for 71 years (1932-2003). He made home visits and hospital/ nursing home visits on his day off, giving free haircuts to sick and elderly clients. Tony helped initiate Appomattox Cemetery Beautification Committee and served as chairman for many years. As one of the initial members of the Hopewell Preservation, Inc., he fought to preserve the Beacon Theater and Mallonee School. He was a life member of Historic Hopewell and a charter member of the Hopewell Twining Association. The family will receive friends at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 214 N. 6th Ave., Hopewell, Va. 23860, on Friday, June 11, 2010, beginning with a Rosary from 7 to 7:30 p.m., followed by visitation until 9 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, June 12, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Chapel, 5217 Futura Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23231, with Father Pieroni officiating. A. L. Pope Sr. CAPRON - Arthur Lee "A.L." Pope Sr., 77, died June 9, 2010 at Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was born in Petersburg and was a resident of Capron all his life. A.L. was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Mary Frances Moore Pope and his father, David Littleton Pope. He was a loving and faithful husband and a wonderful father and grandfather. A.L. retired April 1, 1989 from Hercules Inc. as electrical and instrumentation supervisor with 30 years service. He was one of the founding members of the Capron Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his mother, Maggie Joyner Pope of Suffolk; one daughter, Debra Pope Baines (Donnie) and one son, Arthur Lee Pope Jr. (Cathy), all of Capron; five grandchildren, David Thomas Pope, Wesley Baines (Abigail), Katie Baines, Nikki Baines, and Krystal Baines; three sisters, Carol Helms, Shirley Broome, Vickie Cahoon; and one brother, David Mills. Burnett Riddick

Burnett L. Riddick NORFOLK - Born May 14, 1911 in Gatesville, N.C., Burnett was one of nine children of the late Rosa and Lee Riddick. At an early age, Burnett joined Lebanon Grove Baptist Church. Burnett's elementary school days were spent at Hinton Grove School in Gates County, North Carolina, and his high school days were spent at Waters Training. He also attended North Carolina College for Negroes (NCC) where he graduated second in the Class of 1938. After moving to Norfolk, Burnett joined New Calvary Baptist Church and has been a faithful member since 1947 including serving in its Brotherhood and Senior Citizen Ministry. Burnett retired after 34 years of service at the United States Public Health as a laboratory technician. He was known to many as Uncle Burnett or Uncle Riddick. "On June 5, 2010 our Heavenly Father called his name and said come on up a little higher, your work on earth is done, thy good and faithful servant. He closed his eyes and answered his call." He was predeceased by his parents, Lee and Rosa Riddick and seven siblings, Leola, Bertha, Emma, Lilly, Isaac, George and Elna. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife of 62 yeas, Dorothy Davis Riddick of Norfolk; his brother, Oliver W. Riddick of Baltimore; two sisters-in-law, Alice K. Davis of Norfolk and Hattie Riddick of Baltimore; devoted nephew, Benjamin Riddick; devoted cousin, Margo Davis; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was always had a kind word, big smile, and helping hand for anyone he came in contact with. Burnett Riddick will be greatly missed. He was born on Jan. 25, 1925, to the late Brack McCarroll Shumate and Flossie Mae Shumate. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Elaine Shumate; a brother, Ward Shumate; a sister; Madge Parsons; and an infant brother. He was veteran of the U.S. Army serving his country during World War II. Mr. Shumate was a member of the First Christian Church in Greencove, Va. He is survived by: his wife, Eva Danish Shumate; one son, Douglas Carson Shumate and wife Karen, Lake Charles, La.; two daughters, Vickie T. Cecil Theodore Lewis VIRGINIA BEACH - Cecil Theodore "C.T." Lewis Jr., 67, passed away June 3, 2010 at MCV in Richmond with his family beside him. C.T. was originally from the Eastern Shore. He was the son of Delma V. Lewis of Cape Charles. He was a former resident of Virginia Beach where he and wife Shirley resided for many years. He was employed by Flowers Bakery for 21 years. C.T. and Shirley later returned to the Eastern Shore, where they lived in Eastville. After his wife's death, he relocated to Machipongo, Va., where he and second wife, Carolyn, lived until his recent death. Besides his wife Carol and mother, C.T. is survived by a son, Ted Lewis and his wife Sue of Virginia Beach; granddaughter, Jennifer Howard; sister, Delores Carstens of Cheriton; stepchildren, Marshall Cox Jr. of Eastville, Laura Robbins of Exmore, Robin and Wayne Mears and their children Addison and Luke Mears and Chelsea Defrees of Birdsnest, Va. Charles Hayes

