Andrew P. Farrington VIRGINIA BEACH - Andrew Paul Farrington, 82, passed away Sept. 18, 2010 in his home. A native of Jefferson, N.C., he was the son of the late James W. and Willie V. Farrington and the widower of MargaretMary Farrington. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief dental technician. He worked in the private sector for 19 years before retiring at age 65. He was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, the Men's Club at St. Gregory's and the Knights of Columbus Council No. 9056. He was a Naval veteran of Korea and Vietnam and a member of the F.A.B.S. Golf Club. Andy loved fishing and playing golf. He was an excellent card player. Growing up on a farm, he had a great love of the land and enjoyed planting great tasting tomatoes in his garden. He loved picking seasonal produce with his family, especially his daughter-in-law, Judy. Andy never met a stranger. He was a loving person who loved the company of his family and friends. The family wishes a special "thank you" to Arvin and Peggy Swanger, Mary Noble, Nurse Kyra, Nurse Cheryl, Sentara Hospice and Sentara Bayside Hospital. He is survived by his daughter, Andrea Ragan and husband Rob of Wall, N.J.; two sons, Jamie W. Farrington and wife Judy of Virginia Beach and George T. Farrington and his fiancée Barbara Aube of Virginia Beach; an adopted daughter, Sandra Parker and husband Al of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Rachel, Hannah, Robert, Mary and Meg; three great-grandchildren, Destiney, Taylor and Joel; and his four-legged grandkids, Phoenix and Chewey. He was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters and a grandson, Todd Vidal. A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church with Fr. Mario Fulgenzi, O.S.B. officiating. The family will receive friends at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Cemetery in Exeter, Pa. Betty Ann Pace NORFOLK - Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Pace, 77, of the 7300 block of Granby St., died Aug. 27, 2010. Betty was born in Norfolk the daughter of the late Charles W. Pace Jr. and Nellie Morgan Pace. She taught English at Kempsville High School and retired from the Virginia Beach Public School System with more than 25 years of service. Betty was an amateur writer, painter and sculptor having sold some of her work in Norfolk. She was also an avid gardener and prominent in genealogical research. Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Charles W. Pace III. Survivors include her brother, David J. Pace and his wife Mary of Woodbridge, Va., as well as her nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, in Forest Lawn Cemetery by Father Joseph H. Metzger III. Sep 22, 2010 Beulah Erna Tucker Steele, 91, of Lawsonville, N.C., died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at Stokes-Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Danbury, N.C. She was born Dec. 9, 1918, in Stokes County, N.C., to Stonewall Jackson Tucker and Nannie Belle Sands Tucker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Realus Edward Steele; two brothers, Harry and Woodrow Tucker; and three sisters, Phoebe Martin, Lois Shockley and Hazel Martin. She was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are eight children, R.E. Steele of Mayodan, N.C., Ronnie Steele of Patrick Springs, Dale Steele, Reggie Steele, Sharon Wilson, Brenda Young and Rhonda Steele, all of Lawsonville, N.C., and Kay Glad of Stuart; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Reggie Steele, Dr. Jerry Whitlow and Elder Mike Young officiating. Carol Ann Crutsinger VIRGINIA BEACH - Carol Ann Crutsinger, 78, passed away peacefully Sept. 19, 2010 in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Carol was born in Worcester, Mass., and was the daughter of the late Ralph Frank Sampson and Katherine Louise Sampson. She attended Granby High School and graduated from DePaul School of Nursing in 1952 as class president. Carol dedicated her life to her husband and five children, instilling the important values of faith, family, laughter and love. She worked alongside her husband Bob at his auto repair business and later assisted him with his successful real estate career. She enjoyed traveling, working in her yard and just sharing a cup of coffee with anyone who would happen to stop by. Her greatest pleasure came from spending time with her family. She loved to dance, sing and join in musical jams with her children and grandchildren. A very caring wife, mother, and grandmother, she was deeply