On Wednesday, September 2, 2010, Our Heavenly Father sent an angel to call into the realm of Glory, our loved one Adam Troy Brown. Troy accepted Christ at an early age. Troy attended Patrick Henry High School and worked an assortment of jobs. Troy always found great enjoyment in helping others. When not serving others, he enjoyed watching television shows and sporting events. He was a friend to all. Troy was preceded in death by his loving Aunt Marie Brown. Alvirda Kate Beckner, 92, of Salem, Va., went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 2, 2010, while surrounded by her loving family. Preceding her in death was her husband, Paul Samuel Beckner Sr., sons, Paul Samuel Beckner Jr. and Roger Wayne Beckner. Survivors include her daughters, Dorothy Marie Marshall, Betty Lou Baker and husband, Doug, Donna Sue Wheeler and husband, Gary; grandchildren, Debra Bonham, Lisa Kyle, Teresa Beckner, Douglas Baker Jr., Melissa Hughes, Gary Baker and Jeff Baker. Kate was blessed with greatgrandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren. After retiring from Richfield she continued a life of caretaking and service to others. Kate loved vacations with family at Myrtle Beach. She enjoyed short trips and seeing new sights with family. Pizza, homegrown tomatoes and cheese enchiladas were some of her favorite foods and she welcomed any opportunity to partake. Kate had many special friends at Ridgecrest Apartments where she was the longest living resident at the time of her death. Kate was a member of Emmaus Road Community Church. Farrell Cline Vernon MARION, Va. Farrell Cline Vernon, age 77, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010,at his Home. He was born in Smyth County, Va., on May 17, 1933, to the late Robert Lee Vernon and Willie Jane Hopkins Vernon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennett Judson Vernon and Staley Maitland Vernon; and a sister, Ruby Vernon Richardson. He had retired from the Brunswick Corporation after 36 ½ years of service, beginning his career in the commercial department and finishing in the defense department. Mr. Vernon was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church. He was a lifetime supporter of Marion Senior High School Athletics Department and was inducted into the Smyth County Sports Hall of Fame. He encouraged young people to put their faith first, and stressed the importance of character and integrity both in the classroom and on the athletic field. Mr. Vernon was a man of strong faith who instilled those values in his family. He loved life, people, nature, and the land on which he lived. He is survived by: his loving wife and caregiver of 52 years, Delora "Debbie" Baker Vernon; two daughters, Robin Lynne Vernon, Winston-Salem, N.C., Donna Vernon Rodgers and husband W. He then became a dependable and dedicated employee of Charlottesville City Schools where he retired June 30, 1992, and then returned in a substitute capacity until his illness. His memory will be forever cherished by Frances W. Gohanna with whom he was gloriously married to for 60 years., He was called from labor to reward on Thursday evening, September 2, 2010. It is a deep and personal loss to his family, relatives and his friends of the Charlottesville community. Wayne retired from Valleydale as a truck driver and also worked at Cowan Brothers. He was a U.S., veteran serving in the, and was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Cullop Montgomery; and a brother, Bill Montgomery. She was born on January 30, 1921 to Floyd and Maggie Hamblin and was predeceased by her beloved husband, John T. Lorene Maranda Tinsley (Winnie) Meador, 94, of Roanoke, Va., died Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Born August 21, 1916, Mrs. Meador was a graduate of Jefferson High School. She became a horologist under the tutelage of her father, William H. Tinsley and was later employed by Fink's Jewelers. In 1946, Mrs. Meador and her husband, Olin Jerry (OJ), moved to Marion, Va., where she was an active member of the Royal Oak Presbyterian Church and volunteered as a Girl Scout leader. She was also a member of Wilderness Road Garden Club and the Holston Hills Women's Golf Association. In 1964, Mr. and Mrs. Meador, with their son Stephen, moved to Bluefield, W.Va., where she was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and the East River Mountain Garden Club. She also served her community as a Cub Scout leader. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Meador and her son returned to Roanoke. She was an active member of the Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, a volunteer at the Center in the Square, and worked for TravelMasters and the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services. She was preceded in death by her husband, Olin Jerry Meador; and son, Stephen Wayne Meador; two sisters, Josephine Tinsley Merkel and Billie Tinsley Ammen; and her parents, William Henry and Blanche Flora Tinsley. Surviving are daughter-in-law, June S. Meador; and granddaughter, Stephanie L. Meador; sister, Flora Tinsley Grasty, Williamsburg, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, William H. and Kay Tinsley, Dallas, Texas; friend and care giver, Cathy Cook, Salem, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Louise Moore Padgett Mrs. Louise Moore Padgett, of Fincastle, formerly of Wytheville, went to her eternal home on Sept. 2, 2010, at the age of 92. She was born in Rustburg on Oct. 19, 1917, the oldest child of the late Charlie Daniel and Lutie Kate Reynolds Moore. She married Eldridge Bowen Padgett Sr., of Bedford, on July 21, 1941. After several years in Norfolk, they made their home in Wytheville, where they were lifelong members of West End United Methodist Church. She spent her life taking care of her children, volunteering with her church, the Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, and numerous other charities and served 25 years as a 'Pink Lady' at Wythe County Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers and is survived by two