Charles W. Hayes NORFOLK - Charles Williams Hayes, 90, died Tuesday, June 8, 2010, in Norfolk. Born Aug. 14, 1919 in Edwenwold, Tenn. He was the son of the late William Hayes and Icey Octavia Hayes. He joined the Navy at the age of 17, serving for 30 years in the Pacific at Pearl Harbor, Europe and Africa. During the 1950s, he served at the United States Military Academy in Annapolis, Md. His last command was upon the USS Enterprise. Among his many medals were the Armed Forces Expeditionary medals and Bronze Stars. He retired at the rank of lieutenant training officer at COMSERVLANT, Norfolk. He then enjoyed a 20-year career in real estate at Page Realty. He was a member the Wards Corner Civic League, Wards Corner Lions Club, America Legion Post No. 327, Owens Masonic Lodge No. 164, Scottish Rite, and the Khedive Shrine Temple. He was also a member of the GRICE Commandery No. 16 Knights Templar. He was preceded by his dear wife of 45 years, Lossie Mae Hayes; sisters, Frances Hayes Simpson of Portsmouth, Nina Hayes Pietrzak of San Diego, Calif.; brothers, Dan Hayes of High Point, N.C., Monroe Hayes of Smyrna, Tenn., and Guy Hayes of Nashville, Tenn. He is survived by sister, Marie Hayes Graham of North Bend, Ore.; daughters, Patricia Hayes Page of Norfolk and Beverly Hayes Eidson of Leesville, S.C.; grandchildren, Kimberly Page White of Norfolk, Charles William Page of Norfolk, Dawn Lynn Aloisio of Middlesex, N.J., Tracey Anne Giles of Carteret, N.J., Heather Eidson of Gonzales, La., and Lonnie V. Charles "Papaw" Heater JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. Mr. Charles "Papaw" Heater, age 78, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at the Johnson City Medical Center surrounded by his loving family whom he lived with for the past 11 years. Mr. Heater was born in Phillipsburg, N.J., and son of the late William and Margaret Schoefield Heater. In addition to his parents, Mr. Heater was also preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Minorics Heater; two infant grandchildren; two sisters; and five brothers. He was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God, where he attended as long as his health permitted. Mr. Heater retired from Ingersol-Rand, where he worked in the mailroom. He also worked at Viking Hall in Bristol. Survivors include a daughter, Kim Godsey (Chad Higgins), Johnson City; grandsons, Justin Godsey and Austin Godsey; and a brother, John Heater. Charlotte Oppenheim

Charlotte Oppenheim SAN JOSE, Calif. - Charlotte (Howard) Oppenheim of San Jose and Hingham, Mass., entered into rest May 27, 2010. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Harry Oppenheim, she was the devoted mother of Dr. Arnold Oppenheim and his wife Jo-Anne of Virginia Beach, Stuart Oppenheim of Denver, Colo., and Ralph Oppenheim of Ashland, Ky., and loving sister of the late Andrew Howard, Herbert Howard and June Walter and grandmother of Noah, Rachel, Harry and Barron. Mrs. Oppenheim was born in New York City and raised in New Rochelle. She graduated from Glendale (Cal) High School and was a pre- med student at LA Community College. After Pearl Harbor, she followed her father's footsteps and enlisted in the Navy. She was assigned to the newly launched bacteriologic warfare facility at Camp Detrick where she worked on an anthrax vaccine and helped to isolate Botulinum toxin. After discharge in December 1946, she married Army Major Harry Oppenheim and moved to Rockland, Mass. She taught biology at Sharon (Mass.) High School, obtained a master's in library science (Simmons College) and was a librarian at Brockton High School. Following her husband's death in 1982, she moved back to California. Mrs. Oppenheim loved gardening, was a voluminous reader, a master baker, and volunteered for a number of charities. MARTIN, Christopher Ray "Rabbit," 28, formerly of Mechanicsville, Va., departed from this life on Friday, June 4, 2010. He had a gentle, loving spirit and was a blessing to everyone who knew him. He graduated from Lee-Davis High School in 2000 and set off to achieve his lifetime goal to travel the world. During his adventures, he met the love of his life, Cora Jean Crow, and they married June 21, 2007. Rabbit was loved by everyone and will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife, Cora; parents, Carol Luck, Mike and Suzanne Martin; mother-in-law, Jamie Crow; sisters, Lindsey Martin, Tyler Luck, Kristen Hess, Kimberly Lambert; grandmothers, Patricia Ford, Frances Martin, Linda Ford; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends all over the world. Claude Thomas Worley Jr. ABINGDON, Va. Claude Thomas Worley Jr., age 69, a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., passed away Monday, June 7, 2010, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn. He was born on June 4, 1941, in Washington County, Va., a son of the late Claude Thomas Worley Sr. and Bertha Lee Harrison Worley. He was both a U.S. Navy and Army veteran. He served on the USS Essex (CVS9) from June 30, 1962, until July 5, 1966, as an Aviation Ordanceman 3rd Class P.O. where he also worked on the flight deck and hanger deck. He served at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Nat. R.I. from Dec. 26, 1963, until Jan. 13, 1964. Mr. Worley was retired from Bristol Compressors and attended One Way Ministries in Damascus, Va. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers. Survivors include his wife, Carol Sue Worley of the home; six daughters, Kimberly Hurd and husband Timothy of Bristol Tennessee, Melissa Gregor and husband, Jimmy of Damascus, Va., Verna McDaniel and Jeff Denney of Mountain City, Tenn., Regina Shinall and husband, Bud of Bristol Virginia, Victoria Fields and husband, Bobby of Abingdon and Toni Grubb and husband, Christopher of Abingdon; grandchildren, Beth Dunn, Ellen Trent, Shawn Rock II and wife, Annabelle, Susan Lottie Rock, Eric Ray McDaniel, Devin, Tiffany and Ethan Gregor, Kayla Lawrence, Whitney Casey, Brittany Worley, Amber and Blake Carberry, Bobbie Lee and Samantha Fields, Sabrina Marlow, Christopher Vanoy and Corey Grubb; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ernest Worley and Ricky Worley, both of Bristol Tennessee; two sisters, Judy Canter and Barbara Hinkle, both of Bristol Tennessee; numerous nieces and nephews; and his church family and friends at One Way Ministries in Damascus. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Gary Ritchie and Associate Pastor Gordon Taylor will officiate. Eva Holloway Ford NORFOLK - Eva Holloway Ford, 87, a lifelong resident of Norfolk, was the daughter of the late John P. and Octavia Weston Holloway and the widow of Charles E. Ford Jr. She was predeceased by two brothers, W.G. "Skinny" and A.W. "Al" Holloway. She will be deeply missed by her beloved son, Charles E. Ford III, wife Pamela, beloved daughter, Donna F. Steiner, husband Michael and granddaughter, Samantha. She is survived by her brother, John P. Holloway Jr., wife Joan, sister-in-law, Faye Ford Cavender and a host of nephews and nieces who were all very dear to her. She is also survived by her dear friend, Roy C. Sutton Jr. Eva was an accountant with Old Dominion University for 20 years. She was involved with activities in the church, playing the piano, serving as treasurer of the United Methodist Women, and secretary to the Administrative Council. Young and Lauren J. Thompson, of Vinton; and the stepdaughter of J. Everett Young, of Vinton. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Ralph W. Craig, of Vinton; and her two sons, Scott W. Craig and wife, Sandra, of Langhorne, Pa., and Major Aaron R. Craig, USMC and wife, Lynn, of Toronto, Ontario. Eva leaves three grandchildren, Ryan W. Craig, of Langhorne, Allison N. Craig, of Langhorne, and Cooper R. Craig, of Toronto. Eva is also survived by her sister, Lorene T. Johnson and former husband, Milton, of Roanoke; and her nephew, Larry E. Moore, of Roanoke. Eva was preceded in death by her twin sister, Reba Thompson, of Roanoke; and her niece, Linda G. Miller, of Salem. Eva was born in Roanoke and went to high school at William Byrd, graduating in 1955. She attended business trade school and worked for Allstate Insurance before starting a family. Eva and her family also lived in Lynchburg for 18 years before returning to the Roanoke area in 1985. She was an active member of the Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton. Eva requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Roanoke Rescue Mission (, ) or the, ). Frank G. Addonizio Frank G. Addonizio, adored husband, father, father-in law, grandfather, great -grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at the age of 88., Frank was born on July 15, 1921, in Newark, New Jersey. He graduated from Irvington High School where he was a three sport athlete. He married his high school sweetheart, Marie Cecere, in 1942., Frank, a lifelong proud American, enlisted in the United States Army and began his service to his country in 1942. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War., After his military career, he continued his family's business as a butcher until he returned to government service in the CID and as an Industrial Security Specialist. Frank retired in 1977 from his last assignment as Chief of Industrial Security after 30 years of government services during which time he travelled the world. After retirement from government service, he became Security and Safety Manager World Wide at ITT Federal Electric Corporation, retiring in 1987., Frank lived in Irvington, New Jersey, before relocating to Middletown, New Jersey, in 1955, where he was an active citizen, community volunteer and faithful communicant at St. Anthony's Church. In 2000, Frank moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where his engaging personality, appreciation of beauty in all forms and generosity of spirit quickly made him a well known fixture in the community. He loved spending time at local sporting events and the Senior Center where he was notorious for his poker playing skills. He will always be remembered for the sparkle in his eye, his warm smile and his inspirational positive attitude., He served over the years as Scoutmaster Troop 140 Middletown, Judge Advocate, VFW Red Bank, President of the North Shore Beach Club League, was Board Member and President of Shady Oaks Condominium Association, Inc. He was also certified as a CPP (Certified Protection Professional) and certified by the Red Cross as a Swim Meet Official. He was a member of CID (Criminal Investigation Division) Association and ASIS (American Society Industrial Security). George W. Kirby Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Lt. Cmdr. George Wilcox Kirby Jr., U.S. Navy retired, 86, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2010. Born in Camden, N.J., he was the son of the late George Wilcox Kirby Sr. and Anna H. Kairer Kirby. He was husband of the late Mary Doyle Kirby. He was also preceded in death by his son, Jae Kirby. George was retired from the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam War serving as a UDT Frogman/SEAL. He was a Mustang, obtaining the rank of lieutenant commander before retiring in 1972. George enjoyed traveling (throughout all seven continents), SCUBA swimming and horseback riding. George is survived by his daughter, Joan L. Beaver and husband Charles E. Jr.; son, Jerome F. Kirby and wife Sandra D.; sister, Elva G. Morgan; grandchildren, Sherri Smith, Chip Beaver, Christian Kirby, Mike Beaver and Jaeson Kirby; and eight great-grandchildren. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church where she served as a deaconess, member of Missionary Board, Golden Age Club and W.H. Bible Study Group. After 29 years of nursing, Gladys retired in 1988 from the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, Wright Riddick; four brothers, David K. Cuffee Sr., Webster, William and Rayfield Skinner. She is survived by one sister, Edna V. Skinner of Chesapeake; a brother-in-law, Joe Riddick (Syvella) of Chesapeake; two sisters-in- law, Katie Baker of Chesapeake and Eula Brooks of Portsmouth; a special nephew, Tracy T. Skinner of Chesapeake; godson, Byron Smallwood of Chesapeake; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends and loved ones. He is survived by his son, Michael Gray and wife, Denise Clark-Gray, of Blue Ridge, Va.; brother, Frederick Gray, of Roanoke, Va.; nieces, Teresa Shiflett Moore and family, of St. Louis, Mo., Sonya Shiflett and family, of Madison, Ala., and Penny Gray and family, of Chesterfield, Va.; nephews, Billy Shiflett, of St. Louis, Mo., and Dennis Gray and wife, of Richmond, Va.; his very close friends, Lawrence, Betty and Chad Clark, Bobby, Sandy and Matthew Brown; his mail carrier, Bill Green, all of Roanoke, Va.; his fishing buddy and former co-worker, Earl Fields, of Salem, Va.; and a host of cousins. He served in the United States Navy for four years from 1956 to 1960. He began work in 1960 for Dixie Bearings, Inc. which later became Applied Industrial Technologies where he retired as a Mid Atlantic Regional Manager after 44 years of service in 2004. CAMPBELL, Col. (ret.) Julian Morris Jr., beloved husband of MaryAnne, passed away on June 6, 2010 from complications due to multiple myeloma. He retired from a career of 28 years in the United States Army in 1993. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, and with his family, also served tours in Germany, Ft. Bragg, N.C., Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, Panama, Ft. Huachuca, Ariz., and Ft. McPherson, Ga. Most recently he retired having served as an environmental technician and stormwater manager in the Fayette County Engineering Department. He was born on August 10, 1943, in Amherst, Massachusetts, to Julian and Helen Campbell (Warner). He received a Bachelor's in Political Science from Virginia Tech in 1965 and an Master's in Human Resource Management from the University of Utah in 1977. He was preceded in death by his parents. In addition to his wife, he is survived, and deeply missed, by his son; Brian, his son, Chris and daughter-in-law, Candice, all of Peachtree City, Ga.; daughter, Kelly and son-in-law, Pete, of Athens, Ga.; two brothers, Joel of Springfield, Va. and Jim of Richmond, Va.; sister, Janelle of Virginia Beach, Va.; and his four grandchildren, Carson, Cameron, Cole and Cayla. He thoroughly enjoyed being civically active in his local community and was past chairman of the Peachtree City Planning Commission and past chairman of the Board of Directors of the Southern Conservation Trust. He was an active member of both the Peachtree City and Metro Fayette Kiwanis Clubs. He pursued his hobby of singing as a member of the Southern Nights Chorale and the St. Matthew Catholic Church Adult Choir, and was active in barbershop chorales in the past. Heaven has gained a new choir member. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at 7 p.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 215 Kirkley Rd., Tyrone, Ga. Interment will be Monday, July 12, 2010 at the National Cemetery in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. MORRIS, Colonel Leonard C. "Skeets," USAF Reserve, Retired, September 24, 1914 to June 9, 2010. Skeets Morris passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, June 9. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Born in Malvern, Arkansas, son of Ben and Mamie Morris, he lived most of his life in Richmond, Virginia. Skeets had a decorated military career. He was Lead Bombardier on B24s in WWII, completing 25 missions. For the bombing of Kiel, Morris and his crew received the Presidential citation. He was honored by a full military review upon his return from combat, receiving an oak leaf cluster for the Distinguished Flying Cross awarded him for combat over Germany. For most of his 95 years, Skeets brought happiness to many people with his music and song. He once played for the Gene Autry Tent Show. For over 60 years, he and his Skeets Morris Orchestra entertained audiences around Richmond and across Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Frances; children, Terry Morris, Lynnette Morris Hoosier and husband, Merle, Charlotte Gregg Morgan and husband, John, and Victor Gregg; sisters-in-law, Helen A. Smith and Ella S. Terry; grandchildren, Melissa Loughridge Savenko, Jaison Morgan and wife, Molly, William Gregg Loughridge, Tiffany Morris, Jaison Morgan and wife, Molly, Kelly Rose Morris, and Miranda Morgan; and great-grandchildren, Sasha Savenko, Coco Morgan and Bodhi Morgan. He was preceded in death by son, James Michael Gregg. Celebration of Skeets' life will take place at Emmanuel Episcopal Church (Wilmer Road) Saturday, June 12, at 11 a.m. A reception will follow for all family and friends. BYLUND, Linton David, 90, of Bon Air, died May 26, 2010. He was born May 30, 1919 in Springfield, Mass. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gloria Wise Bylund; his daughter, Lisa Bylund King and her husband, Christian, of St. Paul, Minn.; his son, Eric Bylund of Richmond; two grandchildren, Ian and Bryn King of St. Paul, Minn.; and his sister, Ruth B. Asbell of Muncie, Ind. Mr. Bylund received a BS in chemical engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1943, where he also was elected to the engineering honorary fraternity, Tau Beta Pi. In 1975, the University awarded him the title of "Distinguished Alumnus." Mr. Bylund served as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II. Lin's life calling was metallurgical engineering, and he worked for Reynolds Metals Company for over 37 years. While there, he held multiple significant patents in aluminum products, including the patented one-piece beverage can and numerous patented alloys for use in the manufacture of aluminum foils. He retired as Director of Metallurgical Engineering Development in 1984. Mr. Bylund joined the Unitarian Church of Richmond in 1953 and was Chairman of the Property Committee at the Floyd Avenue church and then on the Architectural Committee for the building of the new church on Blanton Ave. The congregation elected him to the Executive Board of the church for several different terms. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at First Unitarian Universalist Church. Other relatives include sister-in-law, Shirley Wirsing and family of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and California; sister-in-law, Susan Calvert and husband Charles Calvert of Fairfax, Va.; stepsister, Barbara Morrison and family of Nova Scotia, Canada; Megan Frederick of Royal Palm Beach, Florida; Bruce H. Gover and family of Lehman, Pa.; and Gregory Gover and family of Forty Fort, Pa. Together with her husband, they owned and operated Edwards Hardware Company in Courtland for most of their lives. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, sisters and friends. Margaret was an avid bridge player and enjoyed vacationing at Atlantic Beach, N.C. She is survived by her sister, Sue S. Whiton; her two sons, Herbert H. Edwards Jr. and his wife Lindsey Epps Edwards of Lynchburg, Va., and Robert Bray "Bob" Edwards and his wife Lisa Faison Edwards of Courtland; five grandchildren, Carrington, Chrissie, Meggie, Paul and Madison Edwards. Marilyn Florac, Marilyn Florac died peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 9, 2010., She will be greatly missed and her memory will continue as a source of unconditional love and dedication for all of her family., Marilyn was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on September 22, 1929. She earned her RN from Iowa State Teaching College in 1951, and in the same year married the love of her life, Bill., She served as a hospital nurse in Lansing, Michigan, while her husband attended college at Michigan State University. Shortly thereafter, she and her husband moved to Mid-Hudson Valley region in New York, where she patiently applied her talents doctoring scraped knees and guiding the minds of five daughters and one son. After Marilyn's children were grown, she was the inspiring force behind the family business, MB Farms, for which she hybridized, grew, and distributed miniature roses across the nation. In 1990, she and her husband retired to Charlottesville, Virginia, to enjoy time with their many grandchildren., Above all else, Marilyn treasured her family and yet maintained wide and varied interests. She was wealth of knowledge about birds, gardening, botany, flower arrangements, literature, weather, health, and childrearing. She was a poet of light verse whose poems revealed her observations of people and life that reflected a soft sentiment or a twist of humor and sarcasm. She enjoyed the everyday and found warm pleasure in the sighting of a hummingbird or the warm companionship of her dog Sparky, who always brought a smile to her face., She delighted in her grandchildren and great- grandchildren and continuously restocked her home with children's books, toys, puzzles-anything that might tickle the fancy of "the kids." She was the ultimate grandma earning the nickname of "Grandma M&M" for the constant stock of M&Ms she kept for outstretched hands., Marilyn is survived by her loving husband for 59 years, William A. Florac; her six children, Mary Jo Babcock, Janice Cerchiara, Nancy Letteri, Bill Florac, Laura Pflugfelder, and Stephanie Luciano; 13 grandchildren, five great- grandchildren, and one more great-grandchild soon to arrive., Her mother and father, Beatrice and Russell Stewart; and her two brothers, Dean and William Stewart, preceded her in death., A funeral service will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010, at Ivy Creek United Methodist Church. Mary Dooley (Jim) Orange, 90, of Montvale, Va., and recently of Deptford, N.J., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, surrounded by her family. She was born in Bedford County on December 24, 1919, a daughter of the late William Corbett Dooley and Della Rebecca Heck Dooley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Huston Davis Orange; a sister, Lula D. "Kink" Orange; and three brothers, William "Deverry" Dooley, Roy Hubert Dooley and Pete C. Dooley . She and her husband operated the Colonial Fort Restaurant in Montvale for many years. Mary was a born-again Christian and remained devoted to her family and friends. Mary is survived by three daughters, Tessie Boinske and her husband, Eugene, Mary C. Long and her husband, George, and Sharon D. Orange, all of Deptford, N.J.; her sister, Onie D. Boothe and her husband, Danny, of Bedford; also five grandchildren; and 11 greatgrandchildren. Mary Elizabeth Griffin NORFOLK - Mary Elizabeth Plum Griffin passed away at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on Monday, June 7, 2010, at the age of 69 after a valiant fight against cancer. Elizabeth was born in Southampton County, Virginia, on Aug. 28, 1940 to the late Jerry and Elsie Plum. She moved to Kill Devil Hills, N.C. in 2000 with her husband, Albert Warrington Griffin, her lifelong companion and best friend, whom she married June 14, 1958, in Norfolk. Elizabeth was an alumnus of Norview High School and enjoyed a successful career as a mother, housewife and hairdresser. She was a talented artist whose effervescent personality both entertained and enlightened those who knew her. She was affectionately known as the "Queen of Colington," a named she earned for hosting numerous parties and celebrations and for her larger than life spirit and lively good humor. Along with her husband, Elizabeth is survived by her son, Albert Lee Griffin and his wife Paula of Virginia Beach; her daughter, Kristi Dee Grant of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; four grandchildren, Travis Griffin and his wife Hillary of Suffolk, Glenn Griffin and his wife Elizabeth, and Danielle and Julia Grant, all of Virginia Beach; four great-grandchildren, Owen, Kaia, Esme and Nash Griffin of Suffolk, and a great-grandson due in early July; a son-in-law, Thomas Grant of Virginia Beach; three siblings, Polly Pearce of Virginia Beach, James Plum of Lakewood, Calif., and Herbert Plum of Naples, Fla.