loved by all who knew her. She had a way of touching everyone's heart that she met, making them feel welcomed and loved. Carol is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 57 years, Robert R. "Bob" Crutsinger; her five children, Mary Louise Gayle, Barbara Ann Wood and husband Joe, Robert F. Crutsinger and wife LaDona, Catherine Elizabeth LaBranche and husband Richard, and Patricia Marie Smith and husband Cecil; and her sister, Doris Sampson Tasch. She was predeceased by her brother, James Sampson. Also surviving are 15 wonderful grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family would like to express our deep gratitude to the dedicated nursing staff at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital ICU stepdown as well as the radiology staff who so compassionately cared for mom. Darlene Flores DeVera VIRGINIA BEACH - Darlene Flores DeVera was born in Portsmouth on Oct. 21, 1970 and departed Sept. 15, 2010 and resided in San Francisco. With every breath and every ounce of strength, she inspired us with her battle against leukemia. On Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, Darlene Flores DeVera, 39, passed away peacefully at USCF Medical Center, surrounded by her loved ones. She embarked on her journey to heaven and was welcomed into God's kingdom. While her years in life were shortened, her abundance of love and joy will endure in those who adored her. Born Oct. 21, 1970, in Portsmouth, Darlene was the daughter of the late Antonio Coquia de Vera. She is survived by her mother, Aurora Flores DeVera of Virginia Beach; her sister, Christine DeVera Quigley and husband Shawn, both of Virginia Beach; her loving partner of six years, Harold Findley of San Francisco; and a nephew she adored, Sheamus Antonio Quigley. She is further survived by her extended relatives in the United States and the Philippines. She was also predeceased by her brother, Michael Flores DeVera. A graduate of Virginia Tech, she continued her economics education with an M.A. from the University of Cincinnati. She worked as an economics instructor at the University of Cincinnati, Miami University, and De Anza College. Darlene was an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. She loved dogs, especially the beloved family bassett hound, "Freckles." She was an avid reader, a wine connoisseur, and a total chocaholic. Since her diagnosis, she showed so much courage and was an inspiration to all who knew her. She will be missed tremendously by all her friends and family. Edward Edsel Mason CHESAPEAKE - Edward Edsel Mason, 88, of Rutledge Road, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2010 in his home surrounded by family. Born in Wake County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Nerious Royal Mason and Lillie Macon Mason. He was predeceased by an infant son, a daughter-in-law, Sally Crockett Mason; siblings, Lerlon "Jack" Mason, Derwood Mason, Edna Jefferys, Jessie "Dee" Mason, Mildred Gray, Ellen Beaver and Doris Carter. Edsel was co-owner with his brother "Dee" of Five Points Garage, Norview and Mason Motor Co., Chesapeake. He was involved in stock car racing, mechanical repair, sales, towing, salvage and most anything automotive. He was a member of Clyde's Chapel Baptist Church and attended DeBaun Memorial Baptist. He was brought up as a Mason in the Berkley Lodge No. 167 A.F. & A.M., Norfolk and was later a charter member of the Norview Masonic Lodge No. 113, A.F. & A.M. He was in the Scottish Rite Bodies of the Khedive Shrine Temple. After an early retirement from business ownership, Edsel worked for Betterton and Whitlow and the City of Chesapeake Garage where he later retired. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 66 years, Margie Lee Hocutt Mason; two sons, William Edward Mason and wife Jama, Gary E. Mason; a daughter, Donna Leigh Mason Sykes and husband Howard; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one on the way; a brother, Joseph Talmage Mason as well as numerous nieces, nephews and large extended family. Elbert Wilson Creed Sr. BRISTOL,, Va. Elbert Wilson Creed Sr., 83, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, in his home following an extended illness. He was born in Elkhorn, W.Va., on April 1, 1927, to the late Early Wayne Creed and Stella Victoria Leftwich Creed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Wayne Creed; brothers, Ralph Wayne Creed and John Willard Creed; and a sister, Virginia Catherine Creed Spriggs. He was a, veteran having served in the Navy, as a Seabee