sisters-in-law, Eva Dudley, of Goode, and Marie Moore, of Concord; a brother-in-law, Harry Kerr, of Gladys; and numerous nieces and nephews. She leaves her children, Carolyn McLaughlin, and husband, Barry of Vidor, Texas, EB Padgett Jr. and wife, Lynda, of Roanoke, and Sherri Padgett and husband, David Ware, of Fincastle; her grandchildren, Michael Bowen DeLuke, of Dallas, Texas, Jennifer Womer and husband, TJ, of Dallas, Texas, and Christopher Noah Bowen Padgett and Brenda Hodges of Buchanan; and a new great-grandson, Hudson Alfred Womer, of Dallas, Texas. Besides her parents, Martha was preceded in death by two grandmothers, Viola Davis and Martha Baskerville; one great-grandmother, Lena C. Barnes; and four uncles; and two aunts., Martha received her education in the Petersburg Public School System and graduated with the Class of 1971. She attended LaRose Beauty Institute, where she received her beautician's license and later studied at John Tyler Community College, where she received an associate degree in early childhood development. She was born in Floyd County on May 25, 1934, to Una Ray Keith and Ethel Boyd Keith. Rhodenia Fraction BRISTOL, Tenn. Rhodenia Fraction, 88, went to be with her Lord on Friday, Sept 3, 2010, from Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Bristol Virginia, on Jan. 16, 1922, a daughter of the late Wilfred and Rose Dudley Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, David Fraction; son, David Fraction Jr., four sisters; four brothers; and step-mother, Annabell Johnson. She was a lifelong resident of Bristol and was an employee of the Fashion Shop. She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church and loved to cook. Mrs. Fraction was a loving and a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Rhodenia is survived by her four daughters, Rose Fraction of Bristol Tennessee, Elaine Birdwell of Bristol Virginia, Thelma Foote of Bristol Tennessee and Mattie Wilson of Bristol Tennessee; son, Joe Fraction and wife, Ann, of Bristol Tennessee; sister, Magdlene Johnson of Bristol Tennessee; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. HUGHES, Richard V., 88, of Henrico, passed away September 2, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Josephine N. Hughes; son, Owen Hughes and wife, Theo; daughters, Bonnie Jones and husband, Jack, of Denver, Pam Crowder and husband, Charlie; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Richard was born in South Wales, U.K. and came to the U.S. at the age of five. He was a WWII veteran, serving as a medical corpsman with both the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps in Okinawa and China. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in communications and worked as a radio announcer and salesman while there. He retired from Reynolds Metals Co. after 30-plus years of service as a purchasing executive. His hobby, through the years, was travel both domestic and foreign. Surviving are two sons, Richard Gilley Jr. and Aaron Gilley; a sister, Ruby G. Witt of Patrick Springs; and two brothers, Curtis Gilley of Bassett and Walter Gilley of Stuart. "Bob" was born on August 26, 1941, in Petersburg, Va., and was predeceased by his parents, Robert E. Sr. and Hazel W. Ledford. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Joye Gadker Ledford; his faithful daughter and devoted son-in-law, Angie L. and Samuel R. Hutchison; and loving grandchildren, Tyler and Molly Hutchison; son, Robert E. Ledford III; special daughter-in-law, Barbara Hiestand Ledford; and loving grandchildren, Carter, Kyle and Kaitlyn Ledford; sisters, Anne L. Frick (Gary) and Katherine L. Holladay (John); brother, William W. Ledford (Alice C.); and several nieces and nephews. He leaves a legacy of vital faith in Jesus Christ and an abundant everlasting love for his wife and family. He was known for his creativity in all areas, especially regarding corporate interior design, his many and varied artistic talents, musical abilities and community service. He held a degree in Commercial Art from Virginia Commonwealth University (RPI). He had an overall career in bank design spanning 42 years. A former partner with American Furniture and Fixture Co., he later formed his own interior design firm, Robert Ledford Assoc. Inc., which he closed after 25 successful years on December 31, 2009. He was a Certified Interior Designer and a Professional Member of the American Society of Interior Designers. Bob specialized in the concept, design and construction of community banks throughout Virginia. He was a longtime member of the Virginia Association of Community Banks and the Virginia Bankers Association. He was a former board member and past president of the Richmond Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow). He served as chairman of the Better Business Bureau. He was an ordained elder and clerk of the Session at St. Giles Presbyterian Church and most recently a member of Third Presbyterian Church. He and his wife established endowed scholarships at VCU, University of Richmond and James Madison University. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 8 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road. Rudy was born July 22, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio., Rudy was career military, starting at age 17 by enlisting in the, during, . He served on the USS Chatelain credited with capturing a German submarine, whose on board code machines led to the loss of German navy power in the Atlantic and an eventual turning point in the war., After the war, Rudy attended Kent State University followed by enrollment in the U.S., Officer's Candidate School. He served his country for 23 years with extensive travel overseas and in the U.S., including stints as a paratrooper and graduating General's Staff School. Rudy was truly an officer and a gentleman bestowing the most honorable and ethical characteristics and was one of "The Greatest Generation". He retired from his last station, the Pentagon, having attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