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Elizabeth was predeceased by one brother, Pete Plum of Greeneville, Tenn. A special expression of appreciation is extended to Dr. Acostamadiedo and the staff of Outer Banks Hematology and Oncology, the Outer Banks Hospital and the members of its Ambulatory Medical Unit, her niece, Diane Holliday of Bristol, Va., who provided Elizabeth with loving care and support throughout her illness, and the many friends who never ceased to assist Elizabeth and her family when help was needed. A good and faithful servant of God on Max Creek, Va., Oneeta Quesenberry Coble was called to her heavenly home on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Hiwassee on June 26, 1917, she was the daughter of the late William P. and Essie Owens Coble. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Henry Roy "Buck" Coble; sisters, Frieda Graham, Edith Wilson and Dorothy Kirkner; and brothers, Emmett, Guy, Early and Herbert Quesenberry. Mrs. Coble was a retired sales clerk from Parks-Belk Department Store in Pulaski. She was a charter member of Max Creek Baptist Church for over 63 years, having served as Treasurer for 50 years. She was presently a member of Grace Fellowship Baptist Church on Max Creek. She was a true inspiration to all, especially in light of her many trials and tribulations. The love of God poured out to everyone she touched through her gentle, humble heart. Her genuine sacrificial care and concern of others was evident through her many deeds of kindness whether it be a phone call, a card, a pot of chicken and dumplings, or her famous devil's food cake. Her love, her prayers, her wise counsel, her encouragement and her service to her community will be greatly missed by her beloved family, church family and friends. Born in Bristol, Conn., she was the widow of Delphino Francis Quinto and the daughter of the late Robert J. and Grace Parrott Schissler. She retired in 1974 after 20 years in the U.S. Navy. She also was a member of Fleet Reserve Association No. 99 in Virginia Beach and a life member of American Legion Post No. 40 in Edenton. Survivors include a brother, George W. Schissler of Lantana, Fla., and three nephews, John R. Schissler of Bristol, Conn., David B. Schissler of S. Yarmouth, Mass., and George W. Schissler Jr. of Japan. Born Oct. 23, 1920 in a farm house on Johnstown Road in Great Bridge, he was the son of the late Leonard Wellons Nichols and Minerva Elizabeth Munden Nichols. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Margaret Williamson Nichols and his sisters and brothers. Mr. Nichols was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. Mr. Nichols was a charter member of Great Bridge United Methodist Church. He taught an adult Sunday school class for many years, served as chairman of the administrative board, Norfolk district treasurer for 25 years, receiving the Man of the Year Award, and he served as president of the Methodist Men both in the church and at the district level. A graduate of Great Bridge High School, he was a member of the first football team at the school. He was a graduate of The College of William and Mary. He worked at NASA Langley, Virginia. He retired from the Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District, Fort Norfolk. He was a member and treasurer of the East Camp of Gideons International. Mr. Nichols was a man of great faith and had a willingness to serve in many areas throughout his life. He was a life member of American Legion Post 280, life member of the Great Bridge Masonic Lodge No. 257 and the Khedive Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite Bodies, president of the Great Bridge Ruritan Club, and lieutenant governor for the Ruritan National. Mr. Nichols served on the Jail Ministry Board. He was a trustee and president for Virginia Methodist Children's Home. He served on the Board of Trustees of Virginia Wesleyan College and Ferrum College. Mr. Nichols loved sports and wanted to be a professional baseball player, but instead was an amazing softball pitcher playing well into his early seventies with players that included teenagers. He loved running and ran competitively into his early seventies. He won many long distance running awards including fourth place in the Shamrock Marathon. Survivors include his loving daughter, Margaret N. "Peggy" Lancaster and husband John; a son, Ralph E. Nichols Jr. and wife Sharon; five grandchildren, Christine Harris and husband Benjamin, Craig Kocen and wife Jennifer, Brandon Nichols, Kaylee Nichols, Ashley Nichols; two great-grandchildren, Craig "C.J." Kocen and Jenna Kocen; as well as his sister Marie N. Halstead. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, June 11, at Great Bridge United Methodist Church. The Rev. Danny Kesner will officiate. HORNBECK, Richard Kendall, age 71, of Townsend, Del., formerly of Unity and Murrysville, Pa., passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2010. He was the beloved husband of over 45 years to Annette Poindexter Hornbeck; loving father of James Richard (Deborah) Hornbeck, Kenneth Aaron (Pamela) Hornbeck and Mary Deborah (Benjamin) Leatherland; and grandfather of Cole, Jake, Olivia, Carson and Jack; brother of Charles Aaron (Shari) Hornbeck Jr. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He graduated from Penn State University in 1960, with an Electrical Engineering Degree and the University of Maryland in 1970, with a degree in business. He retired from Westinghouse after 30 years. In his spare time he enjoyed playing tennis and golf and was a four-time winner of the coveted Kendall Open Golf Championship. His charming wit and sense of humor will be greatly missed. Robert E. French Jr. CHESAPEAKE - Robert Edward French Jr. was born Dec. 23, 1939 and died June 7, 2010 in Sentara Williamsburg Hospital after a year long illness. Ed, as he was known to his friends, was a deputy with the Chesapeake Sheriff's Department and retired after 26 years with the rank of major. He was a life member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Virginia Sheriff's Association. Prior to his law enforcement career, Ed had served his country for four years in the Air Force. Ed lived in Williamsburg for a brief time before his passing to be near his caregivers, former wife Jeanette and her husband Ken Tarantole. Ed was preceded in death by his parents Dorothy French Dushlek and Robert French, his stepfather Michael Dushlek and his sister Michele Dushlek Lambaiso. Ed is survived by his sisters, Marlen Dushlek Inman of Suffolk and Randall Dushlek Hestor and husband Truman of Florida as well as his sons, Blane and Scott French of Kansas and Michael French of Colorado and six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Ruth Evelyn Ringstaff Steele RICHLANDS, Va. Ruth Evelyn Ringstaff Steele, age 97, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at the Mayfair House. Born Feb. 19, 1913, at Pounding Mill, Va., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Walker Sr. and Harriet Sparks Ringstaff. She was a 1931 graduate of Richlands High School. Ruth was a member of the First Christian Church in Richlands and was active in Sunday school and Philathian Guild. She worked at Clinch Valley Clinic as office nurse for Dr. Lynn Kirby for 25 years. Dr. Kirby encouraged her to sit for boards and she was able to earn a voucher enabling her to be a licensed practical nurse. Ruth was also a volunteer in the Clinch Valley Medical Center Auxiliary and was the recipient of the Frist Humanitarian Award 2002. She touched many lives working and volunteering. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Harold Steele; brothers, Willis H. Ringstaff and Lawrence Walker Ringstaff Jr.; and son-in-law, Don Wilson. She is survived by two daughters, Jimmie Ruth Speeks and husband Dwight and Barbara Lynn VanDyke Wilson; grandchildren, Danny Speeks and wife Cathy, Jeffrey Speeks, Nancy Lynn Speeks Watson and husband Jeff and Joseph R. He was born in Tazewell and was educated at Tazewell County High School, Bluefield College, Emory & Henry College and Western Kentucky University. Mr. George was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a former treasurer of Tazewell County and was associated with Farm Bureau and the Tazewell Oil Company. Mr. George was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lillie Leece George; his first wife, Ann A. George; a son, Billy George; two brothers, Leece George and Ed George. He is survived by his wife, Joyce G. George of Marion; one daughter, Martha A. and son in-law, Dr. Roderic Burton of Hermitage, Tenn.; one step-daughter, Jeri Barnett of Roanoke, Va.; one stepson, James Deel and wife, Hatsumi of Boones Mill, Va.; one sister, Alice Decker of Standardsville, Va.; two grandchildren, Nathan Burton and wife, Amanda, and Marthel Burton; three step-grandchildren, Erin Barnett, Jason Deel and Erika Deel; one great-granddaughter, Katherine Burton; one niece; and three nephews. Graveside services will be held Friday, June 11, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion, with Reverend Mike Teague officiating. The family will receive friends, Thursday evening from 6 until 7 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Deane Jr., 88, went to be with his Savior at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at Augusta Health Care., William was born on September 5, 1921, in Lynchburg, Virginia, a son of the late William Lester Deane Sr. and Anna McDaniel Deane. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Mabel Pearl Taylor Deane., He is survived by six children, Kenneth W. Deane of Lyndhurst, Randall W. Deane of Ruckersville, Carolyn Spangler and her husband, Phillip, of Stuarts Draft, Marvin Deane and his wife, Cathy, of Barboursville, Barbara L. Putnam and her husband, Terry, of Louisa, and Sharon A. Harris and her husband, Jimmy, of Scottsville; 14 grandchildren and numerous great- grandchildren., Mr. Deane is a decorated World War II veteran with numerous medals.