in the Pacific. He was a professional photographer who loved classical music and played the cello. He loved wood crafting and made walking canes. He was very active in his community by volunteering and helping his neighbors. Elbert acheived Master Mason in 1952 at the age of 25 and was a lifetime member of both the McDowell Lodge No. 112 in Welch, W.Va., and the York Lodge No. 12 in Abingdon, Va. He was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Peggy Raye Cannaday Creed; daughters, Mary Victoria Creed and husband Bill Barth of Knoxville, Tenn., Cassie Lynn Creed and husband Andrew Semple of Houston, Susan Raye Jones and husband Keith of Austin, Texas, Peggy Ellyn Creed of Houston, and Marguerite Janine "Jeanni" Jones and husband Mark of Rincon, Ga.; sons, Elbert Wilson "Sandy" Creed Jr.and wife Lyn of Franklin, Tenn.; and John Walter Creed and wife Kim of Franklin; brother, Kermit William Creed; sisters, Mary Ann Baker, and Edna Lee Cadiz; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 12 until 1 o'clock Friday afternoon, Sept. 24, 2010, at the Heritage Chapel of Memories, Mountain View Cemetery. Frances Josephine Salyers Musick Frances Josephine Salyers Musick, 83 of Florence, SC, formerly of Pounding Mill, VA, passed away on Sept. 18, 2010 at her residence after an illness. Mrs. Musick was born in St. Paul, VA, a daughter of the late John and Minnie Harrison Salyers. She was employed for many years as a cook with the Mullins Motel and Restaurant. Mrs. Musick was the last survivor of her family and was a lifelong member of the Holiness Faith. She enjoyed quilting, cooking, and going to yard sales. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil Bow Musick; a son, Earnest Edward Musick; a son-in-law, Wesley Clendenin; three brothers; and three sisters. Powers Franklin John Preston Powers, 82, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010 at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emory Powers and Bonnie Wyatt Powers, and two sisters, Juanita Powers and Mamie Sawyers, and two brothers, Glen Powers and Gayther Powers. Jean G. Krail VIRGINIA BEACH - Jean G. Krail, 69, beloved mother of Jeanne Krail West passed away peacefully holding her daughter's hand Sept. 16, 2010 at Sentara Leigh Hospital. Born in Astoria, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Jack and Jean Guddat and the widow of retired Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Jack Burkhardt Krail. Mrs. Krail retired after 40 years as an instructor and lab manager with the Chemistry Dept. at Norfolk State University. She served as the past president for the Tidewater Alliance of Chemistry Teachers as well as a current member of the Hermitage Garden Club. She continued her love of teaching science by volunteering at Thoroughgood Elementary School. Jean was a strong supporter of the fine arts and frequently attended the Virginia Symphony, the Virginia Stage Company, the Virginia Opera and the Chrysler Museum. Jean and her daughter, Jeanne, were avid world travelers and she will be sorely missed. She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Krail West; son-in-law, Neil West of Virginia Beach; brothers, Joseph Guddat and John Guddat, Joe's wife Tina, John's wife Marge; niece, Tina Marie, her husband Jimmy; nephews, Joe, his wife Isabelle, Steven, his partner Torrey, Doug and John. GOODPASTURE, Jim, passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2010 at the age of 78 in Frankfort, Kentucky. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Virginia Goodpasture; and his brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Ellen Goodpasture. Joan Mary Hammer Canty Heftye, 85, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died on Friday, September 17, 2010., Born in Buffalo, New York, she lived in western New York until 1989 when she moved to Sanibel, Florida., She was the daughter of Dr. Edward Joseph Hammer and Anne Monica Lynch., She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Patrick Canty; her second husband, William Palmer Heftye; her brothers, Dr. Edward Joseph Hammer Jr. and John Lynch Hammer; her grandsons, Kevin Palmer Warnecke and John Patrick Warnecke; and her great- granddaughter, Flora Mary Quinlan-Laird., She is survived by her children, Susan Canty Quinlan and William Fitt of Athens, Georgia, William Patrick Timothy Canty and Nancy Wirks of Evergreen, Colorado, Paul Edward Canty and Catherine Miller of Midlothian, Virginia, Mary Karen Canty Warnecke and John Warnecke of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Kevin Michael Canty and Susan Staunton of Los Altos Hills, California. Her legacy includes 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. (All of whom look just like their Nonna!) She is also survived by her loving companion, Frank Fallert., Joan was a graduate of St. Margaret's School, Mount St. Josephs' Academy, D'Youville College (BA), and Buffalo State College (M.Ed.). She taught for many years in the Williamsville, New York, school district., She was a 20 year resident of Sanibel who offered much to her adopted community. She was an active participant in the life of St. Isabel's parish where she was a member and officer of the Women's Guild and sang in the choir for many years. She participated in the interdenominational women's group and organized events for the migrant worker community in the diocese. She was an avid traveler and visited many countries with extended stays in Ireland., Joan was vibrant, vivacious, optimistic, and strong with an abiding grace and compassion. She had an immense capacity for love and was utterly unique. Her grandchildren have precious memories of their time with Nonna at the beach, shelling, swimming, and exploring. A woman of many talents, she was an accomplished painter, singer, knitter, and cook; she shared her many gifts with her grandchildren., Although she suffered from Alzheimer's disease, her courage, humor, faith, and love for her family always shone through that terrible disease., The family would like to thank the incredible staff at the Christopher Center for the loving care she received. HERNANDEZ, Jose Orestes, entered eternal life on September 21, 2010. He was born on July 20, 1926 to Roman and Eusebia Milian Hernandez in the town of Caraballo, Cuba. Before the Communist revolution, Jose became one of Havana's most sought after tailors. After the revolution, he maintained a struggle for many years to secure the legal emigration of himself, his wife and children first to Spain and then to the United States. Jose was one of 13 children. Having secured the blessings of liberty for himself and his immediate family, he never forgot those he left behind. Throughout his life, he helped to support those family members who remained in Cuba. Jose is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Maria Oliva; his three children, Jose "Henry" Enrique Hernandez, Lourdes "Louri" Hernandez Anderson and Antonio "Tony" Hernandez; and eight grandchildren, Alina Hernandez Bice, Kelly Hernandez, Tracy Hernandez, Lesly Hernandez, David Anderson Jr., John Anderson, Eve Anderson and Justin Hernandez. Katherine J. Hodge-Saunders Katherine J. Hodge-Saunders, 92, of Dry Fork Road in Rocky Gap went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, from her home surrounded by family and friends. Funeral service was held Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m. at Tynes Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Rocky Gap with Pastor Todd French Sr., Evangelist Marviene Johnson and the Rev. Powell Saunders officiating. Entombment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens at Princeton, W.Va. She was born Nov. 15, 1917, in Martinsville to the late Sam Johnson and the late Eva Lowe Johnson. She had been a resident of the Rocky Gap area for over 30 years. She professed a hope in Christ and was a member of Tynes Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Rocky Gap. She never received formalized education but she was blessed with wisdom from the Lord. She received numerous awards and certificates, including recognition from Bluefield State College, Bland County officials, and a birthday wish from U.S. President Barack Obama. Many described her as a strong-willed survivor who had motherly advice to all with whom she came into contact. She was a good homemaker, loved to cook, and was known for her cakes and greens. She had what some people call "a green thumb" which she demonstrated with her many plants and flowers. She also had a love for animals. Her joy was to shop. She was a superb dresser who loved to wear hats. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Butner Smith Hodge; second husband, Archie Saunders; three children, Butner Smith Hodge Jr., Clairborne Hodge and Pamela D. Chapman; and eight brothers and sisters. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Sherman D. Hodge and W. Bernard Hodge, both of Martinsville, Shams Abdul-Rahman of Danville, Carlton L. Hodge, W. Margaret Cofield WINDSOR - Margaret Cofield, 92, passed away peacefully Sept. 20, 2010 in Consulate Health Care of Windsor. She was born in Orbit, Va., to the late Hudson P. and Dollie G. Cofield. She was predeceased by sisters, Ida Ruth C. Holland, Louise C. Whitley and brothers, G. Emmett Cofield, H. P. Cofield Jr. and Robert F. Cofield Sr. "Aunt Margaret," as she was known to family and friends, worked as secretary for Mr. C.T. Garner for many years. She was a lifelong member of Woodland United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher in the Beginner Class, counselor for the youth group, a member of the United Methodist Women, Ladies Bible Class and on almost every committee while she was able. Mary D. Kresovich CHESAPEAKE - Mary Digby Kresovich, 89, of Crossings Drive, widow of Ralph Kresovich, died Sept. 18, 2010 following a short illness. Mary was a native of Greer, S.C., but lived in the Norfolk area for more than 50 years. Mrs. Reba Booker Fox Mrs. Reba Booker Fox 501 VES Road, Lynchburg, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg. She was born in Lynchburg on May 26, 1922, and was 88 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Parham Hubert Booker and Maggie Pillow Booker and was married to Dr. Earl. R. Fox, who survives. After being Captain of the field hockey team and on the Honor Council at Westhampton College, graduating in 1943, Reba's interests turned to early TV, where she had her own cooking and variety show at WTVR in Richmond and WSUN in St. Petersburg. She was active in the woman's group Salty Sisters in the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, organizing regattas and then active in the wives' group in the Coast Guard after Earl's career change resulting in his retirement as an Admiral. On retirement to South Boston and St. Petersburg, Reba was a member of the DAR and the First Baptist church in South Boston. Mrs. Reba Booker Fox is survived by her husband, Dr. Earl R. Fox, of Lynchburg; one sister, Mrs. Peggy B. Maddox, of South Boston; three sons, Dr. Parham R. Fox and wife, Patty, of Lynchburg, Mr. Thomas B. Fox and wife, Patty, of Stuart, Fla., and Mr. Earl N. Richard A. Kobert Jr. Richard Albert Kobert Jr., TSgt, USAF, Ret., 81, of Lynchburg, passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Richard was born Aug. 26, 1929, in Etna (Pittsburgh), Pa., a son of the late Violet Atkinson Kobert and Richard Albert Kobert. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, having faithfully served his country for more than 20 years in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He also retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a faithful member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and an Elder for many years. Richard was a 32nd degree Mason of the Oriskany, NY Lodge, No. 799, F. & A. M., and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite for 55 years. He was also a member of the Air Force Association, the American Legion and the Sampson Air Force Base Veterans Association, among many others. Along with his parents, he was preceded by his three sisters, Loretta K. Davis, Ida Mae K. Wild and Alice K. Turner, and two brothers, John R. Kobert and Jerome E. Kobert. BOYD, The Rev. Robert Johnston Jr., 79, died at Westminster Canterbury, in Richmond, Va., on September 20, 2010. A native of Philadelphia, he grew up in Newark, Delaware. He graduated from St. Alban's School in Washington, D.C., Davidson College, Union Seminary in Richmond, and received a Master of Sacred Theology degree at The University of the South. He did post-graduate study at Salisbury and Wells Theological College in England. Ordained an Episcopal priest by Bishop Angus Dun in Washington, D.C., in 1957, he served as chaplain at Trinity Pawling School in New York, St. Christopher's School in Richmond and as chaplain and assistant headmaster at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg. He was rector at the The Church of the Epiphany in Richmond and senior assistant at St. Stephen's in Richmond. He retired in 1995 after serving as rector for 24 years at Trinity Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert J. Boyd and Louise Holcombe Boyd; and his brother, Richard H. Boyd. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Gibson Boyd; two sons, Robert J. Boyd III of Wilmington, N.C., and Scott C. Ruth Hedrick Shackelford Ruth Hedrick Shackelford, 92, of Bedford, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at the Elks National Home Special Care. She was born in Maysville, W.Va., on June 2, 1918, and was the daughter of the late Charles Gordon Hedrick and Nora Auralia Rohrbaugh Hedrick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Lee Shackelford, and her brothers and sisters. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Ruth loved her family, friends and enjoyed volunteering her time at Bedford Memorial Hospital as a "Pink Lady" and Bedford Christian Ministries. She worked for 25 years in the gift shop at the Peaks of Otter Lodge. She is survived by her children, Ronald Lee Shackelford and his wife, Sara, of Smith Mountain Lake, David Timothy Shackelford and Terry S. Anderson and husband, Chad, all of Bedford; three grandchildren, Nicole Shackelford Johnson and husband, Willie, Jessica Lee Shackelford, all of Bedford, and Christopher Damon Shackelford, of Dallas, Texas; and one great-grandson, Luke William Johnson. HOFFMAN, Ruth Beckley, of Richmond, Va., daughter of William and Alice Sue Richardson Hoffman of Charlotte Court House, Va., died Sunday, September 19, 2010 in Greensboro, N.C. after a four month battle with CNS lymphoma. Ruth grew up in Charlotte Court House, graduated from Wellesley College in 1980 with a degree in medieval history, returned to VCU and received a master's degree in accounting/computer science, received her CPA license, and began a 24-year career with the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Ruth was a true intellect who read and traveled extensively. Her travels took her throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Europe. She volunteered at Freedom House serving the homeless. She was a devoted animal lover throughout her life. Her kind and gentle spirit is embodied in the verse, "Blessed are the meek." Matthew 5:5. Ruth was preceded in death by her father, William Hoffman, and is survived by her mother, Alice Sue Richardson Hoffman of Charlotte Court House; her sister, Margaret Kay Huffman and husband, Neil; and nephews, Hunter and Andrew, and niece, Kathleen "K.K.," all of Greensboro, N.C. Sam Kaye Tuell JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. Sam Kaye Tuell, age 63, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many died Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Washington County, Va., a son of the late John Robert Tuell and Carrie Johnson Tuell. Mr. Tuell was a proud veteran of the U.S., 101st Airborne Division having served in Vietnam. He was a member of Downtown Christian Church where he served as a teacher of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. Mr. Tuell was managing director for 31 years at Holston Valley Credit Union. His leadership and dedication allowed the Credit Union to flourish, and also enriched the lives of those he had the pleasure of serving. He is survived by his wife, Betty Shell Tuell; proud parent of two children, Mitch Tuell and wife Dawn and Jon Tuell; beloved grandfather to Ashley and Ethan Tuell, all of Johnson City; one sister, Linda Streight and husband Roger of Johnson City; two brothers, Edgar Tuell and wife June and John Tuell and wife Peggy, both of Bristol Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. Dunford Sharon Faune Dunford, 54, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010 at her home in Chilhowie. She was born in Smyth County to the late Roy and Stella Marie Baldwin Greer and was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael "Humpy" Greer and Ralph Greer. She worked at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie for over 20 years and was a very active participant in the Relay for Life team at Valley Health Care. She did the M.S. walk and walked for the March of Dimes. She was an avid Virginia Tech fan and her favorite saying was "Let's get ready to rumble." Virginia Louise Marshall North, 95, died peacefully on Saturday, September 18, 2010, at the Laurels Nursing Home with family present., A Charlottesville native, born June 8, 1915, she is survived by her two loving sons, James "Jim" and Ronald, to whom she had been both mother and father since the passing of her husband, Aubrey Floyd North in July 1951. As both a devoted mother and devout Christian, God saw that she needed rest and cradled her gently in his loving arms and took her quietly to her heavenly home after allowing her time to say goodbye to her family and friends., Among those she leaves behind to cherish her life on earth and remember her wisdom and strengths are her son, James Winston North and his wife, Shirley Gentry North; her son, Ronald Aubrey North and his fiancee, Sandra Morris; her grandson, Jimmy North and his wife, Mary Meadows North; her grandson, Dain Aubrey North and his fiancee, Bianca Villamar; her grandson, Ronald Aubrey North Jr. and her grandson, William Morris. She also leaves behind three great- grandsons, Corey James North, Kyle Robert North, and Jacob Morris. She is also survived by one younger sister, Lottie Buck, formerly of Charlottesville, but now residing with her daughter in Virginia Beach; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Marshall of Scottsville, Virginia., She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lee Marshall and Cecil Phillips Marshall; brothers, Virgil, Tom, George and Willy Marshall; sisters, Viola Pritchett, Eva Brectsnider, and Blanche Cook., Known to many as Virginia and to many as Louise, she will be remembered for her absolute love and devotion to her family and her unwavering faith in God as her lord and Savior. She was baptized in 1943 at the First Baptist Church on East High Street. A long-time member of Belmont Baptist Church, a founding member of Northside Baptist Church, and later the oldest member of Laurel Hills Baptist Church, she could always be counted on to lend a kind word or say a word of prayer for others in need. She remained active in church activities for 94 years, and her church family continued to visit her both at Park View and at the Laurels and always left inspired by her unwavering faith in God and her quiet dignity and strength., An energetic and strong-willed lady, Virginia remained active and healthy for over 94 of her 95 years. She made her home with James and Shirley from 1980 until 2006 until her move to Park View. While with James and Shirley, she enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, and ball games with her family. She had an infectious laugh and was loved and admired by everyone with whom she came in contact. A nurse at the Laurels captured her spirit best when she said, "The Lord is getting a good one.", She worked hard to single-handedly support herself and her two sons, ironing, production work, sales work, and ultimately retiring from the Charlottesville Schools cafeteria. Her other activities included Eastern Star, Order of the White Shrine and a life member of the Miller School Alumni Association., Her family would like to thank Dr. Bruce Campbell and his staff for the wonderful care they provided her over the last many years. William W. Douglas CHESAPEAKE - William Wesley Douglas, M.D., 82, of the 600 block of Montebello Circle, passed away Sept. 15, 2010 in a local hospital. A native of Birmingham, Ala., he was the son of the late Dr. Gilbert and Mary Douglas. He graduated from Birmingham Southern College with a B.S. in chemistry, the University of Alabama with an M.S. in biology and his M.D. degree. He served his residency in pathology at the University of Alabama and the Philadelphia General Hospital, his residency in OB-Gyn at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and the University of Oklahoma Hospital, his residency in psychiatry at the VA Hospital, North Little Rock, Ark., and Dean's Committee Hospital at the University of Arkansas. He was a professor of behavioral medicine and Psychiatric Department at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville. He was medical director at Catawba Hospital in Catawba, Va., and the chief of Psychiatry Service at the VA Medical Center in Salem, Va. He also served in the U.S. Air Force as a flight surgeon. Dr. Douglas is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Joyce Norsworthy Douglas of Chesapeake; two daughters, Judy Spergel and husband Michael and Deborah Esposito and husband Louis, all of Chesapeake; two sons, William W. Douglas Jr. and wife Jan of Chesapeake and Stephen V. Douglas and wife Mary of Cross Plains, Wis.; a sister, Lillian Berg of Poquoson, Va.; and seven grandchildren, Rachel, Anthony, Jamie, William III, Emily, Grace and John. William J. Grishaw Sr. William J. Grishaw Sr., 90, of Rustburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of the late Helen Arthur Grishaw. Born April 1, 1920, in Campbell County, he was the son of the late William Littleton and Elizabeth Rosser Grishaw. Mr. Grishaw was a retired self-employed farmer and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Grishaw was preceded in death by one son, Bruce Grishaw; one daughter, Amy Grishaw; and two brothers, Charlie Grishaw and Melvin Grishaw. Mr. Grishaw is survived by two sons, William J. Grishaw Jr. and his wife, Crystal, of Monroe, and R. Neal Grishaw and his wife, Christine, of Rustburg; one daughter, Judy M.
